Crucible #16 - "Choices: Part Two"

The Vigilant has just been formed. Several members contact their families making sure that they are safe. Lily Pak contacts Gloria Hernandez, the house where her daughter Rose is attending a birthday party. The call sends Lily into a panic. She quickly says her goodbyes and leaves a card with her name and number.

Goldstar intervenes and agrees to fly Lily to Gloria's house. Blasting off in a shower of sparkles, Goldstar flies off with Lily as Flux returns from his own call.

Close by Serena just attempted to remove the mental block on Eldritch, but was not powerful enough to do so. This is watched by Blackout and Frostbite.

After a brief conversation, Flux heads over towards Major Star. There is a flurry of activity around the Major. Flux waits a few moments, trying to not interrupt Major Star. Finally, the PRIMUS commander notices Flux.

"Ah, good, you're still here", Major Star says. "Something strange is happening in North San Diego Bay and I don't have the manpower to have it investigated. You think you and your men can check it out for us?"

When asked about what is happening, the Major will add, "According to eyewitness reports, an island has appeared in the middle of the bay out of nowhere! There's what they are describing as a 'creepy looking' castle on it! I can have a chopper fly you out there to take a look. What's your decision?"

Elsewhere, Goldstar soars over San Diego. At the direction of Lily, the pair are traveling almost due north into the Hillcrest area. Lily tries to keep her bearings, but it is difficult to being seeing the lay of the land from the sky. The usual street markers and landmarks are not as helpful.

Down below the block pass in almost a blur. The streets are filled with more downed people and stopped vehicles. A few fires can be seen with telltale traces of smoke rising into the air. Emergency vehicles are everywhere. The strange effect seems to have covered an area several miles across.

Finally, Lily spots the Hernandez house and directs Lily where to land. Goldstar does so and sets down in the backyard. The whole trip took two minutes.

The Hernandez backyard has been colorfully decorated with party streamers and balloons. A piñata dangles from a high branch. Several tables have been set up and filled with food. A large cake is on one. Numerous games have been placed in the yard.

However all of these attractions are currently being ignored. All the children and adults present are staring upwards as Rose Pak is flying around the yard giggling uncontrollably to herself! Many of the children are also laughing and giggling.

GM Notes:

The Major can have a chopper run you guys out to this mysterious island ready in just a few minutes, assuming that you don't want to reach the island by some other means. It's only about a mile and half away from your present location.

Rose seems perfectly normal, with the sole exception that she is flying.

Now what gang?

Lily:

It's rather disconcerting. Lily has never seen the area from this angle, and it looks very different from a nice, simple map. For the most part, she can track the main roads through the area, but a couple of times she has to have Goldstar swing down low so that she can read the streetsigns.

As they fly over the area, Lily can't help but notice the destruction and other signs of the strange event's effects. Clearly, some are injured or worse, even this far from the mall. Fortunately, emergency services are out and dealing with it as best they can. Still, Lily's heart goes out to all of those unfortunate people.

Eventually, they land at the home of the Hernandez family. Making her way to the backyard, her jaw drops at the sight of Rose floating gracefully through the air. Even having heard about it hasn't prepared her for the reality of seeing her daughter flying!

"Oh, dear Lord! Rose, come here, sweetie," Lily says, holding out her arms toward her daughter. "Are you okay?"

Goldstar:

Goldstar is happy to be able to help her friend Lily. At Lily’s direction, Goldstar flies further away then she ever has before. This high up, Goldstar quickly realizes just how big this city is!

“Wow! This is one big city! What’s it called again?”

Nearing their destination, Goldstar lands were directed and is content to follow Lily. The laughter of the children is infectious and Goldstar can’t help but giggle herself. Seeing the source of their amusement just makes Goldstar smile.

“Is that your daughter? She’s gorgeous!” Wanting to join in on the fun, Goldstar takes off herself and begins to buzz the crowd like the little girl.

GM Notes:

"Oh, dear Lord! Rose, come here, sweetie," Lily says, holding out her arms toward her daughter. "Are you okay?"

“Hi mommie!”, Rose calls out gleefully. “Look what I can do!”

With some coaxing, Rose will fly into Lily’s arms.

Goldstar is a different story. She buzzes the crowd and the children scatter for safety! In moments the backyard is mostly deserted except for several adults and children. They all look at Lily, Rose, and Goldstar not knowing what to think.

"I am willing sir. The team will have to talk it over first."

Turning to the rest of the group Flux looks at each of them in turn. He says nothing only his bearing indicates what he expects the answer to be......

Here's were I find out if they want me to lead or get out of the way.

'No doubt an effect of the bizzare sky they have here', thinks Arcane.

'An island? That implies a body of water large enough to take ships. Can this fragment be that large?'

"I will go. An island and castle appearing from nowhere implies srong magic. Maybe they are lost too. In either case I shall go. What sort of ship is a chopper?"

"I remember no more than I did a moment ago, Lady Serena. I feel that perhaps something was changed by your efforts, a lessening of the spells power. Knowing it is magic, not dementia that binds me is progress in itself. I can try to work against magic."

“A peculiar sort of progress then”, Serena notes.

When Flux returns with word of a new mission, Serena is eager to begin. “Aye, let us investigate this castle on this mysterious island. Is that not why the Vigilant were formed? To help those in need? I stand ready to assist!”

Serena also wonders what a chopper is, but since Eldritch has already asked, it saves her from asking as well. “I like the sound of a castle. At least the surroundings will be somewhat more familiar.”

"Well this day really can't get much wierder," replies Blackout. He turns to Flux since the Major defaulted to him and sees he's expecting everyone's reaction.

There's only a few of us who seem to be 'local boys.' Looks like the Major knows who should be running this show, so lets see where it goes.

"Let's roll Flux, it's been.. well.. never since I've been in a castle, but it seems we have some who might know the terrain and what we might expect."

Goldstar doesn't understand why everyone leaves the area. Everyone was enjoying when Rose was flying around, so why not her?

Confused, Goldstar will land by Lily and Rose. Seeing the strange looks everyone is giving them, Goldstar will say, "Hi! I'm Goldstar!"

When Rose finally settles into her waiting arms, Lily hugs her close. "Oh sweetheart, that was... amazing. Please, be careful. Who knows if you will suddenly stop being able to fly? I would hate to have you fall and hurt yourself, dear. Okay?"

Goldstar's question gives Lily a moment's pause. Her first thought is to get Rose home and try to settle in in as normal a manner as possible. She still hasn't yet come to grips with what has happened. It quickly occurs to her, however, that she and Rose really should be seen by a doctor. Of course, getting around would be easier with her car, which is back at the mall.

"Ahh... Alright. My car's back at the mall, so we should retrieve it. That will also give me a chance to find out if PRIMUS knows of any doctors specializing in... um... people with powers."

Well, that's the reaction I was hoping for...right? So why am I nervous? Because I'm leading people into possible combat and haven't done that in eighteen years? Naw, couldn't be that.

"Major, looks like you have your answer. Call up a chopper."

Turning to the rest of the group, Flux looks at each one trying to evaluate their capabilities.

"Frostbite must sit seperately from everyone else as his cold aura can chill anyone rapidly."

"Blackout, please tell me about your abilities, particularly in recon. I have a feeling we may need you for that."

Serena, Eldrich, this machine that's coming flies through the air. It will take us out over the bay rapidly so stay inside the crafts interior. That goes for everybody else too. No leaning out howevermuch fun it might look like."

Great. Now I sound like a parent at the carnival. Still, better to say it now beforehand. Once it gets here the noise will be too loud to talk over.

"Darkness or dim lighting is no problem for me, and I'm not one who can be easily snuck up on. I have some experience in stealth and climbing, but not on the intensity of military training. I have a few resources if we're trying to take someone, like a sentry, out quietly."

Blackout will board the chopper once it arrives, taking a seat away from Frostbite.

Frostbite nods in agreement to this but in a Helicopter it may be a little bit hard to comply. Having no idea how big the inside of a helicopter is he will suggest returning to normal for the ride. "Um Flux, If it would make it easier on everyone I could power down before boarding the copter. If you dont think this wise Ill try to sit as far away from the others as possible."

Backing up a bit.

Snowstorms? What are snowstorms?"

Eldrich asks. 'You got to be kidding you don't know what snowstorms are?' he thinks to himself. Trying not to show his suprise , "Snowstorms happen when its cold outside and moisture in the air is somewhat frozen." he tries to explain as easily as possible.

Major Star looks pleased at Flux’s response. “Very good. It will be here in a few minutes.”

Flux then turns back to the other members of the Vigilant and tries to gauge the abilities of the newer recruits.

A few miles to the north in the backyard of the Hernandez’s we find Goldstar, Lily, and her daughter Rose. Lily’s call to check up on he daughter revealed that the little girl had been flying! Goldstar rushed Lily up there and indeed, Rose was flying about the backyard with the greatest of ease.

At Goldstar’s suggestion, she carries Lily and Rose back to where they left the other members of the Vigilant. Rose wants to fly on her own, but Lily won’t allow that. Rose greatly enjoys the flight and tries to catch the glitters that hover around Goldstar with no success.

As they fly back, Lily notices something very unusual in North San Diego Bay. Something that was not there before! A small island now sits in the waterway between Coronado and Harbor Island! As if that wasn’t strange enough, what appears to be a three story medieval castle occupies most of the island!

While waiting for the chopper to arrive, Goldstar and Lily return. Lily has with her a young girl who’s around eight years old.

The chopper arrives right after that and the group is off again. The harbor is only a few blocks from your present location. Looking out into San Diego Bay, you can all see the mysterious island. It’s rather small, measure only 200 feet by 300 feet at its longest points.

Occupying almost the entire island is a castle like something out of a fairy tale. The structure is multilevel with numerous towers emerging from the main building. Several of the towers have pointed caps on them, while others are topped with flat walkways. All seems quiet around the imposing structure…

GM Notes:

Okay, we’ve got everyone back together for the moment. PRIMUS does not currently employ a metahuman physician, but that could very well change given the current circumstances. The probably will change now with the most recent developments. In the private sector, there is a Dr. Alexis Salier who runs the San Diego branch of Bio-Investigations. At the moment, she’d be the best bet for any superhuman examinations. Of course, it is a Holiday Weekend and seeing any specialist may be problematic between that and the current disaster.

There are multiple entry points to the castle. There is a large (40’ diameter) tower top on the third level of the castle. On ground level, there are several areas large enough to serve as drop off points. A wide path winds its way from the front gate of the castle to what appears to be a boat docking area. There is another patio like area on one side of the castle that includes a door leading inside.

Use this post to decide how you’re going to investigate the castle. I’ll answer any questions as quickly as possible.

Flying toward the mall, Lily quickly spots the new addition to the harbor. Pointing with one arm, she exclaims, "Where did that come from?! There's never been an island there before. And what's up with that castle? It almost looks like something that got left behind as a result of all those weird time-warps."

"Co-o-ol..." Rose says, twisting to see what has her mother so excited. "Wow, a real castle. Mommy, do you think a real princess lives there? Or maybe a handsome prince?"

"I don't know, sweetheart. I really don't know." Lily can only hope it's something as benign as that.

Not much later, Goldstar sets them down near the other metahumans that Lily had met earlier that day. Taking Rose's hand, she walks over to the group. "Hi. I see you're all still here, though you appear to be getting ready to leave. I'd like you all to meet my daughter, Rose," she says, gesturing to the young girl holding her hand. She then introduces each of the metahumans to Rose, one at a time. "Rose, this is Flux, and this is Frostbite, and this is..." Etc.

Rose is clearly asian, like her mother, though her complexion has a decidedly darker tone. Also, while Lily's hair is quite straight, Rose's has a distinct natural curl. She's currently wearing her hair in a pair of pigtails, one to either side, with a part down the middle. She's wearing a cute yellow dress, having just come from a party.

Once the introductions are complete, Lily takes Rose over to talk with Major Star. After introducing the pair, she asks about doctors speciallizing in metahuman biology. Pulling a small pad of paper and a pen from her purse, Lily takes down the doctor's name and the name of her company. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that she will be able to see the specialist today. Lily will do her best to get a phone number and leave a message when she has the opportunity.

"Oh, one other thing, Major. Do you know of any reputable organizations or agencies that provide training for new metahumans? Particularly young ones, but also for others?" she asks, glancing at Rose. Both Rose and herself could use some help in identifying and learning to use whatever new abilities they have.

Goldstar greatly enjoys Rose’s company. (Hey, she’s a big kid at heart!)

“Yeah, that would be soooo stellar! Or maybe a fire breathing dragon! Can we go check it out?”

But Lily insists on landing near the others. Goldstar is disappointed, but only for a moment. She learns that the rest of the Vigilant are going to go check out the castle!

“Stellar! Let’s go!”

It seems that they already have transportation in mind to reach the island, so Goldstar won’t have to carry everyone out.

“Hey, how about I carry Frosty with me? I’m too hot for him to make cold, so he doesn’t bother me a bit.” After a pause, Goldstar adds, “Hey, maybe that’s the headquarters for those Green and Blue Knights we met earlier?”

“Are you well, my friend? We were concerned when you departed so suddenly. And who is this charming young lady?”

Bending down on one knee, Serena will greet Lily’s daughter Rose. “I am Serena, Knight of the Order of the Golden Chalice. Do you have powers like your mother? Will you be accompanying us on the expedition to yon edifice?”

“The only reputable program that I’ve heard of in this part of the world is the Young Champions program on Sanctuary. Now that you mention it, with this sudden influx of superhumans, contact them for assistance might not be a bad idea.”

When Serena mentions going to explore the castle, Rose will happily pipe in, “Can we, mommie!? Please?”

Rose is all too happy to chatter on with Goldstar at length on all those subjects that seem so important at that age, whenever opportunity allows.

Lily greets Serena with a smile. "Yes, Serena. I believe so. I'm sorry to have run off so abruptly, but I had received notice that my daughter was flying around in the air. As she had never before done such a thing, and I was worried about her safety, I felt the need to go check on her immediately. However, it seems she is okay, and has just gained new abilities like myself."

"A Knight?" Rose asks in reply. "Like Lancelot and Tutter the Great?" Rose leans close and whispers conspiritorially. "Actually, Tutter's a mouse, but he likes to pretend that he's a brave knight." Mention of powers brings a sparkle to her eyes. "Yeah! I can fly! It's so-o-o-o cool!" Suddenly, she gets a confused look on her face. "Like mommy? Mommy doesn't have any powers..."

Lily leans down. "Actually, dear, I seem to have gotten some strange abilities at the same time as you did. Mostly, I just run really fast."

The mention of going to the castle drives a spike of alarm through Lily's heart. Trying to remain calm, Lily answers Rose's question in as mild a tone as she can manage. "I'm sorry, Rose, but it's just too dangerous. That castle appeared out of nowhere, and we have no way of knowing what dangers it might hold. If it turns out to be safe, we will certainly make the time to visit it later. Okay, honey?"

Frostbite
As Goldstar and Lily land nearby,Frostbite takes not of the young girl clutching her mother's hand. Lily begins to introduce the little girl as Rose.
"Hey kiddo, Its nice to meet you." he will say with a wave. Knowing that he can cause people to be rather cold he will keep his distance from the little girl , though trying to appear friendly.

"Your daughter flies!?'

Turning to Goldstar, " If you are willing to carry me there it would be appreciated. I dont know what would happen if I accidently touched one of them. Though this time I have to remember not to keep my mouth open, I think I swallowed a fly the last time."

Flux:

Flux looks up at the returning Goldstar and Lily relieved to see that nothing had happened to them.

That little girl has to be Lily's daughter. She's cute.

Bending down to Rose when he is introduced, Flux holds out two fingers like a handshake.

"Pleased to meet you, Rose."

Flying? Let's hope Mom learns how to do that too, or bedtime could become...problematical.

"I'm sorry Rose it's best you stay here for now. We don't know who's in the castle yet."

Straightening up again Flux looks at Lily.

"If you wish to stay with your daughter Miss Pak I will certainly understand."

Turning to Goldstar Flux answers her question.

"I doubt if the Steel Squadron came from the island Goldstar, it just appeared now."

As the helicopter approaches and lands Flux looks it over for pontoons but sees none.

Boarding next to the pilot Flux asks him(?) how far out the new island is and if the distance is within the known area of effect from the burst.

Hmmm. No water landing, but a ropeline with powered take-up. Will have to do.

"Are there any spare hand-held radio units aboard, Captain Novak", says Flux as he dons a headset?

Eldrich Arcane:

Eldrich is pleased to see familiar faces returning from the sky, even if he still doesn't know how they are doing that. Lily has brought her daughter with her too, and it seems she also flies!
Eldrich cannot begin to speculate on the method used that does not involve magic in any way.

Suddenly shy, Eldrich nods to little Rose when introduced but does not know the correct form of greeting to use so says nothing.

When the "chopper" arrives Eldrich knows immediately why it is named that; the vehicle chops the very air to stay aloft, making horrendus noise to ward off potential wild predators in the prossess!

'A clever solution', thinks Arcane. 'But where are the armaments to ward off attacks by sentient raiders?'

Arcane will board the craft with some trepidation as it also radiates no magic.

"After you, Lady Serena."

"Gross!" Goldstar will wrinkle her noise and make a pained expression at that thought. Out of nowhere she'll add, " Boy am I glad that I don't have to eat! Flies? Ick!"

Goldstar will scoop Frosty up in her arms and follow the chopper to the island.

"Oh, where should I land at?"

"No need to apologize. Concern for one's child is perfectly understandable. Especially one that has been inexplicably altered."

"A Knight?" Rose asks in reply. "Like Lancelot and Tutter the Great?" Rose leans close and whispers conspiritorially. "Actually, Tutter's a mouse, but he likes to pretend that he's a brave knight."

Serena will lean forward and whisper back, "Fear not, small one. Tutter's secret is safe with me."

"After you, Lady Serena."

Serena will bow in response. "Thank you, good sir."

When the subject of landing comes up, Serena will add, "It seems to me that until we are aware of the true nature of yon castle, we must assume that it is non-hostile. Therefore, we should approach via the main gate before trying in other entrances. To do otherwise could be misconstrued as a threat by the inhabitants of yon edifice, provided there are any."

"That's correct. It's political hotbed, but given this current crisis and the sheer number of people changed, it is the logical place to call for assistance." (And something that's been part of the plan all along... ;D)

Rose will pout a little bit about not being allowed to go along to the castle after being told no by Lily and then by Flux. "I don't get to have any fun..."

Boarding next to the pilot Flux asks him (?) how far out the new island is and if the distance is within the known area of effect from the burst.

Captain Novak is a he. (Oh, and Flux asked me about the chopper and its pilot by PM, so he didn't just pull that out of thin air.) The new island is just less than two miles away. (And yes, that puts it, like the Hernandez backyard, within the radius of the white radiation.)

"Are there any spare hand-held radio units aboard, Captain Novak", says Flux as he dons a headset?

"Here you go," Captain Novak says as he hands Flux three radios. "Where do you want me to leave you off at?"

Also, in the background radio chatter you can hear that the death toll has reached 637 so far. Given the large population of San Diego and the fact that it was a holiday weekend with many people in the downtown area, the number of people exposed to the white radiation could be as many as five to seven thousand...

Frostbite

"Gross!" Goldstar will wrinkle her noise and make a pained expression at that thought. Out of nowhere she'll add, " Boy am I glad that I don't have to eat! Flies? Ick!"

Frostbite begins to chuckle at her expression, "I'm glad I dont eat them either. I never have nor do I want to." he says with a smile. "Was just having a little bit of fun."

As we begin to fly after the chopper Goldstar as where should she land. "Follow the chopper, land nearby where it lands. Just watch out for the rotors."

Flux:

"Thank you captain, these will be a big help," as Flux takes the radios.

"I agree with you, Serena. We don't know if they are hostile or lost or even if anybody's in there. But not right up to the main gate. Captain, how about letting us off by the boat dock area. We'll walk it from there and you take the helicopter out a ways."

"Blackout I want you to take one radio, Miss Pak you take another. If we get seperated, or run into trouble call the chopper back and get yourselves out."

"When we land I'm giving the third radio to Frostbite and Goldstar. Then we'll set up into three sets of emergency teams each with radio contact just in case of seperation."

Flux smiles under the impromtu ski mask.

"Not that I'm planning to split us up but one never knows."

"If it comes to that I want Frostbite and Goldstar together. They have mobility, ranged assault and Goldstar is immune to Frostbite's unintended cold effect. Arcane and Serena and Miss Pak, you have mobility and range as well as familiarity with this type of setting."

And Lily is the only one who knows what a radio is....

Flux looks at Blackout while rubbing the back of his neck lightly.

"This means you're stuck with me. Hopefully it won't get that dire."

"Everybody O.K. with that?"

Lily:

Rose gives Frostbite a shy wave. "Hi."

A rueful smile crosses Lily's lips at his question. "She does now, apparently. It seems the party she was at was within in the radius of the strange white effect that changed myself and so many others."

Rose shakes Flux's hand, though standing well back as though a bit shy. "And you too, Mr. Flux," she says with a small curtsy. "That's a funny name." Lily shoots her a look, and Rose doesn't say more.

"I'm afraid that's what I'm going to have to do, Flux. I won't leave my daughter behind. Plus, with no training and only the slimmest familiarity with the new abilities, I would be more of a hindrance than a help, and could endanger others if trouble arises."

Rose waves at Eldritch Arcane, but says nothing, remaining by her mother's side.

"Thank you, Serena," Lily says with a relieved smile. "I appreciate your understanding. I must admit to having been quite anxious as a result of the news. All in all, this has been a very stressful day."

Serena's comment brings a giggle from Rose, who hides her laugh behind her free hand.

Lily nods as Major Star finishes filling her in. "I had surmised as much. I'll contact the island as soon as I have a chance. I appreciate your time, Major. I know you have a lot to deal with here, and I need to be going. Bye."

Lily waves as the helicopter takes off. "Good Luck!" she shouts over the roar of the prop.

[[OOC: As Lily isn't going along, she's not on the helicopter. Flux will have to give the remaining radio to someone else. Leaving it with Major Star or one of the other PRIMUS agents might not be a bad idea.]]

Once the helicopter has moved well away, Lily takes Rose and heads for where she had parked her car so much earlier in the day. She can only hope it wasn't seriously damaged in the tumult...

Lily will take Rose home and try to settle into as normal an evening as possible. She'll try to contact this Bio-Investigations organization, though she' likely to only be able to leave a message requesting that they contact her. She'll also attempt to reach someone at Sanctuary.

If she wasn't able to get the necessary contact information from Major Star or one of this staff, she'll start by searching the internet for the information. If that proves insufficient, she'll try the local PRIMUS headquarters.

Lastly, Lily will try to find a clinic that might be able to see her and Rose either later that day or the next for a basic medical check, just to put her mind at ease.
