Operation: Graystone #27

April 15th, CR 569

Kendell and Ren work to re-purpose the harnesses the ogres used to pull the caravan wagons. They finally come up with something and want to try it out. Kendell notes that these wagons are bigger and heavier than the ones back home. Given that he thinks that the smaller wagons are the best ones to use. Ren wants to see if his modifications to the harnesses will hold given all the weight the horses need to pull.

The horses are attached the first of the small wagon. Kendell tries to get them to pull the wagon, but it is too heavy to move. From there crates are removed until finally the horses are able to pull the wagon at a reasonable pace. Ren works to make the adjustments to the harness' so that the other two small wagons can be pulled.

GM Notes:

The horses can pull the wagons loaded with up to 3200 lbs in cargo weight. That is their maximum. With less weight they can pull the wagon faster, but they will be slower than their normal riding speed. You have this post to decide what you are going to take along as I will be moving things along in the next one.

The particulars of Iron Rations have been discussed before, but I want to cover it definitively. Iron Rations will spoil in time, but that will take months to happen. A Purify spell will restore them, but again they will rot over time.

Iron Rations are not something most races can use as a steady diet. Typically they are mixed in with fresh fruits and vegetables when able. That's why you guys were hunting for other food the day before this one. The more days straight you eat only Iron Rations, the sicker they will make you. Just how long this takes is a function of your characters CON score. You can tolerate Iron Rations for as many days as your CON score. The lowest human CON here is Eris who has 10 Con, so she can stomach Iron Rations for 10 days. Dwarves can last longer on such food, up to 1.5 x their CON Score to reflect their hardy nature. Elves are just the opposites as what makes up Iron Rations does not agree with their systems. Elves can only last for .5 x their CON Score. Kaylessa is the only elf here and her CON is 13, so will only last 6.5 days on just Iron Rations.

Since other food was mixed in with the Iron Rations yesterday, today is the first day of only Iron Rations.

Now what?

Lucyus

Listening to the others Lucyus looks about trying to gauge which of them has the most logical plan. He watches as Erisciana begins to move to the crates and begins to move them. Seeing this Lucyus lowers his shield and axe from his shoulders and places them near the wagon.
“Easy Priestess. You do not want to wear yourself out.” He says easily as he takes the crates from her and lowers them to the ground.

“We are not going to be able to use all these rations. Perhaps it best if we set them to the Alchemist’s fire. Take the swords, daggers, arrows and bolts. If we have room the long bows so that we may deliver them to our allies or replenish the armory.” He says easily as he takes another box and places it to the ground. “Let the rest be bathed in flame.” He says simply.

Lucyus will be ready to move whatever they are taking with them, being mindful to regain his axe and shield upon ready to move out.

Kaylessa
Noise is heard as the others begin to remove the crates from the wagons. ‘This is taking to long.’ She thinks to herself as she once again let her gaze look upon the shadows of the road and woods.
She looks over to see Butternut return to her post.
Her gaze returns to the trees and road. She will also look to see if there are any signs of the woods that seem out of place. Such as birds suddenly flying or things begin to quiet.

Butternut:

As the distribution of goods among the wagons is debated and tested, Butternut works with Ren and Flare to set up some fun surprises for any goblins who come for a visit. Several of the barrels of goblin spirits are used as tempting lures to encourage investigation.

Once that work is done, the halfling woods-woman gestures in the general direction of Kaylessa to indicate that the traps are ready. Turning at her companions, she notes that the group is exposed from the other direction. "Ren, Flare, perhaps you two should watch the other end of the road. I'll join Kaylessa watching this end."

Butternut then moves to take up her position atop the last wagon again. As she gets close, she thinks about how exposed the hobgob archers were up there. Pausing for a second to consider, Butternut shakes her head as she makes a different choice. Instead, she moves off into the woods, roughly opposite of where she thinks the elf Kaylessa to be.

Settling in to a nice hidden position, she resumes watching and listening to the road and the woodlands around them.

Vardra Marcus, PFC:

Kendall and Ren spend some time modifying the ogre harnesses to fit the horses and testing out the load they can handle. After some experimentation, it is determined that the horses can pull the wagons loaded up to almost 55 crates of food. From their previous investigations, they were able to determine that all of the weaponry - including the Alchemist's Fire - only added up to the equivalent of about 35 crates of food.

"You make a good point, Erisciana, about the steepness of the trail," Vardra says. "I agree that that we probably shouldn't load the wagons up to their max. Forty crates of food on a wagon would be about three-quarters of max load, which should be safe. All of the weapons and such weigh somewhat less than that, so they could all go on one wagon. The other two could be used for food, which would give us eighty crates of food."

"While it's true that we don't need eighty crates of food, I don't think that's the only consideration. If we do manage to end the siege of the fort, it seems pretty likely that they'll want to send troops to man they lookout station. That's part of why they sent us, after all. The extra food can help feed those troops as well. As Sorvani said, the food should last quite a while, and it might be possible to extend that by putting some of the crates in the stream - if they're waterproof, that is."

"I also recommend tossing some of the leather armor in with the weapons. Sorvani pointed out some good possible uses for it. Also, cutting some of the leather into thin strips will be very useful in binding logs and such together to build fortifications around the Eagle's Nest."

Once a decision is made, Vardra will use his strength to help load the wagons as agreed. Having worked the family's merchant ships a bit while growing up, he's no stranger to this kind of work.

_________________________________________________________________________
40 crates of food (60 lbs. each) is 2400 lbs., compared to the 3200 lb. max load is 75%. All of the weaponry - including the Alchemist' Fire - adds up to about 2000 lbs. I'm not sure how much the armor weighs, but they should be able to add 8 or 10 suits and still have that wagon be lighter than one of the food wagons.

Erisciana, Priestess of Ishtar -

The priestess starts emptying the first wagon to which Ren and Kendell hitched a team of heir riding horses. Seeing this Lucyus lowers his shield and axe from his shoulders and places them near the wagon. “Easy Priestess. You do not want to wear yourself out,” he says easily as he takes the crates from her and lowers them to the ground.

"I'm more concerned with getting moving. The longer we linger, arguing arbitrarily "in committee", the more chance we risk something inadvertent happening later." She continues the process of lifting crates to the lip of the wagon's rear. But before they get many unloaded, Kendell tries to get the horses moving. Sure enough the wagon does not budge.

"Fortunately the harness rigging withstood the horses pull," she will say, a slightly sour expression settled on her face.

“Let the rest be bathed in flame,” Lucyus says simply.

"The weight of the weapons are not the issue clearly," Erisci will explain. "Nor is it the amount of space they take up. the question at hand is how slow do we want our trip back to the Nest to be, especially considering hauling the loaded wagons up the switchbacks to the cave."

The extra food can help feed those troops as well. As Sorvani said, the food should last quite a while, and it might be possible to extend that by putting some of the crates in the stream - if they're waterproof, that is."

"The harnesses seem to hold, but again we do not know once we get to the steep inclines. My concern is also how fast will this trip take. At three quarters max weight the horses may travel at half their normal speed at best. I cannot even begin to guess how slow the approach to the cave will be with that much of a load. I too am loathe to destroy perfectly good supplies, but there comes a point where expedience is more important. Unfortunately none of us seem to know whether we can safely get that weight up the incline. But at this point, I am tired of discussing it. It has been a long day with two battles and a lot of work ahead of us."

"I also recommend tossing some of the leather armor in with the weapons. Sorvani pointed out some good possible uses for it. Also, cutting some of the leather into thin strips will be very useful in binding logs and such together to build fortifications around the Eagle's Nest."

"We should definitely consider fortifying the area if there are not other enemy bands roaming about to engage. Getting Flare's companion airborne for scouting will help us decide on our next course of actions."

Erisci takes a moment to check on the scouts covering their rear from any approach from the goblin's lair. But the last war wagon top is empty. Seeing Butternut scamper into the woods, a frown graces the priestess' features. If there was an enemy approaching, one of them would have signaled. Erisci understands that they both probably feel more comfortable in the woods, a halfling ranger and an elf. But the war wagon top offered better cover than the trees, better lines of sight and a better vantage point due to height. And there was little risk of being snuck up on. She sighed and kept unloading.

Before they leave this area, Erisci will grab a few extra pouches of iron rations and fill her mount's saddlebags with them. "We should load up some food on the mules as well, in case something happens to the wagons, or we end up having to quickly move from our location."

Vernar -

The discussion begins winding down about how much to take because of the limit of animals we have available. Vernar assists with the last of the crates before wiping his brow and taking a long pull from a water skin. Knowing there is more than enough food to be left behind, the dwarf adds about a week's worth of rations into his own pack from one of the discarded crates. Nothing else in this "treasure trove" interested Vernar enough to bother.

Since the horses will likely be moving about half speed at best, Vernar plans to walk to not add to the load and to better spot traps and ambushes so that the same thing they just accomplished does not happen to them next.

April 15th, CR 569

It takes about an hour to adjust the cargo of the three wagons and get the horses hitched up in the makeshift harnesses. The three wagons are forced to circle around the wagons in front of it, including the one set on fire. Some rocks needed to be moved along the way, but the operation goes smoothly for the most part.

Once on the trail, the horses settle into a constant speed that is basically the same as the walking speed of humans and elves. The trip is slower than when you rode to find the caravan, but a good pace is made.

It takes about two hours to reach the steep incline leading up to the Eagle's Nest. The bodies of the dead hobgoblins are still where you left them, although a few scavengers are picking at their bodies. Rats and birds, mostly. The fire down in the gully has mostly gone out by now.

The trip up the hillside is nerve wracking as the trail is barely wide enough for the wagons. But in time, the top is reached and the wagons brought up near to where the campfire was made a few days ago. The horses and mules are rounded up and secured again near the stream so that they have water.

The sun is dropping below the tree tops and night is not far away. A quick trip up the ramp to the Eagle's Nest area shows that no one was been there since you left this morning. You've safely made it back to the outpost with your spoils of victory!

GM Notes:

And safely back 'home' again. Going to set up a guard rotation for the evening? Set any traps or other sort of defenses?

XP's have been posted in the usual location. Some levels were gained. For those who have discretionary points, let me know how you want to spend them.

My assumption was that for the return trip, those who slower movement rates than the horses, basically dwarves, gnomes and halflings either rode on one of the wagons or used one of the mounts not pulling the wagons.

The impression I got from what was posted, was that the food left behind was to be burned, presumably out in the open since it had to be unloaded from the wagons you took. The wagons of the Goblin Spit were trapped, at least some of them.

The horses best possible speed while pulling a loaded wagon was half speed. It could only go down from there based on how much weight was in the wagon.

Here is the breakdown of what you took:

80 crates of Iron Rations spread across 2 wagons.

The 3rd wagon carries all the rest of the gear:

9 crates of longswords with 10 per crate.

37 cases of 100 flight arrows.

4 crates of 10 containers of Alchemists Fire.

11 crates of 10 longbows.

7 crates of 20 daggers.

4 crates of 100 light crossbow bolts.

16 suits of studded leather armor were taken as well. They weigh 25 lbs individually. That brought the weight of the 3rd wagon to match the other 2.

This long day has finally come to an end.

Now what?

Erisciana, priestess of Ishtar -

The discussion regarding what they can take with them, what they need to take with them and what they should take with them goes on longer than the priestess would have liked. They were in enemy territory effectively, with a small horde of goblins within thirty minutes or so of their location. And they didn't know whether there were scouts or other units out here in the area. Some of the group wanted to maximize the recovery of food. Taking all of the weapons was at least agreed upon by all.

Erisciana preferred to travel lighter and faster. They likely would never eat thirty days of these iron rations as she doubted they would be in one place for that long and that they were also unlikely to go toward Gateway with a wagon unless they were part of the army group again. The cache of weapons alone would gain them favor with the Cynalon leaders, not to mention the sheer number of enemy they had already defeated. And there were more battles yet to be won.

But discussing the nuances of 30 crates of food versus 40 crates of food versus 80 crates of food seemed out of place on the battlefield. This was a discussion for the commissary. The priestess sighed and shook her head slowly. "I agree that the food is useful and am not pleased destroying an asset, even one we cannot make use of directly. I hope you are correct in that the horses can pull these loads up the trail to the cave and that we arrive there before dusk," she says hopefully to Vardra. "Otherwise we'll be forced to leave them in the woods at the bottom of the hill, presumably with guards." A look of malaise sweeps across her face for a moment. "Let's finish this task and get out of here before we draw more company."

The remaining food is burned so as not to be used by the enemy. The goblins are left their disgusting ale, some with traps, in order to occupy their attention in the recovery and also to cause them some small calamity. Every dead goblin is one less to deal with later.

The caravan reaches the bottom of the incline before darkness has descended. They still have the precipitous journey up to the cave, but after a slow and somewhat perilous journey, the wagons reach the top as daylight fades in the sky above. The sunset casts a warm glow over the valley below and Erisci pauses to take in the scene. A feeling of satisfaction and pride fills her and shows in the easy smile on her face. She looks around at the rest of the group. They were still rough around the edges but clearly a force with which to be reckoned.

"Everyone gather round please. Just for a moment." She will light a torch from the campfire and then cast one of her remaining spells, Firelight, upon it. "In my sect, after a particularly important battle, the members of that battle would engage in a ritual to signify their 'baptism of fire' as it were. Today was our baptism of fire." She moves to the center of the group and holds her hand out, palm down for the others to add their own. When all who are joining in have added to the gesture, she holds the heatless flame of the Firelight torch under the joined hands. She closes her eyes and bows her head briefly. The flame crackles around the assemblage and illuminates the faces of those in the circle. "It has been an honor to do battle with all of you this day and strike a powerful blow against our enemy."

"Lucyus, we should probably consider guards for the night. Our priests and mages are nearly entirely spent of magickal abilities and need rest to recover. Each of us can haul up any missile crates that we plan to keep for the base above. Discuss with the others how many reserves they want and let us know. I imagine Ren will be safeguarding the Alchemical Fire and we should be sure to include that in the list." If it's necessary to make multiple trips, Erisci is quick to join in so that the minimal unloading they are doing tonight will finish as quickly as possible and they can bed down for a well-deserved rest.

Gerett did his best to assist with the packing while not adding to the noise of the discussion around what to take, leave, or destroy. After hours of deliberation and hard work, they finally got ready to go, Gerett was happy to be back in sight of their new temporary "home". Somehow Eagle's Nest had a sense of comfort for him after the long battle, though it had itself been the site of a grueling battle very recently. Any hole will do while it's raining, he thought to himself. Hopefully they'd at least have the night before being engaged in combat again. Perhaps in the morning they would need to descend into the lair beneath to deal with the lurkers down there...but that was a question for tomorrow.

Gerett shuffled his feet awkwardly while Erisciana began the ritual. He wished to show his support for his companions-in-arms, and didn't want to be a dissenting voice or to seem aloof. Camaraderie was important, and humans seemed to hold their faiths in a much more collective way than the solitary worship he was used to (on the few occasions he engaged in worship at all). He wasn't sure if it was appropriate to put in his hand honoring a faith he didn't share--but neither did he want to seem like he was rebuffing Erisciana's attempt to bring the party together. In the end, he entered the circle, hands awkwardly at his sides. If he saw someone else put their hand in, he'd do the same. Otherwise he'd simply nod and hope not to draw too much attention to himself.

Erisciana, priestess of Ishtar -

The priestess seeks to gather the group together in a symbolic show of success after their epic battles earlier this day. The dwarf, Gerett, is one of the first to step up and join her. She acknowledged him with a smile and quickly noticed he looked uncomfortable. He fidgeted often around her.

"Not to worry, my dwarven friend," she stage whispers. "This is a secular custom not some sacrament or deific communion," she adds with a wink. Hopefully, she thinks, that puts the rest of the group's minds at ease as well.

Getting the call to reform then retreat, Kaylessa gathers her gear and moves quickly among the wagons as the wagons ahead slowly begin to move forward then begin to pick up speed. The smell of ash and fire comes to her senses as she sees the begininngs of a fire upon the crates left behind.

Not pausing, She continues on her way fighting the urge to yawn in the lateness of the day. She stops on occasion, her bow loosely in her hand, and she scans the way they came but nothing has come a calling.

As darkness falls the group reaches the overlook fort as the priestess calls them forward.
"Everyone gather round please. Just for a moment." She will light a torch from the campfire and then cast one of her remaining spells, Firelight, upon it. Kaylessa has heard of such things that companions would come together to give thanks. Kaylessa reaches forward adding her own hand to the pile of Erisciana and Gerett. “It was a well planned and fought battle,” she says as she looks at the others gathered about.

The matter of shifts for the night arises and Kaylessa will add to it. “I can take last shift as my eyesight may be of use,” she adds. Kaylessa will help unload as she is needed. Though when it comes time for her to rest, study and regain her spells she will do so.

Vernar -

Finally the day draws to a close after the final loads are set upon the wagons we can take. After walking for a short bit, it becomes apparent that the dwarf will not be able to keep pace. He climbs aboard a wagon and only then realizes how tired his feet are. Finally reaching the Eagle's Nest without encounter or mishap, it will still be a bit before the dwarf can remove his boots.

"Aye, we all be doin' well this day," Vernar agrees as he adds his hand into the ritualistic gathering. He doesn't say anything more, appreciating the gesture by Erisciana to bring everyone together despite the bumpy road the combined groups have been on together so far.
“Indeed, Priestess. Once we secure some of the crates we will do so.” Turning to the others, Lucyus will ask the others who is willing to take up shifts, figuring 4 shifts.
"I be takin' one," Vernar replies, not really caring which. As long as he gets to peel his boots off at some point in the night, he'll be content. The dwarf will help move any crates that need to be properly stowed inside and then settle in for a bland meal and the draining of a water skin before whichever shift will be his comes up.

April 15th, CR 569

The long day of fighting has come to an end and the squads have retired to Eagle's Nest with their prizes. Some of the gear is moved up into the outpost, while the rest is left on the wagons. Quivers are easily acquired from the numerous dead foes on the incline leading up to the cave entrance. These are loaded with arrows and made ready in case of another attack. The loaded quivers are light and several can be carried by the archers. Butternut and Gerett do the same with their crossbow bolts.

Erisciana holds a small gathering celebrating the squads baptism of fire from the days combat. Afterwards, the spellcasters turn in to rest while the others take turns being on guard. The night passes without incident.

April 16th, CR 569

Morning arrives quietly at the Eagle's Nest outpost. A meal of iron rations is reluctantly consumed. Those to go up to the observation area can see that Fort Graystone is still under siege far off in the distance. The view is limited by the mountains itself and the numerous trees in the way. But is there something flying over the fort? A winged beast of some kind?

Outside, the day is overcast and there has been some light rain overnight. Its warm enough to not make the day dreary, but it looks like the drizzle will last most of the day. There has been no sign of enemy activity.

GM Notes:

Its morning now. Time for spellcasters to update their spell lists. Sorvani spend the evening going over the enemy spell book and adding new spells to his. Going to add any defenses to the outpost? Send out scouts? It seems the enemy is leaving you alone... for now.

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Butternut:

From her hidden spot watching the road, Butternut can just hear the murmur of the group endlessly debating this and that. Why can't they be quieter?! Yeesh. At least the smoke rising from the burning wagon and all that noise don't draw any curiosity from the goblins in Bollo's Shield.

After some time, the wagons get loaded and she hears the call from Lucyus that they are starting out. Since they are going in the opposite direction from her position, Butternut chooses to follow the wagon train on its way back to the Eagle's Nest. She focuses on watching the road behind them as they go, particularly once they pass the fork that leads down the hill toward the main road. The wagons move slowly, and Zephyr can keep up easily.

The trip back proves to be uneventful. She's happy to see the cave entrance to the outpost, though Butternut knows that there is much to do yet. As the others unload the wagons and start to put away the newly-gained supplies, she finds a good spot amongst the trees where she can watch the road leading down and away. Day is fading into evening, and this would be a bad time to get caught unprepared. With her crossbow near at hand, she pauses for a snack from her pack.

Eventually they start to set up watches for the night. Since Butternut has already been serving on watch for a couple of hours, she remains for another hour or two before heading up the ramp to bed. As a result, she slips into her bunk a bit earlier than she normally likes, but it's been a rough day and she will need to study her spells in the morning.

Though she sleeps restlessly, Butternut is up with the sun, looking more excited than anyone has seen her. Pulling her spell-book from her pack, she begins furiously writing, only pausing to work out the details of the new spell that had inhabited her dreams. After a quick breakfast, she approaches the human wizard from Chimera Squad. "Mornin', Sorvani. You still got that half-orc's grimoire? I need to see if I can dig some more spells out of it." With the tome in hand, she returns to her bunk and spends a couple hours with the book; several new spells get scribed into her own collection.

After returning the book to Sorvani and selecting her spells for the day, Butternut spots Vernar and stops for a chat. "Hey, partner, think we'll be going down the back stair today? I'm lookin' forward to rootin' out those gobbos!"

Vardra Marcus, PFC:

It takes some time, but eventually the three wagons are loaded and ready to go. As he worked, Vardra made sure to stock up with two full quivers of arrows scavenged from the many dead hobgoblins. Several members of the squad also stock up on some of the spare rations that aren't loaded on the wagons, so Vardra does likewise.

The time comes and Lucyus calls out to mount up. Since Forelock is hitched to help pull one of the wagons, Vardra offers to drive. If not needed, he walks and chats with Gerett as they make their way back to the Eagle's Nest. It takes time with the loaded wagons, reaching their destination just as the sun starts to descend behind the trees. Marveling at the beautiful sunset, Vardra is struck by the contrast from the ugly day of fighting they had. "Beautiful sight, eh, Gerett?" he asks, gesturing toward the wash of colors above the horizon.

First order of business is to get the mounts situated and the supplies unloaded, and Vardra pitches in to help. They will need to cart the crates up the ramp to the outpost above at some point, but best to deal with things down here first. As time allows, he eats a bit of the rations from earlier.

As night comes on, the paladin asks for volunteers to take guard shifts. Vernar and Kaylessa pipe up and Vardra does likewise. "I can take a shift, Lucyus. Should we stand watch down here since most of the supplies are here, or are we taking them up the ramp before we call it a night?"

It was a tiring day, and the warmth of his bed is welcome when he's not on guard duty. Memories of the tough battle they survived and their luck that the ogres were hindered by the harnesses convince Vardra that the gods truly watched over them this day. As he drifts off to sleep, he murmurs quick prayers of thanks to Helm and a couple of his other favorite deities.

Morning comes and Vardra greets the dawn with more rations. 'These are getting tiresome,' he thinks to himself. 'I'd kill for some real food. Ah, well, such is the life of a soldier.' He wanders up to the lookout to get a sense of the situation down at the fort. Stepping out onto the balcony, he is greeted by the light drizzle of rain. It occurs to him that a bath is probably in order, and he chuckles quietly.

Looking down into the valley, the scans the area around the fort. The siege is still ongoing so at least they haven't been overrun, which is heartening. Concerning, however, is some kind of large winged beast flying about in the vicinity of the fort. It is too far away for him to tell what the creature is or whether there is anyone riding it.

Returning to the main room, Vardra finds Lucyus and Gerett. "What's the plan for today? Are we sticking around long enough that it makes sense to build defenses? Going after the goblins? I saw some kind of flying beast above the fort, but I'm not sure what we can do about that from here."

Vernar -

After his watch, sleep has no problem finding Vernar. Once he wakes, he breaks his fast with more iron rations and water. While it isn't fancy, it suffices to fill his belly so he can focus on the new day and the tasks sure to come shortly. While waiting around for the others to finish their morning rituals, Butternut finds him.
After returning the book to Sorvani and selecting her spells for the day, Butternut spots Vernar and stops for a chat. "Hey, partner, think we'll be going down the back stair today? I'm lookin' forward to rootin' out those gobbos!"
"That be my choice," Vernar replies. "Finish 'em an' be done with this mess."

After a moment, Vernar asks Butternut a question, "I been thinkin' it be good t' be knowin' how t' understand those vermin. Think you might be up t' teachin' me their language?"

If Butternut is agreeable, Vernar will strive to learn the common words and phrases first, then build upon the basics whenever the two of them have some downtime, during meals, and other moments that are appropriate.

Kaylessa
After Erisiciana did her praying to her patron and all is said and done, Kaylessa says thanks to the priestess.

Once the crates are put away, Kaylessa takes out her spell book and slowly begins to make notes within it. As to what she used and didn’t. As well as how she can improve it in the future.

She does her rounds then goes off and sleeps for the remainder of the shifts. She rises early and takes out the hard rations. She fights her way through the hard biscuit and looks at the others. “How do you eat this stuff. I'd rather have nuts and dried fruit. Perhaps even a squirrel would be better than this?”

She listens as the others debate as to what they wish to do this day. She looks to Erisciana, Lucyus and Vernar to see just what they will be doing that day.

Erisciana, priestess of Ishtar -

The priestess conducts her little ritual for the group's baptism of fire. Several of the group join in, but she is disappointed in how many have decided to forgo the brief assembly. "This group still has a long ways to go," she thinks solemnly to herself.

Kaylessa thanks her for taking the action. And the approving gleam in Vernar's eye was appreciated, despite his gruff and formidable exterior. But the leadership was beginning to take solid shape. Herself, Vernar and Lucyus, and then Gerett, worked well together, for the most part. There was an opportunity to build on this foundation which today's battles had formed.

The paladin apparently felt similarly and expressed such. “You all have fought well these past few days. I'm glad to see that we are becoming more of a unit, unusual but formidable,” he adds. “Let us get some of the gear to the outpost And then we shall rest for a time.”

"Lucyus, we should probably consider guards for the night. Our priests and mages are nearly entirely spent of magickal abilities and need rest to recover. Each of us can haul up any missile crates that we plan to keep for the base above. Discuss with the others how many reserves they want and let us know. I imagine Ren will be safeguarding the Alchemical Fire and we should be sure to include that in the list."

“Indeed, Priestess. Once we secure some of the crates we will do so.” Lucyus sets up guard shifts and they manage unloading some of the crates of arrows and food and bringing them up to the Eagles Nest. After she brings up two crates of supplies, the priestess will take the time to remove her armor and set it near her chosen bed. Erisci will then descend once more and make a quick trip to the nearby stream. The horses have been watered and fed and she pats her blue roan a few times and rubs its nose affectionately. Then she will step over to the stream and wash up and rinse out her hair. Soaking wet but much more refreshed, she thanks her goddess for the ability to ignore extreme temperatures. The cool evening air does not bother her regardless of being soaked to the skin. Morning will come soon enough so the priestess wishes those around a pleasant evening and slips off to sleep.

She rises early the next morning which is her normal pattern. It was always pleasing to be able to see the morning star, the embodiment of the Queen of Heaven. It was still dark when the priestess rose. She tiptoed quietly out to the main hall, where a torch faintly illuminated the area near the double doors. Flare was keeping watch up here and she waved silently to him and made for the door to the observation area. She quickly climbed the stone steps and reached the platform. She was met with the smell of rain, nothing very hard, just a slight drizzle. But that meant the clouds might obscur her view. She looked to the east and waited, trying to peer through the shroud to find the light. It was not to be, but the priestess still felt the goddess' presence in her mind and soul. She made a brief entreaty for favor for herself and her comrades and spread her arms wide, raising her face in the direction she knew the morning star would be. The rain felt refreshing, despite the cooler morning air. It was misty drizzle, much like the ocean spray she enjoyed so much in her home city.

Returning quietly to the sleeping area, she will collect her things, and head for the commander's room, next to the sleeping chambers, lighting a torch as she goes. She begins her morning supplications and rituals and suddenly there is another presence there in the room! The feeling is warm and peaceful and an otherworldly glow radiates outward. The spirit does not speak and looking closely it seems to be in the form of a large lion. It is wispy and ephemeral and difficult to make out as it seems to shift in and out of phase. Erisci is quite awed by the visitation. The spirit raises a paw in her direction and nods once briefly then fades. The priestess sits there trying to grasp the fact that this visitation just happened. But the spiritual touch was real. Erisciana had been blessed with another power level of priestly abilities. She bowed her head and prayed a little longer as she was granted a spell of the tertian magnitude. Erisci was both proud and humbled by the blessing.

After needing some time to recover from the supernatural encounter, she spent the time needed to memorize her magickal abilites, changing them up somewhat from the previous day's selection. Satisfied with her choices, the priestess stepped out of the room and into the main hall. Some of the group had already awoken. She had been in the private room for hours apparently.

The priestess joins those gathered, among them the elf Kaylessa. She seemed to be struggling with the rations. Kaylessa fights her way through the hard biscuit and looks at the others. “How do you eat this stuff? I'd rather have nuts and dried fruit. Perhaps even a squirrel would be better than this?”

"It is not meant to satisfy a soldier on campaign, only sustain him," Erisci says with a mirthless smile as she takes a bite of dried meat. "Getting some real food must indeed be one of our tasks for the day," she adds.

Before long discussions begin on what the plan for the day will be. There is talk of going down to deal with the goblins, encamped far below them. Erisci will look amoung the others as she addresses the group. "First and foremost, we need to find some real food. We cannot sustain ourselves indefinitely on the field rations that we have. Secondarily, we need information. We know where the goblins are. They are not going anywhere. We do not know if there are reinforcements coming to join the siege and where they may be. We do not know if the enemy has scouts out foraging as well and if so where they may be. And I heard Vardra mention something about a flying beast over the fort. If it is on the side of the enemy, it is dire news indeed."

"We need to assemble a hunting and scouting team to accomplish some of those goals. Flare's companion will be helpful in scouting the pass and perhaps getting a better idea of what that flyer is doing. And finally we need to make a plan of attack to eliminate the goblins."

"As such, we need to agree what our goals are. Presumably the total eradication of those vermin. That means killing non-combatants, including younglings. If we use the secret door for the attack, we must finish the assault in total or we give them information on reaching our back door and that cannot be allowed. This will be a tasteless task to be sure and one which we must be sure can wipe out the entire enclave." The look on the priestess' face indicates she is not pleased with the thought but that it is a necessary foulness.

Lucyus
After relaying the guards their positions during the night, Lucyus makes way to the base of the ramp. The light is beginning to fade and he sees Erisciana walk back from the stream. He looks at her briefly but then turns his gaze to the surrounding area, his thoughts his own.
Making his way back up the ramp, Lucyus makes sure that the outer doors are secured, then the inner.

Lucyus makes way to his bedroll and slowly begins removing his armor. He takes a rag and begins to clean his armor, a piece at a time. Doing the same to his shield and axe. Taking his axe in hand, he checks the sharpness of his blade, not satisfied with the edge, he takes out his whetstone and begins to sharpen the butterfly blade till he is satisfied.

Doning simple clothing, Lucyus slowly begins to pray to his patron. He gives thanks to the day of battle and the victory. More so thankful for the guidance to do what was warranted as well as the prayers for spells.
Rising early, he dons his armor and heads for the common area. Taking out some dry rations he slowly breaks his fast. Dipping the biscuits in water so that they are easier to eat. “I do not miss these,” he says simply.

Returning to the main room, Vardra finds Lucyus and Gerett. "What's the plan for today? Are we sticking around long enough that it makes sense to build defenses? Going after the goblins? I saw some kind of flying beast above the fort, but I'm not sure what we can do about that from here."
“Flying creature? What kind of flying creature? There is little we can do about that from here,” he says looking up to the warrior as he takes a bite of moistened biscuit. “I was thinking a few things. As Erisciana mentioned, send out a hunting party; two, cut some trees and set up defences in the way of rolling logs and spikes to prevent charges.

As far as the goblins, I’d like to send the scouts to observe for the moment. Once we have a better idea what’s down there we can deal with them,” he says as he looks to Gerret and then sees Erisiciana. “I do not wish to go in blind as we did when we first arrived.”

“We will need to give the scouts some of your oil to see that door that they cannot move without alerting the whole valley.”
Looking up to Erisciana, Flare, Butternut could see to the hunting and gathering as they are best suited. That would leave the remainder of the scouts to look and listen to the goblins below. The remainder could see to the trees and begin fortifying this place.” Lucyus looks to the others and briefly asks, “Are we to stay here for a time, or venture out to strike the enemy? If the answer to venture out then we do not need to waste our time and resources on fortifying this overlook.”

Butternut replies with a nod and a smile. It pleases her that she and the dwarf are often on the same page regarding what needs to be done and how.
Vernar wrote:After a moment, Vernar asks Butternut a question, "I been thinkin' it be good t' be knowin' how t' understand those vermin. Think you might be up t' teachin' me their language?"
"I'd be happy to, Vernar, if that's what you want. The language is as ugly as they are, but it is good to know one's enemies." Butternut considers for a moment. "In trade, would you be willing to teach me what you know of setting traps and snares? That could be very useful."

Hearing mention of the need for someone to go out hunting, with hers and Flare's names attached, Butternut makes her way over to the strange woodsman. "Seems we have our morning's assignment, eh?" She then begins to gather up her things, focusing on those that will be most useful for hunting and foraging. When Flare is ready, she'll head down the ramp and out into the woods. She plans a quick check of the small wood just outside the cave mouth, but doubts they'll find much there. Afterwards, she'll make for the larger wooded area down where the hobgobs had attacked from the previous day.

Erisciana, priestess of Ishtar -

Plans are starting to form regarding the day's activities. The priestess points out that they need food, real food. Lucyus suggests the rangers, Butternut and Flare, go hunting. Erisciana remembers that Gerett mentioned he was skilled in this area also. "Butternut, you should take Gerett with you as well as he is also skilled in the hunt. And if you are able to shoot something large, another set of hands will be helpful." Erisci also feels more comfortable with three in a group, as there could be enemy in the area.

"That would leave the remainder of the scouts to look and listen to the goblins below. The remainder could see to the trees and begin fortifying this place.” Lucyus looks to the others and briefly asks, “Are we to stay here for a time, or venture out to strike the enemy? If the answer to venture out then we do not need to waste our time and resources on fortifying this overlook.”

"Before answering your question, let me ask what your intention is for the scouts? Going down to the secret door will only let them watch what is happening in the one room there. What might you be expecting them to discern? Trying to open that other door that was found, may prove helpful. At some point, we need to find out what's happening at the fort. So far there is not reinforcements coming from the pass."

"If we remain here, we can intercept reinforcements, but the fort is a full day's ride away. Should we stay here and fortify we are unable to help the fort directly. We will have to travel and camp a night in the woods in order to reach them. The observation area gives a good view of the pass but poor site line to the fort." Considering this place was built by dwarves long before the fort was constructed that is not completely unreasonable.

"Today we need to prepare for the coming plans. Acquire food, stabilize our defenses and plan to eliminate the goblin threat. But we won't be able to use the secret door, at least not only. If we appear in their midst, then someone will eventually figure out that the door exists and then we have a potential breach in our defenses. We would need to hit them from the front first and the secret door afterwards its existence."

"We clearly are not staying here forever, but it is a temporary base of operations. Those not in the scouting group come with me and bring what cutting tools and rope that we have." Erisciana will direct the group to try and cut some trees damaged by the fire from the hobgoblin's alchemical attack. The idea is to create a buttress of logs between the trees where the archers first were firing from when we were attacked. It's a high defense point and gives good view of the approach, so would be helpful to have an actual defensible position here.

Meanwhile, Erisci will cast her Fortification spell at the point where the road first heads out of the curve and away from the mountain wall. She will cast it from the road further above. A rumble begins as she chants the magickal words and the ground rises up forming a buttress of loose stone and boulders with patches of briar along the outside. This will give several people a defensive position with a direct view of the road as it exits the forest.

Vardra Marcus, PFC:

Discussion turns to plans for the day, and Vardra listens as others put forth their thoughts. The priestess Erisciana wants to prioritize food and information, and recommends sending out a scouting and foraging party. Lucyus the paladin agrees with sending some out for food, but also urges that some of the scouts spy on the goblins below - and that they take some oil for the stuck door that was encountered earlier.
Lucyus wrote:“Flying creature? What kind of flying creature? There is little we can do about that from here,” he says looking up to the warrior as he takes a bite of moistened biscuit.
Vardra shrugs. "I really don't know; it was too far away for me to identify. Still, it must have been fairly large to be seen from here at all."

"Your idea for sending oil with the scouts to check out the stuck door down the back stairs seems practical," Vardra continues. "It would be good to know what is behind that door." Erisciana agrees with Lucyus' idea to check the mystery door as well.

The soldier scratches his beard for a moment. "I'm no expert, but it seems like collecting a useful amount of food could take a day or two - maybe more if we get attacked again. If we really want to collect information that way, scouting the basement could take just as much time. The others could probably build some decent defenses during that time. I don't have much skill with hunting or scouting, but I can help with that."
Erisciana wrote:"If we remain here, we can intercept reinforcements, but the fort is a full day's ride away. Should we stay here and fortify we are unable to help the fort directly. We will have to travel and camp a night in the woods in order to reach them. The observation area gives a good view of the pass but poor site line to the fort." Considering this place was built by dwarves long before the fort was constructed that is not completely unreasonable.
"I'm not sure what the dozen or so of us could really do to help the fort against an army of that size," Vardra says in reply to the foreign priestess. "While it's true that some of us are training in guerilla warfare, most of us are not."
Erisciana wrote:"Today we need to prepare for the coming plans.
Thinking back to what the scouts had reported from their previous trip down the stairs, Vardra puts forth a different perspective. "I recall the scouts saying that the room at the bottom of the stairs was the goblin chief's throne room. Taking him and his lieutenants out first would likely throw the rest of the goblin forces into disarray. Also, it seems likely they would pick a room with minimal known entry paths for their throne room. Thus, it would probably be fairly easy to hold. Clearing one neighboring room at a time while limiting flank exposure seems like a practical way to cut deeply into their strength and resources.

"Splitting our forces increases the likelihood that one group or the other would be overwhelmed. Plus, the front entry of the fort will be watched, so there is no advantage of surprise."

When work gets underway, Vardra will help with building the defenses. He can swing an axe competently enough to cut down trees and remove the branches. His strength will be helpful in digging post holes and wrestling logs into them as needed. At one point, Erisciana casts a spell that raises a section of ground into an earthen rampart. "That's a pretty amazing spell there, Erisciana. Very useful." When not busy with other things, he'll cut some of the hobgoblin armor into thin strips for lacing logs and other elements of the fortifications together.

“The scouts would be inspecting the steel door that needs to be oiled. To see if it can be opened quietly and see what is about without being seen. Furthermore they can listen in at the Goblin Kings’ lair and discern what type of condition they are in. From there we can arrange a plan to our advantage.

Post Continued:

April 16th, CR 569

A new and rainy day has dawned as the combined squads go about several tasks.
Butternut wrote:"Mornin', Sorvani. You still got that half-orc's grimoire? I need to see if I can dig some more spells out of it."
“Here you go,” Sorvani says as he produces the spell book from his pack. “I was able to learn new spells from it last night. Hopefully you'll find something useful in there.”

Talk then goes dealing with several tasks such as hunting for real food and scouting out more of the goblin lair. Some unknown flying beast was spotted over Fort Graystone many miles away. Its too far away to make out just what it is. Another subject is defensive fortifications.
Erisciana wrote:"As such, we need to agree what our goals are.
“I will not partake in such a horrible thing!” Wimzy strongly objects, not believing what she is hearing. “Slaughtering non-combatants and children? What a horrible thing to even suggest!”

“Aye,” Sann adds to the conversation. “Tae wee lass has the truth o' it. I have nae problem fighting goblins who can attack me or harm others, but those who are defenseless? Not at all. That's their way, not ours.”

“Exactly!” Wimzy adds emphatically. “That's the way of Hextor!”

“And you,” Wimzy continues, pointing an accusing finger at Lucyus, “out of all of us, you should know better. Your are a priest and holy warrior of the God of Honor and Justice. You should be opposed to even hearing such a notion!”

The squads start to split up to carry out a variety of tasks. Butternut, Gerett and Flare head off to hunt for food. Once outside, Flare lets M'Lady fly off to explore. They first check the small forest where the ramp leads up to the Eagle's Nest. No wildlife is found there and all the edible plants in the area were claimed a few days ago. The group descends down the hillside to the forest below.

Another group goes down the hidden stairs that eventually lead to the goblin lair below. Vernar leads this expedition and travels with Kaylessa, Ren and Sann. They stop at the strange opening spotted in the earlier expedition and get to work on oiling the mechanism that seems to open this unknown door.

Everyone else heads down the ramp to help fortify the entrance to the ramp that leads up to the Eagle's Nest.
Erisciana wrote:"We clearly are not staying here forever, but it is a temporary base of operations.
“There are other options open to us as well,” Sorvani will speak up. “We have wagon loads of crates holding the extra rations. Laid out, they would make a formidable barrier as well. Plus we could forage for all those tower shields the enemy used yesterday and use them to make a barrier. Their longswords could be used to anchor the shields or have them stick out as a deterrent. I say let use their own stuff against them.”

Once the hunters reach the forest below the road that winds its way up the hillside, they split up but continue to advance in the same general direction. Edible plants and fruits are found and their sacks are being filled. Gerett finds mushrooms as well. A small bed of wild potatoes are found.

Those going down the hidden stairs have oiled up the mechanism and now are trying to get it to open. Everyone needs to push and finally it starts to move! Daylight begins to filter and an opening large enough to go through is made. The concealed door leads out to the area at the base of the Eagle's Nest area. The others who are working on fortification are surprised by the scouts sudden appearance. With this mystery solved the scouts continue down the stairs once more to the goblin lair below.

Midday is reached as the work on the fortifications continue. The group is surprised when they are briefly joined by the scouts. Kendell takes time to tend to the horses when not helping out with his great strength. Sorvani gathers wood to make a fire for the evening. Hopefully to cook food with as well! Erisciana casts her Fortify spell.

The hunters continue on after having their lunch. Two rabbits have been acquire and Flare is tracking a deer who passed this way a few hours earlier. Wild onions are found along with peaches and black berries.

Elsewhere the scouts reach the bottom of the secret stairs that connect the Eagle's Nest to the goblin lair. Unlike the last time, no noise is heard in the immediate area. The view port is opened and there is no fire burning inside the throne room of the Goblin King. The area seems vacant at the moment.

The scouts try to see just how this secret door opens. Much like the door that lead outside, this one has slide bolts holding it shut. It too has rusted shut with the passage of years. Oil is applied to the bolts and they are finally able to move, but the secret door itself does not budge. Ren spends several minutes taking it all in.

“The door has rusted and is swollen from sitting unused all these years,” the gnome theorizes. “If we are going to go into the lair this way, we'll need to break it down. It'll be loud and will be messy.”

Those with sharp hearing will hear distant voices far off in the goblin lair. However the speakers are not goblins!

The hunters and the scouts return before night falls. The hunters meet with great success, acquiring many fruits and vegetables. Even better they have fresh deer and rabbit meat! The scouts report their findings as well.

M'Lady settles in on Flare's shoulder and demands some of the fresh rabbit. Then she squawks to the Ranger of Selune about what she saw.

“M'Lady has spotted another caravan coming down the main road from Gateway,” Flare will report. “It looks similar to the other caravan with ogres doing the pulling.”

GM Notes:

Covered a lot of ground, but there was a lot of ground to cover.

I normally am very relaxed when it comes to alignments, but sometimes I need to act on them. Good aligned folk should be repulsed by the idea of killing enemy non-combatants, especially paladins. Eris herself is Neutral, so its not an issue with her. As noted in her post, she was not happy with it, but considered it a viable outcome. While it is just a hypothetical thought right now, it's something those who are Good should not be pleased with.

Here are some new maps to go along with the post. The first shows the location of the secret door that leads out to the outside are around the cave leading up to the Eagle's Nest. Basically it was a back door out to come up behind an enemy going up the ramp. The door is the yellow S on the map.

The second is where M'Lady spotted the caravan. It's on the main road heading in the direction of the enemy army. The caravan is the yellow C on the map and is moving from right to left. Ogres move very slow pulling wagons. They can cover maybe 10 miles a day. The hexes on this map are 1 mile in size. I included Up and Down on this map. Up goes to the Eagle's Nest area where you are at now while down leads to the goblin lair.

Real food has been acquired for the evening, can anyone cook it up? I figured the deer and rabbits were carved up out in the forest and their meat taken with you.

Continue to outline what defenses you are adding to the outside portion of the Eagle's Nest area.

While none of the scouts understood what the voices were saying in the goblin lair, they did recognize the language itself. The speakers were hobgoblins.

I've been working on a large scale change on how the database lists priest spells on your character sheets. I have all mage and priest spells for one level in the same table. The character sheets pick out which spells are yours by looking for your names in the table. While the procedure works fine for mages it could be streamlined for priests since they get all the spells based on what spheres they have. So I added a new column to the table listing which spheres priest spells are in. By doing it this way, I no longer have to attach your name to a spell. Instead the sheets will generate priest spells based on your spheres.

The problem that I was running into is that the program I was using to see what priest spells you have access to kept wanting to give everyone Plant sphere spells even if you didn't have the sphere! Plus there were spells I would just miss when adding names. This new format fixes all those problems. Even better, it will make adding new spells when a new spell level gained a breeze for me.

All the priests in this game now have all their priest spells listed in this new format. So you might notice a few spells missing as you weren't supposed to have them to begin with and other new ones that you should have had all along. This change has not yet been fully done in The Sylvan Realm game as not all the spell levels have spheres added to them yet.

Night is beginning to fall after a full day of work.

Now what?

Vernar -
"I'd be happy to, Vernar, if that's what you want. The language is as ugly as they are, but it is good to know one's enemies." Butternut considers for a moment. "In trade, would you be willing to teach me what you know of setting traps and snares? That could be very useful."
"Yeah," Vernar replies in agreement with knowing the enemy. "Not that I be expectin' them t' be havin' much o' tactics and such, but it be good t' know what they be yammerin' 'bout and t' maybe scare 'em some."

"I can certainly teach you all I be knowin' 'bout settin' snares and such," Vernar replies to Butternut's request. "It be a good skill t' be havin' when we be out o' doors like this."

Vernar hears Wimzy and Sann declare their distaste for slaughtering non-combatants and children. He agrees, shaking his head at Erisciana's decision. She needs to work harder on the leadership she so craves, Vernar muses, lest we become what we are so valiantly fighting against. If she expects everyone to be on board with this task, she may find herself alone.

The others who are working on fortification are surprised by the scouts sudden appearance. With this mystery solved the scouts continue down the stairs once more to the goblin lair below.
Vernar blinks as he steps out into the daylight. He spots several of the others tasked to work on the fortifications and raises a hand so they do not accidently think they are a foe. After a brief rest from the work on getting the door working, they return inside and descend further.

Those with sharp hearing will hear distant voices far off in the goblin lair. However the speakers are not goblins!
Ushering everyone back away from the door once it is apparent there is no easy way through, Vernar whispers, "That be takin' this option off the table then. At least we be knowin' no one be comin' through this way t' us either."

Vernar will lead the rest of the scouts back up and regroup with the others. Once everyone is together, he will state, "The way is barred down there; the door too rusty and wedged tight. Unless we be wantin' t' break the whole thing down, it be remainin' blocked. There be somethin' else lurkin' down there. I think it be hobgoblins, but no way t' verify how many or what the situation be at the moment."

Vardra wrote:"Beautiful sight, eh, Gerett?"
"Aye. I've come to appreciate the sky more than many o' me kin. Of course, tha sky looks nice because it highlights tha mountains," he added with a grin. "I've no taste fer it when it's over the plains. Sky's good in small doses."

When they reached the fort, Gerett took a watch, but a short one. He had suffered some injury during the battle and knew he would need his rest if he were to be at his best the next day. In the morning, the crew gathered over iron rations, and he could tell no one was satisfied with them.

"We'll definitely need some real food afore we all get tha bends," Gerett noted. He knew this was not news to anyone--several complaints had already been made about the poor fare. He simply wanted to express his agreement--getting real food was a health concern, not just a morale issue.
Vardra wrote:"What's the plan for today? Are we sticking around long enough that it makes sense to build defenses? Going after the goblins? I saw some kind of flying beast above the fort, but I'm not sure what we can do about that from here."
"In my opinion, we should plan on staying here fer awhile. Holding this watch is the best way we can help tha Fort. That means stocking up on food and eliminating tha vermin underneath us."
Erisciana wrote:"As such, we need to agree what our goals are. Presumably the total eradication of those vermin. That means killing non-combatants, including younglings. If we use the secret door for the attack, we must finish the assault in total or we give them information on reaching our back door and that cannot be allowed. This will be a tasteless task to be sure and one which we must be sure can wipe out the entire enclave."
Gerett scowled. "I don't like goblins. Never have. But I'm a soldier, so tha only greenskins I've met have been their raiders and fighters. They don't grow on trees, so they must have civilians like everyone else. And I don't like the idea of slaughterin' 'em, no matter how ugly they be. That said, this isn't their home. They came here ta' fight and conquer and occupy. If they brought their young'uns with them fer that, that's on them. Not saying we need ta' kill everything, mind. But I'm not seeing the alternative if there really are civilians down there."
Erisciana wrote:"Butternut, you should take Gerett with you as well as he is also skilled in the hunt. And if you are able to shoot something large, another set of hands will be helpful."
"Aye, I'll come with tha hunters. If I get the chance I'll set some snares too, might save us time getting food tomorrow if we've already got a trap line full."
Vardra wrote:"I'm not sure what the dozen or so of us could really do to help the fort against an army of that size," Vardra says in reply to the foreign priestess. "While it's true that some of us are training in guerilla warfare, most of us are not."
There was still some disagreement on the long term plans for the group. That was to be expected--the situation was changing day by day. As long as they agreed on the best short term actions, perhaps that would be enough. Still, Gerett elected to contribute his opinion.

"I agree wit' Vardra. In the battle at the Fort, we're just another handful of soldiers, drops in a bucket. But if they are holding out, the best thing we can do is make sure tha siege doesn't get resupplied. The way I see it, holding this watch is tha best way ta do it. We can keep an eye out for any more caravans and ambush 'em. And most importantly, the enemy doesn't have this place ta' fall back to or ta' squat reinforcements. We can do some good holding Eagle's Nest, and the gobbos could do a lot more harm if they get it back."

Gerett left with the hunting group, content that the others would come to a reasonable course of action once the party was resupplied. Gerett was pleased to find some wild onions and fruit, and congratulated Flare on bagging a deer.

| Gerett is Neutral Good but practical, a reasoned individual who doesn't find pleasure in bloodshed, but a cynic. Hopefully his comment is still in line with his alignment. He'll follow the lead of the group either way. |

Erisciana said '" As such, we need to agree what our goals are.

Lucyus remains quiet through the speaking of that their goals are. Wimzy and Sann do not wish to kill the young and defenceless. And rightfully so. The questions become, do we let them go to grow older and fight another day. Or show them mercy in some way.
“Careful My lady, You do not know what goes on in my heart or mind unless I speak it." His eyes an icy blue, "Lady Wimzy"". Erisciana spoke hypothetically as to what we would do. She was not fully speaking for everyone here. That is why I kept quiet to see and gauge where the group was.” Speaking evenly and honestly. “I know The Heironean Code I have sworn. Duty to thy people. As you said my patron is one of Honor and Justice, He is also for Mercy and the Protector of the weak.”
"The remaining armed goblins and hobgoblins need to dealt with decisively. Any of the goblins that are unfit or children in the end will be given a choice.” Knowing Butternut he looks specifically at or for her. “They will be given mercy and some iron rations for their travels and to carry what they can from their homes. With the knowledge that they have to find a new home and return at their own peril.''
"In all likelihood, these civilians young and old will probably hide from us, or move deeper into Bolo's area. It is possible they may run into our Stone friend."he says looking at Gerrett. "All we can do is plan, if the plan runs it's course, all the better." he says simply.
“It is a sound idea. With the addition of the spears and short swords in the armoury we could use it to force the enemy into an area of our choosing.”
"In my opinion, we should plan on staying here fer awhile. Holding this watch is the best way we can help tha Fort. That means stocking up on food and eliminating tha vermin underneath us."
“I agree, my dwarven friend.”
Later on the scouts return, bringing news that may change their plans.

Turning to Vernar, “Do you think we could smoke them out? We have a good amount of Alchmist’s fire. We could smoke them out from behind and await at the mouth of the Den for them to come out and purge them with Alchemist’s fire from the front as well.”

Erisciana, priestess of Ishtar -

The soldier scratches his beard for a moment. "I'm no expert, but it seems like collecting a useful amount of food could take a day or two - maybe more if we get attacked again. If we really want to collect information that way, scouting the basement could take just as much time. The others could probably build some decent defenses during that time. I don't have much skill with hunting or scouting, but I can help with that."

"Agreed. We should be able to accomplish multiple tasks simultaneously," the priestess concurs with a nod.
----------------------------------------

“The scouts would be inspecting the steel door that needs to be oiled. To see if it can be opened quietly and see what is about without being seen. Furthermore they can listen in at the Goblin Kings’ lair and discern what type of condition they are in. From there we can arrange a plan to our advantage."

"That could prove effective. And seems to be a relatively risk free tactic."

"I'm not sure what the dozen or so of us could really do to help the fort against an army of that size," Vardra says in reply to the foreign priestess. "While it's true that some of us are trained in guerrilla warfare, most of us are not."

Erisci smiles widely. "Virtually none of us thought we could take on and defeat 16 ogres and a score of hobgoblins either," she responds. "And yet we did. Because of a solid plan that was supremely well executed by everyone. There is plenty that can be done, as long as we do not think like individuals. And not everyone needs to have experience, but rather follow a concise and coordinated plan of action. We have proven that skilled individuals following a formidable plan can defeat considerable odds."

"And we are definitely in a good position to attack any reinforcements or caravans of supplies. But if we have a chance to harass the main attack and strike them in a decisive manner, we can do that as well."
-----------------------------------------

"Not necessarily. The caverns are narrow and limited. If we advance properly, we limit avenues of attack and eliminate the numerical advantage that they might possess. Also the second group has a chance to be more effective with surprise if their forces are directed against a main attack thrust. We create our own surprise. There are many ways to approach a battle and acquire the advantage."
------------------------------------------

When the priestess puts forth the possibility of killing all the goblins in the caverns below, Gerett responded with similar distaste in what seemed to be a potentially necessary action. However, others of the group erupt in discord. Erisci smiles sheepishly for a moment. "I'm glad that I managed to garb the attention of many of you." She pauses for a moment to let some of the emotions begin to fade. "Deciding on a course of action in defeating the enemy is much more simple and direct than this current discussion. I can tell you that in my studies in the temple, there is no clear best answer when you take future ramifications into consideration. This group has been talking about eliminating the goblins in the caverns below for some time now. Several have expressed their desires to root them out. I even overheard Vernar this very morning saying he was ready to 'finish them'."

"Clearly there are family units there. We saw them in the arena. We saw the Stone Dwarf kill many of them. And I will add that no one seemed to have any concern that defenseless creatures were cut down at that time, but I digress. If our goal is to remove the goblin presence, then failing them retreating, we need to defeat their fighters en masse. Then what do you do with the 'defenseless' remaining? Lucyus suggested giving them food and sending them in the wilderness. That sounds merciful. But will all of them reach this 'new home'? Driving them out into a hostile environment may be even more cruel in the end to those who do not survive the journey."

"And do they deserve our mercy? Certainly we strive to be better than them. They are evil vermin. They have been known to eat humans, dwarves, halflings. These 'defenseless' creatures were all gathered cheering when they murdered Saan's companions." She looks to the dwarf. "You show great restraint in not wanting revenge when you nearly ended up an evening meal for those vile scum."

"And Lucyus, you speak of not wanting to kill them, but imply that it would be satisfactory should they meet the Stone Golem once more. How is such moral justification any better, any less dishonorable, than the direct alternative? I am not saying that this is not a moral quandary. But I also do not believe it is as black and white as some of you are making it out to be. Our actions and inactions will have results and implications whether we witness the results of those actions and inactions directly or not."
----------------------------------------------------

One part of the group begins to prepare defenses. "I don't like the defensibility of the approach to Eagle's Nest. The winding path makes it difficult to counter an assault with no defensive positions along the way. We should have spent the day planning the ambush preparing such and the battle here yesterday would have been easier.

"Yes, the shields and the swords of the fallen enemy could be used to erect a further barricade or used to strength the log buttresses we erect. However, I think we might think twice about leaving our food out in the elements for vermin to rummage through and for the elements to have their way. They are edible at best and may prove even worse rain soaked or infested with ants."

"Thank you, Vardra," she responds with a nod. "The Queen of the Heavens has rewarded her follower with access to the tertiary magnitude of blessings. I am honored to have received these new blessings."

The day continues on the scouts and the hunters both bring back news eventually. The scouts have potentially bad news. The secret door to the goblins is not in a condition to use. "That may be for the best as now we are certain that this path cannot be used to gain access to our location." Also there were hobgoblins there. That was definitely a negative. The hunters however have been successful and there will be a satisfying meal tonight with meat and vegetables. "Well done! We will endeavor to make a hearty repast for all."

While the meal is being prepared, Flare's avian companion returns from scouting they area.

The priestess looks to Vernar and Lucyus. "Quite obviously, the attack on the goblins will have to wait. We need to eliminate the ogres and halt the transport of whatever is in those wagons. Everyone eat well and get rest because we will be on the move in the morning again."

"Me too," Butternut grumbles as she accepts the heavy tome. Returning a couple hours later, she hands it back to the human mage - her mood clearly brighter than before. "Got a few good things outta here. Thanks, Sorvani!" Indeed, she has a handful of new spells now, which pleases her greatly.

Butternut agrees to Vernar's request to teach him and to share his knowledge of traps and snares with her. "Sounds like a good trade, my friend. However, make no mistake: gobbos can be viciously clever. Listening in on their schemes can be a life-saver."
Erisciana wrote: Lucyus suggests the rangers, Butternut and Flare, go hunting. Erisciana remembers that Gerett mentioned he was skilled in this area also. Erisci also feels more comfortable with three in a group, as there could be enemy in the area.
Butternut glances at the priestess. "Gladly. The company is welcome, and I wouldn't mind seeing what he can do." Butternut makes her way over to the newest dwarf in the company. "Wanna join us for some hunting and foraging, Gerett?"

"Excellent. Welp, might as well be gettin' to it." Butternut turns and heads down the ramp toward the outdoors.
Lucyus wrote:“The scouts would be inspecting the steel door that needs to be oiled. To see if it can be opened quietly and see what is about without being seen. Furthermore they can listen in at the Goblin Kings’ lair and discern what type of condition they are in. From there we can arrange a plan to our advantage.
Passing by, Butternut overhears a bit of the conversation. "Listening may also reveal a bit of their plans, if any understand their language. Could also get a feel for their comings and goings; knowing their habits and patterns can be very helpful."

Erisciana's talk of killing all of the goblins, including the young and the elderly, sets off quite a firestorm of reactions. Butternut keeps her thoughts to herself until Lucyus focuses on her.
Lucyus wrote:"The remaining armed goblins and hobgoblins need to dealt with decisively. Any of the goblins that are unfit or children in the end will be given a choice.” Knowing Butternut he looks specifically at or for her. “They will be given mercy and some iron rations for their travels and to carry what they can from their homes. With the knowledge that they have to find a new home and return at their own peril.''
The halfling tunnelrat returns the paladin's gaze. "Given any other foe, I would agree readily. Gobbos, though... Well, my hatred of them is no secret. Still, I also know slaughterin' them wouldn't much please my patron, Arvodeen. I reckon I won't know what I would do if push came to shove until I'm in that situation. Still, as reluctant as we seem to be root them out," Butternut glances over at the foreign priestess, "we may never know."

Soon, she off looking for fresher food, with Flare and Gerett joining in the search. The upper woods have little left, which comes as no surprise, so they head further down the hill. They have little trouble harvesting a selection of edible produce. After a bite or two of lunch, they start up again. In addition to more plant-life, the afternoon provides fresh meat in the form of rabbits and a deer.

The sun is starting to droop low in the sky by time they return. Definite progress has been made on setting up fortifications and Butternut nods her approval. The team that went down the back stairs has interesting results to report.
Vernar wrote:Vernar will lead the rest of the scouts back up and regroup with the others.
Butternut listens carefully to the news. "The stuck door's unfortunate, there's no denying" she says. "As for the hobgoblins, maybe they're from among those that fell afoul of the ramp when we got attacked that first night we spent upstairs. There were enough of them that some of them might have survived the tunnels." Also, it seems the mysterious door had been a secret passage to the outside. Very interesting...
Lucyus wrote:Turning to Vernar, “Do you think we could smoke them out? We have a good amount of Alchmist’s fire. We could smoke them out from behind and await at the mouth of the Den for them to come out and purge them with Alchemist’s fire from the front as well.”
The wheels start to turn in Butternut's head upon hearing Lucyus' idea. "I like where you're going with that idea, Lucyus. The biggest issue is gonna be getting the oil or Alchemist Fire far enough into the room so the smoke doesn't all just go up back up the stairs. I recall the slot where we spied on them through being fairly small. Kaylessa, do you think we could rig some arrows wrapped with oil-soaked rags that would be tight enough to fit through that gap?"

Flare's avian friend brings other news, which he shares with the group. Seems another caravan is coming down the main road from the east. "Perhaps there's another supply depot out that way," Butternut muses.
Erisciana wrote:The priestess looks to Vernar and Lucyus. "Quite obviously, the attack on the goblins will have to wait. We need to eliminate the ogres and halt the transport of whatever is in those wagons. Everyone eat well and get rest because we will be on the move in the morning again."
Hearing Erisciana's idea, Butternut pauses a moment to consider her words. "Waiting until morning risks being too late. The hobgoblins and ogres are likely to travel all night. If they come up the hill to load up, then we may be able to catch them as they leave in the morning. Of course, they'll be on their guard from seeing the wreckage of the last caravan. If, instead, they already have a load from some other supply station, then by morning they'll be well past the point where the road down the hill meets the main road."

Erisciana, priestess of Ishtar -

Lucyus suggests the rangers, Butternut and Flare, go hunting. Erisciana remembers that Gerett mentioned he was skilled in this area also. "Butternut, you should take Gerett with you as well as he is also skilled in the hunt. And if you are able to shoot something large, another set of hands will be helpful." Erisci also feels more comfortable with three in a group, as there could be enemy in the area.

Butternut glances at the priestess. "Gladly. The company is welcome, and I wouldn't mind seeing what he can do." Butternut makes her way over to the newest dwarf in the company. "Wanna join us for some hunting and foraging, Gerett?"

"Wonderful," the priestess responds. "Good luck in your hunt!"
--------------------------------------------------------

Erisciana's talk of killing all of the goblins, including the young and the elderly, sets off quite a firestorm of reactions. Butternut keeps her thoughts to herself until Lucyus focuses on her.

"It is not reluctance, but rather priorities," Erisci responds evenly to the implied statement from the halfling ranger. "I want them gone as much as you. The time will come soon enough to take the battle to this static enemy. I want to make sure the moving parts we don't know about do not cause us undue hardship."
-------------------------------------------------------

Flare's avian friend brings other news, which he shares with the group. Seems another caravan is coming down the main road from the east. "Perhaps there's another supply depot out that way," Butternut muses.

"That is important information to glean then. We don't know if they are bringing up more weapons or supplies. Quite likely they are bringing up more supplies to the goblin depot for future use. It wouldn't make sense for them to bring up more of the same unless they had some way of communicating over long distances." The priestess contorts her lips as she thinks. "That is a possibility unfortunately."
--------------------------------------------------------

The priestess looks to Vernar and Lucyus. "Quite obviously, the attack on the goblins will have to wait. We need to eliminate the ogres and halt the transport of whatever is in those wagons. Everyone eat well and get rest because we will be on the move in the morning again."

"Hmm," the priestess says, as what the diminutive ranger suggests gives her pause. "I do believe it likely they are taking supplies to be stored at the goblin lair. And if so they likely timed their arrival for the end of their travel. And yes, the wreckage from the last caravan will potentially alert them to trouble and if they are smart they would mobilize more of the humanoids there to protect them. If they are bypassing this location, then it is a simple matter to catch up to them at their sluggish pace."

"I believe you are absolutely correct on retrospect, Butternut. I do not think we can risk that they are going past this place and then on to Fort Greystone. And if they do send the caravans onward they are likely to be more heavily guarded this time." She frowns for a moment and sighs. "This may be dangerous. Not all of us will be able to see in the dark. We'll need to create as much of our own light as possible. We also need to move quickly if we are going to beat them to the intersection. The enemy has had a day to plan as well. Let us not be overconfident."

"Lucyus, once everyone has a quick bite to eat, we need to get moving. Vernar, the scouts once more are vital in this mission. We need a vanguard ahead of the rest of the group. Make sure the hobgoblins did not set up their own scouts. Setting up an ambush again will be spectacular if we can pull it off and I am sure that your team will enjoy the pyrotechnics." Speaking to everyone again, "We will need as much magickal light as we have available and it would do to set as many alchemical fires on the initial attack as possible so that light covers the battlefield. Our focus will be to destroy wagons."

"Flare, can you please ask your friend if the numbers in this caravan are similar to the first one?"

Small Update:

The squads speak about what they have learned.
Lucyus wrote:“Careful My lady, You do not know what goes on in my heart or mind unless I speak it." His eyes an icy blue, "Lady Wimzy"".
“No I don't know what goes on in your heart and head,” Wimzy counters. “But our patrons do know and ultimately that is who we priests answer to. Everything we do we are judged by our patron .”
Erisciana wrote:"Yes, the shields and the swords of the fallen enemy could be used to erect a further barricade or used to strength the log buttresses we erect. However, I think we might think twice about leaving our food out in the elements for vermin to rummage through and for the elements to have their way. They are edible at best and may prove even worse rain soaked or infested with ants."
“While that is true,” Sorvani states, “we did purposely bring more food than we needed to keep it out of enemy hands. As long as we keep enough for ourselves and store it safely, I don't see why the extra can't be put to good use.”
Erisciana wrote:"Flare, can you please ask your friend if the numbers in this caravan are similar to the first one?"
Flare converses with his companion for a few minutes as the bird chews on fresh rabbit.

“She says the number of wagons is similar, but there are many more beings walking along the caravan.”

GM Notes:
I'm not sure it was ever mentioned how big the opening in the door at the bottom of the stairs was, so that would affect the practicality of the smoke-em-out idea.
The door itself is 4' wide and 6' high. The spy hole opening is just 2 inches high and 4 inches wide. From before, you can only see a small portion of the room so you have no idea just how big it is. The hallways in the lair were large enough for the Stone Dwarf to easily pass through, so at least there the ceilings are high. While the door openings were not high enough, the Stone Dwarf was able to pass through that one room on his way to the arena. The ceiling in the arena itself was much higher than anywhere else in the lair. In short the lair is huge and the ceilings are not all that low. Holders for torches were everywhere, so it seems smoke in the lair was not a huge issue.

I should also note that Alchemists Fire burns out quickly when lit. It burns for only two rounds on its own before it is consumed, but things it sets on fire will burn longer.

I made some improvements in the Weapon Proficiencies area of the character sheets. I've added descriptions for things like Armor and Shield proficiencies and what the individual Fighting Styles do. More information is there to tell you exactly what these abilities do.

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Vardra Marcus, PFC:
Gerett wrote:"Aye. I've come to appreciate the sky more than many o' me kin. Of course, tha sky looks nice because it highlights tha mountains," he added with a grin. "I've no taste fer it when it's over the plains. Sky's good in small doses."
It had never occurred to Vardra to consider the dwarven perspective on the sky, and Gerett lays it out pretty plain. "Hm. Never really thought about it that way. Having spent a fair bit of my time aboard the family ships, open sky feels pretty natural to me. However, I can see how it could be very different for someone who has lived in the mountains - or under them - for a good part of their life."

The next morning as they are discussing plans for the day, tempers get frayed in response to Erisciana's mention of wiping out the goblins - including the young. Strong words are spoken, and Vardra pauses to listen for a moment, but chooses not to get caught up in the verbal fray. His own perspective is pretty clear; as a soldier, he will slay opponents in battle to the best of his ability. Once the fighting is done, any remaining opponents are prisoners and should be treated as such.

The question of helping the fort comes up. Gerett agrees with Vardra that their small band are unlikely to be able to make much of a dent in a thousands strong army. Erisciana seems to think otherwise, but stops short of demanding that they ride down and attack.

Sorvani put forth the idea of using the crates and enemy weapons to help build protective fortifications, which seems to meet with some approval. "Perhaps take it a step further and use some of the leftover armor and weapons to build manikins to resemble guards standing about the fortifications. It certainly won't bear close examination, but from a distance may make it look like there are more of us. They might even draw arrow fire from attackers that might otherwise hit some of us. Every wound we avoid helps."
Erisciana wrote:"Thank you, Vardra," she responds with a nod. "The Queen of the Heavens has rewarded her follower with access to the tertiary magnitude of blessings. I am honored to have received these new blessings."
"So that spell is unique to your faith? That's interesting," the soldier muses.

News comes - via Flare's bird - that an enemy convoy is coming down the main road headed toward the fort. Erisciana proposes getting a night's rest and assaulting it in the morning. In response, Butternut points out that doing so could - depending on the caravan's intent - result in the convoy getting past them and resupplying the attacking army. This causes the priestess to reconsider and urge the squad to prepare for a nighttime attack on this new supply train.

When queried, M'Lady informs them - through the ranger - that this convoy is more heavily guarded than the last. With the difficulty many of the squad, including himself, have in seeing at night, this battle will no doubt be even tougher than the previous one. The desire for glory seems to outweigh the inclination toward prudence within this group. He can only hope that the price to be paid in such a battle will not prove too steep. Vardra looks over to Gerett to see what his thoughts on this are.

Vernar -
When the priestess puts forth the possibility of killing all the goblins in the caverns below, Gerett responded with similar distaste in what seemed to be a potentially necessary action.
Vernar does not rise to the bait, remaining quiet and stoic. If Erisciana is fishing for allies for the wholesale slaughter she suggested, she is going to have to dig much deeper. Humans change their minds almost as fast as their first words are uttered, so this discussion is hardly worth more than the few thoughts in his head. Vernar indeed wants to finish them - any combatants that raise a blade against him whether they be male, female, or child, will meet their end swiftly. However, that is far different from moving from room to room pulling out females and children from hidey holes and gutting them just for thoroughness. The dwarf puts such thoughts from his mind as the human priestess continues to try to sway the others.
The priestess looks to Vernar and Lucyus. "Quite obviously, the attack on the goblins will have to wait. We need to eliminate the ogres and halt the transport of whatever is in those wagons. Everyone eat well and get rest because we will be on the move in the morning again."

"It be best t' be trackin' 'em and hit 'em at the first rays o' dawn," Vernar adds. "If they be takin' the same path as the first caravan, they be findin' that way not so easy with the traps and wreckage. If they be pickin' another route, then it be easy enough t' get ahead of 'em once they be spotted."
Vernar nods and then moves to gather up the rest of the scouts. "Alright," he will say. "This be much the same as last time. We take more o' the Fire with us t' be usin' as a trap. We need t' find out where they be goin' t' see if we can be hittin' them at dawn t' benefit the humans in our group. Be ready t' be improvisin' should it not work out in our favor."

Laurel trudges beside their small caravan back to Eagles Nest. She is tired and disappointed in herself. She is finally met with relief when the familiar ascent to the Keep is seen. Once there she assists however she can in preparing for the night and is glad to see that Eagles Nest has remained untouched as far as anybody can tell. As the sun sets Laurels attention is drawn by Erisciana calling the group to her:
Erisciana wrote: "In my sect, after a particularly important battle, the members of that battle would engage in a ritual to signify their 'baptism of fire' as it were. Today was our baptism of fire. It has been an honor to do battle with all of you this day and strike a powerful blow against our enemy."
Laurel will slowly approach the small circle forming and do as instructed. She was glad to have been there, even if her role was small. Then again...she would probably never be able to take down an ogre or even a hob goblin on her own. Comparing her skill set to those of the warriors in this group would be like comparing apples to oranges -or cats to dogs. She grins as she thinks about the time Malf was chased up a tree by a watch dog. Two different creatures. After the ritual the group begins dividing up watches for the night and Laurel is assigned to rest and regain spells. She will take advantage of her time to talk more with Sann on Dwarvish history if he is available. She will also spend time communing with Felix.

The next morning there is discussion about what to do next. Some people keep watch and others explore the ruins below the keep and others still try to find fresh food for the group. For this Laurel is especially grateful as iron rations wouldn't rank high on her list of favorite meals. Her train of thought is interrupted by Butternut chasing down Vernar:
Butternut wrote: "Hey, partner, think we'll be going down the back stair today? I'm lookin' forward to rootin' out those gobbos!"
Vernar wrote: "That be my choice. "Finish 'em an' be done with this mess. Been thinkin' it be good t' be knowin' how t' understand those vermin. Think you might be up t' teachin' me their language?"
Butternut wrote:"I'd be happy to, Vernar, if that's what you want. The language is as ugly as they are, but it is good to know one's enemies."
Laurel will sidle over to the small group and pipe up, "I'd like to listen in if a lesson is being given...I'm pretty good with picking up languages."

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Laurel is inclined to root out the goblins. The thought of killing innocents does not sit well with her but agrees with Erisciana that our victory must be total. She is pleased when alternatives are discussed when new news comes from Flare:
Flare wrote:“M'Lady has spotted another caravan coming down the main road from Gateway,” Flare will report. “It looks similar to the other caravan with ogres doing the pulling.”
This sets off another flurry of discussion. Laurel will voice concern that this caravan could be an ambush because that dark elf is still out there somewhere and likely has communicated our disruptive presence. We are no longer in Hextors "blind spot" so to speak. However, she agrees with Gerett's previously voiced sentiments,
Gerett wrote: "In the battle at the Fort, we're just another handful of soldiers, drops in a bucket.

Butternut:
Laurel wrote:Laurel will sidle over to the small group and pipe up, "I'd like to listen in if a lesson is being given... I'm pretty good with picking up languages."
Butternut looks up and gives the quiet priestess a ragged smile. "Sure, join us. If you're good with languages, perhaps soon you'll be helping me try to teach this hard-headed dwarf," she says with a smirk and a flick of her hand in Vernar's direction.

When they hear of a new supply train from Flare's companion, Erisciana talks about attacking them in the morning. Butternut comments that doing so may be too late, to which Vernar agrees. The Zhakharan priestess comes around to their way of thinking, and a decision is made to investigate the new wagon train tonight.
Vernar wrote:Vernar nods and then moves to gather up the rest of the scouts. "Alright," he will say. "This be much the same as last time. We take more o' the Fire with us t' be usin' as a trap. "Sounds like my kind of plan, Vernar," Butternut replies, grinning. She makes sure to collect up several vials each of oil and Alchemist's Fire. While the strange concoction doesn't burn long, it should do a good job of setting the wagon's alight. Oil, on the other hand, is much better for generating light for a battle. Butternut also stuffs a small bag full of rags and strips of cloth to use with the oil.

Erisciana, priestess of Ishtar -

The moral discussion continues...

As you said my patron is one of Honor and Justice. He is also for Mercy and the Protector of the weak.”

“No I don't know what goes on in your heart and head,” Wimzy counters. “But our patrons do know and ultimately that is who we priests answer to. Everything we do we are judged by our patron.”

"Unfortunately, we have no High Priests here to council us. Only what we have learned and what we know to be true. We should not forget, as Gerett said, we are at war." The priestess looks around at the faces of the others. Most are sullen, but few are willing to add to the conversation. As a priestess, she was taught that it was her duty to counsel others, as best she could. She was fairly certain that according to her own moral understanding that killing through abandonment and disregard was morally equivalent to doing the killing oneself, face to face. Perhaps one let you sleep better at night.

The priestess put up her hands. "If that is the justification that is needed, so be it." Certainly she would not have suggested the culling of the entire tribe if they were humans or dwarves or any other reasonable humanoid. There were more important issues remaining regarding the enemy in the area.
--------------------------------------------------

Varda comments on the Fortification spell which Erisci uses to create a small natural bulwark along the road to Eagle's Nest.

"Thank you, Vardra," she responds with a nod. "The Queen of the Heavens has rewarded her follower with access to the tertiary magnitude of blessings. I am honored to have received these new blessings."

"So that spell is unique to your faith? That's interesting," the soldier muses.

"Hmmm, of that I think unlikely. The Queen of Heavens certainly commands the divine sphere of War. However other deities would have access to such as well, as I understand. But the tertiary magnitude of spells is not quickly granted to a follower. It is said that the first two magnitudes are a function of our belief in our god or goddess. Our study and immersion in the devotions allow a loyal follower access to divine benefits, including healing, but these are simple, rudimentary blessings in general. The tertiary magnitude is the first step to truly connecting with one's godhead," she says as she raises her hand to the sky. "This morning I was visited during my orison by a spiritual disciple of the goddess. It was quite exciting and awe inspiring," she says with a blushing smile.
-----------------------------------------------

The priestess asks their ranger with the avian companion more details about what the bird saw. "Flare, can you please ask your friend if the numbers in this caravan are similar to the first one?"

Flare converses with his companion for a few minutes as the bird chews on fresh rabbit. “She says the number of wagons is similar, but there are many more beings walking along the caravan.”

Erisci makes a sour face. "I was afraid of that. We have just enough information to not have enough information. This may be a reinforcement supply to the siege. Or it may be a supply caravan with extra troops. The only way to get any more information is to beat them to the intersection and determine if we can safely engage."

Vardra seems unsure of the idea, despite Vernar and Butternut's obvious enthusiasm. This sets off another flurry of discussion. Laurel will voice concern that this caravan could be an ambush because that dark elf is still out there somewhere and likely has communicated our disruptive presence. We are no longer in Hextor's "blind spot" so to speak. However, she agrees with Gerett's previously voiced sentiments.

"They could be trying to draw us out, certainly," Erisci agrees. "Regardless we need to adjust the course of the battle to our advantage. And the more of the enemy that we engage and destroy, the more we relieve Greystone. The more chance we give them to break the siege. But you arte correct and unfortunately we have not been in Hextor's 'blind spot' since we raised the black flag to warn the fort. I doubt that will change while the enemy army remains on the field."

"If we are able to delay that long, it would be ideal. Although from the description of their location, they seem to be only several hours away from the intersection."

Erisci will speak briefly to the scouts in the group before they leave. "We expect to use similar tactics as well. We should have many more Sleep spells at our disposal than the last ambush, as well as other magicks. The rest of the group will not be far behind you. Good hunting!"

“As you point out, Control is an illusion. One can not control everything, only oneself. If they are sent to their ways and ill will befall them, then so be it. I did everything I could within reason to honour my word, so my heart is clear.” He says evenly to the priestess.

News of a supply caravan are soon heard of-
"That is important information to glean then.
“It is possible that these wagons could be siege weapons too.” He says evenly. “If the siege is not going well, they will do everything in their power to breech the walls of the fort.
The priestess looks to Vernar and Lucyus. "Quite obviously, the attack on the goblins will have to wait. We need to eliminate the ogres and halt the transport of whatever is in those wagons. Everyone eat well and get rest because we will be on the move in the morning again."
“I can cast light when it is needed.” He says in reply. “I could put it upon a rock or arrow so that it can easily be hidden or released to another location.”
Lucyus nods in agreement. There is nothing worse than having to fight on an empty stomach. “I heard the hunt went well, much to the skill of our Rangers. I’ll see that everyone eats and is ready.”
Lucyus will make sure that the others eat and are ready to move out.

When the hunters return, Kaylessa will congragulate them on a fruitful day of hunting and foraging.
Taking a bit of the fresh fruit, Kaylessa looks to the dwarf. “Perhaps, I should wrap a few arrow tips to hold a flame for a time? How many yards do you want us apart? It is possible they may have their own scouts out this night.”

Taking a few of the torch heads, Kaylessa will see if there is a way she can secure the torch’s thatching to 5 arrows tips, wrapped with scrap cloth.
Kaylessa will be ready to move out once she grabs a couple vials of oil. She will gather her gear and follow Vernar and the other scouts.
