Operation: Graystone #5
April 13th, CR 569
The search for Chimera Squad has led Wyvern Squad into the same maze of underground passages. A large cavern that Chimera used as camp site is found and Wyvern Squad uses it as well. Morning comes and Erisciana purifies the group's food from the dunking in the stagnant water. The group quickly eats, making up for not eating since lunch the day before.
Ren goes off to check on the position of the jelly-blob. He heads back to the intersection where the group first encountered it. The blob had gone back to the stagnant pool where Wyvern Squad had landed in this maze. Upon reaching the intersection, Ren can see that the blob has gone down the one passage that the group did not go down before. The glistening on the floor indicates the direction that it went.
Ren makes his way to the pool that you landed in and finds that Sargent Traken and the half-elf's bodies are now gone. From there Ren rushes back to the group to report his findings. In short the Jelly-blob is now believed to be elsewhere in these caves in a place Wyvern Squad has yet to explore and, presumably, has more bodies inside it.
Reunited, Wyvern Squad moves out, heading back to where they saw the arrow etched into the passage wall. Before departing, Erisci casts a Firelight spell on a torch. In response, the torch starts to glow much brighter than normally would be possible. The light covers twice as much diameter than a normal torch, nearly a thirty foot radius. The priestess believes the magic will last several hours.
The group makes their way back to the ghoul cave and then presses on past it. Ren leads the way, with Butternut not far behind followed by Vernar and the rest of the Squad. The glistening here is nearly gone by now with only a spot here and there to reveal that the jelly-blob was even here before. The passage curves off to the right as the group moves down it. After around 100 feet, another cavern can be seen up ahead.
Ren suddenly raises his hand for the group to stop before reaching the cavern. The gnome thought he heard something, but couldn't make out just what. Upon reaching the cavern everyone can faintly hear something now. It takes a while to realize just what the noise is, but it is the sound of running water!
This new cavern is about 30' square and has multiple tunnels leading away from it. Four more are in addition to the one you used to reach the cavern. As the Firelight Torch comes into the cavern you can see several shiny objects in the wall reflecting the light back. No one or thing seems to be about.
Experienced climbers will recognize the items that are reflecting the light in the cavern wall. They are pitons, a tool used by those who climb mountains. There is a whole series of pitons embedded into the cavern wall leading upwards!
Looking up, those with infravision can see that there is an area some forty feet overhead! Perhaps emerging into a different cavern. Even more, the sound of the running water seems to be coming from the hole in the ceiling. The pitons make a trail to this upper area. Only an experienced climber could use them to climb up to the upper area.

Lucyus
After the scouts return, Lucyus hears the report that the jelly blob has visited the site of the sergeant’s resting place, only to remove his body. Lucyus can’t help but feel solemn for a moment knowing someone in life is now feeding a creature of the dark in death.
Following the others, Lucyus eventually sees a glint within the cavern wall then another.

Vernar -
Vernar will search the cavern while we consider our options. He will look for any markings to indicate where the other squad may have gone, but he has his suspicions. Still, it is best to be thorough.

At the fore of the adventuring party, Ren positions himself just outside the invigorated torch's aura. It is only after a few moments that Ren realizes there is another cavern ahead, and straining to listen he barely hears some sort of distant but consistent rustling. He can't make out the source and cautions butternut behind him to stop the group for a moment to investigate ahead. At the mouth of the next cavern he waits briefly, intently listening for the source of the noise. It is too constant to be any danger such as an enemy, and after a moment more of the uninterrupted noise it dawns on him that it is most likely running water from above.
Quickly he returns to the group and ushers them forwards to the next cavern. While Vernar searches the walls on the lower level for further markings Ren pulls the rop from his bag and begins to prep a makeshift harness around his waist and between his legs and putting his cloak away in his bag. Weapons still dangling from his belt he addresses the group, "While not the easiest path forward I believe I'm probably best suited to climb up and see if we can see anything else from above. Lucyus, would you be a lad and hold this end of the rope for me? Make sure I have a little slack and if you see the rope start to slip, should I fall, just hold the rope taught. You may need Butternut if it is a sudden jerk but luckily I happen to be rather dainty." Checking for any markings near the lower pitons, Ren then prepares to climb up the wall, in case of any complaints or different ideas.

Butternut:
===
Despite her fatigue and sleeping hard, the halfling warrior wakes early. Sitting up and looking around, she sees that only a few of the others are stirring yet. Butternut takes a few minutes to pray to Arvoreen for his protection and guidance as they move forward today.
As it seems breakfast is likely to be a little while yet, Butternut pulls the coin purse from pouch she wears on her belt. She pours a few into her hand, then examines one closely, taking in the details of the markings and committing them to memory. Perhaps they will prove informative at some point in the future.
Lucyus is still on watch, so Butternut slips the coins back into the purse, rises, and approaches the large paladin. "Good morning, Lucyus, I've been thinking about it, and I believe that these coins I found in the other cavern should be divided up among whomever of us survives to leave this place. As our chosen leader, I'll leave that to you," she says, handing him the coin purse.
===
It is not long after breaking their fast that they continue on their way, exploring the tunnels to the south. Ren leads the way, with Butternut not far behind. Arvoreen has seen fit to improve her sight in these lightless tunnels, leaving Butternut thankful for the blessing. As a result, she doesn't feel the need to stick quite as close to him as she had previously.
After working their way south for a little while, Ren calls them to a halt, and Butternut passes the signal back toward Vernar. She can just see that the tunnel appears to open into a larger area. At the edge of her hearing, she notes a continuous sound. From her past experience exploring underground, she quickly recognizes the sound as flowing water, though she cannot make out the source.
After consulting with Vernar, Ren soon leads the group into a small cavern. There are four other tunnels exiting from this cavern; hopefully there is some clue as to which way Chimera Squad went. Moving further into the cavern, Butternut notes that the ceiling is beyond the range of her vision, and the sound of water seems to be coming from overhead! What's more, there are pitons in the wall. Eyeing them critically, she decides that the spacing would be somewhat awkward for her, though she's not the most experience climber. Ren, on the other hand, immediately begins preparing to climb.
As Ren and Lucyus focus on his climbing attempt, Butternut joins Vernar in searching the walls for any further markings that may have been left behind. The pitons are certainly a clue, though it is possible that they were left by the goblins, instead. Honestly, she's not really certain whether or not goblins use pitons...

Following the battle with the ghouls, Eri and Butternut find themselves in a theological discussion of sorts. "I can certainly confirm the latter point," Butternut replies grimly. Her mind drifts back to all the time she spent wanting and denying after the death of her family and clanfolk. None of it made one whit of difference in the end, and she was forced to accept what was.Erisciana wrote:"It may sound impossible. Flare Nightstorm -
Well-rested, Flare feels as though he's been asleep for weeks.
He's been impressed with his companions' resourcefulness in dispatching so many denizens of the underground. He's barely had to lift a finger.
Hmm, not very responsible of me, he regrets, as he fiddles in his belongings for a nibbler.
He's no longer hungry, thanks to the food cleansing by Erisciana & Wimzy, but he needs something to combat his urge to drink. He finds a small piece of well-chewed bone. Throws it in his mouth.
Although he's marked their locations throughout the caves with rock scratchings, it's become apparent that the gelatinous blob has removed most of his markings. He will resort to carving more permanent directional arrows into the walls with his dagger, especially if he sees that Chimera Squad's markings are unreliable.
His sense of location is pretty strong, and he feels he has a good fix on the paths that have led them here. If he had to draw a map, it would look eeirly similar to this: https://i.lensdump.com/i/8hZiGT.jpg. (Thank you, Gordon, this is awesome.)
Entering the New Cavern
As they enter the new cavern with the four appendages and the darkened upper reaches, Flare is happy to help Ren with his ropes or assist in any way.
Flare may be tempted to use the pitons himself, but he will let Lucyus, Vernar, or our illustrious DM decide if he should climb.
Also, if a lighted-arrow shot into the spaces above could help illuminate Ren's ascent, Flare will be happy to oblige.
A Source of Light in the Dark of Night. (Unless he's drunk.) (If he's drunk, you're on your own.) (Sorry, I cannot control Flare. He's his own man.)
Re: Operation: Graystone #5
Erisciana -
---------------------------------------------------------
The group prepares to move out and it is a little disconcerting that the gelatinous blob is not located. It must be in an unexplored portion of the caverns, which is also where their group is headed. Still now that they are aware, the scouts should be able to notice it should they encounter it again and it does not appear anywhere fast enough to catch up to them. Still the danger is very real.
It's not far before the group comes upon another cavern. This one with an apparent exit above, besides the four other tunnels leading away. Ren prepares to make a climb, while some of the others check for signs of Chimera's passing. Erisciana will take up a position to keep an eye on the two tunnels to the right of their entrance. Looking up, the light from the Firelight does not quite reach the torch. As yesterday she is limited in her view, just not as poorly as before.
Hopefully they have found a way to bring them closer to Chimera and an escape from these dire caverns.
Erisci sees the dour look form on her teammate's features. She places her hand gently on the halfling's shoulder for a brief moment.Following the battle with the ghouls, Eri and Butternut find themselves in a theological discussion of sorts. "I can certainly confirm the latter point," Butternut replies grimly. Her mind drifts back to all the time she spent wanting and denying after the death of her family and clanfolk. Erisci smiles. "Ishtar watches us with a kind eye this day."Lucyus takes hold of the torch as Erisci lays her hands upon it, enchanting it with her magic. It begins to aglow more intense then a regular torch. “Thank you for your patron’s blessing," as he begins to raise the torch into the air.

Post Continued:
After eating, Wyvern Squad moves down the passage the carved arrow indicated outside the ghoul cave. It short it leads into another large intersection. But more than this, pitons have been embedded in the wall suggesting that someone used them to climb up to a higher level. The sound of water running can be heard coming from overhead.
Ren starts to assemble a crude climbing harness in preparation to use the pitons to climb up. Flare and Lucyus assist in the effort. Once ready, Ren uses the pitons as hand holds and places to step as he moves up the wall. He makes what must be a treacherous climb look easy! The quick gnome reaches the top and climbs up the the new level.
Much to his surprise, the there is a knee wall that surrounds the opening in the chamber above. Metal hand holds are located in this wall and Ren easily climbs up into a new chamber!
The chamber up above superficially resembles the one down below, apart from the hole in its floor. Along the outside of the knee wall around the hole are rings that ropes can be tied to. One rope, fairly new looking, is already tied to one of these rings but is laying in a pile on the floor. It should be long enough to reach the bottom of the chamber below.
There is a ridiculous 8 passages leading away from this area. Of particular note is that a faint orange-ish light can be seen further off in one of the tunnels. The passage to the right of the one with the light down it seems to be where the sound of the water running is coming from. This close it sounds like an underground stream. Nothing is spotted down any of the passage leading away from this area.
Butternut examines the platinum coins she found in a pouch in the ghoul cave. There are 23 coins in all. They each bear the royal seal of Cynalon and do not look particularly old. They are a modern currency. Nothing unusual about them.Butternut wrote:As it seems breakfast is likely to be a little while yet, Butternut pulls the coin purse from pouch she wears on her belt. GM Notes:
Here's a map for the overhead area, as far as Ren can see. The orange g is for the passage with the glow, while the w is the direction the water is. The grey circle is the hole in the floor.
Now what?

Butternut:

As she examines the walls around the intersection cavern, Butternut finds an arrow carved into the wall near the pitons. This one, not surprisingly, points up.
Waving Vernar over, she points out the arrow. "This appears to confirm that Chimera made the climb up from here. Looks like we're on the right track." She looks up to check on Ren's progress, but he is out of sight. While her infravision doesn't reach that far, the torch that Eri enchanted with a touch of her patron's power makes it possible for Butternut to see the hole in the ceiling. "Guess he made it successfully."

Lucyus
Backing up a moment-
As they figure out what the metal in the walls are for Ren looks about and gets the idea to scale the wall for a better idea of what maybe up there.
“Aye, I’ll help you.” Taking the rope in hand. “I’ll give you the slack and do my best with keeping you from the ground. Be careful up there.” As the halfling begins to climb his weapons begin to several moments later he can’t help but look at Vernar and Butternut. “Dainty he is not!”
Backing up a moment-
“Morning Butternut, Trust you slept well?” he asks evenly as he recalls hearing someone snoring. “Are you sure? This is a large sum.” hefting the weight in his hand. “I will see to it.”he says simply stowing away the coins within his pack."Good morning, Lucyus, I've been thinking about it, and I believe that these coins I found in the other cavern should be divided up among whomever of us survives to leave this place. As our chosen leader, I'll leave that to you," she says, handing him the coin purse.

Lucyus does his best to sturdy the rope awaiting the return of the shadow mage. He over hears the others. “Seems so. I did not hear any sounds of trouble yet."He says evenly looking up at the hole.. "If the arrow is pointing up there perhaps up we shall go. In truth I do not like separating us like this. If we do make this climb, I’d like Vernar, Flare and Butternut to make the climb first. Vernar -
The dwarf fails to find much of interest in this new cavern. Of course, considering the big glob sliding around in here somewhere, it has probably eaten or absorbed most everything. Soon, Butternut gets his attention.
Ren deftly makes his way up into the overhead cavern, and so far it is quiet. Lucyus soon makes it known he isn't too keen on having the group split, but Vernar believes the gnome is quite resourceful. Still, he proposes a good plan to get all of us up.
"Give Ren another moment 'r so, then we can make the ascent," Vernar offers, moving over to the pitons and storing his larger weapons. He will judge the climb to determine if the harness is really necessary while waiting to see if Ren offers any information or clues as to what lies above. Once it is time, he will clench a dagger between his teeth just in case before ascending.
The dwarf fails to find much of interest in this new cavern. Of course, considering the big glob sliding around in here somewhere, it has probably eaten or absorbed most everything. Soon, Butternut gets his attention.
Vernar nods, "So it seems."Waving Vernar over, she points out the arrow. "This appears to confirm that Chimera made the climb up from here. Looks like we're on the right track." She looks up to check on Ren's progress, but he is out of sight. While her infravision doesn't reach that far, the torch that Eri enchanted with a touch of her patron's power make is possible for Butternut to see the hole in the ceiling. "Guess he made it successfully."

Re: Operation: Graystone #5
Upon reviewing Flare's map Ren has a little conversation with those still at the base of the climb as he waits to hear any objections from the group. "It would appear most likely to me that the northwest passage would most certainly loop back to our original location." He looks around for any bits of shimmering slime as evidence whether the goo has made it's way this far down the tunnel. "It makes sense then, that if there isn't a shimmer yet, the gelatinous creature may well be on its way here or has already passed through this area down another path. I think it safe to assume it cannot ascend vertically, or moreover I would hope it cannot. Thank you Flare for keeping a map. It is most handy. As for the arrow, I think it would more hinder my night vision rather than help. I'll proceed in the dark, as I am intimately familiar with it."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hah, ascending the vertical wall is a piece of cake. Probably not quite as easy as the uneven cobblestone walls, with nice thick grooves as back when he was running his racket, but the practice has sure paid off. Upon reaching the top, Ren makes mental note of the rope, and first unties his rope and secures it to the wall on one of the rungs furthest from the glowing light. Then, quickly, he pulls some ink and a bit of paper from his pack and scribbles a hurried note, "possible campfire, 8 tunnels, one other rope. Keep quiet, ropes are secured." Then taking one of the unused pieces of cloth, ties the note to the other rope, and begins lowering it down to the others, making sure it doesn't drop the full distance.
Waiting on the others to ascend the wall, he then stands near the northern passage on the edge of the entrance to the glowing passage making sure to keep to the shadows and listens intently for any sounds other than the running water, helping any having trouble cresting the top of the climb.

"Thank you, good sir."Lucyus“Aye, I’ll help you.” Taking the rope in hand. “I’ll give you the slack and do my best with keeping you from the ground. Be careful up there.”

Butternut listens to the instructions from both of the appointed leaders. "Okay, I'll be ready." She has some experience climbing, but is not highly skilled in it like Ren apparently is. Ren has climbed up to a higher level in this maze of cavernous tunnels. In these higher area he has found a chamber with eight exits in it. One of these exits has a glow of some light source further along it. Another passage seems to go to where the sound of running water is coming from.
The gnome removes his own rope and secures it to one of the support rings away from the passage with the glow. Next he quickly writes a note on a piece of cloth and slowly lowers it down below using the other tied off rope that was already here.
Once the rope has been lowered, Ren moves closer to the passage with the glow. He just listens for a time and over the sound of the running water the gnome can just barely make out voices. They are still too far away to hear clearly or even make out the language being spoken.
Down below the opening, those keeping watch will spot the rope being lowered before it reaches the ground. The note tied to the rope is easily spotted. Upon being read, the note simply says, “Possible campfire, 8 tunnels, one other rope. Keep quiet, ropes are secured.”
At this point Vernar was starting to get ready to make the climb like Ren had done. Both ropes are tugged and and they do seem sturdy.
“I'm not much of a climber,” Wimzy speaks up. “Would it be possible to be pulled up?”
GM Notes:
If the order of climber is unchanged with the pair of ropes being lowered, Vernar will easily make the climb to the area above. It is as described last post and Ren is spotted near the entrance to the passage with the glow down it.

Vernar -
Using the rope will be much easier, although the dwarf was looking forward to the other method. Still, this will allow for a quicker ascent. Before placing the dagger between his teeth, Wimzy asks a question.
With that, Vernar makes the climb and gets a quick survey of what Ren had already shared through the note. Making sure Ren is alright and aware of him having made the climb, the dwarf returns his attention to the hole. Placing his dagger back in its sheath, Vernar readies the ropes for the next of their party.

"I did. And you, Lucyus?" Butternut replies. She's a bit sore from the rough ground, but that's nothing new. "Yeah, I'm sure. We're all in this together, and I certainly didn't do anything special to earn it."
“As well as a human can sleep underground I guess.” He says easily, “Truth be told it is not something I am used to.”
“Aye that would be prudent.” He says evenly as he casts a look up to the rocks where Ren has gone. Down below the opening, those keeping watch will spot the rope being lowered before it reaches the ground. The note tied to the rope is easily spotted. Upon being read, the note simply says, “Possible campfire, 8 tunnels, one other rope. Keep quiet, ropes are secured.”
Lucyus sees something lowered on the rope and soon sees that it is a bit of parchment. As it is paseed down, Lucyus sees the script and squints slightly trying to read it. He looks to Vernar as he begins his ascent. As Wimzy calls forth, ““I'm not much of a climber,” Wimzy speaks up. “Would it be possible to be pulled up?”
“It may be possible to put in a loop within the rope. If you sit upon like a seat and hold on you should be no worse for wear. Eri, are you climbing or being pulled up?” He asks the priestess.
Lucyus will stand guard while the others make their ascent. He will make sure to be the last one up. Telling Butternut, “I’ll try to climb but be ready to pull me up if I run into trouble.”

Butternut:
When Lucyus read the note attached to the rope that Ren lowers down, Butternut smiles. "Seems our agile gnomish friend has found something interesting."
Lucyus suggests a loop for Wimzy to ride on, so Butternut shows them how to set up an adjustable harness with the rope for those who need a lift.
Butternut then grabs the other rope that Ren threw down and begins her own climb. She has some training, so she hopes to be able to make it without assistance.

Re: Operation: Graystone #5
Small Update:
Verner has joined Ren in the area overhead. Butternut easily makes the climb up the rope and is soon with them. After that, Butternut and Vernar pull Wimzy up as the priestess stated she had no skill in rope climbing. Erisciana comes up next quickly followed by Flare. That saves Lucyus for last and it takes more effort to pull up the armored follower of Heironeous.
Everyone now finds themselves in center of an area where eight passages are leading off. One has the a steady glow to it and Ren is at the entrance to this passage. The glow, while bright like a campfire, does not waver and flicker like a normal fire would. The light is consistent in its brightness and doesn't seem to flicker.
The passage to the right of the glowing tunnel is where the sound of water is coming from. The noise does not seem that far away, maybe 80-90' or so.
Now everyone can just barely make out voices coming from the opening where the light is coming from. But they are too distant to clearly make out what is being spoken or even what language is being used.
Now what?

Re: Operation: Graystone #5
As everyone has crested, the important nature of the unnatural glow emanating from the tunnel draws Ren's focus. The indistinguishable voices are worrying and the tension of not know where their foes are is tiresome. He whispers to the group "Be they friend or foe, who should know? It is not a natural light however. Do we put the fighters to the fore and go in? I reckon I could disguise as a goblin to investigate, and if seen scamper off back here so we might have a better space to fight them. These tunnels seem pretty cramped for fighting. If it's Chimera squad I can reveal and lead you to them. Does anyone have the orders from the Sergeant as proof I'm Wyvern squad?"

Butternut:
With the benefit of her training, Butternut is able to climb the rope with relative ease. Poking her head up through the hole, she sees Vernar preparing to lift Wimzy. A little further away, Ren appears to be keeping an eye on the various tunnels leading away.
"All clear, Ren?" she asks quietly, not wanting to bring up the others if there are immediate threats nearby.
With no imminent danger, Wimzy is next up, and Vernar needs little help from Butternut to lift her, tiny as she is. Next is Erisciana; working together with Vernar, they are able to lift her with little trouble. Flare proves to be a bit more of a challenge, but with effort, Vernar and Butternut are able to bring him up safely. This leaves Lucyus.
"Flare, can you give us a hand with Lucyus?" Butternut asks. Another pair of hands seems warranted, considering the size of the armored human warrior.
Butternut calls softly down to Lucyus, instructing him in attaching the second rope to the harness formed from the first rope. Once that is done, she joins Flare at the second rope while the stout dwarf takes the first. "Everyone ready?" she whispers. "Heave!"
Bracing her legs in a wide stance at the edge of the low wall around the opening, Butternut leans well back to get maximum leverage on the rope. Long, slow minutes pass as they raise Lucyus hand-span by hand-span. By the time he crests the opening, her back is burning and her legs shaking from the effort. Lucyus is able to pull himself up over the lip, so Butternut turns and sits on the wall to rest. A quick sip of water and a bite of bread help her strength to return quickly.
Moments later, Ren returns and addresses the team.

Lucyus
That saves Lucyus for last and it takes more effort to pull up the armored follower of Heironeous.
Lucyus holds the torch aloft as he watches the others take the climb or lifted to the safety of rock above. Hearing the echoes within the cavern, Lucyus looks about as the others are raised up. After several minutes it becomes his turn.
Securing his axe and shield, Lucyus takes the rope as Butternut calls down from above just barely a whisper.

Lucyus does as he is instructed and secures the harness about him then gives it a tug as if to say ready.
Lucyus will try to keep hold of the torch. If it becomes to difficult to carry it he will let it drop. Several minutes pass as his feet scamper the side of the wall as he spins slightly at the mercy of those above. As he grows closer to the crest he can hear the others struggling to bring him up.
Finally, his head crests the rock and he bring his hands and arms to bare gritting his teeth as he takes some of his weight. ( He will toss the torch away from the others as not to burn them. Taking deep breathes, Lucyus labors as he feels his weight more secured. As he becomes safe. He flops on his back looking at the dark ceiling. After a moment, he gains his footing and retrieves the torch.
Looking at Butternut, “ You have my thanks.” He says easily. “ If there is a next time. We will do so differently, I know my weight is much for you to bare.”
“If you wish to try, do so but take heed. If it were me I would still attack, as I would take it as a goblin trick and try to spit your head with my axe.” Lucyus says evenly hoping that Ren does not take offense.
“I wonder.” He says to no one in particular as he tries to detect evil in the direction of the firelight. “ Ren if you run to us make yourself known.
Lucyus will be ready to run forward if the scouts run into trouble.

If that is Chimera Squad and they see a goblin, I am sure that they will see to your demise.”"Be they friend or foe, who should know? It is not a natural light however. Vernar -
Helping the non-climbers up starts off as an easy enough task. Once we get to the most heavily armored of our group, Butternut seems to be mentally preparing for the heavy lifting.
"Jus' put yer back into it," Vernar says with an easy smile. Gods, but he be a heavy one, Vernar thinks to himself as finally the paladin reaches the lip where he can help pull himself up.
"Maybe nex' time we pull yer armor an' weapons up first, then you," the dwarf says mirthfully as he sits down with a thump and wipes his brow. "Still, it is done now."
Ren makes out some voices coming from one of the many passageways up here. There is some discussion, but the scouts should definitely go ahead and verify whether it is the lost squad or not. Vernar agrees with Lucyus that a goblin disguise is likely not the best option despite not knowing who exactly is ahead.
Once everyone is ready, the dwarf will move to advantageous spot at the mouth of the passage with his throwing daggers at the ready should the scouts return in a hurry with foes on their heels.

Wyvern Squad is reunited once more in the area above. Those who look cannot find any glistening on the ground in the immediate area, so there does not appear to be any jelly-blobs around. Attention is given to the passage where the fire-like, but not really a campfire, glow is coming from. Voices can be faintly heard from down that direction.
Ren suggests disguising himself to check out the area, but those offering an opinion disagree. Instead the scouts creep forward once more, while the less stealthy members bring up the distant rear carrying the torch Erisciana magically amplified.
As the group moves along, Butternut has a revelation about the mysterious light. She's seen light like this before during her times underground. The light is from molten lava! The illumination it puts out is bright enough for those who cannot otherwise see in the dark to make out their surroundings.
The passage heads in a mostly straight direction for a good 80-90 feet before it turns to your left. As the group gets closer the voices become more distinct. They are speaking in the common human tongue! From what you can hear, the group is going over their options.
“As I see it, its our only option,” a man states off in the distance. “But not all of us will make it out alive. But if we sit here and do nothing, we're going to die anyway.”
The scouts reach the corner and can see that the tunnel runs about another seventy feet and comes to an end. Several figures can be seen sitting or standing near the back of the cavern. The bright light seems to be coming from a crack in the ground in the back of the cavern. Clearly the lava is flowing somewhere deeper underground and it is illumination this cavern.
As the scouts get closer, they can see a collection of three human males and a female elf. Suddenly, the elf gestures for her companions to be silent and her hand goes to her blade. All four of the group look back down the tunnel and can see the scouts as they start to approach.
One of the men comes forward. He's of average height and has his dark hair pulled back into a tight pony tail. The man wears normal clothes and has a sword and dagger sheathed on his belt.
“Do you have a dwarf among you?” the man calls out in common cautiously.
When Vernar comes into sight, the man breaks out into a wide grin. “By the gods we might just survive this ordeal!”
“Forgive my manners,” the man continues. “I am Sorvani Caladon. The lady is Kaylessa. The men are Vardra and Kendell. We're Chimera Squad and who might you be?”

Erisciana -
The group has found a means to depart this level, presumably following the path set out by the elusive Chimera squad which they were sent to locate. Ren goes up first to scout and with the immediate area clear, the rest of Wyvern Squad ascend to the above level. The priestess has never done this sort of climbing before.
“It may be possible to put in a loop within the rope. If you sit upon like a seat and hold on you should be no worse for wear. Eri, are you climbing or being pulled up?” Lucyus asks the priestess.
"I have not climbed many ropes and don't profess to be as adept as Ren, but I think I can manage with some assistance." With help she makes the climb. While not the most physically strong, she is rather dexterous and also unencumbered.
In no short amount of time, all the member of Wyvern squad has ascended to the higher level. While the last few are ascending, and the priestess would be of little help in pulling Lucyus up from the ground level, she will observe the glowing light source. It is constant, unlike the flicker of a torch, and Erisci tries to determine if it is magickal in nature. She doesn't think it is. Perhaps something naturally occurring.
Ren suggests scouting the voices down the corridor in goblin form and the priestess is unable to conceal her initial surprise. Fortunately Lucyus and Vernar agree that this is an unwise course of action and the scouts move out ahead. The paladin and the dwarf take up positions of defense at the mouth of the cavern where the mysterious light and more mysterious voices emanate. With seven other passageways leading to their current location, Erisci moves to Flare and suggests they keep their eyes on other possible ambushes. They made enough noise in the climb and may have attracted other attention.

Vardra Marcus
This mission is NOT going well. Sure, it started out well enough, but then they fell afoul of that infernal trap and wound up in these gods-forsaken tunnels. Within hours of arriving at the foot of the lookout station, Roleth was dead, that berserk dwarf Tagith had run off, and Sergeant Dewcan had gone searching for him.
Vardra would have stayed in the first cave as ordered, of course, but the others insisted on leaving a few hours later when the first torch died. He had his lantern for light, but a good soldier doesn't desert his squad. After a night sleeping in a large cave, they found a way up to this level, along with the body of Sergeant Dewcan. Another good man gone, and no sign of Tagith. And now they appear to be stuck here with no good way forward and no food to eat for three days.
Vardra plows on, not waiting for a reply. "Our orders are clear: we are to make our way to the lookout station at the top of the hill. Only the door past that dwarven golem shows any promise of completing our assigned mission. Maybe if we split up and go around both sides of the room, at least one pair will reach the doorway alive."
Suddenly, Kaylessa indicates that they are not alone. Vardra snatches his shield up from where it leans against a rock and yanks his bastard sword from its sheath. "Who goes there?" he calls out, even as Solvani steps forward. There appear to be two small people near the mouth of this funnel-shaped cave, but they are hard to make out in the shadows. Still, they don't look quite like goblins, and don't immediately attack.
As Sorvani addresses the intruders, a third smallish person steps forward. In the light, it is clearly a dwarf. "Gods be praised," Vardra murmurs, and slides his sword back into its sheath. Their need is great, and the gods have seen fit to deliver them.

They've been discussing this for nearly an hour, but the dismal facts of their situation have not changed, and they seem no closer to agreement. Kaylessa
Dark, Dank, Hungry. These are things that Kaylessa and her team had dealt with over the past few days. They had already lost three of their team. One in battle, one in bloodlust and the one that ran after him. The expedition started off well enough but soon went south as she did not see the trap and they fell to a watery hole. Only to be attack by goblins shortly after.
Roleth fell in battle. Talgith in his berserker rage ran after the fleeing goblins, lost to us. Sgt. Dewcan ordered them to stay put and wait for his return. That was the last she had seen of him as they waited near the waters edge.
“They have been gone to long.” She said as the torch began to flicker and die. It was soon decided to move on, Kaylessa moved to Roleth’s body and took several rags from his tattered clothes.
Carving arrows into the walls, Chimera moved along. They found a creature feasting upon a body. Quickly the ghoul was dispatches and the body was that of their Sgt.
“This is no way for one to die.” She says evenly as she pushes her black hair from her face. Not having a cleric with them they decided to leave the body, or what was left of it where it lay and moved on.
They soon found their way to a large cavern where Kaylessa was able to climb above and drop a rope. Light came from one of the caverns and investigating, she soon found a place they could use for their base of operations.
Talking with the others, Kaylessa sets off to find Talgith. Sadly ,that never happened as she came racing back toward the cavern. Calling to the others as she ran she grabbed the rope and started climbing. She looked back and saw the verocity and hunger in the eyes of the ghouls. As she found her footing up above. She let out and elvish curse. She couldn’t help but feel that this expedition or mission was indeed cursed.
They have found a cavern that look to bare fruit only to have a giant dwarf statue animate and come after them. It was not sedated by the countless goblins it had killed. It must be a guardian for whatever lays beyond those doors.
Flash forward till now.
They've been discussing this for nearly an hour, but the dismal facts of their situation have not changed, and they seem no closer to agreement.
A faint sound comes to her ears, as she slowly methodically reaches for her blade while holding her hand up to the others to grab their weapons. “We are no longer alone.” She says evenly as he green eyes peer into the darkness as she rises up to meet whatever is there.
“Do you have a dwarf among you?” the man calls out in common cautiously.
“More importantly do you have any food.” She asks looking from Sorvanni to the children? No not children… Gnome and halfling if I am not mistaken. Then a dwarf moves into her line of sight.
Her shortsword is held loosely in her hand as Sorvanni introduces our team to the new comers. “Kaylessa Coralen, and I am no lady.” She says with a smirk as one of her braids falls down to her face. She looks to the new comers and asks. “Who are you and what brings you to our humble home?”

Butternut:
===
Talk turns to exploring the glowing cave.
===
Before long, they are moving down the hallway in the direction of the light. As they approach, a realization dawns on Butternut. Gliding closer to Ren, she whispers, "I think the light may be coming from lava. That would explain why it doesn't flicker."
A few moments later, they reach a curve in the passage and the voices become more distinct. They are speaking Cynallonian! Moving closer for a look, they can see three humans and an elf. Their words bear a hint of desperation; clearly they have have not fared well these last few days. Despite their attempts at stealth, the elven woman detects Butternut's and Ren's presence and signals her companions. Though there are but four of them, they prepare to defend themselves.

"I'm trying," Butternut grunts in reply, "but my back is much smaller than him..."Vernar wrote:"Jus' put yer back into it," Vernar says with an easy smile. Gods, but he be a heavy one, Vernar thinks to himself as finally the paladin reaches the lip where he can help pull himself up.
"Don't worry about it, Lucyus," Butternut replies, still breathing heavily. "There will come times when your size is a significant advantage. We just have to work together and take advantage of our different abilities."Lucyus wrote:Looking at Butternut, “ You have my thanks.” He says easily. “ If there is a next time. We will do so differently, I know my weight is much for you to bare.”
Butternut grins tiredly at the dwarven warrior. "I like that idea."Vernar wrote:"Maybe nex' time we pull yer armor an' weapons up first, then you," the dwarf says mirthfully as he sits down with a thump and wipes his brow. "Still, it is done now."

Talk turns to exploring the glowing cave.
Butternut holds up her hands in resignation, a smirk crinkling her features. "Fair enough. I'll not argue with a dwarf twice my weight..."Vernar wrote:"I can move quietly enough," Vernar replies, "but the two o' you do it better."

Sorvani:
It seemed like a good idea at the time. Sign up with the army for a short term adventure. Be part of a larger group so a budding mage such as himself would have others around to protect him. It would be an excellent way to start out what promises to be a long and illustrious adventuring career.
Then we fell into that trap, were attacked by goblins and three of our numbers killed. But we found a way out, or so we thought. A way that was guarded by a large creature the looked like a stone dwarf. A golem of some type was Sorvani's guess. Since it seemed that dwarves were the ones who created this ancient trap, it stood to reason that a dwarf could get past it as well. Alas, that was the one thing we were out of since that fool Tagith ran off consumed by berserker rage and was never seen again.
For three days we endeavored to survive down here. Fresh water had been found, but no food and we were all very hungry. Options were quickly running out as were our choices.
“As I see it, its our only option,” Sorvani tells his companions. “But not all of us will make it out alive. But if we sit here and do nothing, we're going to die anyway.”
Two members of the smaller races approaching. A gnome and a halfling by the looks of it. Sorvani moves forward upon seeing them in the lava light. He's of average height and has his dark hair pulled back into a tight pony tail. The man wears normal clothes and has a sword and dagger sheathed on his belt. The sword is now in his hand as if ready for battle.
“Do you have a dwarf among you?” Sorvani calls out cautiously.

“All I know is that a golem is a magical creature, so magic and magical weapons are needed to harm it,” Sorvani says, trying to remember the teachings of his master Terari. “Magic Missile would probably work, but I doubt we could do enough damage to kill it in one go.”Kaylessa wrote:“Do we know of any spells that could damage the statue golem from a distance?” She asks hopefully knowing their options are indeed all but exhausted.
“Our orders are irrelevant!” Sorvani calls out. “We have no idea what lies beyond that door, other than probably a bunch of goblins judging by all the bodies. The people who gave those orders do not know that the lookout is a trap for large group. We need to get out of here and report back what this outpost really is. Before anyone else suffers our fate.”Vardra wrote:They've been discussing this for nearly an hour, but the dismal facts of their situation have not changed, and they seem no closer to agreement. Re: Operation: Graystone #5
Kendell:
It was an offer too good to pass up! Free gear, free lodging and free food! What could be better than that? And so after hearing the recruiter talk about what was going down way over on the other side of the kingdom, Kendell decided what he was going to do with his life! He craved a life of adventure and excitement and he was sure he wasn't going to find it down on the farm in Plowman's Stand.
Next spring, Kendell Shearman left the only home he had known, kissed his mama goodbye, shook his father's hand, and said farewell to some of his other family that had shown up for the occasion. On that cold spring morning, Kendell began his journey to the distant city of Crossroads and to join the army get the challenge he sought.
The lines were long when Kendell finally did arrive in Crossroads about two weeks later. Once signed up and given his signing bonus, Kendell was directed to one of the side rooms where he met the rest of his squad. Some gear was given freely, while the signing gold could be used to buy more. Kendell picked up a fresh suit of chain mail armor, a nice shield and sword to use in battle.
The next day we were moved along with other soldiers to Fort Graystone. It was day long ride, but it beat walking like the regular soldiers had to do! Our stay at Fort Graystone was just one night as we were already off on a grand adventure! We were to travel to a distance outpost. Kendell was quite sure why, but it didn't matter to him. It was bound to be exciting!
Just how exciting, he had no idea! After a crazy slide down the mountain, we landed in a tainted pool. The commander managed to get a torch lit, but just as he did a passel of goblins attacked us! Kendell tore into the goblins, killing several of them. That soldier fellow seemed skilled in fighting as well, but none of us fought like that dwarf did! He yelled and screamed and used worlds to describe goblins that Kendell had never even heard before! In the end, the goblins ran, but the dwarf ran off after them. That seemed to make that sergeant fellow angry, so he also ran after him.
That was the last we ever saw of them. Time passed. The half-elf with us died from the goblin fight. The soldier and the mage argued for a time, but in the end we agreed that we needed to find a place to rest for the night. Without the torch none of us could see our hand before our face, except for the elf lady.
Next day we found a way to go up and out of this maze of caves! But there were just more caves. The cave with the glowing fire was found as was the fresh water stream. A nice bath followed and even better there was glowing stuff on the cave walls so we could see a little. Funguy is what the mage called it. I couldn't see what was fun about it or how he could even tell it was a boy from looking at it. It looked like moss to me, but how can you argue with someone as smart as the mage?
We wandered on and found what we thought was an exit! But there was this gigantic stone dwarf guarding it! It was at least three feet taller than Kendell and its arms ended in weapons. Kendell wondered how it could eat with weapons for arms. Scratching an itch had to be painful!
We crept closer, ignoring the bodies of the dead goblins around it. Wouldn't you know it, the stone dwarf started to move and so we ran! We looked for another way out, but couldn't find one. Things were start to go from bad to worse.
The elf lady sensed that something was coming with her supernatural elf powers! And sure enough, a couple of little people could be seen getting closer! Everyone with for their weapons and Kendell did too. Grabbing his sword and shield, Kendell rose to his feet the new arrivals can see that he is very tall, 6'5” in height! His hair and eyes are black, with a matching beard. His looks are above average.
The mage, the soldier and the elf lady do most of the talking. These strangers don't seem to be trouble, so Kendell will relax and store his sword once more.
“Howdy folks,” Kendell says with a wave. “Like the lady elf said, do you have anything to eat? We're starving!”

The Mage wrote:“As I see it, its our only option,” Sorvani tells his companions. “But not all of us will make it out alive. But if we sit here and do nothing, we're going to die anyway.”
The Soldier wrote:They've been discussing this for nearly an hour, but the dismal facts of their situation have not changed, and they seem no closer to agreement. Vardra runs a hand through his dark hair, and turns to regard the mage with his piercing blue-green eyes. "You are right that we cannot stay here, Sorvani. We will starve to death if we wait much longer."
“That thing reminds of a bear in the woods,” Kendell offers with his country twang. “When running from a bear, you don't have to be the fastest, just not the slowest.”The Lady Elf wrote:“You have seen how fast that thing can move. The moment we step forth it would be on us."
“I could try to fish in that stream again,” Kendell offers. “Water that clean should have some fish in it.”The Mage wrote:“Aye,” Sorvani agrees with Kaylessa. “We all saw how mutilated those goblins were. One good hit will take out any one of us.”

Vernar -
Vernar stays by the passage entrance until it becomes apparent that it stretches on for some time. With a cautious look back at the rest of the group, the dwarf nods to his companions and begins moving forward, leaving plenty of room should the scouts need to return this way in a hurry. As he picks his way further along, staring ahead and not at the narrowness of the cavern around him, he hears something. What? Voices? Soon enough, Ren and Butternut step into what looks like a larger cavern illuminated with unwavering light. Then the voices are clearly heard, and one question perks his curiosity.
Vernar will motion for the rest of his group to come inside. Then he will unsling his pack and start rummaging through it for his dry rations.
"Aye, we have a bit o' food," replying to Kaylessa and the others. "It won't last long 'tween all o' us, but mor'n enough fer now."

Vernar steps forward into the cavern, putting his throwing daggers away once it becomes clear we have found members of the lost squad. Other questions are asked, but as soon as they spot him, Vernar's eyebrows rise at the response.“Do you have a dwarf among you?” Sorvani calls out cautiously.
"That be t' first time I was ev'r greeted so warmly," Vernar replies, curious as to why they would be so desperate for a dwarf among them. However, first things first.A few moments later, a dwarf comes come into sight and Sorvani breaks out into a wide grin. “By the gods we might just survive this ordeal!”

Sorvani:
Even better they have food! While he knew he was hungry, Sorvani had no idea just how hungry until he started to eat!
“Thank you for this,” Sorvani utters between bites. “We've had nothing to eat for days now. We think we found a way out. I suspect that dwarves built this-- this deathtrap a long time ago. The trap itself is the lower caverns, but the dwarves had this higher level so that they could go down and clean out the caves below. Make sure everyone down there was dead, loot bodies, that sort of thing.”
“There is an underground stream nearby. You can easily travel downstream and reach another set of caves and tunnels. In that area we found worked stairs leading up to a hallway. Guarding this hallway is a 9' tall stone dwarf that has weapons for hands. There were dead goblins all around it, some fresh kills, others much older. My guess is that this stone dwarf is a magical guardian that only lets a dwarf pass by safely. When we got too close, the stone dwarf started to move so we retreated. At the far end of the hallway was an open door. I think that's where the goblins came from and that area was the dwarfs center of operations. We should be able to reach the surface from there and report back what happened to all of us. It's my hope that the stone dwarf will remain inert in the presence of a dwarf. Than we can all get out of here. Otherwise, we'll be running for our lives.”

The dwarf motions for what Sorvani guesses to be the rest of Wyvern Squad to come into the cave. Vardra Marcus, PFC
"Well met, Butternut. We may yet fight our way out of this terrible place."
Sorvani starts in telling the newcomers of what they have found. The man likes to talk, and Vardra will leave him to it.
Between bites of food, he turns to the gnome. "You've been awfully quiet. Who might you be, sir gnome?"
Vardra is aghast that anyone could utter such vileness. 'Orders? Irrelevant?!' Before Vardra can stop sputtering and retort in indignation, Kaylessa warns them of others nearby.Sorvani wrote:“Our orders are irrelevant!” Sorvani calls out. “We have no idea what lies beyond that door, other than probably a bunch of goblins judging by all the bodies. The people who gave those orders do not know that the lookout is a trap for large group. We need to get out of here and report back what this outpost really is. Before anyone else suffers our fate.”
"Ah, more solders, then. Good." Relief is clear on the young soldier's face. He bears military insignia on the uniform peeking out from under his armor. Those familiar with the Cynallonian Army may recognize the markings as indicating his rank as that of Private First Class.Butternut wrote:Butternut steps into the light next to Vernar so they can see her better. "We are Chimera Squad, and were sent to find you. My name is Butternut, last survivor of Clan Foxburr." She will leave it to the others to introduce themselves as they see fit.
"Well met, Butternut. We may yet fight our way out of this terrible place."
Vardra pauses. He hadn't considered the possibility that Wyvern Squad might have had as rough a go getting here as Chimera had. Only three of them left? How many more lives has this treacherous place stolen? Still, with one of them a dwarf, perhaps together they will be sufficient.Sorvani wrote:“Well met, Butternut,” Sorvani states. “Are you three all who are left of Wyvern Squad?”
The dwarf doesn't introduce himself, but offers food instead. Good enough for the nonce. "Thank you, good dwarf. I thank you from the bottom of my heart... and stomach." Vardra does his best to avoid stuffing himself, and quickly finds that he can only eat a small amount because more would be too much of a shock to his system. He will have to go gradually and hope to recover over time.Vernar wrote:Vernar will motion for the rest of his group to come inside. Erisciana -
The scouts move out as the priestess, Flare, Vernar and Lucyus remain guard. Lucyus watches the path the scouts travel down, as does Vernar, standing a little bit into the tunnel leading away from their room. Flare and Erisci watch the other remaining 7 tunnels for possible ambushes or other trouble.
After a few minutes, the scouts must leave our dwarven leader's view as he glances back and then moves further into the tunnel, following the two diminutive scouts. The light from her Firelight does not reach far enough to see what is happening. If they are quiet, voices can be heard echoing down the tunnel, but they are too far to determine if they are the same as they heard previously or that of their 3 scouts or both.
Erisciana looks warily at her two remaining companions and frowns. "It appears we are 'in the dark', both figuratively and somewhat literally as to what is happening. Fortunately there have been no surprises here as yet." She moves a little closer to Lucyus, while still keeping an eye on the other passages.

Re: Operation: Graystone #5
As they travel down the path toward the voices, it becomes clear they are not goblins and Ren begins to relax, at ease with what he is sure to find at the end of this passage. Lost a bit internally in thought as they approach the source of light he is brought back by a shifting form beside him.
Tense as the initial moment is, it quickly dissipates when Vernar rounds the corner and enters the light. As he begins to offer food, Ren unslings his own pack and offers forward a day's rations saving the other day's rations for himself.
Listlessly leaning against the wall, Ren merely listens and observes the situation at first, Chimera squad's gaunt faces, their sense of relief, ravenous eating, and discussion of a Vigilant Guardian in a further section of the cavern. This piques his interest most of all.
Ren lazily whispers back with a thoughtful expression, "Genius! Though now I am left to wonder how deep ARE we?! Lava isn't common above a ground level." Well, they find out soon enough as they turn the corner cautiously to find the remains of Chimera squad, already aware of their presence.Butternut
Gliding closer to Ren, she whispers, "I think the light may be coming from lava. That would explain why it doesn't flicker."

"Huh?" Caught off guard, Ren looks around briefly. "Oh me? Simply a shadow without light. But you may call me Ren. Also, to answer your question, Sorvani was it? There are more of us, we managed to only lose our sergeant to the initial fall. I imagine they will join us shortly, Butternut would you be a dear? More importantly, you mention having to follow the stream to reach this door, so there is no way through one of these other 7 tunnels? I assumed that the lower area was a dead end/loop when we arrived at the upper level, but I had assumed this upper level would have more structure to it. Have you collected any notes or kept a map for yourselves? Any dwarven markings or did the golem attempt to speak? Oh, sorry. Golems are most likely what one calls the construct you found guarding the door. Automated constructs of a rather quite fascinating design, though also rather shortsighted in terms of their tasks. I would agree with Sorvani that there should be a way to pacify the construct, though I am not so sure it is as simple as being a dwarf. Rather surly fellows, known for long grudges, and unnecessary hair. They can fight amongst themselves as well so I can't imagine just ANY dwarf being safe to go by. However, though they may have some ingenuity, I can see them cutting the depth of their programming short. Hmmm....quite an interesting quandry."Vardra

Lucyus
“It would appear they have found something of worth.” Moving forward Lucyus rests his hand on Flare’s shoulder for but a moment, as he hears unfamiliar voices and he sees Vernar bend down and begins to pull out rations. The paladin looks past the dwarf where several humans and a elf stand before them. “Or someone.”
Lucyus enters as the others begin to speak of what they experience, Lucyus stows his axe behind his head, looking at the one speaking: a dark haired human with his hair tied back. Sword and no armor. A fighter it would seem judging by the blade. His eyes filter to the next as he comes to a man with a dark beard, an insignia peaks just below his armor causing the Paladin’s eyes to narrow a fraction and he crosses his arms before his chest gauging him. Most definitely a soldier seeing the man stand, watching his subtle mannerisms. Next his eyes fall upon a mountain of a man, dark hair and beard, a sword upon his hip. A fighter it would seem as well. His eyes shift finally to the elf, looking at her green eyes for a moment, noticing the weapons and clothes that she carries.
Realizing he is being rude he speaks up as the Flare and the others come forward toward the lava light(if). Lucyus finds it interesting that they believe this to be the work of dwarves but given what he saw below it would make sense.
“Forgive me, I did not introduce myself. I am Lucyus of Heironeous."
Lucyus eyes narrow as he watches and waits. He flexes his hands upon his axe awaiting the call to come to their friends aid or the troubling relief of an empty area. His thoughts are his own as he hears Eriscana stir beside him.Vernar will motion for the rest of his group to come inside. Then he will unsling his pack and start rummaging through it for his dry rations.
“It is darkest before the dawn.” He says absently then smirks as his eyes look to the priestess. “At least we have food, water and light; But I share your sentiment,” looking over his shoulder for a moment, then back to the where the scouts went. A flicker of movement catches his eyes as he sees Vernar motioning to them."It appears we are 'in the dark', both figuratively and somewhat literally as to what is happening. Fortunately there have been no surprises here as yet." She moves a little closer to Lucyus, while still keeping an eye on the other passages.

A flicker of movement catches his eyes as he sees Vernar motioning to them.
"Indeed it is often true," Erisciana agrees. "And thanks to Ishtar we are indeed provisioned with necessities, goddess be praised." Somehow, Lucyus and Vernar manage to communicate despite the tunnel being over 100 feet long and with a significant bend to it. Perhaps they have some magickal item that she was not made aware of. Erisci thinks to ask them about it later.
As Lucyus moves out, the priestess looks to Flare and Wimzy quizzically. But as the Firelight torch is leaving, she needs to follow or be left in the dark. After a short walk down the tunnel it starts to bend and the orange glow lights the remainder of the passage to another cavern. Erisciana steps into the cavern a short moment after Lucyus. She misses all of their introductions, but hears Ren chastise Lucyus for his last comment.

The priestess sputters out an uncontrolled surprised and quick laugh. "If not for faith, your stomach would be as empty as a pauper's purse, my dear gnome. If you've forgotten, it is only by trust in the goddess that our spoiled food was made wholesome and edible once more. I am certain that the ghoul that met our fair Wimzy would argue your contention as well. If it had a head left to do so. Faith may very well be the most powerful force in our entire universe."
Her peace stated, Erisci takes in the other new individuals discovered by the scouts. A Cynalon soldier. Another massive fighter. A female elf. Each armed with blades. The priestess' eyes narrow a bit at the fourth member of what must be Chimera Squad and the one referred to as Sorvani. His features reminded her of that foul wench Zakiti. Rat-faced people were not to be trusted. She would keep her distance from this one.

Lucyus is about to retort to the gnome but Erisci does so eloquently. “Forgive Ren, he is impulsive.” Looking at the gnome albeit briefly, “I only wished to point out that you seem to lack clerical magic. There is a chance it may be needed as well. And if you are wrong about having a dwarf near, Sorvani, Than you surely will.”"Oh pish posh! Faith only goes so far, if it really goes anywhere at all. Butternut:
Introductions are made, in part at least. So this is Chimera Squad, or what's left of it...
The quartet's next concern is food, as they have not eaten in days. Vernar opens his backpack and begins sharing what he has. Butternut unslings her pack and does likewise. "I can share some, too. Here you go," she says handing some of her food to whomever is nearest.
Once Chimera has some food in them, the story of their interest in a dwarf comes out. Apparently they found what they think might be a way out, but it is guarded by an animated statue that looks like a giant dwarf. They seem to think that the presence of a dwarf will pacify the golem. Butternut isn't sure it's going to be that easy, but only one good way to find out.
It is not long before Ren provokes their priestly companions with his sardonic comments. Amused, Butternut finds a place to sit with her back against the wall to watch the show while sipping some water and munching on a piece of bread.
Ren's observation makes sense, which creates a bit of a puzzle. "Good point, Ren. I don't really know. Maybe this area was once volcanic, so the lava is close to the surface?"Ren wrote:Ren lazily whispers back with a thoughtful expression, "Genius! Though now I am left to wonder how deep ARE we?! Lava isn't common above a ground level." Well, they find out soon enough as they turn the corner cautiously to find the remains of Chimera squad, already aware of their presence.
Butternut has seen some odd things in her life, but is startled by this bizarre question from these strangers they just encountered. Why would that be their first concern before even knowing whom they have just met? Collecting her wits, she turns to summon Vernar, only to see him step into the light almost immediately. The delighted response from the bedraggled quartet is unanimous, and almost as puzzling as the question.Sorvani wrote:“Do you have a dwarf among you?” Sorvani calls out cautiously.
"Nah, we're just the quieter ones," Butternut replies with a smirk. "We make the noisy folk follow far behind so they don't ruin our opportunity for surprise with their racket. I'm sure the others will arrive eventually."Sorvani wrote:“Well met, Butternut,” Sorvani states. “Are you three all who are left of Wyvern Squad?”
The shorter man with dark hair speaks up. Sorvani introduced him as... Vardra, was it? Butternut chuckles. "Well met, Vardra. 'Soldier'... that's a bit of a stretch, I'm thinkin'. We're adventurers who agreed to help with this particular operation. The only real soldier in our group, Sergeant Traken, died yesterday when we fell into the muck-encrusted pool."Vardra wrote:"Ah, more solders, then. Good." Relief is clear on the young soldier's face. He bears military insignia on the uniform peeking out from under his armor. Those familiar with the Cynallonian Army may recognize the markings as indicating his rank as that of Private First Class.
"Well met, Butternut. We may yet fight our way out of this terrible place."
Introductions are made, in part at least. So this is Chimera Squad, or what's left of it...

Kaylessa
Kaylessa’s brow furls as she hears his comments. “A lost soul than? She asks curiously looking the gnome over as she pops some dried fruit. “I can recall the area well enough , Sadly I did not make a map.” She says evenly and then laughs slightly to herself. “Truth be told, I did not notice much of the golem. Between the rumble of the earth beneath us and running for our lives. I did not wish to look behind me. “
Several moments later the sound of armor sounding off the rock face can be heard. Figures can be seen coming forward in the low light steadily growing clearer. Humans and another halfling. A dark haired human in chainmail comes forward and speaks:
Kaylessa notices two women, one halfling and another human. For a long moment she looks the them over and sees pendants about their persons. “Looking away from Lucyus, she introduces herself to the new comers. “Welcome and thank you your hospitality.” indicating the rations their team mates have so graciously shared. “My name is Kaylessa Coralen of Clan Long Run…Chossum.”she says catching herself as she smiles slightly at the halfling and dark haired woman,(Flare to if he comes forward)
“It is a shame that we cannot trip the beast. I only hope that if we are able to pass it that it does not follow us…”she looks to the mage her green eyes piercing him.“All I know is that a golem is a magical creature, so magic and magical weapons are needed to harm it,” Sorvani says, trying to remember the teachings of his master Terari. “Magic Missile would probably work, but I doubt we could do enough damage to kill it in one go.”
“Now is not the time to argue.” She says her eyes darting between the soldier and mage. “As I see it, Our orders are forfeit, at least until we reach the surface.” looking at Varda trying hard not to think if….“Our orders are irrelevant!” Sorvani calls out. “We have no idea what lies beyond that door, other than probably a bunch of goblins judging by all the bodies. The people who gave those orders do not know that the lookout is a trap for large group. We need to get out of here and report back what this outpost really is. Before anyone else suffers our fate.”
As the gnome and halfling step forward a slight sigh of relief comes to her. Atleast they are not ghouls. But then the dwarf steps forward and Kaylessa looks to Sorvani. The mage has been on need a dwarf for longer then she would like to have heard but in the end she slowly came around to his reasoning.
Kaylessa shakes her head at the remarks of the large fighter. With a serene smirk, “Sometimes speed with save you, though more often then not your wit wins the day, Kendall.”“That thing reminds of a bear in the woods,” Kendell offers with his country twang. “When running from a bear, you don't have to be the fastest, just not the slowest.”
“It is worth a try. We will not last much more on water alone. Perhaps there maybe rations below but I do not wish to be Ghoul food….”“I could try to fish in that stream again,” Kendell offers. “Water that clean should have some fish in it.”
“And you have. What is left of us.” she says stoicly as the metallic his of her weapons can be heard being put back in their sheaths. “Last survivor? Did they fall to the ghouls below?” she asks curiously as she takes an offered ration.Introductions are soon made Kaylessa listens as the others are forthcoming perhaps more than others.
Butternut steps into the light next to Vernar so they can see her better. "We are Chimera Squad, and were sent to find you. My name is Butternut, last survivor of Clan Foxburr." She will leave it to the others to introduce themselves as they see fit.
“The first of many I hope good dwarf.” She says as she opens some dried fruit and nuts and begins to snack upon it. Her eyes looking at the gnome in turn then back to the dwarf as he motions back to the others."That be t' first time I was ev'r greeted so warmly," Vernar replies, curious as to why they would be so desperate for a dwarf among them. However, first things first.
Kaylessa listens as Varda speaks to the gnome."Huh?" Caught off guard, Ren looks around briefly. Hmmm....quite an interesting quandry."
Kaylessa’s brow furls as she hears his comments. “A lost soul than? Several moments later the sound of armor sounding off the rock face can be heard. Figures can be seen coming forward in the low light steadily growing clearer. Humans and another halfling. A dark haired human in chainmail comes forward and speaks:
“Sadly no. We lost three of our team one within moments of falling in that infernal trap.” She says with a bit of disgust that she wasn’t able to see the trap. Whomever did so with great care and planning.examining each of new arrivals Lucyus, notices that there are no holy symbols among them and he cannot help but to ask. “Is it safe to assume that there is none among you that followed the calling of their patrons. Perhaps faith is needed as well?”
“Forgive me, I did not introduce myself. I am Lucyus of Heironeous."
