Sylvan Realm #30 (#74)

December 7th, CR 571 or Deepnight 29th, 20,519 AP

The elves have departed the Sylvan Realm and have journeyed to Karn's Keep, the home of the Archmage Lord Sharadin Sculley. There they are to meet allies in the battle to eliminate the HIVE once and for all.

Before Departure:

Kylie speaks with her mother.
Kylie wrote:"I know what you mean, mom," Kylie says. "I had heard of Duke Kelvin before, but not this Lady Dahlia. I don't really know much about the Alphatians at all."
“That is not a surprise,” Speaker Allurien will say. “It is said that Alphatia is vast, the largest empire in the world. They are made up of multiple kingdoms, so they have far more nobles than we could even be aware of. It would be interesting place to visit it one day.”

Silvarn has revealed that 'telf' is common slang for those elves like Myev, who are very tall.
Kylie wrote:One of Kylie's eyebrows arches upwards. "'Tall elf'. I hate to think what the nicknames for the other groups of elves are. Please tell me that the smaller elves are not known as 'smelfs'..."
“Alright,” Silvarn replies with a grin. “I won't tell you.”

Karn's Keep:

The Sunflower settles down in the waters of the small lake beside Karn's Keep. From their, Lord Sharadin's daughters Sherry and Terry escort the elves through the giant keep to the meeting area. Many are impressed by the keep. Others not so much.
Lilia wrote:“It's still a giant cave,” is Lilia's comment on the whole matter.
“At least the ceilings are high,” Myev adds. “But there is nothing to climb! It's so lifeless!”

Once at the meeting area, introductions are made. Lord Sharadin acquire the services of a elite dwarven unit nicknamed the Goblin Kickers. The unit is led by Lieutenant Stonebeard and Sergeant Shalecrusher. Ma Granite is the units healer and a Priestess of Berronar.

The other brought by Lord Sharadin is Captain Antilles Roma, the commander of the Alphatian Peacekeeping Force currently patrolling Cynalon. This force was sent in by the Empress Eriadna of Alphatia to counter the involvement of one of their own, Lady Mingor, in the Cynalonian Civil War. Alphatia is officially neutral in the conflict and its Captain Roma's job to ensure it stays that way.

Silvarn recruited a trio of unusual men. Two have the looks of islanders from the Southern Seas and are even dressed that manner. Both of these men are somewhat reserved. The other man, Lothtor, is dressed more in keeping with the style of Cynalon.

After the introductions, Lord Sharadin urges the groups to mingle and get to know each other better before getting down to mission specifics.

The normally dressed man will leave the other two men and approach the elves. “Well met!,” the man will say as he approaches. At this close distance, you can see that this man does have one unusual characteristic that was not as noticeable before. His eyes are steel gray in color.

“Always a pleasure to meet elves!” he adds in a friendly manner as he offers his hand. “It is a shame that these HIVE cannot be negotiated with, but some creatures do not know reason. I have not heard of this Sylvan Realm of yours. I wish to know more of it.”

Lilia wrote:Lilia notes Myev's interest in the maps. She starts to walk in that direction, but pauses to get Lord Sharadin's attention.

“Lord Sharadin, a word if I may?” Lilia inquires.
“Of course, Your Majesty,” Lord Sharadin answers as he turns towards Lilia. “What is on your mind?”
Lilia wrote:“Myev is skilled in navigation. May she peruse your collection of maps?”
“She may,” Lord Sharadin answers. “Perhaps they will be useful to you. However, the maps are something on the order of fifty years old, so may not be accurate any more.”
Lilia wrote:Assuming the answer is yes, Lilia will go over to Myev.

“Lord Sharadin says its okay to examine the maps,” Lilia tells Myev. “Are these helpful to you? Will they give you the information you need to navigate the Sunflower?”
“It will help,” Myev says without looking away from the maps. “I don't know your world, but these will give me a place to start.”

Lilia wrote:On her way back to the others, Lilia will say a few words to the Alphatian Captain.

“Captain Roma,” Lilia calls out. “I don't believe I have met an officer in the Alphatian Navy before. I look forward to see your ship in action. I assume it has a full compliment of Spell Engines? How does it compare to the Sunflower?”
“Your Majesty,” Captain Roma says with a bow as she turns to face Lilia. “No disrespect intended, but your Sunflower is a common merchant vessel. The Dauntless a ship of war. There is no comparison.”

“The Dauntless,” Captain Roma continues with pride in her vessel heavy in her voice, “is the Flagship of the Imperial Navy. It has a force of mages and marines on board. It has a full compliment of forty Spell Engines and thirty-two Magi-Cannons. It could easily lay waste to this keep. I would estimate that the Dauntless is three times the size of the Sunflower.”

“I confess that I am unfamiliar with this Sylvan Realm of yours,” Captain Roma adds. “I have heard of the Elfholds and the Kingdom of Shiye-Lawr before. But not the Sylvan Realm. What is it?”

Lord Sharadin lays out his plan of attack on the Elder City. The entire group will entire via one of the Portal Artifacts accompanied by one of the Spell Engines taken from the Lady Iris. The Spell Engine will be used in defensive mode to put a shield around the Artifact and will be controlled by Sherry and Terry. Talen will remain as well to control the Pillar Artifact itself.

From there the group will move deeper into the city to engage the HIVE. Silvarn suggests that her group will go their own way as their abilities do not work well in a small group. Captain Roma will signal her ship and the Dauntless should arrive overhead in a matter of minutes. It is already over the Great Swamp.

Many questions soon follow. Talen relates what he knows about the Pillar Artifacts within the ruins of the Elder City.
Talen wrote:“I can sense that there are two formations within or near to the city,” Talen reports. “If I had to guess I'd say that they are at opposite ends. It was unusual to find two of them so close to each other. I cannot say where the city to city pillars are located at. I have yet to make contact with that particular web.”
“I see,” Lord Sharadin says. “Can you tell what conditions are like at the arrival points into the city? Are they free of danger or buried?”
Talen wrote:“When do we leave?” Talen asks.
“As soon as we are in agreement with our strategy,” Lord Sharadin answers.
Onas wrote:"If I may, my Lord," Onas interjects as he takes a half step forward. "What is our plan in regards to the composition of those groups - other than Lady Silvarn and her friends of course? Also, Talen mentioned two of these transportation pillars. Does that constitute a potential escape route for the enemy? Should we consider sending some of our forces in each way to cut them off?"
Talen wrote:“That won't be a problem,” Talen speaks up. “I turned the Pillar Artifacts off a few days ago. I'll activate the one we use, but deactivate the other. They may try to use it, but it won't work for them. As long as I'm at the one Pillar Artifact, I can keep the other locked.”
“That is what I was counting on, Talen,” Lord Sharadin nods approvingly. “As for splitting up into smaller groups, I doubt that we have the full mobility of Lady Silvarn and her allies. For now, I feel more comfortable in staying together than going our separate ways. However, what of this city to city portal that you mentioned, Talen? Could they use that to escape?”

“If there is another location that needs protective shielding,” Captain Roma speaks up, “I can have the Dauntless lower our Portal Engine and use that for block that escape route.”
Laucian wrote:“Be weary of the dead. The bug that Silvarn speaks of can animate them, even manage the corpse to speak. A few arrows can kill the bugs easily enough but if they decide to swarm..” he leaves it at that, "So mind each other’s head.”
Lilia wrote:“The smaller ones that latch on to your heads can travel in swarms, so be on guard for that,” Lilia adds. “But they are frail and even the simplest area of effect spells can remove them.”
“Good to know,” Captain Roma adds.

“Maybe for you spell-slingers,” Lieutenant Stonebeard calls out. “We dwarves don't have that luxury.”

“Another reason for your unit to stay close to Queen Lilia's elves,” Lord Sharadin answers.

“Rest assured good dwarf,” Gweyr Autumnfire speaks up. “They won't get close enough to harm any of you. I will burn them to a crisp before that.”

“I'm gonna hold ye to that lass!” Sergeant Stonebeard responds, pointing at Gweyr.

Laucian wrote:After Onas speaks of separating the force, Laucian asks. “Is there a way to have the shield activated as we go through the portal? Have it about the twins and the spell engine and then enlarge it once we enter? As you say we do not know what we are walking into. It is a swamp so lizardfolk and the like maybe about.”
“No,” Captain Roma says fielding the question. “The Spell Engine has to be moved into position first and then activated. But, once it is activated, the size of the barrier can be increased. This will effectively push any enemy outside it further away. Those inside the barrier can pass through it, even cast spells or used range weapons through it as if it was not there.”
Laucian wrote:“There is also a chance the Hive has passed over some of it’s prospective victims. Those it sees weak or undesirable were imprisoned. It takes only that it views as strong candidates. If we cross their prisons, there maybe unknowingly allies of what race I do not know.”
“So, there may be captives to be freed,” Lord Sharadin surmises. “We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.”

“The Portal Engine that I mentioned earlier is a fast way to move from the Dauntless overhead to the ground,” Captain Roma adds. “It can also be use to move anyone rescued up to the ship or serve as a secondary exit point should the need arise.”

“Good to know,” Lord Sharadin says to Captain Roma.
Kylie wrote:"That's a good point, Laucian," Kylie replies. "That is how we found both Myev and that Argent. Who knows how many prisoners they may have."
“An' what kinda critters either,” Sergeant Shalecrusher notes. “These HIVE donnae seem picky one who they infect!”
Lilia wrote:“Speaking of Argent,” Lilia speaks up, “the HIVE we fought was using one of them as their Hive Queen and was directing their operations. According to Talen, another Argent also appeared at our destination. It is not unreasonable to think that this other Argent was also changed into a Hive Queen. The HIVE we encountered were also able to mimic her unique style in casting Magic Missiles. It seems the HIVE to take abilities from those in their thrall and make them their own. Lady Silvarn, do you have any further insight into that aspect of the HIVE?”
Lilia wrote:Kylie deflates visibly. "I really hope that we don't have to kill another Argent," she says softly as she recalls the pain of having to kill her friend once already.
“Again, we'll deal with that potential situation should it arise,” Lord Sharadin states. “It may be possible to save someone who was infected by the HIVE, but not transformed like the Argent you fought up north. We have yet to try this method, but in theory, it should work. It may be possible to save the Argent you defeated earlier.”

“It is unknown just how many abilities like the one you mention the HIVE can make use of,” Silvarn answers Lilia's question. “This ability seems to come from the controller, or Hive Queen you spoke of. The HIVE communicates among its member by way of pheromones, smell essentially. If you can smell something sickly sweet, then that is the HIVE communicating. In short, the Hive Queen can grant her underlings her powers. That can make them very dangerous.”
Lia wrote:“Forgive my interruption, But Talen was able to create furniture at the other Elder site. It could be possible to create them for defensive purposes or seal passages. Seeing as you do not have a battle plan, this should be considered."
“I was unaware of this ability,” Lord Sharadin says. “Is this true Talen?”
Lilia wrote:“I forgot about that,” Lilia admits. “If Talen can manipulate the environment like he can back in Shillesta, then perhaps he could create barriers to block enemy advancement.”
“That would be an impressive power,” Lothtor adds. “I have never heard of anyone being able to control Elder Devices who did not already have mental abilities. You are a unique individual, young Talen.”

“And one who needsss protection,” Quirin unexpectedly speaks up, slurring his s's as if he was a serpent. “There are thosssse who would exploit him for evil endssss.”

“We've seem to have covered a great many things,” Lord Sharadin announces. “Any other questions”

Kylie Lanthorn the Half-Elven:

Before Departure:
Allurien wrote:“That is not a surprise,” Speaker Allurien will say. “It is said that Alphatia is vast, the largest empire in the world. They are made up of multiple kingdoms, so they have far more nobles than we could even be aware of. It would be interesting place to visit it one day.”
Kylie nods as her mother talks about Alphatia. Lilia had provided a small amount of information regarding the country as she taught Kylie the language, but it seems the empire is even larger than she had imagined. "I think I would like that, especially if we went together."
Silvarn wrote:“Alright,” Silvarn replies with a grin. “I won't tell you.”
Kylie lowers her chin and looks at the silver-haired woman through half-lidded eyes. "A dragon with a sense of humor. Charming." She manages to hold the expression for a couple seconds before the mask cracks and a smirk peeks through.

Karn's Keep:

Once the time for mingling with the rest of the assault force arrives, the less exotic-looking of Silvan's three friends approaches.

"A pleasure to meet you," Kylie replies, accepting his hand. "Lothar, was it? I'm Kylie. The Sylvan Realm is a wonderful place, and was the home of the elves before they moved to the Elfholds. Lilia, the queen, probably knows the most about its history of those here."

When an opportunity arises, Kylie will approach the dwarven priestess. "Ma Granite? Hello, I'm Kylie. From your regalia, it looks like Berronar Truesilver may be your patron. I used to travel with a companion named Grondar Foehammer who was one of her priests. Unfortunately, I haven't seen or heard anything of him since we began the trip up north to the Sylvan Realm."

Talk turns to the assault and related tactics.
Sergeant Shalecrusher wrote:“An' what kinda critters either,” Sergeant Shalecrusher notes. “These HIVE donnae seem picky one who they infect!”
"Not that we've seen so far," Kylie replies. "If there are limits, I don't know what they are."
Sharadin wrote:“Again, we'll deal with that potential situation should it arise,” Lord Sharadin states. “It may be possible to save someone who was infected by the HIVE, but not transformed like the Argent you fought up north. We have yet to try this method, but in theory, it should work. It may be possible to save the Argent you defeated earlier.”
This is the first Kylie has heard of any way of rescuing the infected. Of course, the archmage's knowledge and skill with magic both far exceed her own. Still, it is encouraging to hear. "I pray you are right, Lord Sharadin."
Lothar wrote:“That would be an impressive power,” Lothtor adds. “I have never heard of anyone being able to control Elder Devices who did not already have mental abilities. You are a unique individual, young Talen.”
Quirin wrote:“And one who needsss protection,” Quirin unexpectedly speaks up, slurring his s's as if he was a serpent. “There are thosssse who would exploit him for evil endssss.”
Kylie is pleased listening to these two friends of Silvarn. They appreciate how special and important he is, just as she does, and that is a good thing indeed. She gives Talen a proud and encouraging smile.
Sharadin wrote:“We've seem to have covered a great many things,” Lord Sharadin announces. “Any other questions”
"None here," Kylie replies simply. At this point, she feels that she is as ready as she's ever going to be. There is so much they don't know about what they will find on the other end of the portal, that they will just have to adapt and adjust as they go.

Lilia:

“Greetings, Lothtor,” Lilia will add. “I am Lilia and I have been elected Queen of the Sylvan Realm. As Kylie stated, the Sylvan Realm was the home of the elves before the Elfholds. We have been working to restore into being its own nation of elves. Enlightened beings are always welcomed to visit our forest.”

Lilia speaks to Lord Sharadin.
Lord Sharadin wrote:“She may,” Lord Sharadin answers. “Perhaps they will be useful to you. However, the maps are something on the order of fifty years old, so may not be accurate any more.”
“It's starting point at least,” Lilia answers. “My thanks, Lord Sharadin.”

And then with Myev.
Myev wrote:“It will help,” Myev says without looking away from the maps. “I don't know your world, but these will give me a place to start.”
“Good,” Lilia says with a nod of approval. “In fact, why don't you work on this project while we are away? We'll return shortly.” Lilia has no desire to take Myev who admits to not being herself yet into a dangerous combat setting. Working on this project suits her better. Lilia will mention this to Lord Sharadin so that he is made aware of it.

Then Lilia speaks with Captain Roma.
Captain Roma wrote:“Your Majesty,” Captain Roma says with a bow as she turns to face Lilia. “No disrespect intended, but your Sunflower is a common merchant vessel. The Dauntless a ship of war. There is no comparison.”
“I am sure there is not,” Lilia agrees, not offended as this just confirms what she suspected.
Captain Roma wrote:“The Dauntless,” Captain Roma continues with pride in her vessel heavy in her voice, “is the Flagship of the Imperial Navy. It has a force of mages and marines on board. It has a full compliment of forty Spell Engines and thirty-two Magi-Cannons. It could easily lay waste to this keep. I would estimate that the Dauntless is three times the size of the Sunflower.”
“Forty Spell Engines? Impressive,” Lilia says. “I look forward to seeing it in battle.” She has no idea what a Magi-Cannon is. Perhaps it is the offensive function of a Spell Engine?
Captain Roma wrote:“I confess that I am unfamiliar with this Sylvan Realm of yours,” Captain Roma adds. “I have heard of the Elfholds and the Kingdom of Shiye-Lawr before. But not the Sylvan Realm. What is it?”
“We have something in common then,” Lilia states. “I had not heard of the Kingdom of Shiye-Lawr before. If I were to venture I guess, it is an elfin kingdom in Alphatia? The Sylvan Realm was the elves home before the move to the Elfholds. It was recently reclaimed and we are slowly building it up once more.”

“We acquired the Sunflower in unusual circumstances,” Lilia says, getting back to the subject of flying ships. “Some scro stole it from a organization called the Talagran Trading Company and they flew it to the Elder Ruins to the north of the Sylvan Realm. Have you heard of this company before, Captain Roma? Our Seeress tells me that they are coming to retrieve their ship in just a matter of days.”

Captain Roma wrote:“If there is another location that needs protective shielding,” Captain Roma speaks up, “I can have the Dauntless lower our Portal Engine and use that for block that escape route.”
Lilia raises her eyebrow in curious surprise, but says nothing. What is a Portal Engine?
Captain Roma wrote:“No,” Captain Roma says fielding the question. “The Spell Engine has to be moved into position first and then activated. But, once it is activated, the size of the barrier can be increased. This will effectively push any enemy outside it further away. Those inside the barrier can pass through it, even cast spells or used range weapons through it as if it was not there.”
“Fascinating,” is Lilia's comment on that revelation. The Elf Maiden was unsure just how the defensive function worked.
Lord Sharadin wrote:“So, there may be captives to be freed,” Lord Sharadin surmises. “We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.”
Captain Roma wrote:“The Portal Engine that I mentioned earlier is a fast way to move from the Dauntless overhead to the ground,” Captain Roma adds. “It can also be use to move anyone rescued up to the ship or serve as a secondary exit point should the need arise.”
Captain Roma wrote:“Good to know,” Lord Sharadin says to Captain Roma.
“So its transport from one portal to another?” Lilia inquires. “A short range teleport?”
Kylie wrote: Kylie deflates visibly. "I really hope that we don't have to kill another Argent," she says softly as she recalls the pain of having to kill her friend once already.
“Let us pray it does not come to that,” Lilia says with empathy.
Lord Sharadin wrote:“Again, we'll deal with that potential situation should it arise,” Lord Sharadin states. “It may be possible to save someone who was infected by the HIVE, but not transformed like the Argent you fought up north. We have yet to try this method, but in theory, it should work. It may be possible to save the Argent you defeated earlier.”
Lord Sharadin wrote:This is the first Kylie has heard of any way of rescuing the infected. Of course, the archmage's knowledge and skill with magic both far exceed her own. Still, it is encouraging to hear. "I pray you are right, Lord Sharadin."
“Interesting,” is Lilia's comment. Must involve powerful priest magic she would guess. Spells beyond Lilia's ability to make use of right now.
Silvarn wrote:“It is unknown just how many abilities like the one you mention the HIVE can make use of,” Silvarn answers Lilia's question.
“Yes, I recall the smell,” Lilia adds. “Most unpleasant. However, it does suggest that something like a Stinking Cloud spell placed around the Hive Queen and it could interrupt her ability to control the others of the HIVE. Something to keep in mind.”
Lothtor wrote:“That would be an impressive power,” Lothtor adds.
“I fully agree,” Lilia inserts. “What Talen has discovered is a great find. We of the Sylvan Realm will invite those who wish to study and learn from the ruins in the pursuit of knowledge. However, we are limited in our regards to defend ourselves from those with malevolent intentions.”
Lord Sharadin wrote:“We've seem to have covered a great many things,” Lord Sharadin announces. “Any other questions”
“I think it is time to take the fight to the HIVE and end this menace once and for all,” Lilia concludes.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Onas Brightsword:
Valena wrote:“I gather that the others met Silvarn when they were back at Karn's Keep,” Valena theorizes. “That would explain things. Silvarn was present when the Sunflower returned to the Mother Tree a few nights ago. But then she was gone just as quickly.”
"So not an unknown quantity, then. Good," Onas says. He doubts that Lilia would have returned with someone she didn't trust, and that is good enough for him.
Valena wrote:“Eight, I believe,” Valena says mentally counting the size of the group. “The five who were chosen along with Laucian, Sherwood and I. The trip was very dull. Once they switched over to using a Spell Engine, we flew non-stop for a week to reach the Sylvan Realm.”
Onas smiles at Valena's description of the trip north from the Elfholds. "From what I have heard, things were anything but dull once you arrived in the Sylvan Realm."

Onas listens carefully to the descriptions provided of the Hive. Like many there, he does not have personal experience of them and wants to make sure he knows what he's getting into. They sound like a gruesome foe and best exterminated with extreme prejudice.
Sharadin wrote:“That is what I was counting on, Talen,” Lord Sharadin nods approvingly. “As for splitting up into smaller groups, I doubt that we have the full mobility of Lady Silvarn and her allies. For now, I feel more comfortable in staying together than going our separate ways. However, what of this city to city portal that you mentioned, Talen? Could they use that to escape?”
Not surprisingly, tactics is the first order of business. Onas nods in response to Lord Sharadin's reply. It seems there will be but two groups: Silvarn and her friends, and everyone else. That should be manageable.
Laucian wrote:After Onas speaks of separating the force, Laucian asks. “Is there a way to have the shield activated as we go through the portal? Have it about the twins and the spell engine and then enlarge it once we enter? As you say we do not know what we are walking into. It is a swamp so lizardfolk and the like maybe about.
"I'm a bit confused," Onas admits with a grimace. "From what some have said, it sounded like the Hive base was underground. Laucian referred to it being a swamp. Do we know what kind of terrain we're venturing into?"

Several people mention the possibility of prisoners being present. Onas takes careful note of this information; if there is an opportunity to rescue uninfected people from these creatures, he will do his utmost to assist them.

There is also mention of Talen manipulating the environment in the Elder city. Onas is not entirely sure what they mean by that, with Kylie mentioning 'red stone', but is interested to find out. Many seem impressed by the ability, leading him to reconsider the half-elf.

The time to mingle and converse with their new allies arrives. One of Silvarn's friends approaches and addresses the elves as a group. "Hello, Lothar. I'm Onas Brightsword. I take it you're a friend of the lady known as Silvarn? I've only been in the Sylvan Realm a few days, so I cannot really tell you much about it." Fortunately, Kylie and the queen provide more information.

The Alphatian officer, Captain Roma, mentions a Portal Engine. From the description and questions, it is apparently an enchanted item for transporting people from one place to another. Good to know. Could be useful, particularly if things go bad or they need to evacuate prisoners.

When the opportunity arises, Onas will address Talen. "It was mentioned that you have some ability to manipulate the Elder city. What did they mean by that?"

Talen:

During the gathering Talen's knowledge of their destination is put to the test.
Lord Sharadin wrote:“I see,” Lord Sharadin says. “Can you tell what conditions are like at the arrival points into the city? Are they free of danger or buried?”
“When I checked a few days ago, both Portal Artifacts were usable,” Talen reports. “While I have no idea what is around either of them, using them will cause no harm. They are not buried or underwater or worse. I'll check again before we use them.”
Lord Sharadin wrote:“That is what I was counting on, Talen,” Lord Sharadin nods approvingly. “As for splitting up into smaller groups, I doubt that we have the full mobility of Lady Silvarn and her allies. For now, I feel more comfortable in staying together than going our separate ways. However, what of this city to city portal that you mentioned, Talen? Could they use that to escape?”
“It is a larger version of the Pillar Artifact,” Talen explains. “The HIVE used it to reach Shillesta, that's what the Elder's called the city to the north of the Sylvan Realm. They came from Shelvestra, where we are going to. The one up in Shillesta was buried when we fought the HIVE, so I was not able to connect with it. Clearly the one in Shelvestra is free to be used.”

“However, as I understand it, there were six Elder Cities in all that were connected on this 'web'. But something happened twenty thousand years ago and half of the Pillar Artifacts vanished. Half the Elder Cities did as well. So, there should be a third Elder City somewhere. I just have no idea where. I only figured out where this one was by tracing where all the Argent's went when they were split.”
Onas wrote:"I'm a bit confused," Onas admits with a grimace. "From what some have said, it sounded like the Hive base was underground. Laucian referred to it being a swamp. Do we know what kind of terrain we're venturing into?"
“I have no idea,” Talen admits. “Like I said, using the Pillar Artifact to get there is not dangerous. Just what is around them I have no way of knowing. It may be similar to the ruins we found by the Sylvan Realm. The ground had split and shattered over the years. There was a large section of the city on the shore line with a world to world pillar at the end of the dock. Then there were a couple of areas on plateaus at various heights. There was a lot of destruction elsewhere.”
Lia wrote:“Forgive my interruption, But Talen was able to create furniture at the other Elder site. It could be possible to create them for defensive purposes or seal passages. Seeing as you do not have a battle plan, this should be considered."
Lia wrote:“I forgot about that,” Lilia admits. “If Talen can manipulate the environment like he can back in Shillesta, then perhaps he could create barriers to block enemy advancement.”
Kylie wrote:Lia brings up a good point about Talen's new abilities, and Lilia supports the idea. "I suppose it may depend on how much of the red stone is still there. Good to be on the lookout for whatever we can use to our advantage." Kylie looks down to make sure that Talen is taking note of his sister's suggestion.
Lord Sharadin wrote:“I was unaware of this ability,” Lord Sharadin says. “Is this true Talen?”
“Yes, Uncle,” Talen answers. “I've only tested it once after we returned to Shillesta a few days ago. The red stone that still works there can be commanded to assume shapes. I directed it to make some furniture. That's all I've done so far. Making a wall shouldn't be hard if this city is the same.”
Lothtor wrote:“That would be an impressive power,” Lothtor adds. “I have never heard of anyone being able to control Elder Devices who did not already have mental abilities. You are a unique individual, young Talen.”
“Uhm, thanks?” Talen offers, unsure what to make of this mystery man.
Quirin wrote:“And one who needsss protection,” Quirin unexpectedly speaks up, slurring his s's as if he was a serpent. “There are thosssse who would exploit him for evil endssss.”
“That didn't sound creepy at all,” Talen thinks to himself as the man exaggerates his s's.
Lilia wrote:“I fully agree,” Lilia inserts. “What Talen has discovered is a great find. We of the Sylvan Realm will invite those who wish to study and learn from the ruins in the pursuit of knowledge. However, we are limited in our regards to defend ourselves from those with malevolent intentions.”
“I won't let what remains of the Elder's devices be used in harmful ends,” Talen declares. “I have no problem with those who want to learn what they did. If I can help others in the process, all the better.”
Onas wrote:When the opportunity arises, Onas will address Talen. "It was mentioned that you have some ability to manipulate the Elder city. What did they mean by that?"
Talen considers what to say for a moment. “The stone in Shillesta is reddish in color and glows when people are around it. Its full of energy and ready to do something. So I had it make some tables and chairs. I don't think it was smart, but it wanted to do what I asked it too. That probably doesn't make much sense, but the stuff I am learning doesn't make much sense either.”

“Always a pleasure to meet elves!” he adds in a friendly manner as he offers his hand. “It is a shame that these HIVE cannot be negotiated with, but some creatures do not know reason. I have not heard of this Sylvan Realm of yours. I wish to know more of it.”
Kylie wrote:"A pleasure to meet you," Kylie replies, accepting his hand. "Lothar, was it? I'm Kylie. The Sylvan Realm is a wonderful place, and was the home of the elves before they moved to the Elfholds. Lilia, the queen, probably knows the most about its history of those here."
Laucian extends his arm in greeting.
“Hail Lothtor and well met.” Laucian says evenly. “if the day comes that you visit our lands it would be a pleasure to show you and your comrades about.”
As the others speak to Talen about his powers of the Elders’ Laucian makes his way to the Captain. “Excuse me, Captain Roma?’He says as extends his hand in greeting. “Tis a pleasure, I was wondering if I might pick your brain for but a moment.” He adds evenly. “This ship you command is one made to defend as well as offense. The unit that I command is an aerial unit, The Golden Griffons. Are there any manoeuvres you may suggest to over taking a ship such as yours as we may have foes coming for my people?”
Quirin wrote:“And one who needsss protection,” Quirin unexpectedly speaks up, slurring his s's as if he was a serpent. “There are thosssse who would exploit him for evil endssss.”
Laucian looks to Quirin, noticing the snake like eyes and then the way he says his s’s like a snake. For a moment, Laucian resists the urge to go to his sword. But a thought comes to him,
“I have heard of legends and myths of individuals who are half human half other creatures.” Trying to be respectful as he can, “Are you of tainted blood? A teifling, if I recall the term.

Laucian will then make his way to the dwarves. “It seems we are to work with one another. Is your unit used to being fired over?” he asks simply.

Laucian doesn’t have anything else to add and will be ready to leave when they are.

A smile etches across the drow’s face, “Our archers are pretty good as well. I may have to join you on the line, if you don’t mind fighting along side a she elf.” She adds with a hint of a smile.
“I was unaware of this ability,” Lord Sharadin says. “Is this true Talen?”
Lia looks at Talen with an apologetic look. She did not meant o put him on the spot but apparently she is good at doing that to him.
Lia listens to the others as they converse. Even when the one with the snake like yes begin excentuate his s’s.

Kylie Lanthorn the Half-Elven:

Lilia and Captain Roma engage in discussion regarding the captain's flagship, the Dauntless. Kylie listens in with some interest.
Lilia wrote:“Forty Spell Engines? Impressive,” Lilia says. “I look forward to seeing it in battle.” She has no idea what a Magi-Cannon is. Perhaps it is the offensive function of a Spell Engine?
Kylie is stunned speechless for a moment at the mention of forty Spell Engines. On one ship! And it has armaments of some kind. "Captain Roma, pardon me for butting in, but what is a Magi-Cannon? I've never heard of such a thing."
Lilia wrote:“Let us pray it does not come to that,” Lilia says with empathy.
Turning to the queen, Kylie's eyes reflect the emotional impact of that deed. "Yes, thank you."
Talen wrote:“However, as I understand it, there were six Elder Cities in all that were connected on this 'web'. But something happened twenty thousand years ago and half of the Pillar Artifacts vanished. Half the Elder Cities did as well. So, there should be a third Elder City somewhere. I just have no idea where. I only figured out where this one was by tracing where all the Argent's went when they were split.”
"Once we reach the one in Shelvestra, you should be able to determine where the other city or cities are, right, Talen?"
Talen wrote:“I won't let what remains of the Elder's devices be used in harmful ends,” Talen declares. “I have no problem with those who want to learn what they did. If I can help others in the process, all the better.”
"I think we're all pretty committed to that," Kylie adds.
Lilia wrote:“Yes, I recall the smell,” Lilia adds. “Most unpleasant. However, it does suggest that something like a Stinking Cloud spell placed around the Hive Queen and it could interrupt her ability to control the others of the HIVE. Something to keep in mind.”
Kylie recalls the odor all too well, but has nothing to add in that regard.

Onas wrote:"So not an unknown quantity, then. Good," Onas says. He doubts that Lilia would have returned with someone she didn't trust, and that is good enough for him.
“I first encountered her at the end of the Siege of Corunglain,” Valena adds. “It's where I met Laucian as well. So, a somewhat known quantity.”
Onas wrote:Onas smiles at Valena's description of the trip north from the Elfholds. "From what I have heard, things were anything but dull once you arrived in the Sylvan Realm."
“Dull? No, probably not,” Valena says. “It was good to have solid ground under my feet again. Restoring the Mother Tree was a great mystery, one that took several weeks to solve.”

Valena pays attention to the battle preparations, but doesn't have anything to add. You can only plan so much when it comes to the unknown.

Pre-Departure:

Kylie wrote:Kylie nods as her mother talks about Alphatia. Lilia had provided a small amount of information regarding the country as she taught Kylie the language, but it seems the empire is even larger than she had imagined. "I think I would like that, especially if we went together."
“Perhaps someday,” Allurien says with a smile. “When things are less hectic. So, in other words, not any time soon.”

At Karn's Keep, the elves are meeting the allies summoned by Lord Sharadin and Silvarn to assist in taking on the HIVE. After introductions are made, mingling follows. All for except Myev who made a beeline to the old charts and maps that Lord Karn had.
Lilia wrote:“Good,” Lilia says with a nod of approval. “In fact, why don't you work on this project while we are away? We'll return shortly.” Lilia has no desire to take Myev who admits to not being herself yet into a dangerous combat setting. Working on this project suits her better. Lilia will mention this to Lord Sharadin so that he is made aware of it.
“Okay,” Myev answers without looking away from her work. She's just too engrossed in it to pay attention to what is going on around her.

Lothtor, the normal dressed ally of Silvarn, comes forth to meet the elves.
“Lothtor actually,” the man says. “The home before the Elfholds? How interesting.”
Lilia wrote:“Greetings, Lothtor,” Lilia will add. “I am Lilia and I have been elected Queen of the Sylvan Realm. As Kylie stated, the Sylvan Realm was the home of the elves before the Elfholds. We have been working to restore into being its own nation of elves. Enlightened beings are always welcomed to visit our forest.”
“I will have to take you up on our offer some time,” Lothtor answers. “I've always enjoyed my time among the elves.”
Onas wrote:The time to mingle and converse with their new allies arrives.
“Acquaintance is more accurate,” Lothtor will say in regards to his relationship with Silvarn. “Let just say that we share similar goals, but use different means to reach them. I must say that it is unusual to find an elf wearing heavy armor. Clan Red Arrow?”
Laucian wrote:“Hail Lothtor and well met.” Laucian says evenly. “if the day comes that you visit our lands it would be a pleasure to show you and your comrades about.”
“I may take you up on your kind offer,” Lothtor says with a bow.

The Alphatian naval officer, Captain Antilles Roma holds a few conversations as well. Lord Sharadin introduced her as the commander of the Alphatian Peacekeeping Force and the Captain of the Dauntless. Captain Roma was telling Lilia about her flagship.
Lilia wrote:“Forty Spell Engines? Impressive,” Lilia says. “I look forward to seeing it in battle.” She has no idea what a Magi-Cannon is. Perhaps it is the offensive function of a Spell Engine?
“Necessary for a warship,” Captain Roma states.
Kylie wrote:Kylie is stunned speechless for a moment at the mention of forty Spell Engines. On one ship! And it has armaments of some kind. "Captain Roma, pardon me for butting in, but what is a Magi-Cannon? I've never heard of such a thing."
“I would imagine that the Spell Engines that you've encountered thus far were what we consider 'general use models',” Captain Roma says. “Much like the one Lord Sharadin here acquired from the Lady Iris. A Magi-Cannon is a specialized form of Spell Engine designed for a specific task. They launch projectiles at targets at incredible speeds. These projectiles either explode upon contact, much like a Fireball spell, or strike much like a sling stone the size of a cabbage. Regardless of attack used you will want to avoid any area under bombardment from a Magi-Cannon.”
Lilia wrote:“We have something in common then,” Lilia states. “I had not heard of the Kingdom of Shiye-Lawr before. If I were to venture I guess, it is an elfin kingdom in Alphatia? The Sylvan Realm was the elves home before the move to the Elfholds. It was recently reclaimed and we are slowly building it up once more.”
“That is correct,” Captain Roma confirms. “A know very little about Shiye-Lawr. You elves seem to prefer to live deep in the forests. But they are loyal members of the Empire. King Acroshyre rules them, I believe.”
Lilia wrote:“We acquired the Sunflower in unusual circumstances,” Lilia says, getting back to the subject of flying ships. “Some scro stole it from a organization called the Talagran Trading Company and they flew it to the Elder Ruins to the north of the Sylvan Realm. Have you heard of this company before, Captain Roma? Our Seeress tells me that they are coming to retrieve their ship in just a matter of days.”
“Yes, I have heard of them,” Captain Roma admits, her eyes growing wide. “Are you telling me that they are coming to this world? Our world? That they would dare operate in the backyard of the Empire? Such a thing is intolerable! Where is your Sylvan Realm and when were they supposed to arrive? The might of Alphatia will show these scavengers the err of their ways!”
Laucian wrote:As the others speak to Talen about his powers of the Elders’ Laucian makes his way to the Captain. “Excuse me, Captain Roma?” He says as extends his hand in greeting.
“Hello,” Captain Roma answers returning the greeting.
Laucian wrote:“Tis a pleasure, I was wondering if I might pick your brain for but a moment.” He adds evenly. “This ship you command is one made to defend as well as offense. The unit that I command is an aerial unit, The Golden Griffons. Are there any maneuvers you may suggest to over taking a ship such as yours as we may have foes coming for my people?”
“You are speaking off the Talagran Trading Company?” Captain Roma suspects after speaking with Lilia. “While I doubt that they have any ships like mine, their vessels are probably more inline with the Sunflower. Regardless, if they have their defensive shields up, do not try to approach them. These magical barriers are as hard as a brick wall. You will not be able to penetrate such a protected vessel. Otherwise, treat them as if they were a ship on the water.”

Kylie wrote:When an opportunity arises, Kylie will approach the dwarven priestess.
“I'm surprised that an elf has heard o' Lady Truesilver before,” Ma Granite casually remarks. “Ye say ye traveled with another feanor before? Amazin'. Never heard o' this Grondar Foehammer, but there are many who serve the Revered Mother in their own ways. I see to the well being o' the Goblin Kickers and have for many years. They are my clan now.”

Laucian approaches Quirin.
Laucian wrote:“I have heard of legends and myths of individuals who are half human half other creatures.” Trying to be respectful as he can, “Are you of tainted blood? A tiefling, if I recall the term.
“No,” Quirin simply answers and walks away.

After mingling, the force settles in to discuss strategy.
Talen wrote:“When I checked a few days ago, both Portal Artifacts were usable,” Talen reports. “While I have no idea what is around either of them, using them will cause no harm. They are not buried or underwater or worse. I'll check again before we use them.”
“Good, so arrival is safe,” Lord Sharadin sums up. “But anything after that is unknown. Pretty much what was expected.”
Talen wrote:“It is a larger version of the Pillar Artifact,” Talen explains.
“That seems to be the case,” Lord Sharadin agrees.
“I see,” Lord Sharadin says, taking all of this in. “So there is the possibility of a third Elder City somewhere in the world and that the HIVE could be located at. Another problem that we will have to deal with when the time comes.”

“Where ever this third city is at,” Captain Roma speaks up, “it must be remarkably well hidden to have gone undiscovered for so long. From what I've gathered, these two known cities are in very out of the way places.”

Talen wrote:“Yes, Uncle,” Talen answers. “I've only tested it once after we returned to Shillesta a few days ago. The red stone that still works there can be commanded to assume shapes. I directed it to make some furniture. That's all I've done so far. Making a wall shouldn't be hard if this city is the same.”
“Good to know,” Lord Sharadin states.
Lilia wrote:“So its transport from one portal to another?” Lilia inquires. “A short range teleport?”
“Essentially, yes,” Captain Roma confirms. “A Portal Engine is another specialized Spell Engine. They work in pairs and the magic creates a portal between to the two that you can pass through. One Portal Engine is secured below the decks of the Dauntless, while the other can be lowered to the ground. When both are activated the two are magically connected. The range is short, perhaps up to a mile, but useful for quick moving and for cargo.”
Lilia wrote:“Yes, I recall the smell,” Lilia adds. “Most unpleasant. However, it does suggest that something like a Stinking Cloud spell placed around the Hive Queen and it could interrupt her ability to control the others of the HIVE. Something to keep in mind.”
“So our ultimate goal is to remove the Hive Queen from the battle,” Captain Roma muses. “Cut off the HIVE'S head and the body dies. Another factor to take into consideration.”

“We must also save as many innocents as we can,” Saryn unexpectedly adds. “Whatever suffering that the HIVE has unleashed must be stopped.”

“Aye!” Ma Granite calls out in agreement. “Whatever it takes to stop these beasties!”

Talk turns to Talen's gifts.
Talen wrote:“I won't let what remains of the Elder's devices be used in harmful ends,” Talen declares. “I have no problem with those who want to learn what they did. If I can help others in the process, all the better.”
“We will assist as best we can in this matter,” Saryn will say. “There will be those who will try to twist this gift to malevolent ends.”

“Pity this SSSSSSylvan Realm is ssssso far from my jungle,” Quirin laments. “Too cold for my kind.”

“I believe that we are as ready as we can be,” Lord Sharadin announces. “While we humans, dwarves and elves have many differences we also have many things in common. Uniting for the common good is one of them. Together we make the world a better place for all. That is our mission this day. Let us begin.”

Silvarn, and her allies seem pleased by this.

With that, the attack force starts their journey to the Pillar Artifact in the sub-basement of Karn's Keep. More talking occurs along the way.
Laucian wrote:Laucian will then make his way to the dwarves. “It seems we are to work with one another. Is your unit used to being fired over?” he asks simply.
“As long as ye aim high, it's not an issue,” Lieutenant Stonebeard will say.

“Just keep yer distance, elf,” Sergeant Shalecrusher adds. “If'n you don't want a axe in yer belly! A dwarf in the heat of battle rarely notes where their back swing goes!”

Lia wrote:A smile etches across the drow’s face, “Our archers are pretty good as well. I may have to join you on the line, if you don’t mind fighting along side a she elf.” She adds with a hint of a smile.
“We be not expectin' a dark elf to be among elves,” Lieutenant Stonebeard answers honestly. “So ye must be okay to be with them. If'n you want to fight by our side, then ye shall have the chance to do so!”

Eventually, the group reaches the massive sub-basement of Karn's Keep. The vast chamber is 200' across and wide, with the ceiling 100' over head. It was dark here before when the elves first arrived a few days ago. Since then Lord Sharadin has place numerous rocks with Continual Light cast on them to illuminate the chamber. There are also guards posted down here now. A cart sits near the Pillar Artifact with the Spell Engine from the Lady Iris mounted on it.

Talen moves up to the Pillar Artifact and touches it.

“I'm checking on the 'web' for this set of artifacts,” Talen reports. “Hmm, my lockout is still in place. No one has used the Pillar Artifacts for several days now.”

“What about the ones at our destination?” Lord Sharadin inquires. “Are they still usable.”

“Checking,” Talen answers. “This is very strange... The last time I did this, there were two Pillar Artifacts within Shelvestra. Now I can only sense one! There other is simply not there anymore. I don't understand it. But the one that is active is clear to use. We can go right now, Uncle.”

“Go ahead and do so, Talen,” Lord Sharadin commands. “Everyone get ready! We are about to depart!”

“All right, Goblin Kickers!” Lieutenant Stonebeard calls out. “Get ready ta go inta the belly o' the beast!”

The Goblin Kickers start to rap their weapons on their shields in preparation.

“We'll go through first,” Silvarn announces referring to herself and her allies. “Then everyone else.”

At Talen's direction, the Pillar Artifact comes to live. Silvarn followed by Saryn, Quirin and Lothtor pass through and are gone.

“Once more into the breach,” Lord Sharadin says to no one in particular and as he takes a hold of the cart with the Spell Engine and prepares to push it into the Pillar Artifact. “May fortune favor us all!”

GM Notes:

The 32 Magi-Cannons are part of the 40 Spell Engines that Captain Roma mentioned. Add the 2 Portal Engines to the mix, that leaves a mere 6 spell engines on the Dauntless that are not specialized. So while 40 seems like a lot, most are specialized and not part of standard ship operations that you've become accustomed too.

Next post it is into Shelvestra and the heart of the HIVE!

Now what?

"Oh, so you've met her before as well. That's good to know." Onas smiles, feeling reassured.
Valena wrote:“Dull? No, probably not,” Valena says. “It was good to have solid ground under my feet again. Restoring the Mother Tree was a great mystery, one that took several weeks to solve.”
Onas nods. "I've heard bits a pieces of that adventure. Someday it would be good to hear the whole story, though I suspect this is not the time for doing so."

Talen wrote:“I have no idea,” Talen admits.
"I see," Onas says, sounding a bit disappointed. "Seems we truly are venturing into the unknown." 'Personally, I wish we had a bit more information to plan around, but in this case I guess it cannot be helped,' he thinks to himself.
Lothtor wrote:“Acquaintance is more accurate,” Lothtor will say in regards to his relationship with Silvarn. “Let just say that we share similar goals, but use different means to reach them. I must say that it is unusual to find an elf wearing heavy armor. Clan Red Arrow?”
"That seems fair," Onas replies, "though shared goals are often the basis of friendship, in my experience." Lothtor then comments on his armor. "Indeed, Lothtor. You are familiar with the elven clans, then?"
Talen wrote:Talen considers what to say for a moment. “The stone in Shillesta is reddish in color and glows when people are around it. It's full of energy and ready to do something. So I had it make some tables and chairs. I don't think it was smart, but it wanted to do what I asked it too. That probably doesn't make much sense, but the stuff I am learning doesn't make much sense either.”
"Hmm..." Onas murmurs thoughtfully. "That's pretty interesting. Was it more like shaping clay, or more like moving slabs of rock around and getting them to stay where you put them?"

At Lord Sharadin's instruction, they wind their way down through the castle to a large cavern below where they came in from the lake. Illumination has been provided, and some of the guards from the castle are scattered about the cavern. Once there, Talen checks the Pillar.
Talen wrote:“Checking,” Talen answers. “This is very strange... The last time I did this, there were two Pillar Artifacts within Shelvestra. Now I can only sense one! There other is simply not there anymore. I don't understand it. But the one that is active is clear to use. We can go right now, Uncle.”
"I may be paranoid, but that sounds like walking into a trap, to me," Onas says. "We best be prepared to fight."

Talen powers up the portal, and everyone prepares to go through. "If I may, I would like to call on Angharradh for her blessing before we step into the breach." If there is no argument, he will cast Bless on the assembled group.

Kylie Lanthorn the Half-Elven:
Allurien wrote:“Perhaps someday,” Allurien says with a smile. “When things are less hectic. So, in other words, not any time soon.”
Her mother's words draw a chuckle from Kylie. "No, I suppose not. But someday..."

Lothtor wrote:“Lothtor actually,” the man says. “The home before the Elfholds? How interesting.”
"Ah, my pardons, Lothtor," Kylie replies, her cheeks coloring a bit in embarrassment. Fortunately, the queen takes up the conversation and provides more detail, drawing attention away from Kylie's error.
Captain Roma wrote:“I would imagine that the Spell Engines that you've encountered thus far were what we consider 'general use models',” Captain Roma says.
Kylie listens, fascinated, as the Alphatian officer explains the 'Magi-Cannons'. "I will do my best to be well out of the way," she assures the Captain. "Are these projectiles also specialized manufactured items, or something simple like rocks?"
Captain Roma wrote:“Yes, I have heard of them,” Captain Roma admits, her eyes growing wide. “Are you telling me that they are coming to this world? Our world? That they would dare operate in the backyard of the Empire? Such a thing is intolerable! Where is your Sylvan Realm and when were they supposed to arrive? The might of Alphatia will show these scavengers the err of their ways!”
The Captain seems to become rather agitated at the mention of the Talagran. Her reaction is not that different from Silvarn's; both pledged to help in the fight against these slavers. It seems they have made many enemies.
Ma Granite wrote:“I'm surprised that an elf has heard o' Lady Truesilver before,” Ma Granite casually remarks. “Ye say ye traveled with another feanor before? Amazin'. Never heard o' this Grondar Foehammer, but there are many who serve the Revered Mother in their own ways. I see to the well being o' the Goblin Kickers and have for many years. They are my clan now.”
Kylie nods. "And I might well not have, had it not been for Grondar. He eventually split off from our group to travel and explore with some other dwarves. I hope he is well."

Eventually, Lord Sharadin announces that it is time to begin the assault on the Hive. Having seen it before, Kylie knows where they are going, but hovers along near the back anyway. If truth be told, she's a little nervous about the upcoming fight. Still, she's fought them before and with all of the additional help, she expects that things will go well.

After Talen checks the pillars, Silvarn announces that she and her friends will be the first ones through. Onas offers to ask his patron's blessing on the group before they go through. "Sounds good to me," Kylie responds.

when all preparations are complete, Kylie will fly through at the appropriate time, as high off the ground as the portal will allow. Once through, she will fly upward to gain altitude if feasible. While she has her bow with her, currently her hands are free for spell-casting.

Lilia:
Myev wrote:“Okay,” Myev answers without looking away from her work. She's just too engrossed in it to pay attention to what is going on around her.
“That was easy,” Lilia thinks to herself. “At least she is capable of focusing on something.”
Lothtor wrote:“I will have to take you up on our offer some time,” Lothtor answers. “I've always enjoyed my time among the elves.”
“Well, then,” Lilia easily answers, “you'll need to be our guest at some point”
Captain Roma wrote:“Necessary for a warship,” Captain Roma states.
Lilia simply nods her understanding, her mind still trying to comprehend what a warship, any ship for that matter, would need so many Spell Engines.
Kylie wrote:Kylie is stunned speechless for a moment at the mention of forty Spell Engines. On one ship! And it has armaments of some kind. "Captain Roma, pardon me for butting in, but what is a Magi-Cannon? I've never heard of such a thing."
Kylie wrote:“I would imagine that the Spell Engines that you've encountered thus far were what we consider 'general use models',” Captain Roma says.
“Fascinating,” Lilia will say. Clearly the captain was not boasting when she said her ship could level Karn's Keep.
Captain Roma wrote:“That is correct,” Captain Roma confirms. “A know very little about Shiye-Lawr. You elves seem to prefer to live deep in the forests. But they are loyal members of the Empire. King Acroshyre rules them, I believe.”
“I will have to visit there someday,” Lilia states.
“Yes, that is correct,” Lilia confirms in a pleased voice. “Our Seeress has foreseen such a thing. They will arrive in just four days.”

Lilia will lead Captain Roma back to the table with the continent map on it that Sherwood used before to figure out where the Sylvan Realm was. Once locating the area on the huge map, Lilia will point to indicate the area.

“This is where the Sylvan Realm is located at,” Lilia explains. “The ruins of the Elder City is to the north on the other side of these mountains.”

After the mingling, Lord Sharadin gets down to tactics.
Lord Sharadin wrote:“I see,” Lord Sharadin says, taking all of this in. “So there is the possibility of a third Elder City somewhere in the world and that the HIVE could be located at. Another problem that we will have to deal with when the time comes.”
“It is a possibility,” Lilia will agree.
Captain Roma wrote:“Where ever this third city is at,” Captain Roma speaks up, “it must be remarkably well hidden to have gone undiscovered for so long. From what I've gathered, these two known cities are in very out of the way places.”
“Shelvestra had been mostly buried in the ground until recently,” Lilia explains. “Orcs inhabited the ruins recently and dug up much of it. It seems to be in an out of the way uninhabited area. Presumably the situation with the city on the swamp is the similar.”
Captain Roma wrote:“Essentially, yes,” Captain Roma confirms.
“Thus alleviating the need to land the ship to unload or disembark,” Lilia realizes. “Fascinating.”
Captain Roma wrote:“So our ultimate goal is to remove the Hive Queen from the battle,” Captain Roma muses. “Cut off the HIVE'S head and the body dies. Another factor to take into consideration.”
“Yes,” Lilia states, hoping that we are not going to encounter yet another Argent controlled by the HIVE.
Saryn wrote:“We must also save as many innocents as we can,” Saryn unexpectedly adds. “Whatever suffering that the HIVE has unleashed must be stopped.”
Ma Granite wrote:“Aye!” Ma Granite calls out in agreement. “Whatever it takes to stop these beasties!”
“We are all in agreement with that,” Lilia adds.

Talen wrote:“I won't let what remains of the Elder's devices be used in harmful ends,” Talen declares. “I have no problem with those who want to learn what they did. If I can help others in the process, all the better.”
Saryn wrote:“We will assist as best we can in this matter,” Saryn will say. “There will be those who will try to twist this gift to malevolent ends.”
Quirin wrote:“Pity this SSSSSSylvan Realm is ssssso far from my jungle,” Quirin laments. “Too cold for my kind.”
Lilia is pleased that Silvarn's companions are also interesting in protecting the Elder Ruins and Talen. The fact that Quirin dislikes the cold does make the Elf Maiden wonder just what he really is.
Lord Sharadin wrote:“I believe that we are as ready as we can be,” Lord Sharadin announces. “While we humans, dwarves and elves have many differences we also have many things in common. Uniting for the common good is one of them. Together we make the world a better place for all. That is our mission this day. Let us begin.”
“Well said, Lord Sharadin,” Lilia says in a pleased voice.

Soon, we are heading down to the chamber where the Pillar Artifact is located.
“That is strange,” Lilia agrees, also concerned. “It seems that we have no choice on where to enter the city now.”

Talen activates the Pillar Artifact and Silvarn and her allies go through first, followed by Lord Sharadin and the Spell Engine. Before stepping through, Lilia will cast Sixth Sense and Strength on herself. Looking back at the others and with a grim nod, Lilia steps through the portal with her longsword drawn and shield ready.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

As the meeting progresses Lia looks about. Lord Sharadin calls to see if everyone s ready for the travel.
“I am ready when you are.”
Onas steps forward and offers the blessings of his Patron. Seeing to do the same Lia invokes her Patron’s Blessing upon those about her. ( Cast Bless)

Laucian
Having finished his part in the meeting Laucian listens as the others speak of Talen’s worth and how he is to be protected. Laucian cannot help but wonder if it comes to it could he put the young elf down if things go astray. A sombering thought, but one worth the moment as it passes.
Several of the priests begin to cast spells of Bless and other Patron’s spells. Taking but a moment Laucian calls upon Ehlonna as he casts Prayer.
Laucian will have his bow at the ready, an arrow knocked and ready.

Valena:
Onas wrote:"Oh, so you've met her before as well. That's good to know." Onas smiles, feeling reassured.
“Just in passing,” Valena adds. “I was not formally introduced at the time. She traveled with the others when they went after Ember. I stayed behind to help guard the portal. After the battle was over, Silvarn was gone again. She does not seem to stay in one place long.”
Onas wrote:Onas nods. "I've heard bits a pieces of that adventure. Someday it would be good to hear the whole story, though I suspect this is not the time for doing so."
“It is a rather long story that took weeks to play out,” Valena admits. “Too long to delve into right now.”

Finally all the preparations are complete and the mission is set to begin. Valena follows the others down to the lowest depths of Karn's Keep.

“I don't recall coming down here before,” Valena notes. “It really is a cave down here.”

Talen powers up the traveling device and the other start to go in. Valena will let the dwarves pass through and then enter with her bow drawn.

Talen:
Uncle Sharadin wrote:“Good, so arrival is safe,” Lord Sharadin sums up. “But anything after that is unknown. Pretty much what was expected.”
“Yes Uncle,” Talen answers.
Uncle Sharadin wrote:“I see,” Lord Sharadin says, taking all of this in. “So there is the possibility of a third Elder City somewhere in the world and that the HIVE could be located at. Another problem that we will have to deal with when the time comes.”
Captain Roma wrote:“Where ever this third city is at,” Captain Roma speaks up, “it must be remarkably well hidden to have gone undiscovered for so long. From what I've gathered, these two known cities are in very out of the way places.”
“When I was going over the locations of all the Pillar Artifacts that remain, the vast majority of them are in locations that we cannot travel to,” Talen reports. “Its like the land masses were very different back in the Elder's days. Many were underwater or worse. I wouldn't be surprised if this third city was in such a place.”
Saryn wrote:“We will assist as best we can in this matter,” Saryn will say. “There will be those who will try to twist this gift to malevolent ends.”
“Uhm, thanks,” Talen says unsure if this is a good thing or a bad thing.
Quirin wrote:“Pity this SSSSSSylvan Realm is ssssso far from my jungle,” Quirin laments. “Too cold for my kind."
“That's too bad,” Talen silently notes in relief.
Onas wrote:"Hmm..." Onas murmurs thoughtfully. "That's pretty interesting. Was it more like shaping clay, or more like moving slabs of rock around and getting them to stay where you put them?"
“I really didn't think about it that way,” Talen says trying to find the words. “I told them what to do and they did it. They reshaped themselves I guess. It was very weird.”

Uncle Sharadin wrote:“What about the ones at our destination?” Lord Sharadin inquires. “Are they still usable?”
“Checking,” Talen answers. “This is very strange... The last time I did this, there were two Pillar Artifacts within Shelvestra. Now I can only sense one! There other is simply not there anymore. I don't understand it. But the one that is active is clear to use. We can go right now, Uncle.”
Onas wrote:"I may be paranoid, but that sounds like walking into a trap, to me," Onas says. "We best be prepared to fight."
“Hard to say,” Talen admits. “It's just changed from a few days ago.”
Uncle Sharadin wrote:“Go ahead and do so, Talen,” Lord Sharadin commands. “Everyone get ready! We are about to depart!”
“All right, Goblin Kickers!” Lieutenant Stonebeard calls out. “Get ready ta go inta the belly o' the beast!”

The Goblin Kickers start to rap their weapons on their shields in preparation.
Talen nearly jumps when the dwarves start to pound on their shields. “Must be a dwarf thing,” he thinks glancing back.
Silvarn wrote:“We'll go through first,” Silvarn announces referring to herself and her allies. “Then everyone else.”
At Talen's direction, the Pillar Artifact comes to live. Silvarn followed by Saryn, Quirin and Lothtor pass through and are gone.
Uncle Sharadin wrote:“Once more into the breach,” Lord Sharadin says to no one in particular and as he takes a hold of the cart with the Spell Engine and prepares to push it into the Pillar Artifact. “May fortune favor us all!”
Right before Kylie goes through, Talen takes her hand and draws her close. “Stay safe,” he whispers to her before letting her go.

Once everyone else is through the portal, Talen will pass through. Into what, he has no idea.

Onas Brightsword:
Valena wrote:“Just in passing,” Valena adds. “I was not formally introduced at the time. She traveled with the others when they went after Ember. I stayed behind to help guard the portal. After the battle was over, Silvarn was gone again. She does not seem to stay in one place long.”
"Oh. I see..." Onas says as he ponders Valena's response. "I suppose that is common among those of great power or influence."
Valena wrote:“It is a rather long story that took weeks to play out,” Valena admits. “Too long to delve into right now.”
"Perhaps another time, then." Onas seems a bit disappointed, though mostly just resigned. He has always enjoyed hearing tales of adventure and valor. As a child, he would often imagine himself as the hero of the story, as is common among the young.

Talen wrote:“I really didn't think about it that way,” Talen says trying to find the words. “I told them what to do and they did it. They reshaped themselves I guess. It was very weird.”
Talen's response to Onas' question regarding the red rock is quite surprising. "Reshaped themselves... Hmm. Clearly there must be some kind of magic at work."

Valena wrote:“I don't recall coming down here before,” Valena notes. “It really is a cave down here.”
Onas nods when he overhears the Commander of the Silver Maidens. "And quite the cave it is. Without all of these lights, I doubt you could see the walls from the center of the room."
Talen wrote:“Hard to say,” Talen admits. “It's just changed from a few days ago.”
"You mentioned earlier that you had 'locked' the portals, Talen," Onas replies. "I cannot help wondering if this indicates that they discovered that 'locking' and responded to it somehow."

A few of the other priests mention casting their own Bless or Prayer spells. From his training, he understood that such spells did not add their effects one on top of the other. Since he suspects that they are more skilled priests than himself, he will hold off on casting unless they are not able to affect the entire group.

As the portal opens and Silvarn and her friends pass through, Onas readies his sword and shield. The Frost Brand emits a pale blue-white glow and a slight chill to the air immediately around it. Remembering an old Red Arrow war chant that he learned growing up, Onas states, "We meet the enemy with honor and courage." When the time comes, he steps boldly through the portal and moves to the flank, letting the dwarves have the center of the line.

Kylie Lanthorn the Half-Elven:
Lilia wrote:“Yes, that is correct,” Lilia confirms in a pleased voice. “Our Seeress has foreseen such a thing. They will arrive in just four days.”

“This is where the Sylvan Realm is located at,” Lilia explains. “The ruins of the Elder City is to the north on the other side of these mountains.”
This exchange is quite fascinating to watch. Lilia dangles information out there for the good Captain, like a fisherman baiting a hook. "What should we expect from these slavers in the way of an attack force, Captain? I'm afraid we don't know much about them."
Talen wrote:Right before Kylie goes through, Talen takes her hand and draws her close. “Stay safe,” he whispers to her before letting her go.
Kylie turns and floats down close to floor. Wrapping her free arm around his waist, she smiles and nustles into his shoulder. "You too, Talen. Don't take any unnecessary risks. Okay?" She needs him to come out of this alive.

All too soon it is time to pass through the portal and do their best to wipe out this Hive. Kylie releases Talen and floats back up just over and behind him. She follows him through, then rises into the air for a good view of where they are.

December 7th, CR 571 or Deepnight 29th, 20,519 AP

The meeting and greeting at Karn's Keep continues. Several speak to one of the allies Silvarn recruited, a human appearing man calling himself Lothtor.
Lothtor wrote:“Well, then,” Lilia easily answers, “you'll need to be our guest at some point."
“An offer I will most happily take, Your Majesty,” Lothtor vows.
Onas wrote:"That seems fair," Onas replies, "though shared goals are often the basis of friendship, in my experience." Lothtor then comments on his armor. "Indeed, Lothtor. You are familiar with the elven clans, then?"
“To a degree, yes,” Lothtor admits. “I've visited the Elfholds many times in the past. I seek to acquire knowledge, so I go to places and see things. You pick up a lot after a time.”

Several also speak to the Alphatian Captain Roma.
Kylie wrote:Kylie listens, fascinated, as the Alphatian officer explains the 'Magi-Cannons'. "I will do my best to be well out of the way," she assures the Captain. "Are these projectiles also specialized manufactured items, or something simple like rocks?"
“The explosive shots are similar to a Fireball spell and are cast from the Spell Engine itself, thus there is a limited firing capacity,” Captain Roma explains. “The hard shots are created by blacksmiths and the Magi-Cannon simply propels them at high velocity. This uses less energy from the Spell Engine and it also won't start fires in the process.”

Captain Roma learns that the Talagran Trading Company is coming to reclaim the Sunflower. The company is from a world called Chass Volzur and was a distant former colony of Alphatia who split from the Empire two thousand years ago. This colony are not very popular as Captain Roma seems irritated by their impending arrival.
Lilia wrote:“Yes, that is correct,” Lilia confirms in a pleased voice. “Our Seeress has foreseen such a thing. They will arrive in just four days.”
“Four days?” Captain Roma notes. “Plenty of time to prepare.”
Lilia wrote:Lilia will lead Captain Roma back to the table with the continent map on it that Sherwood used before to figure out where the Sylvan Realm was. Once locating the area on the huge map, Lilia will point to indicate the area.

“This is where the Sylvan Realm is located at,” Lilia explains. “The ruins of the Elder City is to the north on the other side of these mountains.”
Captain Roma studies the map for a few moments taking in the scene. “We will be there in four days,” Captain Roma vows.
Kylie wrote:This exchange is quite fascinating to watch. Lilia dangles information out there for the good Captain, like a fisherman baiting a hook. "What should we expect from these slavers in the way of an attack force, Captain? I'm afraid we don't know much about them."
“They hail from a distant world called Chass Volzur,” Captain Roma explains to Kylie with some disdain. “A former colony of Alphatia who abandoned the Empire during the Civil War. Over time they took to the practice of using elves as slaves which earned them the the hatred of most civilized races. The scurry around in the shadows afraid to come out into the light in fear of those who oppose them. Alphatia for one, the Imperial Elfin Navy for another.”

“As for this particular situation,” Captain Roma continues, “traditionally they would send a large force to capture as many elves as they can. However, such a thing would be noticed by the Empire and they know that. So, they would send a small force in, retrieve their ship and try to get away before being noticed. That's what I would do were I in their place. Their fleet is made up of trading vessels, from what I heard. They could not counter the Dauntless.”

The discussions turn towards the rapidly approaching mission.
Lilia wrote:“Shelvestra had been mostly buried in the ground until recently,” Lilia explains. “Orcs inhabited the ruins recently and dug up much of it. It seems to be in an out of the way uninhabited area. Presumably the situation with the city on the swamp is the similar.”
“While some of the Great Swamp is explored, the outer edges mostly, the middle is mostly unknown,” Lord Sharadin reports. “From what we know the middle is essentially a great bog. No cities were ever noted in the past. Lizard men and other swamp creatures live there in huge quantities. The Streel River keeps most of them from crossing over into Cynalon lands.”
Talen wrote:“When I was going over the locations of all the Pillar Artifacts that remain, the vast majority of them are in locations that we cannot travel to,” Talen reports. “Its like the land masses were very different back in the Elder's days. Many were underwater or worse. I wouldn't be surprised if this third city was in such a place.”
“That makes a great deal of sense,” Lord Sharadin agrees. “The location of this third city could be so inhospitable that even the HIVE could not survive there. They may just be limited to this one Elder City. Better for us if that is the case.”

“Another option,” Captain Roma notes, “is that the Elders could survive underwater. A sunken city may not have been a hindrance to them.”

Into Shelvestra:

The attack group travels to the sub-basement of Karn's Keep and to the Pillar Artifact located there. Given what is now know, it is clear that Karn's Keep was built around the Pillar Artifact as the Elder device has existed for millions of years. The builders of Karn's Keep wanted to study this ancient device.

Everyone gathers near the Pillar Artifact as Talen uses it to determine the conditions at the arrival point. Oddly, Talen can now only sense one Pillar Artifact at the destination, not two like before. Clearly, something has changed in the few days since Talen last checked.

The artifact is fired up and a portal appears. Silvarn and her allies pass through first, followed by Lord Sharadin with the cart holding the Spell Engine captured from the Lady Iris. Sherry and Terry are next followed by the Goblin Kickers. Everyone else soon follows leaving Talen as the last to pass through the portal.

After the glow from the portal fades from your eyes, everyone finds themselves in a very different place. You arrive on the Pillar Artifact as expected, but the terrain around it is very different from the giant chamber of Karn's Keep. The artifact is on a small island that is mostly surrounded by mucky swamp water. One walkway leads away from the Pillar Artifact and deeper into the ruins. The smell of rot and decay are nearly overwhelming.

Half a dozen of the large HIVE ant-men lay strewn nearby by having been quickly taken down by Silvarn and company. Lord Sharadin has moved the Spell Engine just off the Pillar Artifact and the twins have already activated it. A wall of bright golden, but translucent shields now surrounds the entire area. Based on what Captain Roma, those inside the shield can safely pass through and even cast spells through this shield, but to those on the outside it is a solid barrier.

With no threats in the immediate area now that the guards were dealt with, everyone has the chance to look around. The swamp water smells as expected. It is warmer and muggier here than it was back at Karn's Keep. A few buildings can been seen off in the distance buried underneath layers of moss and vines. None of these structures have the same reddish stone that was seen in Shillesta further to the north.

What strikes everyone is that this lost city now sets in what can only be described as a large cave. The Pillar Artifact sits at the back of what you would guess to be an area that was dug out from the muck. The back walls of this area are about 50 yards away from the Pillar Artifact and surround about 180 degrees of it. From there, the cavern widens significantly as it moves further along.

Only a small portion of what would pass for the ceiling overhead is open to the sky. A small silver of daylight filters down in some areas. Water falls into this opening in many places down into the sunken Elder City. Many vines dangle down as well. Best guess would put the closest portion of this rift in the ceiling about a mile away.

“I will need to be underneath that opening to signal the Dauntless,” Captain Roma says aloud. The Captain now wields are large staff in her hands where none was before. She has cast a Fly spell to move around better as well.

The feeling you get is that as the swamp grew larger and wetter, what remained of the city started to sink into the muck. The Pillar Artifact is somewhat muddy in appearance, suggesting that at one point it to was buried in the swamp as well. Much of the area around the artifact was unburied and that the ground around it was deepened to keep it from being flooded.

The lost city is filled with the sounds of insects and other native swamp creatures, but none that sound unique or dangerous. Lilia does not sense any danger in the immediate area. In numerous places there are large, blob like things that hang from the ceiling and dangle from the walls. They are sickly orange in color and glow slightly, giving some illumination to those who cannot naturally see in the dart. Dark shapes can be seen inside these hanging blobs. Many unnatural insect-like growth can be seen off in the distance.

“There were a few guards watching the Pillar Artifact who we dealt with,” Silvarn reports. “There are many creatures around us, but not all of them are necessarily enemies.”

“I ssssenssseee sssseveral beingssss over that way,” Quirin adds pointing off to his left. “They are weak and close to death.”

“Perhaps they are prisoners of the HIVE?” Lord Sharadin suggests. “We should see if they need to be rescued.”

“This place stinks with malevolence,” Saryn states with great distaste. “There is great evil here.”

“There issss a pressssence assss well,” Quirin speaks up as he scans the area with senses beyond your comprehension. “Pssssionic in nature. Weak, but there.”

“Let's move out then,” Lord Sharadin commands. “We'll follow this walkway to the shore. We'll see if those beings Quirin can sense need our aid.”

“Alright, Goblin Kickers to the front,” Lieutenant Stonebeard calls out. “We're movin' out.”

The dwarves get into formation, three across, and start to march down the walkway. Everyone else follows behind, except for Sherry, Terry and Talen who remain behind the shielded Pillar Artifact.

The group is about halfway across the walkway between the Pillar Artifact and the shore when Silvarn and her companions stop suddenly! A loud buzzing sound starts to fill the area. From further ahead a cloud of shapes starts to appear!

“The HIVE know we are here!” Silvarn warns. “A swarm is approaching!”

“And they are not alone,” Lothtor adds pointing to the ground beneath the swarm.

Moving with the swarm are dozens of creatures on the ground. They are too distant to make out clearly, but they must be dozens of the strange ant-men of the HIVE!

GM Notes:

Onas is referring to something that was discussed in private in regards to Bless and Prayer spells. In short, a Prayer is a more potent version of a Bless and the spells do not stack with each other, nor do multiple Bless's. So a Prayer will overwrite a Bless, but a Bless won't overwrite a Prayer. Only one of either spell can be on a person at one time, so both Onas and Lia saved their Bless Spells. Laucian has cast Prayer as indicated.

The swarm that is approaching is made up of those flying insects that latch on to a victims head to control them. There must be hundreds of them! Likewise, the ground force is made up of dozens of the creatures the elves fought up in the Shillesta before.

Now what?

Captain Roma wrote:“The explosive shots are similar to a Fireball spell and are cast from the Spell Engine itself, thus there is a limited firing capacity,” Captain Roma explains. “The hard shots are created by blacksmiths and the Magi-Cannon simply propels them at high velocity. This uses less energy from the Spell Engine and it also won't start fires in the process.”
“A very destructive tool,” Lilia notes.
Captain Roma wrote:Captain Roma learns that the Talagran Trading Company is coming to reclaim the Sunflower. The company is from a world called Chass Volzur and was a distant former colony of Alphatia who split from the Empire two thousand years ago. This colony are not very popular as Captain Roma seems irritated by their impending arrival.

“Four days?” Captain Roma notes. “Plenty of time to prepare.”
“Yes, it is,” Lilia agrees. “It is part of our mission down here. After dealing with the HIVE, we will travel to the Elfholds to gather allies for the battles to come.”
Captain Roma wrote:Captain Roma studies the map for a few moments taking in the scene. “We will be there in four days,” Captain Roma vows.
“I look forward to your arrival,” Lilia states.
Kylie wrote:This exchange is quite fascinating to watch. Lilia dangles information out there for the good Captain, like a fisherman baiting a hook. "What should we expect from these slavers in the way of an attack force, Captain? I'm afraid we don't know much about them."
Captain Roma wrote:“They hail from a distant world called Chass Volzur,” Captain Roma explains to Kylie with some disdain.

Lilia listens as Captain Roma tells Kylie what we should be expecting. While Lilia had visions of having to face an entire armada of slavers, the Captain seems to believe that it will be a smaller force using stealth. Hopefully her version of events is closer to the truth. Than something the Captain said makes Lilia pause.

“Imperial Elfin Navy?” Lilia repeats in confusion. “There is a elfin empire out there?”

Talk turns to the battle ahead.
Lord Sharadin wrote:“While some of the Great Swamp is explored, the outer edges mostly, the middle is mostly unknown,” Lord Sharadin reports. “From what we know the middle is essentially a great bog. No cities were ever noted in the past. Lizard men and other swamp creatures live there in huge quantities. The Streel River keeps most of them from crossing over into Cynalon lands.”
“That is reasonable,” Lilia agrees.
Lord Sharadin wrote:“That makes a great deal of sense,” Lord Sharadin agrees. “The location of this third city could be so inhospitable that even the HIVE could not survive there. They may just be limited to this one Elder City. Better for us if that is the case.”
Captain Roma wrote:“Another option,” Captain Roma notes, “is that the Elders could survive underwater. A sunken city may not have been a hindrance to them.”
“You might be right, Captain,” Lilia adds. “We tend to think of the Elders as being like us. They might be anything but like us.”

Finally, we are off! The group passes through the Pillar Artifact and arrives in the remains of the Elder City. From the looks of it, very little of this city remains as most of it has been buried beneath the swamp. It is warmer here and the smell is offensive. It appears that Silvarn and her friends have dealt with a small group of HIVE who were watching the artifact. The defensive shield is raised.

“This explains why no one knew this city was here,” Lilia says looking around. “It fell into the swamp and was swallowed up. The HIVE must have been busy excavating for many years. I imagine that from above, the rift overhead just looks like an opening in the ground.”
Captain Roma wrote:“I will need to be underneath that opening to signal the Dauntless,” Captain Roma says aloud. The Captain now wields are large staff in her hands where none was before. She has cast a Fly spell to move around better as well.
Lilia does a double take when Captain Roma suddenly has a staff in her hands where there was none before. However, being a officer in the Alphatian Navy means she's probably a potent mage. Just how powerful remains to be seen. Regardless, having a Fly spell active in this environment makes sense. Lilia casts Fly upon herself.
“There were a few guards watching the Pillar Artifact who we dealt with,” Silvarn reports. “There are many creatures around us, but not all of them are necessarily enemies.”

“They are either HIVE or creatures worthless to the HIVE,” Lilia says. “I imagine they have no interest in infecting frogs and toads.”

Lilia raises a curious eyebrow at Quirin's comments. “What do you mean by psionic?”
Lord Sharadin wrote:“Let's move out then,” Lord Sharadin commands. “We'll follow this walkway to the shore. We'll see if those beings Quirin can sense need our aid.”
“Agreed,” Lilia speaks up. “We and the Goblin Kickers can investigate and see if they an be helped.”

“From our experience, those on the ground are not the true danger,” Lilia calls out. “Those head hunters are the ones that will try to infect you, turn you into a HIVE! We should withdraw to the shield and destroy them safely from inside.”
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Onas Brightsword:
Lothtor wrote:“To a degree, yes,” Lothtor admits. “I've visited the Elfholds many times in the past. I seek to acquire knowledge, so I go to places and see things. You pick up a lot after a time.”
"That makes a lot of sense, Lothtor," Onas agrees, nodding. "I hope to have the opportunity to travel and learn as well. My first priority, however, is to make sure that my people become well established again in the Sylvan Realm and see to our defenses. Only then can I consider other options and opportunities."

Stepping through the portal behind the dwarven unit, Onas finds that they are in no immediate danger. The bodies of a few ant-men lie not far away, apparently having been slain by Silvarn and her companions. Looking about, they arrived on a small island within a much larger swampy area. A path leads off toward what appears to be another area of firm ground. The air is warm and humid, and smells like one expects a swamp to smell. However, this swamp exists within a large cave of some kind. In the distance, light can be seen coming down from a rent in the ceiling of the cave. There are many strange growths on the walls and ceiling of the cave, some of which glow a sickly orange color.
Lilia wrote:“This explains why no one knew this city was here,” Lilia says looking around. “It fell into the swamp and was swallowed up. The HIVE must have been busy excavating for many years. I imagine that from above, the rift overhead just looks like an opening in the ground.”
"I suspect that you are right, my queen," Onas replies. "It's unlikely that anyone would have explored down into the rift, and the bugs would have caught them if they had."
Captain Roma wrote:“I will need to be underneath that opening to signal the Dauntless,” Captain Roma says aloud. The Captain now wields a large staff in her hands where none was before.
Shifting his gaze to the Alphatian, Onas takes note of her staff. Perhaps she is a mage, he thinks, Alphatians have a reputation as skilled mages. "Then it will be our job to get you there, Captain," Onas says confidently.

Silvarn and her companions report in. They sense a number of living beings, some of which appear to be in need of help. Others give the sense of being inimical to intruders confirming the expectation of danger. Lord Sharadin gives the order to proceed, and they start to cross the swamp via the raised path in the direction of those who may be prisoners.

About half-way across, a nasty buzzing sound arises, and a large group of flying bugs can be seen moving toward them. Below the flying swarm, several dozen of the ant-men come charging toward them as well.

"We need to get to solid ground to fight! Sharadin, do we go forward of fall back?" Onas calls to the archmage.
Lilia wrote:“From our experience, those on the ground are not the true danger,” Lilia calls out. “Those head hunters are the ones that will try to infect you, turn you into a HIVE! We should withdraw to the shield and destroy them safely from inside.”
"Yes, your majesty!" Onas replies. Glancing behind him, he begins to pick his way back across the walkway, keeping close to those behind him.

Kylie Lanthorn the Half-Elven:
Captain Roma wrote:“The explosive shots are similar to a Fireball spell and are cast from the Spell Engine itself, thus there is a limited firing capacity,” Captain Roma explains. “The hard shots are created by blacksmiths and the Magi-Cannon simply propels them at high velocity. This uses less energy from the Spell Engine and it also won't start fires in the process.”
The captain provides more information regarding her ship and its Spell Engines. Many of the Engines have been converted into a type of artillery that is mounted on the ship. From her description, Kylie suspects that they are capable on doing immense damage. No wonder the Alphatians are considered the most powerful empire on the planet! "I can see where that could be quite useful," Kylie admits.
Captain Roma wrote:“They hail from a distant world called Chass Volzur,” Captain Roma explains to Kylie with some disdain.

That's what I would do were I in their place. Their fleet is made up of trading vessels, from what I heard. They could not counter the Dauntless.”
Kylie listens as Captain Roma fills them in on the likely nature of the Talagran attack. It seems that they are hoping to slip in unnoticed by their powerful enemies, and thus aren't likely to bring a large force. "That is good to hear, Captain. I fear that a large battle could do great damage to the nascent Sylvan Realm. With your help, we should have no trouble stopping them."
Lilia wrote:“Imperial Elfin Navy?” Lilia repeats in confusion. “There is a elfin empire out there?”
"Perhaps it is those Shiye-Lawr elves she mentioned previously," Kylie suggests questioningly.
Lord Sharadin wrote:“That makes a great deal of sense,” Lord Sharadin agrees. “The location of this third city could be so inhospitable that even the HIVE could not survive there. They may just be limited to this one Elder City. Better for us if that is the case.”

Lilia wrote:“You might be right, Captain,” Lilia adds. “We tend to think of the Elders as being like us. They might be anything but like us.”
Kylie follows the conversation, turning her gaze back and forth between the others as they talk. "From what we saw and learned in Shillesta, it seemed that there were at least four different types of Elder. I also got the sense that at least one of them may have been reptilian or amphibious. However, I seem to recall Talen suggesting previously that it would be very difficult to use a Pillar Artifact underwater, as the water around the pylon would be teleported away when the portal opened, then come crashing back in to fill that void."

The time comes, and they plunge through the portal created by the Pillar Artifact at Talen's command. As soon as she is through, Kylie begins to rise higher into the air. As she does so, she gets a good look at their surroundings. They appear to be in a huge cavern filled with a giant swamp. The Pillar they arrived through seems to be at one end of the cavern, with swamp spreading out on the remaining three sides. There is some kind of glowing fungus or... pods... of some kind scattered about that provide some illumination. Having grown up in Dog Alley, the smell of the swamp doesn't bother her at all.

There are a few dead Hive members, who were probably guarding the Pillar, and were killed by Silvarn and her companions. They hadn't left a very strong guard, so hopefully the Hive weren't expecting our arrival. Quirin announces that he senses beings that may be in need of help.

Once the Spell Engine's defensive function is activated to protect Talen and the twins, Arch-mage Sharadin instructs the dwarves to lead the rest of the group across a pathway through the swamp in the general direction that Quirin had indicated. Captain Roma and Lilia both cast Fly spells and join Kylie in the air above the rest of the team.

The dwarves are about half-way across when a buzzing is heard in the distance. Soon, all can see that there is a large swarm of the flying bugs coming their way, and accompanied by a number of the ant-like warriors. Warnings are called out and the group prepare to retreat. Fortunately, Kylie has ascended to a height well over their heads so she's not impacted by the narrow pathway.

With the available firepower the group wields, Kylie isn't particularly worried about the danger that they are aware of. Due to her training, she's far more concerned by the possibility of an additional, less obvious threat. She scans the area all around them, looking for any other threats that may not have been noticed yet.

_______________________________________________________________________
I'm not sure how high the cavern ceiling is, but Kylie would have ascended as much as 50 feet or so, though no higher than about half-way to the ceiling.

Laucian

As Laucian finishes the words to the prayer spell, a waerm feeling begins to come from within and he knows that his patron Ehlonna answer grace them with her blessing. With a final look to the others he pulls an arrow and knocks it. His eyes linger on Gweyr. “Stay safe.” He says as he finally walks through the portal.
Stepping through the portal, Laucian draws his bow as his eyes look about. Silvarn and her companions have cleared away the guards. Their remains litter the ground as Talen and the others get the protective shield up. The smell of stagnant water comes to him as he looks around. “No wonder no one has stumbled upon this..” he says to no one at all as he approaches one of the Hive men’s bodies. He will look over the body and try to determine the weak spots are.
Once finished he looks to the mirky water as the call to move forward as beings are noticed. “Mind the water… We do not know yet may lurk here!” he calls out as his ranger instincts kick in.
As they move forward a swarm of headhunters and a transmuted hive men running beneath them. “Ehlonna be merciful.” He says as he takes in the approaching force.
“From our experience, those on the ground are not the true danger,” Lilia calls out. “Those head hunters are the ones that will try to infect you, turn you into a HIVE! We should withdraw to the shield and destroy them safely from inside.”
“Fall Back to the shield!” Laucian calls out as he hears his queens command. An Laucian follows suit to the protection of the shield.
Once within the spell engine’s protection Laucian will take aim at any Head hunters and begin to thin their ranks with arrows. ( In between shots I’d like him to keep his eyes out for anything that may come from the flanks from the water.)
Til Ehlonna's will be done

Lia
Holding her longsword loosely in her hands she feels a coldness for a moment but then a warmth that begins to over come it. She watches as the Goblin Kickers and the others Bravely step forward into the portal.
Taking a deep breath she steels herself for the coming trials and steps through the portal. The smell of a swamp becomes apparent a moment later as she sees hivemen dead about Silvarn and her companions. A soft glow from above is seen from oddly shaped plans.
“This explains why no one knew this city was here,” Lilia says looking around. “It fell into the swamp and was swallowed up. The HIVE must have been busy excavating for many years. I imagine that from above, the rift overhead just looks like an opening in the ground.”
“And any one foolish enough to come looking would be easily converted to their cause.” She says in return. She notices the hole in the roof, She cannot help but take note of the weather and time of day.

The call to move forward is soon issued and she soon follows the Goblin Kickers forward. As they move forward

Lia’s eyes fo wide as she sees the forming force that emerges from the darkness. She hears Lilia’s call of warning and Follows the Queen to the protection of the shield.

Karn's Keep:

The elves have traveled back to Karn's Keep where they meet their allies in this coalition of races against the HIVE.
Onas wrote:"That makes a lot of sense, Lothtor," Onas agrees, nodding. "I hope to have the opportunity to travel and learn as well. My first priority, however, is to make sure that my people become well established again in the Sylvan Realm and see to our defenses. Only then can I consider other options and opportunities."
“Sound reasoning,” Lothtor will agree. “There is much beauty in the world. As an elf, you would appreciate that. But, alas there is great malevolence as well. Stay on guard.”

Shelvestra:

Using the Pillar Artifact, Talen has brought the attack force into the heart of the HIVE, the sunken Elder City of Shelvestra. From the looks if it, the area around the Pillar Artifact had been buried beneath muck once, but has since been uncovered. The artifact sits on a small island surrounded by a small lake of swamp water.
Laucian wrote:Once finished he looks to the murky water as the call to move forward as beings are noticed. “Mind the water… We do not know yet may lurk here!” he calls out as his ranger instincts kick in.
“I have no intention of going into that filthy water,” Gweyr vows. “Getting the smell out would not be fun!”

The attack force moves ahead. The ceilings of the cave-like chamber are high overhead, so there is plenty of room for fliers to maneuver. Gweyr casts Fly on herself as well so she doesn't have to walk in the mud.

As the group is nearing the shore of the small lake, impending arrivals are noted. Silvarn and her allies seem to possess senses far beyond every one else present.
Lilia wrote:Lilia raises a curious eyebrow at Quirin's comments. “What do you mean by psionic?”
“A type of magic,” Quirin explains without looking towards Lilia. “Magic performed by an act of will, directed sssssimply by onesssss own thoughtsssss. It is rare, but not unheard off.”
Onas wrote:"We need to get to solid ground to fight! Sharadin, do we go forward of fall back?" Onas calls to the archmage.
Before Lord Sharadin can answer, Silvarn speaks up. “Continue to move forward! We'll clear the sky of these 'head hunters'. Quirin, scout ahead and see if you can find the source of the mental energy you are sensing.”
Lilia wrote:“From our experience, those on the ground are not the true danger,” Lilia calls out. “Those head hunters are the ones that will try to infect you, turn you into a HIVE! We should withdraw to the shield and destroy them safely from inside.”
“Let's hold for now,” Lord Sharadin will advise. “Give Silvarn and her friends a chance to whittle their numbers down.”

“Even if a few get past, we have ways to protect ourselves,” Captain Roma adds as she hovers a few feet above ground.

“A Wall of Fire would fry them!” Gweyr adds excitedly.

“Precisely,” Captain Roma replies with a nod.

“I be holdin' ya to that, lass,” Lieutenant Stonebeard cries out. “Hunker down, kickers! Let nothing get past ye!”

Silvarn, Lothtor and Saryn make their way past the Goblin Kickers. Once far enough away, Silvarn transforms like many of you have seen before. In the span of several heartbeats, she changes from a being that is elf-sized into a silver dragon that is over 130' long!

Saryn transforms as well, but he reveals himself to be a gold dragon! In his dragon form, Saryn is an incredible 200' long! But unlike a silver dragon, gold dragons are long, lean and more serpentine. Saryn flies, but lacks actual wings. Instead he weaves his way across the sky like a snake would slither across the ground. Everyone here can sense Saryn's innate goodness.

Lothtor likewise changes, but his form is similar and yet different from the other two. Lothar transforms into another dragon-like creature, but one no one is familiar with. This dragon is smaller than the other two, a mere 80' long. Lothar does have wings, but unlike Silvarn, his arms are part of his wings and his color is a deep blue-gray with steel highlights. Lothtor seems more like a type of giant wyvern.

The three dragons fly ahead towards the approaching cloud of head hunters. They spread out and come in from different sides. Silvarn breathes a cone of what looks like to be icy cold. Any head hunter caught in its wake stiffens up and falls to the ground below. Saryn comes in at a different vector and breathes fire ahead of him. Any head hunters caught in the flames are reduced to ash. Unlike the other two, Lothtor lets out a breath of some gas. But like the other two, any head hunters caught up in the gas stop and fall to the ground. Most of the swarm focuses on the trio of dragons and starts to chase them away from those on the ground.

“Let's move ahead,” Lord Sharadin will call out, taking everyone's attention away from the sight of three dragons in battle.

Quirin did not follow after his companions and remained standing in place. While everyone's attention was focused on the dragons, the unusual man proves that he never really was a man. Those who happen to notice, discover that in Quirin's place floats a feathered serpent with rainbow colored wings. A wave of incredible goodness floods over the area and any who see the feathered serpent stand there in awe. Quirin's true form is the most beautiful thing any of you have ever seen. And yes, that includes unicorns!

“Be ssssave, my friendssss,” Quirins voice says directly into your minds telepathically . The feathered serpent uncoils himself to his full 12' length and flies off to investigate.

“A couatl!” Captain Roma finally is able to call out in awe. “So rare as to be considered only a legend. We have been blessed this day.”

“Lovely,” Ma Granite adds, wiping tears away from her eyes.

“As I was saying,” Lord Sharadin will add as he recovers from what he has seen, “let's keep moving. Prepare to engage those ground forces!”

The Goblin Kickers lead the way towards the shore of the swampy lake. The ground forces continue to get closer and closer. Many were inadvertently taken out from the dragon's breath weapons, but far too many still remain. A few head hunters are noted, but are quickly taken out by the elfin archers. More arrows are sent towards the ground forces rushing towards them.

The dwarves spread out in a semi-circle, protecting those behind them. This will give a protective pocket for archery and spell casting. Arlen Brightsword and Andlin Alastra join the dwarves at opposite ends of the formation, weapons ready.

“This is it Goblin Kickers,” Sergeant Shalecrusher calls out. “Time ta earn your pay! Crush those creepy bugs!”

“Let's get a few Walls of Fire on either flank,” Lord Sharadin commands. “Those who don't want to burn will be forced into a narrow opening to reach us. Let's see how smart these things are!”

GM Notes:
Kulie wrote:I'm not sure how high the cavern ceiling is, but Kylie would have ascended as much as 50 feet or so, though no higher than about half-way to the ceiling.
As noted in post, the ceiling varies in height. The area around the Pillar Artifact is essentially back in a corner, so the ceiling is only 40 or so feet high there. But further out, the ceiling is well over a hundred feet high. This cavern is big and high, large enough for multiple dragons to maneuver in comfortably.

A few of the head hunters are noted among the enemy forces approaching, but not a huge amount. There are dozens more of the ant-me rushing towards you. You'll have one round before the ground forces reach the Goblin Kickers.

As noted in post, Silvarn recruited some very unique individuals. Saryn and Captain Roma had appeared before in the Jylsera game before the part that was shown in the Clash of Empires game here on the forum. Saryn's true nature was never revealed in that game.

Lothtor is what is called a Steel Dragon.

Quirin is a couatl as Captain Roma noted. In Silvarn's very first appearance back in the Frontier Game on Q-Link, she was guarding an expecting couatl. That was Quirin's mate and he is now returning the favor.

Now what?

The news of an elfin empire stuns Lilia for a few moments, but she then finds that to be a comfort. Particularly the part about them being a group of elves that vary in appearance. The rest of the Captain statement about elves long lives and skill with magic make sense. What Captain Roma says does remind Lilia of something that was learned a while back.

“Are the Belcadiz Elves part of this empire?” Lilia asks. “Arret was among the destinations their vessel was planning on visiting before their unfortunate run in with the scro. It seems like we'll be having friendly visitors soon enough.”
Kylie wrote:Kylie follows the conversation, turning her gaze back and forth between the others as they talk.
“That's right,” Lilia adds. “That's what happened to one of the Argent's. She was sent to a Pillar Artifact that was underwater and was killed when the water collapsed on her.”

We arrive in what remains of the Elder City that the HIVE seems to have dug out of the swampy muck. Quirin mentions that he can sense something that he calls 'psionic'.
Quirin wrote:“A type of magic,” Quirin explains without looking towards Lilia. “Magic performed by an act of will, directed sssssimply by onesssss own thoughtsssss. It is rare, but not unheard off.”
“I see,” Lilia responds, taking that in. “Elder writings spoke of what they considered to the six elements of their world. Four we know, air, earth, fire and water. They added mind and will. Were the Elders also psionic in nature? Talen seems to be able to control their devices in a similar fashion. By the will of his mind alone.”

With a swarm of head hunters approaching, Lilia suggests withdrawing back to the protective shield. Silvarn has other ideas.
Silvarn wrote:Before Lord Sharadin can answer, Silvarn speaks up. “Continue to move forward! We'll clear the sky of these 'head hunters'. Quirin, scout ahead and see if you can find the source of the mental energy you are sensing.”
Lord Sharadin wrote:“Let's hold for now,” Lord Sharadin will advise. “Give Silvarn and her friends a chance to whittle their numbers down.”
“As you wish, Lord Sharadin,” Lilia relents. She sheaths her sword, sets her shield aside and draws her Manabow. “Archers at the ready! Take out any head hunters that get close!”

Lilia keeps one eye to the sky while watching as Silvarn and her allies move ahead. Lilia is not surprised when Silvarn transforms into a silver dragon, having seen her dragon form before. It is also not a surprise when Saryn and Lothtor change into dragons as well, but they are different types. Lilia guesses that Saryn is a gold dragon, based on this golden scales. They are supposed to be just and good, like silver dragons, so it makes sense. Lilia has no idea what Lothtor is, but his dragon form is smaller than the others.

The dragons fly ahead and attack the swarm with a variety of breath weapons. Many head hunters are destroyed from the attacks and some of the ground forces as well. The sight is equally awe inspiring and terrifying at the same time.
Lord Sharadin wrote:“Let's move ahead,” Lord Sharadin will call out, taking everyone's attention away from the sight of three dragons in battle.
Lilia moves along with the others, hovering a few feet above the ground thanks to her Fly spell. That's when she notices that Quirin is not a dragon, but rather a large feathered serpent! Lilia is stunned by Quirin that she simply hovers there her mouth wide open. She has never seen anything so beautiful in her short life.
Quirin wrote:“Be ssssave, my friendssss,” Quirins voice says directly into your minds telepathically .

“And I thought I'd never see anything more beautiful than a unicorn,” Lilia wistfully notes.
Lord Sharadin wrote:“As I was saying,” Lord Sharadin will add as he recovers from what he has seen, “let's keep moving. Prepare to engage those ground forces!”
The group moves forward once more and the archers shoot down any head hunters that get to close. Once we reach the shore, the dwarves form up in a circular line with the archers and mages in the middle.

“If you would do the honors, Gweyr,” Lilia calls out, the Manabow still in her hands. If no one else casts a second Wall of Fire spell, Lilia will cast hers.

Lilia will focus on shooting down the head hunters, but will try to keep an eye on what is going on around her as well. If they can force the ground troops into the narrow opening between the Walls of Fire, other area effect spells can be employed to take them out in great numbers.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Onas Brightsword:
Lothtor wrote:“Sound reasoning,” Lothtor will agree. “There is much beauty in the world. As an elf, you would appreciate that. But, alas there is great malevolence as well. Stay on guard.”
Onas nods in agreement. "Always, friend Lothtor. That is the duty of every Red Arrow."

Although Lia and himself had offered to cast a spell of divine protection on the group, Laucian is chosen to do the casting as a result of his greater experience. The power of his patron, Ehlonna, washes over the group. Onas can feel the love and support in her warm embrace.

With the enemy's approach, Onas begins to retreat at Queen Lilia's behest. However, Silvarn and then the archmage countermand that order, causing him to hesitate. A plan to channel the bug-men with fire is put forth, with Silvarn and her companions leading the charge against the attackers. Onas can only hope that they are as powerful and capable as Lord Sharadin believes.

The next few moments clearly demonstrate the reasons for the archmage's confidence. All four of their strange companions begins to shift and change, morphing into what can only be their true forms. The silver-haired elven woman named Silvarn reveals her self to be a silver dragon. Saryn, too, transforms into a dragon, but golden where Silvarn is silver. Also revealed as a dragon is Lothtor, though smaller and of a type Onas has never heard of before.

And then, most astonishing of all, is Quirin. The odd island man metamorphoses like a butterfly into an entity of truly stunning beauty and grace. Diaphanous wings adorn a shimmering serpentine body. Onas begins to sob uncontrollably as the four revealed beings bathe him in a heavenly aura of pure goodness and love. Through his tears, he can just barely watch as the three dragons take to the air and fly toward the approaching enemy, followed by Quirin who heads in a different direction.
Lord Sharadin wrote:“As I was saying,” Lord Sharadin will add as he recovers from what he has seen, “let's keep moving. Prepare to engage those ground forces!”
By the time Onas recovers his wits, most of the flying bug creatures are no more and the rest of his companions are surging forward to meet the bug-men's attack. The dwarves have formed themselves into a protective arc, with Arlen and Andlin capping the ends. While archery is not really his forte, Onas decides that it may be his best option for contributing right now. Thus, he sheathes his sword and readies his bow. With a quick prayer to Angharradh, he begins to fire into the approaching insectoids.

Valena:

The group starts to move out once we pass through the portal. We arrive in what had been a city that was once buried and somewhat uncovered again. The Pillar Artifact sits on a small island, surrounded mostly by swamp water. The lake was probably built so as to drop the water level around the artifact. Guards were posted here but were quickly dealt with by Silvarn and her companions.

We advance down the only route away from the Pillar Artifact and deeper into the city. Silvarn notes other beings are close by, along with those whose live is fading. Evil and something that is 'psionic' is noted as well.

Our arrival does not go unnoticed and enemy forces are approaching! There is flying swarm of 'head hunters' and group troops. Silvarn goes ahead with her friends and they all transform into something else entirely!

“That explains a lot,” Valena mutters to herself. Such as how everyone seemed to instantly trust Silvarn. Being a silver dragon will do that!

But that is not the last surprise, as Quirin changes into a flying feathered serpent of unsurpassed beauty and grace. He really was a snake!

“Wow,” is about all that Valena gets out from such sight. She can't wait to tell River Blossom about this!

The group comes out of its stupor and rushes to reach the shoreline before the enemy arrives. The dwarves secure the perimeter while Lord Sharadin suggests using magic to funnel the enemy into a kill zone.

Valena focuses on using her skill with the bow to bring down any head hunters who get too close, trusting everyone else to do their jobs.

Kylie Lanthorn the Half-Elven:
Captain Roma wrote:“They'll be sent back to their world with their tail between their legs,” Captain Roma vows.
A thoughtful look crosses Kylie's face. "Honestly, I think it would be a mistake to let any of them leave alive -- if we can prevent it. That may just invite further attacks."

Captain Roma explains that the elves are one of the major powers out among the stars. Apparently this is largely a result of their long lives, aptitude for magic, and natural tendency to work together regardless of what world they come from or what they look like. Lilia asks if the elves of the other Mother Tree's world are part of this elven empire. Captain Roma also mentions that they may well come to visit.

"I should like to meet them if they do," Kylie says. "I wonder if there are half-elves on many of these other worlds."
Sharadin wrote:“Sound reasoning,” Kylie,” Lord Sharadin complements. “The nature on how the Pillar Artifact works does seem contradictory to the notion that the Elders could live underwater. A mystery to tackle another time.”
"I agree," Kylie concurs. "There is much more to learn of them, and I will do what I can to help."

Laucian's spell washes over her as they prepare to step through the portal into... whatever awaits them. "Thank you, Laucian," Kylie says with a smile.

Soon after passing through, Quirin reports sensing psionic energy. This leads Lilia to ask what he means by that.
Quirin wrote:“A type of magic,” Quirin explains without looking towards Lilia. “Magic performed by an act of will, directed sssssimply by onesssss own thoughtsssss. It is rare, but not unheard off.”
Lilia wrote:“I see,” Lilia responds, taking that in. “Elder writings spoke of what they considered to the six elements of their world. Four we know, air, earth, fire and water. They added mind and will. Were the Elders also psionic in nature? Talen seems to be able to control their devices in a similar fashion. By the will of his mind alone.”
This exchange causes an idea to occur to Kylie. "I think you're right, Lilia. Does that mean he may be using psionic energy?" she asks, looking back to Quirin.

At first, the approach of the Hive creatures results in an inclination to retreat. However, Sharadin says they should continue to advance. Silvarn, Lothtor, and Saryn move to assault the bugs. Kylie isn't too surprised to see Lothtor and Saryn also turn into dragons, though Saryn proves to be a gold dragon rather than silver, and Lothtor to be a smaller variety that she's not familiar with. All three radiate a sense of goodness and dignity. They quickly decimate most of the flying bug creatures.

On the other hand, Kylie is quite surprised by the change in Quirin as he transforms into a winged snake creature of unsurpassed beauty and grace. So transfixed is she that Kylie loses track of what she was doing and even thinking for several seconds and just hangs there suspended in mid-air.
Captain Roma wrote:“A couatl!” Captain Roma finally is able to call out in awe. “So rare as to be considered only a legend. We have been blessed this day.”
It is the Alphatian's words that shake Kylie from her reverie. "A couatl? I... I've never even heard of such a being before..."
Sharadin wrote:“As I was saying,” Lord Sharadin will add as he recovers from what he has seen, “let's keep moving. Prepare to engage those ground forces!”
Kylie turns at the archmage's words. Shaking herself for a moment, she focuses on the incoming Hive. Most of the fliers are gone, but there are still many of the ant-like warriors. Lilia shouts for the archers to get ready, so Kylie prepares her bow and nocks an arrow. There are calls for Walls of Fire, but Kylie doesn't have that spell in memory today. If any of the flying bugs get dangerously close, she will greet them with Magic Missiles; otherwise, she'll stick with firing arrows.

As she recovers from the revelation of Quirin's metamorphosis, Kylie remembers her previous concerns and checks their flanks and rear to make sure the Hive aren't sneaking in from other directions.

Laucian
“I have no intention of going into that filthy water,” Gweyr vows. “Getting the smell out would not be fun!”
“I can see why you pursued magery rather then the outdoors.” He says with a hint of a smile.
There is talk of retreating to the confines of the protection bubble. Before He moves Silvarn and the others speak up.
Silvarn goes forth with her companions changing into different types of dragons. Silvarn a silver, Saryn a gold dragon and Lothar a steel dragon. The goodness of all the dragons washes over him and he can’t help but keep tears of happiness from his eyes. A serpentine feathered creature is standing by where Quirin once stood, It’s rainbow colored wings. Laucian’s mouth drops and tears he was barely holding back begin to flow. The feeling of goodness within him soars as the creature turns to them and speaks telepathicly to them.
“Be ssssave, my friendssss,” Quirins voice says directly into your minds telepathically . The feathered serpent uncoils himself to his full 12' length and flies off to investigate.
“And you.” He thinks as he wipes the tears from his face.
“Let's get a few Walls of Fire on either flank,” Lord Sharadin commands. “Those who don't want to burn will be forced into a narrow opening to reach us. Let's see how smart these things are!”
“I can entangle those on the ground, Slowing their progress so we do not get swept away by their numbers!”
If Laucian is able and he sees enough growth to warrant his entangle spell he will do so. Placing it so that say the front third of the approaching Bugmen are free and the remaining are hindered or slowed. Otherwise he will use his Bow and arrow on any head hunters that dare to come near.
Til Ehlonna's will be done

Lia

Watching the swarm come ever closer, Silvarn calls for us to move forward as she and her strange companions move forward changing into different dragons and what is later found out to be a couatl.
A strange voice is heard and she looks around as she realizes that Quirin is speaking to them. “You are breathtaking.”she thinks back as she readies her sword and the serpentine feathered dragon moves off to take care of the head hunters.
Lia readies her sword as she steps up behind the center of the line behind the goblin kickers. She will cast magic missile( Cleric bonus 1 of 2) at the head hunters. While she is behind the line she will help where needed on the line with her sword.
The last thing you shall hear is the bladesong of my sword.
