The still unnamed band of adventurers (SUBOA for short) questions the Charmed bandit leaders. The men will add additional places to their crude map. The town has one combination inn/tavern, so they would guess that Artur and Arkane would have rooms there if they are still in town.
They would also guess that there's around twenty guards and workers under Lothar's employ in town. There are several regular homes that they use as bunkhouses. Some also stay at the warehouse as permanent guards.
Lothar's home is close to the river and he keeps a small boat near the shore. The only other significant road out of town, apart from the one you'd be coming in on leads down river towards the town of Hendry. The flow of the waterway is towards Hendry so river travel is the fastest way to leave Twin Forks.
Twin Forks itself is a sleepy little village out in the middle of nowhere. It's far enough south to have little to fear from humanoid raids. Timber is the largest export from the village. The logs are cut down and trimmed in a local sawmill before being shipped down river and sent on to Athenos. Athenos is a large city on the shores of the Southern Sea and has a thriving ocean port. Shipbuilding is big business down in Athenos.
The majority of the citizens of Twin Forks are farmers. There are the usual support businesses such as blacksmiths and merchants dealing in everyday goods.
The bandits had a total of twelve horses among them. Of the twelve, only four are in what would be considered good condition. The others are either thin and sickly, or old and over-worked.
After the questioning is complete, everyone turns in. Guards are posted due to the Charmed bandits' presence, but the night passes without incident.
Next morning, the Adventurers are up and ready to release the bandits. Before exiting the magic cabin, Sherwood warns that no one must interfere with what he is attempting to do. In spite of what they may see or hear, things are not as they appear.
Once outside and everyone with weapons ready, Sherwood Dispels the Wall of Stone. It vanishes upon the completion of his spell. Warily, the bandits come forth from of the cave.
Ivy casts her Know Alignment spell. Much to her dismay, she only finds two men who don't show the taint of evil to them. The Priestess points them out and they are separated from the others.
Sherwood speaks to the rest of the men. "Gentlemen, this is where we part company. Please remain still and you may survive the spell I am about to cast."
Sherwood begins to cast his spell. As he works his magic, a large fiery dog erupts into existence above the heads of the startled and terrified men. The dog howls an unearthly growl as it snarls and trots over the bandits. The fiery canine snorts and as it does small spit-like globules of fire fly forth striking each of the bandits in the forehead. A sizzling sound is heard and many of the bandits react as if the flames burned them. The fire fades after a few seconds, as does the pain.
"What you are seeing there is the great hunting mastiff Diabolicus, a devil dog from the lower realms! You've each been marked by the devil dog. Unless you follow my instructions exactly to the letter, Diabolicus will hunt you down to the very ends of the earth and… Well, I'm sure you get the idea. Diabolicus does not tire nor does he sleep and his fondness for living flesh is the stuff of legends. Only weapons of the highest enchantment have a hope of harming him."
Diabolicus trots over to Sherwood's side. He stoops down to pet the fiery dog on the top of its head. Drool drops from the mastiff's mouth and seemingly burns into the ground.
"So, the choice is yours. Obey my instructions and you will never see Diabolicus again. You are to pick up your armor and take a sword or dagger for your own protection. You will then travel on foot directly to the city of Pyris and turn yourself in to the city guard. Lord Validar here was kind enough to provide a letter of introduction for you. Otherwise you're puppy chow."
The terrified bandits exchange confused and wary looks with each other.
"Well? What are you waiting for? Get a move on!"
At that command, the bandits spring into action. They quickly grab their weapons and armor and make a run for it. The scene is rather comical as several try to run and put their armor on at the same time, usually falling in the process.
"Don't forget to take food and drink with you. It'll take you almost four days to reach Pyris on foot. I can hold Diabolicus back for about five days, but after that even I can't control his ravenous hunger! So I would suggest that you make excellent time!"
In less than five minutes, the bandits are gone having run away on the trail back to Pyris. Once the last bandit is long out of sight, Sherwood will break out in laughter no longer being able to control himself. Diabolicus will puff out of existence.
"No need to look at me as if I'm crazed, my friends," Sherwood will finally say. "What you saw was only an illusion and not real. But they don't know that and with my reputation as a wizard firmly established in their minds, I have no doubt that they will break the speed record for traveling to Pyris on foot. Come, let us break camp and take to the road once more."

GM Notes:
The next day of travel passes without incident. Sherwood will place you about 3-4 hours ride away from Twin Forks by this point. I'll need updated spell lists by the end of this post; otherwise I'll go with the last list supplied to me.
The two bandits Ivy indicated, names Po & Saladin, are both Neutral in their alignment. Not surprisingly, they are both among the newest of recruits into Lothar's employ. They don't have any information to add beyond what you already know.
Neither man is anything special to look at. Saladin is tall and lean, while Po is shorter and muscular in appearance.
Let's see if we can get our strategy for confronting Lothar and his goons ironed out this post.
Now what?

Kylie:
Kylie fidgets with the edge of her sleeve as Chareos puts forth his theories. "Hmm... It still seems like there's a logical gap. A mage choosing to learn less in one area to learn more in another is very different from not being capable of learning certain sets of spells at all. If the magics are intrisically incompatible, they would be so regardless of the mage's mindset.
"I think I'm going to have to ask Sherwood about this point. Thank you both for your ideas; clearly there is much yet for all of us to learn."
=====
Later, Validar begins a discussion of tactics for their assault on Lothar and his cronies. It's not terribly interesting, but the mention of scouting the area causes her to perk up. "Why certainly, Validar. That sounds to be right up my alley." And who knows what I might 'find' along the way... she thinks to herself. "Nighttime sounds fine to me; shouldn't inhibit my skills significantly."
She pauses a moment to consider. "My biggest concerns are the mage and warrior. It seems to me that we might want to have specific plans for those two."
=====
Kylie volunteers to take a shift watching the bandit captains, since she requires little sleep anyway, preferably during the latter part of the night. During that time, she excitedly reviews the new spells in her spellbook, and memorises the new spells she wants.
Once all have risen, she watches Sherwood's performance with interest. Almost immediately after the hellhound appears, she suspects that it is but an illusion. Still, it is an excellent illusion and seems to fulfill it's purpose admirably. Kylie is forced to turn away to hide her amusement as the bandits become frightened and begin scrambling to get away. By time they are out of earshot, her control collapses, and Kylie nearly busts a gut laughing along with Sherwood.
As the laughter dies down, Kylie returns into the magical cottage to retrieve her mount and gear. Saddling up, she is soon ready for the long ride ahead.

Making Plans
Grondar:
Grondar overhears some of the conversation between Ivy and Validar, but chooses to stay out of it. From his experience, it is unlikely that two such disparate viewpoints will find a common ground any time soon.
Eventually, the topic of strategy is brought forth, and Grondar listens closely. Validar's suggestions, combined with the latest information from the captives, start to evolve in his mind. After some moments of further thought, the dwarf speaks up.
"Sounds like the beginnings of a good plan, Validar. Mind if I attempt to add some meat to those bones?
"I think you're right that the first step should be some scouting by those best equipped to do so: Laucian, Sherra and Kylie, I suspect. Once they report back, split into three groups. The scouting group from earlier would be responsible for making their way to Lothar's home and cutting off his escape via the boat. Once the attack begins in earnest, it would be their job to capture him.
"While the scouts are working their way to Lothar's home, a second small group - perhaps Ivy or Corley, and Lilia - would use that time to circle the town. They would set up on the road on the other side, with the job of preventing escape in that direction.
"Now that I think of it, this group could also be composed of Sherwood, or one of the others, and the two remaining bandits." He points to the two Ivy separated from the rest, Po and Saladin. "This might give them a chance to demonstrate their willingness to turn over a new leaf.
"Finally, the main group would enter the town, following our new friends," Grondar gestures to the charmed lieutenants. "They would pose as what was left of that group after defeating a squad of adventurers on the trail of Lothar. They would try to get as close to the inn as possible before being discovered as imposters. Their job would be to take Artur and Arkane as quickly as possible, then mop up the rest of the bandits.
"As for me, it would take me too long to circle the town, and I'm no good at sneaking. Thus, I should be with the main group.
"Nighttime might be the best time for the scouting mission. Then make our attack early in the morning, before everyone is awake.
"What do you think?"
=====
Grondar does his best to get a good night's sleep. As usual, he spend time in his devotions both before and after bed. In the morning, he commits those spells to memory that he had used the previous day.
The dwarf watches stoically as Sherwood puts the fear of his demondog into the bandits. After the bandits flee, he strides forward and claps Sherwood on the back. "Well done, friend mage. It looks to have been a most successful ruse."
Mounting his pony, Grondar joins the group in travelling toward Twin Forks. By the end of the day, he is sore once again, but there are definite signs that his riding skills are improving. He's more than happy to spend another comfortable night in Sherwood's magical inn.

planning and bandits...
Sherra:
Listening to the beginning of the plans, Sherra agrees with everything being put forth so far, "I agree since we have the time that at least one good night recon be done."
As more details are being added both to our rough map as well as additional numbers of potential adversaries, Sherra will add in, "We will need to make sure to cover a possible river getaway. I'm pretty certain I can rig his boat to not perform the way Lothar would hope in an escape sitaution," she smiles. "I would have to do it in a way that made him think that he could still use it so as not to draw suspicion to our ploy, maybe rig it so that once weight of a significant amount is in the boat, like a fleeing Lothar for example, it will start taking on water at a rapid pace." Sherra will shrug because until she sees the boat she won't know the best ways to sabotage it.
The following morning Sherra will be quite impressed at not only the vividly real illusion Sherwood cast but in his flawless delivery of the ultimatium. Even with a good spell if Sherwood did not do a convincing enough job with the details then some of the bandits might not have bought it, and even the slightest doubt may have ruined the whole effect.
Sherra will keep an eye out on the road once we begin riding once more. She is figuring we are taking the extra horses that are worth having as well as loading them up with some of the extra supplies like the arrows and anything else useful. Sherra will also keep an eye on our two new "guests" as they are probably on horseback as well to keep up. She will watch them to see if they try signalling to each other or anything else equally foolish.

VALIDAR -
Eventually, the topic of strategy is brought forth, and Grondar listens closely. Validar's suggestions, combined with the latest information from the captives, start to evolve in his mind. After some moments of further thought, the dwarf speaks up.
"Sounds like the beginnings of a good plan, Validar. Mind if I attempt to add some meat to those bones?
Validar listens to Grondar tactical suggestions, pleased that someone else spoke up with suggestions. He would have been happy to organize the whole activity, but as with the Seekers, each individual brings a unique objective viewpoint and talents to the process.
"I think the idea of the group on the road being a bit larger with Sherwood, Ivy, Lilia and two of our new associates, one lieutenant and one of the 'recruits'. My feeling is that Corley would be of much more use to us in the main group, especially if there is a combat with Lothar's friends, Arthur and Arkane. "
"That would make the main group Grondar, Corley, Chareos, the other lieutenant and one of the new henchmen and myself. Perhaps both of the lieutenants could be in this group. I believe we have the striking power to take this group. Perhaps one or two of the scouting party could be ready with some fire support if the battle were to spill into the streets."
"I am certain that the scouting should take place at night and placing the attack early in the morning is a fine idea as long as we can avoid most of the town's inhabitants."
Sherra - As more details are being added both to our rough map as well as additional numbers of potential adversaries, Sherra will add in, "We will need to make sure to cover a possible river getaway. I'm pretty certain I can rig his boat to not perform the way Lothar would hope in an escape sitaution," she smiles. Sherra will shrug because until she sees the boat she won't know the best ways to sabotage it.
"That suggestion would certainly have a surprise factor to the result, Sherra, but if he were to have any other form of magic that involved water, Lothar still might be able to slip from our clutches. Perhaps you could stow away on the boat and as the attacks commence, you could move it down river a bit. Perhaps enough to still strike him with your bow when he reaches the mouring. Then we have mobility on the water if necessary, a chance to take him at the escape point, and we eliminate this escape avenue. You would not be out of the action, would have some moblity and could still join in to the activity in and around Lothar's lair. What do you think?"
As for Sherwood's performance, Validar takes the arch-mage's word at the beginning. He stands nearby stoically and looks menacing upon his warhorse, helm closed and lance jutting into the sky.
As the bandits run off, Validars only thought is of the probable look on the face of the light cavalry squadron commander who finds these thugs as they approach the gates of Pyris city. Validar is simply happy to be done with this nuisance.
As the group prepares for leaving the campsite the next morning, Validar and Corley are readying their horses and their armor, Corley starts some small talk about Elcadan and his conversation with Ivy. Lord Corley is genuinely surprised and dismayed about the revelations Ivy made to him last night.
"Corley, you spent most of your time in our Barony or in the West. Elcadan has been a constant thorn in our side, and more as it is larger and has more influence in some areas with other landed lords in the kingdom, especially those far from our lands. The bandit activity is sponsored and condoned by the rulers of Elcadan and their merchant houses. I am sure that there is much chance to right wongs in those lands."
Validar moves closer and speaks somewhat softer, not caring if he is overheard, but not openly advertising his statement. "If you are truly interested in assisting the people of that realm and others like Stone Ridge, then fight at my side. There are many changes coming to our lands, this I swear. There will be much battle and glory and honor and it will test the mettle of every heart that joins this cause." Validar will extend his hand toward his friend and await his response.

Conquer or Die!
boats and such...
Sherra:
"I'm not worried about being in the center of the action Validar. This part of the strategy is very important and I believe I am one of, if not the only one among us who can execute it. It's not the same size of ship I'm used to handling, but I can make it work. If my actions cause Lothar to be captured then that is action enough," she smiles easily.
"I will also have my bow and trained eye should it be needed as well and with enough arrow fire coming from the water it could be mistaken as a larger force. I would suggest a good rooftop advantage for one or more of our other bowmen. The height will be good for spotting reinforcements and also provide ample options for firing on targets."
Sherra listens to Validar's point and she agrees, although she would still have enjoyed seeing the look on Lothar's face as his boat sank around him."That suggestion would certainly have a surprise factor to the result, Sherra, but if he were to have any other form of magic that involved water, Lothar still might be able to slip from our clutches.
Making Plans
Kylie:
The plan regarding Lothar's boat seems much too complicated, to Kylie's way of thinking. "Why not just cut the rope that holds the boat to the dock as soon as the battle starts and let it float away downstream? That way, all three of us are free to attempt the capture of Lothar in his house. Once that's taken care of, we climb on the roof of the house and provide arrow fire from there.
"If you're worried about someone getting ahold of the boat, we can always set it afire as we release it. My Burning Hands spell aught to work great for that."

Making Plans
Grondar:
Reviewing Validar's recommendation for boosting the size of the group on the far side of town, Grondar scratches his beard thoughtfully for several seconds. "I suppose if there are that many in the second group, they could advance into town more aggressively once the assault begins. That would really put the squeeze to them!"

still about boats...
Sherra:
"It is a question of mobility and if we posses it and the enemy does not, we can respond to situations as they develop. Also, as Validar mentioned, if Lothar has any water-based spells or magical items, and we destroy or otherwise get rid of the only easily-accessible boat, then he escapes. It also has to do with angles of fire. The rooftops are an important vantage point, which is why I mentioned them, but the water is as well. If we have one or two rooftops, the water, the main road into town and possibly another entry point covered, how can Lothar escape? A group of our size can easily handle all of these areas. We will not catch Lothar napping in his house. Do not let an easy victory over new recruits let anyone believe Lothar will be taken in such a lazy fashion." Sherra's normal smile is not in place as she tries to express the seriousness of what lies ahead for all of us.The plan regarding Lothar's boat seems much too complicated, to Kylie's way of thinking. "If that were the case, we could just have Corley walk over with his enhanced strength and throw a boulder on it and save your spell," Sherra reasons. "Spellcasting makes noise, which would ruin our chances of surprise or make you an important target to be taken out." Sherra shrugs, "I know if I could identify spellcasters in the enemy ranks then they would be the first ones I would eliminate.""If you're worried about someone getting ahold of the boat, we can always set it afire as we release it. Lilia:
"Now, would you be able to create such a weapon? Locate the ore, smelt it down, and forge this blade? I know I could not complete such a task. But in spite of my lack of knowledge in creating a dagger does not mean I cannot make use of it."
"Now apply that train of thought to magic. Just because one doesn't fully understand the concepts behind the various magical philosophies doesn't mean that they can't make use of spells. There are those mages who make intense and detailed studies of magic and those who only use it as a tool, a means to an end."
"What I am suggesting is that these inconsistencies and counter-intuitive magicks are only apparently to those who know they are there. To those who do not seek such deep understanding there are no problems."

The Elf Maiden will listen dispassionately to the talk of plans and tactics.
"I agree with Lord Validar's assessment. From what we've seen so far, Lothar and his lieutenants sacrifice their lackeys allowing the higher ups a chance to either aid them when confronted by a weak force or to flee when their forces are overwhelmed. The tactics of any group usually reflect their leadership, so I would suspect Lothar to sacrifice all his followers to save himself."
"Therefore we have a choice in tactics. Either infiltrate Twin Forks stealthfully and neutralize the lackeys before they are aware of our presence or make a great deal of noise in the hopes that Lothar does run into our waiting forces. Both plans have advantages and disadvantages to them, but neither seems to be better than the other, although the noisy approach my draw outsiders into the conflict who are not associated with Lothar."
"Since I am an elf, I would prefer a nighttime assault. I can be as silent as the wind if necessary and would serve well as one of the rooftop archers Sherra speaks of. Additionally, it would give me a good vantage point from which to make use of spells should they be needed."
During the night, Lilia will volunteer for one of the guard shifts. She only needs a few hours of sleep to feel refreshed and will be up studying her spell book anyway. Having just learned the Charm Person spell herself, Lilia is aware of its parameters and will not do anything to disrupt the magic.
The Elf Maiden watches with a curious eye as Sherwood casts his spell. Some type of Illusionary magic she notes as she observes his casting, but it is a spell unknown to Lilia. She raises a curious eyebrow as "Diabolicus" comes into existence. Lilia watches Sherwood's performance with her typical stoic look. It is very well down and would seem very real to someone unskilled in the magical arts.
A grin will come to Lilia's face after the bandits are out of sight. Stepping up to Sherwood, Lilia will say, "Until this moment, I had put little stock in Illusionary magic, Sherwood Elf-Friend. It appears that assessment was in correct."
"Illusions can be very powerful and very useful under the correct circumstances," Sherwood replies. "I wouldn't make use of them frequently, but sprinkled in where need can be most effective."
"Indeed."

Lilia will tend to avoid the two new men, Po and Saladin. She'll let the others deal with them and their charmed leaders. Once we are ready to ride, Lilia will move near the front with Laucian to lend her superior eyesight to scan the trail ahead for dangers.

"Perhaps you are over analyzing that point." Lilia will casually hold up the magical dagger she identified earlier. "Consider this dagger. Are you capable of using it? Of course, anyone can use it. Grasp it by the handle and thrust towards your enemy. No special knowledge is required."Kylie nods as she listens to Lilia's postulations. Much of it she has heard before from Jallarzi, of course, but it is insufficient to quench her curiosity. "There is much to what you say, Lilia. On the other hand, it seems to me that if some magic's are so entirely opposed to certain others, then they should be so for all. How then do those referred to as generalist mages overcome that opposition?
"Now, would you be able to create such a weapon? Locate the ore, smelt it down, and forge this blade? I know I could not complete such a task. But in spite of my lack of knowledge in creating a dagger does not mean I cannot make use of it."

Laucian
As the battle plans are begun Laucian listens to the others and adds comments when he feels to do so.
" I agree a night incursion would be most beneficial giving the circumstances. Grondor raises a very good plan though I do see a flaw within it. While this group circles the town," tracing the map,"The alarms could be raised. All Lothar would need is a fast horse and this group would caught out of position to catch him."
"Why not Limit the man's options and remove his horses from the field? We than could flush him towards boat or he would run in panic to the boat. Either way it would work in our favor seeing that the boat will be taken." He will look to the others faces judging their reactions.
"I will be one of the archers unless you prefer me elsewhere."
Before he goes to bed he will pray to his deity and go to sleep. He will volunteer for guard duty if the subject arises, preferably early morning shift.
When morning comes Sherwood asks the group not to interfere not matter what he says or does. "As you wish."
Knocking an arrow to his bow he waits for Sherwood to remove the wall. He will stand so that he can fire if needed.
Laucian remains stoned faced as Sherwood work his magic. After the men are out of sight a slight smile comes across is features. " I almost felt sorry for them...... almost. Well done Sherwood."
Laucian mounts his horse and moves to the point and waits for the others.

Ivy
Ivy:
Warily, Ivy will turn back when Lord Validar makes his own comments.
"Lord Validar, with all due respect, your very words only underscore my point that you do not know what it is like to be poor. That you truly do not understand the situation in Elcadan. Its seemingly inconceivable in your mind."
"The poor in Elcadan are little more than slaves. No, they are not held in chains that can be seen, but they are there. You say that people dissatisfied in Elcadan can simply leave for greener climes. How would you propose they do that? Should they all buy horses and simply ride away? The average family makes about 2 gold per month in Elcadan if they are fortunate. Assuming that a family saved all their money it would only take something on the order of six years before they could purchase a horse."
"But of course, they can't save money for that. They need to put food on the table, clothes on their back, and the other mundane things required to survive. Or maybe they should walk away, across dangerous lands with the threat of humanoid attacks and other threats. Would you really wish to walk to Pyris from Elcadan without any type of protection?"
"Book passage down stream? Ship passage is cheaper than a horse and is certainly a viable option, provided they can go without food for a month or two. If your only two options were to feed your family or go hungry, most will choose to eat. That is only simple explanation in this whole discussion."
"There are those skilled individuals who are able to escape their humble upbringings and make a good life for themselves. There are also those who are not as fortunate. They are trapped in an uncaring system with no way out. To them there are no options."
Later that evening, Ivy will change into her spare clothing and attempt to remove the blood from her garments. She will assist Kylie with the kitchen chores.
Next morning, Ivy is very disappointed that only two of the men do not such the taint of evil. They are too far gone to be saved easily. At least these two may make something better of themselves. Pointing the men out, Ivy will escort them away from the others.
Ivy quietly watches as Sherwood works his magic and manages to get the men to run to Pyris to turn themselves in. She is pleased that he was able to solve that dilemma peacefully.
"Well done, Sherwood. I thank you for your noble efforts."
Seeing that no one seems to want to do anything for Po and Saladin, Ivy will make sure that they reclaim their armor and weapons. She'll also try to reassure them that they are being given a chance to make something positive out of themselves. Hopefully they will be receptive to her words.
During the planning stage, Ivy has only two things to add to the conversation.
"I have access to spells that may add in our attempt to capture Lothar. If our intent is to drive him to his point, then I could cast a Wyvern Watch spell on the boat. When he approaches, the magic may paralyze him a few minutes thus ensuring his capture."
"As for dealing with the enemy mage, I can cast an area of Silence around a fighter and have that person engage the spellcaster. Again, it will only last a few minutes, but a mage who cannot speak cannot cast spells."
Warily, Ivy will turn back when Lord Validar makes his own comments.
Ivy sighs heavily to herself. She's heard this 'simple explanation' before."We all make choices and those choices all have consequences. Certainly people hear stories of other cities in the kingdom. Elcadan is not so closed as you make it sound. Even were they to hate the nobility in Pyris, which is strange to even consider, they must have word of the lifestyle available there to the common man. They are not slaves and they could easily have left in search of somewhere else. They may have a much more difficult life, but they made the simple and poor choice. That choice has its consequences."
"Lord Validar, with all due respect, your very words only underscore my point that you do not know what it is like to be poor. That you truly do not understand the situation in Elcadan. Its seemingly inconceivable in your mind."

"No, I do not know you or what you have done in the past. I do know that Pyris is a nice place for all to live and for that you and your family are to be commended. My point about you perpetuating the uncaring noble stereotype does not require me to have any knowledge about you for I witnessed it with my own eyes. Your own words and actions indicated such a thing to me.""Ivy of Azrella, you barely know me and you have no idea of the steps I have taken in order to help the under-privileged and poor. Not feeling pity for these fools who have chosen a life of banditry does not make me lacking in compassion."

For the glory of the Blue Lady!
Lord Corley
Corley:
"You are welcomed, fair lady."
"It also helps work up an appetite, friend dwarf!"
Next morning, Corley is surprised at what Sherwood is doing in spite of being warned ahead of time. It takes all his effort to not rush forward and do battle with the hell spawned beast! But it seems that it wasn't really there, but is sure looked real to Corley!
That leaves us with the men Lady Ivy separated from the others. "What are we to do with these two?"
The discussion of plans and tactics seems to be covering all the bases thus far. Lord Corley has nothing to add and will only require to know his place in the conflict.
"But you are correct, my friend. There is much yet to be done and many battles to be fought. After all, are we not the Sons of Cynalon? Do not the blood of Kings and Heroes both known and obscure flow through our veins? If we cannot elevator ourselves to a higher purpose and assist all those around us, then what good can come from any of this? We are better than those we fight. We should be held to a higher standard. We should reclaim what has been lost and make it safe for all Cynalonians! Aye let our tale be one that bards will sing for generations to come!"
"Thank you, Corley," Kylie says when relieved of the duty for moving crates. This frees her to seek out Lilia for their discussion of magicks.
"You are welcomed, fair lady."
Upon reaching the campsite, Grondar joins Corley in removing the crates from the cave. "Let me help with that. A little solid work is good for the soul, I always say." In truth, he seems to have no greater difficulty with the heavy boxes than Lord Corley.
"It also helps work up an appetite, friend dwarf!"

The discussion of plans and tactics seems to be covering all the bases thus far. Lord Corley has nothing to add and will only require to know his place in the conflict.
"Aye, Lord Validar, I know all to well the troubles that Elcadan causes. That I did not find disturbing. The true condition of the poor in Elcadan and their seeming hatred of the nobility I did find surprising. But, in hindsight, I suppose that it really shouldn't have. That is why I wish to see these slums with my own eyes.""Corley, you spent most of your time in our Barony or in the West. Elcadan has been a constant thorn in our side, and more as it is larger and has more influence in some areas with other landed lords in the kingdom, especially those far from our lands. The bandit activity is sponsored and condoned by the rulers of Elcadan and their merchant houses. I am sure that there is much chance to right wrongs in those lands."
"But you are correct, my friend. There is much yet to be done and many battles to be fought. After all, are we not the Sons of Cynalon? Do not the blood of Kings and Heroes both known and obscure flow through our veins? We fight for King and Country!
Sherwood
Sherwood:
Since the subject of politics did come up, Sherwood will ask Validar his opinion on the current state of the Kingdom.
"I couldn't help but overhear your discussion. I'm afraid, Kylie, that mages and scholars far more learned then I have debated the very questions you've asked since Mystra first let loose the gift of magic into the world. They have yet to come to a consensus."
"There is a legend that I have heard off that may explain the rational as to why things are as they are. It is said, in the distant past, that magic was far more potent than it is now. That there were spells more powerful than any that exist in our time. Scholars have divided all enchantments into nine groupings from simplest to most complex. Back in the time when magic was new there were twelve such groupings."
"In time, Lady Mystra discovered that magicks beyond those of ninth level had a baneful affect on mages who could memorize such spells. Holding such powerful enchantments was more than the mortal mind could stand. They fell into madness from their own spells."
"It is said that many magical disasters occurred from this. Lady Mystra looked out and saw the damage her gift was causing to the world and took them back to prevent such a thing from happening again. She limited her gifts to spells of ninth level or lower. It could also be further postulated that the reason why those mages who specialize in a particular field are denied access to another is just another sign of Mystra's will and desire to protect those who make use of her gifts from themselves."
"In short, the seemingly illogical way mages can learn and cast spells is because that is the way Mystra wishes it to be. Her reasons and logic are beyond mortal comprehension. Is it no wonder we refer to her as the 'Lady of Mysteries'?"
On the subject of planning…
"Yes, scouting is a must. That is also why I didn't have any specific plan in mind as the situation when I was last in Twin Forks my not be necessarily the same as when we arrive. The warrior and the mage are new, so they must be taken into account as well, along with any men they have in their employ. I would strongly suggest that we capture those two as well. Since Lothar acted upon their words, they may be the next link in the chain above Lothar. They may have knowledge of information currently unknown to Lothar."
"I think we shouldn't damage the boat, just in case we need to make use of it ourselves. In fact, I think it would be ideal to force Lothar to make for the boat. Ivy's idea of guarding it with a Wyvern Watch is a sound one. My initial scouting indicated that Lothar is not spellcaster of any type. He may have magic items in his possession, however."
"As for myself, I would prefer to be outside of the group structure. I'll use my Polymorph Self to transform myself into a bird and observe the town from high above. Then I'll be able to act as the situation plays out instead of trying to guess where to be. It'll make me far more mobile and able to chase after Lothar no matter what route he takes to escape."
"Securing Lothar's mounts is also a good idea and would serve to further channel into a direction of our choosing."
Sherwood is pleased by the results of his spells and quietly accepts the words of those who offer thanks. "At least that situation has been resolved. Let us hope the rest of this mission goes as smoothly."
After the men are gone, Sherwood will step up to Saladin and Po. "Gentlemen, we are giving you the chance to willingly assist us. As Lord Validar noted earlier it is possible for you two to be kept on as retainers. The work is not easy, nor would it be without peril. But you'll be part of the solution and no longer part of the problem. What say you?"
"Nor did I take your words as an insult, Grondar. The plain truth was that it could have been done differently."A serious expression graces Grondar's weathered features as he regards Sherwood. "I do not mean any disrespect or condemnation. I have no doubt you did what you felt was best at that moment. I pray that your plan for the others works as you intend.
"Whose to say, Validar? Whose to say? I would imagine that Padraig, like all sentient individuals, is a product of his environment. He learned his craft a certain way just as I learned mine in a different manner. That doesn't mean my method is any better or worse than his, just that it's different. That's what makes us all individuals.""Obviously, he was not as experienced or as skilled as yourself then. I did not agree with his use of magic in battle either. He squandered it when it was not necessary. Perhaps this was just his personality or perhaps he was not as great a mage as he thought."
"On that point, I would have to make a minor disagreement. For Elcadan to change with a minimum bloodshed, it would require the Kings involvement. That would be the ideal method in my mind.""There are pockets of this kingdom that are like a cesspool. Elcadan is truly one of the worst. We have to deal with their wickedness in Pyris on a regular basis. I do not relish them as a neighbor. But Elcadan will not last long, of that I am certain. And I do not think that the crown prince will have to lift a finger to see that course played out," Validar comments.
Since the subject of politics did come up, Sherwood will ask Validar his opinion on the current state of the Kingdom.
Sherwood had been listening to the young mages conversation from a distance. At this point he makes his way over."I think I'm going to have to ask Sherwood about this point. Thank you both for your ideas; clearly there is much yet for all of us to learn."
"I couldn't help but overhear your discussion. I'm afraid, Kylie, that mages and scholars far more learned then I have debated the very questions you've asked since Mystra first let loose the gift of magic into the world. They have yet to come to a consensus."

VALIDAR -
When Ivy makes her own over generalized and simplistic response, Validar will allow her to speak her peace. She makes some very valid points and is obviously quite passionate about her views and her desires to aid others. Unfortunately, she heads off on an tangent that is much more general than the question of the bandits' choices.
"I know you are passionate about your views, fair Ivy, but you stray from the discussion we started. We were talking about the bandits' choices, not the general poor of Elcadan. I am not discounting that the choice to become a bandit would lead you out of the poverty of Elcandan slums. I have been to Elcadan in the past and I have seen some of the things you mention and that is in the better parts of the city. I would not choose to life a life as those you speak about."
"However, the question on the table regards the men we fought. Please do not alter the subject. They were given provisions, weapons, armor, horses and money. They could have slipped away, sold their equipment and made a new life or become independent caravan guards and headed for Gateway and joined any number of adventuring parties, they could have joined the military ranks and earned money for their friends and family to assist them in leaving."
"You confuse people who are actively oppressed from those who engage in that oppression. You seek to help those who would only take advantage of you. You heart is pained in killing those who moments ago themselves would have slipped a sword between your ribs with a smile on their lips and their first thought would have been what was contained in your purse."
"Your passion is admired and to be honored, your naivite is as refeshing as it is frustrating. I hope that you are able to hold it. Many are not able. Ideals can be so elusive. As for actively witnessing my words and actions as being uncaring, you are certainly correct. I care little for the men we fought. Those few who may distinguish themselves otherwise will earn my respect, in the future. The others have already earned my disdain. We have made a bargain with them and that is satisfactory with me. If some have a chance to redeem themselves, then that is very pleasing to me. As for helping every hand that opens in front of you, I believe in assisting those that cannot help themselves. I believe in assisting those that are currently unable to overcome their circumstances with temporary help in order to let them better themselves. I believe in punishing those who seek to take advantage of others by putting them under their heel instead of helping then rise alongside them. I do not believe in helping those who do not dream to better themselves but only want another handout."
"I have passions of my own, but I do not believe that every soul can be saved. That is a fact of life. The situation is not simple, but the questions and the answers can be. Simply not enough people seek to be a part of the answer. The important thing is to be making changes where they are important and can do the most good. It makes no sense to pick up copper pieces first when there is gold mixed in the pile."
"There are always options. They question is whether we see them and search for them. It is too easy to become another's slave or servent. Taking responsibility for your own self is far more difficult regardless of your station, high or low."
"As for my own views, words and actions regarding those of poor standing in our kingdom, I have my own plans and they are already underway, if in their infancy. I will not stand here and recount tales of my own generosity and kindness. Glory comes on its own, not by beating your chest and sounding trumpets. Often the hen who has just merely laid an egg cackles as though she has brought forth the moon. However, I will ask you to make your judgements based not on this isolated incident on which we cannot seem to agree, but rather on all of my actions you witness. I am sure Azrella does not teach you to make snap assessments of character and to simply dismiss out of hand peoples' intentions, especially when we are dealing with our enemy and not an oppressed poor soul."
More about tactics-
Sherra - "It is a question of mobility and if we posses it and the enemy does not, we can respond to situations as they develop. Do not let an easy victory over new recruits let anyone believe Lothar will be taken in such a lazy fashion." Sherra's normal smile is not in place as she tries to express the seriousness of what lies ahead for all of us.
Validar is pleased as Sherra steps up to make the explanation to Kylie almost as exactly as he would have himself. Destroying the boat out of hand was his first impression too, but once thinking about it, that could prove to be an unecesary waste. "Sherra's worda are true. There is no reason to destroy something we could just as easily remove from him and use ourselves."
Sherra - "If that were the case, we could just have Corley walk over with his enhanced strength and throw a boulder on it and save your spell," Sherra reasons. "Spellcasting makes noise, which would ruin our chances of surprise or make you an important target to be taken out." Sherra shrugs, "I know if I could identify spellcasters in the enemy ranks then they would be the first ones I would eliminate."
"Indeed, Sherra. Your tactics and your sentiments are ones I share."
Grondar -Reviewing Validar's recommendation for boosting the size of the group on the far side of town, Grondar scratches his beard thoughtfully for several seconds. "I suppose if there are that many in the second group, they could advance into town more aggressively once the assault begins. That would really put the squeeze to them!"
"I would also prefer that they not simply wait as an anvil to stop Lothar's flight, but to move forward slowly and close the area of our trap."
Validar agrees with Lilia's assessment that the lackies of Lothar will be sacrificed. "We should avoid the troops that Lothar and his associates will use as much as possible. They will only attempt to slow us down and without their leader can be dealt with at the battle in a less fatal manner."
"I do think that the suggestion that neither plan of attack is no better than the other, fair Lilia, is not correct. By your very admission, other may get involved in the battle that would not otherwise. Once combat erupts, we may not be able to avoid it, but we should not welcome more trouble and distractions than necessary. If our goal were to take the town by force, then that course of action would be more appropriate, to make our force seem larger than it is."
Laucian's idea to release or move the horses is a good one. "That shall be a task for the scouts, then Laucian. You shold be well suited for the task yourself, in fact. The more mobility we remove from our opponents, the more likely we can capture the enemy that we seek. To capture Lothar we should try to funnel him to one or two escape routes. Hopefully magic will not come into play on his part."
"However, I do not think that we have to worry about the alarm being raised in town by one group circumventing the area. Those with woodland skills, yourself, Lilia and Sherwood, should be able to lead that group further wide enough around the town to avoid any sentries."
"Ivy's suggestion about the Wyvern Watch is a good one and will assist in the capture of Lothar. Sherra can commndeer his boat and keep it at the dock, with the Wyvern Watch in place. Lothar will be drawn to the docks if Laucian removes the horses and the lackey and associates are engaged elsewhere. If the boat is at the dock, the it wil draw Lothar out, the speall can disorient him and Sherra will be in perfect position to take him, along with assistance from the archers and Sherwood on high."
"We used the idea to cast a Silence spell to great effect in the Seekers as you mention, fair Ivy. My good friend Cereld would cast Silence spells on small stones and give them to the fighters. Then the could discard them if necessary, say the need to cast a healing spell on that fighter or other magic, or be able to hurl the to a point we could not reach. I suggest we do the same in this band."
(to be continued. I have lots more to add, but have to get back to work)

Conquer or Die!
Making Plans
Kylie:
Kylie listens as Lilia shares her thoughts on magic. Then Sherwood speaks up, surprising Kylie as she was not aware that he was listening. His explanation seems the closest that she has heard to explaining what she seeks to understand. "An interesting notion, Sherwood. For who can explain the choices and thinking of the gods? It is true that if Mystra wishes it so, then it is so and will not change until she decides. Thanks for your input; I think I have an answer that will satisfy me... for now."
=====
Sherra, Sherwood and Validar all weigh in on what to do with the boat. She hadn't envisioned the boat as a good vantage point for ranged fire, but it seems others see it differently. "I suppose that makes sense. If you feel that the boat can be used to our advantage, then do so.
"So as I understand it, we're to try to flush Lothar from his house and to the boat, rather than attempting to capture him in the house? If for some reason the spell doesn't work on him, it seems like this could be a problem. It seems safer to trap him in the house and capture him before he can leave. I would think that the three of us should be able to cover all the exits. This would also serve to keep him from the horses as well. Sherra could take off in the boat afterwards, perhaps with Lothar bound up inside?
"On the other hand, if Laucian is off diverting the horses, and Sherra is out on the boat, I may be hard-pressed to flush Lothar out of his house by myself. Plus, he and possibly others may be alerted by any sounds made by the horses as Laucian attempts to remove them from the area.
"Ivy's idea of using her spell is a good one, but as I understand it, she will be with a different group and not be there at the time. Since we believe the boat to be right by Lothar's house, stealth is necessary in our dealings there until the attack begins in earnest. I hope you won't take this the wrong way," she says to Ivy, "but I'm not sure you have the proper skills for this task. Besides, with Sherwood excusing himself to his own devices, the secondary group will need your help."

Making Plans
Grondar:
"Nothing wrong with a healthy appetite, Lord Corley," the dwarf replies with a grin. Of course, Corley may have noticed that Grondar tends to eat in moderation, making his statement seem odd.
=====
The discussion of tactics and strategy waxes long, and Grondar does his best to keep up with all of the ideas. "If I'm following all of this correctly, both Ivy and Lilia have offered to join the scout group at Lothar's house. Unfortunately, Sherwood has chosen to follow his own path, so the loss of these two would leave the two bandits on their own. Personally, I feel we need to priestess and the enchantress there to guide them and provide magical support. Certainly if this group is to provide a pincer maneuver, it needs to have sufficient strength to be a factor in the battle."
Grondar hitches his wide leather belt up as he pauses for breath. "I agree with the tactic of taking out the leaders first, then rounding up the rest of the bandits. While we'll probably have to go through some of the bandits to get to the leaders, hopefully we can move quickly enough to avoid many until the latter part of the battle.
"I must admit to sharing Kylie's concerns regarding the noise that may be caused by trying to round up Lothar's horses before the battle. It seems imperative that stealth be maintained until the main force commits to battle."
He turns to Validar. "I think we should keep Laucian with the stealth group, Validar, unless you want to trade him for Lilia. However, I suspect that she can lead Ivy and the two bandits in their group far enough around the town to avoid notice. I suppose we could have the infiltrators lead them around and then see to their own tasks, but that would consume extra time and delay the assault.
"In case it is of interest, Lord Validar, I too have been granted the use of Silence magics, and would be happy to use it as you direct."

Chareos
Charoes listens to the other mages statements regarding mages in general. "It does appear that we do." He listens to Lilia's explanation of why some mages can learns spells while others may not. Though he doesn't speak about it silently relates to what the elf maiden as said.
Soon after Kylie looks to Sherwood to advice on the matter. "This is one mystery that I would love to solve, though it may not be able to."
Chareos will help with dinner and clean up after word. When morning comes Sherwood approaches us all and asks us not to interfere no matter what unfolds. Chareos answers with a nod.
He watches as Sherwood conjures up a fiery dog from hell, by the looks of it. He cant help but feel sorry for them as the mastiff's burns a mark in each one respectively. When the men run for Pyris as fast as their feet can carry he begins to laugh. "That was a fine spell indeed my friend, you even had me fooled. Surely they will reach Pyris with all possible speed."
He than moves to the "new" recruits asking them if the need anything. If they do he will do his best to find things to suit their needs.
==
Validar raises the topic of tactics in taking Lothar. Charoes begins to listen the options the others suggest. Many of these sound good to him. "I share Kylie's concern for this mage and warrior." seeing how the night incursion is pretty much agreed upon Chareos will remain silent on that matter.
Chareos listens intently upon Validar's suggestion of grouping us. "This plan sounds very good to me though, Where would you be amongst us?" seeing how he left himself out of the groups.
He listens to Kylie's and Grondor's concern of the sound that the horses will make. "If Laucian succeeds in liberating the horses from Lothar's position than I believe the commotion it causes will be well worth it. Lothar may act irrational in an attempt to flee and head unknowingly into the trap waiting for him in the boats area.

Twin Forks Map
The map is upside down, meaning that the top is SOUTH instead of the traditional North. Houses labeled E & F are traditionally used as bunkhouses by Lothar's goons. The road you are approaching in on is the one near the words Twin Forks.
Lothar's boat is a small flat bottom river barge and is typical for this area.
Also, Validar will be offline until this Friday.
Try it and find out!
Maps!
Mad,
I don't see any bridges marked on the map. How are the rivers usually crossed to get around town?
Also, it looks as if the main party would be better off entering town by the road near the warehouse, if they can get there easily.
What about the roads that seem to lead off to the east (left on the map)? Are these a likely exit for those fleeing the area?
Gordon
PS, now that I think about it, I probably should have posted this in the Management thread...

There are bridges further along the river off the left side of the map. The rivers narrow there and are impractical for boat travel. Elsewhere along the river there are a series of small rowboats to locals use to cross back and forth to avoid going to a bridge.I don't see any bridges marked on the map. How are the rivers usually crossed to get around town?
Those roads lead on to other houses and to the outlaying farms. This map doesn't show all of Twin Forks, just the relevent portions. What about the roads that seem to lead off to the east (left on the map)? Are these a likely exit for those fleeing the area?
The only other town in this area, besides Pyris & Hendry, is a little placed called Hinmeet. It's due south on the map. A trail to it winds its way through the forest, hills and up into the mountains. Its a small out of the way village and its only real significance is that there's a small trail that can be traveled through the mountains to reach the inner kingdom lands.
Hinmeet seems an unlikely choice for Lothar to flee as it leads away from the areas where his bandits ply their trade. The river is the fastest way to get out of Twin Forks.
Try it and find out!

Making Plans
Grondar:
As the discussion of tactics continues, Grondar pauses to peruse the rough map provided by the charmed bandits. He also asks them a few questions to get some logistical details.
"Hrm..." he mutters, scratching his beard. Grondar looks over at the others, speaking up when the opportunity arises. "You know, it appears that the areas to the north and south of the rivers' confluence are essentially irrelevant to our task. All of our targets are in the eastern part of the town. Also, there are no bridges in that area and the primary mode of getting across the rivers is by rowboat, which are small, slow and highly vulnerable." Grondar gestures at the various areas of the map as he speaks.
"I would like to propose a change of strategy. I think we should cross the river upstream to the north from the town. The main group would swing wide around the town and come in from the east past the smithy, here, and head directly for the inn over here. This should bypass most of the subordinate thugs. Meanwhile, the secondary team can come down this road from the north past this warehouse and focus on containing and subduing the majority of the bandits. Since the secondary team would have less distance to travel before the attack, it might make sense for me to swap teams with Ivy.
"The stealth team's job would remain unchanged, for the most part. However, once they have captured Lothar, they can take the boat out on the water and use their bows to discourage anyone using the rowboats to flee. If they drop anchor just off the point of the convergence here, they should be able to be able to cover the river in all directions."

VALIDAR -
Just a quick comment regarding Grondar's plan:
"We definitely need to cross the river before we get to town. That would cause too much commotion, especially at night."
"Changing Ivy and Grondar makes sense, and even though Ivy could cast her spell as we discussed earlier, she could still hook back up with the main group once the spell is cast. We should have plenty of preparation time."
**I will try to post more soon, but have to recover from this long trip!**

Grondar:
As Validar speaks, Grondar nods thoughtfully. "Hrm..." he rumbles, considering the noble warrior's words. "Admittedly, I'm not a tactician, so I may be missing something. However, I'm concerned about the part involving Ivy's spell.
"The first problem is her getting to the boat to cast it. As I understand it, the boat is stored just beyond Lothar's house. Thus, Ivy would have to leave the main group and join the recon group in slinking around his house. This will weaken the main group; plus, I'm uncertain whether she has the skills to perform this task without giving them away. Additionally, it was stated just moments ago that spells are noisy, which might alert Lothar prematurely.
"Secondly, what happens if Lothar is captured without setting off the spell. If this happens, then we would lose access to the boat, unless we sacrifice one of the group to trigger it. I'm familiar with this spell, as it's one I have access to as well, and it lasts a very long time.
"Might it not be better to have Sherra sneak aboard the boat itself? Then Laucian and Kylie could enter Lothar's house from the front, flushing Lothar toward the back. If he flees toward the boat, he would be caught between them and Sherra."

"I think we can easily avoid the trouble of Ivy sneaking, using the Silence rock that I mentioned earlier. My idea would be that all of these actions would be in advance of the main group moving in and prepatory. Ivy of Azrella, how able will you be to cast this spell without alerting anyone? Also would it's area of effect preclude Sherra being able to be on the boat? I would like to have both the spell and Sherra's presence on the boat at our disposal."

"If Sherra is already on the boat then we do not lose access to it. No disrespect intended, but I am not convinced that Laucian and Kylie alone will be able to easily and quickly flush Lothar. I believe that he is much more skilled than the slugs working for him and we need to capture him quickly more than quietly I feel."
To answer Chareos earlier question:
Chareos listens intently upon Validar's suggestion of grouping us. "This plan sounds very good to me though, Where would you be amongst us?" seeing how he left himself out of the groups.
"Ah, I believe that I mentioned I would be in the main group as well, friend Chareos."
Currently we have the groups as follows (open to continued modification):
"No ideas are set in stone. I feel we can make changes as we need, such as Ivy's suggestion to use Wyvern Watch."
Stealth - Sherra, Kylie, Laucian, Ivy (just to cast the spell and then meet with the other group. Sherra gets the boat. Kylie and Laucian take to the high areas for bow support. Laucian can get the horses away, again using a Silence stone.
Support group - Ivy (once preparations are complete), Grondar, Lilia, Po and one of the lieutenants. This way if for some reason Ivy couldn't meet up with this group, she could join the main assault or be supported by the archers.
Main assault - Corley, Chareos, Saladin, the other lieutenant and myself.
"What concerns does anyone have about this dispersement of our troops?"
"The plan as we have it now, would be for the group to cross the river far from the town and come in from the north east. The stealth group utilizing two Silence stones would move in paired (Ivy & Sherra, Laucian & Kylie). Laucian would drive off the horses as Kylie found a sufficient archery position and Laucian would then do the same. Sherra and Ivy would get to the dock, cast Ivy's spell and Sherra would commandeer the boat."
"Meanwhile, the Support group would come in from the east. They would avoid the bandits and the Inn and be the pincer move for capturing Lothar if the others are unable on their own. The main group would come in and draw the most attention if possible, as far as the bandits and Lothar's friends are concerned. We will try to reach Lothar's house, but may end up encountering resistance. The other two groups will be in place before we come in from the north. How does this modified plan sound to everyone?"

VALIDAR -
Backing up a bit, to cover some things I missed or didn't have a chance to comment on earlier in the week:
Lord Corley - "Aye, Lord Validar, I know all too well the troubles that Elcadan causes. That I did not find disturbing. The true condition of the poor in Elcadan and their seeming hatred of the nobility I did find surprising. But, in hindsight, I suppose that it really shouldn't have. That is why I wish to see these slums with my own eyes."
"But you are correct, my friend. There is much yet to be done and many battles to be fought. After all, are we not the Sons of Cynalon? Do not the blood of Kings and Heroes both known and obscure flow through our veins? If we cannot elevate ourselves to a higher purpose and assist all those around us, then what good can come from any of this? We are better than those we fight. We should be held to a higher standard. We should reclaim what has been lost and make it safe for all Cynalonians! Aye let our tale be one that bards will sing for generations to come!"
"If what I am proposing comes to fruition, then the bards will have much with which to busy themselves. I intend to break the hold that Elcadan has on the Western portion of the kingdom and also to beat back the tide of humanoids who threaten the northen domains in that area as well. It will involve many battles, much diplomacy and great, epic quests. I hope that some of these men and women will join this noble cause. As of now, I relinquish my membership in the Seekers. There is too much here to accomplish for the kingdom and for the Barony. Once this situation is resolved, I would like you to ride with me to Gateway to reclaim my belongings from the Seekers mansion and to see if any of them will join our quest. There is much to do and the plan is but in its infancy. When Lothar has been dealt with and the rest of this mystery resolved, then we can continue in earnest. I welcome your sword at my side, my very dear friend."
Sherwood - "Who's to say, Validar? Who's to say? I would imagine that Padraig, like all sentient individuals, is a product of his environment. He learned his craft a certain way just as I learned mine in a different manner. That doesn't mean my method is any better or worse than his, just that it's different. That's what makes us all individuals."
"Your courteousness aside, Arch-Mage, I would rather fight alongside yourself, given the choice."
Sherwod - "On that point, I would have to make a minor disagreement. For Elcadan to change with a minimum bloodshed, it would require the Kings involvement. That would be the ideal method in my mind."
Since the subject of politics did come up, Sherwood will ask Validar his opinion on the current state of the Kingdom.
"I never said that there would be a minimum of bloodshed, Arch-Mage. I only said that the crown prince would not have to become involved in the changes in Elcadan. There is a huge difference."
"As for the state of the Kingdom, there is no question that the senility of our current King Victor has allowed those with power and connections to further corrupt the situations to their own ends. The lack of significant response to the humanoid incursions is but one example. The rampant abuses by nobles of the kingdom such as Elcadan and others in the inner lands has gone unchecked. The Crown Prince will be inundated by power moves and the attention of the nobles from lands such as Kelvin, Vorloi, Korisegy and others. The will attempt to secure the best treaties and pacts available hoping to influence a young king."
"The outer areas are generally afforded a lower status from the inner nobles. Whether the Crown Prince manages to overcome this prejudice himself remains to be seen, as well as whether he can afford any serious changes. It will take a more concious effort at the royal court to do so. And would also be benefitted if the outter Duchies and Baronies were more united in purpose. We are generally left to our own devices unless we have valuable goods to sell, such as Pyris, or are strategically located, such as Greystone, for expansion."
"The Kingdom requires a strong King to recover from our downward spiral. And it requires stronger rulers in the outer lands who do not allow themselves to be poor step-sisters of their larger, older and more influencial neighbors. We need to alter Elcadan's rulership and recover the lands lost to the humanoid incursions. We need to further cement our relationship with Greystone and the Elves and Dwarves. And we need the time to complete these actions without outside meddling. Then the Kingdom will be poised for expansion and greatness. The dreams of Victor the 1st have been corrupted as time has passed and Cynalon needs to return to those ideals."

Kylie - Later, Validar begins a discussion of tactics for their assault on Lothar and his cronies.
"We are not certain they are even in town, Kylie. The main group should be able to deal with them. I would hope Laucian could toss the Silence stone at the mage should that come into play and if we use one on Corley, he could also prove to be a major nuisance to the mage. Their presence does not concern me as much as being certain to not let Lothar get away. However, capturing them alive will be a major plus as well. Even one of them."

Lilia:
The Elf Maiden listens to Sherwood's tale about Mystra's actions with interest. In some of the elven books she read such things are hinted at. However those tomes seemed to suggest that only human minds could not contain such powerful spell energy. From the way that Sherwood speaks all mortal spell casters would have been affected by this. Curiously, there is no mention of elfin spellcasters causing trouble back during the dawn of magic. It is something Lilia would like to investigate at a later time.
"Indeed, Mystra is wise and mysterious in her ways. Just because we cannot fathom her reasoning, does not mean she acts randomly. Such is the will of the gods."
Lilia scans the crude map with her strong elfin eyes. "It seems to me that I should take up a position on the roof of this house here." Lilia points to the house labeled 'A'. "Lothar's house and boat would be before me. Should Ivy's spell fail, I could still catch Lothar in a Web Spell about the boat. Furthermore, any additional support from either the Inn or the bunkhouses would also be before me."

"Another factor is the current state of things is that our armies are not as strong as they were before the war. The kingdom lost much because of that war, some of which we have yet to recover. The continual raids from the Broken Lands do not help. Mathematically, we are fighting a losing battle. We humans create a new generation every twenty years or so. The humanoids need only wait ten years to double their population. Granted we are superior fighters, but they outnumber us greatly. Thus the strong reliance on adventurers to help stem the tide and fill in for our missing armies. A powerful warrior can slay many humanoids in battle. This just further underscores the need to find and identify those adventurers who can fill this niche and why I form bands such as this to find them."
Sherwood is pleased with how the latest planning session is turning out. He has no significant thoughts to add to the discussion at this point.
Random Comments:
With a wink, Sherwood will respond with, "The next time I see her, I'll inform Lady Mystra that Kylie Lanthorn wishes to no more about the nature of magic. I wonder what her response would be?""An interesting notion, Sherwood. For who can explain the choices and thinking of the gods? It is true that if Mystra wishes it so, then it is so and will not change until she decides. Thanks for your input; I think I have an answer that will satisfy me... for now."
"I will take that as a compliment." Sherwood makes no sign of it, but doesn't consider himself to be an arch-mage. Such titles more correctly go to his Uncle Sharadin, his cousin Jallarzi, and a few others. Why is it so difficult to simply be addressed as Sherwood? Still, it is better than being called lord and far more accurate."Your courteousness aside, Arch-Mage, I would rather fight alongside yourself, given the choice."
"The King is very much a product of the environment he grew up in. As a small boy he saw his father go off to war against Keln and never return. He was there when the borders to the west fell under the humanoid onslaught. Heard the reports of thousands of men, women, and children being killed. Such things cannot help but shape a man's life when witnessed so young. Is it any wonder that he was so leery of expanding the Kingdom's borders once more? Perhaps that is why he sees Elcadan as being a stable domain in spite of the way its citizens are treated. The King is almost desperately trying to keep kingdom stable. This is why he married and had children so late in life and also why he is so unwilling to give up the crown in the tradition of previous kings. Change is coming, Validar. We just have to be patient. The Crown Prince is a good man. He will not be swayed by those who fatten themselves at the expense of others.""As for the state of the Kingdom, there is no question that the senility of our current King Victor has allowed those with power and connections to further corrupt the situations to their own ends."

Ivy
Ivy:
Ivy has little to say after Validar completes his speech. She's too tired to discuss the matter any further and given our radically different points of view seems fruitless.
On the discussion of spells, Ivy will add, "You may be overstating the value of my Silence spell, my friends. Its duration is very short, only a handful of minutes and the area of affect is small. It would be best serve cast right before entering battle to ensure maximum efficiency."
"I am not straying at all, Lord Validar. It is that environment where most of these men come from. It is what sent them down this dark path to begin with. I was fortunate to be helped through the kindness of others and was able to rise above such humble beginnings. Had these men encountered a helping hand instead of an iron fist their lives may have played out very differently.""I know you are passionate about your views, fair Ivy, but you stray from the discussion we started. We were talking about the bandits' choices, not the general poor of Elcadan. I am not discounting that the choice to become a bandit would lead you out of the poverty of Elcadan slums. I have been to Elcadan in the past and I have seen some of the things you mention and that is in the better parts of the city. I would not choose to life a life as those you speak about."
"Lord Validar, you overlook the obvious. They found a place where they were accepted and had friends. When you have nothing, you cannot underestimate the value of comradeship. We all have the need to belong. Scum like Lothar prays upon this need. He is kind to them and in turn they do things back for him. One does not plunge headfirst into a life of evil, it is learned in small steps. A small sacrifice here, another there, and before they realize it they are doing things they never would have considered before. Its very sad and insidious.""However, the question on the table regards the men we fought.
"While I make no claims as being as 'silent as the wind", I do not wear armor and can move with a minimum of noise if need be.""Ivy's idea of using her spell is a good one, but as I understand it, she will be with a different group and not be there at the time.
"I believe I can, Lord Validar. While it is true that words of power are chanted as part of invoking the magic, there is no need to shout them. They can be whispered if need be. The only limitation is that they must be spoken. As long as Sherra keeps about fifteen feet or so away from where I place the spell, then she would be fine. Perhaps I should place the spell where the boat is tied off? Lothar would have to free the boat to make use of it to sail down river.""I think we can easily avoid the trouble of Ivy sneaking, using the Silence rock that I mentioned earlier. My idea would be that all of these actions would be in advance of the main group moving in and prepatory. Ivy of Azrella, how able will you be to cast this spell without alerting anyone? Also would its area of effect preclude Sherra being able to be on the boat? I would like to have both the spell and Sherra's presence on the boat at our disposal."
For the glory of the Blue Lady!
a plan coming together..
Sherra:
Sherra stretches as she realizes just how long the planning has been going on, and quietly hopes all will be ready to make it reality very shortly.
Ivy seems pretty confident that she will be able to cast her spell without being detected. "Then that sounds like the plan concerning the boat," Sherra replies. "If I need to use the boat I can always cut it free from my position. I can also move to grab Lothar after he trips the spell if I'm understanding its effects correctly.""I believe I can, Lord Validar. VALIDAR -
Back to the Ivy-Validar philosophical debate:
Validar is surprised that Ivy seems to so easily condone and accept the evil life these men have begun. Wanting to help them is one thing, but actually defending it surprises the noble warrior. "We are still all responsible for our decisions and our actions," Validar will simply state with conviction. "Blaming others for one's own circumstances is the sign of a weak person. We all receive our chances. Most fail to act on them."
Validar will let the matter drop when Ivy does, as he also sees that they will not convince the other with words or ideas.
The planing session seems to be winding down and the final bits are coming together.
"A very wise obsercation, Lilia. I agree with your assessment whole-heartedly. That would make Laucian's best spots around the houses labeled either B or C, I should think. Either has a view of the Inn although, it appears B is the more advantageous overall considering its proximity to Lothar's dwelling and also the road to the warehouse and the bandit bunkhouses."
Sherwood - "I will take that as a compliment."
"It was intended as one," Validar will simply say. The noble warrior is not quite sure what caused Sherwood's vaguely noticeable uncomfortableness, but that just seems to be his way around Validar.
Sherwood - "The King is very much a product of the environment he grew up in. He will not be swayed by those who fatten themselves at the expense of others."
"That is a tall order if it is true. In any case I would prefer to deal with Elcadan and Stone Ridge amongst the outer lands and not have too much influence from the crown, until our plans are in motion. I am certain that the Crown Prince will be a better King than his father. Granted our current liege has had a difficult series of circumstances." Validar thinks to himself that change will much more pronounced in this area of the kingdom than others may begin to dream.
Sherwood - "Another factor is the current state of things is that our armies are not as strong as they were before the war.
Our armies are not as strong as they once were because the inner nobles have refused to commission troops to assist the outer domains and the Crown failed to demand it to support our outer lands. Some of the Dukes are more powerful in the Kingdom at this moment than the King homself. They use our lands, as well as the Dwarven and Elvin lands as buffers to their decident and opulent lifestyles. The rich of the inner lands have more wealth than the rulers of most of the outer baronies and they have us to protect it for them. You are correct when you state that change is coming. Of that I can promise you."
"Adventuring bands indeed can help to turn the tides, but it is necessary to have standing defenses that will withstand the next humanoid uprising and also the unitedness of a kingdom to come to the defense of individual baronies instead of leaving them to fend for themselves. There is a chance that this very group here or some of these individuals may be responsible for some of that change."
Regarding the taking of the boat and the trap:

"I think the spell should be placed at the point that he would step on the dock. We do not want Sherra affected by the spell if she is hiding on the boat herself. Sherra should perhaps move the barge out slightly to avoid the fifteen feet spell range."
Sherra - Ivy seems pretty confident that she will be able to cast her spell without being detected. "Then that sounds like the plan concerning the boat," Sherra replies. "I believe our plan is complete if there are no more comments, suggestions or concerns. I would like to thank everyone for their input. This has truly been a group effort. Rest well, my friends. We have our biggest battle before us tomorrow."
By the next day, we approach to within 3-4 hours of Twin Forks. The group stops and we review quickly our duties and the overall plan. Validar will suggest changing places with Grondar so that he can cast his silence spell at the last moment to give to Corley. That will maximize the time the spell can be used. We will make a camp at some point and rest and prepare for the upcoming assault.

Conquer or Die!
GM Notes:
Quick question here:
You guys going to ride to just outside Twin Forks and wait for nightfall to carry out your plan, or send a scout or two in to look around in the daytime?
That part wasn't clear in the postings.
Thanks!
