Tales from the Edge - Debts to Pay

Post by GM Fang »

It was supposed to be a simple job. A short hyperspace jump, a remote planet, and no blaster fire whatsoever. But simple jobs never stay simple, not on the edge of the Empire...

Previous conversations -
Harrison wrote:Hearing this Harrison says "My subjects? But, I was just meaning the smooth talking you just did there. I would love to learn to be better at that."
Neesa smiles slyly. "There's more to being smooth than just words. Maybe I could show you a pointer or two."
Harrison wrote:Caught off guard by the fact that he didn't get slapped and at what Vanda has just said, Harrison finishes the second kiss and says with a big smile on his face "Indeed, you very well might fulfill those dreams, and yes it could be very interesting, if you'll let it."
"Talk to me later," Vanda says with wink.
Harrison wrote:Harrison suddenly realizes he may have gone a bit too overboard on his flirtations with Vanda and blown his chances with Neesa, at least for now. He says "Okay, if that's what you want. It seems like the two of you were close, so I can understand getting reacquainted." Harrison then makes his way to see if Vanda would like the extra company for the trip.
"Yes, we have some catching up to do," Neesa responds.

"Most certainly," Venlana chimes in.

Sometime later at a wee morning hour, Harrison indeed finds himself in Vanda's cabin. He cannot help but have a smile on his face after the encounter with the ship's captain. Zeltrans were definitely pleasure seekers of the upteenth degree. Nearby, Vanda stirs and sits up, her long curly blue hair cascading about her shoulders. Vanda smiles, then says, "I need my beauty sleep now. Thanks for a wonderful evening."

A moment later, Harrison finds himself in the hallway outside Vanda's quarters, a confused look etched on his face. The droid GI-61 turns the corner and approaches. It sees the adventurer standing there and stops to contemplate for a moment. "Murder is always a viable option," the droid says and then continues down the hall.

As Harrison starts to decide what to do next he hears a noise, and feels it at the same time. At first it sounds like machinery droning on. It's far too deep of a sound to be an alarm of any kind. He listens for a moment and the sound lasts for about 10 seconds, stops and resumes again. "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN...."

Any of the group who are light sleepers will also hear the sound awaken them from their slumber, but it is easy to fall asleep again, a soothing white noise sound that seems to engulf the entire ship.

The next few days pass rather uneventfully. (again feel free to add any comments, questions, scenes, etc that you wish to have happen during this time)

Then in the middle of the third day of travel, Venlana's smooth voice comes over the ship's loudspeakers. "We have just completed our jump from hyperspace. We're about to enter Gavos' orbit."

Vlad during the trip does not do much but clean his gear and makes sure that his blade has a sharp edge. He will wander about the ship and see if it has any ship guns.

During the trip Vlad talk to Neesa. "Hello, sorry if I gave the wrong impression when we first met, just did not like the smell of the Hutt and smoke. Name is Vlad, Vlad Storm. So can you tell me about yourself and the firefight that happened?" Vlad will talk in a calm manner.

Kitazza-

Kit mentions to Pash that perhaps they can try to take the ship they found in the other landing bay. "It's worth a shot. Assuming the ship is still there. Or we'd have to track it down somehow."

“If we do run into him again, I hope the others are willing to finish things,” he growls to his smuggler friend looking in Harrison’s direction. "I don’t want to keep leaving problems alive who do us wrong, they tend to multiply,” he growls out, his translator squeaking out a response in common.
Harrison suddenly realizes he may have gone a bit too overboard on his flirtations with Vanda and blown his chances with Neesa, at least for now. He says "Okay, if that's what you want. It seems like the two of you were close, so I can understand getting reacquainted." Harrison then makes his way to see if Vanda would like the extra company for the trip.
Kitazza shakes his big mangy head as he witnesses Vanda’s and Nessa’s interaction with their leader. Just like his skill with a blaster, can’t hit a target when it counts, he thinks as he lets out a growling laugh.

Seeing what Dorn does to Kit, Harrison laughs and says "Can't say that I have seen a Wookiee being petted before, looks like you may have a new friend for life there, Kitazza."
“Be good to have in a Cantina fight," he growls back. The ghost of a smirk coming to his lips as he recovers from being wookie-handled.
Kitazza asks about whether the crew know anything about Gavos. None of them really know much about it so Venlana does a computer search. "Gavos is a rock with a harmful atmosphere. It has apparently been the site of oridium mining for some time. Originally owned by a wealthy family from the Core Worlds more than 20 years ago, then bought by a Hutt. Seems like it's changed hands a few times since then. There's not much more about it. You'll need breath masks if you are heading there. It's highly toxic - ammonia and methane with strong winds. Lots of storms from the close proximity to the system's star and of course when it rains, it's a stinging caustic spray. Glad I'm not going out down there."
Taking a deep breath, Kitazza is glad he got a rebreather mask. “Out of the pan, into the fire,” he mumbles. Silently he wonders how the others. Once they land they will have to seek shelter from the atmosphere.
"OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN...."

Any of the group who are light sleepers will also hear the sound awaken them from their slumber, but it is easy to fall asleep again, a soothing white noise sound that seems to engulf the entire ship.
Finding his bunk, Kitazza finally gets to relax for a few moments. His paw goes to his wounded arm and he pulls back the blood-matted fur. Moving to the washing area, Kitazza begins to dress and clean the wound. Slowly he makes it back to the bunk and begins to start falling asleep as a loud noise breaks the relatively peaceful ship, and then disappates and comes back. Not opening his eyes he grabs one of the pillows in his bunk and throws it in Zavi’s direction/bunk “Shut it!”he growls sleeply as he hears it land somewhere and then the sound comes again. “Sleepily he gets up and bangs his head on the bunk head. A moderate growl comes from his lips as he feels his forehead with his paw. “What is that?” he asks.

As he finally awakes, Kitazza will go to the common area sleepily dropping his bag at his feet. Sitting down and leaning back he puts his fury feet up on a table and begins taking out his bowcaster. Slowly he takes it apart, cleans it and places it back together, fully loaded. He then takes out the two blasters he took from the cantina and does the same. He looks around for the others then stows his weapons. Slowly he takes out his Rykk blade and tests the edge with his paw. Not liking the edge he takes out a sharpener and slowly hones the edge.

Zavi:

Zavi is content to simply observe for now. He's not sure he actually trusts the slinky green furless woman all that much, but that goes double for the slinky pink furless woman. Zavi doesn't say anything, but does keep his eyes open.

Zavi asks if there is time to visit Captain Zate's ship before take off.
"We are going to lift off as soon as all you settled," Bep the Ortolan says. "So unfortunate we no have time for extra wait.”
Zavi nods his understanding and moves off to store his gear in his assigned quarters. The Squib takes the top bunk, assuming that they are stacked on top of each other. Zavi figures that he can climb better than a wookie and if something shakes the ship he'd rather land on the wookie than have the wookie land on him.

After storing his gear and weapons Zavi will look around the ship to familiarize himself with the layout. He notes good defensive positions and places where the hull could be breached if circumstances dictate it. The Squib mentally kicks himself for not packing explosives. They could have been handy if things go south. After his exploration, Zavi returns to his quarters and inspects his gear, making sure it is in top condition.
“Not good good for fur,” Zavi notes about the conditions on Gavos.

That night, Zavi turns in, curls up and falls to sleep. His slumber is rudely interrupted sometime later.
Finding his bunk, Kitazza finally gets to relax for a few moments. His paw goes to his wounded arm and he pulls back the blood matted fur, Moving to the washing area, Kitazza begins to dress and clean the wound. Slowly he makes it back to the bunk and begins to start falling asleep as a loud noise breaks the relatively peaceful ship, and then dissipates and comes back.

A moderate growl comes from his lips as he feels his forehead with his paw. “What is that?” he asks.
Zavi hears the dreadful noise and has no idea what it is. Suddenly a pillow is flung in his direction. Not fully awake himself, Zavi grabs his blaster rifle/grenade launcher and jumps down from his bunk.

“Are we under under attack?”

Neesa smiles slyly. "There's more to being smooth than just words. Maybe I could show you a pointer or two."
Hearing this from Neesa, Harrison replies "Sound's good to me. I am ready and eager to learn."

Nearby, Vanda stirs and sits up, her long curly blue hair cascading about her shoulders. Vanda smiles, then says, "I need my beauty sleep now. Thanks for a wonderful evening." A moment later, Harrison finds himself in the hallway outside Vanda's quarters, a confused look etched on his face.
Harrison stands outside Vanda's quarters not quite sure what just happened. Thinking to himself, as he looks back at the door, "Umm, Did I just...Did she just....she just just treated me like her own man whore. Am I okay with that?" Harrison can't help himself and begins to laugh at the situation he has found himself in.

The droid GI-61 turns the corner and approaches. It sees the adventurer standing there and stops to contemplate for a moment. "Murder is always a viable option," the droid says and then continues down the hall.

Hearing the droid's remark, Harrison begins to laugh louder, he then puts on his trusty fedora and straightens himself up, as he turns to the droid and says "It may well be, but I think she'll come around to keeping me all night next time."

Not sure now where he will bunk for the night, Harrison heads for the refresher, he is startled by the strange sound and stops in his tracks looking around and down the corridors. Whether or not the sound stops, he will make his way to the cockpit, to see if an on duty crew member may know what the sound was.

Neesa is a little surprised to see Vlad approach her during the trip to Gavos. She considers for a moment. "I suppose would say that I am a bit of a rogue. I consider myself more of a collector and entrepreneur. But as it often happens here in the Outer Rim things do not always go as expected."

"As for the encounter with Visquod, he is a previous accomplice in some missions. But he blames me for losing payment on a job for Bargos the Hutt. In truth, it was his own fault but he refuses to accept the blame. Our encounters have grown a bit more , aggressive, shall we say, each subsequent time."

"And what is your story, beyond being a bodyguard for the rotund Rodian you work for," Neesa asks.

--------------
Kitazza wrote:“If we do run into him again, I hope the others are willing to finish things,” he growls to his smuggler friend looking in Harrison’s direction. "I don’t want to keep leaving problems alive who do us wrong, they tend to multiply,” he growls out, his translator squeaking out a response in common.
"We'll finish him," Pash says. "Count on it!"

-------------

After his encounter with Vanda, Harrison takes a few moments to get his bearings and figure out what happened.
Hearing the droid's remark, Harrison begins to laugh louder, he then puts on his trusty fedora and straightens himself up, as he turns to the droid and says "It may well be, but I think she'll come around to keeping me all night next time."
Gigi stops and turns to face the human. She pauses, apparently trying to understand the situation further. "There will be blood."
Harrison heads for the refresher, he is startled by the strange sound and stops in his tracks looking around and down the corridors. Whether or not the sound stops, he will make his way to the cockpit, to see if an on duty crew member may know what the sound was.
As he approaches the cockpit, Harrison hears the sound of an electro-torch crackling away. He sees a figure hunched over an open panel, sparks popping all around. The creature turns at Harrison's approach, removing the welding mask that covered its reptilian head. The forked tongue flicked out at him, testing the air. Harrison saw that its upper torso was similar to a humanoid but lower body resembled a snake. The scales ranged from light brown to a darkish green.

The creature returned to its work without saying anything. Harrison stood there a moment then asked about the noise. The reptilian alien stopped a few moments later then turned once more. "You mussst be Harrrrisssson. Thissss one will be with you assss sssssooon asssss thissss one hasss completed thisssss repair." Harrison waits several minutes as the alien finishes his repair and methodically closes up the access panel. It then puts all of its tools into its toolbox, carefully organizing them. Closing the toolbox, he places it onto the command chair. Finally, the reptile turns to address Harrison once more.

"Thissss one isss known assss Sssssasssssasssssstraaassssss Kassssatraaasssasss," the alien says, extending a four-fingered hand in the archaeologist's direction. "The crew callsss me Essssskay. Unfortunately vocal chords of mosssst lifeformssss have sssome difficulty with Sluissssssi namessss."

Harrison reiterates his original question. Eskay listens for a moment. "There are many noisssessss currently active." He then begins to list the various noises starting with the sub-light engines, the air refreshers, the signal lights on the command panel operating the auto-nav system, etc, etc. Harrison stops Eskay and specifies the sound he means when it drones out again.

"Thisss sssound could be many thingssss. Thissss one will sssample the sssound and begin analyssssisss for yourssself. Thisss one'sss full report sssshould be complete in about one ssstandard hour."

Harrison responds, "I don't need to know everything that the sound could be. Don't you know what is making that sound now?"

Eskay blinks his reptilian eyes at Harrison a few times. "Thissss sssound is the ssssnoring of the being, dessssignated Dorn, a member of the raccce known as Herglic, alternately known as Koodan. They are a sssspecccciessss native to the planet Giju."

---------------

During the trip to Gavos, the team takes various opportunities to wander the ship, Vlad and Zavi particularly, and note important locations. The ship is a YT-1300. They are cheap, relatively plentiful and highly customizable. This ship appears to have some of the cargo area converted to quarters. Apparently Vanda or the ship's previous owner has done extra passenger transport. The ship has slightly upgraded gun turrets. The best defensive places are likely the ship's holds as the hallways are typically narrow and offer little cover. The most vulnerable location are the gun turrets themselves, but a cargo ship like this could be breached almost anywhere except in the rear engine area.

-------------
Taking a deep breath, Kitazza is glad he got a rebreather mask. “Out of the pan, into the fire,” he mumbles. Silently he wonders how the others. Once they land they will have to seek shelter from the atmosphere.
"So it would appear," Venlana answers.

"That's the way it always goes out here on the rim, I am afraid," Neesa answers.

Venlana will continue. "It appears the original mining crews set up a system of storm barrier generators to help protect the facilities from Gavos' harsh environment, a double-redundant set of eight generators encircles the mine at a hundred kilometer radius. Each seems to generate a semi-permeable storm barrier. Interesting, it is essentially a giant windbreak made of energy. The atmosphere is still caustic but the mining facility appears to be rather untouched from the high winds."

Please continue any and all activities and conversations. Posting to move the adventure forward.

Venlana begins operating her navigation console as Bep guides the ship according to her electronic instructions. "Interesting," Venlana will state. "We are not receiving a hail from the mines. Just an automated signal that the mine is closed to visitors. There is a nav beacon to a landing pad. Shall we approach?"

After hearing Eskay's reason for the sounds, Harrison says "Thanks for the info Eskay. It must take some getting used to hearing his snoring."

Sitting in the cockpit as they approach the planet, Harrison listens to Venlana's report of the situation. He then says "I say go ahead and approach the beacon cautiously. Don't think you want your ship tossed around in the storms. Maybe a quick fly over the area before we land as well. Sound good?"

Vlad takes note of the names in one of his books. Ok, so the bug, if I see him gets a hole in the head and he will be off the list of "problem things in future".

When Neesa ask about his story, Vlad lets his hair fall over his eyes so she can not see them. Memories of his past come back to the surface. Anger, hate, and blood-lust start to come back from that day. Vlad tries to calm down as much as he can so he does not make a mistake. "My past is not for the light of heart," Vlad lets that sit in the air for a second or two before continuing. "Both of my parents were killed in front of eyes because they were too good at their jobs and one of their superiors did not like that; so he made a lie which I did not find out about until much later. I was being trained to deal with dealings that had to be dealt with in the dark. I was removed due to the lie, my teachers thinking that I was the same as my parents. Only one person believed my story and is helping me find information on the truth but I have to pay with information as well. That was when I was 12. Now my goal is to hunt the 'Superior' and right my parents' names. As I said, not for the light of heart."

"The Rodian I work for, I am really not a guard but his cleaner so to speak." Vlad is thinking if there is anything else he should say when he finally sees her face. "But that is my past and this is the now; I try to think of the past too much due to its darkness and stay in the light as much as I can and when I can. That is why I do not try to make friends on missions: one too many never come back or retire due to injuries. " Vlad tries to make the mood lighter but it probably does not work. "The only thing I can promise on this mission is its completion and that is it. If I had a heavy blaster rifle with a few mods it would be easier if things turn south, but not by much." Vlad falls silent remembering different people he has met and worked with. "Well that is my story probably not what you were expecting was it?"

To Vlad his past is his past nothing more and nothing less. It made him who he is and how he operates. Of course it helps him remember what he is living for too.

Kitazza-
“Are we under under attack?”
Rubbing his forehead and blinking back the pain, trying to see straight, he growls, “Dunno." He waits a few seconds as he grabs his bow caster and brings it to bear as the sound rips through the ship again. “Is that the snoring they spoke about?” he asks rubbing a sleepy eye with his paw.
"So it would appear," Venlana answers.

"That's the way it always goes out here on the rim, I am afraid," Neesa answers.

The atmosphere is still caustic but the mining facility appears to be rather untouched from the high winds."
Kitazza thinks for a moment then growls, “And they are still running?” he growls in response, “Any chance you can scan for life?” he growls curiously, though he doubts the scans will show much through the storm.

Neesa listens to Vlad's story and nods when he is finished. "Friends and companions are sometimes fleeting here on the Outer Rim. Fortune, fate and ruin can all lead us in different paths than we originally intended, both for good and ill. But thank you for the explanation. I too share your 'distrust' at times."

-------------------------------

The ship moves in on the mining site and the terrible winds are obvious, throwing the ship around. Anyone with a weak stomach will begin to feel queasy.

Vanda tells Bep, "Don't tarry out here too long. Your discounted rate isn't going to leave much for external repairs." Bep just hoots quietly in response.

Venlana then adds, "There's a small landing pad at the coordinates I just sent you, Bep."

Kitazza asks if the mine is still running and if there are signs of life. Venlana initiates a scan from the cockpit controls. A few moments later the results are available. "The scanners are unable to pick up much between the atmospheric interference and the shields. I will try again when we get inside the shield, but the facility does seem to be active. it is under power and I can detect the main power core."

The Ortolan guides the ship in and those in the cockpit can see a small landing pad located next to a squat bunker buried in a hillside of one of the planet's northern highland plateaus. The pad is a tight grey circle of duracrete lined with blinking red lights and marked by faded and cracked yellow paint. An old Treadwell Repair Droid can be seen rusting in one corner; its upraised and lifeless limbs resemble those of a dead and desiccated spider. A sparking pressure curtain flickers over the top of the pad. A covered walkway leads off the pad and up to the entrance of the bunker.

Venlana will state, "the pressure curtain keeps out Gavos' hostile atmosphere."

"In that case," Vanda comments, "we'll stay parked on the landing pad until you get settled inside. Then we're heading out of the atmosphere until you call us back to pick you up." She then adds to Bep," Remember to charge an extra 1000 creds if anyone wants to go to a planet with a hostile environment. We're going to need a new paint job."

Venlana scans again. This time she gets some results. "Most of the life forms I am detecting are deep under the planet's surface. They must be in the mines."

"But wouldn't there be a shift of people who are off duty as well as those managing the facility who are not miners?" Neesa asks.

"I'm only getting one or two life forms in the upper structure," Venlana confirms simply.

Bep maneuvers the freighter to the landing pad and the ship touches down. Those going planetside please indicate anything you are leaving behind from your listed gear, if anything, otherwise, you will be assumed to be carrying everything listed on your sheets.

Now what?

Vlad thanks Neesa for the understanding "If you want to know more, only time will tell."
_________
When Vlad feels them hit the planet he puts on his breath mask, grabs his gear and heads outside with his blaster at the ready. When he see the droid in the ground he goes up to it and gives it a small kick to see if it is still working. After that he will explore a little and make a small map of the place making notes as he finds things that are interesting, natural land marks, or things that are out of place.

While gathering his gear to disembark the craft, Harrison asks Venlana "Are we sure that our communications will breach the environment past this pad? Perhaps we should do a check, before you get to far out."

Once Harrison disembarks, he looks around the pad to see if there is anyone or anything watching them, because Venlana did say that she she was getting one or two lifeform readings in the upper structure. He will then head down the pathway toward the bunker.

Kitazza-

The large wookie sits in a chair as the ship begins to descend onto Gavos. He closes his amber eyes and silently mumbles to himself: "I hate this part." He would much rather be flying it and controlling his own fate than leaving it in the hands of someone else.

As the ship begins to get battered back and forth, Kit gathers up his gear and places his breathing mask on. Upon landing he brings his bow caster to bear and looks upon the landing. Seeing the droid that Vlad goes and kicks, Kitazza looks to Neesa, "If I bring that inside could you hack it?" he growls. If Neesa is agreeable to it, Kitazza will go to the droid, examine it for damage then pick it up and bring it to the door. He will then cover the others with his bowcaster till they make their way in.

Zavi simply shrugs as he has no idea what is causing the hideous noise.

Later the ship lands and the mission finally begins. Zavi dons his breathing mask and has his blaster rifle in his hands as he exits the ship. He ignores the droid, but is concerned that there are only two beings inside the upper structures.

“This doesn't doesn't feel right.”

Weapon at the ready, Zavi follows the others into the mining complex.

Our adventurers have finally touched down on Gavos and begun their mission for Teemo the Hutt.
Harrison wrote:While gathering his gear to disembark the craft, Harrison asks Venlana "Are we sure that our communications will breach the environment past this pad? Perhaps we should do a check, before you get too far out."
Venlana raises her eyebrow at the suggestion. "Good point. We can run a test from the platform outside and also once you enter the facility. I wouldn't recommend trying to signal from deep in the mines. That may not reach us even without this lovely atmosphere."

The group dons breath masks just in case, even though the pressure curtain is in place. While it keeps the worst of the atmosphere out, it is best to be sure everyone seems to think. Weapons at the ready, the team moves out.

Vlad is the first to approach the dilapidated droid rusting away on the platform. He kicks it once and doesn't get any response. Harrison looks around but he doesn't get the feeling he is being watched.
Kitazza wrote:Seeing the droid that Vlad goes and kicks, Kitazza looks to Neesa, "If I bring that inside could you hack it?" he growls.
Neesa moves closer and takes a look at the droid. She pulls out a portable scanner and waves it over the droid. Frowning, she shakes her head. "This unit is completely dead. It's processor is destroyed. It might be usable for parts or a few credits to a junk dealer like Vorn." Looking closer, Kit can see that there is no energy flowing in the droid at all. It's not just powered down, but it is unworking.

Zavi expresses his concerns about the situation. “This doesn't doesn't feel right.”

Neesa agrees with the diminutive Squib. "Simple jobs rarely stay simple," she responds. "If I were to guess, I think we're going to earn our retainers." The Falleen pulls our her blaster pistol and has it at the ready, much like the rest of the group.

The large durasteel emergency airlock doors hiss open at your command. There is a small window in the wall to the left of the door, though it is too dark to make out whatever may lie behind it. Scorch marks and charring mar the glass at chest height. A closed door is opposite the airlock door, that is now open. I am assuming no one has entered the small antechamber.

Harrison's communicator goes off. Venlana's voice comes over the comm. "We're going to lift off now," she states simply. "Give Bep about 1 or 2 minutes to move to the outer edges of the atmosphere and try and contact us."

The test goes off well. Venlana acknowledges the message and directs Bep to move the ship completely out of the atmosphere. She recommends that Harrison test the comm link again once the group is inside the facility.

The howling wind can still be heard outside the pressure curtain, despite not being felt. It must be amazing how strong the storms would be without the energy windbreak that the generators create. The buildings likely would not withstand such an onslaught.

"What a miserable planet, this little speck has turned out to be," Pash grumbles.

Now what?

Seeing as everyone is here Vlad will lay down some rules to keep the party a bit safer cause his gut is tense in this quiet mine.

"I have two rules that I want every one to follow while we are here. They are simple but should help keep every one safe and sound for the most part. Rule 1: No one goes anywhere alone. I do not like how quiet it is here and I do not like the fact that no one came to greet us. Rule 2: if you hear something move, ask for its name; if you do not hear a response get weapons at the ready and even if you do hear a response keep your weapons at the ready. With that out of the way, I will try to make a map of the place as we go so let's clear the rooms one by one. I do not like getting a surprise in my back."

With that laid out and out of the way Vlad will look around where they are at to see if he can find anything of interest or info on what happened. "Kit will you help me out? or Zavi?"

“Cheer up”. The wookie growls. “Soon you may be back on the desert planet with your pick of women.” He says with a elbow to Pash’s shoulder.

“Perhaps it’s supper time.” He says evenly at Vlad. Bringing his bowcaster to bare, Kitazza scans the room for any damage or anything that might be out of the ordinary.

While looking to the ceiling then back to the walls he hears the human call for his help. “I can,“ he growls as he continues to look around. Taking out his blade he will make a quick mark on the wall. If they are to make it back and not get lost it is better than leaving bread crumbs.

With the first communications check complete, and the entry way to the facility open, Harrison enters the reception area and looks around to get the layout. He then says "As an archaeologist, when I deal with mazes, I always keep to my left. Call it a superstition, if you want, but I think it helps to not get lost. It might also help you map out the place easier Vlad."

As requested, after a couple of minutes in the facility, Harrison will once again make a comm check to Venlanna and her crew. Thinking it might be a good idea to use some code words just in case our comms are being heard, Harrison calls out "Baby chicks to Mother Hen, can you hear the rooster?"

The group moves into the first room past the entrance. This spacious and brightly lit room is richly furnished with comfortable armchairs, massive and worn couches and a dark hardwood table. A dejarik set sits in one corner, the flickering playing pieces in their starting positions. Holographic pictures depicting scenes of lush temperate landscapes and wild overgrown swamps decorate the walls.

Several doors besides the one entered lead out from this room. One goes to the reception office. The group passed the window to the room outside. This small office room contains a desk and a sturdy metal chair. The room is dingy, illuminated by a dim and flickering desk lamp. The other lights in the room are smashed and tiny bits of glass crunch underfoot. A blotchy smear of dark liquid stains the carpet.

The other two doors appear to be not only shut but locked.

Up on the ship on the edge of the storm energy barrier, a message comes through with some static, "Baby ... to Mother ..., can you hear ...?"

Venlana raises an eyebrow and tries hard to suppress a grin. Bep is not so reserved and begins to hoot loudly, the Ortolan equivalent of giggles. Vanda cuffs the blue alien on the back of the head, but it only quiets the hoots a little, not silencing them entirely. Venlana finally lets out a snicker and looks back at the ship's captain. She is greeted by a reddish-pink index finger and a stern gaze. The Pantoran's face takes on a deadpan look and she turns back to the comm center. "Yes, Mother," she says, the last part ending in a sputtering laugh.

Venlana then opens a channel. "Affirmative, young ones. You may continue your toddling. We'll keep your bassinet ready." After a moment, she cannot help herself but add, "Auntie V out."

"I'm sure he's just referring to the ship as the mother," Vanda mumbles to herself as she heads back to her cabin.

Now what?"

Vlad looks at Harrison when he speak in the come and turns to face forward quickly when the reply comes in the same manner. Must not laugh.
"Kit Vazi thanks for helping me look through the rooms. Lets get the stuff our "Hutt" wants and get the hell out of here," Vlad says that to his partners in a quite voice so he can listen to his surrounding trying to identify the sound. He will also look around to the place so he can try to figure out what happened here. "Those in the back make sure you keep your eyes and ears open I do not want something coming up on my 6s," Vlad says to the others in the group. Now what happened here and where the hell are the people.

Kit looks to the others as Zavi takes up position in back of him. "We will have to breach the doors if they aren't operable," he says with a growl. He then walks to the door and examines it, looking for an access port. Silently he wonders what is keeping all the lifeforms in one place. Are they locked in? Seeking shelter from some toxic air or substance. Or did something go haywire.

"The two life forms above could be anything as those below. I hope it's not a Rancor, " he says as his head shudders causing his black and brown fur to go about as he relives some nasty memories. Looking at the door Kit sizes up the left door and tries to open it.

Vlad hears what Kit was saying and looks at him, "Do not talk about Rancors with me. I had to capture those things alive and bring them in. My boss was a sand trader yes but he traded in other goods as well." Vlad remembers those days and says very quickly "NOPE. Never again." Looking at the door Vlad will inspect it. This place just does not feel right.

Kitazza goes to the leftmost door, near the reception office, and tries to open it. He does not see an access port. It's a non-electronic access door. The door does not open. He puts a little force into it, but it appears locked.

Vlad takes a closer look and he thinks that it is mechanically shuttered. Perhaps with several bolts from the other side.

"I don't think we have to worry about a Rancor in here. The ceilings aren't big enough," Neesa will say. She goes to check the other door and it seems to be the same situation as the door Kit and Vlad are at. She pulls out some equipment and verifies that this door is bolted shut from the other side.

Harrison gets the message back, and he is somewhat satisfied that his message got through the storm, by the response he gets from Venlanna.

He listens to the group, as they talk about their fears about Rancors, while they attempt to gain entrance to the facility beyond. He then adds to Neesa's thoughts as he points to the dark blood spot on the floor "If there were Rancors on the other side of those doors, wouldn't you think they would have created a more gruesome scene?" he pauses for a moment as he considers the implications of the doors being bolted on the inside before adding "If the doors are secured on the inside, then wouldn't you think they are protecting themselves from something that came from out here?"

When Vlad hears that the door is locked from the side an alarm bell rings in his head. It being locked means that they were trying to stop others from going in and to keep what ever happened here to stay here.

Vlad will reach out and stop Kit from shooting the door. "We will need this door working. What ever is behind this door is in a cage right now and outside is other cage. We have the only thing that can get us off of this rock in the worse case scenario. Neesa can you open up this door? Kit, Zavi if you have anything that will let us see in the dark we may need it. Also keep your gun at the ready a Rancor may be too big for this but some of the other predators out there this is perfect for them."

Damn, now I really need my heavy blaster.

The doors are locked and an impediment to our protagonists moving deeper into the facility. Neesa has determined that both doors are mechanically bolted from the other side. The Wookie Kit goes to blast the door to the left of the entrance but Vlad stops him for a moment, asking if Neesa can open the door and keep it intact.

"I'll see what I can do. No promises, as these are simple doors without electronic controls."

Neesa spins her belt around and opens a pouch. She motions Pash over to hold her scanner equipment. Pash sets his gun down nearby and kneels next to the crouched Falleen woman. He leans in closer and breathes in deeply, taking in a waft of her perfume. Neesa catches him and gives him a "do you mind?" look then returns to her work.

After a few moments she sighs, then reaches over and grabs Pash's heavy blaster pistol. Before anyone can react, she fires twice, blasting the door where it was being held by the bolts. "Apparently not," she says, deadpan. "I think it would have been good to keep the door intact but it simply was not possible. Cutting it away would have given the same result and this was much more expedient," she explains to Vlad. She shrugs. "At least we can move forward."

Neesa hands the blaster back to Pash with a smile. Then she motions to the others that the way is open.

Anyone looking through the door sees a hallway. There is a door on the right a short distance away. And 3 smaller doors to the left. The hallway goes a distance and then ends but looks like it turns to the right. It difficult to see that far as the lights in the hallway are dim and flicker occasionally. The door is partially intact after being shot twice.

“I could have done that,” he growls impatiently at Vlad. As he sees Pash and Nessa exchange a smile.

Kitazza peers for through the gloom and sees a flickering light with more doors. He silently takes out his glow stick and steps through the door. He will walk to the first open door and peer inside.

Sigh. Well there goes the safe plan. Seeing that Kit brings out a glow stick makes Vlad happy that they have some light in the darkness but not enough light that would make him truly happy. If there are he will move up cautiously and look through the windows.

Hello folks, well, my time is a little freer now that the house is basically finished and mostly moved into. As such, I'd like to pick up again. In that vein, here is the next installment of the exploration of the infamous mine.

Neesa, being unable to open the doors which apparently were manually secured and without electronic locks, blasted open the door to the hallway. Kitazza, Vlad and Harrison step into the dim hall, now better illuminated by Kit's glowrod.

There are no windows in the doors or next to them. The three doors on the left are much smaller and one appears partially open now that you are closer to it. The door on the right is much like the door to this hall: featureless and without electronic closure or locking mechanism.
Kit wrote:Kitazza peers for through the gloom and sees a flickering light with more doors. He silently takes out his glow stick and steps through the door. He will walk to the first open door and peer inside.
Seeing that Harrison noticed an open door (the middle of the three on the left), Kitazza steps forward and pushes the door open. It does not want to seem to open easily as if something is blocking the door. Pulling and a shoving a couple times, suddenly an arm falls into the hallway! It is attached to a body. On first appearance, it is a human male and he is quite dead, based on the blaster wounds on his body.

Kitazza uses his shoulder and pushes several times on the door, which much to his surprise barely moves. “Seems like something is in the way,” he growls out, as his translator kicks in a few moments later. Putting more effort into pushing the door open results in a hand dropping out of the doorway. Stepping back quickly, he drops his bowcaster so that it’s pointing at the floor. He peers into the gloom for a moment then to the body and lowers himself, poking the body with his bowcaster. It is then he notices the unmistakable burn marks of blaster fire.
Harrison whispers near him. “What kind of uniform is wearing? Can you tell if he is one of the miners or perhaps someone that attacked the base?"
“I think its ok to talk normal. He can,t hear us anyway,” he says with a growl and smirk. “I’m not sure, you all look alike to me,” he says with a shrug as he examines the body more. ( Looking at uniform, ID cards and any keys he may have.)

As the door opens more, Kitazza will check out the room with a quick glance for any lifeforms then look at the body more for evidence.

Kiazza and Harrison begin to examine the dead body that they find, hidden behind one of the doors in the hall. It is the middle door of the three on the left side of the hallway.

He appears to be wearing overalls and work boots, likely one of the miners. He has been hit at least three times. Looking closer into the room, Kit can see that it is just a refresher that the body was unceremoniously dumped into. The other two doors nearby on this wall are also refreshers but they lack the dead body that is found in the middle one.

Looking closer, Kitazza finds an ID card that identifies him as one of the miners. He does not possess any keys however.

Just then the lights flicker for a moment again. Neesa steps forward a moment later and raises her hand. Her other hand unholsters her blaster pistol. She seems to be listening for something, then a moment later the rest of you hear what sounds like the echo of footfalls somewhere in the facility. It's difficult to tell whether they are getting closer or further away.

What does everyone do now?

"Well there is someone we could have talked to. but with the baster holes and him being dead puts a stop to that plan," Vlad Says this with a little bit of sting in his words. Final thought we had found a clue to what happened here on the dam rock, but the dead do speak plenty if you are willing to listen to them. Three blaster holes on the body. You would only need one shoot to kill a person of his size, so who ever or what ever did this is not very good or they wanted to make sure that the this person was dead. Not my style

When Vlad sees the lights flicker his body goes into alert mood. He brings his blaster rifle up and at the ready. When he see Neesa goes for her gun he turns his body to face the darkness of the hall way waiting for movement. When he hears the sound of foot steps a smile starts to come to his face. Finally something for me to kill.

Kitazza stays with the room with the body. He is quite curious he tries to see if the wounds were made by someone that knew what they were doing or someone inexperienced with a blaster. 'Why kill a miner? what was the benefit?" the wookie thinks to himself

Kitazza will take position near the door using the door way to cover as the others cover the hallway.

As the group finds a dead body stuffed into one of the refreshers, there is some inspection of it. It appears to be a miner as the body is dressed in work clothes and boots and has been shot 3 times. An ID card seems to identify him as one of the workers here.

Inspecting the body a bit more, Kit and Vlad are not able to make out whether the attacks were particularly precise. One wound is on the left shoulder, one roughly in the torso center and the third is on the rear upper right leg.

Suddenly the lights flicker. Neesa hears something and then the rest of you all do as well. There are footfalls echoing in the halls, but it is difficult to tell how far away and whether they are getting closer or further away. Everyone quickly takes cover in the doorways. Pash moves into the door opposite the refreshers and opens it slightly, enough to give himself cover there.

Waiting a few moments, the footsteps either fade or stop. It's hard to tell which. After a few more moments of listening carefully, you can hear a hissing sound and also a faint, rhythmic ticking coming from around the corner of the corridor somewhere.

What does everyone do now?

When Vlad hears the hissing sound he looks at Zavi and ask, "If you have a grenade through it so it goes around the coroner. Every body we are not the only living things in this building." Vlad looks on the ground for a rock. If he finds one and Zavi does not have a grenade he will throw it at the coroner.

Kitazza listens to the conversation between Harrison and Vlad. Before too long whomever is coming down that hallway will hear us whether they are friend or foe. Shaking his furry head, Kitazza grumbles out “Talk too much,” as he steps into the hallway. He will hug the wall to the corner and bring his bowcaster to bear on the hallway after poking his head out to see what may be making the noise or coming this way.

Vlad asks Zavi to ready a grenade, but Harrison thinks they should sneak up.

As Zavi readies his grenade, Neesa nods toward Harrison and is about to head quietly toward the corner. Kit loses his patience a moment sooner however and heads down the corridor with Neesa a short distance behind. Pash readies his weapon and Zavi has his grenade out, ready to toss it at a moment's notice.

Kit looks around the corner quickly, aiming his bowcaster down the hallway. He doesn't see anything in the corridor. Just in case, he turns back to take cover. Neesa approaches and crouches down near Kitazza. She pulls out a scanner and holds it around the corner near the floor. After a moment, she pulls it back and peeks around herself. She then signals everyone to move forward. "The coast appears clear," she says in a stage whisper.

Anyone looking round the corner sees a long corridor, wider than the one you are in. It has 6 doors on the left. On the right the hall opens to another smaller hallway across from the third door on the left. Past that there are 2 more doors on the right side, across from doors five and six on the left. And the wide hall ends at a door as well. The lights in the wide hall flicker and buzz and it looks like there is a dark shadow of some kind on the floor where the hall goes right.

After a few moments, you hear the ticking sound continue and it appears to be further down this corridor.

Now what?

Kitazza moves along the wall his heart rate rising as he hears the sound coming from the hallway. He pokes his big hairy head around the corner and sees nothing. Turning the corner he gets a better look as he brings his bowcaster to bear. Turning back Kit sees Nessa coming and shakes his head and growls electronically, “I don’t see anything.”
Neesa inspects the hallway as well coming to the same conclusion.

Seeing no visible thing making the sound, Kit’s eyes look to the walls, then the floor. His amber eyes gaze at the doors dark forms lingering in the shadows further down but nothing fires at them. Still keeping on guard he moves down the hallway towards the forms but stops halfway.

Kitazza looks to Nessa, “What kind of shsh* can you do on the Shsh ?” He growls as more ticking is heard though faintly echoing around the corridor. His eyes linger on the hallway then slowly drift about. Kitazza will try to hear if there is a pattern to the ticking.

“Is there a *shsh* ***** *shsh*?”he asks the others curiously as his translator goes on the fritz. He begins to growl and roar in his native tongue frustration showing on his face. Only static is heard from his translator. Fearing the static might give them away he simply turns off the device.

Seeing that Nessa and Kitazza move up and give the ok Vlad slowly moves to meet with them. Vlad tries to rack his brain for an idea on the noise for he may have heard it once before.(Check please) Still warry of the sound that is being made Vlad moves down the hall towards the first door. He will open it from the side so his back is on the wall.

This place is too dark and what lights are on make too many shadows that look like thy are moving about.
Vlad will keep his Blaster at the ready for any thing that moves.

Taking Kit's comment about talking to much to heart, he keeps quiet as the team sneaks up, after Neesa says the coast is clear. He will also keep looking back behind them to make sure they are not ambushed.

The group explores further down the hall, which turns to the right and offers many door options.

Vlad opens the first door on the left and he finds it is a personal sleeping quarters. It appears to be unoccupied. It contains a bunk bed, refresher unit and table.

Harrison keeps his eye out for any ambush to the rear, but that seems safe enough for the moment.

Just then a droid rolls into the hall from the side hallway. It spins around once and makes a whistling noise, then quickly races back down the side hall from whence it came. It happens so fast that no one has a chance to react before it slips out of sight again, although several now have their weapons out!
