Operation: Graystone #6

April 13th, CR 569

Chimera Squad has been found at long last! The four individuals that survived were in a cavern illuminated by lava from deeper in the earth through a crevice. Chimera Squad was discussing their options when Wyvern Squad arrived. The two groups talk for a bit and food is shared as Chimera Squad had not eaten in days.

“Is anyone hurt,” Wimzy asks upon seeing Chimera Squad. “I am a healer.”

The story of Chimera Squad is very similar to that of Wyvern Squad. They came to Crossroads to sign up with the army for Operation: Graystone. They wound up in a unit and were provided with some weapons and given gold to buy more if they wished. The next day they moved on to Fort Graystone and were given the assignment to go to the Eagle's Nest observation post.

They fell into the same trap as Wyvern Squad did. Goblins attacked them not long after getting a torch lit. Roleth, a half-elf, died from his wounds. He was the body Wyvern Squad found on the shore of the rancid pool. Many goblins were killed and they eventually retreated. A dwarf, Tagith, had gone into a berserker rage during the battle and ran off after the goblins, ignoring the orders of Sergeant Dewcan, the commander of Chimera Squad. Dewcan ordered everyone else to remain here, while he went to get the dwarf. Neither returned.

Having waited long enough, Chimera Squad made their way through the maze of caverns. They found a nice large cave to use as place to rest. Kendell and Vardra went back to retrieve the bodies of the slain goblins so that they could be used to make a fire for the night. This was the same cave that Wyvern Squad would later spend the night in.

Next morning, Chimera Squad was off looking for their companions and a way out. The place with the opening in the ceiling was found. Before trying to climb out, Chimera Squad looked around for their companions. They found Sergeant Dewcan's body being eaten by a ghoul. The foul undead was quickly dispatched before it even knew it was in danger. The dwarf was not found. The group carved arrows into the walls in case Tagith came across them.

Returning the cave with the opening in the ceiling, the attempt to go up was made. Kaylessa was a skilled climber and using pitons, she managed to scale the wall and reach the opening up above. The elf tied a rope to one of the rings and threw it down for the others to climb up on.

Once up on this new level, they found the cave where everyone is right now and decided to use it as their base of operations. The immediate area was explored and all these caves didn't really lead anywhere. The source of the water sound was found to be a clean underground stream. Going upstream proved to be impossible as the stream narrowed, climbed and the force of the water was too much to overcome.

Going downstream was much easier. A glowing fungus grew on the stream walls, allowing the humans to be able to see without using a torch or lantern. Eventually, a new set of caverns was reached. While exploring this new area, a set of worked steps were found going up. At the top of these steps was a twenty foot wide hallway and in the middle of it was a nine foot tall statue of a dwarf, except it had weapons for hands. The bodies of dead goblins were strewn about it. Some recent, others much older. The statue started to move when Chimera got to close and they retreated from the area.

Retreating back to the cave with the lava light, Sorvani theorized that maybe the dwarf statue will remain passive to a dwarf. Unfortunately, Tagith was still missing. Kaylessa went back down to the lower area in an attempt to find their missing teammate. Instead she found more ghouls and they chased the elf back to the rope where she was pulled up. They pulled the rope up to keep the ghouls from using it. Tagith's chance for survival seemed slim. (In fact it was his body Wyvern Squad found in the ghoul cave.)

Next day, Chimera Squad was weighting their options when Wyvern Squad found them!

Vernar -

[A little clarification for the previous post seems to be in order. I was assuming that as Vernar moved up to keep the scouts in view with infravision, that the rest of the group would have strung out like we had before so that Vernar was at the edge of the torchlight. This would allow for a signal that it was okay for the rest of the group to join him would have been seen by at least one person. Failing that, Vernar would have drifted back down the passageway enough until he could be seen. I wouldn't have figured anyone would have let the dwarf out of their sight given the way we had been progressing. I apologize for the lack of clarification for our poor priestess who feels we have magic items beyond our lowly station! ;) Back to our regularly scheduled posting...]

As soon as everyone in the other group has received some food, Vernar will find a spot to sit and listen to their tale. He will also take the time to make proper introductions since he neglected to before dividing out some of his rations. The talk about an oversized dwarven statue that springs to life is both fascinating and discouraging, since apparently they are looking to him to guide them past this sentry.

"I will certainly look upon it once we all be ready," Vernar states, "but I must say that I 'ave little knowledge o' such things. Still, we might discern a clue, or as you suggest, maybe merely a dwarf be enough."

Elf Lady wrote:Kaylessa shakes her head at the remarks of the large fighter. With a serene smirk, “Sometimes speed will save you, though more often then not your wit wins the day, Kendall.”
“That's not been my experience, lady elf,” Kendell drawls. “Strength and speed seems to settle most things from what I've seen.”

We've been rescued! Sort of. Seems that another army unit was dispatched to find us and ended up in the same trap as well. Kendell accepts some food from the halfling who first approached.

“Butternut, is it?” Kendell asks. “That's a mighty fine squash!”

Kendell takes in the new arrivals and tries to assign names to them as he's horrible at remembering people's names. There's a gnome and a halfling and a dwarf. That's easy so far! But then there are three more humans and another halfling, although this one is a healer of some kind. One of the humans is a priest carrying an axe and a shield. Must be a war priest of some kind. The other human has a bow, so perhaps an archer? The last human is a bit of a mystery. She's wearing studded leather and gorgeous. Pretty leather lady perhaps?
Gnome Healer wrote:“Is anyone hurt,” Wimzy asks upon seeing Chimera Squad. “I am a healer.”
“I'm good, ma'am,” Kendell responds as he eats and drinks. “It'll be nice to have a healer around. We sure could have used one before.”

Sorvani:
Kaylessa wrote:“Now is not the time to argue.” She says her eyes darting between the soldier and mage. “As I see it, Our orders are forfeit, at least until we reach the surface.” looking at Vardra trying hard not to think if….
“Exactly!” Sorvani agrees. “We escape this trap and then report in. Trying to go back to Eagle's Nest would most likely send us back here. You really want to go through that again?”
Butternut wrote:"Nah, we're just the quieter ones," Butternut replies with a smirk. "We make the noisy folk follow far behind so they don't ruin our opportunity for surprise with their racket. I'm sure the others will arrive eventually."
“Makes sense,” Sorvani agrees. “At least you have large enough numbers to do that. That bodes will for us all. We all now have a better chance to survive this.”

The gnome asks a series of questions.
Ren wrote:“More importantly, you mention having to follow the stream to reach this door, so there is no way through one of these other 7 tunnels? I assumed that the lower area was a dead end/loop when we arrived at the upper level, but I had assumed this upper level would have more structure to it.”
“No, we didn't really map the tunnels up here, but they mostly just lead back to the large intersection or dead ended,” Sorvani reports. “But at least they were free of threats like the goblins or the undead.”
Ren wrote:“Any dwarven markings or did the golem attempt to speak? Oh, sorry. Golems are most likely what one calls the construct you found guarding the door. Automated constructs of a rather quite fascinating design, though also rather shortsighted in terms of their tasks. I would agree with Sorvani that there should be a way to pacify the construct, though I am not so sure it is as simple as being a dwarf. Rather surly fellows, known for long grudges, and unnecessary hair. They can fight amongst themselves as well so I can't imagine just ANY dwarf being safe to go by. However, though they may have some ingenuity, I can see them cutting the depth of their programming short. Hmmm....quite an interesting quandry."
“No writing that I noted,” Sorvani admits. “However, I'm not much of a linguist. The golem, as you called it, did not try to speak. The way I see it, the golem has a limited set of commands to follow, so they have to be as broad as possible. Harm only non-dwarves, or something to that affect seems a simple command for it to follow. Admittedly, I am just guessing.”

The other members of Wyvern Squad arrive and more conversations follow. A follower of Heironeous is among along with a man that looks like a woodsman and an attractive woman wearing studded leather armor. A thief of some kind? Since she is human, she could not see in the dark like the gnome and the halfling could, so it made sense that she was not part of the scouts. Her looks are exotic and not the kind you normally see in Cynalon.
Lucyus wrote:Examining each of new arrivals Lucyus, notices that there are no holy symbols among them and he cannot help but to ask. “Is it safe to assume that there is none among you that followed the calling of their patrons. Perhaps faith is needed as well?”

“Forgive me, I did not introduce myself. I am Lucyus of Heironeous."
Ren wrote:"Oh pish posh! Faith only goes so far, if it really goes anywhere at all. Now is not the time to antagonize these people for not relying on hopes and prayers to destroy a construct. Is Heironeous the patron saint of rudeness? Please do continue Sorvani."
Eriscianna wrote:The priestess sputters out an uncontrolled surprised and quick laugh. "If not for faith, your stomach would be as empty as a pauper's purse, my dear gnome. If you've forgotten, it is only by trust in the goddess that our spoiled food was made wholesome and edible once more. I am certain that the ghoul that met our fair Wimzy would argue your contention as well. If it had a head left to do so. Faith may very well be the most powerful force in our entire universe."
“I don't know if it is the most powerful force in the universe,” Sorvani adds, “but there is no mistaking that it is a potent one.”
Lucyus wrote:Lucyus is about to retort to the gnome but Erisci does so eloquently. “Forgive Ren, he is impulsive.” Looking at the gnome albeit briefly, “I only wished to point out that you seem to lack clerical magic. There is a chance it may be needed as well. And if you are wrong about having a dwarf near, Sorvani, Than you surely will.”
“Yes, you are correct Lucyus of Heironeous,” Sorvani comments. “We have no priest among us. Could have really used one.”
Wimzy wrote:“Is anyone hurt,” Wimzy asks upon seeing Chimera Squad. “I am a healer.”
“I am well, priestess,” Sorvani says. “Your presence is most welcomed here.”

Having met the rest of Wyvern Squad, the conversation turns back to the lone dwarf.
Vernar wrote:"I will certainly look upon it once we all be ready," Vernar states, "but I must say that I 'ave little knowledge o' such things. Still, we might discern a clue, or as you suggest, maybe merely a dwarf be enough."
“I have little knowledge of the ways of dwarves myself,” Sorvani admits. “I looked for the simplest and most logical way to deal with that guardian. I could be completely wrong and it will simply attack regardless if we have a dwarf or not. Only one way to find out. We should move out soon. We've all spent enough time in these horrid caves.”

Listening to the conversation, Lucyus looks to Vernar “It would seem you are to be the key to our salvation, good dwarf.”he says looking to him then to the others.
“No writing that I noted,” Sorvani admits. “However, I'm not much of a linguist. The golem, as you called it, did not try to speak. Lucyus catches what Sorvani says and raises a quizzically eyebrow, “So there is a chance that this golem will still attack us regardless if Vernar is with us or not.”
“Yes, you are correct Lucyus of Heironeous,” Sorvani comments. “We have no priest among us. Could have really used one.”
Looking to Sorvani, “If we are to be working together, It would seem prudent to know more of each other. What skills does your group possess?” he asks curiously.

Vardra Marcus, PFC
Kaylessa wrote:“Now is not the time to argue.” She says her eyes darting between the soldier and mage. “As I see it, Our orders are forfeit, at least until we reach the surface.” looking at Varda trying hard not to think if….
Vardra turns to the elven woman, his jaw tight with restraint. She has tried to serve as a voice of reason, and Vardra respects that even if he has not always agreed with her opinions. "While I do not, cannot, agree that our orders are 'forfeit' as you put it, you are right that arguing serves little purpose here other than to delay our next action -- whatever it may be."
Butternut wrote:The shorter man with dark hair speaks up. Sorvani introduced him as... Vardra, was it? Butternut chuckles. "Well met, Vardra. 'Soldier'... that's a bit of a stretch, I'm thinkin'. We're adventurers who agreed to help with this particular operation. The only real soldier in our group, Sergeant Traken, died yesterday when we fell into the muck-encrusted pool."
The soldier seems slightly taken aback. "Yours too? Our commander, Sergeant Dewcan, died within a day of our arrival. That is dire news indeed."
Ren wrote:"Huh?" Caught off guard, Ren looks around briefly. "Oh me? Simply a shadow without light. But you may call me Ren."
Vardra looks confused momentarily, but catches the name there at the end. "Well met, Ren." Before he even has the words out of his mouth, the gnome turns and launches into a long, rambling response to Sorvani. Not sure how to respond, Vardra wanders away to meet the dwarf and whomever else might show up.

Moments later, a large warrior enters the cavern. Realizing that there is little danger, he proceeds to put away his axe. His bearing, weapons, and armor would seem to befit a warrior. On the other hand, his tabard loudly proclaims an allegiance to Heironeous.
Lucyus wrote:“Forgive me, I did not introduce myself. I am Lucyus of Heironeous."
"Well met, Lucyus." Vardra steps forward and extends a hand. "I am Vardra Marcus, Private First Class in the Cynalon army. It will be good to have a priest among us. Warriors are often in need of healing."

Not far behind the follower of Heironeous comes a woman of foreign countenance, a slightly smaller man, and another female halfling - this one being even skinnier that the first. Very strange.
Erisciana wrote:The priestess sputters out an uncontrolled surprised and quick laugh.
The woman's outburst marks her as a priest as well as her preference for blunt weapons. Clearly, this Ren has touched a nerve among some of his party. If he's understanding the woman's words correctly, this new halfling is beholden to the gods as well. Odd, then, that she seems to bear neither armor nor weapons. Still, they both bear holy symbols; he doesn't recognize the one born by the human woman, but the halfling's appears to be that of Azrella if he's not mistaken.
Wimzy wrote:“Is anyone hurt,” Wimzy asks upon seeing Chimera Squad. “I am a healer.”
That seems clear enough to dispel whatever doubt or confusion. "Well met. Wimzy, was it?"

Vardra turns back to address the offended woman. "Well met. I am Vardra Marcus, Private First Class in the Cynalon army. I'm sorry, priestess, but I didn't catch your name..." He will greet the quiet man with the bow and leather armor as well, if he appears open to it.
Lucyus wrote:Looking at the gnome albeit briefly, “I only wished to point out that you seem to lack clerical magic. There is a chance it may be needed as well. And if you are wrong about having a dwarf near, Sorvani, Than you surely will.”
"We are indeed lacking in clerical magic, Lucyus, and I for one am glad of the arrival of so many of the devout. Who knows how sorely pressed we may be before we escape this hellish place." Sorvani expresses a similar opinion, so at least they are in agreement on this.
Vernar wrote:"I will certainly look upon it once we all be ready," Vernar states, "but I must say that I 'ave little knowledge o' such things. Still, we might discern a clue, or as you suggest, maybe merely a dwarf be enough."
"Any help you can provide is more than we have now, friend dwarf."
Sorvani wrote:“I have little knowledge of the ways of dwarves myself,” Sorvani admits. “I looked for the simplest and most logical way to deal with that guardian. I could be completely wrong and it will simply attack regardless if we have a dwarf or not. Only one way to find out. We should move out soon. We've all spent enough time in these horrid caves.”
Vardra nods. "I, too, wish to be on our way as soon as all are ready. The food has returned some of my energy and strength, and I would rather not waste it."

Butternut:
Kaylessa wrote:“And you have. What is left of us.” she says stoically as the metallic hiss of her weapons can be heard being put back in their sheaths. “Last survivor? Did they fall to the ghouls below?” she asks curiously as she takes an offered ration.
Butternut grimaces at the memory, despite the intervening years. "No, I was speaking of my halfling clan: Foxburr. They were massacred years ago by goblins. I alone remain."
Kendell wrote:“Butternut, is it?” Kendell asks. “That's a mighty fine squash!”
Butternut pauses to look at the large warrior a moment, searching his eyes in an attempt to determine if he is mocking her. Seeing no sign of cruelty, she responds in a neutral tone. "Yes, it is. Serves well enough as my name."
Sorvani wrote:“Makes sense,” Sorvani agrees. “At least you have large enough numbers to do that. That bodes well for us all. We all now have a better chance to survive this.”
"I agree," Butternut replies with a nod. "Having a good mix of skills helps, as well, and I think we have that now."

Chimera's story has many similarities to that of Wyvern. Registration in Crossroads. Travel to Fort Greystone and then to the foot of Eagle's Nest. Falling into darkness and fetid water. Loss of their military commander. Battles in the dark tunnels below.
Vardra wrote:The soldier seems slightly taken aback. "Yours too? Our commander, Sergeant Dewcan, died within a day of our arrival. That is dire news indeed."
Oddly, this soldier seems to value the lives of the commanders above that of the others lost. "We mourn all those who have been lost."
“I don't know if it is the most powerful force in the universe,” Sorvani adds, “but there is no mistaking that it is a potent one.”
"The gods do play a powerful role in the universe, though whether there are yet more potent forces, I do not know," Butternut says. "While not a priest, I serve Arvoreen as a protector of the wilderness."

There is much discussion of the stone dwarf figure that came to life, but Butternut has little to say on the topic as it is vastly beyond her experience and knowledge. After a while, talk turns to next steps.
Vardra wrote:Vardra nods. "I, too, wish to be on our way as soon as all are ready. The food has returned some of my energy and strength, and I would rather not waste it."
Butternut returns the last of the food that was not eaten to her backpack. Rising, she slings it across her back, then readies her crossbow. "I am ready."

“There is always that chance,” Sorvani states. “After all, if I were able to see the outcome of future events then I would not be here. Make no mistake, this is a risk that could result in our death. As I was telling my comrade earlier, I don't see any other viable option. We will die if we do not get out of here, one way or another. I'd rather perish on my terms instead of the whims of Istus.”
Butternut wrote:"The gods do play a powerful role in the universe, though whether there are yet more potent forces, I do not know," Butternut says. "While not a priest, I serve Arvoreen as a protector of the wilderness."
“As a mage,” Sorvani continues, “I spent nearly a year learning and practicing to even be able to cast the most rudimentary spells. I am told that priests of a similar power level gain their spells simply through the faith that they put in their patron. Imagine that... gaining spells by simply believing in something that strong. I call that a potent force.”
Sorvani wrote: "I agree," Butternut replies with a nod. "Having a good mix of skills helps, as well, and I think we have that now."
“Indeed, good halfling,” Sorvani responds. “I think the odds of all of us surviving that dramatically increased.”

“Vardra and Kendell are front line fighters,” Sorvani answers. “I'd keep a safe distance away from them in battle. “No, we didn't really map the tunnels up here, but they mostly just lead back to the large intersection or dead ended,” Sorvani reports. “But at least they were free of threats like the goblins or the undead.”
“Ren, is it? You are welcome to look about if you wish, but there is not much to look for as Sorvani stated. It had been a godsend that the ghouls do not know how to use the pitons. And for the time, the goblins have not found the pitons.” The thought of being sandwiched between an angry golema nd group of golblins is not one that she looks forward to facing and dismisses it. Atleast now their number is increased as well as the possibility of getting out of this accursed hole.
Vardra turns to the elven woman, his jaw tight with restraint. She has tried to serve as a voice of reason, and Vardra respects that even if he has not always agreed with her opinions. Kaylessa looks to the soldier as he shows some restraint. She does not reply only giving a curt not his direction, and mutters in Elfish, “Whatever makes you rest well this
night.”
Butternut grimaces at the memory, despite the intervening years. "No, I was speaking of my halfling clan: Foxburr. They were massacred years ago by goblins. I alone remain."
Äfter a long pause, “I am sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine what you went through.” She says evenly though with a hint of remorse of not seeing it before. “I recently left my clan to join another. It is rare occurrence, one many of my kin frown upon.”

“If you humans lived as long as we do, I am sure you would do the same.”she says looking to Sorvani, no harm intented as she spoke matter of factly. “My mother was a mage of some talent and my father was always good with a blade.”she says absently pulling out a blade, spinning it within her nimble hands and returning to its sheath.
“I agree,” Sorvani adds to the growing sentiment. “Now is our best chance. It would be foolish to waste it. Shall we?”
Kaylessa stands and looks to the others, “I am ready.” drawing one shortsword, “Seeing as I know the way, I’d gladly take lead, unless you have any other suggestions?”She asks her new companions.

Post Continued:

Wyvern Squad has found Chimera Squad. Introductions are made and the survivors of the two units swap tales and share food.
Vardra wrote:That seems clear enough to dispel whatever doubt or confusion. "Well met. Wimzy, was it?"
“Yes, that is what I answer to,” Wimzy mischievously answers, her dark red hair swirling as she turns. “I am Wimzy and I am here to help. I am a servant of the Blue Lady and will happily punch any undead into submission!”

The growing consensus is that the attempt to escape these caves and get past the stone dwarf must be now, while everyone is at full strength. Chimera Squad packs up their belongings and prepares to depart the cave that has been their home for the last few days.

Kaylessa leads the way as the combined squads retrace their steps back to where the opening leads to the lower caverns. From there, everyone goes down the passage where the running water can be heard. The tunnel winds its way forward for around 100' before emerging out into a much larger cavern. A small sandy beach lies between the group and an underground stream. A chute of rapids lies over 90' away to your right. This fast moving, churning water spills into a more placid stream moving away from you to your left.

The water appears clean and you can refill your drinking supplies here. The stream is one to two feet deep as it gently flows onward. Greenish, phosphorescent lichen grow along the waterways walls that allows relatively normal sight for all. Thanks to the luminescence you can see up to 100' away. The bed of the stream is a mixture of sand and fine gravel. The group begins to travel down the stream.

Here is the map for this area:

As the squads move along the underground stream, several dry shelves are noted along the way. No one or thing is there, but they could be used as places to rest out of the water. After about ten minutes of travel, everyone can see a flat shore coming up on your left. The underground stream flows past this area, but this is where Chimera Squad leads Wyvern Squad to.

A passage continues from this landing area moving gently away to your left. The area is mostly dark as the lichens are back along the stream. However there is a soft glow further up ahead that is similar to the one back in the Chimera Squad cave. There is another source of lava further up ahead. But this one must be greater as the area up ahead is much brighter.

This tunnel widens as you move along and get closer the bright lava. As you get nearer you can see that a crevice bisects the tunnel. The fissure is about twenty feet wide and much of the passage is gone over this split. Three narrow walkways remain.

Looking down, you can see the source of the lava itself is some 300' below. The crack runs to your left and right. The left portion narrows and eventually closes while the right goes on and turns away and out of sight. None of you have any doubt that a fall into this crevice would be fatal!

Kaylessa crosses over the middle of the three bridges without any hesitation. In spite of how they look, all three of the spans are solid and everyone crosses over. Once past the lava filled crevice, the tunnel narrows and darkens once more. It winds to the right and then to the left, left once more and finally to the right and you find yourselves base of worked steps. It is clear these steps are not natural and were worked. The stairs are nearly sixty feet long and go up at least thirty feet.

As the group starts to go up the stairs Chimera Squad suggests caution. The stone dwarf is not far past steps. Based on their previous experience, the guardian will not move until someone enters the hallway itself. Standing on the steps is safe.

Upon nearing the top of the steps, everyone can see the stone dwarf that they've heard so much about. The hallway ceiling is about 12' overhead. The guardian stands at least 9' tall and does indeed resemble an armored dwarf complete with flowing beard. The constructs right arm ends in a double sided hammer while the other arm has a double ended pick for a limb.

Scattered about the stone dwarven are at least two dozen bodies. Most of the bodies appear to be goblins. Some are fresh, slain perhaps in the last month or two. The rest are much older leaving only bones behind. An open door can be seen some twenty five feet past the guardian, but nothing can be seen through it right now.

GM Notes:

You've reached the stone dwarf! Here is the map for this new area. The hall with the guardian in it is worked stone, unlike the natural tunnels you've been passing through. The G is the location of the stone dwarf.

Vernar -

Everyone agrees to head out now rather than risk encountering something else in these caverns that could slow us down, or worse injure one or more of us. Kaylessa leads the way since she knows the area already. Vernar keeps near the front as he might be the only one who can lead them out of here once the stone dwarf is reached.

Once the group begins ascending the steps, Vernar knows it will be up to him. At least the cavern is much more open here and he breathes a sigh of relief. He certainly will be glad to be free of this extensive trap. Speaking of traps, once he reaches the top of the stairs, he will search the area. The 9 foot carved dwarf seems to be deadly enough, but no point in taking any chances. Vernar will also look for anything that might provide clues, be they dwarven runes or anything else etched or carved into the hall or the construct itself.

Depending on what he finds, he will make sure everyone is ready, and that there is ample space for him to return in a hurry should things not go smoothly. He will motion to Ren and Butternut and tell them, "If everything goes well and I can hold this thing at bay, or it doesn't stir, then I would like each of you to slowly enter, one at a time, to see what this stone dwarf thinks of us getting past."

Vernar will then take a few steps into the hall (assuming no other clues are revealed), his hands free of weapons and open, palms facing the stone dwarf. If it starts to stir, he will speak in dwarven a greeting and that he and his seek passage past the guardian. If it doesn't stir, then he doesn't say a word.

Butternut wrote:Butternut grimaces at the memory, despite the intervening years. "No, I was speaking of my halfling clan: Foxburr. They were massacred years ago by goblins. I alone remain."
Vardra looks over at the halfling woman. What she must have gone through, to lose everyone she ever cared about. He has known loss, but nothing like that. "I am sorry for you loss, Butternut," Vardra says, sympathy audible in his voice.
Butternut wrote:"I agree," Butternut replies with a nod. "Having a good mix of skills helps, as well, and I think we have that now."
'She seems a practical woman', Vardra thinks. 'This halfling would make a good soldier.'
Butternut wrote:Oddly, this soldier seems to value the lives of the commanders above that of the others lost. "We mourn all those who have been lost."
"Yes, of course." Vardra is not certain what her point was with this statement, so decides to ignore it.
Wimzy wrote:“Yes, that is what I answer to,” Wimzy mischievously answers, her dark red hair swirling as she turns. “I am Wimzy and I am here to help. I am a servant of the Blue Lady and will happily punch any undead into submission!”
"Punch? Undead?" Vardra's features exhibit a mixture of disbelief, bewilderment, and awe. "I have heard of Azrella's hatred of the undead, but fighting them with just your bare hands seems... extremely dangerous."
Butternut wrote:"The gods do play a powerful role in the universe, though whether there are yet more potent forces, I do not know," Butternut says. "While not a priest, I serve Arvoreen as a protector of the wilderness."
'A ranger, then. Good,' Vardra thinks to himself. "I am not familiar with this Arvoreen. Perhaps you could tell me about him, or her, as time allows?"
Sorvani wrote:“Vardra and Kendell are front line fighters,” Sorvani answers. “I'd keep a safe distance away from them in battle. I am a mage, but I can defend myself if needed.” Sorvani gives his sheathed longsword a tap as he said that. “Lastly, and not least, Kaylessa is your typical multi-talented elf: scouting, fighting and mage craft.”
Vardra nods to Lucyus when Sorvani mentions him, then goes back to eating.

Soon, they are on their way back toward the only exit they have seen. It is good to be moving again, rather than standing around arguing. When they come to the stream, Vardra refills his wineskin -- as do many of the others. He takes a moment to pause and prepare himself mentally for the trek through the icy cold water. He knows from experience that the footing is good, so there is little chance of slipping.

By the time they reach the landing where they need to exit, Vardra's feet and lower legs are numb from the cold. Once on shore, he takes off his boots and spends a few minutes rubbing this feet and legs to help the blood flow and regain some warmth and feeling. Fortunately, his boots are waterproof, so they are still dry inside when he puts them back on.

Moving up the trail, Vardra walks with his left hand brushing along the wall of the tunnel for navigation, as he cannot see in the darkness. This doesn't last long as they soon start to approach the area with lava-filled crevasse. As before, it gets lighter as they approach, despite the extreme depth of the crevasse. As before, there are three narrow bridges across, and they are soon on the other side.

This section of tunnel is significantly longer, and there is no way to know how long it will take to get past the golem. Since the need to see is great, Vardra pulls out his lantern and lights the wick, adjusting its length for maximum brightness. He stays toward the back of the group, where most of the humans and others without the ability to see in the dark tend to congregate. Still, it does not take long to reach the base of the stairs up to the hallway where the golem awaits. Hopefully the dwarf can pacify that death machine, or they are going to lose a lot of the group getting past it.

Small Update:
Vardra wrote:"Punch? Undead?" Vardra's features exhibit a mixture of disbelief, bewilderment, and awe. "I have heard of Azrella's hatred of the undead, but fighting them with just your bare hands seems... extremely dangerous."
“I don't like using weapons,” Wimzy answers with a shrug. “But I have had hand to hand combat training. As the human priestess earlier indicated, I punched the brain out of one of those icky ghouls. I'll leave the goblins and other critters to you warriors.”

The combined squads make their way to the hall where the stone dwarf stands guard. Vernar is near the top of the stairs looking around, but not yet in the hallway itself. The dwarf takes a look around.

Vernar counts at least 23 dead goblins in the hall. They seem to belong to two different groups as one group uses different colors from the other. The majority of the goblins are wearing leather armor. Maces and spears seem to be there weapons of choice. Some have daggers and shortswords sheathed and hanging from their belts. A few have crude wooden shields some of which were smashed.

Two of the goblins seem different from there others. These ones are both wearing chain mail armor instead of leather. Their colors are different, so they were most likely the leaders of these two factions of goblins.

Looking to the rear of the hall, Vernar can make out writing carved into the wall beside the door. It's dwarven runes that Vernar can read.

While studying the runes, Vernar spots something shining on one of the goblin bodies. Something is reflecting light from Erisciana's magically enhanced torch and Vardra's lantern. There is a ring on the goblin's hand and is the source of the reflection.

Now what?

Vernar check your forum mail for what the runes say.

Lady Elf wrote:“Seems we are at an impasse, my friend. To each their own as long as the desired effect is achieved.”
“Uhm, if you say so,” Kendell says to the lady elf as he is unsure what impasse means.

Soon enough we are on our way once more. Kendell secures his bedroll and is ready to travel once more. At the stream, he'll refill is own water skills wishing it was ale, but water is better than nothing.

Noting how deep the water is and that we now have several of the smaller races among us, Kendell will turn to them and say, “Anyone need a lift? The water's not too deep, to me anyway.”

Once out of the stream the trip goes fast and soon we are back at the stone dwarf. Kendell will have his sword and shield ready should battle suddenly erupt.

Kaylessa
Unable to make out what she murmured, Vardra gives her a stern yet puzzled look, then turns away. 'Elves. Who can make any sense of them?'
‘His mind isn’t as sharp ash is blade,’ she thinks to herself as the soldier gives her a stern yet puzzled look. Taking a bit of dried rations and munching on it.

Leading the others through the caverns, Kaylessa takes her time picking her way, her feet light against the stone. The sound of rushing water is soon heard and Kaylessa looks back to make sure the others are close at hand. “The underground stream is not far. The water is quite clean if you are parched,” she says evenly as she switches her shortsword to her right hand. As the beach comes into view she refills her water skin.
Looking at the others, Kaylessa sees they are ready to press on and so she sets forth.
Looking down, you can see the source of the lava itself is some 300' below. The crack runs to your left and right. The left portion narrows and eventually closes while the right goes on and turns away and out of sight. None of you have any doubt that a fall into this crevice would be fatal!
“Mind your step,” she says back to the scouts. As the room brightens from the lava flow far below. She then steps out without a second thought, those close enough to her can her her slightly hum to herself. Stone worked stairs soon come into view and Kaylessa stops and looks back, checking on the others and her eyes fall upon Vernar, “It is your turn to lead, good dwarf. The statue is not far,” she says stoically.

Kaylessa will draw her second shortsword watching and waiting Vernar as he goes forward.

"Well met, Lucyus." Vardra steps forward and extends a hand. "I am Vardra Marcus, Private First Class in the Cynalon army. It will be good to have a priest among us. Warriors are often in need of healing."
“And you Varda,” he says gripping Vardra in a warriors grip. “It will be good to have another military mind near. I am not merely a cleric; I fulfilled my training as a Paladin within the temple of Hieronous. I look forward to fighting at your side.”
“Vardra and Kendell are front line fighters,” Sorvani answers. “I'd keep a safe distance away from them in battle. I am a mage, but I can defend myself if needed.” Sorvani gives his sheathed longsword a tap as he said that. “Lastly, and not least, Kaylessa is your typical multi-talented elf: scouting, fighting and mage craft.”
“Then let us meet an end of our own making,” he says evenly to the fighter. As a smile begins to etch across his face. “I prefer to be where the fighting is thickest and where my axe can bite deep into my foes. The paladin cleric looks to each of their new companions with hope. As their number increase so does that of getting out of this hole.

Lucyus follows the others out of the cavern, taking his place at the rear as they begin moving through the caverns. The sound of rushing water is soon heard and he then lays eyes upon the underground stream, as the others soon begin filling their water skins. Lucyus follows suit. “Were you able to catch anything in the stream?” he asks, taking up and capping his wineskin.

Sloshing through the stream, Lucyus looks to the others making sure that everyone is accounted for. He hears Kendell ask if anyone would like to be carried. ‘A good heart.’ He notes of the large warrior.

Lichen lights the way and Lucyus can’t help but be curious of the plant. “Never have a seen such a plant. Are they poisonous?” he asks no one in particular.

They are off again and Lucyus can make light up ahead. Soon enough it is abundantly clear why. A lava stream is flowing beneath them as Lucyus’ eyes go wide. Never before has he seen such a sight. If one were to slip and fall it would be their last. Tentatively Lucyus steps forward across the bridge. Feeling the security of the earth beneath him , he quickly makes his way across as the others stop up ahead.

Readying his axe and shield, Lucyus soon realizes that they are near the chamber in which they spoke of. “Is there any other way into this chamber?” he asks seeing the decaying and dead goblins. As Vernar steps forward. Lucyus will be ready and guard their rear flank.

Erisciana -

“I don't know if it is the most powerful force in the universe,” Sorvani adds, “but there is no mistaking that it is a potent one.” The priestess nods acceptingly at the rat-faced mage.

When the Chimera members introduce themselves, Erisciana will as well. "Well met. I am Erisciana of the House Iltani. I am a priestess of the Temple of Ishtar."

The members of Chimera squad bicker a little, which is not overly surprising considering the toll they have taken. Of course, that might be part of the reason why they lost so many of their numbers. Difficult to speculate, given the circumstances, the priestess decides. Until we escape this terrible deathtrap, we must work together. Hopefully the newcomers can fit in with our own group.

After Chimera squad has some food and gathers their things, the combined group is off once more, thankfully. Eventually they emerge in a large cavern. Erisciana can smell the water and hear it before she sees it, accustomed as she is to the Shining Coast. She smiles slightly, a possible end to the caverns closer at hand.

The shore is sandy and the water rushes into the area from the right, pooling here and continuing off to the left at a much more meandering pace. Several of the group refill their waterskins. Unfortunately, Erisciana had left hers behind with her horse. She will remove her lower leg armor and fasten them to rings on her belt. Wading into the flowing stream, she will use cupped hands to drink her fill of the fresh water before continuing on. Underfoot a mix of sand and fine gravel makes walking slow but easy. The phosphorescent lichen makes the trip down the stream somewhat surreal and a welcome change from the constant stress of the unknown caverns.

It is not long before the group reaches another shore on the opposite bank of the stream. This appears to be the way to the infamous dwarf golem which Chimera told them about. "Have you tried to continue further down the stream?" the priestess asks of Chimera's members in general.

Erisciana is prepared to continue on barefoot to not slow down the group, but seeing the soldier Vardra adjust his boots, she will take the time to buckle up her armored sandals once more.

Crossing the bridge over the lava creates another interesting scene. Were it not so dangerous, there might be more time to absorb the natural beauty of the caverns. Erisciana stops on the other side for a moment to admire the view, while the rest of the group behind her cross.

Not too much further and the worked stone steps leading to the golem come into view. Vernar takes the lead from here and climbs the steps. She sees him step into the hall and waits for whatever situation will present itself to them next.

Vernar -

Vernar can only chuckle at the fate of so many goblins. They thought they could best dwarven craftsmanship, he thinks to himself. Then he spots dwarven runes carved into the wall.

"I see somethin'," he tells the others, taking a moment to read them and then provide a workable translation into the common tongue. "There 'r runes there by the door," he says turning back to the group to address them all.

"They essentially say, 'Welcome sons and daughters o' stone. All others will be treated harshly.' " After letting that sink in for a moment, Vernar continues, "I also spotted a ring shiny enough t' reflect light upon one o' the goblin's disgusting fingers."

"I see two options fer us at this point," the dwarf continues. "I can go ahead an' see what lies beyond the door alone, or I can try t' move with one or more o' us t' see if the guardian'll let me escort non-dwarves past. I think we should try the second idea with either Ren or Butternut if they're agreeable, but I should go first alone t' see if the stone dwarf reacts t' me."

Depending on what his companions decide, Vernar will move into the hallway to see what happens, moving cautiously and only a few steps at a time. If he can reach the guardian without incident, then we can go with the group consensus. He will also move to pluck the ring from the dead goblin if he determines it is safe to do so and does not detect any traps or other hazards.

“We did search that way,” Sorvani reports. “The stream continues on much like does here for a time, but then drops off over a ledge. Kaylessa could not see the bottom or anything below. It didn't seem like a way out, assuming that we could even reach the bottom.”

The next set of caverns is reached and we leave the underground steam. Kaylessa leads the way through the tunnels, over the crevice and up the stairs to that horrible guard.
Lucyus wrote:Readying his axe and shield, Lucyus soon realizes that they are near the chamber in which they spoke of. “Is there any other way into this chamber?” he asks seeing the decaying and dead goblins. As Vernar steps forward. Lucyus will be ready and guard their rear flank.

The dwarf spots writing in the back of the hall and translates it for the rest of us.

"That's nice," Butternut says in a non-committal tone. "Just don't be mistakin' me for food."
Sorvani wrote:“As a mage,” Sorvani continues, “I spent nearly a year learning and practicing to even be able to cast the most rudimentary spells. I am told that priests of a similar power level gain their spells simply through the faith that they put in their patron. Imagine that... gaining spells by simply believing in something that strong. I call that a potent force.”
"As do I, Sorvani. No disagreement here," Butternut says with a shrug. "Like you, I struggled with magic for a considerable time, and yet my ability in that area is still very much in its infancy. I can count the number of spells I know how to cast on the fingers of one hand. Will it get easier? I don't know, but I hope so."

Vardra wrote:“I don't like using weapons,” Wimzy answers with a shrug. “But I have had hand to hand combat training. As the human priestess earlier indicated, I punched the brain out of one of those icky ghouls. I'll leave the goblins and other critters to you warriors.”

Butternut logs this information, though she has no comment to make in reply. There is some entertaining interplay between Kaylessa and Sorvani, but Butternut chooses to stay out of it.
Kendell wrote:Noting how deep the water is and that we now have several of the smaller races among us, Kendell will turn to them and say, “Anyone need a lift? The water's not too deep, to me anyway.”
Though tempted, Butternut isn't willing to make herself beholden to him that way.

The trek through the tunnels to where the dwarven statue - or golem - stands guard is both interesting and varied. The subterranean stream is cold and comes up nearly to her waist, but Butternut has dealt with such things before. When they reach the lava-bottom crevasse, she pauses on the bridge across, letting the heat dry her clothing. While not aligned with fire, she concedes that it does have it's place and uses.

The group pools up on the stairs, from which they have a good view of the stone dwarf. Butternut feels a certain morbid pleasure at the sight of all those goblin bodies piled up around it.
Vernar wrote:He will motion to Ren and Butternut and tell them, "If everything goes well and I can hold this thing at bay, or it doesn't stir, then I would like each of you to slowly enter, one at a time, to see what this stone dwarf thinks of us getting past."

Post Continued:

The Stone Dwarf has been reached at last! Vernar reads runes carved into the wall beside the far door. The carvings invite dwarves in, but make no such promises to non-dwarves. Nearly two dozen dead goblins surround the guardian. Most of them are on the other side of the Stone Dwarf, between it and the far door.

Vernar takes a deep breath and steps into the hallway. The Stone Dwarf does not react at all. A second step follows, and then a third and forth. The statue does not move in the slightest.

Now is when Vernar gestures for either Ren or Butternut to join him. Butternut moves first. Tentatively she steps into the hall from the top step. When her foot touches the stone floor, the statues moves! It moves forward at a slow, but steady pace towards the halfling!

Vernar calls out for the statue to stop, but it pays him no attention. The statue moves towards the stairs as Butternut and everyone dashes down the stairs. Those goblin remains between the statue and its target are flattened underneath thunderous footfalls.

Once Butternut and everyone else is far enough away, the statue stops, turns and returns to its guard post. Upon arriving there, the Stone Dwarf turns and faces the stairs once more. It paid Vernar no heed.

With that experiment concluded, Vernar moves past the Stone Dwarf and towards the ring he noted earlier. Its on a finger of one of the two goblins in chain mail. The goblin leader was from the first group of goblins as only his bones remain. Vernar easily plucks the ring from the dead goblin. When Vernar does that, the ring flashes for a second and then goes dark once more.

Unnoticed by Vernar, as his back is to the Stone Dwarf, but at the same time the ring glowed so did the guardian's eyes. The statue's eyes flashed for a second and then went dark once more.

Smaller runes are noted under the larger ones that invited Sons and Daughters. Vernar studies the runes for a moment and understands them.

Lucyus wrote:“And you Vardra,” he says gripping Vardra in a warriors grip. “It will be good to have another military mind near. I am not merely a cleric; I fulfilled my training as a Paladin within the temple of Hieronous. I look forward to fighting at your side.”
Vardra meets Lucyus' grip. Despite not being particularly large or muscular, it is clear that his strength is substantial. "A paladin! That's very impressive, Lucyus. I had dreamed of being one myself, but was unable to meet the qualifications; they are very selective in whom they accept for that training. It will be an honor to serve with you."
Wimzy wrote:“I don't like using weapons,” Wimzy answers with a shrug. “But I have had hand to hand combat training. As the human priestess earlier indicated, I punched the brain out of one of those icky ghouls. I'll leave the goblins and other critters to you warriors.”
Butternut wrote:Butternut smirks. "Believe it. Let me tell you, it was a sight to see."
Vardra looks back and forth between the two halfling women for a moment, then shakes his head in wonderment. "Well, I'll be. Hope I get a chance to see that for myself someday."
Butternut wrote:"I would be happy to, Vardra. Not many humans show an interest in the halfling deities."
"Thank you, Butternut," Vardra replies with a nod. "I've always been interested in the gods, but couldn't qualify to be a paladin and didn't really have the wherewithal to become a priest. Still, I like to learn what I can of them."
Lucyus wrote:Lucyus follows the others out of the cavern, taking his place at the rear as they begin moving through the caverns. The sound of rushing water is soon heard and he then lays eyes upon the underground stream, as the others soon begin filling their water skins. Lucyus follows suit. “Were you able to catch anything in the stream?” he asks, taking up and capping his wineskin.
Sorvani wrote:As we reach the underground river, Sorvani will drink down his own waterskin and than refill it. “We tried, but not even a nibble,” Sorvani states. “Given the strength of those rapids, nothing might have survived the trip down here.”
"It's a shame, really; fish is good eating," Vardra says. "If we had more time, I wouldn't mind a bit more fishing, myself. I find it pleasant and relaxing."
Sorvani wrote:“We did search that way,” Sorvani reports. “The stream continues on much like does here for a time, but then drops off over a ledge. Kaylessa could not see the bottom or anything below. It didn't seem like a way out, assuming that we could even reach the bottom.”
"It may yet be our only option if we cannot get past that stone guardian," Vardra replies grimly. "No idea what we might find down there, though I suppose the water must go somewhere."

Once they reach the stairs and the group comes to a halt, Vardra moves to the back of the pack and watches behind them with his lantern. Wouldn't do to have trouble come a'calling from behind while their path forward is blocked.

"Learning is always a wise course of action, to my way of thinking," Butternut says. "I'm sorry you weren't able to become a paladin like you wanted, but perhaps you'll end up joining the priesthood later in life." It is always good to have dreams, and she is happy to encourage this man in keeping his alive on some level.

Vernar steps out onto the wider, level hallway. One step, two, three, yet no response from the stone giant. Butternut waits, tense, for the signal, which comes soon. Vernar beckons, and Butternut steps forward warily. No sooner has her foot touched the hallway floor than the golem turns and starts in her direction. She hesitates a moment, and Vernar shouts at the golem in what she assumes is his native language. Seeing no reaction, Butternut spins and leaps back, landing several steps below the hallway floor. Not pausing to look back, she dashes further down the stairs until she hears the statue come to a halt. Breathing heavily, Butternut pauses to recuperate; as such, she does not see Vernar collect the ring, nor the golem's momentary reaction.

Vernar -

Vernar has no issues moving into the hallway, but as soon as Butternut attempts to follow his lead, the stone dwarf animates and begins to chase her down. Thankfully, Butternut is far too quick, as well as prepared for this possibility, that she is clear from any danger long before the guardian can reach her original spot. Soon it settles down and awaits the next non-dwarf to make an attempt.

As Vernar considers what they need to do now, he figures he might as well retrieve the ring and search for more clues. Removing the ring causes it to flash. While peculiar, Vernar is aware that any number of magics may have been cast upon it. He does not put it on, but instead secures it in one of his pouches. Then he spots the smaller runes.

"Hmmm," he says to himself as he tries to put the information together. He thinks he has a good understanding of the dates, but the name means nothing to him. Doing some quick calculations in his head, he is pretty sure he knows just how long ago this dedication occurred! While he is here, Vernar will glance over the other goblin remains a little closer, as well as seeing if he can determine anything about the doorway and what he might be able to see beyond without going completely up to it at this time.

Vernar will then make his way back to the group to discuss options. He will reveal that he found another set of runes. "Somethin' called Bollo's Shield, which may be that," he says with a thumb pointing back to the stone dwarf, "or maybe all this, was dedicated 'bout 1100 years ago."

He will then pull out the ring he retrieved and see if it is remarkable in any way (dwarven runes, etc.) and if not, then see what the mages and priests in our group think of it. "It flashed when I pulled it free," he states, "but I did not wish t' risk puttin' it on myself."

Small Update:

Vernar takes a better look around after the Stone Dwarf returns to its guard post. The door behind the guardian is partially opened. As Vernar gets closer he can see that a few more dead goblins are in this room. Clearly they tried to escape this way, but the Stone Dwarf got them anyway.

Beyond the door is a worked 30' square room. Along the far wall are defensive positions where guards could fire ranged weapons while partially covered. In the back of this room is a pair of large double doors, but they are currently closed.

Retrieving the ring that was found on one of the goblin leaders, Vernar notes runes engraved on the band. It's in dwarven and simply says 'control'.

The tall warrior follows along with everyone else as we make the trek to the place where we found the Stone Dwarf. Kendell tends to keep to the rear as with his height he can see over just about everyone else and doesn't wish to block anyone else's sight.

The place is reached and it seems that the Stone Dwarf doesn't mind its own kin. It just everyone else that it hates! When the halfling starts to move towards it, the Stone Dwarf comes to life! Naturally we run for safety, but return once it the guard stops chasing us.

“That things not very fast,” Kendell notes. “Maybe we could out run it?”

“You're a mage?” Sorvani asks, mildly surprised. “Perhaps we can swap spells at a later date. Assuming that we survive all of this of course.”

When we reach the underground stream, talk if fishing comes up.

“Yes,” Sorvani utters surprise. Sorvani never imagined that he would have something in common with the grim soldier. “It is very relaxing.”

The Stone Dwarf is reached and it pays no heed to Vernar! But, it still seems hostile to everyone else. We run away once more, but then come back once the guardian stops it pursuit.

“That's a long time ago,” Sorvani notes. “If this place is this old, than that explains why everything here is old and rusted. But why would the dwarves build a place like this? They've always been friendly to Cynalon.”

“But of course, Cynalon didn't exist 1100 years ago,” Sorvani continues, answering his own question. “Perhaps these lands were far more dangerous back than and this was some sort of defensive outpost.”

“Is there any way out through that door?” Sorvani asks Vernar. “The rest of us might have to simply run for it.”

Erizhetiana -

During the meeting and introductions with Chimera squad, the fighting mage named Sorvani inquires about the priestess' origins.

“Well met, priestess,” Sorvani easily responds. “Forgive me for being forward, but you do not have the typical appearance of one from Cynalon. From where do you hail? I am unfamiliar with your patron.”

Erisci regards the man again for a moment silently, cocking her head slightly to the side. "Your perception is not without accuracy," she responds. "I am not from Cynalon. I hail from the Golden Coast. My home is Zakhara, the Land of Fate. Far to the west. Past the mountains of Hule. My family is from the city of Huzuz, the City of Delights," she will answer with a smile. "Ishtar is the goddess of Love and also of War. She is known to us as the 'Queen of Heaven'."

"And where are you from?"

It is not long before the group reaches another shore on the opposite bank of the stream. This appears to be the way to the infamous dwarf golem which Chimera told them about. "Have you tried to continue further down the stream?" the priestess asks of Chimera's members in general.
“We did search that way,” Sorvani reports. “The stream continues on much like does here for a time, but then drops off over a ledge. Kaylessa could not see the bottom or anything below. It didn't seem like a way out, assuming that we could even reach the bottom.”

Interesting," the priestess responds, considering for a moment. "Hopefully we can find an easier way out and not have to circumvent that difficult of an impediment."

Reaching the room with the dwarven guardian statue, Vernar climbs the steps and walks tentatively into the room.

"That pretty much confirms the reason for the attacks on the goblins and Chimera squad," she says, to no one in particular.

Vernar proposes a plan with a few options and Butternut, the halfling, agrees to test his suggestion. However, it quickly turns out that the golem doesn't care about the dwarf's presence, as far as Butternut goes. She comes running out amidst a bunch of commotion. The hafling runs down the steps and a few of the others move away also. Erisci was near the front, being shorter than many of her companions, and holds her ground, confident she is much faster than the lumbering stone statue should it continue outside the room.

It comes close and she steps back a step, then another and it stops and returns to its post. Avoiding actually entering the room, the priestess steps up to the top stair, watching the golem and trying to gauge its speed and actions, should their only option be to try and race across the room to the exit.

“That things not very fast,” Kendell notes. “Maybe we could out run it?”

"Hopefully it does not come to that. I am afraid that we would lose one or several of our number should it come to that. Ideally we can escape without more casualties."

Vernar retrieves the ring from the dead goblin and Erisci sees the golem's eyes flash briefly, as the dwarf picks up the ring. Interesting, the ring appears linked to the golem.

Vernar will then make his way back to the group to discuss options. He will reveal that he found another set of runes. "Somethin' called Bollo's Shield, which may be that," he says with a thumb pointing back to the stone dwarf, "or maybe all this, was dedicated 'bout 1100 years ago."

The priestess confirms to Vernar that the golem also flashed. "Interestingly, the golem's eyes also flashed when you retrieved the ring. I would propose it is not a mere coincidence. I could verify that the ring you hold is magickal, but with it's flash you witnessed, I think that is a moot point. Unfortunately, I have no means of identifying the properties of this magickal ring currently. Does it have a command word or phrase engraved upon it?"

Kaylessa
Kaylessa waits as Butternut takes some tentative steps forward with Vernar near, hoping that the presence of a dwarf would be enough to be safe to walk across the plaza.
Much to Kaylessa’s surprise the Stone giant begins to move and chases the halfling and gnome. Kaylessa watches as they run as fast as their legs can carry them to the safety of the stairs.
Soon enough Vernar joins them as the others catch their breath and discusses their options.
“It's possible,” Sorvani agrees. “Provided we actually have a place to run to. Is there a way out past the guardian?”
“If we run past the it there is a chance not all of us will make it. My question does stepping upon the stone plaza activate it. Is there a way to anchor a rope so we travel above the floor?” she says stoically but then Vernar speaks of the ring, causing the elf to change her opinion and puts forth her two cents.
The priestess confirms to Vernar that the golem also flashed. "Interestingly, the golem's eyes also flashed when you retrieved the ring. I would propose it is not a mere coincidence. “If it the ring were based upon race alone that would explain the death of the goblins.” looking at the others, “If the goblins found the ring and thought of the same it is perhaps safe to assume they put it on before reaching the plaza. The body in which you pulled it from, was their any bodies of like decomposition? Perhaps that would tell us if they traveled in a group or single file” She adds thoughtfully.
Looking to Vernar. “Did you feel any different when you took the ring and saw the flash? Sadly I have no means of identifying what magic lies within the ring. Though it seems prudent to say that there is definitely a connection between you and the ring, whether boon or curse remains.”

Lucyus watches in amazement ash eh sees the large dwarf in person and then it begins to move towards the others! Lucyus takes his axe in hand as he steps forward a step, but he quickly sees the others can out distance it. There is a flash of light and for a moment the statues eyes flash.
Lucyus eyes narrow upon the sight and looks to Sorvani. “It seems you may have been right, my new friend. Did the statues eyes flash when you were here last?” he asks curiously.
“Seeing the goblins remains and how it moves, I do not see how our blades would slow that statue down. IF we are able to move passed it, our rear flank would not need to be guard though.” he says looking to the others.
“May I make a suggestion? May I see the ring for but a moment.”Lucyus will watch the statue if Vernar allows him the ring for a moment. “What if this ring knows the difference of friend or foe?”
“Will the statue eyes flash when the ring is returned to Vernar?”he asks curiously. “We may then know the riddle within the runes.”

"Yup," Vardra says in agreement. "No question there."

There is a thunderous pounding from behind him, and Vardra pivots in time to see the stone giant clomping towards them and Butternut leaping down the stairs. Even as Vardra reaches for his sword, the statue stops and returns to its original position.

With no further danger apparent, Vernar moves a bit further into the room and reaches down - apparently for the ring that he had mentioned seeing earlier. Just as he does so, the golem's eyes flash! For a second, Vardra is alarmed that they may still have to fight it, but it doesn't otherwise stir.

"I agree; speed is our only real hope if Vernar cannot find a way to get the stone giant to let us pass. Before we try it though, we should make sure there is somewhere on the other side to run to."

Lucyus conducts a bit of an experiment with Vernar on the ring. Vardra knows he should be watching back the way they came, but his curiosity gets the better of him. Instead, he positions himself to watch the stone guardian and both Lucyus and Vernar to see what happens.

“I have only heard passing takes of distant Zakhara,” Sorvani admits. “You are very far from your home, Priestess. I've never heard of most of those places and your patron does sound like an interesting conundrum. At first glance, love and war do not seem to be related at all, but really they are two sides of the proverbial coin. Strong emotions can drive one to either extreme.”

After graduating, I heard about this wonderful 'opportunity' to sign up with the army. I figured I could gain some experience and wealth instead of just going out looking for random adventure.”

“Right now, thats not looking like my smartest decision”, Sorvani concludes with a laugh.

Sorvani watches as Butternut scampers away from the golem and we all slowly come back. Talk turns to the ring that Vernar found while others offer suggestions and want to test the ring.

"Elemental specialist, really," Butternut replies, thinking back on her early training with Carbunkle, the gnome mage. "I seem to have a... connection to the nature, and this is part of it. Sharing spells does seem like a good idea, though. Ren is a mage as well, so maybe he'd be willing to share too."

The elven woman's question sparks an idea in Butternut's mind. She looks about to see if there is any raised area from which they might try to swing across the open space. Of course, that would also require a place to secure a rope from and a way to do so. Seems unlikely, but worth a look...

There are several comments about both the ring and the golem's eyes having flashed when Vernar picked up the ring. "Clearly, the ring is connected to the golem in some way. If dwarves built this place, it makes sense that they would limit control of the defenses to dwarves. It looks like you're going to have to put it on, Vernar."

Vernar -

The others talk about everything Vernar has shared with them. Soon it becomes apparent that the stone guardian also reacted to the ring when he pulled it from the dead goblin. With all the conversations going on, Vernar re-examines the ring, seeing the runes etched into it and becomes quite certain he knows what to try.
“If we are going to make a run for it, we need a place to run to,” Sorvani continues. “If what beyond that door is a just a dead end, than we are back to where we started.”
"I looked at what lay beyond," Vernar says, and describes what he spied from his vantage point. "Those double doors could be locked or barred, and t'is not worth the risk of trappin' ourselves in such a space. Though we may not need worry 'bout such a plan," he adds, tapping the ring he retrieved.

"Runes on it say 'control'," the dwarf reveals. "So I'mma see if I can herd it into the back corner. Let's hope it don't mean the guardian be controllin' me," he says the last with a wry smile, then turns and walks back into the hall.

Once he is far enough in should the ring prove to be anything but benevolent, Vernar will slip it onto one of his fingers. Not knowing what to expect, he will see what the stone dwarf does, if anything. He will try to think it into the corner, and if that doesn't work, will use verbal commands in dwarvish to send it on its way. With any luck, it will behave and comply.
