New Frontiers #7
The adventurers get ready to move out with their bandit captives. Those able to move on their own accord are lined up and ready to begin the short walk to the bandits camp. All that remains is for those Webbed up to be released.
Kylie's Web vanishes first and the men inside easily rounded up. Those men are joined with the others and the group waits once more. Most of the adventurers are on horseback with weapons drawn, covering the nervous bandits.
Almost twenty minutes later Lilia's Web fades out. Unexpectedly, one of the bandits freed from the Web tries to make a run for it. Before anyone can do anything, Sherwood casts a Magic Missile spell. Five daggers of magical energy streak out from his hand and slam into the back of the fleeing bandit ending his life.
Having gotten everyone's attention, Sherwood speaks out, "I am Sherwood the Wizard and I have far more powerful magic then that at my command! Which one of you wants to meet the reaper next?"
Silence is Sherwood's only answer.
"I thought as much. Move out gentlemen and don't try anything foolish."
The rest of the trip to the bandit's camp passes without incident.
The bandit's camp is a short distance off the road and at the base of a row of hills. The camp itself is nothing special. A clear area with a central fire pit with downed tree trunks serving as benches. A collection of riding horses are tethered close by. There are ten of them in total.
Sherra, Kylie, and Laucian move ahead to scout the area for any danger and traps. They find nothing suspicious in the camp and head for the cave opening Sherwood mentioned earlier.
The cave itself is a small tunnel leading deeper into the earth. It travels about forty feet before opening up into a larger chamber. The cave is littered with bedrolls and trash. Several crates are stored in a small side cavern inside are mundane supplies, such as hard rations, cheap wine, replacement arrows, and a few spare weapons and armor. Nearly two-dozen bedrolls can be seen.
The weapons are removed from the cave and necessary provisions added. Once everything is ready, the bandits are herded inside and Sherwood conjures a Wall of Stone. The Wall merges with the existing cave structure and leaves only a small opening at the top for air circulation. It is only large enough for someone to stick an arm through.
With most of the bandits dealt with, Sherwood turns his attention to the two lieutenants. Sherwood casts Charm Person on both men and their attitude immediately changes. Sherwood engages the men in conversation while freeing them from their bonds.
Here's their story:
This is just one of many bandit cells that Lothar organizes. Each cell is assigned a specific area to cover. This group has the side road between Pyris and Twin Forks. Since this area sees few caravans, it is used to help train the more inexperienced bandits.
Neither of the lieutenants, names are Brant and Jermyn, are aware of the leaders or members of any of the other bandit cells. Typically, new recruits train here for a few weeks or months, depending on their skills, before being shipped off to other bandit cells.
All the bandits grew up in poverty in Elcadan and surrounding areas. People coming up in that area usually hate the ruling class and the rich merchants that control the city with a passion. Lothar, and those who recruit for him, use this to gain new bandits, playing off their poor backgrounds. They make it seem like robbing the caravans is a way to get back at those who held them in poverty for so long. Most of these men are frustrated with the ruling class and jump at the chance to 'get even'.
All of the bandits, except for the two leaders, are in their mid to late teens. The leaders are in their early twenties.
Typically this group was used to hit 'easy targets'. That all changed a few days back. Brant and Jermyn were summoned to meet with Lothar. To their surprise two other men where there as well. One was a tall looking warrior by the name of Artur, the other looked like a wizard and was addressed as Arkane.
Lothar seemed unusually nervous and charged the two bandit leaders to ambush any adventuring parties they discovered traveling from Pyris to Twin Forks. The two leaders protested-- they didn't have the proper troops for such a thing, but Lothar wouldn't listen.
And so the bandits were dispatched a few days back. This is a semi-permanent camp for the group. Typically new members ride back and forth between here and Twin Forks. Lothar isn't expecting to hear from this group for four more days at the most.
Lothar has a home in Twin Forks and it serves as his base. It's really only a place to sleep while in town. There is also a small warehouse on the outskirts of town. The bandits bring any captured cargo into the warehouse where it is re-crated and them shipped down river to other markets for sale. They will happily provide a rough map for Twin Forks and note the locations of Lothar's home and the warehouse.
Once the questioning is complete, Sherwood will conjure his magical house for the evening.

GM Notes:
Any other questions for the bandit leaders? Anything else you want to do before calling it a night?
Lilia will be able to Identify only one of the five magic items. It's an ordinary Dagger +1.
The gems are not magical. Those with the appraising ability will consider the gems to be average in appearance and price. Jet usually goes for 10 GP each, Bloodstones 50 GP, and Jade 100 GP.
Also check out the Cynalon Mappage. I've updated and colored the map. Also added the locations for Twin Forks and Ardelphia, the fallen capitol of the Barony of Stony Ridge. (Lady Vera Ardel's homeland.)
I also updated the XP table in the XP thread during the week to reflect the way points were spent.

Kylie:
Kylie watches with interest as her Web dissipates. This is the first time she has used the spell in an actual combat situation and had time to stick around for the end result. With the three victims surrounded by their forces, it's not hard to gather them up and add them to the other captives.
Things go a little less well with Lilia's Web. The adventurers are a little more spread out, and one of those released when the spell ends makes a run for it. Kylie is impressed when Sherwood's spell generates five missiles; truly the mark of an experienced mage.
Exploring the camp takes a little time as the cave proves to be quite large. Kylie searches it carefully for secondary exits, but finds none. The labor of removing the crates of weapons and other non-food items doesn't appeal to her at all, and she pitches in half-heartedly. Still, she and the other archers are not likely to run out of arrows any time soon, at this rate.
Kylie watches carefully as Sherwood casts both the Wall of Stone and the Charm Person. While it's true she won't be able to cast either soon, she enjoys the intellectual exercise of trying to identify elements of the casting that she recognises.
Once the interrogation starts, Kylie quickly grows bored. Only the mention of most having been from Elcadan is of any interest. Kylie goes in search of Lilia, to have that talk the elven woman had suggested. Kylie is particularly intrigued to find out what she might be able to add to her spell book.

Camping with Bandits
Grondar:
Grondar shakes his head sadly as the bandit is slain while trying to escape. Such a waste of life is not easy for the peaceful priest. Grondar wanders over and says a quick prayer over the body before joining the others in escorting the survivors to the camp.
The bandits' story tells him much about this human city of Elcadan. Though he has never been there, he had heard rumors. This tale brings those rumors into focus and helps cement them as fact. It seems that the city may be even worse than he had imagined. So many people with so many unmet needs... A sadness grips Grondar's heart.
Not really one with any expertise in tactics, still, Grondar has participated in his share of battles and is interested in the development of strategy. He listens carefully to the description of Twin Forks and examines the map.
It concerns Grondar that Lothar seems to have known that there would be pursuers. The mention of the warrior and the wizard also give the dwarf pause. However, the town doesn't seem particularly well-defended, so perhaps they can end the battle quickly with a minimum of casualties.

BTW, nice map! I like the addition of color.

Ivy
Ivy:
Ivy stands by nervously as we prepare for the webs to go down. "Please don't do anything stupid", she silently pleads to the captive men. Looking over the men Ivy realizes that they are all young and not yet in their twenties. Their youth and inexperience can lead to making foolish choices such as turning to banditry to survive.
The first Web goes down without incident. Perhaps it is the ease of the men were extracted from Kylie's Web that leaves us lax when the second goes down. One the men, frightened no doubt, tries to make a break for it.
Seeing this, Ivy begins to run after him. Having no ranged weapon of her own, Ivy was guarding the men with her quarterstaff. Dropping her weapon, Ivy attempts to cast Hold Person on the fleeing man
"No! You fool! No harm would have come to you!"
But alas, the warning and the spell attempt come to late and Sherwood ends his escape attempt brutally and efficiently. A look of sadness on her face, Ivy will give the man last rites.
Mounting up, Ivy will ride with the others back to the bandit camp. Ivy will help guard the prisoners. Satisfied that they have enough food and water for the evening, Ivy will exit allowing Sherwood to cast his spell. Finally, they are secured in the cave for the night and no longer a threat.
Ivy will listen to the interrogation, pleased that no threats or violence were used in making the men speak. The bandits' story plays on Ivy's heartstrings. She grew up in Azrellian Orphanage in Elcadan. While the orphanage was in the good part of town, she is all too aware of the slums and the economic conditions of the town.
"These men speak truly," Ivy will quietly add, sadness thick in her voice. "Many in Elcadan feel as they do. The nobility doesn't care what happens to the people in the city and the merchants only care about making a profit. It is an environment with hardly any hope for those not born to privilege."
"You spoke earlier of these men having the choice to leave, Lord Validar. They way these men were raised teaches them that such a thing is not true. In there minds, all the nobility are worthy of scorn and a dagger in the back. That all cities in the Kingdom are like Elcadan where the poor are crushed underneath the boots of the wealthy. In their mind, there is nowhere to go and simple survival is a daily fight."
"You were born to privilege and have no concept of the environment these men and myself grew up in. If you had, then perhaps there would be more compassion in your heart instead of further propagating the image of the nobility caring not for the plight of the poor and powerless."
Excusing herself, Ivy will leave the campfire and go for a little walk. She needs to be alone for a time to clear her thoughts and emotions.

Lilia
Lilia:
Lilia is disappointed that she is only able to determine the enchantment on one of the five items, but it is roughly in line with past accuracy. Standing up, Lilia will hold the dagger up for all to see. "This dagger has a minor enchantment on it to make it more efficient in combat. How should we determine who is to possess this blade?"
(Can't exactly come right out and say that it's plus one, now can I?
)
Storing the other as of yet unidentified magic items, Lilia will mount up and draw her bow to help guard the prisoners. One the man foolishly flees, Lilia attempts to take aim and fire, but Sherwood is faster on the draw. Lilia is impressed to see five Magic Missiles issue forth. Of all the mages she's adventured with and trained with only one other had reached that level of magical prowess. Perhaps there are things the Elf Maiden can learn from Sherwood Elf-Friend after all.
Guarding the bandits bores Lilia, but she remains alert and ever vigilant in her duties. Finally, they are secured for the night. She only half-hearted listens to the bandits' tale and whatever plans come from our attempt to capture Lothar.
Later, she will join with Kylie to discuss things magical and swap spells. Noticing the human mage Chareos sitting by himself, Lilia pauses. After a moment's thought, she steps up to the human mage. "Chareos, although we have not spoken much, you are a mage as well as myself and Kylie. We were going to discuss things magical and perhaps swap spells. Would you be interested in joining us?"
Lilia will politely nod to the young half-elf. "Until this evening then."Kylie nods as Lilia tells of some of her past. It sounds as if this woman is certainly well qualified for such a career - certainly more so than Kylie herself. The elven woman's proposition brings an excited tone to Kylie's voice that she can't entirely suppress. "That would be wonderful, Lilia! I would enjoy that very much. Thank you!"

Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!
Sherwood
Sherwood:
Moving the bandits doesn't play out exactly as Sherwood had hoped. One of them rabbits out as soon as he's freed from the Web. That simply will not do. We can't let him escape to warn Lothar of our impending arrival. The words to his Magic Missile spell comes quickly and the bandit brought down.
It was a regrettable action, but a necessary one. Plus the act will firmly entrench Sherwood's mage skill upon these men, making his later plan all the more effective. The loss of one life my have saved over a dozen others.
The rest of the trip passes smoothly enough. Before casting his Charm spells, Sherwood will explain the nature of the magic to the others to avoid any future complications.
"The spell will make the men consider me to be their best friend. They are not mindless and can fully do their own thinking. They will deeply consider any requests that I make, but will not do something harmful to themselves. Anything that goes contrary to this friendship may break the spell. The duration of the spell is variable. It depends on the strength of will of the target. I may last a few hours or as much as a few weeks. My guess is that it will last at least a week with these two, provided we do nothing to disrupt the spell. So, while Charmed they must be treated nicely and with respect. They should be allowed to sleep with us without being tied down, but posting a guard is a good idea just to be safe."
After making and freeing his new friends, Sherwood will question the men at length, with no doubt the assistance of Validar. Afterwards, Sherwood will ask if anyone has a plan to capture Lothar and complete our mission. Not that Sherwood can't think of one on his own, but he wants to see what ideas the others come up with.
After Ivy makes her speech and leaves, Sherwood will add, "What Ivy says is true in certain places of the Kingdom, especially Elcadan. The roots of the problem run deep and the Crown seems unwilling to get involved in the matter. Hopefully when Victor the 8th takes the throne things will change. Until then we can only manage as best we can."
Later inside the magical 'cabin', Sherwood is secretly very pleased that Lilia, Kylie, and (perhaps) Chareos are getting together to pool their spells. It’s a good sign in his mind and reminds him to adding a few more spells to the mix would be beneficial for future endeavors.
Sherwood will grin, "And you still wonder why I brought you along?"She looks over at Sherwood. "Actually, some of the meals were cooked by me. I learned enough from Jallarzi to be able to imitate her style, though different from what I grew up with."
"Acquiring new magic is something every mage looks forward too. Even myself."Kylie nods, a bit somber. "Yeah, I know it's likely to be a lo-o-ong time, but it gives me something to look forward to."
"We shall have to see how this turns out then. Hopefully for the best.""Perhaps we may even obtain a few retainers for our group on a permanent basis. I am sure we can pay much better than this Lothar for those that prove loyal." Validar will say this loud enough and near enough to the bandits to make them understand the opportunity this presents for them. "As far as getting the remainder to simply walk back to Pyris for their punishment, I am all for that if you are able to accomplish it, Sherwood. I am not so idealistic to believe that we would not see some of these same fools back in their same lifestyle were we to simply let them go. I have no desire to bother with guarding and holding them, so anything that rids us of their presence is desirable to me."
"Padraig? The boy mage my uncle spoke of? Sharadin found him to be rather intelligent, but I know next to nothing of him. Perhaps no one had a Dispel Magic handy? That would explain why you were forced to physically breach the wall. Still, I can't imagine a competent mage not carrying a Dispel Magic spell if they were able to.""Then you are a much better mage than the one known as Padraig that accompanied the Seekers. Truth be told, I did not care much for his brand of magic, nor his attitude for that matter. We closed in a pit we were exploring after vanquishing a fiend of the lower planes, a Greater Baatezu, I think they called it. Regardless, none of the mages in the group were able to dispel the barrier we erected. Or they failed to offer the option."
"Worry not, Laucian. If my plan works they will march directly to Pyris and ask for incarceration of their own accord. Having the reputation of a powerful wizard does have its advantages at time."Overhearing Sherwood asking Validar what should become of those captured. Laucian will speak up. "I would be in favor of disarming, removing everything of value and set them on their way. If their gods see them fit for redemption they will find their way, if not than they would have paid for their crimes."
"No, I haven't explored the cave on my own. So securing it and the camp area is your and the other scouts top priority.""That sounds good to me, Sherwood. Though I would like to search this cave first before you seal them in for the night unless you already have done so." Pushing his hair out of his face.

Lord Corley
Corley:
Lord Corley is content to simply stand guard and watch while others talk and make plans. Once we move out, Corley will mount his warhorse and have his lance at the ready.
At the bandit camp, Corley will assist in helping clean out the cave. "Permit me to do that for you, Lady Sherra and Lady Kylie. With my strength I can easily move these crates. Go outside and help guard the prisoners and I will assist Laucian in removing these items."
Backed by the power of his Ogre Gauntlets, Corley moves the crates around with the greatest of ease.
Later, Corley is content to let the others conduct the questioning of the prisoners. However, he is deeply disturbed by what is said. Ivy and Sherwood's comments just add to that concern.
"Are you suggesting that there are places in the Kingdom where the nobility is not only disliked, but hated? I could never image such a thing! Its unthinkable!"
Seeing how distraught the fair Ivy is, Corley will excuse himself. "I shall make sure no harm befalls the fair maiden."
Hurrying after Ivy, Corley will slow in his approach as he draws closer. "Forgive my intrusion, Lady Ivy. I have never been to Elcadan before, so forgive my ignorance. But is what you say true? Are things really that bad there?"

Chareos
Chareos begins to move those who are not with in the webs placing his quarter staff in their backs as needed. As the first Web fades out of existence the men are rounded up and placed in line quickly and without incident. The second is another story. As the Web fades a bandit makes for escape. Before Chareos arm his sling several beams of energy rack the mans body and he drops unmoving. 'That didn't have to be.' he thinks to himself.
Sherwood Speaks up in a booming voice.
"I am Sherwood the Wizard and I have far more powerful magic then that at my command! Which one of you wants to meet the reaper next
Only silence and stunned faces can be seen and heard among them. He begins to move the men into a line and we are off towards the camp.
Chareos begins to look to the provisions for the bandits night in the cave. Adding food and water as needed. As the others bring tools and other mundane things out of the cave Chareos takes a seat on a bench and begins to sift through the provisions, Noting the bottles of wine he will bring those into the dwelling when the time arises.
The prisoners are moved into the cave. Sherwood begins to cast a spell and soon after they are sealed in by a wall of solid stone. Soon after word Sherwood begins cast a spell among the two leaders and they begin to tell everything what they know. Most of which Chareos makes not of. Finding out that most of these men are from lower walks of life doesn't surprise him much ,though the thought of them being from Elcadan seems to bother him. He begins to think to himself how can these men allow themselves to live under the boot of other men.
After word Chareos takes a seat on the log benches near the fire pit deeply in though about what has just be found out. Lilia walks up unnoticed by him "Chareos, although we have not spoken much, you are a mage as well as myself and Kylie. We were going to discuss things magical and perhaps swap spells.Would you be interested in joining us?"
Chareos glances up from where he was seated "It would be my pleasure." he says without a second thought. " I noticed that you were trying to identify some of the weapons, If you would care for some help,I do have a spell that would help." He gathers his things and goes with Lilia to meet Kylie. Once there he will take out his book and place it on the table for the others to look at.
If Lilia excepts his help he will ask to see the weapons which are unidentified and cast Identify on one of the items.

Laucian
As the first web fades the bandits with in are rounded up quickly and placed under guards. Drawing an arrow to his bow he scans the men's faces. Almost all are visibly scared and pass glances among us not knowing what is to become of them. He cant help but feel a little bit sorry for them. The second Web fades and unexpectedly one amongst them runs as fast as his feet can carry him. Before Laucian can take aim 5 magical beams of energy slam in from behind. Looking for the originator, he looks around his comrades. Sherwood Speaks
"I am Sherwood the Wizard and I have far more powerful magic then that at my command! Which one of you wants to meet the reaper next?"
With that the prisoners are reluctant to give us any trouble and herded like cattle to their campsite.
Laucian moves into the cave with his sword drawn. Hugging the walls in an attempt to make himself a smaller target. The cave is long an after a time begins to widen into a large chamber, he begins to scan the surroundings. Several bedrolls are lying around as well as several crates, as well as waste littered all about. "These men are rather disorderly." Seeing no danger he sheathes his sword and begins to search/remove any tools or weapons that the prisoners might use against them. Whatever he removes from the cave he will place near the fire pit. "If anyone can use any of this they are welcome to it."
Once everything is removed and provisions are added the prisoners are moved within. Sherwood begins to chant an a solid stone wall is formed where the entrance cave used to be.
Laucian walks up to the wall and looks it over not believing his elvish eyes. Turning to Sherwood, "That is a fine trick indeed." He begins to watch Sherwood as he charms the men into talking. As Sherwood begins to free their bonds, Laucian will move along side Validar. "Is that wise for him to do? What if they flee."
Soon after is answer comes as he begins to watch the men be content to just sit and talk. Their names are soon learn and they begin to tell all that they know. Laucian listens to their tale makes notes in his mind as they speak.
As they are willing to provide a map of the town Laucian will ask, "Where are most of your comrades lodgings? How many fighting men were posted there when you left?"
After the interrogation is completed Laucian will walk to the horse that are tethered nearby. He will take notes of which ones are the best among them and relieve this information to the group as a whole.
He will check on Lilia's mount and change the bandages if necessary, speaking soothingly to it as he does so.
Quietly he begins to concentrate on the recent events that have unfolded. He gives thanks that no one among his party was injured or taken prisoner. The peace that follows after a battle is comforting to him. Suddenly a female voice is heard deep with in his consciousness. It is soothing and warm. "You have served me well Laucian but there is still much to be done. Therefore I am granting you more abilities than you currently possess. Use them wisely."
As he finishes his prayers, he rises up from the ground feeling refreshed. He will help with dinner as best as he can, eat sparingly of it, clean up after himself and than go to sleep in the hopes of waking early.

a camp by any other name...
Sherra:
Sherwood's magic cuts down the fleeing bandit before anyone else really had a chance to react. Sherra just shakes her head. "After all the trouble we went through to keep most of them alive."
Sherra rides out and helps scout the campsite and the cave. Even though we are not expecting further danger, she remains alert. Finding nothing she settles in to do some cave cleaning.
As everyone breaks into groups to either discuss spells or listen to the charmed conversation with the lieutenants, Sherra finds herself a suitable tree and perches up within the thicker branches, keeping a full quiver and her bow handy. She will keep watch until everyone prepares to go venture into the magical dwelling for the night, and then she will climb down and join them.

Ivy's Tale of Woe
Ivy:
Ivy is mildly surprised to discover Lord Corley following after her.
"There are those who have the skills to join the guilds and they do live better than most, but work many long hours. Still others survive as best as they can. It is an environment devoid of any hope of improvement. If any place in the world mirrors the dark depths of the abyss, it is the slums of Elcadan. Unless you know what its like to be poor, to go days without any food in your belly, to live like vermin in the most deplorable conditions, then you have no concept what kind of environment these men grew up in."
"There are a great many problems in the Kingdom these days that blissfully go overlooked by the nobility. Too many seek only honor and glory in battle while children go hungry. Not every problem can be solved with a sword, Lord Corley. I suppose that Bards would rather sing about glorious battles and slaying fantastic monsters then composing sonnets to those who help the common man out of his misery. It may not be as glamorous, but it is far more rewarding work."
Ivy is mildly surprised to discover Lord Corley following after her.
Composing her thoughts, Ivy turns back to face the young noble. "My advice is to see the slums of Elcadan with your own eyes. Mere words fail to describe the misery of growing up in such a place. The Duke of Elcadan cares not for the occupants of his city. He's created a City Council to rule in his place composed entirely of wealthy merchants. It is the merchant guilds that hold the true power in Elcadan. The trade practices are solely design to increase the wealth of the merchants and block any outside trade from entering the city. The guilds have a total monopoly in Elcadan and can set prices as they see fit because people have no where else to go.""Forgive my intrusion, Lady Ivy. I have never been to Elcadan before, so forgive my ignorance. But is what you say true? Are things really that bad there?"

Lilia:
Lilia will poor over the others spell books and she places her own tome on the table. She eagerly examines the spells available, finding many not in her own book. (See the Spell List Thread for Lilia's selections.)
Later, the Elf Maiden will thank Laucian for checking up on her mount. She is most grateful for his assistance in this matter.
"Spells are the only way the enchantment on the other four weapons can be ascertained, Chareos. I am not sure if such a thing should be done now, or if it would not be prudent to wait until a later date when we know we will not be seeing battle for a day or two. Regardless, your help is most appreciated."Chareos glances up from where he was seated "It would be my pleasure." he says without a second thought. Lord Corley hears some distrubing things...
Corley:
"I will see for my self, Lady Ivy. This I do promise you."
"The pleasure is mine, milady," Corley will say with a broad smile."Well thank you, kind Sir," Sherra will smile at Corley and remove the armload she had already picked up.
Lord Corley is shocked by what Ivy says. He can't decide if the lovely priestess is being honest or if exaggeration is mixed in with her words. But seeing the pain in her otherwise flawless features, Corley chooses to believe her. (Not to mention that he's a sucker for a pretty face!)Composing her thoughts, Ivy turns back to face the young noble. "My advice is to see the slums of Elcadan with your own eyes. Kylie:
"Thank you, Corley," Kylie says when relieved of the duty for moving crates. This frees her to seek out Lilia for their discussion of magics.
Seeing the human mage Chareos join them at Lilia's invitation, Kylie smiles. "Hi, Chareos. You're most welcome to join our discussion and sharing of spells." As they begin their talk, Kylie focusses in particular on the different schools of magic and the reasons why some are unavailable to some mages. She is especially interested in any thoughts concerning possible ways of opening those limitations.
Once they have concluding their informal symposium and learned their new spells, Kylie will see to the preparation of dinner.
Hearing that the bandit leaders will not need to be bound, Kylie smiles and packs her rope away with the rest of her gear. As usual, she will take the time to properly care for her mount before settling in for the night.

Grondar:
Upon reaching the camp site, Grondar joins Corley in removing the crates from the cave. "Let me help with that. A little solid work is good for the soul, I always say." In truth, he seems to have no greater difficulty with the heavy boxes than Lord Corley.
Once dinner has been eaten, Grondar approaches Sherwood. "I know you are a wise man, Sherwood. However, I am troubled by your actions today. Was it necessary to slay that man? Clearly, there were other ways to prevent his fleeing. For example, given another moment, I could have cast a Hold Person on him, thus ending his flight and allowing us to recapture him without unnecessary loss of life. Similarly, I'm sure many of our band could have found ways to stop him in a less-lethal manner."
As always, Grondar will perform his rites and prayers both before sleep and after. In the morning, he will renew any spells that were used the previous day.

Lilia and things arcane...
Lilia:
"My own chosen field is of Alteration, using magic energy to affect magical changes in myself or in others. Such spells are usually complex, requiring very specific hand gestures, so this area requires excellent coordination. Specialization in this field puts me at odds with Necromantic magic that deals with draining life forces and vitality, magic that I personally find disturbing. Likewise Abjuration magic is beyond my learning. I am told that both schools of magic requires a strong will individual to bring such magicks into affect."
"It's much like ones skill at using weapons. I've had significant training with my short bow, but in doing so I passed up the opportunity to be trained other weapons. It's a matter of personal choice. Should I be very good in one field and weak in others, or equally good in all spheres? I know of no ways to get around these limitations, but the field of study I have chosen affords me a very wide range of spells to select from, so I see no reason to lament not having access to Abjuration or Necromantic magic."
"There are also many different though process on how to group spells together. The standard method is to group them into schools based on the type of magic the spell invokes. These are called the Schools of Philosophy. There are also schools based upon the effect of the magic or by the method or procedure of the spells. Lady Mystra's gift is truly varied in its abilities and wondrous in its mysteries."
The Elf Maiden will consider for a moment. "It seems obvious to me. A generalist mage can access all Schools of magic because they do not favor any one school over another. One who specializes in a particular field of magic gains more knowledge of their chosen field at the expense of learning less in others. Additionally, some of the mage spheres are odds with each other at what they are attempting to do."Seeing the human mage Chareos join them at Lilia's invitation, Kylie smiles. "Hi, Chareos. You're most welcome to join our discussion and sharing of spells." Sherwood
Sherwood:
"What is done is done, friend Grondar and I take no pleasure from the act. If anything good is to come of it, at least I've put enough fear into his comrades. If they act according to as I plan, then they will take themselves to Pyris and turn themselves in. In that regard, the sacrifice of one to save over a dozen others is worth making in my mind. Sometimes it is necessary to do unpleasant things in life to ensure the great good for all."
Sherwood will show a grim look. "I make no claims of being a wise man, Grondar. I have a great deal of experience and I do try to learn from my mistakes, but I am still fallible as the next man. In hindsight, yes the situation could have been dealt with better. I had to prevent him from escaping so it was necessary to invoke magic that took barely but a thought to cast. I acted on instinct, not upon rational thought. Had I known the magic was going to end his life, I would have acted differently."Once dinner has been eaten, Grondar approaches Sherwood. Kylie:
Kylie nods as she listens to Lilia's postulations. Much of it she has heard before from Jallarzi, of course, but it is insufficient to quench her curiosity. "There is much to what you say, Lilia. On the other hand, it seems to me that if some magics are so entirely opposed to certain others, then they should be so for all. How then do those referred to as generalist mages overcome that opposition?
"I, too, am what is sometimes referred to as a Transmuter. I have the same limitation as you. Yet it appears that magics involving conjuration or summoning are also beyond my reach. Why should that be? According to Jallarzi, it probably has some esoteric connection to the details of my specific thought processes, but could also be the result of being half-elven or any of a number of other factors.
"Far too much mystery for my taste."

Grondar:
A serious expression graces Grondar's weathered features as he regards Sherwood. "I do not mean any disrespect or condemnation. I have no doubt you did what you felt was best at that moment. I pray that your plan for the others works as you intend.
"It is my way, and that of my beliefs, to always strive to find a better way. We are taught to regard the value of all sentient life, and to only kill if in defense of self or others. It is a tragic fact that lives are lost in battle, but even those lives are a loss that can never be retrieved. Like you, I take no pleasure in the death of the man I struck down today in combat.
"I should have found another way."

It is a tragic fact that lives are lost in battle, but even those lives are a loss that can never be retrieved. Like you, I take no pleasure in the death of the man I struck down today in combat.
"I should have found another way."
Chareos
"Thank you Kylie, I wouldnt want to pass up on an opportunity to get to know my fellow comrades as well as to further our capabilities."
"It seems obvious to me. A generalist mage can access all Schools of magic because they do not favor any one school over another. One who specializes in a particular field of magic gains more knowledge of their chosen field at the expense of learning less in others. Additionally, some of the mage spheres are odds with each other at what they are attempting to do."
" You couldn't be more right, Lilia." looking up from his spell book. "Magiks of all types have always intrigued me, I thought it would be best to learn as much as possible even though it may limit my potential compared to yourselves.
Chareos begins to scratch his chin thinking at Kylie's question."Maybe it is because they have such a love for magic that they don' care to know all the details of each school. Could be that they have such open minds that they look on every school in the same light. Who knows for sure.

Validar -
Validar is not surprised when the fool takes off running. He is neither surprised by Sherwood's quick response to drop the man as he ran. He was told to listen and he made his choice. Each choice has consequences. Validar is just glad that it was dealt with cleanly and quickly.
Validar does not quite understand the pain that certain of his friends seem to be feeling over the slain bandits. It could just have easily been the other way around. He can see mourning for friends and loved ones, but those who meet you with steel deserve nothing more than steel. They were not defending their homes and they were not forced into this combat. They did so for personal gain and to further their own terrible lifestyle. Validar can only shake his head in wonder.
Ivy - "You spoke earlier of these men having the choice to leave, Lord Validar.
"We all make choices and those choices all have consequences. Certainly people hear stories of other cities in the kingdom. Elcadan is not so closed as you make it sound. Even were they to hate the nobility in Pyris, which is strange to even consider, they must have word of the lifestyle available there to the common man. They are not slaves and they could easily have left in search of somewhere else. They may have a much more difficult life, but they made the simple and poor choice. That choice has its consequences."
Ivy - "You were born to privilege and have no concept of the environment these men and myself grew up in. If you had, then perhaps there would be more compassion in your heart instead of further propagating the image of the nobility caring not for the plight of the poor and powerless."
"Ivy of Azrella, you barely know me and you have no idea of the steps I have taken in order to help the under-priviledged and poor. Not feeling pity for these fools who have chosen a life of banditry does not make me lacking in compassion."
When the interrogation of the bandits' leaders occurs, Validar is not surprised that they have limited information. The important thing is that the bandits are not expected back for some time. "Time is to our advantage now, my friends. We are a mere 2 days ride from Twin Forks and Lothar is not expecting them for two more days than that. This not only is beneficial, but we have time to take other steps as needed. We will not be expected so soon."

Conquer or Die!
VALIDAR -
Validar is pleased to see the mages all conversing together and exchanging information. This may not be a fullfledged adventuring band as yet, but the interaction between us continues to break down the walls of distrust. The more we know each other and each of our capabilities, the better we will be able to complete our mission.
Sherwood - "Padraig? The boy mage my uncle spoke of? Sharadin found him to be rather intelligent, but I know next to nothing of him. Perhaps no one had a Dispel Magic handy? That would explain why you were forced to physically breach the wall. Still, I can't imagine a competent mage not carrying a Dispel Magic spell if they were able to."
"Obviously, he was not as experienced or as skilled as yourself then. I did not agree with his use of magic in battle either. He squandered it when it was not necessary. Perhaps this was just his personality or perhaps he was not as great a mage as he thought."
Sherwood - After Ivy makes her speech and leaves, Sherwood will add, "What Ivy says is true in certain places of the Kingdom, especially Elcadan. The roots of the problem run deep and the Crown seems unwilling to get involved in the matter. Hopefully when Victor the 8th takes the throne things will change. Until then we can only manage as best we can."
"There are pockets of this kingdom that are like a cesspool. Elcadan is truly one of the worst. We have to deal with their wickedness in Pyris on a regular basis. I do not relish them as a neighbor. But Elcadan will not last long, of that I am certain. And I do not think that the crown prince will have to lift a finger to see that course played out," Validar comments.
Validar has been forming a plan for the move into Twin Forks. Later after everyone has gathered together one last time before bed time, Validar will offer his plan up to the group for scrutiny.

The capture of Lothar
VALIDAR -
"I think we should split into two groups. One will go into the town and locate the location of Lothar. The other can either go into town from a different direction or later or else be ready at any expected escape routes."
"It is important to catch him alive, but it appears that he will not be alone. I would like to know a little more of the layout of the town and what possible get away routes the bandits have."
"The first group would be the confront and flushing group. My guess is that someone like Lothar may send his minions to fight for him and seek to flee while the conflict is brewing. Ideally we could locate him outside his lair, as I would not want to be caught in any unnecessry surprises. We may want to do some surveillance as well before we move in in force. We have a few members who seem quite skilled at that." Validar looks over to Kylie and Sherra in particular.
"I think we should take advantage of the two days we have, but also make a night incursion, as less of the townspeople are likely to be caught in the midst of any battles."
"What do the rest of you think? Do we have any specific suggestions?" Validar will look to everyone else for their input, not wanting to control the entire planning stages.
