Operation: Graystone #24

April 15th, CR 569

Many of the hobgoblins that attacked Eagle's Nest have been defeated. The Squad now advances on what remains of the attack force in the woods. Best guess would suggest there are at least six of the enemy remaining, as that was the number of arrows fired at the group as they approached.

Once close enough the scouts were off into the woods beside the area where arrows had been coming from. Butternut, Kaylessa, Ren and Vernar fanned out as they moved through the woods, keeping watch for the enemy. Instead Ren found a trap! Containers of Alchemist's Fire were found concealed behind the trees with a fuse attached to them. If the fuse was lit, the containers would explode in succession and greatly harm anyone in the area.

More containers are found as the scouts move further away from the hillside up to Eagle's Nest. Finally a shadow is noted further ahead, suggesting that an enemy is on watch and is ready to light the fuse. Vernar disarmed the first container while Kaylessa handles the next two.

Butternut moves off, stalking through the forest like a hunter on the tracking prey. Silently the halfling circles around and comes in from behind the hobgoblin. The enemy is oblivious to the danger he is in until Butternut drives her shortsword through his side! The hobgoblin howls in pain and turns to face his attacker. As he goes for his own weapon, Butternut drives her dagger into the hobgoblin's belly, slashing is stomach wide open! Blood and guts covers the immediate area as the hobgoblin slumps to the ground.

Back where the road enters the force, the rest of the Squad start to move into the woods. Instead of taking the road, they split into two groups and travel down either side of the well worn trail. Suddenly a brutish scream fills the area from not that far ahead!

Butternut's vicious attack was also noted by one other: another hobgoblin on the other side of the road! Instead of going for his weapons, this hobgoblin appears to be trying to light the fuse on his side of the road!

Vernar sees this and hurtles his throwing axe, catching the hobgoblin square in the chest. The attack was not enough to put the enemy down, but Ren tosses a couple of daggers for good measure and that finishes the hobgoblin off. Kaylessa quickly crosses the road and cuts the other fuse just to be safe.

A quick search of the area reveals no other enemies around. The rest of the squad catches up with the scouts and can compare notes.
Try it and find out!

GM Notes:

Everyone is back together once more. As noted in the post, no other enemies is noted in the immediate area. If there were more of them, they have departed the area. It's late morning by now, time wise.

Hit Points:

Butternut – 18 of 21
Erisciana – 17 of 19
Gerett – 11 of 15
Flare – 19 of 25
Wimzy – 12 of 14

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Erisciana, priestess of Ishtar-

With the archers having retreated, Erisciana sends the main group into the forest in 3 smaller sub-groups. They move out, avoiding the road and move down along it looking for any remaining enemy. As they slowly advance, looking for some signal from the scouts, a brutish scream is heard. "Sounds like our people found another enemy." Erisci will signal to her group to start moving forward to make sure the scouts don't need assistance. A bit more sound of combat rings out briefly and then silence.

The groups form back up just off the road. The traps are disarmed and the remaining few enemy dispatched. For now at least, the immediate threat has finally come to an end.

"We have driven off the enemy," Erisciana states to the collective group. "The enemy committed a significant number of forces to this battle. With skill and some measure of good fortune, Hextor's forces were turned aside." The priestess will look at each of the assemblage briefly. "Well done!"

"Now we must decide on our next steps. The sheer size of the attack that was brought to bear against us this day and the manner of it has me concerned. However, we were given a mission by the now-departed Crandell. We can collect ourselves and then ride out to try and complete it. We can consider a direct attack on the goblins infesting the dwarven tunnels below our feet. We can scout the road up to the besieging enemy, seeking to engage any rear guard and draw as many enemy away from the fort attack that we reasonably can. Or we can fortify this place here, creating defensive positions along the approach and make this into somewhat of a safe haven." She will look to see how the others might respond.

Laurel keeps the shield at bear but struggles because she is unaccustomed to the weight. After what seems like an eternity of pressing forward (probably only 5 minutes but hey, this shield is *heavy*) Erisciana gives her orders.
Erisciana wrote:“Vernar, when we clear the mountain wall, can you send your scouts into the forest to the left of the archers’ position? We’ll halt the Shield wall to allow for covering fire. Then we’ll continue our advance and press them from the front.”
Vernar wrote:"Understood," he replies simply. He is glad to once again be doing something, but his demeanor remains neutral.
Butternut wrote: "Got it."
Laurel looks about the group, unsure if she's meant to go with the scouts or stay here. Vernar doesn't motion for her to join them so she continues in formation. Despite her poor performance with the shield nobody had been hurt by the barrage. Her pale face and dark hair peeks over the top of the shield, causing more cracks to appear in the defensive wall. The sound of arrows hitting metal had dwindled to nothing.
Vardra wrote:"I haven't seen or heard any shots from below recently, I think they've stopped firing. Either they've run off, or they're planning some other strategy."
Butternut wrote:"Thought So"
Gerett wrote:"Vermin went to ground," Gerett said, mainly to himself. "Our assassins will spook those grouse out of their bush...and we'll stick 'em."
Butternut wrote: "Assassin? Not the most flattering name I've been called... but perhaps not the worst, either."
Laurel smiles at the banter going back and forth between the group. She did not feel very light-hearted in this moment. She was wet and tired and wasn't feeling particularly useful. But it was good that despite the dire circumstances that they had been in only minutes earlier and the relentless attacks, that the group was still able to keep a light mood. It was perhaps...necessary ... in times like this. Still, witty banter was not one of her strong suites and many boots muddy the water. To her it seemed best to hold her tongue.
Lucyus wrote:We may need to be ready to drop the shields and charge.” He says as he holds his tower shield steady.
The young woman looks slightly relieved at this, the shield was quite heavy and she, having no formal training, was quite clumsy with it.
Butternut wrote:"If we get in trouble, Lucyus, I certainly hope you'll come runnin'."
Erisciana wrote:"Hopefully the four of you will be the ones causing the trouble, we will press the enemy from the front."
Kaylessa wrote:“Give the word and I’ll cover your approach. Then I’ll join you.”
Vardra wrote:I'll cover you as well,"
Laurel holds her spot in formation as the scouts make their way into the woods while Kaylessa and Vardra provide cover fire. It seems the hobgoblins were hiding well because no arrow hit a mark and there appeared to be no movement in the forest. Hopefully the gobos weren't planning any nasty tricks.
Vardra wrote:"Well, that was easy..."
Lucyus wrote:“Let’s pick up the pace!”
The group collectively quickens as they head down the muddy slope. Then, one begins moving faster than the rest...Lucyus clatters down the slope, losing his shield and loosening some of his armor. Laurel gasps and tries to keep her shield at the ready without losing her own footing. Surely the enemy would take advantage of their predicament! But oddly no arrows were fired at the prone paladin. Vardra asks the man if he's ok and he replies that he's fine. The already loosened soil then gives way under Vardras foot causing him to fall, although his fall seems much more awkward. Laurel is grateful that the goblins don't seem to be watching at this moment and hopes that the scouts haven't run into any trouble. The group convenes at the bottom of the slope and inspects the downed warriors. Finding them not worse for the wear the priestess smiles and cracks a joke:
Erisciana wrote: "Good thing your rear is as well armored as your front. Fortunately it looks like the archers have retreated."
Lucyus wrote:“I’ve had worse. ”
Vardra wrote:"Gonna have a nasty bruise tomorrow,"
Lucyus wrote:“Seems to me many a lady tend to like men with bruises and scars. Why? I haven’t the slightest.”
Laurel smiles at the mens posturing. Lucyus never struck her as the type to have had much experience with women. Just enough to make that sort of remark and it be innocent and not chauvinistic. But who was she to judge him on that. It's not like she had much experience in the realm of men either. Or with people... or anything outside of books.
Lucyus wrote:“Strange….They left the field.”
Erisciana wrote:"Yes, if they were smart. They likely just witnessed the defeat of more than six score of their own. In this case retreat is preferable to valor. Let us move into the trees so that we are not out in the open. Flare and Laurel fan out slightly to our left and keep an eye out for trouble. Lucyus, cross the road with Kendall and Vardra to the forest on the other side. Don't go too far. But I don't want to be bunched up in case we are attacked."
The young woman nods as Lucyus gives a verbal affirmative:
Lucyus wrote:“We will see it secured. Though I’ll try to keep my legs and wits about me this time. Come Kendell, Vardra let us see if our foe still linger over yonder.”
Laurel drops the large shield and brushes her long, dark hair out of her face before pulling out her sword and motioning for Flare to lead the way. (she being unaccustomed to the environment) They had barely begun their scouting maneuver when several inhuman shrieks rip through the forest. Laurel jumps in suprise, but recognizes the sound of hobgoblins dying. She motions to Flare for them to move faster towards where the scouts are. While still trying to do a thorough job in making sure nobody is flanking them. When the group joins together the priestess gives an address:
Eristiana wrote:""We have driven off the enemy. They committed a significant number of forces to this battle. With skill and some measure of good fortune, Hextor's forces were turned aside. Well done!"Now we must decide on our next steps. Or we can fortify this place here, creating defensive positions along the approach and make this into somewhat of a safe haven."
Laurel glances about the group. She's not sure she really has an opinion on this one. Her first choice would be to go back to the tower and recuperate. This would give them a chance to gather their horses (and other assorted animals) and provide first aid for the injured. It would also let spell casters regain their spent spells. After that...who knows. At this point it might even be too late to worry about ambushing the caravan. While she longed to go with Sann back into the tunnels beneath Eagles Nest she knew that the only course of action for them was to support Graystone in whatever way they could!

Vernar -

It is a simple enough task to disarm this trap, but Vernar did not want to simply assume. In truth, the hobgoblins had little time to set an ambush, so he is able to make short work of their clumsy attempt. Before pressing forward, he looks back to see if any of the others can be spotted, and if so, he will indicate the location of the now-disarmed trap.

Although initially not sure where Butternut and Kaylessa got off to, the question is soon answered by the guttural scream of an enemy receiving a painful death. At that instant, Vernar sees movement not far from him. A hobgoblin trying to light the fuse!

"Oh no! You not be doin' that!" he exclaims, hurling his axe end over end to thunk solidly in his foe's chest. The hobgoblin staggers, looking like he might still manage to complete his task before a brace of Ren's daggers ends the enemy definitively.

"Thanks," Vernar says to Ren as he pulls his axe from the hobgoblin's chest, wiping the foul blood on the wretch's armor and/or cloak. Making sure the rest of the scouts are alright, the four of them meet back up with the others.
"I say we at least be checkin' out the rest o' this enemy force," Vernar offers after a moment of thought. "Make sure nothin' be lingerin' between here an' there, then do some damage to 'em if it be feasible."

The dwarf's demeanor shows that he is amicable to other plans as well, but he thinks we should press on, mopping up any remaining stragglers and see what the enemy rear guard, if any, looks like to determine if that is where the group can make the most impact.

Vardra Marcus, PFC:
Lucyus wrote:“I’ve had worse.” The paladin says easily. “No worse for wear, I am afraid.”he says as he regains his feet.
"Glad to hear it," Vardra replies with a nod. As it turns out, fate has a similar indignity waiting for him just moments later.

Rising after his own stumble on the steep slope, the tenderness in his knee leaves Vardra limping just a little bit. Fortunately, it should ease up soon.
Lucyus wrote:“Seems to me many a lady tend to like men with bruises and scars.” He says with a shrug, “Why? I haven’t the slightest.”
"Perhaps," Vardra replies uncertainly. "I really wouldn't know. My grandmother always said that there was 'someone for everyone'. I'm just hoping that she was right." From his expression, the soldier doesn't seem sure either way. He follows the paladin across the road when called upon to do so.

As they advance through the woods, gutteral shouts from either side of the road - both in a language he doesn't recognize - seem to indicate that the scouts have slain two more of the hobgoblins. As far as they can tell, no others are in the immediate area. One of the scouts points out the fire traps that had been laid. "Good thing ya'll were able to prevent them from catching us with those. That could have been a very ugly situation."

When everyone is back together, Erisciana congratulates the squad on their success; a sentiment that Vardra shares. His limp seeming to have subsided, he smiles as he looks about the group. "Everyone appears to be in relatively good health, and I thank the gods above for that." The priestess follows her comment with a question regarding what they should do next.
Vernar wrote:"I say we at least be checkin' out the rest o' this enemy force," Vernar offers after a moment of thought. "Make sure nothin' be lingerin' between here an' there, then do some damage to 'em if it be feasible."
Vardra nods to the dwarven scout. "I agree that we should ensure that no other enemy are in the area. After that, I think we should go down the back stairway and hit the goblins. If I recall most of the discussion from before, the consensus seemed to be that the supply caravan would probably not arrive until after dark. If we attack the goblins during the day, we may be able to wipe them out before any supply caravan or reinforcements arrive."

"Once that is done, we can get a bit of rest - though of course we would want to set up watches. If the enemy come seeking supplies, there would be no goblins left to help them load up, or even to show them where to find the supplies. They may well end up having to split up and search the halls and rooms down there, which could give us an opportunity to attack them in smaller groups. Plus, if our friend Vernar here can get control of the stone dwarf again, that would swing the balance substantially in our favor." After saying his piece, Vardra looks around to see how the others react to his recommendations.

Lucyus is quiet as the others put forth their ideas as what to do. Many wish to continue on to make sure the area is secure. A thought that the paladin agrees with. As they finish he puts forth his own opinion.
“If this caravan is still coming, I feel we need to remove it so that their supply lines are challenged. The enemy would not only have to look ahead but behind them as well, slowing them slightly. With the added firepower from the Alchemists’ traps we can turn their weapons against them, burning their supply line as the Alchemist’s fire renders them useless. After the caravan is dealt with, We should revisit the fort and make it defenseable. Then we can strike out at the goblins hiding in their hole as Vardra has stated. I would not count on seeing the Stone dwarf again though, nor plan on it. It could be rubble by now, twitching upon the ground.”

Kaylessa
Coming alongside the trap Kaylessa takes out her dagger and slowly cuts away the fuse to the first trap then the second.
Gruttal screams are heard in the direction Butternut went, drawing her eyes to the direction, in a few moments she sees the bloodied halfling walking back. Picking up the two traps she brings them back with her to the others.
Eristiana wrote:""We have driven off the enemy. They committed a significant number of forces to this battle. With skill and some measure of good fortune, Hextor's forces were turned aside. “I feel we need to remove the goblins nest from the field. They have supplied the enemy and will continue to do so until they are killed or the enemy wins. Let us strike at the Goblins and the caravan.” She says simply.

GM Notes:

I've been asked to provide the opinions of the various NPC's in regards on what to do next. Here goes!

Kendell – First thing he'll want to do is gather up the horses and secure them and provide them food and water. After that it doesn't matter much to him. He'd rather not be underground in the dark again. Acquiring more food is a priority.

Sorvani – Thinks the scouts should look to see if the caravan is coming or not. These hobgoblin's could have been part of a force escorting the caravan, so they could be loading right now or are already leaving the area. Having enough food is important. The goblin lair is tempting for the potential of more rewards and spells.

Flare – Will help round up the horses. Suggests sending his companion, M'Lady out to survey the immediate area. The hawk can cover more ground faster than the scouts. See if there really is a caravan or more enemy forces and then plan accordingly. Would prefer to be outside, but not hindered underground like other humans are.

Ren – Would be eager to fully explore the goblin lair for treasure and magic! If there is a caravan, the Alchemist's Fire containers the squad has acquired could burn it all down efficiently.

Wimzy – Would want to get more supplies and not do anything overly risky. Does not like the idea of going back underground, but those icky ghouls need to be removed at some point.

Sann – While not part of the army, his personal mission would be to go back into the dwarven lair, kick the goblins out, find the knowledge that he seeks and see that his former companions are properly laid to rest.
Try it and find out!

Erisciana, priestess of Ishtar -

The group takes a moment to discuss the options that the priestess pointed out. There is some consensus on objectives. Erisci agrees with Flare’s suggestion to get an aerial viewpoint. “Your suggestion is well founded. Send your companion to scan the area. The potential existence of the caravan presents an opportunity to hurt the enemy and gain us potentially needed supplies.”

"I say we at least be checkin' out the rest o' this enemy force," Vernar offers after a moment of thought. "Make sure nothin' be lingerin' between here an' there, then do some damage to 'em if it be feasible."

"We've used up some of our spell power and some healing as well, but for the most part we are near full strength," the priestess offers. "We have the ability to do some more damage to the enemy this day, depending on what we find. We don't know exactly when the caravan was coming. If it passed, perhaps we can catch it. If it is loading then we can strike a blow to the goblins as well. If it is not seen, then we can determine what other enemy lurk about and consider an attack against them."

Lucyus added his own thoughts to the conversation. After the caravan is dealt with, We should revisit the fort and make it defensible. Then we can strike out at the goblins hiding in their hole as Vardra has stated. I would not count on seeing the Stone dwarf again though, nor plan on it. It could be rubble by now, twitching upon the ground.”

She will look around at everyone as she speaks. “If we locate the caravan, we should seek to capture it and failing that, destroy it. However there may be food and weapons of which we would not only deprive the enemy, but make use of ourselves. The goblins in the caverns below are likely not going anywhere and we would be well-served to prepare fully for an underground attack before we look to engage and defeat them. Also this location here, Eagle's Nest is rather poorly aligned for defense. There is much that should be done if we are forced to use this as a base for an extended period.”

"As for the Stone Dwarf, commanding it again is a fine contingency plan should we be able to reach it. I would guess that it returned to its designated place, right where we found it, once it ran out of immediate enemies. When the time comes to attack the goblins, it is worth a consideration to bring into use again."

“The way I see it,” The elf explains, “Your group saved mine and together we succeeded in this battle together. Yet I still feel indebted to you all, for saving us from rotting away in Bolo’s stomach.”

Erisci will step over and place her hand upon the elf's shoulder. "Nye zha schto. We have fought together and bled together. Anyone who wishes to continue to fight together neither owes nor is owed anything from each other except mutual respect."

“Wimzy, would you use your healing gifts on Gerett and Flare? They are the most wounded of us.” Turning to Laurel, she will ask, “Do you have any healing remaining?”

“I will take Kendall, Sorvani, Flare, Gerett and Kaylessa to collect and bring down all of our horses. Vernar, you may want to set up a forward screen in the trees with your scouts in case the enemy finds their bravery again.” Turning to Lucyus, she will say, “We will return as quickly as possible.”

The priestess will take a group up to recover the horses and bring them down. While Flare and Kendall help the others gather and prepare the horses, the priestess will ask Kaylessa to accompany her to the top of the tower. She is curious how the battle has gone since early this morning. And also if there is anything else that can be seen from their vantage point such as other troop movements.

It would be unwise at this point to give up the position in the forest that they just fought to gain. Lucyus and the others can make sure that they are not pushed back to the road again in case the enemy rallies. Once the horses are brought down, the scouts can lead the way, until they get some information from Flare’s hawk.

More GM Notes:

Since I brought up the subject of food, I went back and figured out how much food there still is. I'm breaking this down into 3 meals per day and the amount of food being servings. Since water is plentiful, I'm not including that in these calculations.

Wyvern Squad started out with 168 servings of food. That's 8 people having 3 meals a day for a week. They had lunch on the way to Eagle's Nest, so 8 people consumed 8 servings. 160 left. This number does include the food left behind on the mounts as it was recovered later on.

From there they fell into the trap, what food was on them was drenched in the scummy water. Traken was killed so 7 people eating. Next morning it was purified and eaten. Since people were really hunger, I count this time as double amount of food consumed. Making up for dinner the day before and breakfast this morning. So 14 servings consumed, 146 left.

Later on, they found 4 surviving members of Chimera Squad were found. They had no food left, so they each consumed 3 times as much food as normal, or 12 servings while eating in the cave. That leaves 134 servings left, but they did have some food left behind on their horses that was not included above. About 42 servings, so that takes us back to 176 servings left.

The group made their way through the goblin infested dwarven lair and found Sann. They escaped and made their way back to Eagle's Nest. They ate lunch on the walk back and then later had dinner around the campfire. That's 2 meals for 12 people, or 24 servings. 152 left. But some rations were recovered from the mules Sann's party used. That was 45 servings, so that takes us up to 196.

That night the scouting party showed up followed by Laurel, Gerett and Crandell. They were low on food, just 32 servings between them. Grant total now 228.

Some food was consumed after the battle against the Hextor Priests. Let's say that was an average of 1 per person, so 15 servings gone. 213 left.

The next day, the group scouted out the outside of the goblin lair and talked about plans. 3 meals where had by 15 people, so 45 servings removed. 168 remain. Some fruit and mushrooms were found, but these mostly supplemented what was eaten, so no real increase in food sources. More on that later.

That brings us to the current game day. Breakfast was had before going down and confronting the hobgoblins. 15 more servings removed. 153 remain. Crandell was killed, so 14 mouths to feed now. That essentially leaves the group with 11 more meals each. Or almost 4 days of food.

I should point out that this is mostly what is called iron rations. Basically hard biscuits and bread and jerky. Other foods were included initially, fresh fruits and vegetables, but those would have been consumed first as they would rot over time. While Iron Rations will keep you alive, they are not satisfying to eat and you cannot live on them forever. Nor would you want to, so other food sources are needed. That's what those suggesting finding food were getting at. Those fruits and mushrooms talked about earlier helped, but were quickly consumed.

All clear now?

Butternut:

The thrill of the hunt has Butternut's blood up as she stalks silently through the woods. Looping around to get behind him, she employs every trick she has learned over the years to catch the hobgoblin flat-footed and unsuspecting. Stepping close, she drives her shortsword in just below the filthy creature's ribs. He howls in pain and turns to attack, unintentionally twisting her sword so that it carves out a chunk of bloody flesh. As he struggles to draw his own weapon, Butternut slashes deep across his midsection. The hobgoblin gives her a shocked look as his entrails begin to spill out and his blood splashes across the grinning halfling woman; moments later, he collapses to the ground in his death throes.

A sound from across the road attracts her attention to another hobgoblin attempting to light a similar fuse. Before she can switch to her crossbow, an axe that can only be Vernar's hurtles across and embeds itself in the frantic greenskin. Though dazed and badly wounded, that isn't enough to bring it down. However, a couple of thrown daggers join the axe and the foe collapses. Looking in the direction the weapons came from, she sees Ren near Vernar and gives them both an approving thumbs-up.

Now that the excitement appears to be over, everyone gathers around and - as seems to be the habit with this group - begins talking. Ugh. Since nothing interesting is likely to happen for a while, Butternut finds a nearby log to sit on and begins cleaning her nails with one of her daggers.
Vardra wrote:Vardra nods to the dwarven scout.
Kaylessa wrote:“I feel we need to remove the goblins nest from the field. They have supplied the enemy and will continue to do so until they are killed or the enemy wins. Let us strike at the Goblins and the caravan.” She says simply.
Butternut looks up, having heard the soldier's idea and Kaylessa's comment. Several of the others seem in favor as well. "I'm always in favor of killing goblins, and now's a good time for it as they will likely be going to bed soon."
Erisciana wrote:"We've used up some of our spell power and some healing as well, but for the most part we are near full strength," the priestess offers.
"If the caravan is loading, then the resupply force and the goblins would mostly be together in one area. Easy for us to get overwhelmed that way. Seems to me that taking them on in smaller groups is more likely to result in success and our survival than trying to take them all on at once." Most of the rest of the blather is boring, so she goes back to working on her nails.

Post Continued:

April 15th, CR 569

The hobgoblins have been defeated! Although a few did manage to escape leaving two of their number behind to trigger traps hoping to catch the Squads unaware. While many footprints have traveled up the road to Eagle's Nest, Butternut and Flare are able to find only 8 tracks walked away.

The squad gathers together to discuss their options. Flare offers to use his companion, the hawk M'Lady, to scout ahead. The bird could travel faster and cover far more ground than anyone could on foot. While M'Lady is off reconnoitering, Vernar and his scouts will move ahead and watch the road leading up to Eagle's Nest. Another group will go and retrieve the horses from up above, while the rest stand ready in case more enemies appear.
Erisciana wrote:“Wimzy, would you use your healing gifts on Gerett and Flare? They are the most wounded of us.” Turning to Laurel, she will ask, “Do you have any healing remaining?”
“I've got four heals left today,” Wimzy reports, “but I am happy to use them on those in need.” Wimzy heals both Flare and Gerett, restoring both to full health.

When the squads start to split up, Wimzy chases after the group going to get the horses. “I have to see the Crandell's remains,” the halfling priestess reports. “I won't stand to leave him laying on the ground out in the open like that!”

Many of the squad take the time to eat lunch during this downtime.

While the group going after the horses departs, Vernar, Butternut and Ren move ahead a bit further down the road. Not far from where the hobgoblins were slain, the forest narrows much closer to the road, creating a natural bottleneck. The seems to be a good place to keep watch. After a time, Ren moves off to the side and sits down. He dumps all the coins that he collected from the hobgoblin bodies, mostly gold and copper, and starts to count them to pass the time.

Those going back up to the base of Eagle's Nest have some decisions to make as they walk up the winding road. One thing is what to do with all the hobgoblin bodies littering the road. They will need to be moved for the horses to ride past. The area where the Squad fought the enemy hand to hand has the most bodies present.

Where the other group exploded in Alchemist's Fire isn't as cluttered. The force of the blast forced many of them off the road. Several of the bodies still burn. Only a few bodies still remain on the road smoldering.

The fire in the gully has mostly burned itself out by now, but smoke fills the area.

Once reaching the top, Flare, Kendell, and those helping them, move off to round up the horses. Kendell freed them during the initial attack instead of leaving them contained in the rope corral. A few of the horses are still wounded from the earlier arrow barrage. Only one has died, but many others are hurt. There are 22 mounts in all, roughly half being horses and the other half mules.

Wimzy asks for help in laying Crandell to rest. Azrellians prefer cremation as their proper form of burial. After death the immortal spirit is set free to travel into the afterlife. The body left behind is just a soulless husk. Better for it to be purified in fire than run afoul of a necromancer! The halfling priestess will badger Flare, Kendell, Sorvani and Gerett until she gets her way.

While the horses are being gathered, Erisciana and Kaylessa make the trek up to the top of the Eagle's Nest area. Nothing has changed since the squad left it earlier this morning. The pair go up to the observation tower to see what they can of the assault on Fort Graystone many miles away. The view is mostly unchanged. A few more fires are noted, again outside the fort. The battle is simply too far away to make out any specifics.

Finally, the horses are rode back down to the forest where the rest of the squad awaits. M'Lady has yet to return.

“We got treasure!” Ren calls out once everyone is back together. “I count 363 gold and 753 copper coins on those louts. They also had a bunch of cheap jewelry. Some rings, necklaces and bracelets. Might be worth a few gold each, but not much more.”

Not long after that M'Lady glides in and settles on Flare's outstretched arm. “There she is!” Flare happily announces. “What did you see? What? Oh, fine!” Flare fumbles through is pockets and produces a bit of dried rabbit meat.

“She wants to be fed first,” Flare indicates. M'Lady eats her snack while squawking her report.

“There are wagons outside the goblin lair right now!” Flare translates. “Many more creatures like we just fought. A few more of the big ugly things like the one that was killed outside the ramp. Maybe twenty or so. She's not good at counting that high. Looks like they are just about done loading up and are getting ready to head out once more.”

“What about the cider?” Flare demands. “Did you see any cider?” M”Lady squawks her disapproval and then flies off once more.

“Fine!” Flare yells as the hawk flies away. “Be like that!”

GM Notes:

After consuming lunch, 139 servings of food remain.

The hobgoblins had many longswords, longbows and arrows. A few of the tower shields can be claimed if anyone wants them. Several of the horses are too wounded to ride, in Kendell's estimation. He also bandaged and did what he could to close their wounds with Wimzy's help. So a few mules will need to be taken as well. Sann prefers his mule Dolly anyway.

Hit Points:

Butternut – 18 of 21
Erisciana – 17 of 19
Wimzy – 12 of 14

Now what?

Vardra Marcus, PFC:

Many members of the expanded squad put forth their thoughts on what they should do next. There seems to be a roughly even split between those that want to go down into the dwarven fort after the goblins and those who want to would rather stay aboveground and try to hamper the enemy's supply lines. From his perspective, taking out the goblins is a useful step toward cutting the supply line, but others don't seem to see it that way. There are also concerns about making sure they have enough food; with a group this large, what they have won't likely last more that a few days. Vardra scratches his stomach, remembering how hungry he had been when they were lost in the caves. "That's a valid concern, and I agree that we should factor getting food into our plans. If the goblins are supplying the Kelnish army, then there is likely quite a bit of food stored down in Bollo's Shield. How much of it is food we would be interested in eating -- that I don't know."

Lucyus expresses concern that the stone dwarf may have been destroyed; while technically a possibility, Vardra thinks it unlikely considering how long the goblins have been down their and the fact that they hadn't previously managed to so much as scratch it. Still, they have no way of knowing for sure, so Vardra just shrugs.

Flare puts forth an offer to send his avian friend to scout the area. "That's a fine idea, Flare," Vardra says. "Thank you for offering."
Erisciana wrote:She will look around at everyone as she speaks.
Vardra's expression betrays his puzzlement. "Erisciana, it sounds as though you think the goblins will be a tougher opponent than the force sent with the caravan. I'm inclined to think it may be the other way around, especially since we might be able to take the goblins on in smaller groups, whereas we're likely to have to fight the entire supply train at one time. I recall it being suggested previously that they might even include ogres and/or giants in the caravan, which would definitely skew the battle in their favor." From her comments, Butternut seems to feel the same way.

The priestess then asks Wimzy to heal Gerett and Flare, then leaves with part of the group to collect the mounts. Wimzy agrees to the healing, but insists that the sergeant's body must be seen to before they proceed with other plans. "That seems quite appropriate, Wimzy," Vardra says. "Let me know if I can help."

The scouts move a bit further down the road to keep an eye out for any opposition. Vardra will find an opportunity to eat some lunch while they wait for Erisciana and the others to return with the horses. He'll help with Crandell's cremation if Wimzy indicates that his help is wanted.

Eventually everyone returns. Ren seems quite excited.
Ren wrote:“We got treasure!” Ren calls out once everyone is back together. “I count 363 gold and 753 copper coins on those louts. They also had a bunch of cheap jewelry. Some rings, necklaces and bracelets. Might be worth a few gold each, but not much more.”
Vardra whistles in amazement. "That's quite a haul, Ren. I suppose we should add that to the squad's supply fund."

There is a bit of a commotion when M'Lady returns from her aerial scouting. After a bit of back and forth with the bird, Flare is able to provide the news.
Flare wrote:“There are wagons outside the goblin lair right now!” Flare translates. “Many more creatures like we just fought. A few more of the big ugly things like the one that was killed outside the ramp. Maybe twenty or so. She's not good at counting that high. Looks like they are just about done loading up and are getting ready to head out once more.”
Unfortunately, the report isn't entirely clear, other than the part about the supply caravan being there and loading right now. "Wait," Vardra says, concern in his voice. "Flare, did she say there were 'twenty or so' ogres in addition to the hobgoblins, or that the whole group was 'twenty or so'?" He really hopes that it is the latter, as he doubts that they can take on that number of ogres alone, much less with a bunch of hobgoblins as well.

Post by Gerett »

Gerett and the other melee fighters began their way down the slope, keeping their eyes out for remaining enemy archers. Gerett tensed as Lucyus and Vardra stepped on an unstable patch and slid unceremoniously down the slope. Perhaps Gerett's lower center of gravity helped him get safely down. Regardless, it was an unfortunate and embarrassing mishap, but one that could happen to the most skilled fighter. Besides that, it could turn very dangerous if the enemy took advantage. Gerett moved to cover them with his shield the best he could, but it turned out to be unnecessary as the enemy did not respond.
Lucyus wrote:“Strange….They left the field.”
All they could do now was wait for the scouts to report back. Once again the stealthier among them were proving to be invaluable. Gerett hoped the other frontline fighters appreciated this. He was used to being the expeditionary force, underappreciated by the main body of the army. It seemed that the fighters here understood the impact made by the scouting group. Of course, the entire squad was in many ways an expeditionary force on behalf of the army at Greystone. He wondered if Greystone understood how much their small group had done for the fort...not that it mattered.
Lucyus wrote:“Seems to me many a lady tend to like men with bruises and scars.” He says with a shrug, “Why? I haven’t the slightest.”
Gerett chuckled. "By the time a lady is seeing that bruise, he's already passed that hurtle." Gerett paused a moment, remembering some things Lucyus had said and thinking of the paladin's upbringing. There was a fair chance the joke went past him. "Because the bruise is on his bum. So she's already got his pants off...never mind actually. Where's those goblins get off to?"

Eventually the squad all met back up together. The scouts reported disarming some nasty traps, but for now it seemed the danger had passed.
Erisciana wrote:"Now we must decide on our next steps. Or we can fortify this place here, creating defensive positions along the approach and make this into somewhat of a safe haven."
"Fer myself I'd rather not hole up in the outpost with rats beneath our feet. Whether we deal with the infestation first or ride out to complete Crandall's mission doesn't matter to me."
Vardra wrote:I agree that we should ensure that no other enemy are in the area. After that, I think we should go down the back stairway and hit the goblins. If I recall most of the discussion from before, the consensus seemed to be that the supply caravan would probably not arrive until after dark. Gerett nodded. "That seems to be the best timeline to me."
As Wimzy argued the case for cremation, Gerett found himself unsure whether it was Wimzy or Crandell who was Azrellian. "Whatever is done should be what Crandell's kin would do. Not necessarily what any of us would do."

Erisciana, priestess of Ishtar -

Some of the men engage in some light-hearted banter after the falls of Lucyus and Vardra. “Seems to me many a lady tend to like men with bruises and scars.” He says with a shrug, “Why? I haven’t the slightest.”

"Perhaps," Vardra replies uncertainly. "I really wouldn't know. My grandmother always said that there was 'someone for everyone'. I'm just hoping that she was right." From his expression, the soldier doesn't seem sure either way.

The priestess chuckled lightly at the joke, as well as Gerett's need to explain it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The group starts to discuss the next plans. They are relatively healthy and have some magickal abilities remaining. Vardra and Kayless put forward the idea to attack the goblins in the dwarven ruins. Butternut looks up, having heard the soldier's idea and Kaylessa's comment. Several of the others seem in favor as well. "I'm always in favor of killing goblins, and now's a good time for it as they will likely be going to bed soon."

The priestess then comments that they don't know the full situation and their best choice of action will depend on their scouting.

"If the caravan is loading, then the resupply force and the goblins would mostly be together in one area. Easy for us to get overwhelmed that way. Seems to me that taking them on in smaller groups is more likely to result in success and our survival than trying to take them all on at once."

"Oh absolutely I think the goblins, right now, will be a more difficult battle than the force sent with the caravan," Erisci counters. "The goblins are in their 'home', in potentially defensible positions. They have the opportunity to group up and possibly surround us in limited quarters. Also we do not know how many remain. They may have been reinforced since we were there. But mostly, the caverns are without light," she says emphatically.

"Approximately half our number are unable to see in darkness. The spellcasters did not particularly prepare for a battle in darkness either. I feel we would be at a significant disadvantage without specific preparation to make such an assault. But that's not all. We likely have the strength for one more battle this day. If we assault the goblins in their domain and the caravan shows up, that may be too much for us to overcome. Also the goblins do not appear to be going anywhere, at least voluntarily. We may only have one chance to strike the caravan. Ogres or no, that will be the easier fight, and moreso, the more important fight."

------------------------------------------------------------

The groups split up and complete various tasks and eat lightly as they are able. Besides getting the horses, the road needs to be cleared of the dead hobgoblins. "Quickly, move the bodies off the road enough to make a single file path. We can burn them when we return later." The priestess will join in as best as she can, hoping to make as quick work of the macabre task as possible. Fortunately the smoke from the fires caused by the hobgoblins horrible attack has turned darker, indicating that the burning has slowed or stopped. They don't have to deal with putting out a forest fire as well. Erisci will cover her nose and mouth with her gloved hand as they pass closest to the smoky area.

Kendall and Flare ready the mounts, while Kaylessa joins the priestess in a quick jog up and then down the ramp to Eagle's Nest. Fortunately, the siege appears much the same as before. Unfortunately they still were not able to really tell many details from so far away.

Once they return to the group below, Ren indicates a significant bounty of gold coins from the dead hobgoblins. There were a large number of weapons available as well. It is only a few more moments however, when Flare's companion arrives and offers a somewhat unclear report.

Erisci is not certain if the lack of clarity is due to the hawk or Flare's translation. Vardra catches on that as well. "Wait," Vardra says, concern in his voice. "Flare, did she say there were 'twenty or so' ogres in addition to the hobgoblins, or that the whole group was 'twenty or so'?"

"That is certainly an important detail," she will agree. "Can you confirm, Flare? Also does she know how many wagons there were?" Although while the statements were unclear, surely twenty is not also 'a few'. "Assuming that there are twenty-some hobgoblins and several ogres, then our target is obvious. If the caravan is preparing to leave then it will be sufficiently away from the goblin lair, that any reinforcements will not be coming in time. We have the advantage of striking before they know we are there, which gives us an advantage."

Erisci will borrow a dagger and kneel down in the dirt off the side of the road. She starts to sketch a rough plan. "We can attack them with a two pronged strike. First the scouts will advance through the woods and seek to remove any vanguard or advance scouts. An alchemical fire explosion at the front of the procession should stop them from advancing and cause some confusion in their ranks as our main groups hit them from each side. Depending on how spread out they are, they possibly will have a difficult time organizing a coordinated defense. If we strike quickly, between archers, might of arms and spell power, we can carry the day." She looks up at any of those gathered around and smiles. "The timing couldn't be more perfect."

Vernar -

There is a good bit of discussion about plans which Vernar listens intently to, but also notices Butternut's disdain for it. At one point there is contemplation about whether or not the stone dwarf still functions. Given how long it had been there, Vernar has little doubt that the construct still functions. However, there is hardly any need to argue over the possibilities just then.

As the others head back to round up horses and await the return of Flare's companion, Vernar finds a good spot to set up with the scouts to watch each other and the approach. He rummages through his pack to find some hard tack and lukewarm water to wash it down. Once this business is done and we return to civilization, I plan to get a proper meal and as much ale, mead, or anything worth drinking besides this, he muses. His daydreams are soon shattered as everyone meets up again and the hawk returns.
“There are wagons outside the goblin lair right now!” Flare translates. “Many more creatures like we just fought. A few more of the big ugly things like the one that was killed outside the ramp. "Either way, the choice be clear on this," Vernar says. "We need t' be movin' there t' get a look fer ourselves on this mess an' decide upon seein' it." Vernar will gather his things, stuffing them back into his pack and finish getting ready to move depending on what the final orders are.

Small Update:
Gerett wrote:As Wimzy argued the case for cremation, Gerett found himself unsure whether it was Wimzy or Crandell who was Azrellian. "Whatever is done should be what Crandell's kin would do. Not necessarily what any of us would do."
Wimzy smiles mischievously as she regards Gerett.

“This unpleasant task would be so much easier if we knew such information,” Wimzy counters. “Alas we do not, nor can we simply store the body and hope we can transport it back to civilization. It would be disrespectful for us to simply let him lay and rot to become a feast for carrion eaters.”
Vardra wrote:The priestess then asks Wimzy to heal Gerett and Flare, then leaves with part of the group to collect the mounts. "Let me know if I can help.”
“Perhaps you can, Vardra,” Wimzy says, changing her focus towards the much taller human. “As I understand it you are a soldier. What are the armies regulations in regards to what to do with the fallen?”

Later on, M'Lady returns with her scouting report.

“That's what she said,” Flare answers defensively. “She didn't say ogres, she said big ugly thing like around the campfire. Many things like we just fought and some number of big uglies.”

M'Lady flies back in an settles on Flare's arm once more. She squawks some more.

“More big ugly things than big wooden things,” Flare adds confidently.

“Are we really trusting our lives on the reports of a bird and a bird brain?” Malfamata mews to Laurel in agitation.

M'Lady then turns and glares at Malfamata while the cat licks his lips.

Now what?

Kaylessa runs with the others back to the outpost, her feet hitting the ground lightly. The matter of the . hobgoblin bodies comes up and Erisciana says, "Quickly, move the bodies off the road enough to make a single file path. We can burn them when we return later."
“It may be best to do it sooner. As the smoke still rises, they will think it is just circumstance to do it later invites more questions.” She says softly to the priestess.

Kaylessa heads up to the outpost with the priestess. Most of the landscape is the same. There is not any change in the fort. Kaylessa tries to look and see if the flag at the fort has changed or taken down. “I cant help but wonder if the doorway down the path.” Indicating the hidden door. “Would it bring us closer to the caravan.”
Returning to the others, Kaylessa sees Flare’s pet return and she has news.

Apparently there are many hobogoblins and other uglies where the caravan are loading. She sees Erisciana begin to draw into he ground formulating a plan.
“We will have to see about refusing the Alchemist’s fire. I cut them pretty close to the quick so to speak.”She says looking to the others.

Butternut notes Vernar looking in her direction and makes a gesture with one hand like a bird squawking, then rolls her eyes.

With all the talking finally over, Butternut is more than happy to be moving a bit down the road with Ren and Vernar. She stays in the woods to the side of the road, making sure that she has sight-lines to both of her companions. After going a short ways, they stop at a bend in the road where they can see in both directions. Almost immediately, the gnome plops down and begins counting the coins he had looted off the dead hobgobs. "Having fun, Ren?" she asks with a smirk.

While watching the road, Butternut has time to think a bit about all that Alchemist's Fire they collected while she eats some lunch. Looking over at Ren, she asks, "Hey Ren, did you happen to find any spare fuse cord while frisking the dead bodies?"

Returning later to join the rest of the group, Ren brags about all the coinage he collected, which causes Butternut to chuckle. Not much later, Flare's bird returns with news - the enemy caravan is loading right now! Butternut suspects that this will sway the decision regarding their next actions. To her mind, the squad is way too reactive in their decision-making.
Vernar wrote:"Either way, the choice be clear on this," Vernar says. "We need t' be movin' there t' get a look fer ourselves on this mess an' decide upon seein' it." Vernar will gather his things, stuffing them back into his pack and finish getting ready to move depending on what the final orders are.
Butternut nods and takes this as a signal to get ready. Slinging her pack on her back, the halfling woman readies her crossbow and prepares to take point.

So she's already got his pants off...never mind actually. Where's those goblins get off to?"
Hearing Gerett's comment, Vardra turns to the dwarf with a quizzical look. "Actually, it's on my knee, which is why I was limping... unless you were talking about Lucyus..." He trails off, a bit uncertainly.
Gerett wrote:Gerett nodded. "That seems to be the best timeline to me."
Vardra nods to the dwarven warrior. Part of him thinks Gerett should be leading this ragged band, considering that he actually has previous command experience.
Erisciana wrote:"Oh absolutely I think the goblins, right now, will be a more difficult battle than the force sent with the caravan," Erisci counters.

Vardra considers the priestess' words. "You make a good point about the darkness, though I recall seeing quite a few torches up in the Eagle's Nest, and we collected quite a bit of oil up there as well. Making our own light when it suits us may give us an additional advantage. As for being the more important fight, I'm inclined to think that stopping all of the supply runs is more important than stopping one of them. While we clearly disagree, you are welcome to your opinion."
Wimzy wrote:“Perhaps you can, Vardra,” Wimzy says, changing her focus towards the much taller human. “As I understand it you are a soldier. What are the armies regulations in regards to what to do with the fallen?”
A question of what to do with Crandell's body is brought up by the halfling priestess. "Well, the deceased's wishes, if they are known, should be honored. If not, the decision would fall to the commanding officer -- which in this case was Crandell himself. I believe Lucyus and Vernar were the squad's leaders before that, so I guess the decision would fall to them. The army recognizes both burial and cremation as acceptable."

Vernar will gather his things, stuffing them back into his pack and finish getting ready to move depending on what the final orders are.
Unfortunately, M'Lady's report is quite vague in terms of details. Vardra turns to Vernar and nods in agreement. "You're right that we need more information before deciding what to do and how."

Flare talks with his avian friend some more, but the information doesn't become notable clearer. "With no clear answers, we do need to go take a look for ourselves."

Hearing Gerett's comment, Vardra turns to the dwarf with a quizzical look. "Actually, it's on my knee, which is why I was limping... unless you were talking about Lucyus..." He trails off, a bit uncertainly.
Lucyus chuckles softly as he shakes his head and looks at the dwarf. “I wouldn’t know my friend. I think they went that way.” he says to the dwarf with a ughem cough.
While sharpening his axe, Lucyus hears the conversation of Wimzy, Vardra and Gerret regarding the remains of the Sgt.
A question of what to do with Crandell's body is brought up by the halfling priestess. "Well, the deceased's wishes, if they are known, should be honored. Rising up he looks at the priestess and the soldier, “I do not presume to speak for the Sgt. Only for what is best for him and us. Cremation is probably best. We do not have the time to dig a grave nor would we want our good sgt to be raised by a necromancer or fed on by carron creatures. As Erisciana lays out her plan Lucyus takes it in. As the others debate what to do, he speaks up. “Let us set up as Erisciana has stated. It is a sound plan. If we decide it is wise to strike out then we shall if not then we can retreat into he woods. This hawk has done us a service but we need to know more. By setting up for the attack we can be ready and if our opportunity has passed then it was for naught, ut if it is still there, We have a chance to give out forces a reprieve.”

Erisciana, priestess of Ishtar -

While the group discusses their initial thoughts on how to proceed, Erisciana catches Butternut's mocking gesture. A frown forms on the priestess' face, but she says nothing, putting aside the rude reaction.

The priestess purses her lips a moment before responding. "Your inference is incorrect. I never stated that I wanted to stop only the caravan and not destroy the goblin outpost. Removal of the goblin threat is absolutely my intent. It is a matter of properly identifying priority targets. Both the caravan and the goblins are critical targets. However, the caravan is more accessible and the risk to us is lower. Attacking the caravan does not preclude us from attacking the goblins next, but the transitive statement may not be true."

Torches are a rather unreliable method to circumvent the darkness problem. One cannot hold a torch and cast spells, or wield a shield, or shoot arrows. This makes the goblin lair a less accessible target given our current condition." She pauses for a moment to consider her thoughts.

"By attacking the caravan, we know where the goblins are. Attacking the goblins, we may not know where the caravan is located. That makes us more vulnerable. Becoming embroiled in a fight in the caverns without full knowledge of the location of the caravan does not guarantee we stop that caravan and puts us at risk of more enemies with which to deal."

"It is a simple logic problem. The strategic plan is to deny the siege from receiving supplies. There is an imminent caravan. Defeat the caravan guards and the enemy does not receive supplies. Then we can deal with the goblins when we are rested and at full strength. The enemy is then denied all supplies from this source. Reversing the order simply does not guarantee the same results."

-------------------------------------------------

Erisciana directs those with her to help move the bodies aside. “It may be best to do it sooner. As the smoke still rises, they will think it is just circumstance to do it later invites more questions,” Kaylessa says softly to the priestess.

"I don't think we are hiding our presence from the enemy. They just sent about 100 regular troops to eliminate us. At the moment, we need to find out where that caravan is located."

"You may very well be right. We should scout out the area when we have a chance to see what advantages that exit may have for us."

------------------------------------------------

After the scouting report from Flare's aerial companion is delivered, there remains a lack of clarity. “That's what she said,” Flare answers defensively. “She didn't say ogres, she said big ugly thing like around the campfire. Many things like we just fought and some number of big uglies.”

The description changed from the first rendition to the second. From 'the one killed outside the cave' to 'like around the campfire'. A subtle yet important difference. Not being sure whether the confusion was from Flare's translation or the bird's information, it actually was not as important as the location of the caravan and their relative numbers. They now had a chance to stop the caravan.

As the priestess roughly sketched out a basic initial plan for attacking the enemy, Kaylessa mentions the condition of the alchemist fire traps. She sees Erisciana begin to draw into the ground formulating a plan. “We will have to see about refusing the Alchemist’s fire. I cut them pretty close to the quick so to speak,” she says looking to the others.

"Understood," Erisci responds. "See if Ren can help you with that task. They would prove very useful in evening the odds and creating general mayhem in the enemy ranks."

A general agreement on what steps to take next takes shape. As Erisciana lays out her plan Lucyus takes it in. As the others debate what to do, he speaks up, “Let us set up as Erisciana has stated. It is a sound plan. If we decide it is wise to strike out then we shall if not then we can retreat into the woods. This hawk has done us a service but we need to know more. By setting up for the attack we can be ready and if our opportunity has passed then it was for naught, but if it is still there, we have a chance to give our forces a reprieve.”

"Either way, the choice be clear on this," Vernar says. "We need t' be movin' there t' get a look fer ourselves on this mess an' decide upon seein' it." Vernar will gather his things, stuffing them back into his pack and finish getting ready to move depending on what the final orders are.

"Good, then we seem to be in some agreement. Vernar, our main group will trail a short distance behind your scouts. Let us know when you make contact. And everyone remember, there are at least a handful of hobgoblins who may be in the vicinity and seek to ambush us."

Erisci will mount up on her trusty black roan. The distance to the goblin lair is roughly an hour and a half. A little less than that as they have already come down the winding road. If the caravan was leaving soon, they should be at least thirty minutes from the goblin lair when they make contact, given a somewhat stealthy advance. Far enough away to not draw the goblins themselves into the fight. "Perhaps we will be able to use the location we scouted out yesterday to deliver our attack," she says as she rides next to Lucyus. "I think we should take advantage of Gerett's experience and have him lead one half of the attack. Give us a chance to see him in action."

Erisci will drop back to ride alongside the dwarven fighter. "We may not have time to alter our plan when contact is made with the caravan. Assuming we are able to use our two-pronged attack, you take Sorvani, Vardra, Wimzy and Sann and go to the left as we approach. The scouts will let us know when the proper time to strike will be."

Lucyus gathers up his gear and gives thanks to those that return with the horses. As he mounts up he takes some dry rations and begins eating it on the way. A few moments later Erisciana rides up next to him.

For several moments, Lucyus remains quiet, letting the words soak in. His mind racing, . Have I done something wrong? Sure there were many wounded but no one died. Except for Butternut who seems to get herself into more trouble then fox in a hen house.
His pride getting the better of him he asks the Priestess, “I am assuming my skills of leading my group are in question? He ask his eyes the blue of the ocean when a storm strikes. “Are my methods that horrible? Surely not.” He asks as he questions some of his training. “None have died on my watch, surely some wounded but that is to be expected.” He says more to himself than the priestess. With a deep breath, Lucyus looks about for a moment unsure then looks back at the priestess. “If it is for the good of the group then, so be it. Yet where would I fit into our plan? Would I follow you or Gerret?” knowing full well he is not the quietest of the bunch.

The group moves out, with the scouts leading the way some distance ahead. Riding along next to Lucyus, they discuss the potential upcoming attack. However, when she suggests they consider Gerett 'taking lead' on one prong of the attack in order to see how he responds to the opportunity, the paladin looks like she had struck him a blow.

He is quiet for a moment and she lets him gather his thoughts before continuing, but looks on concerned. His pride getting the better of him he asks the Priestess, “I am assuming my skills of leading my group are in question?" His eyes turn the dark blue of the ocean when a storm strikes.

Erisci will smile briefly. "Certainly not," she says simply, allowing him to continue. An unexpected response, the priestess thinks to herself. In more ways than one.

“Are my methods that horrible? Surely not,” he asks, as he questions some of his training. “None have died on my watch, surely some wounded but that is to be expected,” he says more to himself than the priestess. With a deep breath, Lucyus looks about for a moment unsure, then looks back at the priestess. “If it is for the good of the group, then so be it. Yet where would I fit into our plan? Would I follow you or Gerett?” knowing full well he is not the quietest of the bunch.

Erisci nudges her blue roan closer to the prideful paladin as they ride. She observes Lucyus a moment or two before responding. "I was not presuming to question your methods or the success we have had," the priestess begins. "Are all followers of Heironeous so prideful? It can be an advantage and a disadvantage most certainly." She smiles reassuringly at the warrior-priest. "My suggestion was meant to gauge the ability of Gerett, not a condemnation of your own ability. We are not a strict military unit, despite what some people may think. We may need to operate in small groups and we need to know who works well together and who can properly take charge, when needed."

She rides along a little longer, considering her next words. "This attack will have all groups still in close proximity. If all goes well, then we have gained some knowledge which may help us in the future. If it does not, then we will be close enough to 'jump in', as it were. We'll take Kendall, Flare and Laurel to our side and Gerett can organize the remaining four. Is that agreeable?"

Gerett took in the new information about the newly departing caravan and ruminated on it while the others discussed. This was a good opportunity, and a good use of the rest of their day. Stop the caravan, probe the remaining strength of the enemy, redeem their time, then return to Eagle's Nest to rest before the more difficult task of rooting out the rats in the cellar.

"Aye," he said. "We should get ahead of the caravan and get into position so we can attack if it's opportune. But we all go in with the understanding that if it's too much to handle, we let it pass. That way we keep ourselves alive to deal with the source of the shipments below, tomorrow."

The group mounted up and began to make distance from the mountain, to ensure that when the caravan was engaged, the goblins under the mountain could not reinforce. Once again Erisciana caught Gerett by surprise as she recommended him for leadership. His first response, as usual, was to grumble.

"Seems we've got a lot of leaders here already..." Catching himself, he tried to circumvent coming across too negatively. "Then again, it only took one arrow to cut our number of leaders down pretty quickly. I certainly can do it, if everyone's agreed. If we're not agreed, we can continue as we were.

"If we're going to split into two groups, we just need to make sure each group can operate independently without second guessing what the other is doing. Tha' way I see it, when we've got eyes on the enemy we can decide whether it's something we should handle. But if each group decides that on their own, we might not all attack at once. Which is bad. So if the scouts are getting first eyes, we need to make sure they're authorized to make that decision fer all of us, and that they are able to send a signal to the other two groups for yea or nay.

"Same ways, if we get stuck in, we need one person set to make the decision that we're in over our heads and call the retreat. We should be in a position to do so--they aren't like ta leave tha' wagons ta pursue us.

Erisciana, priestess of Ishtar -

The group decides to move out and engage the caravan. Scouts will try to determine the composition of the enemy and whether they are susceptible to attack. Flare's bird was helpful in its scouting but ultimately less than clear on details.

"Aye," Gerett said. "We should get ahead of the caravan and get into position so we can attack if it's opportune. But we all go in with the understanding that if it's too much to handle, we let it pass. That way we keep ourselves alive to deal with the source of the shipments below, tomorrow."

"Oh absolutely. I believe we agreed on that contingency yesterday when the plans for this delayed attack were first discussed. This is a fine opportunity to strike a blow, but not worth selling our lives to accomplish," the priestess concurred.

Despite the unintended blow to Lucyus' pride, Erisciana has suggested that Gerett take the point on one of the prongs of attack on the enemy caravan. The suggestion appeared to catch Gerett off guard and he was surprisingly adverse to the idea. At first.

"We do not really have time for a quorum or committee meeting. The caravan is less than an hour and a half from us and moving toward us. Your team will follow you as the point... person. We are lower on Sleep magickal spells than I would like in this instance, but the scouts have several at their disposal. We should coordinate to hit a focused area of the caravan. With large and deadly enemies, it is better to strike and kill a few at a time rather than do damage to many all at once."

"Anyway, we need ta' decide on who's making these calls and how they are tellin' 'em to the rest of us."

"You are of course, correct in your assessment," Erisci responds. "Vernar's group will be the ones to make first contact and determine the viability of this attack. Ideally we will reach a point where we can set the ambush from a static position rather than moving into it and having to attack on the move. If we can set an ambush, then an alchemical fire explosion in front of the caravan will be a suitable signal to engage. Otherwise, we may have to rely upon Vernar's ample vocal skills or some other suitable signal. I trust that Vernar maintains a suitable balance between caution and recklessness. Perhaps a tad towards the cautious side."

"I will take the call on whether to retreat. A close combat individual may not have a full view of the combat. I have no intention of getting caught in a battle that we cannot win. You may need to discuss further with Vernar his intentions in case we do make contact unexpectedly."

The young priestess follows along the group listening as the group decides what needs to be done next. Not feeling particularly useful she looks to see if Malf is about. They covered quite a bit of distance in their foray with the hobgoblins and she knows how utterly lost she would be in these woods. But cats are interesting creatures and usually able to stay out of trouble and find their way home. Her attention is arrested by a question from Erisciana:
Erisciana wrote:“Wimzy, would you use your healing gifts on Gerett and Flare? They are the most wounded of us.” Turning to Laurel, she will ask, “Do you have any healing remaining?”
Wimzy wrote:“I've got four heals left today,” Wimzy reports, “but I am happy to use them on those in need.” Wimzy heals both Flare and Gerett, restoring both to full health.
The young woman will nod, allowing the halfling to speak first. Then brushing her long, black hair out of her face she pipes up, "I have one spell left for the day."
Erisciana wrote:“I will take Kendall, Sorvani, Flare, Gerett and Kaylessa to collect and bring down all of our horses. Vernar, you may want to set up a forward screen in the trees with your scouts in case the enemy finds their bravery again.”
Laurel will look about the group as Erisciana departs with no orders for her. Unsure what to do she'll assist in looting and moving bodies as much as her small, unmuscled frame allows. All the while keeping an eye out for that stupid cat!
Ren wrote:“We got treasure! I count 363 gold and 753 copper coins on those louts. They also had a bunch of cheap jewelry. Some rings, necklaces and bracelets. Might be worth a few gold each, but not much more.”
Vardra wrote:"That's quite a haul, Ren. I suppose we should add that to the squad's supply fund."
Laurel agrees, if they ever got back to civilization again having some money to buy some proper food for the group would be a good thing. Her mouth still felt dry from the sad hardtack that comprised her afternoons sustenance. Not long after a hawk rejoins the group and Flare calls out,
Flare wrote: “There she is! What did you see? What? Oh, fine! She wants to be fed first,"
Laurel smiles wryly. This was familiar to her, Malfamata often requested treats when he acquiesced to a request. However most of his were ridiculous. A goldfish from the palace pond was above of her pay grade!
Flare wrote:“There are wagons outside the goblin lair right now! Many more creatures like we just fought. A few more of the big ugly things like the one that was killed outside the ramp. Maybe twenty or so. She's not good at counting that high. Looks like they are just about done loading up and are getting ready to head out once more.“What about the cider? Did you see any cider? Fine! Be like that!””
Laurel lets out a small giggle about the odd request before quickly forcing a stoic visage as Vardra speaks up,
Vardra wrote:"Wait, Flare, did she say there were 'twenty or so' ogres in addition to the hobgoblins, or that the whole group was 'twenty or so'
Laurel looks to Flare again, that was a good question. She really doesn't think that they could kill 20 ogres. It was sheer luck that the one had died so quickly earlier this morning.
Erisciana wrote:"That is certainly an important detail, Can you confirm, Flare? Also does she know how many wagons there were? Assuming that there are twenty-some hobgoblins and several ogres, then our target is obvious. If the caravan is preparing to leave then it will be sufficiently away from the goblin lair, that any reinforcements will not be coming in time. We have the advantage of striking before they know we are there, which gives us an advantage.""
Vernar wrote:"Either way, the choice be clear on this, We need t' be movin' there t' get a look fer ourselves on this mess an' decide upon seein' it."
Vardra wrote: "You're right that we need more information before deciding what to do and how."
Flare wrote:“That's what she said, She didn't say ogres, she said big ugly thing like around the campfire. Many things like we just fought and some number of big uglies. More big ugly things than big wooden things,
Malfamata wrote:“Are we really trusting our lives on the reports of a bird and a bird brain?”
The young priestess perks up at the familiar voice, "Well, do you have some information we don't?" She retorts to the cat, "Where have you been?"

Crandell is laid to rest:

The squads relax having bested the enemy force sent to take Eagle's Nest. They've split up to cover a multitude of tasks.

Wimzy brings up the question of properly dealing with Sergeant Crandell's body. She does not want to leave it lying out in the open subject to predators and the elements. Azrellians prefer to cremate their remains as it prevents necromancers from using the body.
Vardra wrote:A question of what to do with Crandell's body is brought up by the halfling priestess.
“Thank you, Vardra,” Wimzy says in response.
Lucyus wrote:Rising up he looks at the priestess and the soldier, “I do not presume to speak for the Sgt. Only for what is best for him and us. Cremation is probably best. We do not have the time to dig a grave nor would we want our good Sgt to be raised by a necromancer or fed on by carrion creatures. Say a few words of the man and cast your blessing to his patron or to whom you pray. It is better than the enemy will get.”

If Lucyus comes across as mean or harsh it is because he is being frank. “He died an honorable and quick death. His kin is not here nor do we know he has any. Let the fire of Azrella cleanse and free his soul.”
“Well said, Lucyus of Heironeous,” Wimzy says. “Alright, boys! Lets get to work!”

Sorvani uses the pit made for the fire from a few nights ago to build a fire to cremate Crandell's remains. His food and water are removed from the body, along with some coins and weapons. Once the fire is roaring, Wimzy will recite the Azrellian prayer for when one has passed on. Its a mournful tale of passing from this world and into the next.

Further down the hillside, Butternut approaches Ren.
Butternut wrote:While watching the road, Butternut has time to think a bit about all that Alchemist's Fire they collected while she eats some lunch. Looking over at Ren, she asks, "Hey Ren, did you happen to find any spare fuse cord while frisking the dead bodies?"
“Some,” the gnome reports. “We should have plenty of fuse cord to use and at least a dozen pots of Alchemist's Fire. Should be fun!”

Later on, the entire squad comes back together to discuss their options. Flare's hawk, M'Lady, returns with her report from her aerial scouting. It seems the caravan is down at the goblin lair right now and will be heading out soon. The hawk spotted what is guessed to be more hobgoblins and around 20 ogres as well!

Malfamata, Laurel's pet cat is dubious of the hawk's report.
Laurel wrote:The young priestess perks up at the familiar voice, "Well, do you have some information we don't?" She retorts to the cat, "Where have you been?"
“No, of course not,” the car mews to Laurel. It said that followers of Felix can communicate with cats as felines are that powers holy companion. Everyone else just hears a cat meowing. “I'm just saying that the bird is nowhere near as smart as I am. It's like asking a rock for directions.”

“As for where I've been,” the cat continues, “I've been keeping safe and following you down the hill. Grow me wings and I'd happily go off scouting!”

Moving on:

Its been decided that more information is needed before the squad can settle on their next move. If the caravan is getting ready to move, the intercepting it away from the goblin lair seems prudent. Assuming the report of 20 ogres with it is wrong.

The scouts lead the way down the hill, going slowly so as to not miss any other traps or surprises left behind by the enemy. This caution slows the group down, but in spite of this they reach where the road forks and there is no caravan in sight. Nothing unexpected is found.

Butternut and Flare check the road and can find many footprints and wheel tracks from numbers wagons. Maybe a dozen wagons or so. Everything is so trampled down its hard to be sure.

The squads take the road that leads to the goblin lair. The scouts continue to ride further ahead. Finally, they start to reach the area where they had scouted before and something is noted on the road further ahead. The squad dismounts and moves the horses and mules off into the woods along the road.

The first wagon of the caravan comes into view! But it is not a typical wagon like humans are known to use. While it has the basic features, an elevated deck supported by four wheels to carry cargo, a seat in front for a driver and a place to secure mounts to pull the wagon, there are other features as well. Instead of a cloth or tarp cover to keep out the rain, a solid roof top has been built on this wagon. A waist high wall has been added around this roof to keep the occupants from falling off. On top of this roof is a pair of hobgoblin archers keeping watch. Two more hobgoblin's are seated down below controlling the mounts.

But that's not the most extraordinary thing about this unusual wagon. Its not pulled by a pair of horses, or oxen or other similar four legged critters. No, this wagon is being pulled by a pair of ogres in harness!

Gm Notes:

Yes, the ogres are pulling the wagons! A total of three wagons can be seen from the squads current vantage point. Each of these wagons is like the first and is being pulled by a pair of ogres. They also have the elevated archery platform with two hobgoblins up there.

Hit Points:

Butternut – 18 of 21
Erisciana – 17 of 19
Wimzy – 12 of 14

Here is a map of the immediate area. It is a reworking of the earlier map.

The road goes down the middle of the map. To either side of the road is an area of dirt and rocks. The dark gray are large rocks that could be used to hide behind. The green is the woods and the dark brown circles are the tree trunks. Lastly, the three brown squares are the wagons on the road. The squad is at the bottom of the map right now and out of sight. The squares on the map are 5'.

Now what?

"Good, then we seem to be in some agreement. Vernar, our main group will trail a short distance behind your scouts. Let us know when you make contact. And everyone remember, there are at least a handful of hobgoblins who may be in the vicinity and seek to ambush us."
Vernar simply nods, as nothing else needs to be said. He knows Butternut is more than ready to go at this point, so he rounds up Ren and Kaylessa and they head out, maintaining enough of a lead from the rest of the group. While they travel, Vernar keeps an eye out for any hobgoblin stragglers, but does not see any.

"This be good fortune fer us, the ogres be used as wagon team means we be cuttin' 'em down 'fore they be gettin' those harnesses off," Vernar says quietly with a wide grin.

"Kaylessa, I be needin' you t' report back t' Erisciana 'bout this an' our plan t' engage. Ren, Butternut an' I'll be settin' up some alchemist fire traps a bit down this road," a wicked gleam is seen in Vernar's eye as he lays out the plan. "Let the main group know t' hit 'em when the first wagon goes boom."

Once Kaylessa heads out, Vernar will turn to Ren and Butternut, "Okay, we need t' be getting' these traps set so that the first wagon is destroyed by the trap an' they cannot be proceedin' further down the road while we be cuttin' 'em down from both sides o' the road. I want us t' set up on the opposite side that the main group will be attackin' from. The main targets be the archers."

Unless there are any questions or amendments to the plan, Vernar will work with Ren and Butternut to set up the traps and prepare to engage.

Popping some nuts in her mouth and chewing them she gets up from where she was sitting. Gathering up her equipment Kaylessa follows Vernar and the other scouts keeping a watchful out as they proceed.

“Be sure to set your fuses well, my friend. We would not want any accidents to befall you,” she says to the others, as she takes out the Alchemist’s fire that she was carrying. “I’ll be back with the cavalry shortly.” Kaylessa will leave when she has a sound idea where the others are setting the traps.

Retracing her steps, she directs her mount towards the remainder of their force. Spotting them Kaylessa asks them to stop for a moment as she pulls up the reigns. “The caravan is on it’s way. They are not normal wagons,” she says as she describes the 3 wagons in detail. “And they are not pulled by beasts of burden, but Ogres. Vernar plans to blast the Alchemist’s fire taking out the Ogres before they can detach from their harnesses. There are also Hobogoblin archers that loom above the wagons.”

“I have a rough idea where Vernar plans to strike but I fear they could be over run before the Alchemist’s fire takes it’s toll,” she says looking at the priestess then the others.

Erisicana, priestess of Ishtar -

The group rides on with the scouts leading the way ahead some distance. Further down the road there is some faint noise but it is difficult to tell how far. As they begin to get close to the place where they had scouted out an ambush the day before, Kaylessa comes out of the forest and ushers them to the trees. Erisci will wave everyone over to the right hand side of the road and out of sight.

“The caravan is on it’s way. They are not normal wagons,” Kaylessa says as she describes the 3 wagons in detail. “And they are not pulled by beasts of burden, but Ogres. Vernar plans to blast the Alchemist’s fire taking out the Ogres before they can detach from their harnesses. There are also Hobogoblin archers that loom above the wagons.”

The priestess raises her eyebrows briefly in surprise that the ogres are the wagon teams. "That explains why there are close to twenty. That also means there are approximately ten wagons. We have our work cut out for us this day, my friends," she says as she looks around at the others, a grim look settling on her beautiful features.

“I have a rough idea where Vernar plans to strike but I fear they could be over run before the Alchemist’s fire takes its toll,” she says looking at the priestess then the others.

"Not to worry." The priestess considers for a brief moment. There is no time for discussion or debate. Based on Vernar's plan, an idea quickly forms. "We don't have much time if the enemy is within sight range. Go on up ahead and let Vernar know we will be ready when he signals. Remind the spellcasters to use Magickal Missiles on the ogres and Sleep on the hobgoblins. We also need someone to focus on killing the sleeping hobgoblins during the fight as we may need to retreat before we can slay them all. Our groups will account for the first three wagons," she says indicating the others here. "Your group can start to engage further enemy at range. Go and strike well!"

Erisci will turn to the rest of the group. "Quickly tie off your horses back here," leading them to a suitable spot a few paces back from where Kaylessa met them. Gerett, take your group up this side and try to go past the point where Vernar is setting his ambush. Focus firstly on the second wagon beyond the explosion." She looks at the rest of that group (Sorvani, Vardra, Sann and Wimzy). "Stay in sight of each other. Defeat one group of ogres and hobgoblins before trying to engage the next. If you need to retreat, everyone goes together and we rendezvous here. We will try to do as much damage as we can to the enemy before we have to break off. Good luck!"

The priestess ushers them off, then leads the rest of the squad forward at a slightly slower pace. Speaking over her shoulder, she says to the remainder, "We'll get as close as we can to the first explosion. Once it goes off, we will cross to the other side and begin our attack." (OOC: If we are able to cross the road here without being seen, then we will do that now and move up on the left side of the road in the woods.)

"Lucyus and Kendall, we'll be responsible for the first two wagons. If the explosions do not kill the lead ogres, one of you will need to deal with them. Then engage the next pair. Flare, we need you to primarily target the hobgoblins on top of the wagons. Work your way down the line as you can but don't move too far ahead of the rest of us. Laurel, if you're willing, any hobgoblins that are incapacitated either from explosions or spells need to be killed. We may not have the luxury of defeating the entire enemy and I don't want to have to face any in the future unnecessarily. Save your healing for triage."

"Once the first three wagons are dealt with, I doubt any plan will survive contact with the enemy. If we can take them down in small groups, that is ideal. If they fully consolidate, we retreat. May Ishtar, Hieroneous, Felix and Ehlonna all look favorably on us this day!" Erisciana does not look nervous or afraid. She has a confidence about her, born of fighting with these people.

The priestess considers casting Softening Earth, but decides they made need the healing power that spell holds instead. Once the initial explosion goes off, Erisci will cast her Sleep spell from the trees at the closest wagons that have not been hit by the explosions, the area of effect being large enough to cover two wagons. After that, it will entirely depend on the situation that moment!

(What a glorious, epic battle this could be!)

Lucyus
Erisci will smile briefly. "Certainly not," she says simply, allowing him to continue. An unexpected response, the priestess thinks to herself. In more ways than one.
Lucyus makes a face of confusion that quickly passes as he brings a draught from his waterskin.
“It is just strange to relieve one with another in the middle of a battle, unless by death or stupidity.” He adds with a ghost of a smile. “Some more than others I am afraid. It is the same for most people I would think.”
“Oh well why didn’t you say so in the first place!” he says eyeing the priestess. “It is wise see what our strengths and weaknesses are, as well as how to use them.
“It is agreeable. If it is for the good of our group, I am open to it. Just know if the need to step in is there, I will do so.” He says simply.
“I am agreeable to it. I wish you luck, my friend. If you need anything you only need ask.”
Laurel seems to have a staring match at her feline friend. He cannot help but wonder how far their bond goes or is it like M’lady and Flare as simple friendship.
"Lucyus and Kendall, we'll be responsible for the first two wagons. If the explosions do not kill the lead ogres, one of you will need to deal with them. Then engage the nay ext pair.
“To what ever end we will see it through.” He says simply.
Lucyus will be ready to move into battle. Before they do he will cast protection from evil upon Kendell. If There is wounded ogres, Lucyus will throw his spear at the wounded ogre then close into melee bringing his battle ax and shield into the fray.

Kaylessa

Having been sent away, Kaylessa moves through the woods towards the scouts as she does so she knocks an arrow to her bow and holds it there with her bow arm, keeping her other free. Once with the scouts she will take up position for cover and wait for the fireworks to begin.
If the hobgoblins survive the initial burrage, Kaylessa will cast a magic missile at the humanoids.

Butternut:
Ren wrote:“Some,” the gnome reports. “We should have plenty of fuse cord to use and at least a dozen pots of Alchemist's Fire. Should be fun!”
"Seems we have a bit of a pyromaniac in the group," Butternut says, raising one eyebrow at the gnome.

Laurel's cat reappears after M'Lady returns. Interested, Butternut watches the interaction between the two. It's clear that they have a more than usual relationship, and seem to be able to communicate directly.
Kaylessa wrote:Apparently there are many hobogoblins and other uglies where the caravan are loading. She sees Erisciana begin to draw into he ground formulating a plan.
“We will have to see about refusing the Alchemist’s fire. I cut them pretty close to the quick so to speak.”She says looking to the others.
Erisciana wrote:"Understood," Erisci responds. "See if Ren can help you with that task. They would prove very useful in evening the odds and creating general mayhem in the enemy ranks."
Butternut looks up at the mention of fuses for the vials they collected. "Ren told me that he found a fair bit of fuse cord when he was checking the bodies, so that should help." Turning, she waves the gnome over to join them. "Ren, can we see how much fuse you collected?"

Butternut is pleased to be moving again. She and the other scouts follow the road down the hill toward the cutoff to Bollo's Shield. She travels through the woods parallel to the road and searches for any sign of traps or where the last few remaining hobgobs went.

Eventually they reach the fork. She and Flare search around a bit, examining the tracks. Due to number of footprints, it is hard to get a good read. Walking over to Vernar, she says, "The tracks are pretty messy and not terribly fresh. Looks like a fair number of sets of footprints, both normal size and larger ones. There's also wagon tracks, perhaps as many as a dozen or so, though no obvious horse tracks. Hard to be sure."

The decision is made to continue on toward the dwarven outpost. As they approach the area that had been scouted the previous day, Butternut spots movement at the far limit of vision. She signals to Vernar, indicating that they need to stop and that someone is approaching from the other direction. Butternut dismounts and guides Zephyr out of the immediate danger zone and ties his lead to a low-hanging tree branch.

Returning to the edge of the road, Butternut positions herself for a good look. Soon, wagons begin to roll into view. Each wagon has partial walls, and a solid roof. A pair of hobgoblin archers can be seen on the roof of each wagon. Most intriguingly, the wagons are pulled not by horses or donkeys, but by ogres! After a moment of surprise, Butternut focuses on getting a good look at the harnesses that they are using. It could be very bad if the ogres can just throw them off; fortunately, that doesn't appear to be the case.

"Vernar," Butternut whispers. "I see three wagons so far. Two archers on top of each, and pulled by ogres. Luckily, the ogres seems to be strapped into the wagon harnesses, so I don't think they can get loose easily. If we're going to do something, it's going to have to be quick. Otherwise, we'll need to pull back."
Vernar wrote:Once Kaylessa heads out, Vernar will turn to Ren and Butternut, "Okay, we need t' be getting' these traps set so that the first wagon is destroyed by the trap an' they cannot be proceedin' further down the road while we be cuttin' 'em down from both sides o' the road. I want us t' set up on the opposite side that the main group will be attackin' from. The main targets be the archers."
Vernar sends Kaylessa to fill in the rest of the squad, then proposes setting up the fire traps. "Got it," Butternut replies. She works with Ren to get the vials set up on either side of the road so they can hit the first wagon or two from both sides. As the wagons continue to draw closer, she finds herself a spot to set up behind a stump just off the road. She loads her crossbow, then sets it aside and readies her flint and steel to light the end of the fuse by her foot. She looks to Vernar for the signal to light it.

Say a few words of the man and cast your blessing to his patron or to whom you pray. It is better than the enemy will get.”
If Lucyus comes across as mean or harsh it is because he is being frank. “He died an honourable and quick death. His kin is not here nor do we know he has any. Let the fire of Azrella cleanse and free his soul.”
"You're welcome, Wimzy," Vardra says in reply to the halfling priestess. Lucyus then speaks up and he nods in agreement with the paladin's words. "We didn't know him long, but he seemed a good man. Well said." The soldier helps with the preparations for the Sergeant's cremation, as directed by Wimzy. When she delivers her eulogy, he bows his head respectfully.

It is not long before they mount up and head for the dwarven supply depot. Vardra greets Forelock warmly and gives her a bite to eat before climbing into the saddle. The ride to the fork in the road takes over an hour. By the time most of the squad has arrived, the scouts have already surveyed the tracks. Based on the tracks, the caravan includes a sizeable contingent and a number of wagons. Unfortunately, the tracks are numerous and hard for even the trained woodsmen to read. Vardra has misgivings about their small team taking on so many more enemy, but the others seem determined to push ahead. He says a quick prayer to Heironeous for the squad's protection and forges on.

As they approach the spot that the squad had explored the previous day, Vardra becomes aware that he has been assigned to a team to be led by Garrett. He guides Forelock up next to the dwarf's mount. "It will be good serving with you, Garett. When the time comes, I will be honored to follow your lead."

Soon, Kaylessa returns with a report of the scouts' findings. It seems the caravan is already returning, and the wagons are being pulled by ogres rather than horses! That explains the large number of ogres. He can only hope that they won't be able to free themselves from the yokes quickly; if they do, this could well turn into a very grim and one-sided battle indeed. "This is dire news indeed, Kaylessa," Vardra says. Dismounting and readying his sword and shield, he turns to Gerett. "I am ready, my friend. Give the word."

Erisciana wrote:"We do not really have time for a quorum or committee meeting.

Satisfied with Erisciana's plan for engagement and retreat (if needed), Gerett turned to Sorvani, Whimzy, Vardra, and Sann in turn for a quick conference while there was still time.

Whimzy:

Whimzy had always been polite to Gerett and had assisted him with healing powers before. She was an oddity to him, almost childlike in enthusiasm but not at all averse to violence. He did not pretend to try to understand the application of her powers, but simply reviewed with her what he had discussed with Erisciana. "We must fully commit to the attack once begun," he stated, "but be ready to retreat at a moment's notice. Even disabling one wagon will suffice if we can get away unscathed. Position yourself where you can work best with me and the other three in our group, and keep your ears open for a call to charge or retreat."

Sorvani:

"I'm afraid I haven't gotten to know you very well thus far," Gerett began as he reintroduced himself to the mage. "I'm no expert or even a novice in your glamour-craft, but I'd at least like to know what you've got on hand for this next fight." Gerett was able to gather that Sorvani still had the ability to induce Sleep and to send out a deadly bolt of energy, both spells he had witnessed from the others already. "You know best how to apply your spells. It's my understanding that Sleep is more effective on little guys and your missiles can hurt the ogres we expect to see. In any case, we're going to try to bring down any ogres we see one at a time, as fast as possible. Any goblins would be best kept out of the fight while we do that. UIse your judgment and stick as close to us as you can while staying out of danger. The caravan might have scouts riding out around at a distance."

Vardra:

Gerett and Vardra were well acquainted at this point, and Gerett knew he could rely on the soldier's bravery, reasonableness, and intelligence. "Ye and I are both skilled in melee and range," he stated. "Whether we stick at a distance or close is going ta depend on the situation. Sorvani and Whimzy will be behind us either way. So we both stay at range or we both go in together, as things demand." This was enough of a briefing, he decided. "I know I can count on you; I'm just going to check in with the others."

Sann:

Lastly Gerett approached the historian. "I'm a bit ashamed to admit I know very little about ye, Sann. Aside from the fact that your knowledge o' the keep and its history has saved our collective necks a few times. Where do ye prefer to be in the fight? Vardra and I will be switching between range and melee as needed. Let me know where ye can fight best and we'll work on getting ye there."

The group made it to the ambush point before the enemy, but only barely. Vernar informed them of a unique setup with ogres pulling custom wagons with hard tops carrying goblin archers like some sort of palanquin. This would hopefully make the ogres easier to deal with, but the archers on top could be a problem if they were allowed to molest the attackers from above. The scouts would only just barely have time to lay any traps before the group was upon them--action was needed quickly.

Erisciana made the decision to begin the attack, and Gerett was assigned the second wagon. He quickly relayed these orders to the others.

"Circle past the first two wagon--we'll attack the third while the traps hit the first and the other group hits the second. Erisciana says Missiles on the ogres and Sleep on the archers. We take out everything in the third wagon before worrying about the next. We want to stop the wagon, so Vardra and I are going right into melee." He dismounted and hefted his polearm, noticing Vardra had already equipped sword and shield in anticipation. "If we can get the gobbos asleep, we still need someone to off 'em as this may be a long fight. I sure can't climb up there, and my crossbow is going to be a bad way as they'll be slumped behind the cover of their firin' post." He looks at Sorvani, Wimzy, Sann, and Vardra. "Can anyone volunteer to take 'em out?"

As they circle around to the second wagon, Gerett gives a last few words. "We rush 'em while they are panicking. If they start to group up, Erisciana is probably going to call retreat. Three wagons down is a win, even if they have more behind. Let's get that ogre roughed up afore we try to kill off the archers."

EDIT: clarified which wagon our group is attacking.

Erisciana, priestess of Ishtar -

During the ride to the ambush point, the priestess wounds Lucyus' pride unintentionally with her suggestion. “It is just strange to relieve one with another in the middle of a battle, unless by death or stupidity.” He adds with a ghost of a smile. “Some more than others I am afraid. It is the same for most people I would think.”

"Technically we're not in the midst of battle," she responds with a smile. "And you are not being relieved. We would simply be splitting our forces in a different tactical manner."

“Oh well why didn’t you say so in the first place!” he says eyeing the priestess. “It is wise see what our strengths and weaknesses are, as well as how to use them."

"I thought I did!"

“It is agreeable. If it is for the good of our group, I am open to it. Just know if the need to step in is there, I will do so,” he says simply.

"I expect there to be a bit of chaos in this battle. This group is still learning to work together. And the enemy has been numerous on each encounter. I will try to keep an eye if any of us fall. Hopefully that will not be the case," she says stoically.

Kaylessa moves out with confirmations to Vernar. Gerett's team follows a few moments later. They would hit the third wagon, while Erisci and Lucyus' team would hit the second. It would be a lot to ask for her Sleep spell to affect all the hobgoblins on two wagons, but hopefully it would be enough. With Flare's expert marksmanship on her side and a number of archers on the other, she was confident the first three wagons would be quickly overcome, even with four ogres in their midst. This would be a chance for the frontline heavy fighters to prove their mettle. If the enemy grouped up, Ren might have a field day with fire grenades. If they came in smaller waves, then a concentrated attack could take them down one group at a time.

Erisci gave a quick prayer to the goddess and waited for the first explosion.
