Operation: Graystone #4

April 12th, CR 569

While trying to reach the Eagle's Nest observation outpost, Wyvern Squad unwittingly fell into a trap that sent them down into the depths of the mountain and into a seeming maze of tunnels. They landed in rancid water that used to hold metal spikes to impale its victims on, but had rusted away with the passing centuries. Wyvern Squad now tries to find their way out of this place.

The gelatinous cube is left behind to digest its already scooped up victims and to feed on the moss on the lower part of the cavern walls. A new tunnel is taken and it eventually leads to another intersection. One fork leads back to the left and some wonder if it connects to the passageway you left the gelatinous cube in. The underground sounds of water dripping and the chitterings of rats is a constant companion.

It is believed that Chimera Squad fell into this same trap days ago and a group of goblins before that. Bodies of goblins and a half-elf were found seem to support this theory. So somewhere out there in the dark there might be more allies and enemies, along whatever else calls this place home, for Wyvern Squad.

Wyvern Squad slowly moves along with eyes forward and backwards to make sure nothing sneaks up on them. As the group gets closer to the up coming intersection new noises are heard. It takes a moment to realize that this sound of someone or something eating! It seems to be coming from the small cavern up ahead.

As the intersection is reached, Ren looks to the right and seems the natural tunnel lead off into darkness. Small patches of something glistening on the ground is noted among the earth and stone. Those who look to the left see another natural passageway that curves back to the left. There are even more patches of glistening substance on the floor and the walls heading off in that direction.

As the group is considering what to do next, Wimzy lets out a shriek surprising everyone! “UNDEAD!”, the diminutive Priestess of Azrella unleashes. With that Wimzy dashes towards the small cavern.

As she gets closer, and those with her, the right hand side of the cavern comes into view. A trio of beings are hunched over what looks to be a body. They are feasting on the remains! They turn to face the group to reveal a horrible visage. They superficially look human, but clearly are not. Hunks of flesh are being chewed and some of it is on their faces. Their skin nearly bluish in color and their teeth are long and sharp!

“Ghouls!” Wimzy cries out once more as she advances to attack the undead without any weapons!

The “u” is the location of the undead. The group is assumed to be in the area of the intersection and can see down both passageways and into the cavern.

Erisciana -

The forward scouts indicate that another intersection has been reached. Erisci cannot see it until they are close enough for Lucyus' torch to illuminate the area. The priestess looks off to the left but the feeble torch doesn't show much to her. Sight being mostly denied her, she tries to focus on her other senses. Over the sound of dripping water and chittering rats it sounds like voracious eating up ahead!

Before it can be mentioned by her or anyone, the halfling priestess, Wimzy, shrieks out a warning. As the group is considering what to do next, Wimzy lets out a shriek surprising everyone! “UNDEAD!” the diminutive Priestess of Azrella unleashes. With that Wimzy dashes towards the small cavern.

Erisciana raises one eyebrow behind her battlemask at the sight of the tiny halfling rushing forward to confront the monsters with neither arms nor armor. Erisci had studied some information about the deity Azrella and had learned that undead were her primary adversary. Still, this seemed most unadvised!

Erisci moves forward, expecting Lucyus to be on the fore of any fighting and so positions herself behind him and to the side, her shield up and mace at the ready. The sight confronting the Wyverns was gruesome and grisly, three horrific monsters hunched over a dead body, bits of flesh hanging from their jagged teeth and blood smeared across their faces and coating their clawed hands. The priestess wrinkled her nose at the evil creatures in disgust. She waited to see how the main fighters fared, ready to help dispatch any of the wounded ghouls from her second rank position.

Butternut:
Erisciana wrote:"Perhaps. At any rate it has not seemed to perceive us, if it can even do so beyond touch. A rearguard is vital in this place, especially as we have more and more tunnels, intersections and passages behind us," the priestess agrees.
Butternut nods. "Better cautious and safe than careless and regretting it, as my grandmammy used to say..." Memories of her deceased family well up and Butternut feels a heaviness in her heart that she has tried so hard to put behind her.
Vernar wrote:"I, too am curious 'bout the cavern," Vernar replies, "but I have no desire t' get trapped. We need t' be markin' the walls. Somethin' simple t' make sure we stop from runnin' 'round the same area."
"We could use thief-sign," Butternut suggests, "though not all of us would know how to read it."
Lucyus wrote:“Perhaps we can mark the cavern wall with a dagger scratches?"
Butternut thinks for a second. "Perhaps scratch in an arrow showing which way we were moving when we passed? That seems pretty simple to do and easy to understand, in case one of the lost Chimera Squad members happens upon them."

Moving up to the front, Butternut notes odd glistening patches on the floor and walls. Bending down for a closer look, something about it reminds her of the strange creature they just left behind. She points it out to Vernar, who is standing in the intersection looking down the right-hand passage. "See these spots, I think that creature we just encountered - or one like it - passed this way before.

Ren soon joins then in the intersection. "Ren, what do you see in the cavern from here?" Butternut asks, pointing.

Before he can respond, Wimzy suddenly yells out something about undead and charges into the room! "Wimzy! Wait!" Butternut exclaims, but her fellow halfling seems beyond hearing. Readying her crossbow as she goes, Butternut glides into the small cavern, following the wall to the left to stay as far from whatever Wimzy is after as she can. She sees three strange human-like creatures sating themselves on the gore from some dead body. The scent of something as foul as the water they fell into wafts past her nose and she scrunches up her face and spits. "Gyah!"

Given a clean shot, she will fire at one of the creatures.

"Yes," Vernar agrees, "t'is more what I was thinkin'."

Before the conversation can go any further, Wimzy alerts everyone to her discovery. Undead, more specifically ghouls, lie in the cavern before the group. As some begin to follow Wimzy in after her charge, Vernar gets his axe and sword ready. He will move to a position to protect those using missile weapons. Should one of these foul creatures get into range, he will strike with both weapons.

Seeing the others move through the caverns their forms barely seen in the out reaches of the torch, Lucyus makes his way forward while occasionally looking behind him. Within several minutes, Wimzy calls of undead and rushes forward into the cavern.

He hears voices of the others calling for Wimzy to wait. And it begins… Not fully knowing what lies before him, Lucyus moves forward into the cavern.

Seeing the ghouls, Lucyus takes a deep breath as the sight is greatly unsettling, their appearance causing a chill to go down his spine. Within his helm, his eyes narrow as he steels himself for the coming fight. If possible he will move by Wimzy’s right flank and bring his axe to bare, using the torch to deflect if he is able.

Post Continued:

As Wyvern Squad continues to search for a way out of these tunnels, they have discovered a small cave that is the home to several ghouls! Wimzy detected the presence of the undead and immediately rushed to attack! Most of the group follows and battle is quickly joined!

The ghouls are so engrossed in their meal that they pay the group little heed until Wimzy is right on top of them! The halfling Priestess of Azrella lets out an almost guttural growl as a bluish energy gathers about her hands. Wimzy winds up and punches the closest ghoul right in the face as it turns back to look at her. To the immense surprise of the ghoul and those who can see clearly enough, Wimzy's fist erupts out of the back of the ghoul's head and is now covered in brain guts! The ghoul twitches a few times and then falls to the cavern floor.

Wimzy pulls her fist free and uses it to give a backhanded slap to the next ghoul, but the attack only does minor damage. Butternut lines up a crossbow shot at that same ghoul, but misses the mark as the ghoul lunges at Wimzy! It tries to claw the priestess, but she scrambles back to avoid the attacks! Lucyus rushes to Wimzy's aid and buries his axe in the ghoul's back, shattering its spine! The foul undead falls to the cavern floor and doesn't move after that.

Vernar goes after the last ghoul and strikes with both his hand axe and short sword. The ghoul twitches unnaturally from the two weapons buried into its sides a few times and then falls to the floor when the weapons are removed. Just like that, the threat of the ghouls is violently dealt with!

As the group gathers their breath, some look around. This cave seems to have been a nest for these ghouls. Bones and other litter cover the floor of the cave. Some of the litter looks like old, broken gear. Buckles left from rotted away belts, broken pieces of armor and shields, smashed weapons and the like can be easily spotted without sorting through the trash. Some copper coins are noted on the floor here and there.

GM Notes:

For the curious, Wimzy scored a critical hit on her brain punch! This can happen when certain conditions are met. It starts with you having to roll a natural 18, 19 or 20 on the attack die and hit your target by 6 places or better. Such attacks automatically do double damage and can have more gruesome effects.

Wyvern Squad survived its first battle! Congratulations!

As an aside, I have mentioned this to a few players but not everyone as of yet. Should your character perish in the game, I will let that player make a new character and that character can start out with half the earned experience of the previous character. So for example, if character dies and has 2000 xps earned, they can make a new character with 1000 xp to spend on classes. They might be able to buy gear beyond what a starting character would be able to as well.

Now what?

Erisciana -

The fighting is over almost before it begins. Attention entirely on their meal, the ghouls barely put up a defense. Wimzy kills one, in a most disgusting manner, while Lucyus and Vernar dispatch the other two. Erisci had moved up along with the paladin and stood at his flank, but her support was not needed.

"That was easier than expected," the priestess muses. She silently hopes that does not make the group overconfident. Given their circumstances, they need to remain careful.

She takes a look at what the ghouls were feeding on.

Butternut nods, satisfied that Vernar liked her idea.

Seeing Wimzy's fist burst out of the back of the ghoul's head causes Butternut's stomach to lurch. She tries to focus on the next target, but she doesn't seem to be able to get that image out of her head. Unsurprisingly, her quarrel flies wide of the target. Fortunately, the others finish off the two remaining ghouls in no time.

Rather than get any closer to the remains right now, Butternut follows the wall around to her left. She'll make a full circuit of this small cavern, making sure that nothing is out of place and no hidden entrances appear.

Having been absorbed in his curiosity and inspecting the southern fork of the intersection, Ren is a little surprised by Wimzy's brief exclamation. Turning to see her single-mindedly huff into the alcove he retreats, readying his weapons, and as he comes to the mouth of the alcove is met by a bright flash of blue and then the image of a diminutive halfling with her fist through what was a ghoul's skull as the others rush to her aid. When Vernar lifts his axe from the body of the final ghoul Ren has put his weapons back to his side and with a low whistle, and a slow-muffled clap "Well done, one and all. But mostly the one! Bards could write tales of such a mighty blow, Wimzy."

Serving as a lookout, Ren intently watches the tunnels in each direction as the rest of the group meanders about the cavern and performs their inspection; only wandering at most a few feet in either direction to see around the bends a tiny bit.

Vernar -

As Vernar moves up with the others, his eyes gaze upon these undead creatures. Truly vile, he thinks in disgust. Illuminated in blue light thanks to Wimzy's faith, the ghouls begin to fall before they even realize what is transpiring.
Vernar goes after the last ghoul and strikes with both his hand axe and short sword. The ghoul twitches unnaturally from the two weapons buried into its sides a few times and then falls to the floor when the weapons are removed.
Both his weapons bury themselves deep into his foe, and cause the unnatural thing to die. Looking around, Vernar sees no other threat. Still, he doesn't want to linger too long should something else have heard their battle, as brief as it was.

"Keep an eye out t' make sure nothin' comes t' see what the commotion was 'bout," Verner says to those of his companions still near the cavern entrance. Butternut is already searching the cavern, so he will join her efforts, beginning at the other side. He will check the floor, walls, and ceiling to see if anything seems out of place or is otherwise hidden.

Lucyus

Readying his axe and torch, Lucyus moves forward as Wimzy dispatches the first of their foes with a blue punch to the face. He has heard of her patron’s followers' dislike of undead but never witnessed it first-hand. Shifting his gaze to one of the creatures, Lucyus lets out a battle cry as he brings his axe to bear.

His axe bites deep into the creature’s back and it goes down and does not stir. He raises his torch as the fighting seems to be over. Seeing the gore upon his axe he quickly wipes it off with some rags. “Is everyone okay? What were those things?”

Hearing Vernar, Lucyus will say in reply, “I'll check if there is anything here of use.” Lucyus will see if there is any parchment or anything that distinguishes their victim. Afterward he will silently pray for the unfortunate soul that met their demise by these creatures.

In spectacular fashion, Wimzy took out one of the ghouls with a single punch! Once the final ghoul goes down, Wimzy settles down from her 'berserker rage'. “EWWW!” she lets out as she tries to clean the goo from her hand.
Butternut wrote:"Was it?" Butternut asks, wondering. "I'm not familiar with whatever these creatures are, so I had no idea what to expect. Are they pretty dangerous, then?"
Lucyus wrote:“Is everyone okay? What were those things?”
“Lesser undead,” Wimzy says as she wipes her hand clean. “Foul creatures that feed on the flesh of the living. They can paralyze their victims with just a touch. I guess these things did all the eating of the bodies we had found so far. Their bodies need to be burned. Help me, please.”
Ren wrote:When Vernar lifts his axe from the body of the final ghoul Ren has put his weapons back to his side and with a low whistle, and a slow-muffled clap "Well done, one and all. But mostly the one! Bards could write tales of such a mighty blow, Wimzy."
“Undead are an abomination that must be destroyed,” Wimzy states. “The Blue Lady gives me the power to do that! Is anyone hurt?”

Erisciana and Lucyus get closer to the ghoul's meal. The body is so heavily eaten that its hard to tell its race or gender. It could have been a small human or maybe a half-elf. What clothes the body was wearing were shredded, although some pieces could be used to augment the torches.

Speaking of the torch, its light flickers and starts to dim. It's running out of fuel and will go out in a few minutes. Another torch will need to be lit before that time.

Butternut and Vernar inspect the cave which the ghouls used as a lair. Garbage and bones cover the floor. Coins are noted here and there. Most of the debris is damaged gear. Buckles from broken belts, chain links from shredded chain mail armor and so on.

Butternut circles the walls to make sure that there are no other ways in or out of this cave. None are noted. While making her circuit, Butternut does step on something that seems out of place. Looking down she spots what looks like a coin purse among the garbage.

Vernar starts at the other side of the cave and makes his own circuit. He doesn't find anything either. Along the way he inadvertently kicks something metallic. Looking down he can see a dirty short sword laying amongst the trash and muck.

Watch is kept on the other tunnels passing this cave, but no new threats are noted. The passageway that went to the left as you approached this intersection seems to split into two openings. Its too far away to tell if this is another cave or a new tunnel. The right hand tunnel just goes away into darkness.

A gooey glistening substance is noted on the tunnel's floor and lower walls. It gets more intense as it moves away to your left and lessens to the right.

The battle does not seem to have attracted any unwanted attention.

While checking the cavern, Vernar overhears the need to burn the bodies. He offers a flask of lamp oil should it be needed. Otherwise, he checks out the cavern, but there just isn't much to get excited over, until his foot catches something.
Vernar starts at the other side of the cave and makes his own circuit. He doesn't find anything either. Along the way he inadvertently kicks something metallic. Looking down he can see a dirty short sword laying amongst the trash and muck.
The dwarf will pick up the weapon and look it over. While not a weaponsmith, he will compare the blade to his own steel. Besides dirt, Vernar will see if it is in bad shape. If it is serviceable, then he will store it. Nothing wrong with a good backup blade, he muses while he examines it.

Once the bodies are disposed of and a new torch is lit, Vernar will see how everyone is faring. He will take a small swig of his water, but is not yet hungry. "Rest up fer a minute," he says while securing his waterskin back into his pack. "We shouldn't linger long, but fer now it seems we 'r safe enough."

“I did not recall of Heironous’ teachings regarding these creatures. It is good that we were able to attack them when they were unaware. I would not wish to be paralyzed and devoured in the end, nor would I wish it on anyone.”

Taking a step forward and kneeling by the remains, Lucyus says a silent pray for them as his torch begins to flicker. Lucyus will take another torch out and begin lighting it with the lit torch. “Would you mind holding this for a moment? He offers the newly lit torch to Erisciana as the other begins to flicker. He begins dragging the bodies and remains together and gathering up scraps of cloth for the torches.

Once they are together he will take Vernar’s offered oil and proceed to begin the fire.
“Undead are an abomination that must be destroyed,” Wimzy states. “The Blue Lady gives me the power to do that! Is anyone hurt?”
“I am no worse for wear.” Raising the face plate of his helm, “Can everyone please sound off? It is hard to see outside the torch light.”
A gooey glistening substance is noted on the tunnels' floor and lower walls. It gets more intense as it moves away to your left and lessens to the right.
“Could this be from the creature we saw before?” pointing to the glistening substance.

Seeing Vernar take a sip of water, "Is that water safe? I am to drink from my skins." Lucyus says with some concern. "I think we might be able to mark our way with ash from the torch. If the ash holds true, we will know of our passing."

Butternut glances back over her shoulder in the direction of the gnome. 'Not sure I'll ever understand his obsession with fame and showmanship,' she thinks, shaking her head bemusedly before turning back to her search of the cavern.
Vernar wrote:"Keep an eye out t' make sure nothin' comes t' see what the commotion was 'bout," Verner says to those of his companions still near the cavern entrance.
Vernar's words should be sufficient to keep them from being caught unprepared while they finish up here. Since they aren't meant for her, Butternut pays them little heed.
Wimzy wrote:“Lesser undead,” Wimzy says as she wipes her hand clean. “Foul creatures that feed on the flesh of the living. They can paralyze their victims with just a touch. I guess these things did all the eating of the bodies we had found so far. Their bodies need to be burned. Help me, please.”
Butternut listens in as she conducts her search, wanting to better understand what they just faced. Things could have gone much worse if any of them had been touched by one. Lucyus soon gives voice to her thoughts.
Wimzy wrote:“Undead are an abomination that must be destroyed,” Wimzy states. “The Blue Lady gives me the power to do that! Is anyone hurt?”
Lucyus wrote:“I am no worse for wear.” Rising the face plate of his helm, “Can everyone please sound off? It is hard to see outside the torch light.”
Butternut cannot argue with the other halfling's assertion, though she doesn't feel it as personally as Wimzy seems to. "I'm fine," she calls back in confirmation.

An odd shifting beneath her foot causes Butternut to look down. Squatting for a better look, she sees what appears to be a coin purse. Reaching down, she picks it up and bounces it in her hand a little to see if it sounds like coins, or is perhaps filled with something else entirely. She then continues with her search to see if she encounters anything else unexpected.

It is not long before she meets up with Vernar. He is inspecting a short sword that she suspects was just found. "What you got there, Vernar?" she asks, then holds out the coin purse. "I found this pouch over yonder."
Vernar wrote:Once the bodies are disposed of and a new torch is lit, Vernar will see how everyone is faring. He will take a small swig of his water, but is not yet hungry. The halfling tunnelrat gladly finds a spot she seat herself. She fishes around in her bags, but cannot find anything that is likely edible. Hopefully the priestly types will resolve that problem in the morning, but Butternut is not looking forward to having nothing to eat until then.

Erisciana -

The ghouls are killed and Vernar and Lucyus set about to burn the remains. Wimzy explains a bit more about the ghouls and Erisci remembers reading the part about them causing paralysis. Apparently those suspicions were true. The body that the ghouls were eating is unfortunately too far savaged to tell much about its race or gender. An unfortunate ending even for a goblin to have been paralyzed and eaten alive, she think morbidly.

"Keep an eye out t' make sure nothin' comes t' see what the commotion was 'bout," Verner says to those of his companions still near the cavern entrance.

The priestess casts a glance back toward the tunnel opening, as Ren moves further out into the cave entrance, but she does not leave the immediate area of Lucyus' torch. A moment later the torch starts to dim and flicker as though it has spent itself.

Erisci loops the leather thong on the enter of her mace to her belt and accepts the new torch. While curious to explore, she will not step far away as Lucyus needs the light as well to finish his task. She does not sound off as he obviously knows she is there, having just handed her the torch.

Seeing Vernar take a sip from his wineskin, Erisciana regrets leaving her food and water with her horse. She certainly did not expect to be thrust into a dire situation as this. With Ishtar's help she would manage to defeat her growing thirst until she was able to pray for a spell to purify food and water here. "While we may escape these tunnels at any turn or twist, we may also want to have a contingency plan for spending the night here. At least keep in mind of a reasonably safe place if we are unable to exit these charming halls before long."

Discussion continues on the necessity of marking their path, which in this winding maze, is nearly vital as more and more branches present themselves. Erisci's memory and ability to visualize their path is strong and she is confident of keeping track mentally of their position. But marking the tunnels would be even better indicator and guarantee they did not backtrack.

"I think we might be able to mark our way with ash from the torch. If the ash holds true, we will know of our passing."

Butternut looks up at the large warrior. "That jelly-glob creature is likely to wipe the ash right off the walls. Etching with a dagger or something of the sort might last longer."

"I would agree, Butternut," the priestess offers. "It seemed to fill the corridor completely and if it can decompose bodies, the gel of its form would not likely leave simple ash marks intact."

Finally the group has resolved their various tasks in the ghoul's cave.

"So, which way should we head once we're done here?" Butternut says to Vernar. "I'm still thinking we should verify that the northerly passage links up with the tunnel that the jelly-thing came out of."

"There are two different passages which head to the rightmost direction as we departed the pool, and possibly only one to the left. We may have more options going to the right, plus the gelatinous blob has already passed the left way and so exploring it is not impeded by the blob. However, if the two passages to the left join, the limited options there may be quickly explored." She shrugs, not suggesting an option and looks to Vernar and Lucyus.

Post Continued:

With Wimzy leading the way, the ghouls have been defeated. They are tossed into a pile, along with the victim they were chewing on. Oil is applied curtsy of Vernar and then lit with the dying torch. Lucyus lights a fresh torch and hands it to Erisciana.

“My faith believes that the body is merely a vessel to hold our soul while alive,” Wimzy says after administering last rites. “Upon death, the soul is free to move to the afterlife. What is left behind is just a lifeless shell. Cremating the remains is our way and it prevents further desecration from evil necromancers.”

Fueled by the oil, the fire soon engulfs the bodies and it brightly illuminates the area. The smell is horrific, but after the dunking in the rancid water its only by a matter of a few degrees. Wyvern Squad takes the time to catch their breath and decide what to do next.

While inspecting the cave, Vernar kicks something underfoot and finds it to be a much covered short sword. A quick test shows the blade to still be sharp. It just needs to be cleaned up is all.

Water is tentatively examined from your skins and it is found to be okay to drink. The skins are water tight to keep water in, so it stands to reason that they also keep water out as well. The water is untainted.

Butternut found a small coin purse while also searching the cavern. Opening it up, she finds a handful of platinum coins. Maybe as many as two dozen or so. Still other coins are noted here and there on the trash and muck covered floor.

Talk then turns to how to proceed next. The idea of leaving markers behind so that you can tell where you have been in this maze of tunnels. The best notion seems to be using a dagger or similar object to scratch marks into the passages walls.

Not long after that, Ren notes something out in the tunnels. A mark has already been scratched into the side of the tunnel on the right hand side of the opening into the ghoul cave! It wasn't noticed when before to due to Wimzy's sudden charge. It points down the right hand passage, away from the ghoul cave. The mark is located about five feet high on the natural wall.

GM Notes:

As noted above, your water is safe to drink. Torches have been changed. Time wise, its about 6:30 in the evening. At this point, the group has been up over 12 hours and it's been over 6 hours since lunch.

The mark found points down the southern passageway as shown on the map earlier in the thread.

Now what?

As the others mill about the alcove, Ren takes this time as a nice break from the tension and anxiety of the previous hours. After a short time has passed, and it is fairly apparent that no new foes will be venturing into their hollow, Ren finally feels a little more at ease though certainly not comfortable. As part of that, a wave of lethargy washes over him as the excitement takes its toll. A whole lot of internal build-up, and a whole lot of inaction has made for a precarious predicament as the sense for danger is on high but there is nothing to relieve the mental pressure. Slowly focusing his attention back towards the cavern entrance, Ren, a little lost in thought, catches a glimpse of something he hadn't noticed before on the wall.
Butternut:
"What you got there, Vernar?" she asks, then holds out the coin purse. "I found this pouch over yonder."
Overhearing Butternut, Ren can't help but pipe up, "'Tis a lucrative day indeed, should we survive it. I, for one, knowing that we may run into Wyvern squad, would say we divvy up the coin before having to part with a portion of our share with them. I have no qualms with rescuing them, but it is partially their fault we are here."

Sometimes, when the mind isn't looking for anything at all, it will notice what was missing. The etching of an arrow into the right side of the opening, previously unseen, suddenly becomes apparent after a quick double-take.
Erisciana:
There are two different passages which head to the rightmost direction as we departed the pool, and possibly only one to the left. We may have more options going to the right, plus the gelatinous blob has already passed the left way and so exploring it is not impeded by the blob. However, if the two passages to the left join, the limited options there may be quickly explored.
"Normally, I'd agree but look at this!" Ren draws attention to the marking on the wall. Meanwhile he is also inspecting the marking closely to determine whether there are any noticeable traces of goblin writing. "This has to be Wyvern squad, and if it is maybe we could find what remains of them quickly with these markings. I know I for one am starting to feel the fatigue of today's events and am not sure how much longer we will reliably be able to fight. Whatever we decide, it should be doable in a short period, and the trail to the left may not be so quickly explored as there appears to be another split further up." Ren then continues to search the entrance carefully for any other marks which may indicate they returned this direction.

Vernar -
While inspecting the cave, Vernar kicks something underfoot and finds it to be a much covered short sword. A quick test shows the blade to still be sharp. It just needs to be cleaned up is all.

It is not long before she [Butternut] meets up with Vernar. He is inspecting a short sword that she suspects was just found. "What you got there, Vernar?" she asks, then holds out the coin purse. "I found this pouch over yonder."
"A pretty decent blade," Vernar reveals, pleased by its quality. "Could be good t' have jus' in case."

When Butternut shows him the small pouch and its platinum contents, Vernar lets out a low whistle. "Don' see many o' them too often," he comments.
Seeing Vernar take a sip of water, "Is that water safe? I am to drink from my skins." Lucyus says with some concern.
Warm, yet refreshing and no pungent taste except for what one would expect from having been stored inside of a skin, Vernar nods and wipes his mouth. "Aye, 't is. Although I would not recommend drinking the water still inside my boot," he says the last with a twinkle in his eye and a bit of mirth.

As the group takes a brief rest and discusses options, Ren notices something on the wall that we missed when the group charged into this little cavern. There is a marking on the wall much like Vernar suggested be done earlier. Ren is convinced that it could only be Wyvern squadron.

"I am curious if that passageway loops back 'round to our gelatinous friend, but I don' want t' spend much time on it," Vernar offers. "A quick peek maybe, then follow this new clue," the dwarf adds, indicating the mark Ren discovered. "We may be close t' the end o' here, but if not, then we must consider a lengthier break as Erisciana pointed out."

The bodies are put to the torch, generating a horrid stench, though not so much worse than the putrid water back in the first cave. The Azrellan priestess provides last rites, and relates the viewpoint of her goddess on the matter. "While Arvoreen doesn't give much thought to what happens beyond death, anything that reduces the likelihood of a future threat is to be pursued."
Erisciana wrote:Seeing Vernar take a sip from his wineskin, Erisciana regrets leaving her food and water with her horse. She certainly did not expect to be thrust into a dire situation as this. "While we may escape these tunnels at any turn or twist, we may also want to have a contingency plan for spending the night here. At least keep in mind of a reasonably safe place if we are unable to exit these charming halls before long."
"That's a good point," Butternut acknowledges as she returns from her search. "If we do end up having to camp down here, a cave like this with only one entrance would be a good, easily-defensible choice." She takes note of Vernar tasting his water, and soon follows suit. While it won't allay her hunger, she is happy to be able to rinse the taste of the earlier fouled water from her mouth and ease her growing thirst. As he said, it seems not to be any worse for the dunking they took earlier.
Erisciana wrote:"I would agree, Butternut," the priestess offers. "It seemed to fill the corridor completely and if it can decompose bodies, the gel of its form would not likely leave simple ash marks intact."
Butternut nods as Erisciana gives voice to her concurring opinion. Whatever else she may be, this priestess from the strange land seems to have good sense.
Vernar wrote:"A pretty decent blade," Vernar reveals, pleased by its quality. "Could be good t' have jus' in case."
Butternut leans forward to give the short sword a look. "Yup, looks to be in fair shape. Always good to have a few spare weapons in a place like this."
Ren wrote:Overhearing Butternut, Ren can't help but pipe up, "'Tis a lucrative day indeed, should we survive it. Butternut shakes her head, hearing the gnome's preoccupation with money. "Sure, it's a bit of coin," she replies with a shrug, "but it may need to go to cover expenses before we're done."
Erisciana wrote:"There are two different passages which head to the rightmost direction as we departed the pool, and possibly only one to the left. "I agree south is probably our better choice, though it is hard to tell if the marking is recent or much older. However, as Vernar said, a quick look to the north seems like a good idea so that we can confirm our options. Perhaps a few of us go have a look, while the rest stay here and guard the intersection? Might also be good to have someone check to see if the jelly-blob is coming this way."

Butternut looks up at the large warrior. "That jelly-glob creature is likely to wipe the ash right off the walls. Etching with a dagger or something of the sort might last longer."
“Along with anything else we do.” Then a thought comes to mind regarding the creature as well as sleeping arrangements. “Could the creature move over elevated stone? If there are decent size stones we might be able to bar the ghoul alcove from it.”
Overhearing Butternut, Ren can't help but pipe up, "'Tis a lucrative day indeed, should we survive it. I, for one, knowing that we may run into Wyvern squad, would say we divvy up the coin before having to part with a portion of our share with them. “Dispersing the treasure that we find is the least of our worries, my little friend. If it can be agreed upon I would put forth that we pool what we find. Weapons and armor would go to who needs it most and makes the unit strongest.

“I would have to agree. If we do have to spend the night here, I feel this would be a good place to defend ourselves for the night. He then realizes he does have his own waterskin on him, his extra rations upon his horse.
Lucyus chuckles and shakes his head at the dwarf. “I think anyone would pass on that my friend,” as He feels for it and uncaps it, taking a tentative sip. Once he sees it is safe he takes a larger drink. He looks to Ericiana and offers the wineskin to her.

Discussions arise as to which way they should go from here and Lucyus is somewhat skeptical of moving forward but does not show it. “If we go to the right it is possible we run into our gelatinous friend. If we go left where the substance is stronger then we may be clear of it, as it has passed here recently. I believe we should move to the left but be ready to return here for the night. What do you say?’” he asks the others.

Erisciana -

Butternut nods as Erisciana gives voice to her concurring opinion. Erisciana smiles back at the halfling's acknowledgement.

Then a thought comes to mind regarding the creature as well as sleeping arrangements. “Could the creature move over elevated stone? If there are decent size stones we might be able to bar the ghoul alcove from it.”

"While I doubt any of us are experts on the anatomy and actions of that gelatinous blob, it seems likely it can alter its shape to fit various openings. I would be considered we would need a substantial wall to effectively block it for certain. That said, if the glistening goo on the ground in the tunnel outside indicates the passage of that glob creature, then it doesn't appear to have entered this cavern which could make it safe for a recovery period."

“Dispersing the treasure that we find is the least of our worries, my little friend. If it can be agreed upon I would put forth that we pool what we find. Weapons and armor would go to who needs it most and makes the unit strongest."

"Possibly it belongs to one of Chimera squad's number," the priestess offers. "Or perhaps it is spoils from the goblins. In any case, it is ours now. Perhaps we make plans to disperse some and pool the rest? That way we individually earn some treasure and we also enhance the group's effectiveness. In my country, as Butternut found the goods, they would technically belong to her alone."

Lucyus chuckles and shakes his head at the dwarf. “I think anyone would pass on that my friend,” as he feels for his wineskin and uncaps it, taking a tentative sip. Once he sees it is safe he takes a larger drink. He looks to Ericiana and offers the wineskin to her.

"Much obliged," Erisciana will say, taking the water in her hands. She takes two short drinks from the wineskin, which does much to alleviate her thirst. Handing it back to the paladin, she will add, "Unfortunately I left my water and rations on my horse. Foolishly thinking this would be a reasonable hike to the top and then easily recovered." She makes a sheepish face for a moment, but then it is back to the matter at hand.

There is much discussion of the path forward. Ren points out a marking on the way, pointing south. It appears to be etched in, much like they had discussed. "I agree south is probably our better choice, though it is hard to tell if the marking is recent or much older. Might also be good to have someone check to see if the jelly-blob is coming this way."

"He makes several good points. Knowing where that blob is and how far it has moved is a reasonable suggestion. If the scouts go that way they are coming up behind the blob and if anything is found in the passage, then the rest of us are not far."

Post Continued:

Wyvern Squad continues to search for a way out of this seeming maze of caves. A group of goblins and Chimera Squad seem to have passed this way before, as bodies of both have been found so far. Undead ghouls were discovered and quickly destroyed. Their bodies and their most recent victim are covered with oil and set ablaze. The light brightens the area around the cave the Wyvern Squad pauses to catch their breath.

While resting, Ren spots a crudely drawn arrow on the passageway wall point down the right hand tunnel as you approached the ghoul cave. Talk of using this cave as place to rest for the evening is discussed, but Vernar wants to explore the immediate area before resting.

The scouts move up the left hand passage that seems to lead back to where you encountered the jelly-blob. Ren leads the way with Butternut and Vernar not far behind. The rest of the group remains near the the light of the burning bodies to guard the intersection.

The opening seen to the north noted earlier turns out to lead into yet another cave, this one many times bigger than the ghoul cave. The large cave seems to have seen recent use. There are several dead goblins scattered around the area. All them have been chewed on by the ghouls and their clothing is gone. What is most interesting is that a crude campfire had been built here using small stones and only ash and bones remains from whatever was burned. Numerous footprints can been seen in the dirt and places where bedrolls laid out can be seen by those trained to spot such details. You start to suspect that Chimera Squad used this cave at least for one night! Some trash and other bones are seen among the earth and rock floor.

Ren continues along the cavern and sure enough he spots the jelly-blob further up ahead slowly moving away. By now, the jelly-blob has reached the three way intersection and is now moving down the passage that leads to the stagnate pool of water you arrived in.

Vernar -

Everyone is starting to get tired, and even Vernar is feeling it. Still, he wants to confirm what they believe regarding the passageways and that they circle back to their starting point. Thankful for even the few minutes longer that the discussion carried on, Vernar stows the extra blade in his pack and moves into his position. With a nod once everyone is ready, we head out again.

It isn't long before another cavern is found, and after a quick search, it appears this one was used by the lost squad, as well as the gruesome end to more goblins. Ren moves further ahead and spots the shimmering of the gelatinous thing moving slowly away.

"Let's check this cavern," Vernar says once Ren returns. "If Chimera squad did rest here for t' night, they probably marched on well past where we fought t' ghouls. We all need rest an' so should pick t' better of spots."

Listening to Lucyus and Eri discuss the blob, Butternut thinks about its behavior. "The creature seemed rather mindless, so I suspect it either changes directions randomly, or it travels in a set route. It's hard to say which at this point. Either way, I wouldn't make any assumptions about what would block its passage. As long as we have someone on watch, I don't think it has much chance of catching us as long as there's room to go around it."

In my country, as Butternut found the goods, they would technically belong to her alone."
"I agree with Lucyus that we have more important things to worry about right now," Butternut says, stuffing the coin purse into the pouch on her belt. "We can figure it out when we settle in for the night - wherever that may be."
Lucyus wrote:“I would have to agree. If we do have to spend the night here, I feel this would be a good place to defend ourselves for the night. He then realizes he does have his own waterskin on him, his extra rations upon his horse.
Butternut is pleased to hear her fellow warrior thinking about practical defense. He may prove to be a good leader -- if they survive long enough.
Erisciana wrote:"He makes several good points. Knowing where that blob is and how far it has moved is a reasonable suggestion. If the scouts go that way they are coming up behind the blob and if anything is found in the passage, then the rest of us are not far."
Butternut smirks at being called 'he' by the foreign human woman. An amusing notion drifts through her mind in response, 'I know I'm not the most feminine type, but I've never been mistaken for a man before...'
Erisciana wrote:"As it was once spoken to me, knowledge is strength," the priestess comments.
"Never heard it put that way before," Butternut replies as she contemplates the idea, "but it makes a certain sense."

Moments later, she, Ren and Vernar head up the northern arm of the passage. Butternut takes her usual position a couple of steps behind the gnome and a bit to one side. They can still see some light from the fire when they reach the opening to another cavern, this one much larger than the one they just left. From the opening, Ren and Vernar can make out bodies of both goblins and more civilized beings.

At a gesture from Vernar, Ren moves further up the passage to verify the connecting path. Returning, he relates that he saw the blob-creature heading toward the pool they had fallen into as an introduction to these lower caves.
Vernar wrote:"Let's check this cavern," Vernar says once Ren returns. "If Chimera squad did rest here for t' night, they probably marched on well past where we fought t' ghouls. We all need rest an' so should pick t' better of spots."
"You two go ahead and search. I'll stay here and guard the entryway." Butternut does her best to melt into the shadows of the opening and listens carefully for any sound of movement or life from the hallway.

Butternut smirks at being called 'he' by the foreign human woman. An amusing notion drifts through her mind in response, 'I know I'm not the most feminine type, but I've never been mistaken for a man before...'

(Eep! I thought I was quoting Vernar since his name appeared in the quoted text. Pretty sure Eri knows the difference between male and female, even if the halfling has much smaller 'tracts of land'.)

"Those are very valid points. Which means that we need to ideally find a place to camp with a larger area. Even this small chamber may turn out to be deadly if the gelatinous blob wandered in while most of us were sleeping."

"As it was once spoken to me, knowledge is strength," the priestess comments.

"Never heard it put that way before," Butternut replies as she contemplates the idea, "but it makes a certain sense."

The priestess nods at her halfling companion in response. "Aegos, the high priest of the Temple of Ishtar, taught his disciples the difference between war and battle. A powerful orc may be a viscious warrior, raging and dangerous in battle, but if one knows his methods, his ways, he can be easily bested as a mere kitten. Of course, one must also know oneself and this is often the most difficult lesson."

The three scouts move out to check on the area north of the ghoul cave and quickly disappear from the light of the fire. She squints futilely into the darkness and then tries to listen for any sounds that might indicate trouble, but the scouts are soon out of earshot as well.

Small Update:

A larger cavern leading back to the jelly-blob has been discovered. Vernar and Ren move into the cave to take a better look around. This cave is much cleaner than the ghoul cave. Not as many bones and trash, so scouting doesn't take as much time.

The cave floor is mostly dirt here, so a clearer picture can been seen by those trained to know what to look for. There were four bedrolls laid out in the cavern. They were all in the southern portion of the cave. Their camp fire was place at the narrowest portion of the southern area, near the entrance. The ashes are now cold, so the fire went out many hours ago.

There is a great deal of blood near the cave entrance, but most of it seems to have been from the goblins judging by their wounds. After they were slain, the goblins were dragged deeper into the cave. Their clothing was used to help get a fire going and then later one of the goblins themselves was used as fuel. The goblins now show signs of being chewed on by the ghouls, but there isn't as much blood spread around suggesting that they were dead when dined upon.

Those back near the ghoul cave don't see or hear anything out of the ordinary.

Now what?

Vernar -

Vernar searches this cavern with Ren while Butternut opts to stand guard. There is little to find however, and after conferring with Ren about what likely happened, Vernar will move back out to where Butternut is and bring her up to speed.

"They were 'ere, but many hours before," he'll add at the last. "I doubt we 'r in shape t' catch them. This cavern is more roomy for us t' use."

Unless there are any objections, Vernar will return to the main group while Ren and Butternut keep watch. He will quickly let everyone know what they found and suggest they use that cavern to get some much needed sleep. The dwarf suggests a continuous watch, and he will volunteer to take the middle watch, allowing others to get uninterrupted sleep.

The dwarf suggests a continuous watch, and he will volunteer to take the middle watch, allowing others to get uninterrupted sleep.

"I agree that the larger cavern sounds much more safe, given the apparent nature of the gelatinous blob. Of course there are other creatures which could come upon our position."

Erisci will follow Vernar to the further cave. The apparent camp site for Chimera Squad is in the southern section of the cavern and this does seem the most defensible position given the distance from the opening. Assuming someone builds a fire in the previous location, the priestess will settle down near the wall. She thinks that the campsite further back in the room would be even more appropriate, but this is no time to be choosy.

"I think it was wise to rest now. We started several days behind Chimera Squad so we are not likely to catch up to their survivors quickly, but hopefully we can build upon whatever they learned and also possibly not need to face so many opponents. Hopefully we can catch up to them while survivors remain."

Erisci will remove her facemask and gloves and unbuckles her belt and sets them nearby. She will remove the armor pieces on her arms and sandals, making a small pile. Her shield is propped against the wall and her mace will be kept immediately nearby. Folding up her cloak makes a small pillow which is a minor form of comfort laying in the dirt.

"May Ishtar look upon our plight with favor and grant us an uninterrupted night," she says to the group.

She assumes that since she will be unable to see that she will not be on guard duty and as her abilities to purify their food in the morning requires a full night's rest, she will quickly attempt to get some sleep. After a few moments of reciting a few prayers of protection for her and her teammates, the priestess will do her best to drift off to sleep.

Lucyus
Knowing that Ersi has the torch, Lucyus stays within the radius of the torch. His axe is held loosely in his right hand and he adjusts his grip on his shield with the right.
He watches the scouts disappear from sight. For several long moments Lucyus stares into the dark awaiting sign. Soon enough he sees Vernar and the other return.
"I agree that the larger cavern sounds much more safe, given the apparent nature of the gelatinous blob. Of course there are other creatures which could come upon our position."
“I share your feelings, Priestess.”Lucyus says as he looks about sizing up the security of the cavern. He realizes that Ersi is correct in many ways but a larger area also means having more area to defend. If someone got behind him and the others they would surely be pressed.
Lucyus will gather up his gear and follow Vernar and Ersiciana to the next tavern where the others wait.
The Priestess speaks up-
"I think it was wise to rest now. We started several days behind Chimera Squad so we are not likely to catch up to their survivors quickly, but hopefully we can build upon whatever they learned and also possibly not need to face so many opponents. Hopefully we can catch up to them while survivors remain."
“I believe so as well. Seeing as we are going to rotate guards, I would like to take last shift. I would suggest taking my shield for the guards. If some creature comes for us strike the shield. The noise should wake us quicker, that is if it is needed.”
Lucyus sits and leans up against a wall near the torch light. He removes his helm places it by his side. His axe is close by his right hand. He prays to his patron for spells then begins to settle down for the night, before doing so he begins to work on a campfire as to not waste the torches. “Whom ever is on watch can you please see to the fire?”
Lucyus then begins to get ready to lay down for the night.

Post Continued:

April 12th, CR 569

Wyvern Squad has come across another, larger cavern. Signs seem to indicated that at least four members of Chimera Squad camped here, most likely a few days ago. Since this new cavern seems cleaner and easier to defend, it is decided to set up camp for the night.

Bedrolls are set up, but they are still damp from the earlier dunking. A fire is built of the evening, presumably using the goblin bodies as there isn't much else to use as fuel. A rotation of guards is set up for the evening.

“I'll also pray for a purify spell in the morning,” Wimzy speaks up. “Just in case Erisciana's spell isn't enough or another is needed later on. I'll also add a Light spell to help with seeing down here.”

Sleep comes easy for those not on guard duty. The long day's ride, the abrupt descent into this seeming maze of caverns and the long hours since you've last eaten just made everyone tired. For the guards, the hours seem to drag on. No noises out of the ordinary are heard during the night. Those who do look back towards the ghoul cave will see the fire burning there get dimmer until it finally goes out all together hours later. The embers still glow and provide a little illumination.

April 13th, CR 569

Morning, or what everyone believes to be morning finally arrives! Erisciana and Wimzy wake up feeling refreshed and start to pray to their patrons for new magics. Erisciana is surprised to discover that she can pray for more spells than before. She can even learn more mage spells.

After completing her devotions, Erisciana is ready to purify Wyvern's Squad water drenched food. All the food is placed in a central area so that the magic can affect it all. Erisciana casts the spell the water drenched and smelly food is changed into something that is less offensive and more visually pleasing. Wyvern Squad quickly chows down on the restored food, satisfying their hunger.

GM Notes:

Experience points have been handed out and are on the Roster's page in the private area. Let me know how you are going to spend your points. Both Flare and Wimzy are single classed characters, so their points have already been spent. Levels may be gained, as was the case with Erisciana. If you do gain a level I will add how many more CP's you have earned to buy more NWP's and WP's.

It's a new day, you've had plenty of rest and food to eat, but still no clear path out of these dark tunnels. Spell casters can change their spell lists for this new day in this post.

Now what?

Edited to Add: The previous game day has now been recapped in the Campaign History area of the forum.

Ren decides to take one of the last watches as he usually is up early preparing, and without quality bedding he is urged from rest after trying to force the last hour of sleep before waking and preparing his spells. Once everyone is roused and the food has been purified, it is with great relief that Ren devours some breakfast in hurried anticipation. Sleeping in the caves again is making him a little homesick and he doesn't need the distraction. Ren asks the party to wait just a brief moment, and travels towards the junction a little ways to take mental note of how far the living jelly may have progressed, and down which tunnel.

Refocusing on the task ahead, "We know this path loops back to our original entry point so there is no point in continuing back in that direction. I say we follow the arrows and work to complete our mission quickly. Having more numbers working to get out of here the safer we will be. While the need for caution shouldn't be wholly forgotten, with our minimal supply of food, finding the exit quickly might necessitate sacrificing some for time. I know I only have about 2 more days of food on my person, and we could be anywhere in these mountains."

Vernar -

It feels good to stretch out and get some sleep, which comes easy for Vernar. His watch passes quietly, and the fire continues to wain, but there is simply no fuel left to keep it going. The dwarf stays out of the light regardless, and the hours stretch on without any disturbances.

Finally, "morning" comes, and all of our soggy food is placed into a makeshift pile so that clerical magic can make it nourishing again. Vernar wolfs his down, realizing just how hungry he had become. He all but drains one of his water skins, but feels tremendously better afterwards.

"I 'ave a bit more than that," Vernar tells Ren regarding the food, and the dwarf will happily share with anyone should it come to that, "but I concur we shoul' eliminate wasteful steps. Followin' the arrows is the best option at the moment."

Vernar will wait to see if anyone offers a different suggestion, otherwise he will gather up his things and secure his pack. With sword and axe in hand, he will move into his position in the marching order once everyone is ready to go.

Lucyus
Waking up for the last shift, Lucyus prays to Heironous for his guidance and spells. Pushing his hair behind his ears, Lucyus looks around seeing the fire from the night before dying. He begins stretches and stands up. Gathering up his shield and axe he feels his stomach grumble but suppresses the gurgling as he walks up to those he is relieving asking if anything transpired.
Finding no immediate worries aside from the blob, not seeing and becoming ravenous, The Paladin ducks by the embers stroking them back to life. He takes a sip of his water and fumbles in his pack for a torch( hoping they aren’t still wet) . Taking his fire starter he will try to ignite the torch. The time passes slow as his eyes dart to the unfamiliar sounds about it even finding one of the others snoring or perhaps it isn’t.
As the others begin to wake, Lucyus greets them good morning. Placing his food and rations with the others, he waits to see when they are purified with the others.
"I 'ave a bit more than that," Vernar tells Ren regarding the food, and the dwarf will happily share with anyone should it come to that, "but I concur we shoul' eliminate wasteful steps. Followin' the arrows is the best option at the moment."
“ I would gather I have 9 days of rations. Thought they are dry. I am willing to share them with any here.” He says by way of torch light. Then let us begin this day and put this wretched place behind us. As I prayed to Hieronous this morning I thought of our predicament. I prayed for light. Once the torches are used up I will cast light upon my ax. It should give us a wide enough birth to help those that are less useful in the dark.” He says easily with a ghost of a smile.

Butternut:
Erisciana wrote:"Those are very valid points. Which means that we need to ideally find a place to camp with a larger area. Even this small chamber may turn out to be deadly if the gelatinous blob wandered in while most of us were sleeping."
"True, though at least this chamber has limited access. Still, you're right that it would be worth looking for a better option."
Erisciana wrote:The priestess nods at her halfling companion in response.
Erisciana's last comment brings a snort of amusement from the halfing warrior-mage. "That would be true enlightenment; I wonder if anyone ever becomes that enlightened..."

From her position at the mouth of the larger cave, Butternut can hear Vernar and Ren searching the larger cavern behind her. Though she keeps her attention sharp on the hallways before her, no dangers appear from that direction.
Vernar wrote:"They were 'ere, but many hours before," he'll add at the last. "I doubt we 'r in shape t' catch them. This cavern is more roomy for us t' use.
Butternut nods as Vernar fills her in. "Sounds like a good spot to spend the night. Should give us enough room to move around if the blob-creature comes in." She doesn't have any objections to Vernar fetching the rest of the group while she and Ren keep an eye out here.

===

Vernar soon returns with the rest of the squad.
Lucyus wrote:“I believe so as well. Seeing as we are going to rotate guards, I would like to take last shift. I would suggest taking my shield for the guards. If some creature comes for us strike the shield. The noise should wake us quicker, that is if it is needed.”
"Great idea, Lucyus. That should create a fair racket.

"Oh, and I can take first watch."

===

After her shift on watch, Butternut wakes the next person, then retires to a spot near the fir. She does her best to sleep despite her wet clothes and bedding. Nevertheless, fatigue takes hold quickly as a result of the long and strenuous day. She feels just a bit disappointed that she didn't have a reason to bang on Lucyus's shield as she falls asleep.

Come morning, Butternut waits somewhat impatiently while the food is purified by Eri. She had struggled to maintain her focus while on watch due to her growing hunger. While no stranger to hunger, her halfling heritage seems to make it harder to bear. As soon as the food is ready, she tucks in eagerly, eating a bit more than she normally would.

As she never cast any of her spells and sees no reason to change her selection of memorized spells, Butternut doesn't need to spend any of her morning on such activities. Instead, she cleans, dries, and sharpens her weapons, then sets to helping break camp and preparing to move out.
Vernar wrote:"I 'ave a bit more than that," Vernar tells Ren regarding the food, and the dwarf will happily share with anyone should it come to that, "but I concur we shoul' eliminate wasteful steps. Followin' the arrows is the best option at the moment."
Ren recommends following the arrows as the most likely means of finding whatever remains of Chimera Squad. Butternut is inclined to agree, and Vernar states as much. There is some question of food supply, but it seems sufficient for now -- especially once Lucyus admits to having quite a bit as well.

When everyone is ready, Butternut moves into position just behind and a little to one side of Ren. Her crossbow rests along one side of her pack opposite her quiver of bolts. In her hands are her short sword and one of her daggers. Peering down the tunnel, it seems as though she can see a bit further than she was able to the previous day. Perhaps there is some subtle light filtering into the tunnels...?

Erisciana -

Sleep comes surprisingly easy for the priestess of Ishtar. Exhaustion from the strenuous activities, soreness from the rough fall and landing, and the stress of dealing with restricted sight overtake Erisci and she falls into a restful enough slumber, despite some tossing and turning on the uncomfortable cave floor. Morning, or what she perceives as morning anyway, comes and Erisciana feels rested if not refreshed from the needed slumber.

She slowly sits upright looking around and stretches, greeting any of those in the group already awake with a slight smile. The priestess will make her way to the back of the cavern away from the others. She sits down cross-legged, her back to the cave and facing the cavern wall. Taking her holy symbol in her right hand, she begins the ritual of orison and supplication. Her chant and litany of petition is done in her native Zakharian language. After a short time she is silent and bows her head solemnly.

Finally she looks up, a refreshed smile upon her face. Ishtar has honored her faithful servant with the ability to make an additional spell available. Erisci knows they will need purification of their ruined food and for herself a better light source will be useful. Quite pleased that Ishtar had responded to her requests, she has the sense that her patron has also made an entreaty to Isharia on her behalf. The goddess of good magicks had also blessed her this morning and she was able to maintain a fourth spell of magicks. Quickly she recovered a tome from her backpack and then returned to her spot at the back of the cave.

Reading through the arcane volume for a short time, Erisci committed another spell to memory in addition to the ones she already maintained. A Magick Missile may prove helpful should they encounter more trouble than they did the previous day.

Preparations, devotions and study complete, Erisci will return to the group. "Please, everyone, pile up the spoiled food in as compact a space as possible. I shall now make it suitable for our consumption once more." The incantation takes about a minute of time, as she careful touches each of the various containers that have been assembled and stacked upon each other. She then waved her hands back and forth over the food and spoke the words of purification. Those watching closely could see the food visually change, becoming clean and edible once more. With a satisfied smile, she turns to the group and says, "Shall we eat?"

Erisciana (continued) -

The previous day, Butternut had commented about their search for a resting place. "True, though at least this chamber has limited access. Still, you're right that it would be worth looking for a better option."

Erisci smiles briefly. "Our options seem limited at best. The best of the worst, as it were."

Erisciana's last comment brings a snort of amusement from the halfing warrior-mage. "That would be true enlightenment; I wonder if anyone ever becomes that enlightened..."

"It may sound impossible. And yet, to believe a thing impossible makes it so," the priestess says with a smile. "Neither is something attained simply through wants."

The group eats their fill and Erisci is pleased to have some food in her stomach again. While she has fasted before during the special yearly Ritual of Purification in the great temple of her goddess, not having eaten since the previous lunch was beginning to form a pit in her innards. This would make the day much more bearable with a suitable breakfast. Everyone seemed in better spirits now.

The priestess fiddled with the silver anklet encircling her right ankle. Her thoughts turned to home briefly as she gazed at the polished silver cuff, which reflected the light of the fire, and matched the one on her left ankle as well. She said a brief prayer of intercession for her father. Then quickly pushed the thoughts of her brothers' treachery and her mother's acquiescence from her mind. This group needed to escape these caverns and distracting thoughts had no place for now.

Ren goes to check on the blob's whereabouts and they make preparations to move out following the presumed direction that Chimera Squad traveled. Erisci re-attached the armor pieces that go on her arms and shoulders. She had worn the armor before on short campaigns, but now, for some reason, she felt a bit more comfortable in it. Perhaps having slept in the leather breastplate and baltea was the reason. Perhaps it was just the fact that the surroundings were simply uncomfortable, no matter what. She slipped on the hard leather greaves with attached sandal straps and buckled them in place, attached the metal-reinforced mask to her head and tucked her leather gloves into her belt.

She will then approach Lucyus and ask him to hold out on of the unused torches. She will begin the spell by placing her hands onto the torch and touching fingertips together. Slowly she separates each of them and spreads her hands while saying "Daw Alnari!" Suddenly a fire bursts into existence on the torch. It is brighter and throws the light a much further distance than a normal torch. It also does not smoke or even give off heat surprisingly.

"That should last us about 5 hours time if my understanding of the mystical writings is accurate," she will explain. Pulling out her gloves, she will put them on and retrieve her shield and mace and ready for Vernar's word to depart.
