Sylvan Realm #32 (#76)

December 7th, CR 571 or Deepnight 29th, 20,519 AP

The Elder City named Shelvestra had seen better days. It has been built sometime in the very distant past. It is believed that the race that modern scholars call the Elders lived in this place until around 65 million years ago when they all perished in some unknown fashion.

With no Elders left to tend to Shelvestra it fell into ruins. The terrain around it greatly changed over the passage of the eons. What had once been ideal terrain for a city slowly changed into a swamp and Shelvestra sank into its depths, remaining in that state for untold millions of years.

More recently the malignant race known as the HIVE found their way into the ruins some 400 years ago. After a disastrous attempt to cease control of Kingsport, what remained of the HIVE fled for their lives. In the days and weeks that followed they made their way across the wilderness to a place that they had learned about from those they had absorbed. The humans called it the Great Swamp. It sounded like a perfect place for the HIVE to take refuge and regroup. It vaguely sounded like home. In time they would grow strong once more and begin their campaign of conquest anew.

Decades later, what remained of the HIVE came across the what little remained of the Elder City. There was a presence there and the HIVE Queen was drawn to it. It took many years and much digging, but the object of her search was eventually found. It was the remains of something, just what she couldn't be sure what. It looked like it had been dead for a long time, but that was really not the case. Only its broken bones remained, but there was a power in those bones. Without even realizing what she was doing, the HIVE Queen consumed these ancient bones.

The mind of the HIVE Queen suddenly was consumed by knowledge and information that nearly overwhelmed her. Her kind had the ability to take the knowledge and skills of others and make them their own. Those bones was surely the very last of its kind. Its mental essence had somehow survived for untold millennia in a greatly weakened state. That power and knowledge now belonged to the HIVE Queen.

Kylie and Gweyr discuss things magical.
Kylie wrote:"I had been getting that sense," Kylie says with a chuckle, "though you are rather subtle about it... Personally, I tend to approach magic from a somewhat academic bent; I really enjoy gaining a deeper understanding of how the universe works."
“I am anything but subtle,” Gweyr answers with a laugh. “But to be serious for a moment, I can be studious and do enjoy as you say the academic and research side of magic. The powers that I wield are very dangerous and for the most part I have to restrain myself. But there are those rare times, such as on this mission, where the restrains come off and I can cut loose to my full potential. Those are the times where I can enjoy myself the most.”

The invading coalition was now spread across the ruins of the Shelvestra. Miles away, the trio of dragons was contending with a quintet of black dragons. The dwarves, being slower, were left about a mile back among some of the very few buildings still left in the ruins. It would provide some measure of protection should one of the black dragons approach. Lord Sharadin and Captain Roma remained with them.

The elves, led by Kylie, Lilia and Gweyr had flown ahead in an attempt locate the weak life signs the couatl Quirin had sensed. Instead they found more surviving buildings surrounded by eggs. One of these eggs hatched to reveal a slug-like creature. This creature was drawn to the central building. There lizard men and frog-like creatures had been collected and were in various stages of being consumed by the HIVE larva.

Sickened by this sight, Lilia casts a Fireball into the midst of the area. Kylie adds a second Fireball and much of the 'feeding area' goes up in flames. Any living thing caught in the fiery magic is slain instantly. Those things on the edge of the explosive magic shriek in pain from the flames before dying. This death shriek fills the immediate area. Most of the feeding area goes up in flames, but a few pockets still do remain where larva and head hunters are waiting to hatch.

The pair of Fireballs are noted by those who followed on the ground. They had caught up to Gweyr and the fire mage told them about the field of eggs and to keep their distance for safety. Right after that the Fireballs go off followed by the dying screams of something.

“Seems like they found something to burn,” Gweyr offers offhandedly. “I can only guess what.”

Another roar is now heard far off in the distance. Valena focuses in on it as she was already keeping watch. The noise came off from where the dragons were fighting. A shadowy form streaks across the underground sky towards the hatchery. Thanks to their keen eyesight, Laucian and Valena are the first to glimpse just what it is. One of the black dragons is heading towards you!

“Remember what Lord Sharadin said,” Andlin calls out as he grasps his sword and shield. “Spread out to limit the effectiveness of its breath weapon. We must keep this foe away from the Queen!”

GM Notes:

Kylie and Lilia could hear the dragon's roar as well.

Now what?

Laucian watches as Gweyr directs here elemental to begin cooking the eggs. Onas and Valena begin speaking of not having enough arrows.
“Then only use what you need to.” The experienced ranger says. “I am sure Gweyr’s Elemental is far more than up for the task.”

“I am more worried about what may be drawn to our friends spells and noise.” He says in return. If Able I want to activate his Chameleon Power ring.
Not long after a roar is heard off in the distance,
Another roar is now heard far off in the distance. Valena focuses in on it as she was already keeping watch. The noise came off from where the dragons were fighting. One of the black dragons is heading towards you!
Laucian unconsciously knocks an arrow upon his bow as he moves to spread out from the others. “Gewyr, Be mindful of your surroundings. Your elemental is like a beacon down here!" He then peers into the darkness for a time. A shadowy form streaks across the underdark sky. Swallowing hard he feel the pit of his stomach turn as he realizes that there is a dragon coming for them. “Dragon!” he calls out to the others.
“Remember what Lord Sharadin said,” Andlin calls out as he grasps his sword and shield. “Spread out to limit the effectiveness of its breath weapon. We must keep this foe away from the Queen!”
Laucian will move off and try to find cover, If he wasn’t able to activate his ring he will do so now, Then he will begin to take aim at the shadowy form of the dragon.( Do not turn his back on the way it came from.)
Til Ehlonna's will be done

“Should we go to them?”she asks the others as she lowers her cowl becoming more comfortable in the dark.
A roar is hears putting the Followers of Ehlonna on alert. Lia looks about with her violet eyes.
“Dragon!” he calls out to the others.
“Remember what Lord Sharadin said,” Andlin calls out as he grasps his sword and shield. “Spread out to limit the effectiveness of its breath weapon. We must keep this foe away from the Queen!”
Lia will move say 15 ft from Andlin and draw her sword. She will then call upon her faith and cast fearie fire upon the dragon in the hopes it wont be able to hide as much in the dark.

Kylie nods, pursing her lips pensively. "That is a good point, Gweyr, and I'm glad you understand the need for restraint. I will say that I don't think I get as much enjoyment from my magic as you do.

"Unlike me, my mother seems to have fairly little interest in the academic side. To her, magic is just a tool or a weapon to be wielded when the need arises. She focuses on a small number of very useful spells, and mostly ignores the rest."

===

First Lilia and then Kylie cast Fireballs down into the Hive larva feeding ground. The shrieking of the dying larva causes the half-elf to wince; despicable as these creatures are, their obvious agony leaves her a bit queasy.

Moments later, the roar of an approaching dragon is heard. "Uh-oh, sounds like trouble," Kylie says softly, glancing toward Lilia. Her instincts kicking in, she scans about the ruins for a darkened corner to hide herself in. Perhaps getting a jump on the beast will provide an advantage...

Onas Brightsword:

As the elemental burns through the egg-pods, they hear a pair of Fireball spells go off in the direction that Kylie and the queen had gone, followed by a moment of agonized shrieking.
Gweyr wrote:“Seems like they found something to burn,” Gweyr offers offhandedly. “I can only guess what.”
"The larva were all going that way, so that much is likely," Onas suggests. "What else there may have been?" he can only shrug.
Laucian wrote:“I am more worried about what may be drawn to our friends spells and noise.” He says in return.
The ranger's words prove prophetic as soon a black dragon is spotted winging their way. "Great..." Onas mutters to himself. He's never fought a dragon before, and cannot help wondering if this will mark the end of his young life.
Andlin wrote:“Remember what Lord Sharadin said,” Andlin calls out as he grasps his sword and shield. “Spread out to limit the effectiveness of its breath weapon. We must keep this foe away from the Queen!”
"Hold up just a second, please," Onas says. Calling upon his patron, the crusader casts Prayer upon those nearby. "Be well, and let's support each other. Teamwork is our best hope against this great beast."

Onas then looks about for some cover away from the other members of the group. Spotting a large stump and downed tree, he moves behind them and crouches to await the dragon's arrival. He flips up the hood of his Cloak of Elvenkind so as to better blend into the environment. As he waits, he prays to Angharradh for her divine assistance against this great beast.

Lilia:

A pair of Fireballs take out most of the repulsive HIVE feeding area. A loud roar is heard far off in the distance.
Kylie wrote:Moments later, the roar of an approaching dragon is heard. "Uh-oh, sounds like trouble," Kylie says softly, glancing toward Lilia. Her instincts kicking in, she scans about the ruins for a darkened corner to hide herself in. Perhaps getting a jump on the beast will provide an advantage...
“Not a surprise,” Lilia remarks. “If the HIVE are all joined together, then they know what we have done and are not pleased.”

Lilia really doesn't notice Kylie looking for cover and instead flies back where we left Gweyr. The others have arrived in the meantime. They are already spread out in preparation of the dragon attack.

“Looks like we will be battling the HIVE once more,” Lilia notes as she flies towards her comrades. “Attack the beast and withdraw for safety. Don't let it focus on any one of us. Keep giving it a new target. Strike it from surprise.”

Once close enough, Lilia will cast Magic Missile as the approaching dragon.

Valena:

The Silver Maiden finds herself having too many targets to shoot at.
Onas wrote:"Nor I," Onas says to the leader of the Silver Maidens. "Perhaps we should focus on those that have already hatched." Onas draws his bow and begins shooting any of the slugs that he can see moving towards the walls.
Laucian wrote:“Then only use what you need to.” The experienced ranger says. “I am sure Gweyr’s Elemental is far more than up for the task.”
“Agreed, Forest Brother,” Valena answers. “Save your arrows for the truly dangerous targets.”

Fireballs erupt from the general area where Gweyr said Lilia and Kylie had gone. Obviously, this was their handy work.
Gweyr wrote:“Seems like they found something to burn,” Gweyr offers offhandedly. “I can only guess what.”
Onas wrote:"The larva were all going that way, so that much is likely," Onas suggests. "What else there may have been?" he can only shrug.
“Food,” Valena states matter-of-factually as she keeps watch. “Newborns need nourishment. Just what they eat, I think I'd rather not know.”
Lia wrote:“Should we go to them?” she asks the others as she lowers her cowl becoming more comfortable in the dark.
“They can fend for themselves,” Valena answers. “If they need aid, they will call for it.”

A roar is heard from far off and soon a dark shape is seen closing in. Laucian calls out “Dragon!” before Valena can do so.
Andlin wrote:“Remember what Lord Sharadin said,” Andlin calls out as he grasps his sword and shield. “Spread out to limit the effectiveness of its breath weapon. We must keep this foe away from the Queen!”
“Right,” Valena says as she starts to move away from the group. That is until Onas calls everyone back.
Onas wrote:"Hold up just a second, please," Onas says. Calling upon his patron, the crusader casts Prayer upon those nearby. "Be well, and let's support each other. Teamwork is our best hope against this great beast."
“Agreed,” is all that Valena can say before Lilia returns.
Lilia wrote:“Looks like we will be battling the HIVE once more,” Lilia notes as she flies towards her comrades. “Attack the beast and withdraw for safety. Don't let it focus on any one of us. Keep giving it a new target. Strike it from surprise.”
Valena nods her understanding and moves off. Once about thirty paces away, she prepares herself for what is come. An arrow is nocked in her bow and ready to be fire. More will follow.

December 7th, CR 571 or Deepnight 29th, 20,519 AP

Now the HIVE Queen could see through new eyes and she realized just what this place was. It had been a great city built by a highly advanced race. That race was able to control things with just their minds. That race called themselves the Chiliz. They had built a great many things that would be very useful to the HIVE.

Time passed, as it is prone to do. The HIVE slowly rebuilt themselves, capturing the native lizard creatures to increase their numbers. These new drones worked to recover Shelvestra and its wonderful artifacts.

As for the HIVE Queen, she drifted among the memories and experiences that she had absorbed. It was a massive puzzle trying to put these chaotic and random thoughts into some semblance of order. For untold years, the HIVE Queen simply contemplated what she had learned, occasionally giving the others new tasks to perform.

One day the drones had uncovered a large formation of pillars. Searching her inherited memories, the HIVE Queen realized that this large formation was used for travel between the six Chiliz cities on this world. Instead the HIVE Queen found something that she did not expect. There were now only three Chiliz cities. Something happened twenty thousand years ago and the other three vanished along. There was a reference to a Project Exodus having been executed, but no further information could be found.

Of the other two cities that remained, neither destination seemed useful. One was underwater far to the east. The other was to the north and seemingly buried beneath the earth like Shelvestra had been. But there were other options. Two of the smaller Pillar Artifacts were somewhere within this city. Perhaps they would prove more useful. And so the HIVE Queen returned to her contemplations while the drones continued to dig.

Kylie wrote:Kylie nods, pursing her lips pensively. "That is a good point, Gweyr, and I'm glad you understand the need for restraint. I will say that I don't think I get as much enjoyment from my magic as you do.”
“It is a lesson all mages need to learn,” Gweyr adds. “We all control very powerful forces. If we make a mistake, it could be fatal.”
Kylie wrote:"Unlike me, my mother seems to have fairly little interest in the academic side. To her, magic is just a tool or a weapon to be wielded when the need arises. She focuses on a small number of very useful spells, and mostly ignores the rest."
Gweyr just shrugs. “We are all different people so naturally our approaches are different as well. Whatever works I guess!”

Those following after Kylie and Lilia reach the egg field and find Gweyr there using her conjured Fire Elemental to burn the eggs. Fireballs go off in the distance where Kylie and Lilia had gone.
Onas wrote:"The larva were all going that way, so that much is likely," Onas suggests. "What else there may have been?" he can only shrug.
Valena wrote:“Food,” Valena states matter-of-factually as she keeps watch. “Newborns need nourishment. Just what they eat, I think I'd rather not know.”
“EWWW!”, Gweyr says in disgust.

“I agree with your thoughts, Valena,” Andlin adds. “I'd rather not know.”

The black dragon is spotted coming closer! Onas casts Prayer on those present and the elves spread out as Lord Sharadin suggested earlier. Lilia returns, but Kylie nowhere to be seen.
Laucian wrote:Laucian unconsciously nocks an arrow upon his bow as he moves to spread out from the others. “Gweyr, be mindful of your surroundings. Your elemental is like a beacon down here!"
“Can't be helped, dear!” the Fire Mage calls out. “Fire is very bright. Given the choice, I'd assume the dragon attack my elemental than anyone else!”

“But there is something else I can do to help,” Gweyr adds. She lands among the other elves to accept the Prayer spell. Gweyr then casts her own spell and far off in the distance, another Gweyr appears! This double is about 120 yards away.

“A Projected Image,” Gweyr explains. “An illusion that I can cast spells through. Handy to keep me from being mauled by a dragon!”

Lilia wrote:“Looks like we will be battling the HIVE once more,” Lilia notes as she flies towards her comrades. “Attack the beast and withdraw for safety. Don't let it focus on any one of us. Keep giving it a new target. Strike it from surprise.”
“Already on top of it, Your Highness,” Andlin calls out. “We'll give the beast a warm welcome.”

“No, I'll give it a warm welcome!” Gweyr casts another spell but the effect originates from her illusionary double. Predictably, the Fire Mage casts a Fireball at the rapidly approaching dragon! The spell explodes on the dragon very far away and for a brief instant the beast is illuminated. The dragon is over 100' long in length!

Gweyr's Fireball was massive, inexplicably bigger and fancier than any other Fireball anyone here has ever seen cast. And somehow the dragon simply brushes it off!

“I hate magic resistance!” Gweyr complains.

The rapidly approaching black dragon makes a beeline towards the source of the Fireball and its claws pass harmlessly through Gweyr's illusion. Its too dark to tell if the dragon is surprised by the illusion or not. Instead is just continues to fly towards the group!

Gweyr casts a second Fireball and this one does get a reaction out of the dragon! It must have hurt it for it to roar like that!

The sudden flash of light gives the archers a better target to hit and both Laucian and Valena fire three arrows each. Two of Laucian's connect, while all three of Valena's rend the dragons hide! Still the beast continues to approach!

Lia gets in on the act as the dragon reaches the limits of her infravision. The drow priestess casts a Faerie Fire spell and the tip of the nose of the dragon now glows!

Lilia follows up the ranged attacks and sends a swarm of five Magic Missiles into the dragons hide!

Andlin bangs his sword on his shield in an attempt to draw the dragon towards him. Arlen does the same. Onas watches from a short distance away, weapons at the ready.

The dragon sails closer and starts to approach the ground. Suddenly, the black dragon hits the ground and starts to tumble forwards out of control! Everyone runs for cover, trying to avoid the huge tumbling mass!

Gweyr and Lilia simply rise up higher into the air with their flight spells. Laucian and Valena were far enough off to the sides to avoid the dragon. The others were not so fortunate! Lia and Onas are struck by the wildly whipping about tail and sent to through the air and then to the ground. Andlin and Arlen seem to take the brunt of the out of control dragon and disappear under the dragon!

The dragon rolls onward a little longer and comes to a stop in the egg field. Any eggs the dragon rolled over were crushed. The black dragon does not move and just lies there sprawled out as if unconscious.

Andlin and Arlen are both found. They were hurt from the dragon rolling over them, but are otherwise still alive.

Laucian

“A Projected Image,” Gweyr explains. “An illusion that I can cast spells through. Handy to keep me from being mauled by a dragon!”
“Or to strike out from.”Laucian says simply. He is finding himself respecting the fire mage more. For she is showing him tactics he was not aware of or atleast naïve too.
A fireball goes off in the distance and the dragon merely brushes it off but the scary part is the figure is over 100ft long! A second Fireball erupts and the dragon roars in pain. Pulling back his bow he aims and fires, quickly repeating the motion. One goes wide but the others find their make.

“Atleast we can penetrate it’s armor!” the ranger calls out as the dragon’s nose begins to glow. It looks like a nightmarish and twisted from the purple hue.

“Look out!" He barely gets out as the dragon tumbles out of the air, He looks in horror as some of his comrades gets rolled on!

The dragon rolls onward a little longer and comes to a stop in the egg field. Any eggs the dragon rolled over were crushed. The black dragon does not move and just lies there sprawled out as if unconscious.
“Let us make sure it is dispatched. We don’t need an injured dragon inbetween us and our friends.” Laucian says knocking an arrow and aiming for a softer more vulnerable spot in the dragon’s body.( eyes if he is able)

Lia
Fireball after fireball are sent into the gloom of the cavern. Briefly the silhouette of the dragon can be seen causing the priestess to swallow. “I didn’t know they grew that big!” she says more to herself than anyone.
Lia bravely steps up and uses Fearie Fire upon it. In the hopes of making it easier to see. The dragon’s nose soon begins to glow like some nightmarish reindeer.
The dragon dips and hits the ground rolling. Unable to get out of the way, it’s tail slams into the priestess sending her flying. She lands with a umpf as she feels and hears crunching beneath her. A wet feeling seeps into her armor as she gains her footing.
Looking down all you hear is the elf say, “Ewww Egg guts!” as she stands up a little sore from the strike and landing. The dragon lies motionless and Lia regains her sword. “Make sure it is dead. Know telling what trickery these dragons will go through to kill an elf.” Lia imparts as she casts Magic Missile from her ring. ( Should have one remaining by Cleric build)
The last thing you shall hear is the bladesong of my sword.

Lilia:

Lilia has flown back to the other elves as the black dragon approaches.
Andlin wrote:“Already on top of it, Your Highness,” Andlin calls out. “We'll give the beast a warm welcome.”
“Very good,” Lilia says in a pleased tone. Both Andlin and Arlen are skilled in leading others into battle and do not require supervision.
Gweyr wrote:“No, I'll give it a warm welcome!” Gweyr casts another spell but the effect originates from her illusionary double.

Lilia is impressed at the magical skill that Gweyr possesses. She casts a Projected Image spell, signifying that her she's a more potent mage than either Kylie or myself. From the safety of the illusion, she casts a pair of unusual looking Fireballs. Having casts many of her own Fireballs, Lilia knows what they look like. But it seems that Gweyr is able to alter the parameters of hers on the fly. It does remind the Elf Maiden on how Argent did something similar with her Magic Missile spells.

The dragon is wounded by the second Fireball as it is pelted by arrows from our most skilled archers, Laucian and Valena. Lia illuminates the tip of its snout, making it an easy target. Lilia casts Magic Missile and five of the enchanted arrows embed themselves into the dragon.

The dragon continues to fly closer, but starts to fall from the sky. It hits the ground hard and tumbles closer. Lilia and Gweyr rise upward to escape this new danger. The others are not as fortunate. Laucian and Valena are far enough away to avoid the attack. Lia and Onas are struck by the tail and sent flying. Andlin and Arlen are rolled over!

Once clear, Lilia flies in and lands near Arlen and Andlin.

“Are you hurt?” Lilia inquires. “Do you need healing?”

Lilia keeps one eye on the others as they gather about the downed dragon, but for now does not join them. She's more concerned about the injured.

Valena:

Valena takes aim and fires a succession of arrows into the dragons side. To her amazement, they all pierce the dragons thick hide! The dragon crashes and tumbles forward, taking out anyone in its way. Valena leaps for safety and tumbles on the muddy ground.

She's back on her feet in flash, rushing back towards her companions. Another arrows is nocked in her bow as she approaches. Lilia lands and tends to her warriors, while Lia is heard off in the distance. Valena spots Onas and moves closer to him.

“Up and at them, Forest Rider,” Valena say as she passes close to Onas. “This battle may not be over with yet.”

Valena keeps her distance and has an arrow ready to fire should the dragon being playing possum.

Lilia wrote:“Not a surprise,” Lilia remarks. “If the HIVE are all joined together, then they know what we have done and are not pleased.”
Kylie pauses a second in thought. "Do you think the dragons have been infected? I hadn't considered that; wouldn't have thought that they could punch through the dragons' heavy scales..."

Kylie settles into some shadows in a corner of a partial standing wall. Peeking around the edge, she watches the dragon approach across the vast cavern.
Lilia wrote:“Looks like we will be battling the HIVE once more,” Lilia notes as she flies towards her comrades. “Attack the beast and withdraw for safety. Don't let it focus on any one of us. Keep giving it a new target. Strike it from surprise.”
Kylie hears Lilia's words dimly from the distance, but one part catches her attention. ' "Strike it from surprise." Funny, that's just what I plan to do,' Kylie thinks to herself. She mentally reviews the spells she has left, and ways that they might be used against the dragon.

Observing from her spot in the shadows, Kylie sees a duplicate of Gweyr appear some distance away. The duplicate launches an enormous Fireball at the dragon. 'Wow,' Kylie murmurs to herself, both in response to the size of the ball of fire and the size of the now-illuminated dragon. However, the dragons seems to shake off the spell and keeps coming.

A second Fireball from the faux Gweyr causes the beast to roar in pain. Laucian and Vallena both shoot arrows at the dragon, many of which appear to pierce its thick hide. Suddenly, the dragon's nose starts to glow brightly. "What on earth...?" Kylie muses, uncertain what strange dragonish ability this denotes. Magic Missiles fired by LIlia strike home as well.

Seeing an opening, Kylie loops around the wall and flies toward the dragon's flank, rising higher and higher into the air as she goes. However, before she can get into range, the dragon wobbles in the air and then plows into the ground, tumbling over and over as it tears a deep furrow into the ground. Frighteningly, several members of their team are unable to get out of the way and are injured by the dying drake!

Racing closer, Kylie calls out, "Is everyone okay?" She hears Lilia asking Arlen and Andlin a similar question as she approaches. Valena helps Onas to his feet, while Laucian and Lia focus on making sure that the dragon is truly dead.

Onas Brightsword:
Valena wrote:“Food,” Valena states matter-of-factually as she keeps watch. “Newborns need nourishment. Just what they eat, I think I'd rather not know.”
When the question of what the larva were after in the central area comes up, Valena provides the gruesome answer. "Ugh. Neither would I," Onas agrees. Gweyr voices her concurrent disgust at the thought of what the larva might consume.

As the dragon wings toward them, most of the elves gather around and Onas calls on the power of his patron to protect them all. Then it is time to prepare for the creature's arrival. The group spread out to avoid being too good of a target for the dragon's acid. Gweyr creates some kind of magical doppelganger, and the battle is on.

While Arlen, Andlin, and himself prepare to engage the beast with their sword once it lands, the others use ranged attacks before it can close. Spells and arrows do massive damage to the dragon. As it swoops in low, the wounds take their toll causing the fell black dragon to lose control and crash, skidding wildly along the ground. It seems to tumble over his brother Arlen and their friend Andlin, crushing them under its bulk. As the beast's tail flails about, it catches Onas painfully in the ribs, lifting him up and smashing him back to the ground.
Valena wrote:“Up and at them, Forest Rider,” Valena say as she passes close to Onas. “This battle may not be over with yet.”
"Yes, ma'am," Onas groans as he levers himself to his feet. A sharp pain in his ribs seems to indicate that one of them might be broken.
Kylie wrote:Racing closer, Kylie calls out, "Is everyone okay?"
Onas nods as he staggers toward the downed warriors. "Yeah, it only hurts when I breathe." Stepping up to Arlen, Onas does a quick assessment and provides healing as needed, then turns and does the same for Andlin. If he has any left, he'll provide minor healing for himself and Lia as well; otherwise, bandaging will have to do.

The black dragon that was bearing down on the elves was surprisingly brought down with spells and arrows. It crashed into the ground before the main group of elves and tumbled out of control until it stopped partially into the field of eggs. All is quiet for a few moments as the dust settles.

Several of the elves move towards the dragon, while others inspect their comrades. Laucian and Valena have arrows at the ready. On the other side of the huge beast Lia picks herself up among the crushed eggs. She casts a Magic Missile from her Holy Ring of Eilistraee but the dragon does not react to it.

Lilia moves to help Andlin and Arlen.
Lilia wrote:“Are you hurt?” Lilia inquires. “Do you need healing?”
“I'll live,” Andlin offers with a grimace. “But I may not enjoy it.”

“Let's never do that again,” Arlen mutters as he struggles to his feet.

Onas shakily comes to his feet as well after being struck by the dragons tail. He does some minor healing on himself and Lia, and then adds more healing to Andlin and Arlen after Lilia has.

“Thank you,”Arlen will offer as his appearance notably improves.
Kylie wrote:Racing closer, Kylie calls out, "Is everyone okay?" She hears Lilia asking Arlen and Andlin a similar question as she approaches. Valena helps Onas to his feet, while Laucian and Lia focus on making sure that the dragon is truly dead.
“Hurting, but alive,” Andlin will offer as he too rises to his feet. He quickly locates his sword and shield.

“That was amazing!” Gweyr calls out as she slowly lowers herself back to the ground. “I've never seen anything like that.”

With all the elves on their feet once more, attention is turned to the downed dragon. Many wounds are noted on the beast. It has been in battle recently and was already wounded before engaging the elves. As the dragon is looked over, a 'sucking' sound is heard drawing everyone towards the head.

Unlike the other HIVE controlled beasts, the dragon does not appear to have anything attached to it nor is it being changed into something else. The squishing noise draws the elves towards the dragons massive head. Specifically towards its ears. There, a silver tinged head hunter can be seen crawling out of the dragons ear canal. The HIVE that was controlling the dragon was inside its head! The silver head hunter struggles to get out of the dragons ear and fly off.

“I take it back,” Gweyr gulps. “I've never seen anything like that. Nor do I wish to again!”

GM Notes:

The dragon's head was too thick for the bugs to penetrate! Lilia casts a pair of Cure Moderate Wounds on Andlin and Arlen, while Onas also cast a pair of those spells on them. Onas then cast a regular Cure Light Wounds on himself and Lia.

Hit Points:

Andlin: 68 of 80
Arlen: 66 of 76
Lia: 57 of 63
Onas: 61 of 66

Now what?

Kylie nods her acknowledgement to the swordsmen, and sees the crusader start to heal their companions. Lilia also helps with the healing. Considering how many of the others are also priests, she suspects that everyone will soon be healed up.

The dragon shows no sign of stirring, with the implication that it is truly dead. As she draws closer, Kylie and others notice movement near the creature's head. Looking closer, they see that a silvery Hive head hunter is trying to wriggle its way out of the dragon's ear. It looks very like the one they had seen in the infected Argent's hair back in Silvestra. Snarling "Not this time," Kylie drops down low and casts Burning Hands at the emerging bug. She smiles grimly as the flames shoot out from her hands and envelop the hideous insect.

Onas Brightsword:

Sore though he is, it is quickly apparent that both Arlen and Andlin are hurt worse. Onas casts healing spells on each of the warriors, as does the queen. Once that's done, Onas turns and provides some healing for Lia and himself as well. "Sorry, Lia, but I'm running out of blessings at this point, or I'd heal you some more."
Arlen wrote:“Thank you,”Arlen will offer as his appearance notably improves.
"Anytime, Arlen," Onas says to his brother. "Just glad you're okay."

With the battle over, they move to inspecting the black dragon lying before them. Onas moves around the creature, examining its various wounds and checking the thickness of its hide. He cannot help but notice the way the scales gleam in the light. "In a way, this dragon is kind of beautiful. Too bad it is so inimical to life."

Just then, he hears a gasp from some of the others. They seem to be focused on the dragon's head. Moving to where he can see better, Onas spots some kind of silvery bug trying to squeeze out of the dragon's ear. "Somebody kill that thing," he says.
Gweyr wrote:“I take it back,” Gweyr gulps. “I've never seen anything like that. Nor do I wish to again!”
Onas feels his stomach twist in revulsion. "You and me both, Gweyr. I could have gone my whole life without seeing that."

Laucian

Bow drawn, Laucian stares down the shaft of the arrow as a slight movement and squishing sucking noise is heard, Drawing his attention to it. A silver head hunter begins to squirm out of the dragon’s ear!
Just then, he hears a gasp from some of the others. They seem to be focused on the dragon's head. Moving to where he can see better, Onas spots some kind of silvery bug trying to squeeze out of the dragon's ear. "Somebody kill that thing," he says.
“Älready on it.” The ranger cleric says taking aim at the creature.
Laucian will take aim and fire an arrow to the creature. Drawing another as he releases incase it is needed again.
After the threat is eliminated he will say to the group.
"Now is not the time, but upon our return I would like to gather some teeth and perhaps a scale and claw. I wish I did the same for Ember. A token to remember if you will." he says simply.
Onas casts healing spells on each of the warriors, as does the queen. Once that's done, Onas turns and provides some healing for Lia and himself as well. "Sorry, Lia, but I'm running out of blessings at this point, or I'd heal you some more."
"I can tend to those still need healing." the Cleric ranger says evenly. "That is if they wish
it."

“I take it back,” Gweyr gulps. “I've never seen anything like that. Nor do I wish to again!”
“The day is young, Sadly, this is just the beginning of what untold horrors we may come across.”

Looking to Kylie and Lilia he will ask, "What was found ahead, In which direction do you wish to go?" he asks Lilia as he looks back to see if the dwarves and Lord Sharadin are coming."

“I’d rather not be hit by a dragon again.” She says as she stretches her sides, the pain etched on her face. “Never thought I could be hit so hard…” she says simply.

Lilia:

While hovering over the larva feeding area.
Kylie wrote:Kylie pauses a second in thought. "Do you think the dragons have been infected? I hadn't considered that; wouldn't have thought that they could punch through the dragons' heavy scales..."
“It would make sense,” Lilia offers. “After all it seemed to be coming here in response to our destroying eggs and larva. All the HIVE seems to want to do is take control of those they deem fit or feed those who do not meet their standards to their children. There does not seem to be anything else between those two extremes.”

Lilia flies back to the others after the dragon crashes out of control. She asks if everyone is okay.
Andlin wrote:“I'll live,” Andlin offers with a grimace. “But I may not enjoy it.”
Arlen wrote:“Let's never do that again,” Arlen mutters as he struggles to his feet.
“Indeed,” Lilia states. “Being run over by a dragon is a most unusual experience. Perhaps if you ask nicely Lorelei Spellsong will put your brave deeds to song. Let's get you healed up.”

Lilia casts a Cure Moderate Wounds spell on either man. Casting clerical spells seemed strange at first, but now its starting to become second nature.

The others focus on the dragon and Lia strikes it with a round of Magic Missiles. The beast seems to be dead. But much like when the HIVE was first fought far to the north, the host might be dead, but the HIVE controlling it is not! A silvery head hunter emerges from one of the dragons ears! Kylie and Laucian move to deal with the foul parasite.
Gweyr wrote:“I take it back,” Gweyr gulps. “I've never seen anything like that. Nor do I wish to again!”
Lia wrote:“Adaptive little things aren't they?” She says as she sees the thing crowing from the dragon’s ears. “I wonder what these Hive’s have learned from a dragon? Is it safe to assume that these hive might use the dragon’s tactics?” she asks looking to the older elves.
“This is why the HIVE must be stopped and here for good,” Lilia stresses. “Otherwise they will attempt to control all and use the rest for food. As for any tactics that a dragon might use, I have no way of knowing. Perhaps Silvarn or one of her companions could answer that question.”
Laucian wrote:Looking to Kylie and Lilia he will ask, "What was found ahead, In which direction do you wish to go?" he asks Lilia as he looks back to see if the dwarves and Lord Sharadin are coming.
“Death is all that lies ahead,” Lilia grimly answers. “This area is filled with eggs. Whey they hatch a larva emerges and it crawls towards those buildings in the center. We found what was left of those life signs Quirin sensed. It was other swamp creatures being eaten by these larva. Once feed, they cocooned themselves on the swamp creatures bodies. When they hatched they were a head hunter. Kylie and I destroyed much of the creatures there, but the rest need to be taken care off. There was nothing there to save. All we could do was end their torment.”

“As for what our next move is,” Lilia continues. “Destroy this area thoroughly. Let no HIVE egg survive! Undoubtedly, the HIVE will strike at us again. Stand ready. Battle will soon confront us again.”

Valena:

Valena keeps her eyes locked on the dragon sprawled before her, but listens to the conversations going on around her. Lilia and Onas help heal those who were wounded during the brief battle.
Laucian wrote:"I can tend to those still need healing." the Cleric ranger says evenly. "That is if they wish it.”
“I have healing magic available as well,” Valena notes while not taking her eyes off the dragon. Lia strikes it with a trio of Magic Missiles. Judging by its lack of reaction, it must be dead. Valena lowers her bow, but still has it at the ready.
Onas wrote:With the battle over, they move to inspecting the black dragon lying before them. Onas moves around the creature, examining its various wounds and checking the thickness of its hide. “The hide of a dragon is a prize unto itself,” Valena notes. “It can be fashioned into armor by those with such skills. It's even said to resist acid as well. Although skinning something this large would be quite a job.”

Laucian asks what we all were wondering what Lilia and Kylie found up ahead.
Lilia wrote:“Death is all that lies ahead,” Lilia grimly answers. “This area is filled with eggs. Whey they hatch a larva emerges and it crawls towards those buildings in the center. Years passed while the HIVE Queen drifted among her absorbed memories. The rest of the HIVE kept her feed and healthy and she grew larger and larger over time. Her eggs were dutifully carried to the hatchery to prepare for their hatching. One day the HIVE Queen was awakened from her slumber. The workers had found something that required her attention! It was a living Chiliz!

The HIVE Queen didn't understand how this was possible. The essence she had absorbed earlier was convinced that it was the last of its kind. Regardless, this merited investigation. The workers had unburied a building that had fallen into the mud sometime in the distance past. The passages ways were quite wide, but were to small for the grown HIVE Queen to pass through.

But there were other ways for the HIVE Queen to reach this Chiliz. The Silver Head Hunters were special from the rest of their kind. The regular Head Hunters grafted themselves unto a target and eventually turned them into a HIVE worker or soldier. The silver ones were in direct contact with the HIVE Queen herself. They were an extension of her and allowed greater control than a regular HIVE as long as they were close enough.

A Silver Head Hunter settled onto a frog-like creature that was small enough to pass through the narrow passages. The workers lead the extension of the HIVE Queen to what they had found. In a chamber deeper in this complex was where they found the Chiliz. It's appearance even startled the HIVE Queen.

The Chiliz was very big, ten feet tall and reptilian in appearance. Clearly it was a distant relative of the lizard men so common in this swamp. The creatures had several horns emerging from its head and a great bony crest emerged from its neck. It had a tail that was even longer than its body. The body was mostly green in color with yellow highlights. The Chiliz stood there, not moving and not reacting to anything around it. Was it merely a statue?

The HIVE Queen moved closer, her frog-like avatar tiny in comparison to the giant Chiliz. There was a whirring sound and the head of the Chiliz moved slightly! It seemed to be looking at the frog-like avatar. Words soundlessly appeared in the HIVE Queen's mind.

“Scanning,” the Chiliz mentally stated, its mouth not moving. “Identity confirmed. How can I assist you?”

The elves are picking themselves up after the brief battle with the black dragon. Arlen and Andlin had the dragon roll over them!
Onas wrote:"Anytime, Arlen," Onas says to his brother. "Just glad you're okay."
“Me too,” Arlen offers with a grin and a grasp of hands.
Lilia wrote:“Indeed,” Lilia states. “Being run over by a dragon is a most unusual experience. Perhaps if you ask nicely Lorelei Spellsong will put your brave deeds to song. Let's get you healed up.”
“I think not,” Andlin will say with a laugh. “That's not something I want to be immortalized over.”

Attention is turned towards the body of the Black Dragon. Lia hit it with a Magic Missile and the beast showed no effect. Instead, a sucking noise drew those close to the dragons ear. There a Silver Head Hunter was emerging! Kylie hit it with a Burning Hands spell, burning the bug to a crisp! The repulsive creature shrieks as it dies.

With that threat dealt with the elves compare notes. Lilia reveals what they found ahead. The nursery of the larva where they feed on living creatures! The Queen of the Sylvan Realm decrees that all the eggs and larva need to be destroyed!

Gweyr directs her Fire Elemental to continue its work burning the eggs of in the distance in the egg field. Some of the creatures in the nursery are still alive, but most were killed by the Fireballs cast earlier.

Not long after that, Lord Sharadin and the dwarves come running up. The two groups compare notes. Another Black Dragon buzzed them not long after the elves departed, but they were able to slay it. It seemed to have already been wounded from earlier battles. They used Gweyr's Fire Elemental as a beacon to find you.

“What goes on here?” Lord Sharadin will inquire.

After learning about the eggs and hatchery here, Lord Sharadin will cast a Fly spell on himself and help in the destruction. Captain Roma is not present and if asked, Ma Granite will say that she flew off to summon her ship.

Far off in the distance the dragon battle seems to be drawing to a close. A particular loud roar is heard and it seems that another black dragon is flying in this general direction! But it is not alone! Two other dragons are trailing after it!

GM Notes:

Much like before, you'll have several rounds to get ready for these next dragons to arrive.

Now what?

Onas Brightsword:
Laucian wrote:"Now is not the time, but upon our return I would like to gather some teeth and perhaps a scale and claw. I did the same for Ember. A token to remember if you will." he says simply.
"Hmm," Onas murmurs, hearing Laucian's tale. "Was Ember a dragon as well? You've fought a dragon before?"
Valena wrote:“The hide of a dragon is a prize unto itself,” Valena notes. “It can be fashioned into armor by those with such skills. It's even said to resist acid as well. Although skinning something this large would be quite a job.”
Valena's comment catches Onas' attention. In his mind's eye, he can just see himself in some glittering black dragon armor. Majestic and a bit fearsome, he imagines. Still, they have more important priorities right now. "As Laucian said, perhaps on our way back..."
Lia wrote:“I’d rather not be hit by a dragon again.” She says as she stretches her sides, the pain etched on her face. “Never thought I could be hit so hard…” she says simply.
Onas nods. "I'm with you, Lia. Once is one time too many, in my book."
Laucian wrote:"I can tend to those still need healing." the Cleric ranger says evenly. "That is if they wish it."
Having spent nearly all of his spells, Onas is cheered to hear that Ehlonna's servant step in to help with the healing. "I think I'm okay for the time being, Laucian. Thank you." Valena offers to add her healing magics as needed as well, for which he is grateful.
Andlin wrote:“I think not,” Andlin will say with a laugh. “That's not something I want to be immortalized over.”
Onas chuckles at Lilia's suggestion that Lorelei might make a song of this. He doesn't imagine that being rolled over by a dead dragon will make any of them seem very heroic. Andlin seems to agree, and Onas confirms the thought with a nod.
Valena wrote:“I was right,” Valena wryly notes. “I would have rather not known that.”
"Me neither," Onas states, a sour look upon his face.

Kylie creates fire from her hands and roasts the silvery Hive bug as it emerges from the dragon's ear. "Well done, Lady Kylie," he says smiling at the Chosen half-elf. At Lilia's urging, Onas moves to a place where he has a better view to watch for other threats. He readies his bow, hoping that they will spot any danger before it is upon them.

As they wait, Lord Sharadin and the elite dwarven squad arrive. It seems they fought one of the dragons as well. "Was anyone injured?" Onas asks. Ma Granite relates that Captain Roma is off summoning her ship. That should result in some amazing fireworks!

Another roar is heard. Off in the distance, they can see one of the other black dragons flying toward them. It is being chased by two other dragons, but it is not clear whether they are Silvarn and her friends or other blacks. Onas advances in their direction, bow at the ready. As he moves, he looks for trees or other obstacles which might protect him from another dying dragon. He doesn't want to experience a repeat of that! Once the lead dragon is in range, he will begin firing.

Kylie Lanthorn the Half-Elven:
Lilia wrote:“It would make sense,” Lilia offers. “After all it seemed to be coming here in response to our destroying eggs and larva. All the HIVE seems to want to do is take control of those they deem fit or feed those who do not meet their standards to their children. There does not seem to be anything else between those two extremes.”
"That is true," Kylie replies, a grim look on her face. "Perhaps we will learn something of how they manage to infect something so powerful."

Healing is provided, leaving the elves in much better shape than they were a few minutes ago. With so many in the group capable of wielding divine blessings, healing is quite available.

One of the silvery Hive headhunters, like the one that had been seen in the infected Argent's hair, tries to climb out of the dragon's ear. Rubbing her hands together briskly and chanting the mystic incantation, Kylie fills the entire area around the dragon's ear with her summoned flame. The bug dies quickly with an audible hissing and popping sound. Meanwhile, Gweyr's summoned elemental continues to march about the area, destroying swathes of eggs and larva as it passes.
Lia wrote:“Adaptive little things aint they.” She says as she sees the thing crowing from the dragon’s ears. “I wonder what these Hive’s have learned from a dragon? Is it safe to assume that these hive might use the dragon’s tactics?” she asks looking to the older elves.
"That's an interesting point, Lia," Kylie adds. "If the Hive learn all that is known by their victims and add it to their shared knowledge, that knowledge could be vast indeed. Their actions are clearly not limited by any sort of ethical considerations - at least not any that we would recognize as such - which makes them a truly dire threat to everyone."
Lilia wrote:“As for what our next move is,” Lilia continues. “Destroy this area thoroughly. Let no HIVE egg survive! Undoubtedly, the HIVE will strike at us again. Stand ready. Battle will soon confront us again.”
"As you say, Lilia." Kylie flies back and forth over the area, looking for any eggs or larva that the elemental missed. Any she finds quickly get stabbed with her shortsword.

It is not long before the boisterous cacophony of the arriving dwarves is heard. Sharadin is also with them, though Captain Roma is not. Returning to the group, she hears that they killed another of the black dragons. "That's two down of the five. I hope Silvarn and her friends are having success with the others."

The words are barely out of her mouth when another of the black dragons is spotting winging in their direction, followed by two other unidentified dragons. Responding to this new threat, she flies in an arc mostly upwards and then tending in the direction of the dragons. As she flies, she mentally reviews her remaining spells. If she can get above the lead dragon, Lance of Disruption may force it toward the ground and her waiting comrades. Ice Storm and Sunfire both have greater range; she might be able to catch all three dragons with the Ice Storm, if the other two are unfriendly. She tries to gauge how far behind they are and whether they are friend or foe. She will retain her Cone of Cold until they get into closer range.

_________________________________________________________________________
If only the lead dragon is black, Kylie will focus on shooting it with her bow while trying to maneuver above it for a Lance of Disruption. If the others are black as well, she will try to gauge the possibility of catching more than one with her Ice Storm. If they're too far apart for that, she'll focus on the lead dragon as above. Either way, she'll fly about and dodge their attacks as best she can.

Laucian
“Death is all that lies ahead,” Lilia grimly answers. “This area is filled with eggs. Whey they hatch a larva emerges and it crawls towards those buildings in the center. We found what was left of those life signs Quirin sensed. It was other swamp creatures being eaten by these larva. Once feed, they cocooned themselves on the swamp creatures bodies. When they hatched they were a head hunter. Kylie and I destroyed much of the creatures there, but the rest need to be taken care off. There was nothing there to save. All we could do was end their torment.”
“This whole swamp reeks of death and despair .”he says simply. Laucian remains silent for a moment. His eyes on the prone dragon, he watches as Kylies moves forward and ignites her hands causing fire to erupt forth, bathing the insect creature in flames, it dies with a hiss and pop.

As for what our next move is,” Lilia continues. “Destroy this area thoroughly. Let no HIVE egg survive! Undoubtedly, the HIVE will strike at us again. Stand ready. Battle will soon confront us again.”
Laucian can’t help but pause as he looks to his queen. He knows full well that this evil needs to be removed and killed, their eggs cracked so that they no longer breed. But a part of him cannot help but look to Lilia for a moment. She is beginning to sound like another not to long ago. Shaking such thoughts from his head.
He lessens the pull of his bow as he removes the arrow from his bow and returns it to his quiver.
“Did anything come from the beast’s ears, nose eyes?”he asks curiously hearing they to took out a black dragon,
“We have come upon a breeding ground it seems. There are many eggs of the Hive about. The others have begun to kill the eggs before they can hatch. Anything that the hive deemed unfit seems to be wounded and left for food for the egg larva to feed upon.”
With Onas----
"Hmm," Onas murmurs, hearing Laucian's tale. "Was Ember a dragon as well? You've fought a dragon before?"
“It is not something to brag about.” He says simply, “Ember was indeed a dragon. A vicious evil Red Dragon commanding many humanoids. If it were up to him he would see all are kind dead or enslaved to his will.”
Having spent nearly all of his spells, Onas is cheered to hear that Ehlonna's servant step in to help with the healing. "I think I'm okay for the time being, Laucian. Thank you." Valena offers to add her healing magics as needed as well, for which he is grateful.
Laucian merely nods in return.

Laucian will take up position as before, he will find what cover her can and await the coming dragons. He will mind full of what color they are as they come within eyesight. He will put an arrow into any unfriendly dragon that enters his sight.
Til Ehlonna's will be done

Lilia:

Lilia wonders if Lorelei Spellsong would like to make a song of the brief battle with the black dragon that nearly crushed several elves.
Andlin wrote:“I think not,” Andlin will say with a laugh. “That's not something I want to be immortalized over.”
“Suit yourself,” Lilia says with a grin.
Lilia wrote:“This whole swamp reeks of death and despair,” he says simply.
“That it does,” Lilia agrees. “This is no place for an elf.”

A silver head hunter emerges from the black dragon and Kylie removes it with magical fire.

“That seems to answer that question,” Lilia notes.

Not long after that, Lord Sharadin comes up with the dwarves. The Alphatian Captain is not among them. They had their own black dragon to fight.
Laucian wrote:“Did anything come from the beast’s ears, nose eyes?” he asks curiously hearing they to took out a black dragon.

“We have come upon a breeding ground it seems. There are many eggs of the Hive about. The others have begun to kill the eggs before they can hatch. Anything that the hive deemed unfit seems to be wounded and left for food for the egg larva to feed upon.”
“We found the HIVE hatchery,” Lilia reports adding to what Laucian stated. “We've been destroying their eggs and larva. That's what brought this dragon to us. Fortunately it was already wounded from battle and feel quickly.
Kylie wrote:It is not long before the boisterous cacophony of the arriving dwarves is heard. Sharadin is also with them, though Captain Roma is not. “Agreed,” Lilia adds. “I would think that our draconic allies are superior to their swampy cousins in battle.”

With a lull in the action, we turn our focus back to the destruction of the eggs and larva. Lilia will draw her Manabow and use it to remove the larva and hatchlings inside the buildings. Since the bow does generates its own arrows, the Elf Maiden is not worried about running out of ammunition.

When the roar of the new dragon is heard, Lilia flies back to the others. There are no new tactics to add as we just went through this minutes ago. “By the grace of the All-Father, may this foe fall as easily as the last!”
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Onas wrote:Valena's comment catches Onas' attention. In his mind's eye, he can just see himself in some glittering black dragon armor. Majestic and a bit fearsome, he imagines. Still, they have more important priorities right now. "As Laucian said, perhaps on our way back..."
“As I understand it, dragon skin is immune to their breath attacks, so the hide of a black dragon resists acid,” Valena adds. “A red would resist fire and so on. And according to some dwarves that I've known, dragon steaks are the best eating.”

Not long after the battle with the black dragon, Lord Sharadin and our dwarven allies come rushing up. Valena does not mind dwarves having spent time working with Aria in the Corunglain area before the mission to save the Mother Tree came up. They are solid, reliable allies.

Valena steps away from the others and keeps watch for any new trouble. It comes flying towards us once more!

“Another dragon!” Valena calls out. “Looks like two others following it. We have incoming!”

Safely away from the others, Valena rises her already prepared arrow and takes aim. Once in range she will fire her first arrow.

“Lady of the Forests, guide my aim.”

“This is why the HIVE must be stopped and here for good,” Lilia stresses. “Otherwise they will attempt to control all and use the rest for food. As for any tactics that a dragon might use, I have no way of knowing. Perhaps Silvarn or one of her companions could answer that question.”
“We will see to it.” She says quietly back.
“I don't have any magic potent enough to damage this area,” Valena notes. “I'll keep watch instead.”
“I can only do so much with my magics. And If it comes close maybe strike at it with my sword.”
Lia takes up position near some cover and awaits the coming dragons. She will wait and see what the three dragons are before determining what she will do.

December 7th, CR 571 or Deepnight 29th, 20,519 AP

The HIVE Queen was stunned when the large reptilian looking thing spoke mentally to her. It took several seconds before she could answer what the thing had asked her.

“What are you?” was the HIVE Queen's first thought.

“I am Lore Keeper Ironaya, an artificially constructed user interface,” the construct telepathically answer.

The HIVE Queen really didn't understand what that meant. Lore was usually related to knowledge so perhaps it was the Chiliz version of a library?

“What can you tell me?” the HIVE Queen wondered.

“What do you wish to know?” Lore Keeper Ironaya countered.

“What is this place?” the HIVE Queen asked after a moments thought.

“This city has the designation Shelvestra,” came the answer.

“Tell me about the history of Shelvestra,” the HIVE Queen quickly asked, getting the hang of how this construct worked.

“Shelvestra was built 197 million solar cycles ago,” Lore Keeper Ironaya stated. “It was one of six such cities built on this planet during that time frame. Shelvestra was dedicated to weapons research and development. The native population ceased to exist 65 million solar cycles ago.”

What the construct said struck a cord in the HIVE Queen. The essence that she had absorbed was of this place. That being lived and worked here and made weapons. Visions flooded the mind of the HIVE Queen. She saw what this last Chiliz had seen and done. She needed to know more.

The Chiliz was under attack from an enemy composed of darkness. It came from the center of all that was. It covered Chiliz in blackness and took their will away from them. Those who were taken served the darkness and were now the enemies of the Chiliz. This desperate struggle lead the creation of many weapons including an ultimate weapon. One that would destroy the enemy once and for all.

“Tell me about this enemy,” the HIVE Queen asked.

Lord Sharadin and the dwarves have caught up to the elves. They also encountered a black dragon, but it too was easily defeated and showed signs of previous battle.
Onas wrote:As they wait, Lord Sharadin and the elite dwarven squad arrive. It seems they fought one of the dragons as well. "Was anyone injured?" Onas asks. Ma Granite relates that Captain Roma is off summoning her ship. That should result in some amazing fireworks!
“Nothin' serious,” Ma Granite casually answers. “Me boys are as tough as stone!”
Laucian wrote:“Did anything come from the beast’s ears, nose eyes?” he asks curiously hearing they to took out a black dragon.
“Something did try to fly away from the dragons body,” Lord Sharadin reports.

“Creepy bugger!” one of the Goblin Kickers calls out.

“Yeah, Krick just about wet himself!” yet another dwarf shouts.

“Did not!”, an agitated voice, Krick presumably, retorts.

“It tried to fly off, but we stopped it,” Lord Sharadin concludes. “I can only assume that it was HIVE and that it was controlling the black dragon.”
Laucian wrote:“We have come upon a breeding ground it seems. There are many eggs of the Hive about. The others have begun to kill the eggs before they can hatch. Anything that the hive deemed unfit seems to be wounded and left for food for the egg larva to feed upon.”
Lilia wrote:“We found the HIVE hatchery,” Lilia reports adding to what Laucian stated. “We've been destroying their eggs and larva. That's what brought this dragon to us. Fortunately it was already wounded from battle and fell quickly.”
“A grim fate for those deemed unfit,” Lord Sharadin states solemnly. “Yes, these eggs must be destroyed. No quarter can be given against this enemy.”

The group continues the grim task of breaking the HIVE eggs and slaying the larva in the area. In time, another loud dragon roar is heard and another of the beasts is seen approaching!
Valena wrote:“Another dragon!” Valena calls out. “Looks like two others following it. We have incoming!”
The attack force braces itself for the incoming attack. Gweyr returns her focus to her Projected Image off in the distance. Being much closer to the new arrivals, the fire mage is the first to get a good look at the incoming dragons.

“A gigantic black dragon is in the lead!” Gweyr reports. “Behind it are our friends; Silvarn and Saryn!”

Gweyr once more casts her enhanced Fireball, but much like the first black dragon, the beasts innate magic resistance keeps it from harm.

The black dragon streaks towards the group and now you can see it fully. It makes the first dragon look small! That dragon was around 115' long from nose to tail tip. This one is a staggering 190' long!

The dwarves and the armored elves spread out to limit the effectiveness of the dragons acid attack. They hit their shields with their weapons, attempting to draw the beast to them.

Arrows are fired at the approaching dragon. This bigger dragon has thicker scales and most of the missiles simply bounce off. Kyle and Valena manage to stick one arrow each, while Laucian embeds a pair into the dragons hide. The missiles launched from Onas and Lilia have no effect.

The dragon streaks towards the group at full speed. It lowers itself closer to the ground, but does not appear to be trying to land. Gweyr, seeing the dragon rapidly approaching flies off to one side, forgoing the spell she had intended to cast in favor of her own personal safety.

Those defenders on the land move closer in an attempt to strike the passing dragon. Lia gets close enough, but the beasts scales turns aside her blade.

Cries of alarm ring as the dragon grabs two of those on the ground and carries them off in its claws! The dragon is now moving away from the group at full speed with two unwilling passengers!

GM Notes:

Apologizes for the delays. Just been busy with work and play.

Its not immediately clear just who was carried off by the dragon! Other than Gweyr's Fireball, all the action in the post took place in the same round. The dragon basically charged and did a snatch and grab and is now flying off with its prizes.

Silvarn and Saryn will arrive shortly.

Now what?

Onas Brightsword:
Valena wrote:“As I understand it, dragon skin is immune to their breath attacks, so the hide of a black dragon resists acid,” Valena adds. “A red would resist fire and so on. And according to some dwarves that I've known, dragon steaks are the best eating.”
The Silver Maiden's comment surprised the crusader. "Eating? Dragons?" Onas stumbles over his thoughts and words for a moment. "That is... Perhaps I will ask one of them about it later..."

Laucian verbalizes the sense of death and despair that they all feel in this horrific place. Onas can only nod as Lilia agrees. As an elf, he is attuned to the sense of life and hope that natural places exude, but this place feels barren and dead. Inwardly, he shrinks back from that ugliness, trying not to let it overwhelm his spirit.

With the arrival of Sharadin and the elite dwarves, stories are shared of their separate battles with the black dragons they encountered. Both had been inhabited by flying Hive bugs, and both bugs were slain. Onas sighs in relief for that small victory. Two less Hive to enslave others.

Lilia describes the foul hatchery in which they find themselves. Onas sees the looks of disgust and horror on the faces of those newly arrived. "Gweyr's elemental and the others are making good progress in cleansing the area. I hope there are not more such places down here."
Laucian wrote:“It is not something to brag about.” He says simply, “Ember was indeed a dragon. A vicious evil Red Dragon commanding many humanoids. If it were up to him he would see all are kind dead or enslaved to his will.”
"A red dragon..." Onas trails off. "I have heard terrible stories of such beasts. I am glad you survived your encounter."

Gweyr announces that the following dragons are their friends, Silvarn and Saryn. A smile appears on Onas' face at the good news; at least they won't have to fight three more dragons!

The black dragon races in at astounding speed. Onas is only able to get off two shots between the time it comes within range and when it snatches up a pair of their companions! One sticks in the beast's leathery hide, but the other bounces off. From what he can see, others are having no better luck.

Onas races after the fleeing dragon, firing as he goes. He has to be careful not to hit those that it snatched up, so he aims for the head and upper body. Who did it take? He tries to get a look as he goes, but the dragon is moving fast and its huge claws cover most of their bodies.

Kylie Lanthorn the Half-Elven:
Lilia wrote:A silver head hunter emerges from the black dragon and Kylie removes it with magical fire.
“That seems to answer that question,” Lilia notes.
Kylie nods to the queen. "It does indeed, and I am not happy about it. We must assume that any other being or creature we encounter down here is similarly infected."
Lilia wrote:“Agreed,” Lilia adds. “I would think that our draconic allies are superior to their swampy cousins in battle.”
"I hope for their sake you are right," Kylie replies with a grimace. While she hasn't know Silvarn and her companions long, she would hate to see anything happen to them.
Sharadin wrote:“It tried to fly off, but we stopped it,” Lord Sharadin concludes. “I can only assume that it was HIVE and that it was controlling the black dragon.”

At Laucian's prompting, the archmage confirms that a Hive head-hunter also emerged from the other black dragon. "I'm glad to hear that it was destroyed," Kylie says. "That will prevent it from enslaving another host."

Valena calls out a warning of more approaching dragons, and Gweyr confirms that those following the first are Silvarn and Saryn. "Thank the gods we don't have to fight three more dragons," she states to no one in particular as she soars up into the air.

As it approaches, the black dragon proves to be enormous! The last one was huge, but this one is much larger still. Kylie is stunned momentarily by the creature's sheer size. Worse, it proves to be as fast as it is gigantic. Though it flies by below her as she had hoped, Kylie quickly realizes that she won't be able to get her spell off in time so she relies on her bow. However, neither of her enchanted arrows manage to pierce its scaly armor.

The dragon flashes past the group on the ground, and Kylie takes off after the dragon, pushing for the best speed she can manage. They are in an underground cave, she reasons, so it will eventually reach a wall and have to slow or turn. Maybe that will give her a chance to catch up and cast one of her spells.

With Lord Sharadin
“It tried to fly off, but we stopped it,” Lord Sharadin concludes. “I can only assume that it was HIVE and that it was controlling the black dragon.”
“Your deductions are correct. I am glad to see you and the others fared well against the dragon.
Onas-
"A red dragon..." Onas trails off. "I have heard terrible stories of such beasts. I am glad you survived your encounter."
“Sadly, the stories are true. It was Ehlonna’s will. That and the will and strength of my companions.” He says simply.
“A gigantic black dragon is in the lead!” Gweyr reports. “Behind it are our friends; Silvarn and Saryn!”
“When did this become a race? Be mindful that Silvarn and Saryn may not be on our side!” he says as he takes an arrow and knocks it. He moves to come cover and waits patiently as the huge dragon comes into range.

The black dragon streaks towards the group and now you can see it fully. It makes the first dragon look small! That dragon was around 115' long from nose to tail tip. This one is a staggering 190' long!
“You are a big one. Easier to hit.” He says as he draws back his bow and fires, repeating the action as the first arrow penetrates it’s armor. The second arrow finds it’s mark as the dragon flies closer.
Cries of alarm ring out as the dragon snatches up two of their number and carries them off!
“Sound off, who are we missing?!”
Seeing Kylie and Onas move after the dragon, Laucian draws his paralyzing arrow from his quiver.
Quickly knocking it, Laucian takes aim as he calculates his best range( speed of an arrow vs the speed of the dragon. If he thinks he is able to take the shot, he will shoot a paralyzing arrow.
“Steady my aim and guide my hand, Ehlonna.” Taking a breath and adjusting his aim,If he thinks he is able to take the shot, he will shoot a paralyzing arrow. (I know Laucian’s range is 315 with his long bow. Not sure how far away the dragon is at the end of the round vs Laucian’s turn. If the dragon is within range he will go for the shot. If not, he wont fire.)
Til Ehlonna's will be done

“Creepy bugger!” one of the Goblin Kickers calls out.

“Yeah, Krick just about wet himself!” yet another dwarf shouts.

“Did not!”, an agitated voice, Krick presumably, retorts.
“I almost did.” She retorts back. “In the face of that,”pointing to the dragon corpse, “ I think it would be accepted.” She says with a half smile.
“A gigantic black dragon is in the lead!” Gweyr reports. “Behind it are our friends; Silvarn and Saryn!”
“Gigantic? How big is Gigantic?”She asks rhetorically.
A few moments later a fireball lights up the dark and Lia’s mouth drops and goes dry as the 190 ft Black dragon bares down on them As it flies closely, Lia tries to move in with her sword. Sadly, it’s armoured hide turns her sword away, vibrating slightly in her hands from the strike.

Cries of alarm ring as the dragon grabs two of those on the ground and carries them off in its claws! The dragon is now moving away from the group at full speed with two unwilling passengers!

She hears, Laucian’s call to speak out. “I’m here!”answering the ranger as she sees Kylie and Onas move off toward the dragon. Lia will quickly look about to see who is missing, silently hoping it wasn’t Lilia.
Lia will call upon her heritage and cast Dancing lights at Max range in the direction that the Dragon is flying. One to give the archers and spell casters a greater chance of sighting the creature as well as to see who this dragon is carrying. Make them look like Wisps.

Lilia:
Kylie wrote:Kylie nods to the queen. "It does indeed, and I am not happy about it. We must assume that any other being or creature we encounter down here is similarly infected."
“A logical precaution,” Lilia will agree.

Lord Sharadin and the dwarves arrive and tell the tale of their encounter with a different black dragon. Laucian wonders if it too was controlled by the HIVE.
Lord Sharadin wrote:“It tried to fly off, but we stopped it,” Lord Sharadin concludes. “I can only assume that it was HIVE and that it was controlling the black dragon.”
“That seems to be the case, Lord Sharadin,” Lilia states. “They control what is useful and consume those they deem to not be useful.”
Lord Sharadin wrote:“A grim fate for those deemed unfit,” Lord Sharadin states solemnly. “Yes, these eggs must be destroyed. No quarter can be given against this enemy.”
“It cannot,” Lilia adds in an equally grim voice.

Valena reports that another black dragon is inbound. Gweyr then alerts us that it is gigantic in size and that Silvarn and Saryn are in pursuit of it. Perhaps the last two of the five black dragons were already dealt with. This new arrival is gigantic! Perhaps it is the senior of the hatch of dragons.

Since her Manabow is already in her hands, Lilia is content to fly arrows at the new arrival, but the beasts scales are as hard as steel and they just bounce off. The dragon streaks in, seemingly grabs two of our numbers on the ground and continues onward!
Laucian wrote:“Sound off, who are we missing?!”
“Present,” Lilia calls out in response to the query.

Her eyes remained locked on the fast moving dragon. She recalls griffons using a similar maneuver during the battles against the orc hordes in the Sylvan Realms. They would pick up unsuspecting foes, fly them higher into the sky and then drop them!

“Kylie! With me!” Lilia calls out. “If that dragon drops our allies from a great height they could be killed!”

Lilia stores her bow and flies after the dragon in hopes of catching anyone it drops.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

“Which one,” Valena says with a laugh. “The dwarves or the dragons? I bet they would give you different answers.”

A new source of danger arrives in the form of yet another black dragon, being chased by a silver and a gold one!
Laucian wrote:“When did this become a race? Be mindful that Silvarn and Saryn may not be on our side!” he says as he takes an arrow and knocks it. He moves to come cover and waits patiently as the huge dragon comes into range.
“Don't say things like that!” Valena complains. “Don't jinx us!”

The lead dragon is an ancient black dragon is seeming as big as a city block! Its hide is thick and most missiles just bounce off of it. The dragon picks up two beings and flies off with them.
Laucian wrote:“Sound off, who are we missing?!”
“I am unharmed,” Valena calls out. “It think it took two of the warriors! I couldn't tell if they were elf or dwarf.”

Valena draws another arrow and takes aim. Perhaps this time her shaft will find a weak spot...
