New Kingdoms #9

Post by GM Fenrir »

The Makkee farm has become a bustle of activity after the arrival of Knight-Captain Maletar and a contingent of his troops. After some tense moments, the group has shared what they know about what happened at the farm while the captain has shared information as well regarding their involvement. It would seem a chance encounter has brought everyone together to investigate the attack and much deeper plot behind all of it.
“He doesn’t.” Kealyn says simply with a slight smirk, “He is only second in command. Though he resides within the theives’ guild.” He admits freely knowing full well he may be dragged off to a cell for reveiling such information. “I was learning the trade when I over heard Buchard speaking of this plot. He didn’t know I was there until he saw me,andwhen he did he swore to kill me and everyone I know.So I fled the guild’s reach, in the hopes that they would leave my loved one’s alone and I could warn those who could do something about it.”

“I see. Have any other farms been attacked?” the thief mage askes politely.

“Mock me if you will, but with out this knowledge I doubt you or any of the Militia would know of this attempt until you were overwhelmed or have a sword in your gullet.
Kaelyn has revealed more interesting news as well as coming clean with his connection to Buchard. Despite the perceived mocking to the thief, the captain does seem to take a keen interest in the possibility of an invasion fleet arriving on the shores of Maletar as well as sharing that the Queen has been targeted for assassination in the past. “There was only one farm the mercenaries spoke about an attack upon,” the captain also provides.
She looks up at Mayla. "I'm switching to my own horse. Since it seems we are all returning to Dormare, it's up to you who you want to ride with." If Mayla want to switch mounts, Butternut will help her down before strolling over to Springheel and mounting him.
While the group goes and retrieves their horses from the watchful lancers, Mayla makes it clear that although she enjoyed riding on Thunder, she doesn’t want to be apart from Butternut. “Can I ride with you?” she asks the Halfling as she moves to slide off Stephanie’s impressive horse.
Erizhi thinks about what she may know of the Earth Goddess he mentions (I.e. anything from Ancient History or Religion that she might have already learned?). "Well met," the priestess will respond. "I am Erizhetiana of the House Iltani from Lotan." She considers his question for a moment. "Ishtar is also the Goddess of Love, as well as the Goddess of War. And as you say, 'some choose, and some are chosen'. I was born with blue eyes, which is uncommon for those of our kingdom. The night of my birth, the constellation of the Lion was dominant in the night sky. Blue is the color of Ishtar and the lion is her patron animal. My father says that as I cried my first, a streak shot through that constellation and he considered all this a sign that I was destined, in his words - 'chosen', to become a part of the Ishtar temple."
Erizhi has struck up a conversation with a fellow priest, one Dareos Cooke of Maletar. Although their religions and beliefs seem drastically different they have hit a harmonious cord. As Erizhi thinks about what she might know of this Ebon Lady, Dareos continues their conversation as they mount up. “Ah, so this Ishtar is much like our own Inanna then,” he says thoughtfully. “It sounds like your birth was marked by very potent signs. I can see now where you get your persona from. Mine are much humbler beginnings, for I did not even plan to become a priest. Even from a young age though, the earth always seemed to speak to me, if that makes any sense. It was much later I understood the connections of it all.”

GM Notes: check your PM Erizhi

The group begins to move out. The party can intermingle with the column however they wish. At the moment the lancers are riding point while the burly soldier has been given charge of the Immaterian who is having to run to keep up. The elven scouts are not with the main group but can not be seen off the road either, so it is unclear whether they are even present. The captain is up near the front where the man being groomed for promotion also rides. The youngest of the soldiers is about mid-column alone while the priest continues to ride with Erizhi should she desire to talk further.

The farm is barely out of sight when riders approach the group from the direction of the village. Sir Rovach easily recognizes the village’s constable, Gorvan. He is armored in his banded mail and upon the grey dapple the paladin had seen outside his office. With him are five others that can only be assumed to be of the militia, dressed in leather armor. Two are in a wagon being drawn by a pair of draft horses. All of them look grim.

“Ah, perfect timing as always,” Captain Maletar says upon seeing the men. “The area is yours, Constable. These adventurers had taken care of the hard work. As always, you have amazing foresight in these matters.” Hardly pausing for breath, the captain continues, “They captured one prisoner and we are escorting him, and these adventurers, back to the village straight away. You should have no complications regarding your detail.”

Gorvan simply sits through the words, his eyes finding Sir Rovach and sending the paladin a courteous nod. Once it’s clear the captain is done, Gorvan addresses his men, “Alright then, you heard our captain. Let’s get this grim business behind us and give those poor souls a proper burial.”

Captain Maletar surrenders only the barest necessity of road for the wagon to pass by on. Anyone glancing into the bed of the wagon can see there is a tarp over most of it but there appears to be tools and lumber inside. A large cooking pot sits between the men on the wagon’s front bench.

Once the road is again his, Captain Maletar’s white charger starts into a canter. The fine specimen has a near-black star and strip pattern starting from between its eyes and ending quite near its muzzle. The rest of his men join in the canter easily without a word needed to be spoken.

When he does, he will state "I'm assuming this isn't just an honor guard escort Captain, and that there is somewhere or someone specific we are going to once we reach the village. Would you be so kind to let us know where specifically we are being led to?"

Erizhetiana Iltani of Lotan -

Captain Tamberlaine doesn't seem to even acknowledge her further through the conversation and that seems to be fine with the priestess. She is ready to get on their way. She found it odd that they were going to leave the bodies where they lay, but this was completely in the hands of the Captain now.

At least the Captain's adjutant, Dareos - priest of the Maletar Earth Goddess, was not only kind and respectful, but a possible fount of information and learning. Every bit of information could prove vital in some way as she became more accustomed to her time here in Maletar.

Eri tries to remember what she had read about the deity known as Ninhursag. There was little to touch on and as much hyberbole as not. "I remember a brief note about the 'Lady of the Mountain' and a symbol like an omega. However, I can cannot say that I know much about your patron. I would be pleased to learn whatever you cared to share about your tenants and beliefs and rituals."

"Truly," she continued, "Inanna and Ishtar have many similaries from my readings, from personality to association with the lion to their spheres of control to their sometimes unpredictability caused by the constant struggle between the sphere of love and that of war. Although some have said they are the same thing!" She says this last with a little laugh.

"As for whether it was indeed a sign, while i was there, I cannot remember anything of the event," she says with a sly smile. "I do believe that I am in Ishtar's temple for a reason, if i may be so bold. Whether that reason has any serious import remains to be learned." She considers for a moment. Certainly she cannot imagine what might be so important about this assignment here and now.

"So please, tell me more about the pantheon of Maletar. I would so wish the ride to pass by quickly and anything you can do to distract me from the tedium of it, would please me to no end," she says, looking expectantly.

While the fate of the Makkees saddens us all, I do hope to have the opportunity to help you and your people again in the future."
It looks like Gorvan has had a long day, still he manages a smile and takes the offered hand. “It’s you we must thank,” he says. “None of us had any way of knowing how cruel this has all become.”

The constable spots the Makkee girl riding with Butternut. “At least the tragedy is not absolute,” he says more to himself than anyone else. With a parting farewell to the paladin, Gorvan moves on with his men.
Sir Rovach then continues riding. making his way up to the Captain at the head of the group. He will attempt to ride up next to him and get his attention. When he does, he will state "I'm assuming this isn't just an honor guard escort Captain, and that there is somewhere or someone specific we are going to once we reach the village. Would you be so kind to let us know where specifically we are being led to?"
“In that you are quite correct, Paladin,” Captain Maletar replies. “We are all going to the Inn of the Smiling Dryad for some rest and refreshment. It has been a long day for us all. There will be little else for us to do upon that hour anyway while we wait for the meeting to get underway,” he adds cryptically.

Erizhi -
Eri tries to remember what she had read about the deity known as Ninhursag. There was little to touch on and as much hyberbole as not. "I remember a brief note about the 'Lady of the Mountain' and a symbol like an omega. However, I can cannot say that I know much about your patron. I would be pleased to learn whatever you cared to share about your tenants and beliefs and rituals."
“Hmmpphh,” Dareos answers. “I see that the teachings there are hardly broad in scope are they?” he inquires. “Still, she is a minor power in the grand scheme of things as broad as the whole of the universe, but her ways have been good for me. The diamond is her symbol, at least out here,” he adds, indicating his holy symbol.

“Our beliefs are quite simple: All is of the earth, treat it well for it shall be your eternal home one day.” Dareos explains. “Most of the common folk pray during the spring for good earth for their crops. Miners tend to revere her as well in the hopes of striking a mother lode.”
“Indeed they are,” Dareos replies thoughtfully. “It is a passionate path full of great perils and wondrous rewards. The lion is quite majestic indeed, and aptly chosen. I find the mole to be quite interesting and more than a little entertaining myself,” he adds with some mirth.
“We all have our duties to perform,” Dareos says patiently. “There is importance in the smallest of things. A simple conversation can turn into a marvelous event, so too can seemingly simple service in a temple lead to a life of exploration and adventure.”
"So please, tell me more about the pantheon of Maletar. I would so wish the ride to pass by quickly and anything you can do to distract me from the tedium of it, would please me to no end," she says, looking expectantly.
Dareos chuckles, “Well hopefully you’ll do us more justice in your retelling than those books you have currently. So let’s see, where to best begin...”

Butternut:
While the group goes and retrieves their horses from the watchful lancers, Mayla makes it clear that although she enjoyed riding on Thunder, she doesn’t want to be apart from Butternut. “Can I ride with you?” she asks the Halfling as she moves to slide off Stephanie’s impressive horse.
"Certainly," Butternut replies, trying to sound cheerful. This has been a strange and foreboding day and the halfling has much to think about. She helps Mayla down off of Thunder, leads her over to Springheel, introduces her to the pony, then helps her up. Climbing up behind the girl, she falls into the group as near the front as the soldiers seem willing to allow her to be.

They are barely started down the road, they come upon riders from the direction of town. At first, Butternut doesn't think much about it, but the name Gorvan is mentioned - a name she recognises from the past. Looking up, it isn't hard to figure out which one they are referring to, though he appears older than she remembers. Of course, humans seem to age faster then halflings, but still it seems the stresses of his position have worn on him more than most. While Butternut didn't have a lot of cause to interact with the man, he was prominent enough that he was known to her. Still, it is good to see a familiar face.

The discussions are brief, then they continue on. Still, it might be worth stopping in and talking with him once things have settled down.

As they ride back toward Dormare, Butternut will point out and explain to Mayla any animal signs or tracks she might spot from her horse. Never too early to start learning, and perhaps it will give the girl something to think about besides the horrors of the past few days.

Back to the Smiling Dryad? Sir Rovach is a little surprised to hear this. While he remembers fondly the ale served to him by the kind innkeeper, brewed by the innkeeper himself with that extra bit of hops Sir Rovach does prefer, the inn seems kind of out of place for such a procession no matter how enjoyable a place it might be. Here we are, thinks Sir Rovach, being escorted by what appears to me to be members of the country's army. They have been ordered, by someone with authority to do so, to escort us to a meeting......at the inn? Wouldn't anyone with any proper authority over these knights want to meet in a proper setting? Unless they don't have anywhere else local to meet....or don't want this meeting to be official. Sir Rovach, his curiosity piqued, wonders about this but decides to keep his thoughts silent for the moment. While he could be totally wrong in his assessment and just over assuming too much, it's obvious the Captain is being evasive on purpose. Sir Rovach will leave their destination, and immediate fate, to the will of Anu for now.

"Very well Captain" says Sir Rovach to Captain Maletar. "I look forward to our arrival at that fine establishment." With this, Sir Rovach will continue riding with the company until they reach their destination.

Erizhetiana Iltani of Lotan -

A discussion ensues between the priests as the group proceeds back to Dormare and the Inn which is Erizhi's home for the immediate future. Dareos began to explain about his patron, the Earth Goddess - Ninhursag.

"I see," she says, taking in the information and committing it to memory. "Perhaps there are teachings of which I have not yet partaken," she says diplomatically. In our pantheon, En'lil is given supplication for a bountiful harvest, but Damkina, mother or Marduk, is the Earth Mother. Neither of them have as large a following as some of the more powerful gods within Immater," she will explain.

In comparing Ishatr and Inanna, Dareos responds. “Indeed they are,” Dareos replies thoughtfully. “It is a passionate path full of great perils and wondrous rewards. The lion is quite majestic indeed, and aptly chosen. I find the mole to be quite interesting and more than a little entertaining myself,” he adds with some mirth.

The priestess smiles appreciatively, as he begins his statement, until he reaches the part about moles. Erizhi raises her eyebrow at this. 'Did he really say moles', she thought to herself. "I cannot say I have ever given the creature much thought, to be honest," she finally answers.

“We all have our duties to perform,” Dareos says patiently. “There is importance in the smallest of things. A simple conversation can turn into a marvelous event, so too can seemingly simple service in a temple lead to a life of exploration and adventure.”

"Yes, and sometimes there is an importance that we do not understand. And sometimes there is no importance, just circumstance. Unfortunately, we too often find the answer after the 'event' has finished." She thinks about his words for a moment more and how they may apply to her. "Exploration and adventure. I have always thought that life should be an adventure. Whether at home or out in the world, a dull and uneventful life seems like such a waste of opportunity."

"And so how did a follower of your Earth goddess, the patron of farmers and miners, find himself in the military and as adjutant to our fine Captain there?"

Erizhi smiles. "I will certainly do my best, good sir," she says honestly. "Please continue!"

Butternut -
As they ride back toward Dormare, Butternut will point out and explain to Mayla any animal signs or tracks she might spot from her horse. Never too early to start learning, and perhaps it will give the girl something to think about besides the horrors of the past few days.
Butternut is able to ride up as close to the front as she would like to. The soldiers don’t pay her, or any of the rest of the group, any mind since everyone is riding along like they are supposed to. They keep to themselves unless one or more of the group interacts with them.

There aren’t many tracks that can be seen from the road, but there are other signs that Butternut can easily point out - marks on the bark of a tree where a cervid stopped to rub their antlers against it or broken foliage where an animal darted away from a sudden noise or a predator. Mayla takes all of it in with a keen interest.

Sir Rovach -
"Very well Captain" says Sir Rovach to Captain Maletar. "I look forward to our arrival at that fine establishment." With this, Sir Rovach will continue riding with the company until they reach their destination.
Captain Maletar doesn’t reply to Sir Rovach and instead keeps his eyes roaming while listening to the occasional remark or commentary from his riding companion.

Erizhi -
"I see," she says, taking in the information and committing it to memory.
“Hmm,interesting,” Dareos ponders aloud. “Enlil is the God of War and Air in our pantheon. Only a slight variance to the pronunciation there. I have not heard of the other, especially as a mother to Marduk? Of course I have heard that Marduk is a bald, red giant with four eyes and can breathe fire,” he says with a chuckle. “Things often get lost in translation.”
"I cannot say I have ever given the creature much thought, to be honest," she finally answers.
Dareos lets out a rolling belly laugh, earning him glances from the nearby soldiers, but he ignores them. “No, I don’t imagine you would,” he says. “The mole is revered by Nin-Hursag so I find myself studying them when I can to try to unlock the secrets of the universe.”
Dareos simply nods in agreement, or let’s out a “mmhmm” at parts of Erizhi’s reply, but adds nothing further.
"And so how did a follower of your Earth goddess, the patron of farmers and miners, find himself in the military and as adjutant to our fine Captain there?"
“I was in the militia at a young age,” Dareos explains. “There was little else then to do unless I wanted to become a farmer or a fisherman. Of course I did both of those as well. It wasn’t until the choosing by Nin-Hursag did I find my real direction.”

“Once my apprenticeship was complete, I often found myself on the road with soldiers such as these as I traveled to the various villages,” he indicates the soldiers around him as he talks. “Many of them were still simple folk who had joined the military in hopes to better their lives. So I often passed the time much like we are doing now. Eventually one of the commanders had heard about my bringing the faith to his men and the villagers and I was offered a position to help defend the roads I was already spending so much time on. It's only recently that I have begun riding with the Captain and, as his only priest available in the unit at the moment, he defers to me on certain things.”
Erizhi smiles. "I will certainly do my best, good sir," she says honestly. "Please continue!"
“Well, we’ve already spoken about Inanna and Nin-Hursag. As I mentioned before, Enlil is the chief deity of our pantheon. Let’s see, Enki oversees the rivers and the oceans, and so our sailors and fishermen revere him. Ki is very popular among our druids and it is also said the elves worship her as well, especially the wood elves. Nanna-Sin is our God of the Moon while Utu is our Sun God. That’s the whole of the pantheon. Oh, there's some minor powers one may find here and there the further you get away from a town or village, but mostly they have been absorbed into simply worshipping a more prominent deity.”

After a moment, Dareos adds, “Maletar generally only worships the major powers where our Barivain neighbors revere all of the gods I spoke briefly of. There is a lot of elven influence in Maletar as well, so many worship those deities, especially the half-elves and those of full elven birth that choose to reside in our borders.”

Erizhi continues her talk with the Maletarian priest of Ninhursag.

Erizhi considers his words. "So you have two gods which both have domain over the sphere of War, interesting." She thinks about her own pantheon and the example that Ramman has spheres completely covered by Marduk, who in turn has some power in areas ruled by Anu. She had considered this before and wondered again about the depths of this question. She has to laugh though at the description of Marduk. "That is almost humorous. Perhaps Druaga could be who you are referring to?"

"'Secrets of the Universe'? From a mole?" she thinks. She just smiles as respectfully as she can, but likely the confusion is still evident on her face.

Dareos then goes on to explain his connection to the military and also more details about his pantheon and the comparison of their worship to those people of Barivain. She listens carefully, trying to commit as much information as possible to memory. She considers that with two war gods that the Maletarians might be rather martial in general. Something to consider for her report.

"And why do you think it is that there is a difference between Maletar and Barivain regarding who they worship and why? And how did you come to share the same pantheon anyway?"

While most of the group passes the ride back to the village in near-silence, Erizhi has found herself engrossed in conversation with the priest Dareos of the Maletar military.
She has to laugh though at the description of Marduk. "That is almost humorous. Perhaps Druaga could be who you are referring to?"
“Of that I do not know,” Dareos replies.
"'Secrets of the Universe'? From a mole?" she thinks. She just smiles as respectfully as she can, but likely the confusion is still evident on her face.
As if reading her mind, the priest offers, “Oh and why not? I doubt such answers sit in some tome waiting to be found. More likely to be revealed by a simpler creature not biased or jaded by life or circumstance.”
"And why do you think it is that there is a difference between Maletar and Barivain regarding who they worship and why? And how did you come to share the same pantheon anyway?"
“Well most certainly the elven influence for one,” Dareos replies after some thought. “The Barivains do not have the close ties with elves like us here in Maletar. That alone has caused many to almost blend the two pantheons to better fit their lives, especially those of both human and elf heritage. Besides that though, the two peoples are not that different. You will find many similarities between the two, and it is my belief that were they not forcibly divided then they would all be under one banner even now.”

~ ~ ~

Day eventually begins to make way for night, and while the pace of the troupe waxes and wanes, there is little that one could call a break. A few moments to let the horses drink offer little in ways to stretch one’s legs, let alone set up a camp or eat a proper meal. Once it becomes too dark to safely see while riding, lanterns are brought out and lit in the front and rear of the procession.

At some point in the journey, both elf scouts, one male and one female, are not there one minute and the next are riding within the column. By this point Mayla has fallen asleep against Butternut, so when Vaelos rides up next to the Halfling, he sees the Makkee girl is asleep and remains quiet so as not to startle or disturb her. The elf smiles a greeting to Butternut and will ride alongside her for as long as she wishes the company.

~ ~ ~

Eventually lights can be seen through the trees and the distant sound of music, laughter and voices filters out even this far. It won’t be much longer and everyone will be able to relax at the inn and await whatever meeting is still planned for the night.

Something else is then picked out from the faint noises competing with it and it sounds like sobbing. As the column rounds a bend, there is a young man sitting beside the road. Erizhi caught a glimpse of this youth leaving the inn yesterday with two others who had removed a post from the Heroes’ Board. Sir Rovach and Kaelyn can also place him outside of the inn and seemingly had been in quite the hurry. Now he sits, with a crumpled piece of parchment balled up in one dirty hand. His clothes are caked with dirt and what might be blood? Tears have left clean streaks on his filthy face. He looks up, first startled and then, upon seeing the finery of the soldiers of Maletar, his eyes manage a hopeful and pleading look at the same time.

None of the soldiers pay the youth any mind and continue riding. Vaelos looks concerned at the state of the youth, but he does not stop. The priest Dareos looks much more closely at the young man, his eyes roving, looking for signs of injury most likely. He says something under his breath but also continues riding. Realizing no one is going to help him, the youth buries his head in his hands and resumes sobbing.

Sir Rovach
Something else is then picked out from the faint noises competing with it and it sounds like sobbing. As the column rounds a bend, there is a young man sitting beside the road. Sir Rovach ..can ..place him outside of the inn and seemingly had been in quite the hurry.

As Sir Rovach rides ever closer towards Dormare with his companions, the Captain, and the other soldiers he hears the sound of crying coming from up ahead. As they come around a bend he sees a young man, perhaps even still a boy, sitting beside the road. He looks sort of familar to Sir Rovach. Didn't he see him leaving the Inn yesterday in a hurry? However, these thoughts leave him as he see's the state the young man is in: crying as he is, covered in dirt and...is that blood? What has happened here? Sir Rovach wonders.

Slowing his horse down, Sir Rovach looks at the Captain and the soldiers under his command. But they just ride along, paying the young man no more concern than they would a hurt dog in the street. None of them appear to care about this lad or what could be the cause of his sorrow. Lowering his head, Sir Rovach wonders if this is how the protectors of this society care for their people? It can't cost them but a few moments to at least inquire with the lad as to his troubles. To just ride along wouldn't be right. However, Sir Rovach has a feeling the Captain wouldn't approve of even a moments delay. Perhaps in this situation, it might be easier to ask forgivness than to ask permission? thinks Sir Rovach.

Halting his horse besides the young man, Sir Rovach leans over and asks in a calm voice "Why the tears, young Sir? What has happened to cause you so much sorrow?"
"You are
what you do
when it counts."

Butternut:

The ride back to town is relatively uneventful. Butternut enjoys pointing out the various signs of wildlife along the roadside to Mayla, who seems genuinely fascinated by the observations. Maybe she has the makings of a ranger herself!

Eventually, the day grows long and night approaches. The long ride is tiring and Mayla gradually falls off to sleep. The gentle sounds of her breathing as her body rests against Butternut's chest are soothing and lead the halfling to odd, unbidden thoughts of what it might be like to have her own children. It has been many years since she has even considered the possibility.

Soon, Vaelos appears again, joining the already-large group along with a female elf. Butternut returns his silent greeting with a smile and a nod. His presence feels familiar and comforting. While the events that lead to her becoming a ranger were not pleasant, her time with that band was very rewarding.

As they come within sight of Dormare, they encounter a young man sitting by the side of the road, crying. His clothes, hair and skin are filthy and show traces of what may be blood. Butternut urges Springheel to a slower pace and shifts to that side of the road as she approaches, trying to see if she recognises anything of the boy. If he is from the local area, perhaps she can note a family resemblance to get some idea of who he is. As she draws close, Butternut notices that Sir Rovach has stoppped to speak to the fellow as well.

Aesa:

Aesa will attempt some small talk with Stephanie during the ride but will keep mostly to herself. The mood seems forced much like their having to return without seeing the investigation to its end. Only those from the Shining Coast in her group seem to be having conversations of any length during this time. What awaits us at the village? Aesa wonders.

Since there is no time being given for a proper meal to be prepared, Asea will eat from her rations that she had packed for this travel. The hard tack is not as enjoyable as a fresh meal, but it suffices. Eventually night begins to fall and lanterns are brought out. It spoils her infravision, but it's much better to clearly see on this windy wilderness road.

As the village draws closer, Aesa thinks she hears someone sobbing nearby. Others of her group hear it as well, and soon a young man comes into view by the side of the road. He's quite dirty and it looks like there is blood on his clothes. He grips some sort of parchment and looks up at the approaching riders, hope filling his eyes. Most of the soldiers don't even pay the young man any mind, but first Sir Rovach and then Butternut stop. Aesa will draw up her horse near her companions as well.
Halting his horse besides the young man, Sir Rovach leans over and asks in a calm voice "Why the tears, young Sir? What has happened to cause you so much sorrow?"
"Are you hurt?" Aesa adds in, wondering if the blood is his own.
That which must be done will be done.

Erizhetiana Iltani of Lotan -

Although she realizes that most of the group ride in silence, Erizhi continues her talk with Dareos, priest of the Ebon Lady. They exchange some thoughts on their pantheons and then Dareos mentions an odd source of inspiration, which is amusing in a confusing way to the priestess.

"Perhaps so," she responds,w ith a wide grin still etched on her face. "I shall never look upon a mole in the same way again, good sir."

Dareos goes on to explain some of the differences that exist between Maletar and Barivain.

Many things to consider there, as she takes mental notes of the priest's words. The two human kingdoms could easily be allied it seems. And the elves have close ties to these lands. It makes her wonder why anyone would think that the plot they uncovered here would work. Unless it was simply some sort of feint. Something to lull people into a false sense of security or to draw their attention away from a true strike. Hopefully they would find out more when this mysterious meeting would take place.

Once day turns into night, Erizhi will keep more quiet. For one it is harder to see her riding companion and second, it just seems more out of place. Erizhi is feeling the pangs of hunger start to set in. She had a good breakfast and lunch, but did not bring any rations with her on the trip, due to the quick timing of it. And she had used all that she originally had on her trip from Immater to Dormare. Fortunately they would not be camping in the forests tonight.

Finally the lights of the town can be seen up ahead. Erizhi has been riding near the back of the column. The further away from Captain 'No-Manners' the better she thought. As they close in on the town, she can see a few riders have slowed to the side of the road. It is Rovach, Aesa and Butternut. Erizhi recognizes the lad as one of three that had been in the inn the previous day. They had seemed very excited and while she did not overhear their conversations, it looked to her like they were about to engage in their first adventure. Apparently, judging by the boy's appearance and demeanor, it went far worse than they could have imagined.

Erizhi looks to Dareos, who's attention was also drawn there. But he says nothing and continues on. Eri decides to do the same. The Captain would be less irritated if at least a few of their group followed his silly orders. And they didn't need a forth horse surrounding the poor lad, like some interrogation squad. She would find out the situation soon enough, knowing Rovach as she did so far. Erizhi continued on with the soldiers.

The young man is momentarily startled as first one, then another and finally a third rider halt their horses near him. He looks vaguely familiar to Butternut, but with all the dirt and the poor light it’s hard to be certain. Besides these humans grow up much faster than she had expected. If it is the lad she is thinking of, he has two brothers and would often terrorize the village playing as robbers and knights through the dusty streets during a market day. Butternut isn’t entirely sure where they might live however, for she never knew them that well. Perhaps Stephanie might, but she has been lost in her own thoughts during the entire return trip and scarcely notices anything is amiss.
Halting his horse besides the young man, Sir Rovach leans over and asks in a calm voice "Why the tears, young Sir? What has happened to cause you so much sorrow?"
“Uh, uh,” the young man stammers through tears and tries to find his voice. “My brothers, Sir,” he finally manages. “They’re both dead. They told me we could do it!” Anger replaces his sorrow, but quickly fades.

“I just can’t even think of it,” he mutters. “He said it would be easy and I believed him. He thought he could afford some real armor with what we’d get!” He throws the crumpled parchment as far as he can from his hunched position, but it doesn’t sail well and rolls to a stop near the hooves of the gathered horses.”
"Are you hurt?" Aesa adds in, wondering if the blood is his own.
“I’m not hurt. Well, some scratches from running through the woods,” he admits. “I couldn’t carry them back. There is no way to!”

Dareos stops his own horse several paces past the group and listens to the youth’s ramblings. His face is a mask of sorrow and he forms words with his mouth but they’re not audible.

The rest of the column is nearing the palisade but so far Captain Maletar hasn’t made a comment or fuss over the delay of some of the group.

Kaelyn
Mounting up on his horse, Kaelyn quietly follows in line with the others. As the trek goes forward, Kaelyn is quite quiet, his thoughts his own. Quietly he is wondering if he should have said as much as he did or leave the knights to find out what he knows on his own. And what of Buchard, while we are ‘escorted’ back to the village, he runs free! And they call this justice. He thinks solomnly as he rides on.

Kaelyn feels as though he is on a march, where they must be at their destination by a certain time. 'Who could be waiting for us?' he asks himself. Wait, was it not rumored that someone important was to be at the festival? Kealyn tries to remember who, but the name and face escape him. Perhaps these mercenaries that these knights found were going to seize them. Or perhaps more than that: what if there are others within the village included in this…

There are several stops but none of which give him any rest. By night fall his legs and butt are killing him, and he swears he will have sores on his arse come morning!

A young boy is soon seen as they near the village. One that he saw leave with three others earlier yesterday. He is dirt covered and what appears to be blood upon his person. The others go and see to him bombarding him with questions and soon enough he throws a piece of parchment from his hands. ‘He lost his friends, or something happened to him on his “adventure”,' he thinks to himself before the boy answers of his brothers' fate. Intrigued Kealyn will stop his mount near and listen all the while his eyes move about in the darkness, a place he has always found comfort.

Sir Rovach listens to the young lad give the reason behind his tears. He can't help but feel pity for this boy. What could they have been thinking, to accept a mission they weren't properly prepaired for? Was it a lust for fame or gold? Or something more dangerous, like pride?
"Are you hurt?" Aesa adds in.

“I’m not hurt. Well, some scratches from running through the woods,” he admits. “I couldn’t carry them back. There is no way to!”
So, three boys attempting their first quest. Without any proper training, knowledge or equipment. Sir Rovach thinks to himself. They were obviously very brave, but foolish. But if being young & foolish was a crime, I'm sure everyone here would hang for something they've done in their life.

Dismounting his horse, caring not what the Captain may think, Sir Rovach picks up the parchment that was thrown by the boy. Not bothering to uncrumple it, he walks toward the boy, kneels in front of him, and says in a mild voice "You've suffered a great loss this day, son. My heart aches along with yours. But life must continue, no matter what adversity we encounter." Sir Rovach will stand and extend his hand towards the boy. "Come with us, my brave lad. We are heading to the inn. There I will ensure you receive rest and can physically recover from your ordeal. We can then arrange for your return to your family, and maybe also find a way to recover the bodies of your brave fallen brothers." Sir Rovach will wait a moment to see if the boy accepts his offer & takes his hand.

We can then arrange for your return to your family, and maybe also find a way to recover the bodies of your brave fallen brothers." Sir Rovach will wait a moment to see if the boy accepts his offer & takes his hand.
Uncertain at first, the boy wipes his new tears away and takes the offered hand. As he stands, he looks up, and then up, until his eyes have taken in all of Sir Rovach. “Are, are you a knight?” he asks.

His pain of loss is not gone, merely eclipsed by standing in front of the paladin. He listens in almost disbelief at the offer to come with him and the others. “I, I would really appreciate that, Sir. Th.. thank you,” he says, struggling with finding the proper manners but doing well given his rural upbringing.

“I don’t have anyone else, Sir,” he says softly. “My older brothers were my only family. We all thought the adventure would give us the gold we need to get out of here. We were to go to the capital. There are lots of opportunities there for all of us. It was my idea too, they didn’t drag me off,” he adds shamefully. “I was as much a fool as them.”

Suddenly, his eyes go wide as he thinks of something. “Can I, can I go with you?” he stammers. “I, I won’t be any trouble. I have nothing left here! Could I be your squire? I’ll do whatever you say! I promise!”
Erizhi sees the priest halt his horse and she will do the same a little further on. She looks back to see what might happen. Dareos does not seem to say anything yet. She keeps her thoughts to herself as well.
After listening to the words, Dareos turns and looks at Erizhi as if he knew she was there the whole time. “He is a fine and noble soul, your companion there,” he tells her in a soft voice, indicating Sir Rovach. “A great deed is still to be done this day after all.”

With that, he turns and rides past Erizhi towards the remainder of the column. Erizhi, and others that may look over, see that Captain Maletar and the rest of the column has completely stopped. The young man being groomed for promotion looks almost insulted at the delay, but Captain Maletar is completely ignoring him and instead is also watching the unfolding between the adventurers and the youth. Dareos nods slowly to his captain, and he returns it in kind, his face an unemotional mask all save his eyes which appear to project something more like understanding.

Uncertain at first, the boy wipes his new tears away and takes the offered hand. As he stands, he looks up, and then up, until his eyes have taken in all of Sir Rovach. “Are, are you a knight?” he asks.
Taking hold of the boy's hand, Sir Rovach helps pull him up off the ground and to his feet. He waits a moment in case the boy needs help steadying himself. When the boy asks if he is a knight, Sir Rovach will answer "Yes son. In my country I am a member of the Kights of Anu, and am a Paladin within that order."
"It is my honor to help, son. Those like myself have sworn to cheerfully give charity to others whenever possible. In truth though, it should be something that all members of society should try to do to the best of their ability and means. Imagine what a world it would be if that were true?" Sir Rovach will remove his helmet and smile to the boy. "If we don't care for each other, who will?"

After a moment, Sir Rovach will ask "It is unseemly for me to continue calling you 'son'; you should be addressed by your proper name. I am Sir Rovach Kadeen. What would your name be?"
So, they were just young boys, hoping to make a better life for themselves, thinks Sir Rovach as he hears the young boy's explaination. "We all are a fool at sometime in our life, son. The important thing is how we conduct ourselves afterwards. Do you learn from your foolishness, attempting to do better? Or do you let whatever foolishness occurred bring you down, potentially destroying yourself? That is something you alone must decide what to do."
Suddenly, his eyes go wide as he thinks of something. “Can I, can I go with you?” he stammers. “I, I won’t be any trouble. I have nothing left here! Could I be your squire? I’ll do whatever you say! I promise!”
Sir Rovach is taken back by the boy's outburst and desire to become his squire. Surely, this boy is so desperate he would join with anyone who would offer him a possibility of a brighter future. Sir Rovach shudders when he thinks what would have happened if it was Buchard who found this lad first.

But then Sir Rovach feels a warmth in his shoulders. The kind of pleasent warmth you feel sitting besides a warm fireplace on a cold night. This warmth travels from his shoulders to down his back. It is not in any way unpleasent at all. Sir Rovach looks around, puzzled. Was that a breeze? I didn't feel anything against my face. Only my back. And that is covered by my armor.

Looking towards the boy, Sir Rovach smiles and answers him in the same calm voice he has been speaking to him in. "Needs first, son. Let us first attend to your recovery after today's events. Then, afterwards we will talk. There is much you must decide for yourself before you embark upon such a life. The reasons "why" you choose such a path is more important than your ability to fight and wield a weapon. But, if you so decide that such a path is your destiny, I will help you achieve that." Thoughts of Sir Atohmos go through Sir Rovach's mind at this time. He sure would smile now, thinks Sir Rovach. I only hope I can guide this boy as good as he could.

"For now, let us continue on to the inn. I am not light, but my horse is strong. I'm sure she can bear your wieght the rest of the journey. Shall we go son?" Sir Rovach will then assist the boy onto his horse, putting the parchment the boy threw into his pouch to look at later when they arrive at the inn.

Seeing Dareos stop his horse, Erizhi also stops a few more paces away. She turns back to watch, trying to ignore the rumbling in her stomach.

She sees the paladin invite the lad to join them. That could be problematic with the Captain and their meeting, but she doubts that Rovach will acquiesce, from what she knows of him.

After listening to the words, Dareos turns and looks at Erizhi as if he knew she was there the whole time. “He is a fine and noble soul, your companion there,” he tells her in a soft voice, indicating Sir Rovach. “A great deed is still to be done this day after all.”

"Indeed," she says with a nod. However, she has yet to decide if that is an advantage or a disadvantage. Perhaps it is both, she surmises.

The young man's mention of two brothers seems to confirm that this might be one of the boys she recalls from years ago. Her memory of them is not entirely positive, though at that age they were more rambunctious than intentionally hurtful. At least in this instance they seem to have set out to do some good, but had not the skills or equipment to see it through and paid a heavy price for their lack.

Rovach helps the boy and suggests he accompany them into town. After some moments, the young man volunteers to be Rovach's squire! Rovach has the presence of mind to recommend that the boy recover from his ordeal before they discuss his future.

Once the young man is mounted behind Rovach and they start into town, Butternut will ride up closer. "I seem to recall three young brothers running about town some years ago. It seems you have grown up while I was away," she says softly to the young man.

Sir Rovach will remove his helmet and smile to the boy. "If we don't care for each other, who will?"
The youth seems uncertain if Sir Rovach is expecting an answer or not. Still he seems to think on it but doesn’t answer by the time the paladin moves on.
After a moment, Sir Rovach will ask "It is unseemly for me to continue calling you 'son'; you should be addressed by your proper name. I am Sir Rovach Kadeen. What would your name be?"
“Raile Jascen, Sir,” the young man replies. (OOC: it’s pronounced rail)

Next Sir Rovach launches into a number of smaller speeches to which Raile doesn’t respond, but seems once again to be thinking about them. Finally when the paladin is ready to depart there is one question that is clearly meant to be answered.
“Really?” he asks in disbelief. “Um, yeah, sure!” He will take the offered help and together the two of them move off to rejoin the others. On the way, Butternut rides up alongside with a comment of her own.
Once the young man is mounted behind Rovach and they start into town, Butternut will ride up closer. "I seem to recall three young brothers running about town some years ago. It seems you have grown up while I was away," she says softly to the young man.
Raile tries to place Butternut, but she can see he’s having a hard time doing so. She does recognize the family name Jascen but can’t place much more about them herself. Clearly they were not very noteworthy or prominent besides the three boys themselves.

Finally Raile says simply, “Yeah I guess so. Far too quickly for my liking.”

Everyone catches up to the front of the column and the remaining ride to the village passes quickly. The festival celebration is starting to wind down for the night and everyone can see the flower wreaths, ribbons and colorful decorations adorning nearly every door, merchant stall and business in the village. Minstrels can be heard playing jovial tunes in a couple of locations while the majority of the merchants are closing down for the night or conducting last minute business. The smell of fresh cooked sausages and peppers fill the air and remind many stomachs just how long it has been since their last good meal.

The procession has little trouble reaching the inn for no one dares stand in the way of the Knight-Captain. More than a few cheers go up through the crowds upon seeing the son of Maletar. The soldiers move to keep away any who might wish to get too close, but nearly all of the commoners keep their distance. Upon arriving at the inn, the soldiers begin to dismount and tie up their horses to the hitching posts. Captain Maletar stays mounted while the Immaterian prisoner is brought forward.

“Take him and throw him into the cell,” he orders. “Don’t waste food or water on him either. If he survives the night, he can have his trial.”

“Is this what passes for justice?” the Immaterian somehow manages in his thick accent around dried and cracked lips and a swollen tongue.

“Justice?” Captain Maletar scoffs. “I’m about ready to forgo justice and tie you behind my own horse and drag you down to the coast at a hard gallop. There I’d slice open your belly and let the blood crabs feast on your entrails while you watch. Once you finally expire, I’d take your head, as well as those of the others involved in your scheme, and drop them over the walls of Lotan. Certainly somebody there knows of your insidious plot and would recognize your failure.”

The prisoner looks over at Erizhi, but the captain cuts that off, “Don’t defer to her. You attempted that ploy and it wasn’t successful either. She clearly isn’t behind all of this. In fact, I doubt she can stand your smell any more than I can.”

Looking back to his soldier, Captain Maletar orders, “Get this filth out of my sight before I forget my manners.”

“Aye Sir,” the soldier replies, and kicks his horse hard, yanking the Immaterian away before any further words can form on his lips.

Once everyone is ready, or even if they aren’t, Captain Maletar dismounts and enters the Inn of the Smiling Dryad. It is as busy as everyone remembers from the previous night. The innkeeper is in his place behind the bar but, upon seeing the captain and the others enter, he moves around it and closes the distance to greet everyone.

“Ah welcome!” he says. “It is good to see you once again, Captain Maletar, although I wish it was for far simpler and much more pleasant circumstances.”

“Is everything ready?” Captain Maletar asks instead of replying to the niceties.

“Certainly,” the innkeeper reassures him. “The table is prepared upstairs and I have two of my best who shall be waiting on you.”

“That will be acceptable,” the captain replies and drops a number of gold coins into the innkeeper’s palm. He then asks, “About the other accommodations?”

“They will be ready very soon,” comes the reply. “Enough time to enjoy a fine meal, beverages or simply relax.”

The captain nods and moves towards the stairs leading up to the second floor tables. His men accompany him. The innkeeper drifts back to the group and says, “Welcome back. I am so glad you all have returned, especially when we received the news here. Terrible, terrible bit of business… but come, there is more than enough room at the captain’s table and whatever you may need we will bring it to you right away.”

With that the innkeeper motions to follow the soldiers up the stairs before he makes his way back towards the bar.

Erizhetiana Iltani of Lotan -

Rovach decides to bring the boy, Raile, along with him and somewhat surprisingly the Captain does not object.

Fortunately, the group manages to reach Dormare without further interruption. The little town is alive for the celebration, even at this hour, although much is winding down. Music and the smells of food both waft over the area. Erizhi's stomach speaks to her again, but at least they are at a place where that can be rectified.

The Captain sends their prisoner to a cell. There is a brief argument from the Immaterian, but it is quickly squashed with a firm statement. A little extravagant for the death of a thief, she thinks, but she would see him dead now anyway.

The soldiers then enter the inn. Erizhi decides to not leave her horse here, since she has a stable place already for this one and her other horse left there still. She will quickly ride it over there and remove the pack with the magickal instrument and pay the stable boys a few coins to remove the rest of the bags, saddle and tack.

Returning quickly to the inn, the soldiers are not seen, but the innkeeper indicates that they have gone to table on the second floor.

"...but come, there is more than enough room at the captain’s table and whatever you may need we will bring it to you right away.”

"Thank you, kindly," she responds. "I shall most definitely like some of that crushed fruit that we enjoyed this morning. And I dare say that despite the sumptuous breakfast we had, there are several hungry bellies amongst us."

Erizhi will climb the stairs, but she will go first to her room. 'They are going to eat in their armor and kits,' she wonders to herself, under her breath. 'Truly the land is rough and barbarous indeed.' She sets the pack down carefully near the bed and then drops her weapons and battlemask nearby. Quickly she will strip her armor, letting it pile on the floor for now, so that she can be to the table with only a five minute delay at most. She will run a quick brush through her hair to tame it slightly and a quick freshening with her perfume, then down to the table without changing her clothes she has been wearing under the armor. Clearly dressing for dinner is unnecessary here.

She will arrive as typical, amidst the melodious chimes of her bracelets and anklets. She will smile and nod slightly at anyone who acknowledges her and look to one of the serving girls for a free place to sit.

Aesa:

The young man, Raile, isn't hurt but is clearly in awe upon seeing Sir Rovach, so much so he pledges to be his squire! Aesa wonders just how long that idea will last however, and Sir Rovach is apparently thinking the same thing given his response.

Aesa joins the others in finally returning to the village. She watches as the prisoner is roughly taken away to some cell. What sort of prison could they possibly have here, she wonders. Like Erizhi does, Aesa will then take her horse to be properly stabled and check on her draft horse while there. Once satisfied she will catch back up to the others. Thankfully the friendly innkeeper is about and directs her to where everyone went to.
That which must be done will be done.

Kaelyn
He watches as the boy tells his tale, and Sir Rovach asks him to accompany them. The boy is ecstatic and soon asks to be his squire, which judging by the paladin’s reaction has his reservations of allowing it to happen. ‘He trusts to easy, seeing the good in all regardless if it will be his downfall.’ He thinks to himself though the boy has lost all his kin, would he be any different? He asks himself.
Shaking such thoughts from his mind as his belly begins to rumble in objection to his fast, he urges his mount forward after the other knights. In time the soft melodies of ministrals fill the air as the festival begins to dwindle.
This would be a fate waiting for him if he walked the path he was upon. As sombering thought as he dismounts and brings his mount to the stable.Passing the stablehands a few coppers he will allow themto remove the tack and harness, and askingthem to bring the bags to his room.
The innkeeper drifts back to the group and says, “Welcome back. I am so glad you all have returned, especially when we received the news here. Terrible, terrible bit of business… but come, there is more than enough room at the captain’s table and whatever you may need we will bring it to you right away.”
“Thank you, It is good to see you well. At least justice will be served,” he says in reply. “ Thank you for your kindness,” he says as he walks up the the stairs to the room in which the knights went. He will wait to see where an open seat is then sit down. “So why bring us here and not continue on after Buchard? Won’t the trail go cold?" he asks curiously but respectfully to the Captain.

Sir Rovach

Sir Rovach helps young Raile up onto his horse and continues to follow the Captain as they proced back into Dormare. Sir Rovach is surprised that the Captain, based upon his previous reactions earlier, didn't challenged his reasoning for the brief stop. Perhaps the first impressions he had of the man were false? Sir Rovach was also concerned that the other companions might have issues with him inviting young Raile along, but nobody says anything about it as well. For the rest of the journey Sir Rovach rides on in silence unless he is spoken to, thinking on the past day's events, what their upcoming meeting will consist of, and how ultimately to address the needs of young Raile. It is with these thoughts in his head that they eventually arrive at the Inn of the Smiling Dryad.

Upon arrival at the Inn, Sir Rovach witnesses the verbal exchange between the Captain and the prisoner. Very imaginative form of punishment, thinks Sir Rovach to himself, a smile forming within his helmet. As soon as the thought crosses his mind, he's disappointed in himself. Thoughts of revenge & joy in the punishment of others are not worthy thoughts of one such as himself.

Once the prisoner is taken away, Sir Rovach dismounts his warhorse and then helps young Raile down afterwards. "Follow me, Raile," he says as he leads his horse over to the stables like his other companions are doing. When he gets the opportunity, he will give the stableboy a few silvers to ensure his horse is groomed and fed for the evening. Then he will remove his helmet and proceed into the Inn, ensuring young Raile is still with him.

Walking up to the innkeeper, Sir Rovach gives him a smile and claps him on the shoulder. "It warms my heart to see you again, Sir. Before I proceeded upstairs, I was wondering if you could help me with a situation?"

Pausing a moment and then motioning to Raile, Sir Rovach continues. "Young Raile has need to recover from this day's events. Could you arrange for him to be seen to? Cleaned up, any wounds tended, and fed. And perhaps a fresh set of clothes too. Something fine but durable for travel." Sir Rovach will then give the innkeeper 6 gold from his pouch. "You have my deepest thanks, Sir. And if you need more coin to cover the costs, you have just to ask and I will provide what you need". Then, with a whisper, Sir Rovach will add "And please, no strong drink for the lad."

Turning to Raile, Sir Rovach will speak to him, ensuring the innkeeper hears these words as well. "Here is your first test, young Raile, to see if you can follow orders like all good knights must." Sir Rovach flashes Raile a smile and then continues. "You are to go with this kind gentleman and follow his instructions to ensure your needs are tended to. Afterwards, you will wait down here until our business upstairs in concluded. Can you do this for me?"

Sir Rovach answers whatever questions Raile or the innkeeper may have, and then proceeds upstairs to the room where the Captain went to. He feels his stomach start to growl as he walks upstairs, the thought of food now making him hungry. Sir Rovach thinks for a moment that maybe he should clean his armor some and be a little more presentable but figures the Captain isn't the sort who would even care about such things. Besides, it would take too long and Sir Rovach is in a hurry to see why they were in such a rush to arrive back here. Walking into the room, he hears Mister Kaelyn ask the Captain what business they may have here and are not after Buchard. My thoughts exactly, he thinks. Sir Rovach will look for a free chair to sit down in, removing his sword before sitting. He will pull out and read the parchment Raile had discarded while he is waiting for their meeting to begin and expressing his thanks for whatever refreshment is available.

The group has arrived back at the village of Dormare just as the first day of the Spring Festival is winding down. Most everyone stables their horses before entering the inn, while Captain Maletar and his soldiers simply leave them hitched out front. Once everyone has made sure their mounts will be properly cared for, they themselves go to the inn and are greeted by the innkeeper who is quite glad to see all have returned safely. Apparently news of what happened at the Makkee farm has at least reached his ears ahead of the group’s return. Since they met the constable on the road, it is quite apparent someone made the news known to at least a few in the village.

Kaelyn -
“Thank you, It is good to see you well. At least justice will be served,” he says in reply. “ Thank you for your kindness,” he says as he walks up the the stairs to the room in which the knights went.
“Yes, we must take comfort in that,” the innkeeper says.

Erizhi -
"Thank you, kindly," she responds. "I shall most definitely like some of that crushed fruit that we enjoyed this morning. And I dare say that despite the sumptuous breakfast we had, there are several hungry bellies amongst us."
“Most certainly,” the innkeeper says smiling. “You will find that and more already waiting for you, as well as whatever else you may desire.”

Sir Rovach -
Walking up to the innkeeper, Sir Rovach gives him a smile and claps him on the shoulder. "It warms my heart to see you again, Sir. Before I proceeded upstairs, I was wondering if you could help me with a situation?"
“Why, most certainly,” comes the reply.
“Ah, yes,” the innkeeper says solemnly. “I wasn’t certain which ‘adventure’ these young brothers were undertaking but I feared for their safe return. If only my gut had been wrong in this matter.”

He glances at the gold and says, “I doubt there will be any expense this shouldn’t cover. However, I will let you know if there is further need. One of the patrons tonight is a young druid whom would certainly be willing to help. Clothing may have to wait until the morrow, but I will see what can be arranged. As for the rest, you have no worries.”
“Um, sure,” Raile says, clearly disappointed to not be able to shadow Sir Rovach's every move, but he doesn’t protest. Instead he looks to the innkeeper.

“Come with me lad, there’s someone I want you to meet,” the innkeeper says, leading him away. “I’ll make sure to bring out some stew and bread right away for you. I have some hot cider nearly ready for someone to consume as well.”

~ ~ ~

As the group starts to head upstairs and walk around one edge of the balcony, they see a semi-private room where all of the soldiers are seated. The table can seat twenty so there is room for all. Two serving girls are present and are filling goblets with mead, water or fresh juice depending on each man’s preference. There is already some food on the table - an assortment of cheeses, fresh fruits, breads, jams and nuts are all being dug into. As each person sits down, one of the serving girls is over shortly to fill their goblet and take their order of whatever main dish they may desire. If recommendations are inquired after, they say both the stew and the venison are prime this evening.

Captain Maletar sits at the head of the table and most of his men are near that end. The younger soldiers have a seat or two between them while Dareos motions Erizhi over, once she enters the room, to take a seat next to him but on the far side of the captain. Conversation is minimal as everyone appears hungry, and whatever words are said are low and have nothing really to do with the day’s events. The elves are there as well and are seated next to each other on the far side of the table talking quietly to themselves in what might be assumed to be Elvish to untrained ears.
He will wait to see where an open seat is then sit down. “So why bring us here and not continue on after Buchard? Won’t the trail go cold?" he asks curiously but respectfully to the Captain.
Captain Maletar regards Kaelyn a moment before answering. “My task is not to drag you and your companions after Buchard or the others involved in this plot. I have capable men already moving to the rendezvous point to free the remaining children taken and apprehend or slay the criminals,” he explains.

“From what was mentioned by your group, Buchard headed west, not north,” the captain adds further. “It would seem to me he lost the stomach for this business and I’m sure a man of his means could easily avoid any pursuit,” he says, watching Kaelyn’s reaction closely.

“We will catch up to him soon enough. For now let him believe he is the smarter man while he huddles under some tree and tries to rest while looking over his shoulder for a while,” Captain Maletar adds.

“Now enjoy the fare and get some rest should you desire, the night is still young for all of us,” he concludes, but is seemingly not happy at the prospect of it himself.
Sir Rovach will look for a free chair to sit down in, removing his sword before sitting. He will pull out and read the parchment Raile had discarded while he is waiting for their meeting to begin and expressing his thanks for whatever refreshment is available.
Sir Rovach will do his best to smooth out the crumpled parchment and see it is indeed a posting from the Heroes’ Board:

The Constable of Dormare herby proclaims the offering of a hefty reward for the slaying of a beast taken up a lair to the northeast of the village. Known as a basilisk, this beast is much like a giant, eight-legged crocodile, but far more deadly. Any treasures found in the beast’s lair may be kept by the heroes involved in addition to the monetary reward of one hundred gold towers upon proper proof of the deed done being presented to the constable himself. Capable adventurers only as the beast has claimed several lives of villagers already.

So it appears young Raile and his brothers went after a big lizard threatening the village, Sir Rovach thinks to himself. His brothers are most likely in the beasts stomach by now, with little chance to recover their bodies. With a sigh, he will conclude his line of thought. But how should I tell Raile that? Or should I?

Looking down the table, Sir Rovach will address the Captain. "Captain, my thanks for providing us with this meal. It was quite unexpected but appreciated. Indeed, I could use some rest from today's events. But if I may, I would like to ask you a few questions on a newer matter. This was the posting that young Raile and his brothers responded to yesterday. And that led to his brothers untimely demise." Sir Rovach will pass the posting down to the Captain if he would receive it.

"Young Raile was upset that he couldn't carry his brothers bodies out of this creatures foul lair. To recover these bodies might go far to help him begin healing his mind and soul. In addition, it seems this giant lizard is threatening the village area too. Do you know any details about this 'Basilisk' or it's activities, Captain?" Sir Rovach will then wait to see what answer the Captain may have, or not have considering what he has seen of the Captains mood this day...

Erizhetiana Iltani of Lotan -

The group returns to the Smiling Dryad and the innkeeper has a meal set up for the soldiers and the adventurers as well.

“Most certainly,” the innkeeper says smiling. “You will find that and more already waiting for you, as well as whatever else you may desire.”

"I am repeatedly impressed by the quality of your food and your service, good sir Torvin," she answers with a smile. "I look forward to the opportunity to dine here again. Not only tonight but beyond, as well."

When Erizhi arrives at the dinner table, she sees Dareos motion her over to sit next to him. She will happily slip into the chair and ask the closest serving girl for some fresh juice. She had quite enjoyed that so far. "I would also very much like the stew," she says to the young lass. She quite enjoyed big game, but the stew she tasted yesterday struck her fancy now. After a few moments of small talk, and seeing that the initial foods are of the 'serve yourself' variety, she will help herself to some cheese, berries, and bread with jam. The fare serves to curb her hunger pangs and also to build the appetite for the coming meal.

Captain Tamberlain tells Kaelyn that Buchard is not a likely candidate for pursuit at this time and that the children should be freed soon. He still does not hint at what their purpose her is. She frowns to herself as she takes a drink from her cup. She wonders if the Captain has a plan to use the adventurers in a manner that will make the most of their skills or if he is just using them and they are essentially being pressed into service. They will find out but apparently still not any time soon.

“Now enjoy the fare and get some rest should you desire, the night is still young for all of us,” he concludes, but is seemingly not happy at the prospect of it himself.

It sounds as if they are waiting for someone or something which will be delayed until the middle of the night. Erizhi already decides that she will sleep when possible, even if it is a nap in the chair, here at the table. She is particularly glad she decided to take off her armor already.

Rovach addresses the Captain regarding the 'adventure' that Raile and his brothers embarked upon. Rovach mentions a lizard of some sort, then finally names it: a basilisk. That explains why it was impossible to carry the bodies out, Erizhi thinks. A basilisk can turn its enemies to stone with its gaze. She had read that it was possible to reverse the process with powerful enough magicks, but that often the victim was unable to withstand the process of both transformations. Moreover, what in the world where these boys thinking? It was not a creature that she would relish facing, unless the rewards were rather high. Erizhi will wait to see what the Captain has to say before offering any comments of her own, since he already seems to be aware of everything anyway.

Aesa:

Aesa joins the others after checking on her horses. She gave the stable boy an assortment of copper coins for tending to the needs of her riding horse tonight. Erizhi is one of the last to arrive, having traded her armor for something more comfortable. Not a bad idea, Aesa thinks, but she was more worried about what the captain might say, and plus her own custom leather is far more comfortable than most.

She sees that the priestess has a reserved seat for her next to the older Maletar priest. Aesa smiles and then the serving girl is there. "Some mead, if you would," she says, "and some stew would be perfect." While she waits, she enjoys some fresh fruit and cheese. An elven wine would probably be most welcome at this table, she thinks while she snacks.

Kaelyn's concern about Buchard is still troubling him, but Captain Maletar seems to not give the matter any concern. Surely there might be other reasons behind it, but Buchard is quite dangerous to just be left alone for a while. She will lean in to Kaelyn and say softly. "Maybe it is something we should pursue ourselves after whatever business is concluded here," Aesa offers her companion.

Sir Rovach sends the parchment up the table to the captain and reveals that the young brothers were pursuing a basilisk that is troubling the village. One part brave, two parts foolish indeed, Aesa thinks, having never encountered such a beast herself, but she's heard the tales. She isn't sure what Captain Maletar will say, but strongly doubts he will get directly involved.
That which must be done will be done.

Sir Rovach -
When a serving girl approaches Sir Rovach he will place his order with the lady. "If I may have mead, good lady, when you get a chance. You recommend either the stew or venison this evening? Then please, may I try some of your fine venison to quench my appetite." He will smile and thank the serving girl as she then proceeds on to assist the others sitting at the table.
“It would be my pleasure,” she says smiling, her brown hair cut to frame her face nicely. “I will get your order in for the venison right away.”
Captain Maletar merely nods in response to the paladin’s gratitude for the meal as if it was a small matter. He says nothing else but indicates by his mannerisms that he will read the posting and waits for its arrival by way of a couple of his men.
“So old Gorvan is still having trouble with that basilisk,” the captain mutters aloud, then says more directly to Sir Rovach, “I believe this particular one has been troubling the village for five or six seasons now. There are several groves of fruit trees and wild berry bushes along the northeastern ridges that the villagers like to go collect from. Every so often the basilisk gets lucky.”

“As far as collecting the man’s brothers, they are likely turned to stone than not,” the captain reveals. “As to if they can be saved, I would not know but I believe they would have to be intact for it to even be tried.”

Erizhi -
When Erizhi arrives at the dinner table, she sees Dareos motion her over to sit next to him. She will happily slip into the chair and ask the closest serving girl for some fresh juice. She had quite enjoyed that so far. "I would also very much like the stew," she says to the young lass.
“Right away, my lady,” the other serving girl with long braided hair the color of wheat says and she brings the juice over immediately to fill your goblet before disappearing to no doubt get your order placed.

Dareos waits patiently for you to finish ordering before saying, “Now you truly are a wise lady.” Assuming he will receive a questioning look or raised eyebrow from Erizhi, he will add, “The smartest of the lot of us to remove your armor before taking your evening meal.”

Aesa -
Aesa smiles and then the serving girl is there. "Some mead, if you would," she says, "and some stew would be perfect."
The same serving girl that was attending Sir Rovach sees to Aesa’s needs, bringing mead with a smile. “I will get your stew for you right away,” she adds.

~ ~ ~

Soon everyone’s meals arrive piping hot and smelling divine. Various conversations continue on until a point that Captain Maletar looks to Vaelos and says more than asks, “Why don’t you sing for us?” The elf scout almost seems like he knew this request would be coming.

A few moments later, the elf starts singing in a low, almost-entrancing, voice that makes everyone stop conversing if they wish to listen to the song. It is a tale about a young elven maiden of remarkable beauty who walks the shoreline every night waiting for her love to return from the sea. It’s not clear by the words whether or not the one she waits for is still alive or presumed dead, but the elf maiden continues on regardless. Then one evening there are dead fish washing up upon the shore and the elf takes this as a sign that her love will not come back to her, so she returns to the wood which has been her home with such anguish in her heart. She roams the wood headless of her need for food and rest and eventually perishes. So great was her pain that she continues to haunt the woods for nearly a hundred years after. Then one spring night a figure enters that very wood so close to the shore, calling out the elf maiden’s name. Angered at such an intrusion, she quickly engages and slays the person. Only then does she realize it is her long lost love finally able to return to her. Upon his person he carries three gifts for his love; a necklace and locket crafted from the finest dwarven goldsmiths, a comb carved from the purest coral deep beneath the sea and a ring of rare electrum encrusted with sunstone and topaz. The spirit of her love rises up to meet her and forgives her for that which she had just done unknowingly. He confesses he would not wish to live without her and begs that she find peace for herself so she may join him for all eternity. She ultimately is able to do just that, and together they walk to join all the others that have gone before them and prepare to help welcome all those that will come still.

Several of the soldiers clap once Vaelos is finished and the female elf scout is clearly moved by the performance, her eyes threatening to release a flood of tears. Dareos will ask, “What is the name of that ballad?” to which the reply is, “The Banshee of the Tenwood.”

Captain Maletar will rise shortly after and address his men, “You are all dismissed, except for you Dareos. I will return shortly, so should any of you adventurers wish to rest or take care of any business, you have a short while to do so. Once I return we will hopefully be able to get our business underway.”

The soldiers and elves will begin to get up from the table and make their way out of the semi-private room. Dareos will say to Erizhi, “I shall return shortly after I remove this armor lest it become a permanent attachment.”

With that the priest will also leave, which will mean only the group will be left at the table. The serving girls will begin cleaning up but will be more than happy to fill goblets or get more food should there be a desire for it.

Erizhetiana Iltani of Lotan -

Erizhi enjoys the initial fare and her quickly filled cup of fresh fruit juice. The service here truly is quite good for such a small town, she thinks. As she takes another sip to wash down the jam-covered breads, Dareos turns to her and speaks.

“Now you truly are a wise lady.” This brings a puzzled smile to her face and she cocks her head to the side questioningly as she turns to the priest.

“The smartest of the lot of us to remove your armor before taking your evening meal.”

Her smile grows fully at the comment and she takes a a few berries before speaking. "Is it intelligence or just spoiled indulgence?" she says, her grin still playing about her features. "But thank you for your flattery, nonetheless."

Erizhi continues to partake of the appetizers as she waits for the main meals to be served. As she was one of the last to arrive at the table, she expects the same for her meal and even at this late hour, she is quite hungry. If the evening did not appear to be lasting so long, she might not want such a full stomach before bed, but the indication from the captain was that it would go quite long.

Erizhi will nod her appreciation in the Captain's direction also when Rovach expresses his thanks for the meal. Most of the meal is small talk, except for the talk about the basilisk. Tamerlaine offers a few bits of information and based on his explanation, Erizhi expects that Rovach may want to free the village from the beast's influence however. She will decide whent he time comes if that is a risk she is willing to take.

The meal is quite good and hearty and fills Erizhi with a comforting warmth. At one point, the captain asks the elf Valeos to sing. Erizhi is not sure what to expect and is hoping she does not hate it, but the elf has an interesting voice with a haunting quality. It is a sad song and moving. But Erizhi cannot help thinking how stupid the elf girl was to think that dead fish washing up on shore meant her love would not come home. Living in a coastal city, Eri has seen lots of dead fish over the years. Of course a hundred years is a long time, even for an elf, so she wonders for a moment why the elf was away so long. Then she remembers this is just a story and it does not have to make sense. She smiles at the singer briefly in appreciation. And joins in the applause.

The meal winds down and Erizhi asks for another filling of her goblet. She is now content and happy and Tamberlaine indicates there is a lull in the plan.

“You are all dismissed, except for you Dareos.

Erizhi smiles and raises her cup toward the priest. "Maybe it's intelligence and indulgence both," she offers with a chuckle.

As only the adventurers are left, Erizhi considers for a moment. She does not wish to sit here in these dining chairs all evening. But it would be rude to simply depart so quickly also. She will bide her time to see what the others will do.

"I don't know about the rest of you, but that meal definitely warmed the soul. Sadly, we know little more why we are here than we did before we left the sad scene at the Makee farm this afternoon."

Kaelyn

Captain Maletar regards Kaelyn a moment before answering. “My task is not to drag you and your companions after Buchard or the others involved in this plot. I have capable men already moving to the rendezvous point to free the remaining children taken and apprehend or slay the criminals,” he explains.
Kaelyn nods in understanding upon hearing this, though he doubts very highly that they will find Buchard there that easily, especially after being foiled within mid scheme. After all, if it were him, he would leave the men to their own fates and save his own hide, if he were in this position.
“From what was mentioned by your group, Buchard headed west, not north,” the captain adds further. “It would seem to me he lost the stomach for this business and I’m sure a man of his means could easily avoid any pursuit,” he says, watching Kaelyn’s reaction closely.
“Sadly, you are correct. One does not become so high up in that guild’s ranks without knowing when to cut bait and save yourself. I am just thankful I left when I could, or I would face a similar fate as Buchard.”
“We will catch up to him soon enough. For now let him believe he is the smarter man while he huddles under some tree and tries to rest while looking over his shoulder for a while,” Captain Maletar adds.
“Indeed.” He appears to agree, though he has a feeling that Buchard would not hide for very long nor rest for very long, for he is not the type to do so.
Holding his goblet of mead, he glances to the druid and inclines his head in agreement, “Perhaps that might be best.” Leaning in closer and whispering softly, “I would be hard pressed to believe they would find him .”

“Now enjoy the fare and get some rest should you desire, the night is still young for all of us,” he concludes, but is seemingly not happy at the prospect of it himself.
Soon enough the others offer up their orders to the servers, After sparsely eating of the bread, jams and cheeses, Kaelyn looks to the server, “Could I have a mead, and a plate of the venison my good Lady?”
Several minutes later the server brings him his fare, raising his glass to the Captain. “Thank you for your generosity. To your health!” he adds as he takes a sip of the sweet nectar. Taking out his blade he begins to eat the venison, which is moist, tender, and delicious.
The talk turns to that of the parchment that Sir Rovach acquired from his new would be squire.
“Stone, you say? So this beast tears the stone individual to shreds? He says taking a sip from his goblet, and wiping his mouth on the back of his wrist. “Are there any caves in that area? Or perhaps a secluded area that may provide this beast sanctuary?” he asks curiously. Having heard little of stories of such creatures he wishes to alleviate his curiosity.

The night progresses and small talk radiates about the table, when the captain asks one of the elves to sing. Sitting back in his chair he listens to the intoxicating voice of the elf. Sure he has heard of the elves' talent for song, but never was blessed enough to hear it. It is a sad ballad of an elf waiting for her love, and unknown to her in her undead wakings kills her unaware lover but they soon reconcile to share their eternity together. Seeing the female elf’s reaction, he can’t help but wonder aloud, “Is this ballad based on that of truth or merely composed? It is a compelling work.” He asks, hoping not to come across rude.
With that the priest will also leave, which will mean only the group will be left at the table. The serving girls will begin cleaning up but will be more than happy to fill goblets or get more food should there be a desire for it.
As one of the serving girls attends to her duties, Kaelyn will ask, “May I have another mead? And perhaps if you have it, a board in which to hang upon the wall to pass the time until our host returns?”
"I don't know about the rest of you, but that meal definitely warmed the soul. Sadly, we know little more why we are here than we did before we left the sad scene at the Makee farm this afternoon."
"Aye, it was a very fine venison. One that has bested my favorite, I dare say." 'Forgive me mother' he thinks to himself with a smirk as he thinks of her reaction upon being told of the delectable dish. "At least we are warm, content and none here have iron bracelets upon our wrists, my lady. I suspect that this Captain, may wish to use us to his advantage, though to what ends I cannot say."

Erizhi -
Her smile grows fully at the comment and she takes a a few berries before speaking. "Is it intelligence or just spoiled indulgence?" she says, her grin still playing about her features. "But thank you for your flattery, nonetheless."
“Only you would know the truth there,” the priest replies, “but I’m betting on the former.”
Erizhi smiles and raises her cup toward the priest. "Maybe it's intelligence and indulgence both," she offers with a chuckle.
“Now you merely jest,” he replies with a chuckle of his own.

Kaelyn -
Soon enough the others offer up their orders to the servers, After sparsely eating of the bread, jams and cheeses, Kaelyn looks to the server, “Could I have a mead, and a plate of the venison my good Lady?”
“Of course, good sir,” the blonde serving girl who also attending to Erizhi replies. She fills his goblet first and then hurries to get his order placed.
Several minutes later the server brings him his fare, raising his glass to the Captain. “Thank you for your generosity. To your health!” he adds as he takes a sip of the sweet nectar. Taking out his blade he begins to eat the venison, which is moist, tender, and delicious.
The captain is taken by surprise at the toast, but several of the soldiers join in and so he raises his own goblet in return to Kaelyn’s.
“I guess it would depend on the temperament of the individual beast,” Captain Maletar replies. “However they could easily topple such victims in their lumbering wake or the elements could wear down the stone over time.”

“I am unaware of any large cavernous formations in this area,” he adds, “but a natural burrow or the like is not beyond the realm of possibility.”
Seeing the female elf’s reaction, he can’t help but wonder aloud, “Is this ballad based on that of truth or merely composed? It is a compelling work.” He asks, hoping not to come across rude.
The elf, Vaelos, gives Kaelyn a raised eyebrow that could be construed to mean that the truth of it is unknown. He will say however, “It is a tale told warning elves of what may happen if we become too passionate like humans often are. For some among our kind it is dangerously easy to get obsessed in one thing so that even a lengthy passing of time is hardly noticed.”

A moment later, he adds, “Still there is much debate over the three items mentioned and their value as relics of a lost time. It is widely believed the man in the tale is Runduin Woodwaern, a skilled artisan, warrior and adventurer of renown among the Wood Elves who lived back before the Akorians united the lands of Men. If that is so, then the pieces of jewelry would be artifacts worth locating and returning to the Elven people. Opponents argue it is merely a fairy tale. I tend to believe the truth lies somewhere between.”
As one of the serving girls attends to her duties, Kaelyn will ask, “May I have another mead? And perhaps if you have it, a board in which to hang upon the wall to pass the time until our host returns?”
“Of course you may,” she replies to the request of more mead, but stops when asked about the second item. “Sir?” she says, and her puzzled look clearly shows she has no idea what Kaelyn is after.

As the group finishes the last of their meal and partakes in conversation and drink while waiting for Captain Maletar and Dareos' return, another person wanders into the semi-private room. Several of the group recognize the individual Rollester, a large tankard in his hand and his leering stare on display.

“What have we here on this fine night?” he asks to no one in particular, although his eyes pass over each of the females present where he lingers for a long moment.

“Ah yes,” he says, seemingly bringing himself out of whatever fantasy he was enjoying at that moment. “You must be the adventurers that everyone is so talkative about. Mind if I join this little celebration?”

Sir Rovach

Sir Rovach passes down Raile's posting to the Captain, very much interested in what knowledge he might have on this matter.

Likely turned to stone?!? Sir Rovach has heard of creatures having such powers but only in tales told, never any personal experience with such magical beasts. To slay such a beast surely would help this village out and be a worthy opponent to test himself against. The excitement soon dies in his eyes when he hears the Captain's view on the fate of young Raile's brothers. I don't think the boy would be ready for this yet. The memories of their demise is probally still too fresh for him to face.
Various conversations continue on until a point that Captain Maletar looks to Vaelos and says more than asks, “Why don’t you sing for us?” The elf scout almost seems like he knew this request would be coming.
He listens to the elf's song when he sits in his chair and sips his mead. He has never had any musical skill or experience, with instruments or with singing, in his life and knows he has an untrained ear for such. Yet a calm came over him that he had never experienced by any song before in his life. Sir Rovach contnues to listen, his eyes closed. When the song is over he will open his eyes once more, raise his meal and nod his head in thanks for the song.
"I don't know about the rest of you, but that meal definitely warmed the soul. Sadly, we know little more why we are here than we did before we left the sad scene at the Makee farm this afternoon."
"At least we are warm, content and none here have iron bracelets upon our wrists, my lady. I suspect that this Captain, may wish to use us to his advantage, though to what ends I cannot say."
"I agree with you, my Lady." Sir Rovach responds to Lady Erizhetiana's comment. "On both the meal and the reason why we were brought back here. I believe Mister Kaelyn is correct in this matter too. I have the feeling, if not the Captain, then somebody he knows wants something from us. But our only option seems to be to wait until they choose to present themselves."

When a passing serving girl comes by who appears to have a free moment, Sir Rovach will attempt to get her attention and ask politely for another mead. "In addition, dear Lady, could you also check on Raile for me to see if he is doing alright? He was the young man who came inside with us when we arrived tonight."
As the group finishes the last of their meal and partakes in conversation and drink while waiting for Captain Maletar and Dareos' return, another person wanders into the semi-private room. Several of the group recognize the individual Rollester, a large tankard in his hand and his leering stare on display.

This man again? Remembering the strange man from yesterday, he is unsure if he wants his company with them; while he did not see any evil in his soul, this man surely does not seem to be aware how to speak properly to a Lady. But some of the others may wish to speak to him and this is not his table to say yea or nay if someone may join it. For now Sir Rovach will remain silent, but keep his eyes on this leering man while he is present with them.
"You are

Aesa feels the gaze of this man upon her, though she hardly pays it much mind. She does though wonder just who he is as he doesn't seem to be merely a drunken patron.
“Ah yes,” he says, seemingly bringing himself out of whatever fantasy he was enjoying at that moment. “You must be the adventurers that everyone is so talkative about. Mind if I join this little celebration?”
Clearly he must be used to people he can influence or overbear, Aesa thinks as this man tries to invite himself into the room. So far no one seems to be objecting to his presence, but this is hardly a "celebration," so she speaks first, telling him just that.

"Very astute of you," Aesa says flatly, "but there is little to celebrate and I don't recall seeing you out there helping us or the soldiers of this kingdom."
That which must be done will be done.

Erizhetiana Iltani of Lotan -

Kaelyn has some concerns about Buchard and the pursuit of him. Unfortunately from the sounds of the small talk, there was only a small window of opportunity to chase the man. Erizhi wonders now, since they were the instruments behind the defeat of the plan he was involved in here, whether there will be an attempt at revenge. It will not be a task to learn who the adventurers were, in a town such as this, as everyone likely knows the story or will soon. Enough gold would loosen most tongues. Erizhi decides she will not lose sleep over the situation however.

When the elf finishes his song and begins explanation of the tale, Erizhi listens closely to the details. Perhaps this tale does speak about artifacts worth some value in recovery.

"Most stories often have a truth in the middle of the warring sides," she offers. "People will often find a way to convince themselves of certain 'facts' in order to solidify their own view in their minds, while ignoring those that go against their belief. But the question I have is not whether the story is an accurate telling, for most stories evolve over time with the repeated telling, but I am wondering if these artifacts have any special powers or uses, or is their value in the simple existence of such ancient items? And where might they be found?"

Dareos answers her playful response about removing her armor with a repeated compliment. Erizhi continues to smile at the kind words, but surmises that many would think otherwise. "I am afraid that I could find many who might disagree with you, my good man. But i like your answer better," she says, deciding the question for the moment.

Later she returns to the topic when the priest mentions his need to remove his own armor.

“Now you merely jest,” he replies with a chuckle of his own.

"After a day like we had, a jest is good for the soul, no?" she offers in return. She takes another sip from her juice and offers a slight wave to the priest as he departs.

"Indeed," she answers simply. "I wonder how long a wait it will be. These chairs are comfortable enough for a meal and a meeting, but waiting in them will make my rear fall asleep after riding to the farm and back and it has been a long day already." Erizhi will stand and stretch herself slightly, trying to ease the stiffness she is beginning to feel. She will walk slowly around the room and then return to a seat and prop her feet up on the seat next to her.

Soon after the group is intruded up by the sop who grossly misidentified her last evening. He leers at the women here and she returns an icy stare to the foppish lout.

Ah yes,” he says, seemingly bringing himself out of whatever fantasy he was enjoying at that moment. “You must be the adventurers that everyone is so talkative about. Mind if I join this little celebration?”

Aesa is the first to speak up in response. Clearly she was not pleased by the intrusion. The sarcasm in her response was evident.

"Very astute of you," Aesa says flatly, "but there is little to celebrate and I don't recall seeing you out there helping us or the soldiers of this kingdom."

Erizhi will respond as well, not even looking at the man as she addresses him. "My friend is correct, Mr. Rooster or whatever it is that they call you. This is not a celebration and this is also a private gathering," she will say before taking a sip from her goblet. "So you must excuse us as we have business yet to attend." She will place her cup down on the table and only then turn to look at him to make certain that he takes his leave.

Vaelos regards Erizhi as if in a new light, pausing before answering her questions. “It is largely unknown what, if any, powers the items of jewelry might posses. The gems mentioned on the ring are believed by many to have specific properties and thus lend weight to the possibility that they were magical.”

“As far as where they might be found,” the elf continues, “has also been discussed to no firm conclusion. There are hundreds of miles of coastline along the Daeyshir Kingdom and any number of those spots could be where she waited for his return. If her identity could be discerned it might help in narrowing down the possibilities. Unfortunately no one knows that vital piece either.”
"After a day like we had, a jest is good for the soul, no?" she offers in return. She takes another sip from her juice and offers a slight wave to the priest as he departs.
“Too true,” Dareos agrees.

~ ~ ~

While the group waits for the return of Captain Maletar, they get the distinct “pleasure” of Rollester’s unexpected and, presumably, wholly unwanted company.
"Very astute of you," Aesa says flatly, "but there is little to celebrate and I don't recall seeing you out there helping us or the soldiers of this kingdom."
“This is the right place,” Rollester says. “With so many visiting nobles, knights and others for the Spring Festival I couldn’t be sure if I had wandered into the wrong room.”

Sitting down at one of the seats vacated by the departing soldiers, Rollester makes himself at home. Finally he addresses Aesa’s comment. “I wouldn’t be so quick to judge who was and wasn’t helpful just because someone was not ‘seen’ there.”

Looking over at the two serving girls, Rollester lifts his tankard and calls out to them. “Wench! Fetch me something stronger than whatever they’re all having,” indicating the group by waving the tankard around in a circular gesture.

“Right away, Sir,” the brown haired girl replies, nearly spitting out the formality.
“Rooster, I like that!” Rollester replies, looking at Erizhi with a wolfish grin. “Tell you what, that can be your pet name for me, my little Shining Coast Princess.”

“I saw when you were all downstairs that your Halfling brought back the Makkee girl,” Rollester continues, using the word Halfling like one might when addressing one’s pet. “I’m surprised she didn’t eat the girl. I’ve heard that’s a pretty common occurrence for the ones among her kind that go mad.”

“Too bad the girl doesn’t seem to posses any magical talent,” Rollester continues, barreling on. “I would have taken her into my care immediately. She would have been a perfect addition.”

By this time a new tankard has arrived and Rollester’s hands greedily close around it and bring it to his lips, where he nearly drains half of whatever alcohol it contains in the span of one breath. Setting the tankard down and letting out a lengthy sigh of delight, Rollester then looks over to Kaelyn and Sir Rovach and says, “I can see why you two gentlemen would wish to travel with so many attractive females. Makes any journey pass so much easier.”

"You would know better of all of us where he might go," Aesa says, "or at least where people who know of him may have seen or heard something."
Kaelyn nods his head in agreement, his thoughts his own as he begins to think who he would speak to on his whereabouts and whom would betray Buchard, giventhe right motivation.

The captain is taken by surprise at the toast, but several of the soldiers join in and so he raises his own goblet in return to Kaelyn’s.
‘So you can be taken off guard.’ He thinks to himself as he smiles and inclines his head to the captain.

Perhaps the statues themselves will give clues to the creatures direction of origin, depending on which way they face. He guesses to himself choosing to keep that thought to himself.
--
“Of course you may,” she replies to the request of more mead, but stops when asked about the second item. “Sir?” she says, and her puzzled look clearly shows she has no idea what Kaelyn is after.
“A Dartboard? That one can throw knives at?” he answers as he hold sup a knife by the blade and acts as though to throw it in demonstration.

“Too bad the girl doesn’t seem to posses any magical talent,” Rollester continues, barreling on. “I would have taken her into my care immediately. She would have been a perfect addition.”
“Magical talent? Then you have some knowledge of the arcane then?”

With his knife in hand, Kaelyn places the blade into the table and reliquishes it. For a few moments it wobbles to and fro yet does not fall. “You presume much, friend. You may want to look upon our companions with bit more respect than those you keep company with. “

Erizhetiana Iltani of Lotan -

Valeos features change slightly after she asks questions about the artifacts in the song. He then explains that the details are largely unknown. The story and the riddle grabs her attention despite the fact that these details have likely been debated for many years.

"I do not presume to be able to bring any sudden inspiration and solution to this dilemma, but the curiousity in me begs to ask more questions. And what is this Tenwood of which the song is named?" she asks.

-----------------------

The magickal fop know as Rollester has intruded up on their waiting time. Erizhi cannot imagine that he should be here, but the dandy implies such. Worse, not only does he not depart, but he takes a seat and orders a drink! Kaelyn is the next to speak. Along with a veiled threat also.

With his knife in hand, Kaelyn places the blade into the table and reliquishes it. For a few moments it wobbles to and fro yet does not fall. “You presume much, friend. You may want to look upon our companions with bit more respect than those you keep company with.“

"Actually," Erizhi says quickly after so as not to allow and response yet from Rollester, "you would do better to not look on us at all." She narrows her eyes at the man. "And if I wanted a pet perhaps a lizard might be more appealing. I may speak with an accent from the Shining Coast, but my command of the common tongue is without fail." She will pause for a brief moment as a frown forms on her features. "Since you do not seem to be capable or willing of understanding a hint and a polite word, then I will say this as plainly as I can." She will stand up for effect. "Your presence is not desired here! Take your leave now or shall I be forced to have Torvin intervene?"

“Rooster, I like that!” Rollester replies, looking at Erizhi with a wolfish grin. “Tell you what, that can be your pet name for me, my little Shining Coast Princess.”
"Then perhaps, Sir Rooster, we can then refer to you as the Lord of Fowl?" Sir Rovach replies to Rollester's comment in a steady voice, his eyes never leaving this rude little man as he speaks. Or more accurate would be "Lord Foul"....
The audacity of this man, he thinks after Rollester makes his latest comment. That's twice now. But before he can respond, Mister Kaelyn and Lady Erizhetiana speak up.
With his knife in hand, Kaelyn places the blade into the table and reliquishes it. For a few moments it wobbles to and fro yet does not fall. “You presume much, friend. You may want to look upon our companions with bit more respect than those you keep company with. “

"Since you do not seem to be capable or willing of understanding a hint and a polite word, then I will say this as plainly as I can." She will stand up for effect. "Your presence is not desired here! Take your leave now or shall I be forced to have Torvin intervene?"
After hearing Lady Erizhetiana's response, Sir Rovach will comment as well. "You obviously spoke in haste, Lord Fowl, speaking the words before thinking. These are Ladies of good character, and should be properly treated as such as all Ladies should. Supporting this, they are of no small talent and have proven themselves to be more than capable against the forces of evil." Sir Rovach will casually stand, resting his hands on the hilt of his sword. "Please ask their pardon and go in peace, as a true gentleman would, lest one of us volunteer to teach you the customs of proper courtesy. For even a talking parrot can be taught to speak politely with consistant & firm instruction." Sir Rovach will then be ready to respond with steal if necessary if Rollester acts hostile towards them, failing to heed Mister Kaelyn's warning and Lady Erizhetiana's request.

Kaelyn -
“A Dartboard? That one can throw knives at?” he answers as he hold sup a knife by the blade and acts as though to throw it in demonstration.
The serving girl looks completely embarrassed once clarification is made for her. “Most certainly,” she says blushing. “I’ll find one for you right away.”

Erizhi -
"I do not presume to be able to bring any sudden inspiration and solution to this dilemma, but the curiousity in me begs to ask more questions. And what is this Tenwood of which the song is named?" she asks.
“The Tenwood is supposedly a tract of forest about two days ride east and south of here that is approximately ten acres in size,” Vaelos offers. “Many sages and treasure seekers have been over every possible morsel of that land and not uncovered even a clue. The Wood Elves say the land is haunted by the banshee still and avoid the place at night, but no one else has ever proven these claims.”

~ ~ ~

The conversation with Rollester has begun to get hostile. However, through it all Rollester remains largely cheerful.
“Magical talent? Then you have some knowledge of the arcane then?”
“Indeed,” Rollester replies, “and far more than mere knowledge, truth be told.”
"Then perhaps, Sir Rooster, we can then refer to you as the Lord of Fowl?" Sir Rovach replies to Rollester's comment in a steady voice, his eyes never leaving this rude little man as he speaks.
“If that is what the princess would like to call me,” Rollester says, and then turns to gaze at Sir Rovach, looking him up and down, “You however will need to find a different pet name for me.”
With his knife in hand, Kaelyn places the blade into the table and reliquishes it. For a few moments it wobbles to and fro yet does not fall. “You presume much, friend. You may want to look upon our companions with bit more respect than those you keep company with. “
“Ho, ho, you are the lively bunch! Truly this is a treat,” Rollester says with great mirth and drains his tankard, and then his eyes turn starkly fierce as he looks to the trio and says in a voice quite serious, “I would so love such demonstrations.”

Before anyone can move or respond, a new voice enters the room. “Making friends again, are we?” Captain Maletar says as he strides in. He is still adorned in his armor and the long day still evident on his features. The Knight Captain doesn’t seem surprised at Rollester’s presence.

Dareos enters next and looks to be a changed man. Gone is his armor and replaced with a simple robe the color of sun-baked earth. A broad belt is secured about his waist where his mace is tucked into. Simple sandals adorn his feet and his head is bare. He looks at Rollester with distain but says nothing to the man. Instead he moves close to Erizhi but does not sit.

The last to enter is the innkeeper. He is dressed as he always is except he does not have his oversized apron he wears when he tends bar. To not know of the man, one would think he was just a regular commoner.

“Always,” Rollester replies to the captain, and then seeing Torvin, he looks to Erizhi and adds, “Now’s your chance.” He then gives her a wink.

Rollester then turns fully to the innkeeper with a questioning look, to which the foul man receives a nod in reply. Taking a moment to get his girth under his feet, Rollester says, “Splendid.” He looks to the group and says, “Shall we then?”

"The honor is all mine, I assure you, Lord Fowl." Keeping a firm grip on his sword, Sir Rovach tenses up and is prepared to drawn his sword from its scabbard at the slightest sign of hostility from Rollester when two other individuals walk into the room...

"Shall we then what?" Sir Rovach responds to Rollester, the weariness of a long day finally starting to get to him, making him impatient. "Please explain yourself quickly. For I am getting tired of the mouthings of a foul mouth, lecherous old man."

Aesa:

The conversation gets away from Aesa as first one, and then several of her companions start to become visibly agitated and then openly hostile towards Rollester. Through it all the large man remains jovial until he finally becomes quite serious. Apparently he is taking an actual threat to his person as a challenge.

Aesa stands and moves quickly, placing a hand over Sir Rovach's that is poised to draw steel. "Pardon my forwardness, good paladin," she says quickly, "but all we are doing is playing right into his hands. He knows us now and we hardly know him," Aesa adds seeing as how most of her companions have already revealed how to get themselves riled up. He knows just how to affect everyone, she thinks. He is quite the manipulator.

Thankfully Captain Maletar returns and interrupts whatever was about to be unleashed. Rollester looks to, of all people, the innkeeper for some answer, which he seemingly gets.
Rollester then turns fully to the innkeeper with a questioning look, to which the foul man receives a nod in reply. Taking a moment to get his girth under his feet, Rollester says, “Splendid.” He looks to the group and says, “Shall we then?”

"Hopefully to whatever meeting we are waiting for," Aesa replies outloud but to no one in particular. She too, is getting weary of this day with each passing moment.
That which must be done will be done.

Sir Rovach eases up a little bit, listening to Lady Aesa's words. Closing his eyes briefly, a small sigh escapes his lips. He then opens his eyes again, a little less tension in his body. In a milder voice, he says to her "You are right, my Lady. I had intended to just ignore this man." He then shakes his head, "But he has no sense of decency or courtesy. After his insult to you and the other Ladies, what would I be if I just remained quiet and did nothing?" Lady Aesa's words definately makes sense to him, giving him pause to his actions. Yet if this Rollester wishes to challenge him, he will not back down and must answer him.
"Hopefully to whatever meeting we are waiting for," Aesa replies outloud but to no one in particular. She too, is getting weary of this day with each passing moment.
"A meeting with the basilisk is looking better all the time...." Sir Rovach mutters to himself.

Erizhetiana Iltani of Lotan -

“The Tenwood is supposedly a tract of forest about two days ride east and south of here that is approximately ten acres in size,” Vaelos offers. “Many sages and treasure seekers have been over every possible morsel of that land and not uncovered even a clue. The Wood Elves say the land is haunted by the banshee still and avoid the place at night, but no one else has ever proven these claims.”

"Perhaps they are looking in the wrong place," she offers. "I know of several instances in ancient stories where certain parts were changed through inaccuracies or were simply allegorical. But if the land is still haunted by her then the story is slightly off anyway. Perhaps someone should speak to this banshee and learn for themselves?"

-------------------------------------------

The man known as Rollester is becoming more obnoxious. And he seems to looking for a fight. These sorts of people are dangerous. He is apparently not only a fop but a bully, but without more information, it would be foolish to challenge him. Rovach, though seems to have no such qualms. Aesa intervenes and then the Captain returns, along with the innkeeper. Somehow this meeting seems to include Rollester. Erizhi decides that she will likely have nothing to do with any plans involving him.

“Always,” Rollester replies to the captain, and then seeing Torvin, he looks to Erizhi and adds, “Now’s your chance.” He then gives her a wink.

She sneers back at him. He knows something or thinks he does, that she does not. So she holds her tongue. 'Better to hold your words and be thought a fool, then to spew them forth and remove all doubt', they taught them at the temple. She wonders about him. What is his game and what import could he possibly have?

Rollester then turns fully to the innkeeper with a questioning look, to which the foul man receives a nod in reply. Taking a moment to get his girth under his feet, Rollester says, “Splendid.” He looks to the group and says, “Shall we then?”

Words start to flare again from Rovach and once more Aesa tries to deflate the tenseness of the situation.

"A meeting with the basilisk is looking better all the time...." Sir Rovach mutters to himself.

"Or the banshee," Erizhi adds, overhearing Rovach's words. She turns to the innkeeper Torvin, but also looks questioningly at Tamberlaine. "It has been a long night and getting longer. This friend of yours," she says with a drip of sarcasm to the words, "is part of this meeting? Can we just get to it then?" she adds impatiently. "I am loathe to be a part of anything that this 'man' might be involved in." Erizhi will refuse to sit, crossing her arms in front of her and striking a rather irritated pose.
