Operation: Graystone #17

April 13th, CR 569

The enemy force that was dispatched to seize control of the Eagle's Nest outpost has been defeated. Most were sent into the depths of the mountain by way of the ancient dwarven trap. As Wyvern and Chimera Squad discovered, there were numerous threats down there, assuming those sent down even survived the landing. Undead, ghouls as Wimzy called them, were present along with something the group referred to as a 'jelly blob'.

Assuming those perils were circumvented, those down there would have to climb up on the pitons that Kaylessa used to reach the higher caves. More tunnels were discovered that all lead to the ancient dwarf lair. Guarding the entrance was a large dwarf made of stone. Vernar found a ring and was able to control the Stone Dwarf to a point. Using the construct, the gates barring the way were broken through and the dwarven lair proper entered.

It wasn't long until goblins were found in what appeared to be a combat arena. Except down in this arena worgs were menacing a dwarf! Vernar unleashed the Stone Dwarf causing the goblins to stampede. The dwarf was rescued and he introduced himself as Sann Silverbeard, an agent of the dwarven Ministry of Histories, an organization dedicated to studying and preserving history.

As goblins were being trampled and otherwise killed all around them, the combined squads found their way to the exit and departed the dwarven lair. They made their way back to the base of Eagle' Nest only to be beset by the Hextorite enemy force that had just been defeated.

With the danger past, and now joined by the commander and surviving members of Talon Squad, everyone retires to the Eagle's Nest outpost to rest and recover. A Sergeant Crandell has taken command of all the remains of the three squads and is brought up to date on the situation.

Enemy Remains:
Kaylessa wrote:“Perhaps, Perhaps not.” She says evenly looking at the Sergeant. “There was oil broken upon the floor. It might be good not to waste it. We can stack the bodies and burn them upon leaving.”
“Leave the bodies for now,” Sergeant Crandell will decide. “We'll have to dispose of them in some other manner in the morning.”

Bollo's Shield:
Lucyus wrote:“To be impaled by rusted long forgotten spikes, or to roam the dark, wounded and with limited supplies. And that is if a monster does not feast upon you while you slumber.” He recalls the wights, as they feasted on their unlucky prey. “We will need to inform the crown of these, developments. I would not wish such a death on anyone, save a Hextorite.” He says simple as he stows his axe.
Kaylessa wrote:“How many goblins, we cannot be sure. Vernar let a Stone Guardian loose within their ranks. Many goblins died in it’s wake. Others by fire. It is still down there and showed no sign of slowing down when we escaped into the daylight.” She says informing the Sgt of what transpired.
“Then we should consider the rest of these enemies mostly neutralized,” Sergeant Crandell notes. “Good to know.”
Butternut wrote:Sergeant Crandell seems surprised to hear that the outlook is part of a larger complex. Not surprising, as it seems no one has known about the dwarven outpost for a long time. Sann comes out of hiding and talks at length about the dwarven outpost. Butternut finds that she really enjoys his accent. Crandell comes to the conclusion that the enemy may be using it as a staging and storage area. To his mind, stopping it from being used that way may limit their ability to siege Fort Graystone. Erisciana is concerned about their food supplies, and proposes rationing them. If the sergeant is right, then that may be less of a concern. "It did seem like there was a lot more to the dwarven halls down there than what we saw. There were lots of goblins too, perhaps a couple hundred or so, at least Vernar unleashed that dwarven golem on them!"
“I cannot recall hearing reports of anyone who came to the Eagle's Nest outpost vanishing,” Sergeant Crandell notes. “Not that I was fully brief on everything, but scuttlebutt of soldiers vanishing would have made the rounds. I think its safe to assume that anyone sent here never triggered the trap or even realized it was here.”

The Enemy Army:
Lucyus wrote:Taking a deep breath, as several thoughts come to mind. “ If they have passed us then they would not delay they attack on the fort. Or at least I wouldn’t. I would drive my men harder and hit the fort hard and fast before our defenses are fully prepared.” He says more to himself then the Sgt.
“I would tend to agree,” Sergeant Crandell nods. “At best they would send a force to retake the dwarven lair to ensure their supplies are safe. We will not see the full brunt of their army.”
Erisciana wrote:"That is true. The reasonable action would be to ignore it and push on as the damage is already done. The fort will be warned and the enemy will need to press their attack all the sooner. Likely they would send a vanguard of archers to harass the towers and try to cause trouble before the full force arrives. However, from what we know about Hextor and his followers, those curs could very easily decide that our actions harmed their attack and choose retribution. We could be seeing an even larger force come for our heads," she says solemnly.
“Let's hope it does not come to that,” Sergeant Crandell says.

Lucyus wrote:“Flare would be your man to stand as watcher.” He says as he looks back to the ranger. “He is good with a bow and his hawk would be of help in the matter.”
“A hawk you say?” Sergeant Crandell wonders. Turning to Flare he adds, “Keep watch once the day comes. Would your hawk be able to deliver a message to Fort Graystone?”

Vardra wrote:Crandell believes that the enemy will set their pace by the siege equipment and won't get ahead of it, to which Lucyus agrees. Vardra shrugs in response. "From the stories I've heard growing up, Sergeant, orcs and goblins and such are often undisciplined and prone to stupid mistakes. From what you've said, I guess this army has better leadership and control over their troops than many of that ilk."
“Don't believe everything you hear,” Sergeant Crandell counters. “Orcs are as organized and efficient at making war as we are. Goblins are another matter, but under a strong ruler they can be a potent fighting force. Never underestimate them. A rare few can even become as skilled as we are.”
Lucyus wrote:“You are forgetting something, Vardra. Or perhaps you do not know,” he says easily looking between the Sgt and Vardra. “These orcs and goblins were not alone. Do you know the symbol that the priests wore?” he says with a brief pause. ”Hextor,” he spits out,the word feeling venomous in his mouth. ”My sworn enemy. It is why he focused on me when he could have killed Vernar. If you are unaware he is a God of War, focused on massacres, tyranny and discord.”

“If his followers were here, leading these humanoids the it is a safe bet, his followers in part will be leading the other armies,” he says simply as he looks down at the dead priest.
“Agreed,” Sergeant Crandell supports. “All these goblins, orcs and whatever goblinoids that we will encounter, they are all ruled over by Hextorites. They rule by fear and strength. To fail them is to invite death.”
Erisciana wrote:"Hextor is the main driving force for the enemy in the east. This news has even reached to our lands," Erisciana says. "And my temple in particular takes notice of the machinations of that god of conflict and strife. Hextor styles himself as a lord of war." She sneers as she says those words. "His followers play at war like evil children. Capricious. Emotional. Even diabolical. They are dangerous however, to be sure. And powerful. We had been receiving word through the caravans and adventurers that Hextor's power was rising even more. Clearly the stories have been true."

"While the enemy may consist mostly of humanoids: goblins, ogres and more, the leadership is Hextor. And they will not hesitate to sacrifice their underlings to accomplish their goal. Also we should expect them to act from spite, revenge, avarice and hate." Erisciana will pause a moment. "I look forward to defeating their evil pursuits!"
“As the stories go, it is said that they were among those evil factions who united under the banner of Keln himself,” Sergeant Crandell notes. “When the Emperor of Darkness vanished, those under him fought each other for control of what remained of the Frontier Lands. The Hextorites won this battle and from a place they call New Keln they lord over their holdings. There are nightmarish whispers that the ultimate leader of the enemy is a woman called Xanathom. They say she is a child of Hextor himself and has six arms!”
Gerett wrote:"True. But if the woods and rocky rills make them string out their forces, they might have few enough around the catapults that we could ambush one or two and disable it before the bulk of the force can wheel back around. That sort of job would probably take all of us, though, and quite a bit of tactical acumen."
“If we were able to ride out at dawn, then we may be able to carry out such a mission,” Sergeant Crandell states. “We must rest and with each passing hour they move further and further away. As I see it, down the line we will be able to launch such missions. Right now we must secure this installation and make sure the enemy cannot make use of it. Some battles are not won on the battlefield, but away from it.”
Gerett wrote:"Aye, even with catapults a siege takes time, and a sieging army has to account for its own food or it may as well be under siege too. The enemy knows we've got the fort, but they might not know we have found the secret part o' it, so mebbe we can catch 'em off guard if the rations never show up at the battle line."
“Agreed,” Sergeant Crandell notes. “The walls of Fort Graystone are thick. It will take days of bombardment for them to crumble. We have some time and our forces at Graystone are not helpless either.”

Assignments:
Vardra wrote:Before the amalgamated squad beds down, Crandell hands out assignments for the next morning. Vardra is given the task of leading a team to return to the cave entrance and surrounding area to retrieve whatever supplies may still be available, as well as round up the drow if it is still lingering about.. "Sir, if the mounts are still present, what do you want done with them?"
Lucyus wrote:Lucyus looks to Vardra curiously as he asks the question. “One would assume feed and water them. Make sure they are stabled and ready to ride if needed,” the paladin adds looking between the two.
“Precisely,” Sergeant Crandell states in agreement with Lucyus. “Make them ready in case we need to move rapidly. If the stable down below is usable, place them there. Bring up extra food and water. As I understand it there is a stream nearby, so lets refill our enemy water skins. Since there has been no good solution on what to do with the bodies out in the ramp, drag some down with you and dispose of them outside the base of the Eagle's Nest.”
Gerett wrote:"If we're to send folk outside to check on the mounts, that may be a better source of food than the goblins' piles. If this fort was well placed, there's likely to be natural food sources of some sort not too far away. Fresh water, too. Shouldn't take too much extra time beyond rounding up the horses for some skilled folk to forage for greens or berries or shoot us some hares or grouse. It'll be good for us all to get fresh food anyway, if we're to be below for a long time." Gerett realizes as he says this that it probably sounds strange to the others, coming from him. After all, many dwarves spend their entire lives underground. But it was trade and expeditions--from Gerett's group and others--that brought fresh foods and goods from the surface. Though few would admit it, even mountain dwarves would eventually miss the shipments of the sun's produce to complement their gamey livestock and mushrooms.”
“Fine suggestion, Gerett,” Sergeant Crandell compliments. “Make it happen. Are there any hunters here?”

Sann Silverbeard:
Laurel wrote:Laurel lets the men formulate their plans. It's a shame so much knowledge has gotten lost over time. But what is lost can be found and restored to good use, if in the right hands. "I am glad to have made your acquaintance, Sann Silverbeard Agent of the Ministry of Histories. I feel that we are similarly minded and will work well together." Despite the fact that she is technically working for the army Laurel is very excited about this upcoming adventure. It would be good to travel with someone as interested in recovering lost knowledge as she is, and the added protection of so many skilled fighters would be a boon.
“Well met, Laurel o' Felix!” Sann will say in greeting. “Pleased to meet another seeker o' lost knowledge!”

As the two talk, and Sann continues to pet Laurel's cat, Sann will reveal what he knows about this area and what sent him here.

(The following was originally posted in Operation: Graystone #11. Reprinting it here as it pretty much covers everything nicely.)
Sann wrote:“I be an agent for the Ministry o' Histories an' I be on a great mission,” Sann says. “Most of ye know of the Keln Lands to the east of here? What ye now call the Frontier lands? But can you name what that land was before Keln? Anyone?”

“Ye can't! No one knows!” Sann calls out. “That be the mystery I be seekin' to unravel! We dwarves are long lived and have thousands of years o' recorded history. But there be a hole in our history and that hole is what was who lived in the Frontier Lands before Keln. Our records for that area go back a few thousand years, but before that there be nary a thing! It's like a whole civilization just vanished an' all records o' it were erased!”

“While diggin' through our historical records, I found an old entry to places called Bollo's Shield and Bollo's Spear,” Sann continues. “Now I be assumin' that ye have no idea who ol' Bollo was. Bollo was the most miserable despot to ever sit on the Dwarven King's throne! After decades of his foul rule, the dwarves rose up and removed Bollo from the picture. Permanently, if ye be getting' me meanin'. The dwarven senate was formed after that to balance an' reign in the King's power.”

“From what I can tell, ol' Bollo feared the rise of the humans and elves to the east o' the dwarven lands. So he built an observation post to keep an eye on things, that be Bollo's Shield. In case that there be trouble, Bollo's Spear was a dwarven fortress where his armies could launch attacks into the human an' elf lands. When ol' Bollo was removed from the throne, his spear and shield were abandoned as they be on the fringe of the dwarven lands. We didn't have any trouble with the humans o' Cynalon so these bases were all but forgotten.”

“So now ye be wonderin' why I came searchin' for Bollo's Shield,” Sann states. “These places be old enough that perhaps historical records here could have the information I need. Perhaps here I could discover who used to live in the Keln Lands! So that be me quest! Lore an' forgotten knowledge!”

“With the blessin' of the Minstry o' Histories, me and me companions set out to find these locations and perhaps clues to the lost history of the Frontier Lands! We rode south from Fort Karrak to try an' find the spear and shield. The maps I found showed a few roads through the mountains so we could avoid the goblin city at the end o' the pass. After many days o' travel, we found this place and just started to explore when those dung slingers swarmed us!”

“The rest ye all know,” Sann concludes.
“If I understand you correctly,” Sergeant Crandell says to Sann, “then this Bollo's Shield is an observation outpost, while this Bollo's Spear is an actual dwarven fortress? I have to wonder if this fortress was the staging area for the enemy army now down in the past. Other than Gateway, there are no large fortifications in this area. A large army just does not form on its own without support.”

Daytime:

What remains of the night passes quickly. The spell casters turned in first, except for Kaylessa who already had enough sleep before the enemy attack at the campsite. Due to this, the spellcasters are up earlier while the non-spellcasters sleep until later in the day. Everyone rises at different times throughout the day.

Attention is turn to the magic items that were acquire from the enemy forces. Erisciana use her Detect Magic ability to identify any magicks from the remaining gear. The non-enchanted items are moved away and set aside for general use. Sergeant Crandell states that the items are to be use by the adventurers, but normally the CO hands them out. However, he does not know you yet, so suggests another method. A method of choosing who gets what item, but leaving yourself out of the equation. Those who get the most votes gets the item. Everyone gets one item and then the process continues with that remains. The voting continues, but has yet to reach its conclusion.

Down the Ramp:

The group led by Vardra, consisting of Lucyus, Kendell and Wimzy make their way down the ramp. A torch is used to provide light down the otherwise dark ramp. If no other suggestions on what to do with the bodies of the fallen are reach, then a few of the dead are dragged along to dispose of outside.

(Laurel was asked to go with this group, but did not give an answer. Gerett may be coming as well to see to gathering up other food sources.)

The bottom of the ramp is reached and the day outside is bright and sunny, a pleasant change of the underground Eagle's Nest. There are signs of fire damage in the coral are where the mounts were normally stored from last nights battles. The crude wooden fence that was used to keep the mounts in the cave stable was burned and reduced to ash. The water troughs were also damage and are unusable. Those dragging bodies place them off to the side of the now burned out campfire.

The body of the ogre is spotted a short distance away. Vermin have been nibbling on the remains since the battle. The area seems to be deserted of people. The group spreads out to search the immediate area. Horses and mules are noted here and there, but there is no sign of the drow.

With the area seemingly clear, the group starts to round up the mounts. While there are signs that the belongings on some of the mounts were searched, most of the items are still there. More rations are recovered and empty water skins filled. Gerett will find some fruit and berries, even a few mushrooms. There is no game in the area larger than rabbits.

“Move you stubborn mule!” Wimzy cries out as she vainly tries to get one of the mules to follow her. She pulls on the reigns, but seems unable to get the mount to move.

Down the Stairs:

Vernar assembles his team to going exploring down the concealed stairs. This group consists of Vernar, Kaylessa, Butternut and Ren. Since all can see in the dark, to varying degrees, no torches are needed. The secret door is opened once more and it swings open with a screech. There is a way to open the door from the inside, so there is no worry about being trapped on the stairs.

The stairs are coated with dust and filled with cobwebs. Ren leads the way with Butternut following. Vernar is next with Kaylessa bringing up the rear. Ren picks up a spear before departing to use to clear away the cobwebs.

The group slowly makes their way down the stairs. After some twenty feet, the passage turns to the right. This pattern continues on for a very long time as the stairs spiral down into the mountain.

“Mindless repetition again,” Ren notes. “The dwarves did the same thing with the ramp, but this time I won't let my guard down!”

Time passes as the group continues to go down the ancient stairs with Ren searching for traps as he goes. Finally, something different is noted! A faint light can be seen up ahead! As the group rounds a corner, they can see that there is a side passage next to the stairs! The light seems to be coming from this side area. The stairs themselves continue on down the mountain.

The side passage is about ten feet wide and seven feet high and ends about twenty feet in. The walls of the passage become rougher as you go along, more natural in appearance. There are cracks in the ceiling and sunlight is filtering in through them. That is the source of light you can see. At the far end of this area, an iron door is set into the wall. It is locked on this side, but could be opened if you desire.

Eagle's Nest:

Those not on assignment mill about the Eagle's Nest. There is a fireplace in the common area that can be used for cooking or heating the area if needed. The fireplace is vented to the outside, so there is no worry of getting too much smoke.

As the day passes Sergeant Crandell will speak one on one with those here, trying to learn more about the new people under his command.

GM Notes:

Waiting on Gerett to break a few ties in regards to the handing out of the magic items. I am assuming that those who are going out to retrieve the horses or explore the hidden stairs will have those items with them.

What are you going to do with the horses now that the stables are damaged?

There seems to be a great deal of confusion in regards to status in the army. I will refer everyone to the Social Classes article in the support website that I posted back in 2007.

Social Ranks

Basically, regular soldiers in the army have a lesser social status than freemen. Most of the group is made up of freeman, but if you want to say that by joining the army your social status changed, then everyone is now the same social rank.

The follower of Heironeous are heavily intertwined with the army. As noted in the introduction I wrote for Lucyus back in Operation” Graystone #1, he transferred from the elite Heironeous unit and into the Wyvern Squad. You can't transfer if you are not already part of the army. This elite unit sometimes acts as one, but more often than not, they move among other units. They usually work with regular army units, but do not necessarily command then, but can if need be.

The followers of Azrella have a similar status, but are not part of the army command structure. They are mostly there for support. There are also other units dedicated to other deities that I should have mentioned in the past. Such as battle mages dedicated to Mystra and defenders dedicated to Helm. I mostly used Azrella and Heironeous as those faiths were represented in game and had past ties to Gateway in the Frontier game.

Ideally, the players are on equal footing and should choose who leads them, but you guys seem unable to do that. Thus you are stuck with Sergeant Crandell until you can get your act together. This is a game that we play for fun. Drop the pettiness and the bickering. It will ultimately lead to the end of this game.

Now what?

Lucyus
“I would tend to agree,” Sergeant Crandell nods. “At best they would send a force to retake the dwarven lair to ensure their supplies are safe. We will not see the full brunt of their army.”
A thought comes to him as he looks from the Sargent to Sann. “Were there any defenses in the writings and legends of Bollo’s shield and spear?”he asks the dwarf curiously.
“A hawk you say?” Sergeant Crandell wonders. Turning to Flare he adds, “Keep watch once the day comes. Would your hawk be able to deliver a message to Fort Graystone?”
“I hadn’t thought of that.”he says kicking himself mentally. “If we are able to send word. We need to do so soon, telling them of our encounters and what is coming for them.”
Lucyus looks to the Sargent, a furl in his brow as he contemplates what he says of this news. “In time New Keln and all that dwell there will be sought out and defeated.”he says with certainty. “A sixed armed woman descendant of Hextor, should not be allowed to draw breath so her vileness can choke out beloved land. My clergy will not stand for it.”
“We will see it so.” He says simply as he steps to the ramp and heads down, dragging a goblin behind him.
Grabbing the empty water skins and dragging a goblin behind him, Lucyus makes his way down the ramp. As the opening comes closer the brightness of the sun becomes more pronounced causing the Paladin to raise his hand to cover his eyes as the light temporarily causes him to squint.
The damage from the battle is apparent as the crude wooden fence was reduced to ash and the water throughs are beyond repair. “Good as place as any for you.” He says as he drops the goblin’s body. He sees what he assumes is the Ogre’s body and looks it over. He will try to picture fighting one and how to go about it, judging by the sheer size of it, it can do considerable damage standing toe to toe.
Seeing the mules and horses milling about feeding on the grass, Lucyus hears Wimzy struggling with a mule.
“Move you stubborn mule!” Wimzy cries out as she vainly tries to get one of the mules to follow her. She pulls on the reigns, but seems unable to get the mount to move.
A smile comes to the Paladin’s face, “They are indeed stubborn.” He says to the priestess. “I have found that bribery works well on them. Dangle food before them and they will move much easier then trying to move them.” He says as he looks to the stable.
“Looks like we have two choices, Bring the horses and mules up to the outpost or rebuild the stables.” he says to the others.

Kaylessa
“Leave the bodies for now,” Sergeant Crandell will decide. “We'll have to dispose of them in some other manner in the morning.”
Kaylessa listens to the Sergeant and give him a nod. “Till morning then.” She says simply
Talk commences about Hextor and the trails they saw versus other units. Apparently they won, having a choke hold on the Frontier Lands and are based within New Keln. “Who was this Emperor of Darkness and other factions?”she asks curiously not knowing the tale. Xanathom, a name I will not forget.” She says thoughtfully. She can’t help but wonder how they came to get this information or how reliable it is, but if the Army believes it then perhaps it does have merit, she thinks to herself.
The next day, Vernar’s team mates at the door. Kaylessa waits as the others come together. The secret door is opened once more and it swings open with a screech. There is a way to open the door from the inside, so there is no worry about being trapped on the stairs.
The door screeches open causing the elf to cover her ears for the briefest of moments. As the door fully opens Kaylessa notes the opening mechanism on the other side of the door. Atleast they can get out easy enough and without hassle, if there is need too.
“See you soon.” She says as she follows the others into he relative darkness of the passageway. Several minutes go by as the others lead the way. Ren calls out saying that the dwarves built this in the same way.
“Mindless repetition again,” Ren notes. “The dwarves did the same thing with the ramp, but this time I won't let my guard down!”
“They stick to what they know and what works.” the elf says softly.

Kaylessa pulls off her bow and knocks an arrow as she looks over the shorter companions, then back to the stairs leading downward. “Does it feel as though we travelled as far in this passage as the other?”she asks Vernar in front of her. Seeing the daylight she can’t help but ask, “Another observation point?”

Erisciana -

There is talk about what will be the enemy's response now that they have set the warning flag for Graystone Fort to see in the morning and driven off the attempts to halt that action. Crandall believes that they may send a group to guarantee the preservation of their supplies. Erisci counters that they may seek retribution and send a larger force than would be necessary to see to their end.

“Let's hope it does not come to that,” Sergeant Crandell says.

"We will know more in the morning when we can see better from the observation post. If they send force against us as soon as they see the black flag flying, then we would have at most a day to prepare for another attack. Something to consider. Indeed let us hope they do not respond so quickly."

Crandell believes that the enemy will set their pace by the siege equipment and won't get ahead of it, to which Lucyus agrees.

Erisciana listens intently. This was similar to what she was told about the humanoids as well. The goblins were fodder, but the rest were ferocious foes, especially when arrayed in such numbers and led by competent commanders.

The priestess also takes note of this Xanathom. This being was likely another Hextor created vile affront to the Queen of Heavens.

Gerett turned his gaze to the paladin. "I spoke out of turn. I don't know you, or the beliefs of your sect, for that matter. You sound like you've got the right of things, if anyone can. You and Lady Erisciana certainly know what you're about better 'n I do."

"Studying in temple can give one a start to self-awareness, but the journey is not a race and a head start is no guarantee of success."

Gerett stares into space for a moment, mulling over his response. It would be impolite not to finish the conversation--he had started it after all. But he hadn't been banking on doing this much deep thinking on this mission--certainly not this early in the morning. He looks Erisciana in the eye. "Honestly? So far it's seemed like duty is a one-way street. I mean, at least your patron gives you your fancy spells as acknowledgment. I mean, I always got my wages on time. But that's not really duty, is it? Not loyalty...no, loyalty was definitely one-way for me. So what do I want? I think I want goblins not to overtake Greystone. I think I want the villages on the other side of Greystone not to get pillaged and burnt. If I'm going to work my arse off for someone who doesn't know who I am, I'd rather it be a child in one of those villages, than some noble or employer. Does that mean I love the people of those villages? Villages I've never seen and probably never will? By your definition, maybe. I suppose I'm okay with that."

The priestess claps her hands together once and smiles. "Unrequited actions are the first step to understanding how love truly operates. It's duty if it is required. It is a noble act if it is not." She puts her hand on the dwarf's shoulder once more. "This may be enough discussion for one day, err we start a Philosopher's Guild here in Eagles Nest. But when I asked what you want, I didn't mean what was expected of you. I didn't mean your work or your battles or your past endeavors. Think on it. It does not require an answer today or this week or even this year. But consider: you are the main character in the theatre that is your life. What do you want out of that story?" Erisci can see that he is tiring of the conversation and so gives Gerett an out.

She will stand and brush a stray curl from her face. "I simply must do something about this boring shield, magickal though it may be." Erisci excuses herself to the room where the women bunked down. She will grab her backpack and also the newly awarded magickal shield. A few moments later, she is preceded by the sound of her chiming anklets as she moves with purpose back to the main area and sets her burden down on a free table. Crossing one leg under her, she leans forward and rummages through her backpack. She takes out a small cloth and wets it and rubs down the inside of the shield, especially where the shield would touch her while used. Then she places the shield on the table and puts one palm against its face and another on her holy symbol, offering a prayer to the Queen of Heavens. She rummages through her backpack again and eventually she finds some blue ribbon. She wraps it around the hand grip, leaving two streamers dangling down slightly past the edge of the shield. The attaches another bit with two more streamers to the arm strap. Lifting the shield to examine it a bit more, she wrinkles her nose at the attempt to improve the looks. "It will have to do for now," she says, mostly to herself.

Erisci will prepare her armor and stage it in the women's bunk room. She guesses that they will be moving out later today or in the morning at the latest and will be in need of it. Eventually Crandall comes around and asks about her.

"And what brought you so far from home to join a mercenary band?" the sergeant asks.

The priestess leans back in her chair somewhat, a hint of a grin playing at the corners of her mouth. "To be honest I had no intent to be in such a position. I was entrusted with a task to benefit both my family and my temple to seek out potential strategic alliances. Also to learn more about the rise of Hextor in the eastern lands. Hextor is a direct usurper and corrupter of the tenets of Ishtar. I was entrusted with acquiring knowledge about their plans and reporting to the main temple in Huzzuz."

"Unfortunately, the caravan I traveled with was attacked west of Elcadan several times by humanoids raiders. I managed to escape with my two bodyguards, although the caravan seemed to succumb to the attack. Unfortunately those lands are not only teeming with humanoids but apparently also human bandits. Sometime after the caravan attack we were ambushed, my bodyguards sold their lives dearly, but I was taken captive."

"I managed to escape and made my way back to the main road after several days and met up with another caravan from Zakhara. I was now penniless. I traded my priestly skills for what little I was able to procure. Learning of this army and its mission, I grudgingly decided that there was an opportunity to receive some gold and also bring me closer 'to the action'. Hextor would be involved to some degree and likely many influential figures of Cynalon would be gathered. Hardly an ideal plan, but given the circumstances...."

"I see. And what makes you suited for the mission you were given?"

"A fine question," she pauses thinking how much she wants to say at the moment. "I have been dedicated to the temple of Ishtar since my birth. This was a mission of some importance and no small prestige. And my family coordinated with the High Priest to develop the mutual needs of the mission. I have learned well the tenets of my faith. I have commanded soldiers in battle. I am well-versed in the study of various religions and spellcrafts as well. Both Ishtar and Isharia have shown themselves strongly in my life. And I am the youngest of my siblings which makes me available for such a lengthy and involved excursion. It was a perfect plan, I am told." The way she says this last part belies the spoken words themselves, but she does not elaborate. She looks away hoping the sergeant will be satisfied or at least ask a different question.

Vernar -

When Vernar is not keeping watch, he is sleeping. Quite a bit of an adventure chasing the half-orc and coming all the way around again has left him near exhausted. Several of the others are talking about armies, goblinoids and Hextorites, but Vernar puts all of it out of his mind for now. There are other things to focus on. Hubris brings down the greatest of armies, he thinks, then smiles to himself, that or a blade in the back.

Gathering his team, Vernar takes a moment to focus his thoughts. He steadies his breathing and prepares to dive into the dark again. Here's hoping the dwarves made this area roomy as well, he thinks, steeling himself for any tight passages they might encounter.

"I cannot be fer sure," Vernar replies to Kaylessa. "I not be the best dwarf t' be askin' such things as my experiences been more 'bove ground than not." Still, Vernar will attempt to discern how far they have travelled based on what they did previously to see if he can make any comparisons.

To Kaylessa's second question, Vernar then replies, "Could be. They be wantin' t' have options t' investigate an enemy approach or t' launch an attack, or even escape I be bettin'."

Vernar will signal to Ren to see if he can open that door. He wants to give the sergeant all the options available. Also, before they descend any further, he does not want someone to be sneaking up behind them. After all, that's his team's job!

Butternut:
Crandell wrote:“Leave the bodies for now,” Sergeant Crandell will decide. “We'll have to dispose of them in some other manner in the morning.”
The sergeant comes to a decision regarding the bodies, and Butternut nods to acknowledge the decision.
Crandell wrote:“I cannot recall hearing reports of anyone who came to the Eagle's Nest outpost vanishing,” Sergeant Crandell notes. “Not that I was fully brief on everything, but scuttlebutt of soldiers vanishing would have made the rounds. I think its safe to assume that anyone sent here never triggered the trap or even realized it was here.”
Butternut listens to the sergeant's comments regarding the trapped ramp. "That makes sense. From what we've been able to puzzle out about its design, it seems to take a significant number of people crossing at one time to trigger it. A few at a time may not even know that it's there."
Erisciana wrote:"Indeed that is true. Although we do not know how many Hextorites are in the army. Likely a sizable number. But then we also do not know if they are having their own food brought with them or had it stored with the humanoid foodstuffs. I could just as easily see the Hextor filth in their superiority unwilling to keep their food where it could be consumed or contaminated by the humanoids they lead. It is a 'cat in a box' situation. We will know when we know. Too many options to speculate. Therefore we should be cautious until we know that limited food is no longer an issue. There is every reason and motivation to investigate and learn the truth of the situation."
"You're right that we don't know; I was just speculating as to what seemed to make sense to me," Butternut replies. "Only way we'll know for certain is to go look. Hopefully, we'll know in the next day or so."
Gerett wrote:Gerett turned his gaze to the paladin. "I spoke out of turn. I don't know you, or the beliefs of your sect, for that matter. You sound like you've got the right of things, if anyone can. You and Lady Erisciana certainly know what you're about better 'n I do."
Overhearing a bit of the conversation, Butternut walks over and addresses her new dwarven companion. "Of those here, I probably best fit your description of fighting out of hate. I really only signed on for the opportunity to kill goblins," she says with a shrug. "At this point, that's one of my few reasons for living, and I don't see that changing any time soon."
Butternut wrote:Vernar will approach Butternut, eyeing her as she seems to be studying. "You be wantin' t' do that then?" he asks. "Was hopin' t' have you watch my back again if you be up fer it." He says the last with a grin meant to guilt her into coming along, but if she does decide to stay and study spells, he can hardly blame her.
Butternut sighs and closes the book she's perusing. "No, you're right, Vernar. I will always be more warrior than sage, I'm afraid. And my patron, Arvoreen, wouldn't much appreciate me letting you walk into potential danger without watching your back. Let me get my things and I will join you."

The halfling ranger gets up from the table where she had been studying and returns the half-orc's spell-book to Sorvani. "Duty calls," is all she says as she hands the book to him. She then walks over to the room where she slept and gathers up her equipment, then slips her pack on her back. A quick check of her weapons confirms that she is as ready as she's going to get.
Butternut wrote:“Fine suggestion, Gerett,” Sergeant Crandell compliments. “Make it happen. Are there any hunters here?”
Just as she's crossing the room to join up with the team Vernar's putting together, Crandell asks about other hunters in the group. "Uhm, yeah, that would include me, though I just agreed to join Vernar's team exploring the stairs," she says, pointing toward where Vernar, Ren, and Kaylessa are gathering. "Flare is a skilled woodsman as well." Gerett doesn't reassign her, so she goes ahead and joins up with the others. By the time she gets there, they've already opened the hidden door.

As they start down the stairs, Butternut takes up her customary position a little behind and to one side of the person in the lead, which in this case is Ren. She moves as quietly and smoothly as she is able, as per her training, while keeping her senses sharp for anything out of the ordinary. Ren seems a bit distracted as he tries to clear the cobwebs with a spare spear, so Butternut does her best to cover for him.

A faint light ahead proves to be a side passage, though the stairs continue down. The passage appears to end in an iron door. The light is coming from cracks and fissures in the stone, so they must be near the side of the mountain.

Butternut waits quietly as Vernar and Kaylessa discuss their depth and what may be beyond the door. As she has nothing to add, she focuses on listening to their surroundings. Soon, Vernar signals that Ren should attempt to open the iron door. Butternut readies her crossbow and moves about halfway down the passage before stopping. She kneels down and covers Ren in case of trouble.

Sorry, I missed this previously and had to do some digging to find it. Laurel is more than happy to join the group going back down the ramp to look after the mounts.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Laurel rises the next morning and performs her morning orisons. When she has finished she will pull out her panpipes and softly practice a few simple melodies, working on perfecting the purity and tone of each pitch that she plays. After grabbing a bite to eat and making sure that Malf got his night-time snack she will meet up with the group going to inspect the stables and replenish supplies. She trails behind them down the ramp and asks Malfamata, "Do you think that drow is still about? At least it's sunlight out." She squints her eyes against the light, outlining her comrades in black, and exits the mouth of the tunnel.
The first thing that Laurel tries to locate is the horse she had ridden for her perilous journey the night before. Her attention is drawn to Wimzy's outburst:
Wimzy wrote:“Move you stubborn mule!” Wimzy cries out as she vainly tries to get one of the mules to follow her. She pulls on the reigns, but seems unable to get the mount to move.
Lucyus wrote: “They are indeed stubborn. I have found that bribery works well on them. Dangle food before them and they will move much easier then trying to move them.” He says as he looks to the stable. “Looks like we have two choices, Bring the horses and mules up to the outpost or rebuild the stables.” he says to the others.
Laurel will go and check the stables for fodder thinking to herself "It will be useless to do either if we can't feed them." Once she is done with that task she would like to help Garrett locate a water source, hoping that her knowledge of the practice of orienteering will prove to be useful.

Vardra Marcus, PFC:
Crandell wrote:“Don't believe everything you hear,” Sergeant Crandell counters. “Orcs are as organized and efficient at making war as we are. Goblins are another matter, but under a strong ruler they can be a potent fighting force. Never underestimate them. A rare few can even become as skilled as we are.”
"Yes, sir. I'll remember that," Vardra replies.

Erisciana talks about the government of her homelands. It seems that the country's leadership is based in the priestly class, which seems an interesting concept. "I do not know our leaders' thoughts regarding Hextor or any other deities, Erisciana. However, I would be interested to hear more of your land's priestly government when we have more time. Is that what is known as a... 'theocracy'? It is a fascinating concept."

There is further talk of honor, war, religion, and motivation. Vardra offers his thoughts on his own reasons for fighting, and Erisciana suspects he may be offended. "No offense taken, Eri; just my own thoughts on the matter."
Gerett wrote:"I probably just need to see more of the world in general. I don't like operating blind, and the world seems to be a whole lot bigger a field than I've been used to. It's going to take some time to gather it in."
Vardra nods, as he has felt the same at times. "I think I know what you mean, Gerett. Sometimes it is hard to grasp the immensity of it all."

Gerett and Laurel both confirm that they will help with the horses and food gathering. More hands should make the work go more quickly. Just before they leave, Sergeant Crandell clarifies his instructions. "Yes, sir. Will do."

As instructed, Vardra grabs one of the goblins and drags it along down the ramp. To avoid triggering the trap, he sends one half of the group past the trapped section first, then follows with the other half. Now that they have traveled the ramps a couple of times, it seems not so long a trip as it did the first time.

The sight of the ruined stables at the bottom of the ramp is disconcerting. "This is an unexpected problem," he says. "Any suggestions?" Lucyus recommends either taking the horses up the ramp to the outpost, or rebuilding the stables. "Both of those seem like reasonable options. Do any of us have woodworking skills? I'm not sure how long it would take to rebuild something like that."

As he considers the options, another idea occurs to Vardra. "If we can gather enough rope, we may be able to string it between the trees to create a makeshift corral. We just need an area large enough for the mounts to move about a bit and make sure they can reach to stream to drink. What do you all think? Any other ideas?"

Vardra will toss the goblin he brought with him into the ravine off to the side of the road. He'd rather have it out of both sight and smell from the cave entrance. He will do the same with any others that are brought down. With help from Kendell, he will see if they can move the body of the ogre; if they can, it can join the goblins.

They find the horses and mules scattered about, but no sign of the drow, which seems like a good thing to the soldier. Wimzy tries to move one of the mules without much success. Lucyus and Laurel move to help. As the team gathers up the mounts, Vardra will check their saddlebags for any extra rope.

Remembering Erisciana's staff, Vardra approaches Gerett and Laurel. "Before you go off looking for fresh food, could you two take a look for Eri's lost staff in the cave? Your dwarven vision, Gerett, should give you an advantage in the shadowed cave, and Malf should be a big help in searching the tight spots. She described it as being about as long as she is tall, with a blue crystal on one end set into silver. She last saw it near her horse in the stables, though it could easily have gotten moved."

Erisciana wrote:But consider: you are the main character in the theatre that is your life. What do you want out of that story?
Gerett gathers that this is a rhetorical question, and simply nods in response. He is unaccustomed to this much attention, especially with a peer. He gave counsel to his cadre when needed, and very occasionally they would open up to him, but his soldiers had been enough like him that this sort of conversation was quite rare. And it had been a long time since he had been on the receiving end of advice. So he responded the way he had always told his subordinates to respond--retaining the advice but allowing it time to seep before giving his response or even trying to internalize a response.
Butternut wrote:"Of those here, I probably best fit your description of fighting out of hate. I really only signed on for the opportunity to kill goblins."
"Eh, that's different," Gerett said with a shrug. "Even Hexxor priests are people still. Goblins aren't." If there is inconsistency with his thought, Gerett doesn't recognize it. "Hating them's more like hating rain."
Vardra wrote:"I think I know what you mean, Gerett. Sometimes it is hard to grasp the immensity of it all."
Again, Gerett just nods respectfully.

--------------------------------

Vardra, Lucyus, Kendell, Whimzy, Laurel and Gerett head down the ramp to wrangle the horses and acquire some food. He sees the others dragging goblin bodies along and follows suit, finding a rill off the path to toss the body down when they reach the open air. The others seem to have the horses well in hand, so Gerett begins to examine the surroundings in more detail than when they first arrived. Without the cover of darkness, a live ogre, and combat at the top of the stairs, it should be much easier to get the lay of the land. Laurel offers to help search for water, so he nods for her to follow as he begins to wander. If Flare has joined this group, he'll coordinate with him to make sure they hunt efficiently together.

"Get yourself something to eat," he grunts to Mitch. "Uh, not you, Laurel. I'll take care of that. Just, uh, talking to my badger." He calls after Mitch, who has begun to trundle into the brush. "If ye find more'n ye can eat, come back and show me. Mushrooms, greens, anythin' tasty. Grubs, ye can keep all ta yerself."

Gerett will use his knowledge of Mountaineering, Orienteering, and Survival to search for water while he forages and hunts. He'll ask Laurel for her opinions as she seems to be familiar with topography, which offers the best clue to where fresh water can be found. With his crossbow he'll try to bag some hares or any other game he sees. While he's out, he takes Vardra's request to heart and searches for the staff. If Flare and Laurel are with him, he'll ask them to keep their eyes peeled as well.

Eventually Gerett meets back up with the others, who have discovered the stables in a shambles. The idea of rebuilding the stables or at least a corral is bandied about. "Crandall did say our mission is to hold this point. And who knows how long the group will take in the secret chamber. I'm not a carpenter, but I do have experience supervising fortification building. I think we can get something put together." This brings an idea to Gerett's mind. "On that note, some fortifications actually might not be a terrible idea. Eris already mentioned that the enemy might send a reprisal after us when they see the flag, or when they realize their resupply lines are broken. If we're taking the time to build a stables anyway, maybe a day or so, we could think about making this area right in front of the ramp a bit easier to hold. From what I hear, holding the door got a little dicey. Plus if we shore up there again, then any enemy can just let the horses loose again. A stake line here and a watch set would mean we know what's going on out here, and can defend our water supply and horses. Of course, Bollo's Shield is built to defend. But it's a thought, having an extra line out here might make it easier to defend the fort itself. Either way, if we are spending a few more hours or more down here, I'm going to set up some snares. There's no large game here, and it will take a lot of coneys to keep us all fed."

( Looking back on the post it was a little unclear as to what Lucyus was proposing. Furthermore not being able to have the proper tools would limit their work. So editing it.)
“No, sadly I never had the time to acquire that talent.” He says simply. “If we did we would need younger trees, Dig holes to support the posts and place the smaller logs across the posts securing them with rope. It is more so how to cut the trees down that maybe an issue.
As he considers the options, another idea occurs to Vardra. "If we can gather enough rope, we may be able to string it between the trees to create a makeshift corral. We just need an area large enough for the mounts to move about a bit and make sure they can reach to stream to drink. What do you all think? Any other ideas?"
“Not necessarily.” He says simply as he taps his fingers in the palm of his opposite hand. “If we run a rope as you suggest from tree to tree and make the corral with rope, There might not be enough trees or sufficient strength to hold them. Perhaps with some spears from the armory we can adjust the landscape.”
Given this is a dwarven fort, Lucyus will look to Gerret for his insight on the best way to defend it.
Lucyus will continue to help gather the horses while being mindful of his surroundings.
The brown box is where Lucyus is proposing the new corral.

Just a heads up for everyone next new post should be in about two weeks. Just insanely busy right now and something has to give.

I did update what spells the mages learned from the half-orcs book and from each others books last week. I just forgot to mention it in the GM Notes for the last post.

Post Continued:

Magic Items:

At the request of Sergeant Crandell, the combined squads all voted on who should get the magic items taken from the enemy attack force. Some races were close, while others were landslides.

Lucyus receives the magical plate mail armor to replace his chain mail. Kendell gets the magical longsword and Vardra the magical medium shield. Flare gets the 10 magical arrows and Ren two of the three magical daggers.

Butternut is given the enchanted light crossbow while Gerett gets the 10 magical crossbow bolts. Eris receives the small shield. Unlike the larger medium shield, a small shield is strapped to the forearm of the user.

Kaylessa and Vernar are given the enchanted shortswords. Laurel receives the last magical dagger while Sorvani takes the magical ring. Wimzy gets most of what is left. Five magical potions and a small black rock with an undefined shape.

That accounts for all the magic items acquired except for the war hammer the gray dwarf carried. No one in the group has been fully trained in using it. It's up to the group to either save it for later or for someone to take it.

The Enemy Army:

Sergeant Crandell does his best to learn about those now under his command. Upon learning that Flare has a hawk companion, the Sergeant asks if it could deliver a message to Fort Graystone. Flare says that M'Lady could do that, although it would just drop the message into the fort from high above.

“That will do,” Sergeant Crandell says as he quickly writes a note explaining the situation his superiors. “Ask your friend to deliver this immediately and then return. She can keep an eye on the road leading to the Eagle's Nest. Give us advanced warning if hostiles are on their way.”

Kaylessa wrote:Talk commences about Hextor and the trials they saw versus other units. Apparently they won, having a choke hold on the Frontier Lands and are based within New Keln. “Who was this Emperor of Darkness and other factions?” she asks curiously not knowing the tale.
“His name was Keln,” Sergeant Crandell answers. “Good King Victor the Fifth and his finest warriors attacked Keln's fortress itself. No one is sure what happened after that. Everyone was gone.”

“Tae story is a wee bit more dramatic than that, boyo!” Sann chimes in. “Aye, it be a grand tale an' historic event!”

“Then perhaps you should tell it, Master Sann,” Sergeant Crandell suggests. “Since history is your calling.”

“As I be sayin' before, what used to live in tae Frontier Lands before Keln be a mystery,” Sann continues. “But we do know what happened when Keln did arrive. Outta nowhere did he came! His so called 'Fortress o' Dark Magic simply appeared! Shadowkeep he called, it a grand castle made o' some ebony stone.”

“A mage without peer, Keln was. He easily conqueror all around him and invited strange cults and faiths like Hextor into 'is lands. Keln ruled with an iron fist, but in time he wore out his welcome. Cynalon marched on him and eventually the king and his men reached Shadowkeep and fought their way inside! Right after that, Shadowkeep simply vanished! Gone as if it was a nightmare! Keln, nor the human King and his men were ever seen again! Poof!”

“With Keln outta picture, none of those who used to serve him were strong enough control all the others,” Sann concludes. “The followers o' Hextor control the most, but not all of what used to be Keln's lands.”

Lucyus wrote:Lucyus looks to the Sargent, a furl in his brow as he contemplates what he says of this news. “In time New Keln and all that dwell there will be sought out and defeated.”he says with certainty. “A six armed woman descendant of Hextor, should not be allowed to draw breath so her vileness can choke out beloved land. My clergy will not stand for it.”
“I am sure that someday that will come to pass,” Sergeant Crandell agrees.
Lucyus wrote:A thought comes to him as he looks from the Sargent to Sann. “Were there any defenses in the writings and legends of Bollo’s shield and spear?” he asks the dwarf curiously.
“Nae,” Sann easily answers. “I was barely able 'o find out that these places existed an' where they were to find any thin' else.”

Morning:

Morning arrives at various times for the adventures. The mages are learning new spells from the half-orc's spell book and from each others books. Priests are praying to replenish their spells. Assignments are handed out and the group divides up to handle them. Vernar leads a group down the stairs behind the secret door while Vardra takes another group down the ramp to round up the mounts.

Sergeant Crandell will lightly chat with those who remain behind as time permits. Flare keeps watch from the observation area over head. Many go up there through out the day to get out of the darkness of the quarters area. Fort Graystone can be seen off in the distance. The enemy army has not yet reached them and seem to have set up camp for the day and is not moving.

M'Lady does return near midday from her mission to deliver Sergeant Crandell's message. After resting and feeding, the hawk then goes off to fly over the side road leading to the Eagle's Nest/Bollo's Shield area. The day passes slowly for those up here who are not engaged in magical studies.

Down the Stairs:

Ren leads the group going down the stairs and uses a spear to clear away the cob webs the filled the passage over the years. About an hour into the exploration, a side passage is noted. The area has a more natural look to it. Cracks in the ceiling allow sunlight to filter in. Ren creeps up to the door at the far end and careful examines it.

“Seems simplistic in its design,” the gnome notes. “Slide bolts hold the door shut. Move them back and the door should push open.”

Ren attempts to move one of the bolts but cannot get it to move. Its rusted from the looks of it.

“It took us about this long to reach the trap when we first went up the ramp,” Ren notes. “This could be a back door to the area around the entry cave. We could try to force this door open. Perhaps a little oil on these rusty bolts could pursued them to move.“

Looking to Vernar, Ren Says, “You're the boss, so its your call. Try to get this door open or keep going down the stairs?”

Mount Round Up:

Elsewhere, a second group goes down the ramp, taking dead bodies with them to clear the passage way to the Eagle's Nest. The mounts were scattered for their protection during the attack last night. Time to gather them and their supplies up once more. The horses had extra food and water for both the mounts and their riders.

The fire used the night before burned the crude gate used to keep the mounts in the cave. Likewise the water troughs were rendered useless. However, there is a small stream not far from the cave that can be used to water the horses and refill the water skins.
Vardra wrote:Remembering Erisciana's staff, Vardra approaches Gerett and Laurel.
Erisciana's staff is not hard to find. It fell over during the activities last night and now lies on the floor. Miraculously it is still in one piece, but is singed in places and the silver and crystal head has spots of soot on it.
Laurel wrote:She trails behind them down the ramp and asks Malfamata, "Do you think that drow is still about? At least it's sunlight out." She squints her eyes against the light, outlining her comrades in black, and exits the mouth of the tunnel.
“Probably hiding somewhere dark,” the cat meows. “Her kind are nearly blind on a day like this. They only hunt at night.”

Talk turns about what to do now since the old coral has been destroyed. Building a coral is suggested as is simply taking the mounts up the Eagle's Nest.”
Lucyus wrote:The sight of the ruined stables at the bottom of the ramp is disconcerting.
Vardra wrote:As he considers the options, another idea occurs to Vardra. "If we can gather enough rope, we may be able to string it between the trees to create a makeshift corral. We just need an area large enough for the mounts to move about a bit and make sure they can reach to stream to drink. What do you all think? Any other ideas?"
“Horses only need to be sheltered during bad weather,” Kendell will drawl in his country accent. “I'd reckon a rope corral near the stream will set them up proper. 'Sides you city folk ain't ready to deal with horse and mule droppings in a closed in area.”

Rope from the horses and mules is gathered up to start to form the crude corral. More supplies are found as more of the mounts are moved into the rope corral. There is enough rations and horse feed to last several more days. The water skins are filled in the small stream and Gerett finds apples, mushrooms and other natural food growing in the area.
Vardra wrote:Vardra will toss the goblin he brought with him into the ravine off to the side of the road. He'd rather have it out of both sight and smell from the cave entrance. He will do the same with any others that are brought down. With help from Kendell, he will see if they can move the body of the ogre; if they can, it can join the goblins.
Between the two warriors, they are able to move the ogre. It easily weights some 400 pounds! The ogre has some belongings on it as well. Old, smelly clothing is found. A huge water skin holding some foul smelling liquid in it and mundane rations. He carried a large club as a weapon and had mismatched pieces that poorly fitted his body. The armor pieces are useless to the group.

GM Notes:

Things are starting to go back to normal on my end, so regular posting will resume.

Xanathom's fate was ultimately met in the Cynalon Knights posts as was the raid on the main Hextor Temple in New Keln some 2.5 years in the future. Xanathom herself was slain by Sir Acerion in epic combat in Cynalon Knights #4.

I recorded who got what magic items, but have not added them to your online sheets yet as I am not ready to identify them. You have those items, but cannot see what changes they have made yet.

Now what?

Gerett wrote:"Gerett, crossbow and pikeman, I suppose. Not quite as eclectic a skill set as yours. You folk have quite the useful lot of trades among ye, it seems."
“Mages tend to be somewhat helpless in a fight without their spells,” Sorvani notes to the dwarf. “So a little sword training to better defend myself should the need arise seemed prudent. I'm not great at it, but can made do in a pinch.”
Eris wrote:"If we were to engage the enemy in the pass and somehow defeat them or even break their will and rout them back to whence they came and we all died in the conflict, and no one knew that we were the ones involved, that would be a truly honorable act of War. It would be done not for ourselves but ultimately for what we held most dear. In truth it would be done out of Love. And that brings us around to the other tenet of Ishtar. After all, Love and War are not opposites." The priestess looks over to Sorvani when she says that and catching his attention, smiles. They had touched on this very subject when first introduced but had not the time to deepen the discussion while in the tunnels below.
Sorvani wanders around while Eris and Gerett launch into a great philosophical debate. Sorvani does not pay much attention to what is said as he is more focused on the things he needs to do. Unexpectedly the priestess suddenly looks in his direction, their eyes momentarily meet and she smiles.

“What was that all about?” Sorvani wonders to himself a bit startled, unsure how to take that glance and smile. “What's she up to?”

Sorvani turns in and catches up on his lost sleep. He awakes sometime the next morning, has his fill of rations and then turns his attention to learning new spells. Afterwards he joins his fellow mages at the table and digs into whatever spellbook is free.

“Anything good in here?” Alas, while Sorvani does add several new spells to his own book, he finds that he is not yet able to ad more powerful ones like Kaylessa and Eris do. “Soon perhaps.”
Kaylessa and Vernar are given the enchanted shortswords. Laurel receives the last magical dagger while Sorvani takes the magical ring. Wimzy gets most of what is left. Five magical potions and a small black rock with an undefined shape.
Sorvani examines the magical ring he was given, looking to see if there is any markings or writing on it. Not finding anything and with a shrug, he slides it on his finger.

He'll chat with the new sergeant and will say that he was just getting ready to go out for adventure when the opportunity with the army came up. Not much more to it than that. Sorvani will spend some time up in the observation area to get some fresh air and sunshine. Being underground is getting very old to him.

Kendell:
Grim Soldier wrote:"Indeed it is, Kendell", Vardra says, giving the large warrior a slap on the back. "We've won!"
Still somewhat confused at what just happened, but we seem to have won. “Yeah us?” Kendell will mutter and decides not to think about it any further.
Butternut wrote:"Good to see you, too, big guy," Butternut replies with a snort of amusement. "Not lost, just trying to keep Vernar out of trouble."
“I reckon that someone needs to do that,” Kendell drawls in response.
Weasel Dwarf wrote:It's an odd question, but not entirely out of place. Gerett gives a start and looks down at his heel, where Mitch is standing dutifully and staring up at him, as if it were perfectly natural for the badger to be there. "Hells, I forgot he was here. Badger, I think. But he seems to think he's a wolfhound. Mitch, go dig yourself something to eat." The badger tosses its head and slowly plods forward, nonplussed. "Not from the table!" Gerett calls after. "Fool thing acts like I'm some sort of houndsman," he says to Kendell. "He''s got spirit, though. I'm Gerett. Your name?"
“Ain't that the same thing?” Kendell says in regards to weasels and badgers. Maybe a badger is a better kind of weasel or something like that. A weasel noble, maybe even a prince! “Wouldn't that make you a badgerman or a weaselman?”

“The name's Kendell,” the large warrior drawls in his country accent. “Kendell Shearman of Plowman's Stand, small farmin' community to the west of the Elfholds.”

Later everyone retires to the dwarven base. The spellslingers are sent to bed while the rest us take turns being on guard. Kendell walks the area in an effort to stay awake.
Lady Elf wrote:Seeing Kendell walk a path to stay awake, Kaylessa will ask, “Will talking keep you awake?”
“I reckon that would depend on the subject, ma'am,” Kendell answers. “If'n you were to go on about that magical stuff your reading about it would plum put me asleep! Now if'n you'd like to get to know me better, I might keep awake for that.”
Grim Soldier wrote:Leaving his pack near his bed, Vardra starts to assemble his team. He approaches Lucyus, Kendell, Laurel, and Wimzy, and attempts to recruit each of them for the mission. As far as he knows, priests don't usually need a lot of time to study or memorize spells, so hopefully they are available. He also doesn't think any of them can see in the dark, though it is hard to say with a cat priestess, and Butternut seems to defy his understanding that halflings don't have that ability.
Next morning Kendell is up and consumes rations and water for his morning meal. “I sure'n could use some real food by now,” Kendell notes. “I mean this stuff will do if there is nothing else to have, but I need a proper meal!”

The Grim Soldier approaches about going on a mission to round up the horses and mules scattered the night before.

“Sounds right up my alley,” Kendell says with a grin. “I reckon you can take the boy off the farm, buy you can't take the farm out of the boy!”
Lucyus receives the magical plate mail armor to replace his chain mail. Kendell gets the magical longsword and Vardra the magical medium shield. Flare gets the 10 magical arrows and Ren two of the three magical daggers.
Kendell accepts the magic blade. He removes it from its sheath and will give it the once over. It doesn't really look any different from his sword, but that leather priestess says its magical. Magical in what way Kendell wonders? With a shrug he attaches the weapon to his belt and stores his other longsword for now.

Bodies are dragged down the ramp and Kendell will grab the high priest and bring him along. He gets disposed off once we reach the outside.

“Smell that fresh air,” Kendell notes as he walks out into the daylight. “Much nicer than that underground weasel den!”
Grim Soldier wrote:Vardra will toss the goblin he brought with him into the ravine off to the side of the road. He'd rather have it out of both sight and smell from the cave entrance. He will do the same with any others that are brought down. With help from Kendell, he will see if they can move the body of the ogre; if they can, it can join the goblins.
“Yeah, the horses won't like the smell of rotting bodies,” Kendell says. “It attracts to much vermin who may want to move on to the mules.”

“He's a big boy!” Kendell notes as they move the ogre body. “And I thought cousin Redgar smelled bad!” The body is soon moved off the round and sent down the ravine.

That task complete, Kendell works on rounding up the horses. He gently approaches them, pats them reassuringly and will feed them a carrot as he walks them back towards the stable.
Holy Warrior wrote:The sight of the ruined stables at the bottom of the ramp is disconcerting. "This is an unexpected problem," he says. "Any suggestions?" Once the corral is built, Kendell will take some of the feed and spread it around for all the horses and mules to eat. There is fresh water to be had, so they are good for now.

Kendell stands there for a time, the sun on his face. “I reckon I think I'd rather spend the night out here than back in that weasel den. Guess we'll see that new sergeant fellow says.”

Shortsword-
Kaylessa and Vernar are given the enchanted shortswords. Laurel receives the last magical dagger while Sorvani takes the magical ring. Wimzy gets most of what is left. Five magical potions and a small black rock with an undefined shape.
Kaylessa will look at the hilt and the scabbard to see if she is aware of the origins of it(dwarf or elf or otherwise.) She will then unsheathe the shortsword and look upon the blade for any designs, markings or writing.

Magical Items:
Lucyus receives the magical plate mail armor to replace his chain mail. Kendell gets the magical longsword and Vardra the magical medium shield. Flare gets the 10 magical arrows and Ren two of the three magical daggers.
The call goes out that the votes have decided the fate of the items gathered by the group. Quietly Lucyus listens to the Sergeant. He looks up when his name is called and is told that the Hexorite’s plate mail armor is now his. A look of concern and slight repulsiveness comes across his features. “Sadly, I know where it’s been.”claiming te armor.
He sees dried blood upon the chest piece and notches here and there. Taking some water he washes off the blood and takes a deep breath, He begins to wash it, his face much like that of a parent cleaning a childs backside for the first time.” He lets it out causing his breath to lift the long bangs from his face for a moment.
“It is possible that this was touched by Hector.” Lucyus says evenly looking down at the suit of armor. He looks up to Eriscaina for a moment then asks. “You know of Hextor as much as I do, Priestess, perhaps more. Would you be able to tell of this armor’s make or magic held within?” he asks curiously. He will look for markings on the armor, “Perhaps it is cursed, only to be worn by a servant of Hextor? In which case, it would need to be destroyed.”
With Sann-
“Nae,” Sann easily answers. “I was barely able 'o find out that these places existed an' where they were to find any thin' else.”
“What is it to say that these places were not meant to again see the light of day.” He asks the dwarf rhetorically.
Kendell wrote-“Horses only need to be sheltered during bad weather,” Kendell will drawl in his country accent. “I'd reckon a rope corral near the stream will set them up proper. 'Sides you city folk ain't ready to deal with horse and mule droppings in a closed in area.”
“The roses love it from what I hear.”he says back to the big farmer. “Nor that of what it brings with it, left unattended.”
Once the decision is made, the corral goes up quickly and the horses are brought together, fed and watered. Satisfied with their work, Lucyus begins to fill the waterskins and slings the full ones over his shoulder.( left Plate in fort area.)

“Smell that fresh air,” Kendell notes as he walks out into the daylight. “Much nicer than that underground weasel den!”
“A welcome reprieve, Indeed!” he says simply. “Enjoy it while we can! I am sure we will be on the move soon enough.”
Our task done and the horses sought too Kendell soon says.
Kendell stands there for a time, the sun on his face. “I reckon I think I'd rather spend the night out here than back in that weasel den. Guess we'll see that new sergeant fellow says.”
"I have a feeling we will be entering the dark once again, to cripple the supply line here."

Lucyus will make sure his horse is fed then brush it. Enjoying the sun as he does so. Once done, Lucyus will head back up to stone ramp and begin seeing what the platemail may need to be worn.

Vernar -
Kaylessa and Vernar are given the enchanted shortswords. Laurel receives the last magical dagger while Sorvani takes the magical ring. Wimzy gets most of what is left. Five magical potions and a small black rock with an undefined shape.
Vernar will take a few minutes to look over the blade. Since he is not entirely sure if this is simply enchanted or there is something more, he will secure the sword over his shoulder alongside his pack. Until he has more time to test it, or get it identified, he is a bit wary to trust it. Still, it will be handy in case he should have a need.

“It took us about this long to reach the trap when we first went up the ramp,” Ren notes. “This could be a back door to the area around the entry cave. We could try to force this door open. Perhaps a little oil on these rusty bolts could pursued them to move.“

"Besides, the noise from the door may bring unwanted attention from below as well as there."
"I be agreein' with you," Vernar will say to Kaylessa. "We not be wantin' t' alert anythin' with the noise."

He will then turn to Ren, "Leave it be fer now. We can fight with it later if we must." Vernar will wait for Ren and Butternut to continue down the stairs before following.

Butternut:
Kendell wrote:“I reckon that someone needs to do that,” Kendell drawls in response.
"Ain't that the truth," Butternut says with a chuckle. She's finding that she likes the big lug. He may not be sophisticated, but he is solid and reliable, which is oftentimes better.
Gerett wrote:"Eh, that's different," Gerett said with a shrug. "Even Hexxor priests are people still. Goblins aren't." If there is inconsistency with his thought, Gerett doesn't recognize it. "Hating them's more like hating rain."
It seems their new dwarven friend's opinion of goblins isn't so far from her own. Chuckling at his comment about rain, Butternut replies, "I don't hate rain; that's just a normal part of nature. Goblins are more like a disease that needs to be cured."

While she didn't get to study as long as she might have under other circumstances, Butternut still managed to nearly triple her list of known spells. Perhaps she isn't such an incompetent hedge wizard after all...

When the gathered spoils of battle are distributed, the enchanted crossbow is awarded to the halfling tunnel-rat. She strokes the finely-made weapon lovingly as she examines it in detail. "You will be the bane of many a goblin," she murmurs happily. Her only disappointment is that she didn't manage to learn the spell that would allow her to Identify the bow's enchantment. Butternut adds her old crossbow to the pile of extraneous gear.

Butternut listens with interest to Sann's tale of the wizard Keln and his magical castle. History is definitely not her forte, but she finds the story intriguing. She had never heard of a magical castle that could appear and disappear in the twinkling of an eye!

Descending without torches, the stairs beyond the hidden door are pitch dark, secluded from the outside as they are. Ren, Kaylessa, and Vernar were all born with the ability to penetrate the darkness; Butternut has had to train herself to bring out that side of her heritage. She still cannot see as well as they, but her dark sight is improving noticeably.

Upon finding an iron door many levels down, Ren attempts to open the door. Failing, he reports that the bolts are rusted into place. It seems that opening the door will take time and effort. Unsure what to do, the gnome ask for guidance. Kaylessa recommends that they leave it for now as opening the door is likely to be a noisy process. Vernar agrees and instructs Ren to abandon the door for the time being; they can return to it later.

"Makes sense to me; we're bound to be coming back up this way later, and anything coming through that door will alert us to it's presence trying to get it open." Turning, Butternut gestures for Ren to lead the way, the falls in close behind. Time to explore the rest of this stair and see if it leads down to Bollo's Shield as she suspects.

Laurel happily receives the enchanted dagger. She does feel a little tentative about who its previous owner was and what it may have been used for but she feels confident that if she starts hearing whispers she'll be able to resist. If Butternut is getting rid of her crossbow and nobody else wants it Laurel would be willing to carry the thing. She currently does not have any ranged weapons and a crossbow would be easier for her to wield than a normal bow, even if she does not have proficiency. She will also try to bum a couple of bolts off of people.

Laurel smiles as she hears the exchange. She had heard Kendell introduce himself the previous evening to "weasel dwarf" but hadn't had the opportunity to speak with him yet. She is also grateful for the sunlight, outdoors and fresh air. However, she is immensely looking forward to going into the caverns beneath Eagles Nest and searching the ruins.

Laurel looks a little started, but recovers, "Yes, we'll look for it." She nods and quickly tracks down the lost staff. It wasn't nearly as hard to find as Vardra made it sound. She picks it up and wipes the dust off of it, then awkwardly looks around trying to decide what to do with it so it won't get left again. She finally decides to leave it leaning against the entrance to Eagles Nest so that it will be easily noticed. As she makes her way to Garrett she will catch Vardras' eye and point to the entrance so that at least he knows the staff is there. With that task finished she will find Garrett and ask, "So...food, what am I looking for and where do I start?"

Vardra Marcus, PFC:

Vardra steps forward when the sergeant calls his name and accepts the enchanted shield. "Thank you. I'll be sure to put this to good use." Stepping back out of the way, Vardra inspects the shield carefully. He's not thrilled about the symbol of Hextor painted on the shield, but it seems to be a solid shield otherwise. Picking up a rock, Vardra spends a little while trying to scratch off as much of the paint as he can. Afterwards, he offers his old shield for anyone else to use.

Kendell seems quite pleased when he accepts Vardra's invitation to join his team for rounding up the horses. "Glad to have you, Kendell. I'm sure your experience will come in handy."

First task upon reaching the outdoors is disposal of the bodies. The goblins are easy enough to fling into the gully, but the ogre is far heavier. Vardra collects the oversize water-skin before taking on this latest challenge. Grunting and sweating, Vardra and Kendell work together and wrestle the hulking creature over to the edge of the road and roll it down the embankment.
Kendell wrote:“He's a big boy!” Kendell notes as they move the ogre body. “And I thought cousin Redgar smelled bad!” The body is soon moved off the road and sent down the ravine.
"Thanks for your help, Kendell. Glad that's over with!"

After Vardra puts forth the idea of setting up some kind of rope corral in the woods for the horses, Lucyus recommends some improvements to the idea. "Good idea, Lucyus. Let's do it your way."
Laurel wrote:Laurel looks a little started, but recovers, "Yes, we'll look for it." She nods and quickly tracks down the lost staff. It wasn't nearly as hard to find as Vardra made it sound. As she makes her way to Garrett she will catch Vardras' attention and point to the entrance so that at least he knows it's there.
The cat priestess locates Erisciana's missing staff very quickly. Vardra spots her signal when she points out where she has placed it near the cave entrance. "Perfect. Good job, Laurel!"

Now that they have a plan, the work begins. They manage to collect enough rope to string together a simple corral, and then work to get all of the mounts within. It has access to the stream, and Kendell volunteers to make sure that they have enough to eat for a couple of days. "Thank you, Kendell. You probably know more about taking care of horses than the rest of us, so I'll leave that task in your capable hands."

Gerett proposes setting up some defenses, ending with an idea for some snares. "If you do set some up, please show the rest of us how to avoid them; I would hate to end up dangling from a tree by my foot."

Now that the mounts are accounted for and seeing Lucyus filling water-skins, Vardra goes to the stream and attempts to rinse out the ogre's water-skin. If he can get it clean enough to be fit for use, he will fill it with fresh water.
Lucyus wrote:"I have a feeling we will be entering the dark once again, to cripple the supply line here."
"I think you're right. That did seem to be the way Sergeant Crandell was leaning," Vardra says in response.

Lady Elf wrote:“Always the respectful one.”She says with a soft smile, “I would not bore you with things magical unless it could benefit you, my simple friend.”she says easily, “Where do you hail from? Why did you pick up a sword and cast away the pitchfork and plow?”she asks curiously.
“Plowman's Stand is my home,” Kendell explains. “Small farming town close to them there Elfholds. From what I've heard from the elves we trade with, some place called Shieldtree is the closest town. We Shearman's and our cousins the Plowman's are much like me. We're tall, strong and tend to have dark colored hair. Adventuring is a draw to us while we are young. We go out into the world, make our fortune and then go back home to retire and work the farm. In time I'll be doin' the same, running the family farm back home with my brothers and sisters. The army offer seemed like a good start, so here I am.”

Grim Soldier wrote:Kendell seems quite pleased when he accepts Vardra's invitation to join his team for rounding up the horses. "Glad to have you, Kendell. I'm sure your experience will come in handy."
“Horses and mules can be stubborn,” Kendell drawls, “but I can manage them. Bulls you gotta be careful with. A critter that big tends do what it wants. 'Sides, I reckon if I'm going to be working, I'd rather be out in the fresh air where you can see the sky.”
Holy Warrior wrote:“The roses love it from what I hear.”he says back to the big farmer. “Nor that of what it brings with it, left unattended.”
“Yep, its good for crops,” Kendell says. “Getting used to the smell takes time.”
Grim Soldier wrote:Now that they have a plan, the work begins.
“Will do,” Kendell answers with a nod.
Holy Warrior wrote:"I have a feeling we will be entering the dark once again, to cripple the supply line here."
Grim Soldier wrote:"I think you're right. That did seem to be the way Sergeant Crandell was leaning," Vardra says in response.
“Makes no difference to me,” Kendell will say. “Farming is fine work, but some times you need a good scrap to get the blood flowin'! 'Sides, I want to see if this magic sword is better at carving gobs than the one had been using!”

Small Update:

The group of Vernar, Butternut, Kaylessa and Ren decides to leave the rusted iron door alone for now and continue down the stairs. Once past the side passage, the stairs go back to the same uniformity they had before. As the group descends deeper into the mountain, they see signs of the earth shifting over the centuries. Some of the stairs are cracked and in places some of the ceiling fell making a mess on the stairs. All of these obstacles are easily overcome and the group continues their downward trek.

Finally, a new sight comes into view. The stairs end and lead into a small enclosed room. Its about ten feet wide and twenty feet long. The stone along the walls and ceiling is worked and it does seem similar to what was found in the dwarven lair. As the group moves into the room an outline of a door can be seen on the far way. It's a secret door, but it can be seen on this side. Muffled voices can be heard from somewhere beyond this room!

The group moves to the secret door as quietly as they can. Vernar notes a small view port near the secret door, but it is closed right now. Its at a height that is comfortable for a dwarf. The port is slid open and some light from a fire illuminates the hidden hallway at the bottom of the stairs.

Looking directly ahead, some fifteen feet way is a large chair and seated upon it is a bigger than normal goblin. This goblin is flanked by several armed goblins. Beyond the goblins, a slight ajar door can been seen.

All that you can see looking to the right is the wall behind the goblins. To the left the room opens up, but your point of view is limited and you cannot see everything. The source of the fire is quickly found. It's underneath a huge cauldron to your left. Steam is rising form the cauldron and something foul smelling seems to be cooking in it. A fair distance past the cauldron, another slightly ajar door can be seen.

The voices you have been hearing are goblins and most everyone here can understand their language. Only Vernar cannot. Standing before the goblins, roughly between the the makeshift throne and the cauldron is a dark elf! She is berating the goblins. The 'goblin king' is trying to explain that a giant stone dwarf nearly wiped out his tribe and that is why they are not ready for the supplies.

“Lord Baracus is not as forgiving as I am,” the drow arrogantly states in the language of the goblins. “The supply caravan will be here tomorrow. Be ready for it or you won't have to worry about this stone dwarf any more. In the meantime, I must rest for. See that I am not disturbed.”

With that, the drow turns and walks out of your limited line of sight. The goblin king curses before ordering the goblins around him to be ready to deliver supplies tomorrow. The goblin king seems very nervous.

Here's the map for this new area.

The arrow points back to the stairs going up. The shape to the left of the secret door is the goblin kings throne. Below is what can be seen of the cauldron.

You can see how the secret door can be opened from this side of the door. Its clear from the dust on the floor and the cobwebs that no one has been here in a very long time.

Kendell wrote:“Ain't that the same thing?” Kendell says in regards to weasels and badgers.

Gerett nods cordially. He suspected this fellow was smarter than he let on. Either the rambling and nicknames for people was a front to make people underestimate him, or perhaps just an affectation. Gerett had known dwarves who could barely lace up their boots but could recite entire annals from memory. If this man couldn't remember names, that part of his brain was probably being used for something else. "Farmers are good to have around, I've found. Sensible and diligent."
Laurel wrote:Laurel looks a little started, but recovers, "Yes, we'll look for it." She nods and quickly tracks down the lost staff. It wasn't nearly as hard to find as Vardra made it sound.
As Laurel wipes the smudges off the crystal-headed staff, Gerett comments offhandedly, "Careful rubbing that sort of thing. Might make a djinn come out, or something."

As she asks about the forage: "If ye find any mushrooms, keep 'em all but don't try any. We'll sort out good from bad later. Same with nuts, and berries--most o' those'll be fine ta eat. Dandelion leaves will do if we really have a hard time finding anything better, but don't worry too much about broadleafs if ye don't know what ta look for. No sense crawling down in tha dirt unless we really need to. I'm hoping we can find game or some orchard tree; that'll save us a lot of legwork."
Vardra wrote:"If you do set some up, please show the rest of us how to avoid them; I would hate to end up dangling from a tree by my foot."
"Ah, as long as ye weigh more'n a rabbit you should be fine. But I'll point 'em out anyway so no one breaks them by mistake. For defenses I'm thinking nothing more complicated that spikes, so that if we have ta fight out here, the enemy'll be funneled inta one spot."
Gerett gathers up as much food as is practical to carry, while setting up a few snares. If he has time while the others see to roping in the horses, he'll carve a few palisade spikes to set around the perimeter of the corral area.

"So how much time do you all think we have to fortify ourselves?" he'll ask generally of the others, mainly directed at Lucyus and Vardra. "We can really do as little or as much as we think we need, and we think we have time for." If the others decide to invest some time in really making the area defensible, he'll even look into setting up a couple of pits, trenches, or tiger traps.

Kaylessa

Taking up the rear, Kaylessa slowly sees how time has ravaged this corridor and with no one to see to it it has fallen into disrepair.
Squating down slightly Kaylessa looks through the port behind the others. With the multiple eyes and head her view is not the best but she soon realizes that the Goblin Chieftan and the Drow have been found!
She looks over at Vernar and sees a bit of non understanding what they are saying. She motions for Vernar to look at her. She mouths the words Lord Baracus, Caravan tomorrow and Golem nearly destroyed tribe.
Not wanting the goblins to know of their presence she begins motioning to the others, Kaylessa points to exit, makes a walking signal then points up.
Kaylessa will slowly and quietly retreat back to the exit, being mindful of her surroundings. Once she reaches the stairs she will take swifter strides to bring this new information to the others.

Butternut:

Following Ren's lead, Butternut glides quietly down the stairs. Back and forth, deeper and deeper they descend into the hill. From the condition of the passage, it is clear that this place is ancient, as demonstrated by the cracked stone and occasional rockfalls, nor has it been visited any time recently.

At the foot of the stairs lies a small, narrow, featureless room of apparent dwarven construction. On the far side of the room, a door can be seen that is designed to be hidden from the other side. Sounds from beyond the door resolve into muffled voices.

Stealing closer, Vernar is first to spot a viewing port set into the door. He slides it open quietly, allowing them to see and hear the occupants of the room on the other side. The far room is well lit, with a brazier partially in sight to one side.

Butternut recognizes the language as Goblin, as do Ren and Kaylessa. Seated in what appears to be some kind of shabby throne is a large goblin, clearly the chieftain of those here. He is talking with none other than the drow lady that had been last seen with the ogre near the cave entrance! At least now they know where she had gotten to.

As the chieftain and drow talk, it becomes apparent that Sergeant Crandell was right; food for the army is being stored here. More importantly, a big shipment is expected tomorrow!

Kaylessa gestures to Vernar that they should leave; Butternut nods her head in agreement and waves Ren to lead them back up the stairs. There is much to report to the sergeant.

Vernar -

Vernar smiles as he quickly understands what is transpiring with the secret door and the small viewing slot. My crafty kin, he thinks pleasantly. He quietly opens the port and moves as far to the side as he can to allow others to see as well. His face turns to a frown as he realizes he has no idea what the goblins and the relocated dark elf are discussing.

Vernar catches Kaylessa's motion and she expertly gives him the important parts of the overheard conversation. He nods his thanks, listening to the words and getting the rough translation. The goblin language is even more crude than that of the orcs, but there is too much difference to make sense of it without some dedicated study.

Kaylessa makes a motion to leave, and Vernar joins in the silent agreement of the rest of the team. He quietly closes the viewport so as not to betray this area to the goblins. He will linger just long enough to ensure that none of the goblins spotted the opening, and then quietly return to the stairs. He will join the others as we return to inform the sergeant.

Post Continued:

The magic items acquired from the invading force have been handed out. Many of the group examine their new equipment and try to erase any stains left by the previous owners.
Kaylessa wrote:Kaylessa will look at the hilt and the scabbard to see if she is aware of the origins of it (dwarf or elf or otherwise.) She will then unsheathe the shortsword and look upon the blade for any designs, markings or writing.
Vernar wrote:Vernar will take a few minutes to look over the blade. Since he is not entirely sure if this is simply enchanted or there is something more, he will secure the sword over his shoulder alongside his pack. Until he has more time to test it, or get it identified, he is a bit wary to trust it. Still, it will be handy in case he should have a need.
Nothing of the hilt nor the scabbard itself suggests that it is elfin in origin. Likewise neither seems to be dwarven. Most likely all the weapons were made by humans as none of them have any tell-tale elfin or dwarven markings.
Lucyus wrote:“It is possible that this was touched by Hector.” Lucyus says evenly looking down at the suit of armor. He looks up to Erisciana for a moment then asks.
Should Lucyus use his innate ability to Detect Evil, he would find that the armor, and all of the magic items present, do not detect as evil. Anything dedicated to Hextor would be unmistakably evil.

About three hours after they left, the scouts who went down the stairs return to the Eagle's Nest by way of the secret door. They quickly report what they found at the bottom of the stairs. Another secret door seems to lead into the dwarven area far below!

Even worse they witnessed a conversation between the goblin king and the drow from last night. The drow warned the goblins that a caravan would be arriving tomorrow and that they had best be ready for it. The goblin king moaned about how many of his tribe the Stone Dwarf had killed, but the drow didn't care. Nor would a Lord Baracus and that seemed to scare the goblin king. The drow went to rest while the goblins would get ready to deliver supplies.

“Well done!” Sergeant Crandell will say once the scouting report is delivered. “It's clear that this goblins are unaware of the secret entrance to their lair. That works to our advantage for now.”

Sergeant Crandell thinks for a few moments and then will say, “We're moving out! If a supply caravan is coming tomorrow, then we have the chance to scout the route to the goblin lair and find a good spot to ambush it. This is just a scouting mission, so only take what you need. The plan is to use the horses to reach the road to the goblin lair, find a good place to set up an ambush and work out our plans for attack. Then we will retire back here to the Eagle's Nest for the evening. The spellcasters will be able to retool their spells for the battle to come. We move in five!”

After those present grab what gear they need, the group moves down the ramp. Those who are strong enough are encouraged to grab a body for disposing.

Those who were sent down the ramp earlier are surprised to find Sergeant Crandell and everyone else emerge from the cave holding the ramp. Erisciana notes her staff leaning against the rock by the cave opening.

Spotting Vardra, Sergeant Crandell will call out, “Report private.”

Afterwards, Sergeant Crandell will tell everyone else what is going on. “We're going to ride the horses to this goblin lair and see if we can find a could spot to ambush this supply caravan. This is a scouting mission, as we'll be returning to Eagle's Nest to rest for the night. Get ready to mount up and move out! Flare and Butternut will lead the way.”

GM Notes:

Sergeant Crandell will insist that the horses are used for this mission and not the mules. Mules are slower than horses, so everyone has the same kind of mount then the group can go at the same speed. Doubling up on a single horse is fine for the smaller races if they wish to do that.
Vardra wrote:Now that the mounts are accounted for and seeing Lucyus filling water-skins, Vardra goes to the stream and attempts to rinse out the ogre's water-skin. If he can get it clean enough to be fit for use, he will fill it with fresh water.
As Vardra tries to get the ogre's water skin clean, he dips it into the stream. A reddish liquid comes from the skin and it reminds Vardra of blood! It smells horrible too!

Now what?

Erisciana -

The conversation with Gerett ends as she gives the dwarf an out and he takes it, considering her words, but responding with only a simple nod. She smiles briefly, satisfied that her counsel was at least openly received. As a priestess it was one of her more enjoyable activities: offering guidance and enlightenment where she was able.

"As I have been led to believe, several deities play pivotal parts in the leadership of Cynalon, particularly Heironeous," she says nodding toward their own paladin. "In the lands of the Shining Coast, we are not a true theocracy in the sense that the temples rule. The Kingdom still retains some secular power bases, but the King or Queen are always a priest of one of our temples. Or they quickly become dedicated to a Zakharan deity if they are not!" She pauses for a moment, considering what else to say. "There is much more to it than that, obviously, but as you say: when there is more time..."

---------------------
Sorvani turns in and catches up on his lost sleep.

“Much more than we have had at present, my friend,” Kaylessa says looking up with a smile.”I believe all of us can benefit from the half orc’s demise.”

"Yes indeed," Erisciana will respond. "That half-orc, vile creature though she may have been, had magickal writings beyond what we have yet learned. There are numerous spells in this tome," she says nudging the dusty and smelly book in Sorvani's direction.

Lucyus seems to be struggling with the idea of using armor that was worn by his enemy. “It is possible that this was touched by Hector.” Lucyus says evenly, looking down at the suit of armor. He looks up to Erisciana for a moment, then asks.

The priestess comes over to once more observe the magickal armor that had been worn by the Hextor priest. "When I studied it for magick I did not receive a particular feeling of what sphere it may be or of its power, but then I was only scanning quickly in order to acknowledge, rather than gleen any further knowledge. That in and of itself is unreliable with magickal detection. Sometimes one registers the intensity of magick or the magickal sphere which inhabits the item." She will take a closer look at the armor itself.

"While I certainly do not know the orisons, benedictions or rituals of those who follow Hextor, It does not appear to have been particularly dedicated to his service." The priestess will kneel down and examine parts of the armor, particularly the helm and breastplate. "There are no markings or sigils which would be etched or scrolled onto the armor, neither inside or out, which would indicates some special dedication. Those who follow Nergul, dip their armor in the blood of their enemies or draw sacred symbols upon it in chalk made from powdered bone. From what I understand of Hextor, his vile minions are not so barbaric, but I don't see any markings that would lead one to believe it has been consecrated." She stands once more. "To be honest, I would think that an item dedicated specifically to the arch-enemy of Heironeous would be noticeable physically to you. I think you have little to worry."

With the daytime having arrived and once her studies have been completed, the priestess will ascend the stairs to the observation point and find out what Flare has witnessed. She tries to look herself as well and see what sort of reaction the enemy army may have, especially if they are sending an additional force to deal with the Eagle's Nest now that the heroes foiled part of their plan.

Erisci listens closely to Saan's explanation of the battle between Victor the Fifth and Keln and their mysterious disappearance. "A compelling riddle and mystery, it seems." She considers the time frame and the rough details of the story. "Clearly they were transported and not just over a distance. If so, one would think that in fifty-some years that one of them at least would be heard from again. So unless they were disintegrated and destroyed, they were either transported to another plane of existence, or possibly through time?"

Finally the scouts who went down the steps behind the secret passage return. After three hours, they have some significant news. They tell of the drow that was seen down below and the Goblin King. And also of a shipment of supplies coming to this staging area that the goblins inhabited.

“Well done!” Sergeant Crandell will say once the scouting report is delivered. “It's clear that this goblins are unaware of the secret entrance to their lair. That works to our advantage for now.”

After a moment, the Sergeant declares that they are moving out. In an effort to set up an ambush, he is mobilizing the entire group. It seems excessive to the priestess and many of them are less than useful in a scouting capacity. However, she is interested to get the lay of the land herself and have a direct knowledge of what may be expected tomorrow. Having only a few minutes to prepare and not being currently armed or armored, she will quickly don what she can, just her leather breastplate and pteruges skirt, forgoing for now the arm, shoulder, leg and sandal pieces. She will attach her mace to her belt by its leather thong and if necessary strap on the new shield as they descend the ramp, so as not to cause any delay.

At the bottom of the ramp, she sees the damage that their escape from the goblins had caused. The entire corral area was burnt, but she is pleased to notice her ceremonial staff resting upright against a far wall. It is a little singed, but no worse for wear considering.

Apparently they will be riding to the goblin lair. Erisciana will locate her blue roan mare and speak softly to it for a few moments upon reacquaintance. As the horse tack, bridle, saddle and stirrups were already set for her from the previous rides, she simply checks them again quickly and once more pats the horse on its dark black head and rubs its nose affectionately. Once the greetings are done, Erisci will pull herself up into the saddle and nudges the mare with her heels, directing it forward at a slow trot. She then waits for the signal to move out.

Lucyus will smile for a moment and then stand up removing his chainmail armor. He carefully rolls the chainmail up and secures it with the clasp so it does not unroll. Once ready he gives it a few test moves, feeling the liberty of movement. ( Does he feel any different)

After studying her spells, Erisci went up to the observation area to check on the situation. Flare was there, keeping an eye on things, and they chatted a bit while watching the enemy encampment. Graystone Fort can be seen further in the distance. By now the sun is starting to reach a high point in the sky and the sun is shining nicely. The priestess will sit on the edge of the observation area, in an effort to bask in the pleasant spring day.

After the conversation with Flare runs its course for the time being, she will think back on what brought her here. This first excursion for the crown has been a mixed experience to be sure and mostly negative. Some of that was due to pure circumstance and some was the nature of the group, now made up of three different new groups of individuals. No wonder it was somewhat dysfunctional. Although even a single new group would have growing pains, Erisci wondered why some were making it harder than necessary.

The leadership of the group, or rather the lack of it, concerned her. It boggled her mind that some of the group actively avoided wanting a leader. And others seemed to contrive to make the situation more difficult than it needed to be. It seemed a mix of private agendas, reluctance to make a commitment, random caprice and sheer ambivalence. Too many ideas in the heat of battle, too many people worried their voice might not be heard. At least those who were ambivalent went along with the decisions, but those decisions were rarely concise. Damn committees and their ilk.

The priestess frowned and looked away. 'Maybe I should leave,' she thought to herself. She wondered if this eclectic and motley group could ever become a strong fighting force. 'I could just simply gather some supplies and the horse and ride off at the right time. I have my own agenda and my own plans that must somehow come to fruition.' The priestess slumped her shoulders and hugged herself for a bit.

'There are factions within this group that oppose me, for some unknown reason. Maybe because I have Zakharan ethnicity? Maybe because I am a woman?' The priestess considered for a moment. She was among foreigners. SHE was a foreigner. Perhaps this was a cultural discrimination. She didn't really have an obvious answer. But it bothered her that several times the group had said that a leader would present themselves. And when she did, she was effectively ignored, and with such poor excuses, she felt. She offered herself to try and make the group better and more cohesive.
To give a strong voice, which was ultimately needed to ensure not only the success of the group's missions, but also to ensure their continued survival. At the rate they were going, someone was going to get seriously injured or worse. But the committee mentality struck her down. Erisciana tried not to be offended but it was difficult. A tear of sadness trickled slowly down her left cheek. She quickly wiped it away and turned to see if Flare had seen but he was looking away at that moment. She quickly smiled when she caught his eye once more then she returned to her musings.

The priestess' plan had succeeded in their retreating to Eagle's Nest. In truth it went off without a hitch. The defenses at the top could have been handled differently. They really weren't handled at all and Erisci hoped that was because they were tired and worn out. The priestess knew she could lead, but the group didn't want her. Maybe a few did, but again she wondered if this group of individuals could ever be a coherent fighting force. Parts were starting to take shape however, she considered as she watched a flock of birds soar across the sky.

Vernar and Butternut and possibly Ren had the makings of a solid team it seemed. The priestess contemplated for a moment. And a few of them were content to be followers: Sorvani, Kendall and Wimzy for certain. Flare was as unusual a person as she had met and yet he was a spectacular talent. So much potential. She gave the man another long look and he just smiled back with that goofy grin of his. 'Oh, Ishtar, what do you want of me? Am I simply wasting my time here or is there some lesson to be gleaned in this unusual and unexpected situation? Queen of Heaven, you give me insight and discernment at vital times. Your grace has shown upon me and I am grateful for that and the blessings of Isharia as well. Where is your wisdom now?'

Erisciana tried to clear her mind and think of something else. She dangled her feet from the wall of the observation area, searching for another happier thought. Looking out over the mountains here reminded her of being back at the Great Temple and looking over the parapets. There the Shining Sea could be seen from many vantage points and this perspective reminded her of those thoughts. She was always happy and content at the sea. She tried to remember when she was happy. It seemed so long ago now. Looking down, she caught site of her silver anklets and the remnants of the happy thoughts drifted away like an ephemeral, fleeting dream. Pulling up her right leg closer to her and resting her heel on the stone wall she sat upon, the priestess ran her finger over the smooth surface of the highly polished cuff. Thoughts of revenge and restitution filled her mind now.

Extending her leg for a better view, she gazed at the anklet's pair that encircled her left ankle. Locked, it was. Perhaps more. But it was magick, her brothers said. To allow them to scry her and transport her home if her mission were successfully completed or if she were in danger. 'What a bucket of puffery and drivel', the priestess thought derisively. She had never detected any scrying attempts and she certainly had been in plenty of danger, from the humanoids to the bandits, from the encounters in the caverns below to the assault of Hextor's minions. Oh they detected magick of course. But she never in all her attempts was the priestess able to determine any Divination magicks. She did recognize Alteration energy present. But while the Teleport spell was part of that school, so was Wizard Lock. Erisciana was certain that was the spell which the vile ancient wizard that Balathu employed had cast upon those anklets. It was an affront from her evil brother. A mocking gesture made to prove the reach of his power. She unconsciously sneered as she thought about the sinister family scandal she had unearthed and for which she had been exiled. Not only by her brothers, but also someone powerful in the temple of Ishtar. There was no sadness in her now, just anger and righteous fury.

That brought her back to her current conundrum. How could she fulfill her given mission, one that was more propaganda and deceit than anything, as well as complete the tasks to enact her vengeance? She chewed her lip for a moment, anger and vexation giving way to thought once more. 'Clearly we need a leader, of our own making, if we are ever to be successful.' And success was clearly needed for both of her goals. Apparently the group would not have her. Excusing for now the idea of changing the group or striking out on her own, she considered the options, as there were only a few.

Vernar had been chosen as dual leader with the paladin. He did an adequate job with the difficult situations that presented themselves. But he was not forceful and decisive enough. And as a scout, he thought too much in terms of trying to be clandestine. Trying to keep the doors below intact which was obviously futile, instead of using the stone golem to force them open. 'I was right,' she reminded herself. 'And I was right about needing the golem to exit the caverns,' she thought with a satisfied smile. Vernar was good at leading the scouts. That was where he would best operate.

The situation was similar with Vardra. Erisci considered for a moment. He was a soldier. It was possible he was a very fine soldier. But he appeared to have no experience with magicks or powerful enemies and it showed. His tactics were repetitive. Form up at a choke point and hold in a defensive position. On the field of battle, against a known enemy and a well-scouted position, it was a fine strategy. It was safe, defensive. In skirmish fighting such as they had been involved in, that could prove fatal. Grouped in one small cluster gave the enemy a chance to wipe them out with magicks or for a powerful enemy such as ogres or the stone golem, to catch them in a confined area and slaughter many. He may be on target to lead a unit of soldiers, but he had much to learn about leading a group such as theirs. Maybe that's why he wished so very much to lead. In truth, that was why she had suggested him as second in command. Now she wondered.

She was not likely to be accepted as leader, despite her fellows that actively supported the idea. There was too much push back, at least so far. 'And damn it all to Nergul's garden!' she thought angrily. 'I am the best option this group has. I have knowledge and experience. I know spellcasting of both clerical and arcane types. I am not a front-line fighter and so can see the whole field in a rapidly changing battle. But I have enough martial prowess to lead from the front if necessary or direct the battle while offering offensive and defensive spells as needed.' She shook her head in dismay.

The last leader option was their paladin Lucyus. He was enthusiastic and seemed to generally have a good heart, if a bit naive. He was trained, but relatively inexperienced, it appeared. And he focused a bit too much on minutia rather than the overall end result. He had potential but needed experience. The priestess considered for a time. There was no easy answer.

Just then their current sergeant called for them to assemble. Crandell at least seemed expedient. A bit too soldiery for what they ultimately needed. Again another example that the group needed their own leader. Or maybe they needed to change the group. The circle returned. A problem for a later day. Or a later hour at least. Erisci swung her legs back over the observation wall and turned to her quiet companion. "We'd best see what the scouts found," she says simply and quickly scampers down the stairs to the main area of Eagle's Nest to meet up with the rest that have been assembled.

TLDR: Too bad, go read it... ;)

Vardra Marcus, PFC:
Kendell wrote:“Horses and mules can be stubborn,” Kendell drawls, “but I can manage them. Bulls you gotta be careful with. A critter that big tends do what it wants. 'Sides, I reckon if I'm going to be working, I'd rather be out in the fresh air where you can see the sky.”
The large warrior talks for a few moments about managing livestock. Vardra nods in acceptance, though he has little personal experience to share. However, he can certainly agree with Kendell's comment about fresh air. "I'm with you there. Outdoors is really my preferred habitat."

As he makes his plans for setting up traps, Gerett reassures Vardra that he has little to fear from the traps and snares. "Glad to hear it, Gerett. Please proceed."
Lucyus wrote:Lucyus is surprised that Vardra is attempting to use the Ogre’s wineskin. “Do you think that wise?”Seeing the red liquid pour out and the smell that accompany it. With Lucyus’s job complete he makes his way back with the waterskins.
When he goes to clean out the ogre's waterskin, Vardra finds that it is full of some kind of foul-smelling red liquid. Looking up at the paladin, Vardra shrugs. "Honestly, I didn't know what ogres drank, and hoped it was just some old water or something. I guess now I know. Definitely not worth the effort." Vardra puts the stopper back in the spout and tosses the oversized waterskin with its remaining contents into the ravine with the bodies.

Kendell expresses enthusiasm at the thought of getting into another battle. With a wry grin, Vardra looks up at the big warrior. "I suspect you'll be getting your wish soon enough, Kendell."

Gerett approaches Lucyus and Vardra about building more sophisticated defenses and whether they have the time to do so. Lucyus replies that they probably have no more than a few hours, and expresses reservations about being able to do anything significant in that time. "I agree," Vardra says. "We should check in with the sergeant before launching into any substantial construction.

Not long afterward, the rest of the combined squad emerges from the tunnel.
Crandell wrote:Spotting Vardra, Sergeant Crandell will call out, “Report private.”
Spinning on his heel, Vardra trots over to the sergeant. "Yes, sir! As you can see, we discovered that the stables had been burned. We found most of the mounts and they appeared to be healthy, so Lucyus and I gathered up as much rope as we could find and strung it between the trees over yonder to create a makeshift corral. Seems to be working so far, though I cannot say how long it will hold up - especially if the weather turns ugly."

Vardra thinks for a second, then continues. "The new priestess, Laurel, located Erisciana's missing staff. She and Gerett were able to gather up a variety of fresh food from the surroundings. Gerett also set up some traps and snares near the entrance here to help if we need to defend the Eagle's Nest again. We've been tossing the bodies into the ravine on the side of the road to get them - and their odor - out of the way. With Kendell's help, we were even able to move the ogre."
Crandell wrote:Afterwards, Sergeant Crandell will tell everyone else what is going on. “We're going to ride the horses to this goblin lair and see if we can find a could spot to ambush this supply caravan. This is a scouting mission, as we'll be returning to Eagle's Nest to rest for the night. Get ready to mount up and move out! Flare and Butternut will lead the way.”
"Yes, sir!" Vardra barks in response. While most of his gear is still topside, he will make do with what he has with him. Vardra will locate the horse -- Forelock, so named for the white forelock draping down from between her ears that stood out from her otherwise brown coat -- that he has originally ridden from Fort Graystone. After spending a few minutes reacquainting with Forelock, he will strap on the saddle and prepare to ride.

Laurel nods and looks around. She's a little bewildered by all the ....green and... sunshine. Mushrooms, nuts, berries, dandelion leaves. She had never realized you could eat those things. Do dandelions grow in the woods? Laurel had only ever seen them in the cracks of the road and in peoples gardens. She'll stay close to the stables and do circles, widening with each turn but never getting out of sight of familiar ground. When she sees the Sergeant and the rest of the group appear at the tunnel entrance she will go and see what's up.

Laurel notices Erisciana going off to find a particular horse. She wonders where the Sergeant has decided to send her.

Laurel blushes, not for the first time her questions are answered mere moments later. At least she hadn't said anything. She wonders how the horses will do in the underground caverns. She had read about how some caves were bigger than a theater but generally they were smaller and more difficult to navigate. Perhaps this ones dwarven substructure gave it enough ... refinement? Smooth enough floors for the horses to traverse safely.
Vardra wrote:"Yes, sir!" Vardra barks in response.
Immediately the soldier starts preparing for the foray into the darkness. Laurel looks around trying to spot Sann. Once she confirms whether he is or is not here she'll try to find Garrett to give him her foraged goods. Then she'll try to find her horse from the previous night. Her panpipes are tucked into a pocket on the front of her surcoat and she also brought her leather bag with her thieves tools, books, ink and pen. However most of her other supplies: rations, bedding, tinder&flint, lantern and oil were left in the tower because she thought they would be going back up to the tower before embarking on any other expeditions. She also had hoped they would be going into the dwarven stronghold via the secret passage. This was much less exciting. At least she has all her weapons and armor with her.

Lucyus and Vardra seem to think there won't be much time to fortify, which is perfectly acceptable and reasonable to Gerett. He says as much to them:

"Aye, I'll focus on getting a few traps up for now then. I don't want ta be idle but neither is there any sense starting a project we can't finish." He begins the task of placing simple snares for small game--the outpost's built in fortifications will have to suffice for now.

"Looks like your counsel was right," Gerett says to Lucyus and Vardra both as Crandall and the others from the outpost come down the ramp. "He looks fired up to send us off somewhere."

Crandall explains that there's an opportunity to seize if they leave right away. Gerett knows better than to openly disagree even if he did think it was a bad idea. In reality, the plan seemed rushed but haste might be necessary to capitalize on the info gathered by the other group.

Gerett looks to Lucyus and rolls his head slightly, a good-natured gesture without any teeth. "Guess we're off then. A'int that just the way, once ye get set up it's time ta pack up and move again."

While the others claim their horses, Gerett makes sure the gathered food is packed up and secured, and gathers his own kit so he is ready to mount as soon as he chooses a horse. He'll wait until everyone with a preference seems to have picked, though--he doesn't know these animals and doesn't suspect he'd know a difference between them even if he had ridden them more than a few days before. He'll hop on whatever is left and share mounts if needed--and let those who know how to ride take the lead.

Vernar -
Nothing of the hilt nor the scabbard itself suggests that it is elfin in origin. Likewise neither seems to be dwarven. Most likely all the weapons were made by humans as none of them have any tell-tale elfin or dwarven markings.
There is nothing remarkable about the new sword that Vernar can determine. Still, it is of enough quality to hold an enchantment, and he has seen humans work the forge diligently enough to know they have sufficient craftsmanship. Besides, anything too gaudy about the blade and Vernar would likely not want it. Function is the far better option.
Vernar drops his pack with most of the mundane gear. He keeps his pouches and tools of the trade with him, and makes sure the new sword is secure on his back over his shoulder. He will rework his leather belts and scabbards once he has enough time, but for now he has all of his weapons.

After dragging a goblin corpse down with him and disposing of it, he will move to find his horse. Thankfully, enough time has passed that he is no longer sore, although he is sure he will get to experience the unpleasant sensation again soon enough. He will mount up, hopefully with a bit more grace this time. Unless assigned elsewhere, he will ride near the back to keep an eye behind them.

Erisciana wrote:"Yes indeed," Erisciana will respond. "That half-orc, vile creature though she may have been, had magickal writings beyond what we have yet learned. There are numerous spells in this tome," she says nudging the dusty and smelly book in Sorvani's direction.
“Sounds good to me,” Sorvani notes. “I'll check it out.”

After pouring through the spell books and more than triple the number in his own spell book, Sorvani will say, “A lot of spells in there and more that I couldn't understand yet. That was a good find.”

Right around then the scouts going down the stairs return with a report. The drow was spotted as were the leaders of the goblin. Sergeant Crandell believes from the report that a caravan will be arriving to pick up supplies tomorrow. He wants to ambush the caravan and we are all going to check the area out. Sorvani is unsure why everyone has to go, but then decides that the sergeant wants everyone to see the battle site before hand to get a feel for it.

Sorvani pretty much has all he needs for this mission, so does not grab anything else. He follows the others down the ramp, dragging a goblin with him.

Once down below, Sorvani will dispose of the goblin he was dragging and then find a horse to ride.

“That ain't water,” Kendell draws. “That's blood. Don't ogres eat people? I don't think you really want to be putting your lips on that.”

That sergeant fellow comes down the ramp with everyone else. We're going to take a ride. So Kendell finds his horse and gets ready to move out.

Butternut:

Not surprisingly, the long climb back up the stairs is harder than descending was. It only seems to go faster as they have been this way before and know what to expect. As they pass, Butternut makes sure that nothing has emerged from the iron door since they passed on the way down.

Reaching the top and passing back through the secret door, they report in to the sergeant on their findings, including a translation of the discussion they overheard between the drow and the goblin chief.
Crandell wrote:“Well done!” Sergeant Crandell will say once the scouting report is delivered. “It's clear that this goblins are unaware of the secret entrance to their lair. That works to our advantage for now.”
"I think we may have another advantage as well, sergeant," Butternut adds. "Goblins normally sleep during the day. The drow was going off to sleep, and I believe the goblins will do likewise soon. This could give us a great opportunity to catch them unawares."

With their report given, the sergeant decides that they will go out and plan an ambush of the caravan that is scheduled to arrive on the morrow. Butternut shrugs and starts assessing what she needs to be ready. It occurs to her that she has spent several of her quarrels, so she will check the supply room with the intent to restock her quiver. It has also been a few hours since she broke her fast, so she will find a bit of something to eat and wait while the others get ready to go.

Figuring that the goblins are no larger then herself, Butternut will grab and drag one of the bodies along as they head down the ramp. At the bottom, the smell of the burned stables becomes obvious before she can see them. "Whew! They really did a number in here, didn't they?" she asks of no one in particular.

Hearing Vardra's report to Crandell, Butternut drags the dead goblin over to the edge of the road and pushes it down the embankment to join the others.

With that distasteful task out of the way, the halfling naturist goes looking for her black-and-white spotted pony, Zephyr. With her distinctive coloring, the mare is not hard to find within the rope enclosure. "Hey there, girl," Butternut says softly, stroking Zephyr's neck. "Time for us to work together again." She digs a treat out of her bag and feeds it to the mare. Soon, she is mounted and ready to ride. She walks the pony out to a point just ahead of the rest of the squad where she meets up with Flare, then waits for the signal from Sergeant Crandell to move out.

"You ready, Flare? They'll be looking to us to locate the best spot."
