New Frontiers #4

Morning comes and the adventurers are off again. After everyone is out of the magical dwelling, Sherwood dispels the enchantment and the doorway vanishes back into nothingness. Mounting up, the adventurers are off down the small trail riding in a more organized formation.

The weather is similar to that of the previous day. The sole exception is that there are more clouds in the sky than the day before.

Travel continues onward with Laucian in the lead followed closely by Lilia. Next in the ranks are Corley, Ivy, Sherwood, and Grondar. Kylie and Chareos are next, followed by Sherra with Validar bringing up the rear.

A little over halfway through the day, the path leads the group into a heavier forested area than what they had been traveling in. Not too far along, Laucian suddenly raises his hand indicating that the party should stop, although most of you cannot see any potential danger.

The path ahead leads through a forested area. Several large boulders lie along or near the path before giving away to a more heavily wooded area. Laucian is about fifty feet before this area.

It may be a good idea to come up with a name for this particular adventuring band. :D

I’ll let Laucian explain his reasoning for bring the trek to a halt.

An ambush in the works?

Post by Validar »

VALIDAR -

Validar is keeping a close watch on the surrounding area, as he is the rear guard. Travelling deeper into Elcadan territory is more likely to bring an encounter with trouble.

When the group slows, Validar will command his warhorse, Havok, to stand his ground and slowly ride forward a slight bit to be alongside Sherra. From this point, they can just make out Laucian who has apparently called for everyone to stop. Validar can see the terrain become more difficult ahead. A perfect place for an ambush.

As Validar reaches for his great helm and slips it onto his head, he says to Sherra quietly, "The ambush may not come from ahead, but only be the point that stops us, while the true attack comes from our flanks. Unless we haven't been noticed yet, we must be vigilant. Ride forward quickly and quietly pass the word to everyone to be on guard against all possibilities."

Validar will then turn his mount around and watch the rear while keeping his eye to both flanks for a possible attack. He leaves his visor open for the moment to better see, ready to slam it down and engage the enemy should that be necessary. His lance is held firmly in the other hand and he shifts his grip anticipating combat.

Laucian

Awaking early this morning Laucian dons his armor and equipment, making sure he doesn't forget anything in the process. He takes a few morsels of food and seats himself at the table.
His thoughts run rampant in his head of what to expect in today's travel. As the others enter he we'll greet them and exchange in small talk if anyone is in the mood.

After cleaning up after himself he will head to the stables and get his horse ready for the day. He will wait outside for the others passing the time by walking among the trees within eyesight of the camp. Noting the clouds in the sky, he hopes for clear weather.

When everyone is accounted for Laucian will saddle up and head deeper into the woods. "Time to go to work," he says to himself as he heads into the bush. He scans the horizon for activity keeping his ears alert as well. Several forest creatures cross their path but nothing out of the ordinary.
As the sun rises overhead half concealed by cloud cover we enter a heavier forest. Laucian begins to notice the familiar sounds of the forest have become quieter. The sight of heavier forest with scattered boulders of various sizes comes into view. For a brief moment, He could've sworn he saw something or someone move. "Something doesn't seem right." he thinks to himself. He suddenly raises his fist, calling for a halt.

He makes a low audible shush to himself scanning both sides of the path. His elven eyes notice several footprints on the path ahead, but what bothers him is the fact that there are a few broken limbs near the path's edge. "Any animal could have done that," He thinks to himself, "but the diminishing sounds of the forest could mean anything."

Turning to Lilia and Corley, "We may have company, of what kind I am not sure. Pass the word to the others to be on their guard. There are some tracks up ahead with broken branches and limbs. For a moment I thought I saw movement among the trees but it is too far away to be certain."

Trusting his gut, "It may be wise to circle this area rather than go through it but if we have already been spotted it will do us no good, for we will have shadows that are not our own. We can come back for the tracks when we feel its reasonably safe."

Turning back in his saddle once again he will place his bow in his left hand and knock an arrow to it. He will begin to scan the tree line and boulders for activity as he slowly urges his mount forward. He will leave the path{which ever side has less boulders} and proceed forward unless anyone has any objections to his thinking.

OOC: He doesn't care for the terrain ahead and doesn't want to lead them into such an area where archers could pick them apart from both sides and have cover to do so. He would much rather circle one side and deal with what may come.

Kylie:

Unlike the previous morning, there is no need for Kylie to memorize any new spells, as she hadn't used any the previous day and doesn't feel the need to change those she does have prepared. Due to having little need for sleep, she's up quite early and has a hearty breakfast prepared and ready by time most others rise.

After eating and making sure that the dishes and leftovers are taken care of, she gathers her things and heads for the stables. Quickly saddling the horse and stowing her equipment, Kylie mounts up and is ready to ride with the others.

As usual, she has little to say and doesn't talk much with Chareos as they ride. Instead, she observes their surroundings casually, as she has not been this way before. The scenery is pleasant, as is the weather, leaving her in something of a good mood.

Kylie's rather oblivious of any danger, so it is a surprise as Laucian calls the column to a halt and describes the situation. Like the elf, she readies her bow and nocks an arrow, holding it in her left hand so as to keep her right free for handling the reins or spellcasting - should that become necessary. Circling the area sounds fine to her as she is not particularly inclined to combat if it can be avoided, so she nods when Laucian mentions doing so.

Grondar:

Once the others are all ready to go and join him outside the magical building, Grondar finds his place in the procession and does his best to keep up. As he becomes more proficient, he begins to chat with those around him - particularly Ivy, as she's a priest like himself.

"Ivy, I fear that my knowledge of other beliefs is somewhat lacking. Would you care to tell me more of Azrella, and any other dieties of which you are familiar?"

When Laucian signals a halt, Grondar is immediately alert, surveying the surroundings as the elf speaks. His vision is nowhere near as keen, yet he can't but agree that the area looks ripe for an ambush.

"If there is an ambush set here to waylay travellers, is that not what we are here for? Making the area safe for others is not only part of our mission - as I understand it - but our obligation to those less capable of defending themselves. I say we do what we must to weed out these miscreants." Quickly readying his crossbow, Grondar holds it in his right hand, with his left still upon the reigns.

a stop on the road...

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:

The morning comes quickly once more and Sherra joins the others in eating and preparing for another day's ride. She will greet each of the others with a nod or a small morning greeting, saving a smile or some small talk for Grondar, Corley and Validar. The rest she just has not had the chance to get to know very well yet and this morning, with a stronger possibility of danger looming, there just isn't too much time for such pleasantries.

The ride starts out easily enough, but soon Laucian spots something and the group halts immediately.
Sherra rides up, moving to the easiest side to progress up the column. She passes the word along with a barely-audible whisper. She does not retrieve her bow because in these close quarters of the forest all range and line-of-sight is gone unless an attack comes from one direction or another on the trail.

When she notices it looks like Laucian is going to ride off the trail, she will quickly turn her mare around and ride back to Validar and inform him of the brewing situation.

VALIDAR -

FIRST THING IN THE MORNING -

Validar rests easily and deeply and awakens early in the morning. At least one in his bunkroom is up and about, as Laucian's bunk is empty in the half-light of approaching dawn. He will head to the stables, passing by Kylie who is already working on the morning meal. "Good morning, Kylie. I trust you slept well. Your meal smells quite wonderful," he will say as he passes through the common room and to the stables. There he will prepare his warhorse, Havok, as well as his riding horse. Once they are saddled and ready, Validar will retrieve his armor and ready himself before breakfast there in the stables, so as to not wake anyone, but to be ready to ride as early as possible.

Validar is open to any small talk in the morning, taking time to talk to Sherra and Chareos and Ivy, as well as his good friend Corley (if he's not preoccupied with the ladies) and whomever else is talkative this morning.

ON THE FOREST TRAIL -

Sherra - When she notices it looks like Laucian is going to ride off the trail, she will quickly turn her mare around and ride back to Validar and inform him of the brewing situation.

Validar will continue to keep his horse pointed in the opposite direction as Sherra quickly explains what she's seen closer to the front. If Laucian is moving off trail it is only because of a trap or an ambush. Validar continues to quickly look to both sides aware that an attack could come from any direction. The trees here are somewhat sparser than up ahead, so we may be able to turn the tables on our foes.

With Sherra still at his side, Validar will lean in again and speak quietly. "I think we can surprise them ourselves, if you are with me. Let Chareos and Kylie know to follow us." Validar will move forward slowly and take both of his horses off the path to the opposite side Laucian is heading. Slowly he will move a few steps more off the path and further into the forest. All the while he will try to watch the rest of the party moving ahead and keep his eyes on the woods around them as well.

If the others are not attacked he will lead whoever is following him around the other direction, slowly picking up speed as they go. If there is an attack, then they will break into as hard of a gallop as they can to circle slightly and reach the combat, hopefully from the other side.

OOC: MAD has confirmed that the forest here is not impervious to sight or missile weapons, although missile fire will not be as accurate. We are in medium forest. Worse terrain is ahead. Keep those bows and spells ready!

When notified by Sherra of Validar's request for her to come along, she glances forward to Laucian, who doesn't seem aware of this change. However, it's not her problem, so she just shrugs and turns her horse to follow. Hopefully splitting up won't prove to be their downfall...

Kylie rides up behind Validar, then follows as he leads them off in the other direction.

Corley:

Rising with the others in the morning, Corley is pleasantly surprised to find the morning meal waiting for them. The young man eagerly digs in and seems to nearly be a bottomless pit. (He’s still young and growing!)

“A most hearty meal, Lady Kylie! It appears that spellcraft is not the only kind of magic you can work!”

Another day on the road. Lord Corley is most pleased to be riding near Ivy and will engage the Priestess in conversation as the opportunity presents itself. However, she seems engaged in a discussion of a theological nature with the dwarf Grondar.

Suddenly the elven guide brings the procession to a halt. Corley scans the road ahead but cannot see anything amiss. Casually, he takes up his lance and prepares to charge upon command.
Turning to Lilia and Corley, "We may have company, of what kind I am not sure. Pass the word to the others to be on their guard. There are some tracks up ahead with broken branches and limbs. For a moment I thought I saw movement among the trees but it is to far away to be certain.”

Trusting his gut, "It may be wise to circle this area rather than go through it but if we have already been spotted it will do use no good, for we will have shadows that are not our own, We can come back for the tracks when we feel its reasonably safe."
“Your eyes are much sharper than mine, friend ranger. Lead on when ready. I will move to protect your position should a threat appear.”

Turning to his riding companion, Corley will add, “Lady Ivy, when we move off the road ride so as to keep me between you and the potential ambush. My armor will help cover you from ranged attacks. Be ready to dismount and enter battle at a moments notice!”

As Kylie peels off to join the smaller group going the other direction, Grondar frowns. Noting that both archers have departed the main group, he realizes that his new tactical assignment has just been gutted.

Ivy:

Ivy is pleasantly surprised to discover that Kylie has the morning meal all prepared before she can even wake. Ivy will insist on helping with the clean up, as it is the least she can do.

Later, on the road:
"Ivy, I fear that my knowledge of other beliefs is somewhat lacking. Would you care to tell me more of Azrella, and any other deities of which you are familiar?"
“Of course, friend Grondar! I already covered much of Azrella. We function as midwives in the child birth process, we raise those children who have lost their parents, and seek to stem the tide of undead in the world.”

“There are many other patrons worshipped in these lands. Among the more popular ones with adventurers are Mystra, Heironeous, and Tymora. Lady Mystra is the source of all magic in the world and is thus popular among wizards. Her Priests frequently are skilled with both wizardry and clerical spells.”

“Lord Heironeous is the God of Justice and Honor. His paladins are among the strongest warriors for good in this world. Tymora is best known as Lady Luck, and many adventurers, particularly those who live by their wits and wiles, worship her.”

“Ehlonna is the patron to our friend Laucian. She is the Lady of the Forests and protector of all good creatures who dwell there. She is the Goddess of all Rangers. Silvanus is Mother Nature. It is she who created the world, giving all creatures a place to dwell. Many druids worship her. Istus is the embodiment of Fate itself. She has few priests, but no one wishes to raise her ire.”

“Then there are the various and vile gods of evil. As a Priestess of Azrella, my dire counterparts would include the fell followers of Orcus, the Demongod of the Undead, and Incalubos, the Bringer of Plagues and Disease. Hextor is the God of War and the destruction that comes from it. Lovitar is the Mistress of Pain and Suffering.”

Any further conversation comes to a halt when our band stops. Lord Corley indicates that I should keep him between myself and the potential ambush. Knowing that now is not the time to object to his protections, Ivy will simply nod in agreement. She’ll tightly grasp her staff and be ready to engage in battle should it come to that.

Lilia:

The Elf Maiden has been mostly quiet since the ‘conversation’ with Sherwood. Is this what the Clan Elder meant by Lilia going out into the human world and broadening her horizons? Did even her own clan think that Lilia was guilty of the things Sherwood spoke? That thought shook her deeply.

While resting in the magical dwelling, Lilia retired early and curled up in the crude bunk to read more of her book. The title of the tome couldn’t help make her pause. “The Folly of Human Mages”. Lilia couldn’t help but wonder if was the human mages who were at fault or was it the author? Did Sage Sythree also look down upon humans who dabbled in magic? Did his prejudices color his texts and that in turn formed Lilia’s opinions? The Elf Maiden couldn’t be sure.

Lilia recalled the brief conversation she had with the half-elf Kylie about the book. It seemed bring a scowl to her face. Did even she see what Lilia could not? Lilia considered herself something of an expert on magic and mages. But what kind of expert would she be if her information were biased? Lilia promised herself to acquire tomes offering other points of view than the elven one she had studied thus far. Read multiple opinions before blindly deciding that only one was correct. Lilia would make a point to speak to Sherwood at greater length on the subject during the rest period tomorrow evening.

Lilia’s thoughts are interrupted by her clansman’s bring the expedition to a sudden stop.

Lilia silently curses to herself for not paying better attention to what was going on around her. Drawing her shortbow, Lilia prepares to fire an arrow.

“Lead on, clansman. I shall follow.”
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

The dwarf listens closely as Ivy talks about the various gods of which she is familiar. Some he has heard of previously; others are entirely new to his understanding.

"Many of those you name, Ivy, are familiar to me. On the other hand, Orcus, Tymora and Ehlonna were clearly not a part of my training. It is possible that they have other aspects within the dwarven teachings. I shall probably have other questions for you regarding the details of their worship and priesthoods."

Corley's response leaves him with some confusion, though he appreciates the sentiment. "I doubt I would fight well standing upon this beast which I am just learning to ride. Sherra keeps an eye on the rest of the group as Laucian begins to lead them off the trail. She still does not ready her bow knowing if we break into full gallop or attempt to shoot through the forest to where the rest of the group is, too many mishaps could occur, and she is not going to tempt Tymora in that fashion. Besides there are several other surprises at my disposal she thinks.

Post Continued:

The Journey to Twin Forks has come to a sudden halt. Laucian has spotted something suspicious up head in the road. The path the adventurers had been riding on is leading into an area where the forest grows denser. Numerous boulders lie along the side of the road offering cover for potential ambushers.

The precession halts for nearly thirty seconds while options are reviewed and decisions are made. Laucian turns his horse off the path in an attempt to circle around this area. Corley, Lilia, Ivy, and Grondar follow moving off the road to the left.

Behind them, Validar directs Sherra, Chareos, and Kylie to circle around to the opposite side of Laucian’s group. They comply and leave of the path. Sherwood notes both groups separating and slowly urges his own mount forward, continuing to watch for trouble.

Suddenly, the telltale sound of arrows in flight is heard! The missiles whoosh in and around Laucian’s group, but none of them find a target. Trees intercept a few arrows before they even getting close to striking.

This is rapidly followed up with movement in and around the boulders. Men who had been concealed along the side of the road erupt from their hiding places and run towards Laucian’s group. There appears to be half of dozen men wearing leather armor and brandishing weapons. Screams and cries of battle come from them as they rush forward.

GM Notes:

There were at least a dozen or so arrows fired at Laucian’s group. The area is forested and the trees do provide some measure of protection against ranged attacks that the trail would not.

None of the men rushing to attack appears to be carrying a bow. They were either concealed out of sight behind rocks and trees, or were covered with leaves. They carry a variety of weapons, including short swords, spears, and daggers.

Validar’s group would have noted the charging men. The men all came from Laucian’s side of the road.

The combination of forest with large rocks makes the use of lances iffy. There just aren’t any long straightaways off of the riding trial.

Sherra would note that the advancing men do resemble the same ones who attacked her on her journey to Pyris.

Now what?

As soon as the arrows are heard, Grondar wrestles his pony to a stop. Immediately, he dismounts on the side toward the attackers to the best of his ability using one hand, the other still holding his crossbow. Turning, he lines up a shot at the nearest attacker.

Once the shot is away, he drops the crossbow and begins to stride forward, readying his shield and mace as he goes. Grondar will move to interpose himself between the onrushing attackers and the elven mage Lilia. If time allows before the attackers reach him, he will call upon the powers of his deity to Bless as many of his companions as possible.

“Once I was old enough, helping out around the orphanage was encouraged. Thus, I am most accustomed to assisting in some of the more mundane day to day tasks.”
“I would suggest speaking to Laucian for more details on Ehlonna, since he serves her. I do know more about Orcus of the three you mention since he is directly opposed to the goals of Azrella. He is not a true god, but instead a vile demon having risen to such of lofty position. He dwells in the abyss in a palace made of grounded bone and is served by undead and demons. His followers use a goat’s head as a symbol for Orcus and make blood sacrifices in his dark name.”

When the sound of arrows fills the air, Ivy inadvertently flinches at the noise. Looking around she is relieved to see that no one was injured in the surprise attack. “Blue Lady be praised!”

Seeing men rushing to attack, Ivy will slip off of her horse and grab her quarterstaff. The weapon raised, Ivy waits for an opponent to come her way.

"And yes, I did sleep well. And you?"

"That is very important out on campaign, Kylie. I slept well myself. I always seem to manage to rest deeply when the area is secure."

BACK TO THE PRESENT -

Validar will hold onto his lance, unless it gets too tight to maneuver quickly or if they get close to combat. Then he will drop his lace and pull his magick blade from its scabbard. Validar will attempt to lead his sub-group to the archers. As they get closer, they should see the bowmen, or they may fire again. If they are completely unable to find the archers, then attack the close combat bandits, otherwise, we will be focusing on the dozen or so archers that tried to attack us. "Find those archers and remove them," Validar will call back to his group. Hopefully, the bandits did not even see us split off and have their entire focus on the front of our column. If we can catch them surprised, so much the better.

Lilia:

When the familiar sound of arrows in flight reaches Lilia’s ears, she instinctively ducks down making herself a smaller target. Once the arrows have passed, she’ll bring her mount to a stop and then fire on the first enemy target that she spots.

Lilia’s next actions will depend upon just how close the approaching bandits are. If she feels they are far enough away, she’ll cast a Web spell using the numerous trees in the area to provide a strong anchor. She’ll only cast the spell if she can get half of the attackers.

If there is not enough time, she’ll just fire another arrow before dismounting.

Lilia is surprised to see the dwarf rushing to shield her from the advancing bandits. She never would have considered him doing such a thing before.

If the dwarf is successful in keeping bandits away from Lilia, she will continue to use her bow to pick off attackers. If they seem to be under control, Lilia will send a Sleep spell off in the direction where the enemy archers seem to be firing from. Best guess on the placement of the spell.

Otherwise, she’ll use her shortsword for hand-to-hand combat.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Entering the Forest

Grondar:

This demigod named Orcus sounds entirely vile, and Grondar commits what Ivy tells him to memory. He will be sure to oppose that one and his servants as the opportunity presents itself.

"Thank you, Ivy. I will do as you suggest, as the circumstances permit."

=====

Hearing Corley's shout, Grondar is troubled. "Corley! Try not to kill them if you can help it. Many bandits are merely desperate, and not truly irredeemable."

Entering the Forest

Post by Kylie »

Kylie:

Receiving her instructions from Validar, Kylie focusses on attempting to locate the archers which fired at their comrades. She will weave from side to side, while generally making her way forward somewhat behind Validar. Her eyes search every bush and rock for some sign of the archers.

If she finds a target, she will stop her horse, take aim and fire. Should there be several together, she'll attempt to cover them in the sticky strands of a Web.

Sherra:

Knowing that riding an untested mount into combat could prove fatal, Sherra rides up with Validar until she sees the advancing enemies closing in on the other half of the group. Then she will bring her horse to a halt, grab her bow and a quiver of arrows and, standing up on the saddle, hoist herself up into a suitable tree. Once up there, she will climb until reaching a good height to rain down death on the advancing bandits or, more importantly and if she can spot them from up here, the archers. Sherra will begin to fire arrows at the enemy archers or, failing to find them, at any bandits that are attempting to sneak behind one of our group or charging the flanks.

Not quite the masts and rigging of a fine ship, but climbing these branches do bring about some memories. Tymora guide my aim Sherra thinks as she climbs upward.

Chareos

Chareos wakes a little bit later than he wanted to, "Ugh, your going to be late for your own funeral if you don't shape up," he thinks to himself while getting ready for the morning's ride. He will load up his plate and begin to swallow it with out chewing as if he were trying to make up time that was lost. Garbling chewing "This is a fine meal,'" he spirts out. After breakfast he will gather plates and help cleaning up.

Upon gathering his mount and gear he can be seen taking out a vibrant purple prism and releasing it into the air, where it hovers about his person.

When they hit the trail Kylie seems to be enjoying the scenery and doesn't seem to want to talk that much. Which is fine with him. He is content to hum songs to himself being watchful of his surroundings. Laucian soon calls for a stop, Chareos begins to look around as to find the source of Laucian's reasoning. Chareos eyes fall upon a forest riddled with boulders. Looks ripe for an ambush he thinks to himself soon word passes down the line to be ready. And Sherra rides along us saying the same.
After a few moments Laucian turns off the path as does Validar in the opposite direction.

For a few moments he wonders who to follow. He turns and follows Validar and the others. A few moments after the sound of Arrows filling the air is heard, some finding trees others landing harmlessly.

Chareos will follow Validar and be ready with spell or staff.
"Find those archers and remove them." Validar shouts.

" It will Be my pleasure," He replies

When they reach the archers he will cast sleep upon them and then if any of them are still awake he will cast color spray. Then move in amongst them and stay along Validar's Flanks if he is able. In the case that the archers flee he will cast magic missiles upon those who run.

Laucian

As he is leading his group off the path he begins to watch his surroundings. When the Sounds of arrows begin to fill the air, Laucian lowers himself making himself less a target.

When War cries are heard, Laucian looks for their source, quickly finding them. Six or so men have come from their hiding places amongst the boulders and brush.

Quickly dismounting Starfire and sending him away, He will take aim at the approaching force. After the first arrow is spent he will call upon the powers of Ehlonna and begin to cast entangle upon the approaching force "Let them come to us!", he shouts. If by then they are in hand to hand range he will forgo his bow and draw his sword and dagger, if not he will remain with bow til that time and continue peppering them with arrows. Upon entering hand to hand battle "May Your Blade chip and shatter," He bellows.
