Crucible #19 - "Mysterious Island: Part Three"
On an Island that wasn't there an hour ago, inside a castle that's not really a castle, we find the Vigilant in battle against the Warlord and his forces. The situation has taken a down turn for our heroes as Goldstar has been entranced by the Priestess and forced to attack her own teammates!
Seeing that her Radiation Blast had little effect against Eldrich, Goldstar switches into Neutron Star from and flies after him! Eldrich uses his own magic and quickly disappears, magically transporting himself further away from Goldstar, leaving the gold skinned heroine slightly confused.
Elsewhere, Mini-Flux sees Goldstar being controlled by the Priestess and rushes to engage her. As he rushes across the battlefield, Mini-Flux contacts Blackout and Frostbite via their radio's giving them instructions.
Back with the troops, Blackout pummels another into submission while avoiding several very clumsy attacks directed towards him. Its as if these warriors have no combat skill whatsoever!
Frostbite disengages from the Warlord and skates towards Blackout and the troops, quickly covering the distance with his slides. He throws is hands out and creates a wall of ice around the men.
A moment later, Blackout leaps out of the walled in area, easily clearing the ice barrier surrounding the troopers.
Not too far away, the disfigured Warlord battles Serena. The Knight shifts into a more offensive posture and whacks the Warlord with her sword, tossing him nearly twenty-five feet backwards!
"You are skilled, wench, I will give you that," the Warlord says as he regains his footing. "But none can stand against the brute power of the Warlord!"
As he speaks, the Warlords mace vanishes and is replaced by a bolo. The monarch swings the weapon over his head and then releases it towards Serena. The knight easily avoids the effort.
Serena rushes to engage the Warlord in hand-to-hand combat once more. She swings Blessed Salvation but misses her target. The mace reappears in the Warlords hand and he slams it hard into Serena's side! The Knight is violently thrown to her right and comes sliding to a stop nearly thirty feet away.
Eldrich reappears some sixty feet further away from where he was. He magically causes a force blast to appear behind the Priestess, but misjudges his target and misses. Unfortunately, his attempt is noted and Eldritch is a hovering target.
"Kill him!", the Priestess angrily declares, pointing towards Eldrich. "Destroy him once and for all, my pawn!"
The Black Magus follows the pointing finger, turning to face his opposite number and unleashes a blast of magical force. It twists and turns towards Eldrich and just narrowly misses striking the hovering bronze-skinned man.
The blast continues onward and impacts on the ceiling above and behind Eldrich, causing a large chunk to be blown away. Debris rains down on the hall below. At the same time, the entire castle seems to rumble from the impact. The floor beneath your feet shifts and shimmies for a moment and then is still once more.
The Priestess gets in on the act. She gestures once more and what appears to be a dagger made out of dark lavender energy streaks from her forehead towards the hovering mage! The attack is wide and harmlessly passes by Eldrich.
"Hey! That's no fair!", Goldstar complains after her attack on Eldrich was ineffective and seeing that he moved further away. She surges forward after him once more. With a cry of "Radiation Blast!", she unleashes another ranged attack. Much like the efforts of the Black Magus and the Priestess, Goldstar misses her target.
Eldritch winks out once more.
Mini-Flux picks himself back up from the floor shifting underneath his feet. Undaunted, he continues on to the Queen, wishing that he had a faster way to cross the distance.
Not too far behind him, Blackout throws his rod at the Black Magus once more. His aim is true once more, but this time it harmlessly bounces off the shield of energy surrounding the dark mage.
The Priestess, who was trying to location Eldrich once more, notes the action. Her eyes glow white again and beams of white energy strike Blackout. He feels a stabbing pain in his head as her will tries to smoother his.
Eldritch reappears behind Goldstar and closer to the Priestess. He conjures another force blast and connects this time. The white energy from the Priestess' eyes vanishes and she is pushed forward. "Blaspheme! I do curse you, heathen!"
Summoning up his will power, Blackout throws off the attempt to control his mind. He shakes his head, trying to clear out the cobwebs.
The Black Magus surveys the battle scene. His eyes lock in on Frostbite. "Yes, the ice elemental will make a nice target…"
A moment later, a blast of fire streaks from the evil mages hands and slams hard into Frostbite! A cloud of steam erupts upon impact, momentarily blinding everyone. When the steam fades Frostbite is nowhere to be scene. All that remains is a puddle of water on the Grand Hall floor…
And back on the mainland…
The police officer will say, "I was speaking of yourself, ma'am, not your daughter. Crime fighting is inappropriate for a minor, even one that can fly."

Lily smiles at the officer. She would guess that he has no children of his own. It's not uncommon for people without kids to realize that everything said around a child must take the child into account. "I'm glad we agree on that much, officer. As for me, my first duty is to my family; still, should I find a way to get some training so that I'm not a danger to everyone around me, I may be able to help out to some extent."
Well, they still need to get on their way, and it looks like things are under control here. "If there's nothing more, officer, we should be on our way. If you need a statement or to contact me as a witness, you can reach me at the DAs office." Lily hands to policeman her card, which includes her work and cellular phone numbers, along with her work email address.

Knocking down yet another of these so-called warriors and dodging awkward attacks, Blackout is glad they are seemingly worthless opponents, but a little disappointed. He is actually relieved when Frostbite "skates" up and times his jump when Frostbite creates his wall of ice, glad to be clear of them.
He drops his darkness power when he lands on the other side and nods his thanks to Frostbite before turning his attention once again to Black Magus.

Frostbite
He slowly backs away from King Otto Not wanted to show his back to the king. As he moves away from the King He turns around and begins skating towards Blackout's "cloud".
The warriors that Blackout are facing seem to wet behind the ears or Blackout is really good as he watches another man fall.
Frostbite gestures and a 6ft wall of ice surrounds the would be warriors. 'hope blackout can clear that' he thinks to himself. Soon after he is answered as he sees his form leap out of the newly created playpen.
Frostbite begins to turn back towards Serena and the king but he catches a glimpse of movement out of the corner of his eye. He turns with his guard up, his eyes widen in horror knowing that there is nothing he can do to defend himself. "Heaven help me" he says to himself.
A blast of fire slams into his chest out as screams in pain. The last thing he sees is steam billowing from his form than his sight goes black and feels no more.

Goldstar snaps out of it!
Goldstar:
Unable to control herself, Goldstar flies after Eldrich. She wishes she could apologize for attacking him, but is unable. Wisely he teleports away beyond Goldstar's reach. Undaunted, Goldstar tries to eradiate him with another Radiation Blast. Fortunately it misses.
Eldrich disappears once more. When he doesn't immediately reappear, Goldstar will slow to a hover and look around. She doesn't want to hurt any of her friends, but right now she can't help it no matter how hard she tries.
Looking down, she sees a flash of fire and Frosty is struck! Steam obscures him for a few moments, but once it is gone all that remains is a puddle of water!! Frosty's been vaporized!!
The sight shocks Goldstar out of her stupor! Anger builds from deep inside and that extra push allows Goldstar to break free of the forces that's been controlling her!
"You-- You-- You--!!", Goldstar sputters unable to find the words to express her feelings of anger and rage. That man in the black robes is NOT nice and will pay for what he did! Seeing the protective energy field around him, Goldstar knows what she must do.
Shifting into Neutron Star form once more, Goldstar streaks in at the evil and nasty mage! I bet he smells too! Her intent is to do a flying move thru through his back. Push her strength and flight for maximum effect.
Right now Goldstar is enraged beyond rational thought and her only focus is to get her hands on this evil man who melted her friend!

What he lacks in skill, this Warlord makes up for in tenacity and determination! The way he magically cycles through weapons makes him a very dangerous foe. Disarming him no longer seems a prudent strategy, as he'll simply summon a different weapon. No, now I must defeat the man.
Serena is sent flying backwards after a particularly nasty hit and lands on the polish floor. As she sits up, Serena sees the devastating attack made upon her icy comrade!
"NO!", the Knight screams in terror and anger. Serena has seen death many times in the past, but will never become accustomed to it. Turning a back to the Warlord, Serena will glare at the tyrant. "So be it. To the death!"
Quickly, Serena will use the time it takes the Warlord to reach her to use her own meager magical abilities. Drawing upon the power of her faith, Serena will boast her strength and agility to assist her in this battle. (+10 to STR, +1 to SPD, + 5" Running)

Eldrich had just been working before; a set plan with the limited magic at his command, calmly with little emotion. With the death of one of his new friends that has changed.
"Black souled demon! Your foul arts are banned in every civilized fragment. Your kind are hunted out everywhere. You will not escape justice here!"
Eldrich's anger is cold while Goldstar's is red-hot! Before Eldrich can make any move, she turns upon the Black Magus with the same intent to crush that had been directed at himself.
I have no pity for you evil mage. What comes now is of your own making.
Since it seems the Black Magus is soon to be a black smear Eldrich continues to assault the Queen, changing spells again.
If she cannot see her foes perhaps she cannot target them. Let us test this theory.
Eldrich will mantain the 1/2 move teleports and Flashblind the Queen. Whether that works or not he will switch back to Indirect EB's

Used to move faster back in the old days, Sarge. 'Course, I did have VC on my tail then...and I was younger too.

"Hold on, buddy," he says near the floor "we're doing the best we can to get you out from under."

The Vigilant pause in shock and horror as they witness the Black Magus seemingly melt Frostbite! Only a puddle of water remains where their ice teammate once stood!
Blackout rushes towards where his friend was in a desperate attempt to locate Frostbite. He drops to his hands and knees near the puddle and appears to be examining the stone floor.
Eldrich pops back into existence once more. Changing tactics, he casts a Flashblind spell at the Priestess. A bright burst of light appears before her face and she appears to be startled and momentarily blinded.
Overhead, the sight of Frostbite being vaporized has shook Goldstar out of her mind-controlled state. Rage in her face, Goldstar shifts into Neutron Star form and streaks in towards the unsuspecting Black Magus!
The gold-skinned heroine collides shoulder first into the back of the enemy mage! Goldstar continues to drive the hapless mage forward after the impact until they collide with the far wall of the chamber. With a sickening crash, both Goldstar and the Black Magus are slam into the wall.
The entire castle shakes once more from the terrific impact. Goldstar bounces backwards from the collision and lands flat on her back, slightly disorientated from the crash. The Black Magnus remains embedded in the wall and is unmoving.
Using the distraction of Goldstar taking out the Black Magus to his advantage, Mini-Flux finally reaches Queen Olivia. Once beneath her, he increases his density and begins to grow. He plows into the Priestess from below and the woman goes flying from the unexpected attack! Queen Olivia goes flying over forty feet and does not rise after landing hard to the castle floor.
Elsewhere, Serena chants the magic words of her spell and draws upon the power of her faith, amplifying her physical attributes.
While the Knight casts her spell, the Warlord closes the ground between them once more. He viciously swings his mace, but Serena completes her spell first and steps away from the attack.
Taking up Blessed Salvation once more, Serena strikes! Moving faster than the Warlord expected, she drives her blade into the armored man's chest! The Holy Sword pierces the Warlord's armor and draws blood! The Warlord steps back from the Knight, a pained and blank look etched upon his disfigured face. King Otto then falls over backwards and is unmoving.
Just that quickly, the momentum of the battle changed and the Warlord's forces are defeated.
Back near Goldstar, a head rises up from the floor beside her. "I thank you," the head whispers in the eerie voice that was heard before. "You have only one task left to free me of their influence for good. Strike the King's crown with your electromagnetic pulse! Please, act quickly!" The head sinks into the floor once more.
The head is gone before Goldstar can even turn to see it. Its words fresh in her mind, Goldstar flies up into the air once more and slows to a hover near the fallen king.
"EM Pulse!", Goldstar cries out. She points her hands toward the King's Crown and a wave of magnetic energy flies forward.
The Pulse hits the crown and electricity arcs about the headpiece for a few seconds before fading away. A small puff of smoke erupts from the crown and rises into the air.
A cry of pain fills the air. The noise seems to come from everywhere. "Thank you", the eerie voice calls out and then slowly fades away. All is now silent.
Suddenly, the entire castle moves and shifts! Before everyone's startled eyes the Grand Hall radical changes and shrinks dramatically in size. Most everyone is able to keep their feet.
The hall has shrunk to a size of forty feet wide by fifty feet long. The raised dais where the King and Queens thrones were place is now in the middle of the far wall. In the opposite wall are the double doors you first passed through to enter this place. The long hallway you passed through no longer exists.
The only source of illumination, in addition to Goldstar's glowing glitters, are several flaming braziers. Several other single doors lead out of this chamber. The interior now appears to be a genuine and primitive castle.
Even more surprising, Frostbite, in his human form, now lies at Blackout's feet. He does not appear to be injured and seems to be asleep.
Lily:
Back on the mainland, Lily has completed her business with the Police in regards to Electra and continues onward. They travel two more blocks without incident. The parking lot where Lily left her car is not that far away now. (Horton's Plaza covers nine city blocks by itself!)
Up a head, Lily spots more trouble. A woman hovers over the street seemingly supported by a miniature whirlwind. As Lily watches, she causes the wind to swirl underneath a station wagon, causing it to rise into the air. Then the woman flings the vehicle through the front window of a drug store.
"Boring! Come on!", the hovering woman complains. "You can't still be hungry?"
The woman's companion simply growls in response. Focusing in on this other woman, Lily can see what appears to be a humanoid feline, complete with orange fur and black tiger strips! She also has long brown hair. The cat-woman is busily gorging herself on the fair of a taco stand. Bits of taco filling can be seen in the fur around her mouth.

Back on the mainland, Lily has completed her business with the Police in regards to Electra and continues onward. They travel two more blocks without incident. The parking lot where Lily left her car is not that far away now. (Horton's Plaza covers nine city blocks by itself!)
Up a head, Lily spots more trouble. A woman hovers over the street seemingly supported by a miniature whirlwind. As Lily watches, she causes the wind to swirl underneath a station wagon, causing it to rise into the air. Then the woman flings the vehicle through the front window of a drug store.
"Boring! Come on!", the hovering woman complains. "You can't still be hungry?"
The woman's companion simply growls in response. Focusing in on this other woman, Lily can see what appears to be a humanoid feline, complete with orange fur and black tiger strips! She also has long brown hair. The cat-woman is busily gorging herself on the fair of a taco stand. Bits of taco filling can be seen in the fur around her mouth.

Eldrich Arcane's target suddenly flies through the air and lands unmoving on the ground. The Black Magus is driven into the wall, unmoving. The Warlord drops from a sword to the chest and is also unmoving.
Eldrich allows his Shielding to fall away as it was due to expire anyway and returns to the ground.

"Now I know what a Flambé dinner feels like." rubbing his head to make the pounding in his head to go away. "You got yourself a deal!"
He looks up at Blackout, "What happened? Last I remember is turning into a melted snow cone." He slowly gets up to his feet shacking the cobwebs off him. He will reassure to the others that he feels okay and can carry on. He begins to look around the room, "Um is it me or is smaller in here?"
"Why do you need a technical check on a crown? You wear them on your head nothing more!" he says in a dumbfounded sort of way. When Flux orders us to secure the prisoners Frostbite will concentrate on turning into his frozen form. "Put them together. I got something that can hold them for a while. He will concentrate on encasing the three medieval misfits in ice. " That should hold em for a while."
He will take a look at the radios and see what he can do to fix them though with no tools or parts there wouldnt be much he can do.

Goldstar makes an impression!
Goldstar:
Enraged, Goldstar streaks towards the unsuspecting Black Magus. "Meteor Strike!", she cries out at the last moment before impact.
Goldie crashes hard into the Black Magus, piercing his protective shield. The shield winks out and the evil spellcaster continues forward propelled by one angry heroine! Before Goldstar can realize what's going on, a wall appears before the pair and they smash into it!
"OOF!", Goldstar mutters with the sudden stop. She felt that even through her protective glitter field!
Goldstar bounces backwards from the impact and lands bottom first on the floor once more. "Boy, I'm gonna be black and blue down there!", Goldstar thinks to herself.
"WHOO!", Goldstar utters as she lays flat on her back looking up at the distant ceiling. She feels dazed and disorientated. (How can anyone tell?) If Goldstar feels like this, then the evil man who melted Frosty must surly feel much worse than this!
Then Goldstar hears the eerie voice speak again. Or is it her imagination?
Still a bit disorientated, the solar-powered heroine flies up into the air once more. Spotting the King laying on his back bleeding, Goldstar flies towards him. Once in range, she cries out, "EM Pulse!" and points her hands at the crown and hopes that something good happens.
The EM Pulse fries the crown and it shorts out. Suddenly, the hypercube is radically compressed into something much, much smaller. A default setting perhaps?
The eerie voice says thanks and does its fade out. "Oh dear, I hope I didn't hurt it! That's what it wanted me to do! Hey! You okay? Hello?"
There is no answer to Goldstar's query.
Coming out of her dazed state, Goldstar looks around and finds the medieval evils have been defeated. "Wow! When did that happen?"
To Goldstar's astonishment, Frosty is back and alive! "Frosty! You're okay!"
Overjoyed, Goldstar flies straight at Frostbite and gives him a great big hug! Happy tears come from her eyes. "I'm so glad you're okay!"
Before she can get all of her emotions out, Goldstar will hug Eldrich as well. "I am, like, SO SORRY that I attacked you! I couldn't help myself! Can you please forgive me?" She looks at Eldrich with her sad, puppy-dog eyes.
Goldstar pays attention when Flux takes command. "I have no idea if my EM Pulse took out the radios or not. Until the castle told me about it, I didn't know I had that ability! I'm not sure just how widespread the affect was I guess that crown was some kind of control mechanism. By frying it, I freed the castle. Or maybe I wiped it out. I don't know, but it wanted me to do that, so it must have known what it was doing. Or I mean, it must have known what it wanted me to do, so it must have been a good thing! Right?"
Goldstar will carry on as Flux directs. If the radios are toast, she'll fly out and wave at the nice man in the helicopter. Otherwise she'll happily explore with her partner. Who was that again?

Serena drives her point home
Serena:
The King falls to Serena's blade. The Knight stands over the defeated Warlord. The wound he was inflicted with was nasty, but not fatal. Grasping Blessed Salvation close, the Knight considers ending the vile man's life here and now. Serena hesitates. The king, while obviously not right in the head, was not completely evil. He was not the mastermind behind what transpired here this day, but was not completely innocent either. Clearly, one of the other two, if not both, was the true intelligence here.
While Serena contemplates the King's fate, Goldstar flies in and strikes his crown with some type of attack. The Knight is confused slightly as miniature bolts of lightning play about the headpiece.
"What is the meaning of this?"
Before anyone can respond, the grand hall twists, contorts, and shrinks dramatically. The inside takes on a smaller, more simplistic appearance. The long hallway is gone and the double doors we passed through are now close by. Looking outside, Serena can see the winding path leading down to the shore.
"Whatever magic that existed inside the castle has been dispelled. Obviously, the crown was a magic item that controlled the spirit of the castle. With it destroyed, the spirit was released and free to depart this plane. I would suspect that the warriors of the Warlord were just parts of the spirit summoned to do battle. They have vanished along with the spirit. I do not sense the presence of the spirit here in the castle. It has been exorcised."
Spotting Blackout and Frostbite standing a short distance away, Serena rushes to their side. "Friend Frostbite! You are unscathed! I feared the worse! I am pleased. I have buried to many friends to do so again."
Flux speaks and Serena listens. "Agreed, comrade. Let us finish our exploration of this edifice. I suspect that it will be much less danger now. Still, we must be on guard for any traps left by the Warlord and his followers."
Discovering Eldrich standing beside her, Serena wills say, "I am pleased that you are uninjured my friend. I find this place most comfortable. Almost something like home. Perhaps we'll be able to make use of it in such a fashion."

Live here? thinks Flux. No thank you. I've had better quarters in barracks! Would make a good base for us to train in though. Have to talk to a lawyer about property law.
"Maybe the systems need to self-repair before we can get a response."
Although if Serena says the 'spirit' is gone maybe there's more to this than I'm guessing.
"Let's take a cautious look behind these doors. Maybe we'll find a control center we can use."
"Serena, is that warlord badly injured? Patch him up if so. We need to turn them over to the authorities later."

Eldrich will not comment on the fact that Blackout resisted completely as that would undermine his attempt to cheer Goldstar up. But he does note it for future reference. Anyone with that much self will is good to have on your side!

"Have you actually lived in a castle Lady Serena? There are few in my homeland and all constructed before the Shattering. I would not find it comfortable even if the elemental servant had remained. Enslaving such is both wrong and dangerous and without magic a castle is difficult to inhabit."
