Grondar:

"Ahh, your humility does you honor, lady Ivy," Grondar replies. He then turns to Kylie with a bow. "Again, my thanks. It is heartening to know we have a cook of such skill to keep us well fed in this task. You are truly a woman of many talents."

=====

The dwarf looks up at the large human warrior named Validar. "Yes, the crossbow is one of the things for which the priests of Berronar are known. Regrettably, not many non-dwarves have had much contact with our priesthood. Many of our order are also skilled with the battle axe, but I chose to stick with my mace and focus my training in other areas."

Kylie:

The conversation with Corley continues as they work on the horses. "Yes, Jallarzi's a good woman; it just took a while for us to get to know one another. I suspect I wasn't the easiest student she's worked with." Kylie finds it hard to make such an admission, admitting to her own foibles, but the man seems open and non-judgemental which makes it a little easier.

It appears that Corley mistook the intent of her question. "Ah. I'm afraid my question wasn't very clear. I was asking about the quality of the individual horses, rather than their purpose. I'm sure there must be riding horses that are little more than broken down nags and others that are finely-bred steeds of distinction. By saying that they 'are sufficient', does that indicate that they are of roughly average quality then? How does one go about judging the quality of a horse, anyway?" Perhaps she can at least learn a little something as they work...

=====

"I do," Kylie admits to Ivy. "It has been so very long since I have seen her. And we really don't know whether she's still alive or not.

"I'm sorry, that must be equally hard on you." Kylie finds that she can't imagine not knowing her parents. It seems Ivy's tale is as tragic as her own.

"You are right. I was thinking we could prepare some bread for tomorrow's ride. If we bank the fire sufficiently, we should be able to let it bake overnight and have it be ready come morning."

=====

Not sure how to deal with Grondar's effusive praise, Kylie just murmurs, "You're welcome," to the dwarf. She accepts other thanks with a bit more equanimity.

=====

Talking with Sherwood as they ride, Kylie shrugs. "Having never been outside of Elcadan before, I really have no idea what is out there in the rest of the world. Thus, it's hard to anticipate and make plans for my future."

“Now that you are old enough, perhaps you may attempt to locate your mother. And do not concern yourself; my life is what it is. I have not the power to change what has a occurred, but I can try to prevent it from happening to others.”

"Making bread sounds like a wonderful idea! Even better if it is warm."

"I would like that. Unfortunately, the elves would have to allow me into their lands for that, and they wouldn't before. They seem to be strongly disinclined to allow non-elves into the Elfholds. While I am half-elf, that may not be enough - it wasn't then."

VALIDAR -

The dwarf looks up at the large human warrior named Validar. "Yes, the crossbow is one of the things for which the priests of Berronar are known. Regrettably, not many non-dwarves have had much contact with our priesthood. Many of our order are also skilled with the battle axe, but I chose to stick with my mace and focus my training in other areas."

"I admit that I know very little of your priesthood, Grondar. I am pleased to hear that you have abilities with a ranged weapon. It will mean our gorups are as balanced as we originally planned and maybe even stronger due to the defensive capabilities your order possesses. Chareos looks to be more effective in the front line for now. A good suggestion." Validar will clap the dwarf on the shoulder lightly as they complete their plans for formations against the bandits.

"That is most peculiar. Granted I know very little of the affairs of our elven friends, but this does seem strange to deny a daughter from seeing her mother."

Ivy does not mention it aloud, but she at a later date and in private, she will ask the elves in the party about this. Lilia first, since as a woman she should have a stronger tie to children. Depending on what elf says, Ivy would then go to Laucian.

Corley:
The conversation with Corley continues as they work on the horses. "Yes, Jallarzi's a good woman; it just took a while for us to get to know one another. I suspect I wasn't the easiest student she's worked with." Kylie finds it hard to make such an admission, admitting to her own foibles, but the man seems open and non-judgmental which makes it a little easier.
Corley will let out a small laugh. “I suspect Lady Kylie that such a relationship exists between all students and teachers. When I was beginning my instruction my opinion of my instructors would not be fit to be air in mixed company!”
It appears that Corley mistook the intent of her question. "Ah. I'm afraid my question wasn't very clear. I was asking about the quality of the individual horses, rather than their purpose. I'm sure there must be riding horses that are little more than broken down nags and others that are finely bred steeds of distinction. By saying that they 'are sufficient', does that indicate that they are of roughly average quality then? How does one go about judging the quality of a horse, anyway?" Perhaps she can at least learn a little something as they work...
“Ah, my apologies then, Lady Kylie for my confusion. These are indeed quality mounts. Permit me to demonstrate.”

Moving closer, Lord Corley will use one of the riding horses for the purpose of his demonstration. “Observe the fine muscles on this one. He has been well tended to and fed. His skin is taunt, no flab to be found and his coat is bright and not drab. The eyes are clear and he is observant to what we are doing.”

“But here are the true telling points.” Corley bends down and gently lifts one of the legs up to show the full hoof. “No cracks and breaks in the hoofs. It has been trimmed, but not overly so. This will allow the mount to trot all day without discomfort.”

“Lastly, check the gums. Pink means the horse is healthy and free of disease. Treated well, this horse would serve its rider for many years.”

OOC: I have no idea if those are good points when it comes to horses, but it sounds good! :wink:

“The world is a much brighter place outside of the slums of Elcadan. The world is filled with things of wonder and terrors to make the bravest man’s blood run cold. Keep your wits about you and follow your heart and you’ll be fine.”

Grondar:

The dwarf smiles at Lord Validar's obvious pleasure at learning of Grondar's unexpected skills. The slap also makes it clear that Grondar is as stout and sturdy as dwarves are reputed to be. Additionally, the chain mail worn by the dwarf leaves it's own impressions on the large warrior's hand. [ :wink: ]

Kylie:

Ivy seems mystified by Kylie's experience. "As I understand it from my father, my mother was dying of a disease which elves have little resistance to. They were afraid that we would affect others, even though it was not known whether she got it from us or from elsewhere."

=====

Kylie pays close attention as Lord Corley reviews the markings of quality on the mounts that Sherwood provided. This seems good information to have, as Kylie may someday be in a situation of needing to purchase her own mount.

"Thank you. I'll try to remember what you have taught me here today.

"Excuse me. I should probably go see about our evening meal."

=====

Kylie gives Sherwood a strange look. "We shall see, shan't we?"

“Ah, I see,” Ivy says to Kylie’s explanation and then lets the matter drop. But secretly Ivy is concerned about this tale. Why did they not try having her mother cured at the Azrellian temple? From what Ivy does know, her own innate Cure Disease ability would cure even the most malignant magical aliments. This story doesn’t make sense to her, unless it was only given to cover something else? Just how to prove such a thing currently eludes Ivy. For now she will pocket away Kylie’s sorrowful tale with the intent of trying to do something to help at a later date.
