New Frontiers #3
Morning comes way too early for some of the guests in the Green Forest Inn. A knock at their door from Sherwood helps speed them along. It is still dark outside, but the sky to the east is beginning to lighten. A warm breakfast awaits the adventurers before heading out on their journey. The meal is quickly consumed.
Stepping out of the Inn the adventurers are met with a chilly morning. The sky is clear and the temperature is typical for late fall. While it is above freezing out, heavier garments will need to be worn until the sun has fully risen.
With Sherwood in the lead, the band makes its way through the pre-dawn City of Pyris. Already there is plenty of activity in the streets. Nearby inns bustle with the morning crowds. The markets are not yet up to their typical mid-day bustle, but already merchants are selling their wares. Several caravans are preparing to depart the city traveling either west to Elcadan or East to Crossroads.
The group reaches the city's Western Gate. Half a dozen guards are currently on duty. Several are questioning those who are attempting to enter the city. It looks like an incoming caravan. Not too far away, a squad of light calvary is preparing to depart on their morning patrol.
Waiting just inside the gate are Lords Validar and Corley. Each man is astride a riding horse while holding the reigns to his warhorse. At Lord Validar's direction, Sherwood and his charges are rushed through the guard checkpoint. Introductions are made and the group rides off down the High Road in the direction of Elcadan.
The group proceeds down the High Road until late morning. Reaching a side road, Sherwood leads the group off the main road, traveling in a roughly southwesterly direction. The side road is little better than a wide trail and the riders are forced to proceed single file.
The trail leads into a lightly forested area and skirts an area of rolling forested hills to left of the riders. The day remains clear, but on the chilly side as temperatures rise only into the low fifties. The day's ride comes to an end as the sun sets over the trees.
The day was free of any unusual incidents. A caravan making for Pyris was passed along the road, along with several Pyrisian patrols.
Locating a small grove of trees, Sherwood calls for camp to be made. However, instead of creating a traditional campsite, Sherwood only requests that wood for a fire be gathered. He then asks everyone to stand back.
For twenty minutes Sherwood walks about the grove speaking in a strange tongue and making unusual gestures. (Spellcasters can easily identify that Sherwood is casting a spell of the Alteration, Enchantment/Charm variety.)
Upon the completion of the spell, a door that was not there before appears. At Sherwood's direction everyone, including the mounts, are directed to pass through the door. Beyond the door is a crude stable where the horses are placed for the night.
Another door leads out of the stable into a crude common room. There is a large table with benches and a fireplace. Two doors lead off of this room, each going to a bunkroom with five beds in it.
"We'll be safe in this magical dwelling for the night. Only those most familiar with the forests will even note the dwelling's existence. The wood we gathered is for the fireplace. I suggest that we have a nice hot meal and get some rest. Tomorrow promises to be another long day."

That covers the first day of your journey, primarily through Pyrisian controlled lands. Use this post to introduce yourselves to the others you've just met. If everyone gets in, I'll update the post this weekend and get into something a little more exciting.
I’m also going to leave the previous posts open a few more days to tie up any loose ends.

On the Road Again
Grondar:
The knock on the door finds Grondar just finishing up his morning prayers. The promise of food and the aromas wafting up from the kitchens bring a smile to his face. Heading downstairs, he greets his new fellows cheerfully before breaking his fast in moderation.
A quick trip upstairs to collect his things, and he strides out to the stables. Walking along the row of steeds, he eyes them dubiously, unsure how well he'll manage the fickle beasts. Grondar seeks out Sherra and Laucian for their promised instruction in riding as soon as he's located the pony Sherwood provided. It proves to be shorter and squatter than the others, much like himself. With the help of his new friends, he is soon aboard the saddle, though still unsteady. Only once he's tentatively gotten the beast to walk about a bit does he load his gear on the pony.
Grondar pays little attention to the early morning bustle of the city and gives only the briefest of greetings to Validar and Corley, consumed as he is with the struggle to stay upright in the saddle and provide some minimal control over the pony's course. Anyone riding close can hear him murmuring prayers , beseaching Berronar to aid him in this, his greatest test.
By day's end, Grondar is beginning to feel a little more comfortable on the pony. His legs don't swing so frantically and he seems to be getting the hang of steering the animal. Still, he is most happy to dismount as Sherwood calls a halt to their day's travel. In fact, so joyful is he to be firmly on his own two feet that he gladly pitches in to collect several armfulls of firewood.
Grondar returns from his wood-gathering just in time to see Sherwood open his magical door. Setting down his load, Grondar walks about the door, viewing it from all sides. "What then is this?" he asks, half to himself. "Some sort of magic, I'd wager."
Sherwood describes his magical convenience and Grondar looks at him. "The blessings of Berronar upon you, mage. Should be a pleasant night indeed. I take then we have no need of setting watches?"
Grondar guides his pony inside and finds a place for her, though he has no knowledge of how to care for the horse so he just leaves her in a stall. He carries his gear to one of the bunkrooms, then begins moving the collected firewood inside.

On the Road Again
Kylie:
Not surprisingly, Kylie rolls out of bed late. As she quickly dresses, Kylie berates both herself for oversleeping and Sherwood in absentia for making them leave so early. The desire to change her memorized spells causes her to have to skip breakfast, though the innkeeper kindly provides her with some bread and cheese to eat as she rides.
Sprinting down the stairs, bags in hand, Kylie arrives in the stables as the others prepare to ride. Quickly stashing her gear in the horse's saddlebags, Kylie leaps aboard just in time to trail the others out of the stables.
Kylie enjoys the ride for the most part, munching her bread and cheese as they pass through the town and head down the road. Her only regret is that she didn't get the opportunity to relieve any of the wealthier residents of the Pyris of their excess possessions. As they continue on, she is occasionally seen to snicker at Grondar's pathetic attempts to ride his pitiful pony. Similarly, she carefully eyes the passing caravan, wondering idly what valuables it might hold. Otherwise, she admires the pleasant surroundings and rides in the midst of the group as though she hasn't a care in the world.
Sherwood's spell casting garners intense interest from Kylie. She watches him carefully, attempting to identify familiar elements of the spell and whether it might be one she could be capable of learning someday. Once the spell is finished, Kylie happily goes inside, selecting a bunk and stashing her gear underneath. She then returns to the stables and begins to rub down her horse and provide it with hay, humming tunelessly as she does so.

VALIDAR -
As the group from the Green Forest Inn approaches Pyris City's Main Western Gate, they see two men in armor sitting upon horses, with warhorses nearby. One of the men is conversing with the squadron commander of the light cavalry. The squadron is forming up a short distance away. A pair of attendants stands nearby.
The man speaking to the squadron leader wears a suit of plate armor. The armor is apparently expensive and two-toned in color, parts of it blued to a darker hue and all of it shining brightly. The edges of the armor are trimmed with bright brass. Over it he wears a tabard with a field of interlocking blue and silver triangles, the blue starting from his top right shoulder and the silver from his left hip. Emblazoned on the field is a black griffon, raised as if for battle. His claws and teeth are red. At the top of the tabard is a black symbol much like an inverted castle rampart. A visored full helm can be seen on the riding horse's saddlebags.
Lord Validar is a tall, powerfully built man with closely cropped brown hair and sporting a mustache and goatee adorning his handsome features. At his arm is a large shield emblazoned with the same coat of arms as his tabard. In his other arm is a long lance, tipped with a dark blue pinion, raised majestically into the cold morning air. A gem-studded pommel juts out from the scabbard at his side.
As he sees the assemblage approach, Validar will hand the reigns of his warhorse to one attendant and then his lance. He then rides the short distance to greet Sherwood.
"Hail, Lord Sherwood," Validar states with his arm raised in greeting. "I trust you are well this morning!"
"Greetings to each of you who have joined us this fine morning. I trust we shall all meet with much glory and honor. I am Lord Validar, the first and only son of the Baron of this fine land."

Conquer or Die!
Corley
Corley:
Corley looks on with great interest as the other members of this expedition approaches. “Hail comrades! I am Lord Corley, a friend to the Baron’s family. May our adventure meet with great success!”
Corley is a young man in his late teens. He’s just a tad taller than Validar with reddish blonde hair and green eyes. Corley is a clean-shaven handsome young man with a muscular build.
Once out on the road, Corley will engage in conversation with his new comrades in arms. What an unusual collection of persons Lord Sherwood has assembled. Corley is pleased to see the number of ladies among the group. Three humans and an elf maiden. The priestess of Azrella, Ivy I believe her name was, is particularly fetching.
Rounding out the group is a trio of men, in addition to Sherwood himself. A human, an elf, and a dwarf.
The days ride is a long one and Corley is more than eager to stop for the night. He too is amazed at the dwelling that Sherwood conjures up. He leads his mounts into the stables and then visits the men’s bunkroom to remove his armor.
After dinner, Corley goes out to the stable to tend to his horses. He finds that one of the women is already there. Kylie was her name.
“Pleasant evening, Lady Kylie. Magnificent animals, are they not?”
Corley will care to his horses while conversing with the young lady.

Lilia:
The Elf Maiden is already awake when the knock comes to her door. Thankfully, she needs only a few hours of rest each night to feel refreshed. She has been studying her spellbook for the last two hours by candlelight. Feeling confined and cooped up in this human Inn, Lilia is more than happy to be on the move.
Sampling only some fruit and nuts of the morning meal, Lilia is out of the door to the stable. Her pony is right where she left him the day before. Lilia’s mount seems to be in fine shape after being cared for by humans. Her gear is stored and Lilia climbs up into the small saddle.
Drawing her cloak around her to stave off the cold, Lila follows the others through the human city. She rides near the middle of the pack for protection and to not stand out so much. When the human nobles are introduced, Lilia will simply nod in their direction.
Finally, the band is out of that confining city and on the road. Even the human paved road makes Lilia feel better. Her elven eyes dart about, taking in all that she sees.
Then we start to head off into a lightly wooded area. It is nothing like an elven forest, but Lilia finds it to be comforting. Once warm enough, the elf maiden throws her hood back and lets the sun warm her face.
During the ride Lilia will mostly keep to herself and only speak should someone speak to her first. She gives the dwarf a wide berth, fearing that his gyrations may cause an accident! Her bow is kept within reach for easy access should it be needed.
The day's long ride comes to an end and Sherwood Elf-Friend works his wondrous magic. While the magic dwelling feels a bit claustrophobic, it is better than sleeping outside on the cold ground. Lilia partakes of her collection of fruits and vegetables before retiring to her bunk for the night.

Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!
Ivy
Ivy:
The priestess is all ready to go when she hears the knocks out in the hallway. Exiting her quaint room, Ivy is already dressed and is carrying her meager gear.
“Pleasant morning!”, she will happily greet each of her comrades as she comes across them. “May the Blue Lady safely guide our day's travel.”
The tantalizing morning meal is quickly consumed. It warms Ivy inside, making the upcoming exposure to the cold more bearable. Ivy will quickly say a prayer of thanks for this fine meal and tip the Innkeeper and his family for a most pleasant stay.
Out in the stable, Ivy is shown a riding horse that will serve as her mount. Close by, Grondar is helped onto his pony. Ivy can’t help but chuckle seeing the dwarf trying to ride the mount. “Best of luck, friend Grondar! My the road not rise up to meet you!”
Then it’s off through the city and to the western gates. The last of our little band is waiting there, the mysterious Lords Validar and Corley. Seeing both men in full battle gear indicates that both are warriors. That is something of a relief to Ivy, meaning she should not be needed for front line combat.
“Well met, Lord Validar,” Ivy will say in greeting. Ivy stands about 5’5” in height with a slender build. She has shoulder length brown hair and matching eyes. She’s extremely attractive and there is usually a bright smile on her face. “May the Blue Lady bless us in our endeavor.”
Ivy will then introduce herself to Lord Corley. “Well met, Lord Corley! A pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
The daylong ride seems to pass quickly, but the minor aches and pains in Ivy’s body suggests otherwise. She is happy when the day's ride comes to a halt and Sherwood creates his magical dwelling.
“A most handy spell, Sherwood. And it will make for a much more pleasant evening!” Ivy will help out as best as she can in getting the evening meal prepared. Cooking was never her strong suit, but Ivy is more than happy to pitch in.
Later, she’ll happily chat with those around the table before eventually growing sleepy. After saying good night to her new friends, Ivy will locate her bunk and quickly fall asleep wondering what new challenges will come in the morning.

For the glory of the Blue Lady!
Sherwood
Sherwood:
Sherwood awakens in his private room in the Green Forest Inn exactly when he wanted to. He's stayed in this room many times over the years, more or less becoming his home while in Pyris. The room has been exclusively rented out to him during all this time and is magically secured against intrusion.
Rising, Sherwood lights a candle and shuffles through the papers on his desk. Locating a copy of his traveling spellbook, Sherwood quickly rememorizes the magicks he spent the day before. That task complete, Sherwood departs the room, the door magically sealing shut behind him.
He can smell the aroma of the morning meal being cooked all the way on the second floor of the Inn. First he knocks on everyone's door, making sure that they are up. "Up and at them, Kylie! No loafing today!"
Once everyone has eaten and has chosen their mounts, Sherwood leads the rag-tag band through the dark streets of Pyris. As expected, the last two members of this expedition are awaiting him at the Western Gate.
The first few hours are easy enough as the band travels across the road to Elcadan. The route Sherwood has selected is not the most direct, but it is the quickest. A straight path from Pyris to Twin Forks would involve many days travel over rolling forested hills and add another day or two to their journey. Instead they travel west on the road, making good time, until they pass the hills. Then the band will turn southward towards Twin Forks.
While on the road, Sherwood will take the time to ride beside each member of the expedition and see how they are doing.
While riding beside Kylie, Sherwood will say, "How are you this morning, young lady? I trust you didn't do any finding in Pyris. They frown on that sort of thing."
Once entering the forest, Sherwood will let Laucian take the point. The path they are following is easy enough to follow, but the elven ranger would be able to pick up any potential trouble they may come across.
The day passes simply enough without incident. Locating an ideal clearing, Sherwood asks to be given plenty of room to cast his spell. Upon the completion of his spell, a temporary magical dwelling has been created for the group to rest in tonight.
To those mages in the group, Sherwood will add, "This spell is Leomund's Hidden Lodge and is very handy for travel. It is of the fifth level of magicks and an improvement over the fourth level Leomund's Secure Shelter. Come let us rest for the evening. Tomorrow's ride shall be another long one."
Sherwood noticeably cringes being called that. He makes a point to correct Validar in the future on how much he hates being called by a title. "Validar. I see that you are ready to go." Introductions are quickly made and we're off."Hail, Lord Sherwood," Validar calls out his arm raised in greeting. "I trust you are well this morning!"

"That is correct, Grondar. The doors to the house are magically locked. We should have a trouble free evening. It is the only way to travel while out in the wilderness."Sherwood describes his magical convenience and Grondar looks at him. "The blessings of Berronar upon you, mage. Should be a pleasant night indeed. I take then we have no need of setting watches?"

VALIDAR -
“Well met, Lord Validar,” Ivy will say in greeting. “May the Blue Lady bless us in our endeavor.”
Validar will note that Ivy is a follower of Azrella. "Your presence will be most useful, I am certain, Ivy of Azrella. The healing arts of your order are legendary."
Later, when there is a moment to speak to Ivy alone, Validar will comment, "While I am very pleased to have a follower of Azrella among our ranks, I must respectfully ask that you refrain from the casting of any spells upon my person without my prior permission. Unless I miss my guess, I am certain that you will have plenty of opportunities to practice your art with the others."
After all the introductions are made, Validar will take up his warhorse's reigns and his lance once more and direct the guards to allow the group immediate passage.
Validar will ride at the front of the group, spending time talking with Corley and Sherwood and whomever else takes time to ride in the lead. When the group is forced to ride single file, Validar will allow the others to all pass and take the rear position. From there he can watch the progression of the others and be able to counter any attacks, in the unlikely event they should occur. While in Pyris-controlled lands, the odds are much less likely of an attack. Tomorrow everyone will have to be more cautious.
When Sherwood calls for time to make camp, it makes sense as the sun is starting to set. Validar would liked to have continued, but travelling through the forest in the dark would just be inviting trouble. And judging by the road-weary looks of some of the group, we have halted none too soon.
Validar is not particularly impressed by the arch-mage's creation of their night's dwelling as some of the group are, but he is quite thankful for it nonetheless. "It may be quite a bit cruder than the accommodations at the castle, but it certainly is better than sleeping on the ground. An effective and quickly erected camp, Lord Sherwood. How long will the edifice last?"
After temporarily stabling his horses, Validar will claim one of the beds near a wall. He will remove his armor and carefully stow it, leaving his swordbelt about his waist. As others see to the evening meal's preparation, Validar will tend to his horses. He will then see that any of the others who don't seem to know the process of preparing their horses for the evening will be unsaddled and fed, with gear stowed.
Once the meal is completed, Validar will eat heartily, while conversing with whomever is talkative and doesn't retire immediately or head off to the stables. He will then retire and sleep very soundly. In the morning, Validar will rise quite early and start the involved process of preparing himself and his two mounts to depart.

Conquer or Die!
back on the road...
Sherra:
Sherra was aware she had to get up early, but apparently the luxury of sleeping on a bed after so many days on the road lulled her body to being a bit too comfortable. She did manage to have partially woken up when the knock on the door came.
After pulling on her leather, she expertly secures her weapons so they would not be seen to any but the most scrutinizing searcher, well except for her bow, but that remains secured to her mare anyway.
After eating lightly, Sherra goes to the stables and does a quick look over her mare, finding everything in its place. As she tries to figure out where exactly to put the extra quivers of arrows Sherwood provided, Grondar approaches her. She smiles easily and helps him in his nerve-racking task of learning to ride. She offers the dwarf several pointers, but is not sure Grondar hears them as he seems to be holding on for dear life.
Finally she mounts her steed and joins the group as we travel out of Pyris, keeping close proximity to Grondar to offer words of encouragement and to be there to grab the reins should it prove neccessary. The meeting of the two warriors surprises Sherra just a bit as their heavy and decorative armor is not what she was expecting. Definitely a death sentence if we were onboard a ship she thinks to herself.
She keeps alert on the ride, especially once we leave the High Road. Sherra falls back towards the rear of the group once we are forced to ride single file and notices Validar securely in the rear. She regards that for several minutes as she rides in front of him and then finally turns in the saddle to speak to him.
"I had an encounter with two men who were more than eager to try to remove me of my possessions and my breath just before arriving at Pyris. Although I put an end to their nonsense easily enough, I still believe caution is in order in case we encounter others with such delusions."
Sherra will turn back around and continue to remain vigilant even though we are so close to patrolled lands and travelling in a larger group. Her experiences remind her that desperate or fanactical men do not pay much heed to things like odds.
She welcomes the evening stop and is marvelled at the magic Sherwood wields. Sherra notices some of the mixed reactions by others of the group, but she has not seen enough raw magic on display to be jaded or bored by the experience.
After eating and tending to her mare, she will watch how the others are reacting and interacting with each other. She will also make sure Grondar is not suffering too horribly from a full day's ride before she claims a bed as her own and stretches out as best possible to await the coming sleep.

Laucian
Laucian is finishing getting dressed as he hears a knocking at the door. "I'll be down Momentarily." as he gathers his things placing them in his saddlebags. Before heading down he places his bow and the arrows Sherwood has given him in his quiver. He gathers his things, making sure not to forget his dagger, and heads to the common room. "Good morning all. Hope you slept well." He will eat sparingly of the meal provided, then head to the Stables with his gear.
Upon reaching his Horse's stall he will get him ready for the ride and place his saddlebags, saddle, blanket on him. He rechecks every strap making sure that nothing is wrong. Petting Starfire's head, "You look to be in good spirits."
Remembering his promise to Grondor, He will go to his pony help him with his saddle and other gear. "A fine animal, it will treat you well." He says with a smile while checking the straps on the saddle.
He mounts his horse and settles into the saddle. Upon which his horse begins to prance in place ready to hit the open road and leave the confines of the city behind. Drawing his cloak around him, the party heads towards the gates. Laucian looks around at the early bustle and forgets it as easy as it is seen.
Upon reaching the gate Sherwood extends pleasantries with two men, Lord Validar and Corley. So these are the men of which he spoke of. Laucian will look them over in turn. The armor of Validar catches his eye, and the thought of a decorated bird comes to his mind. He will introduce himself, "Good day, Lord Validar and Lord Corley."
Laucian can't help but to be relieved that they are on the open road again. Occasionally he can be seen riding at Grondor's side asking him how he is doing and saying words of encouragement to him. He will move alongside Lilia and speak in his native tongue, "How are you faring this fine morning?" Upon entering the forest Sherwood calls him to the point of the party. Taking his bow out and placing it in his left hand, he will begin to scan the woods ahead and sides, keeping his ears alert.
Upon reaching the clearing Sherwood calls for camp and to gather firewood. Laucian dismounts and finds a clear spot. Taking out his dagger he will make a small hole in the ground. Reaching into a pouch at his belt he takes a small seed and plants it. He begins to pray to Ehlonna,so that it may grow strong and tall.
Afterward he will return to the group and enter the magical dwelling. He will reply to Ivy's comment of a pleasant evening "What could be more pleasant than sleeping under the stars, in a beautiful forest?" he will ask this seriously but no intention to start a fight.
When they enter the dwelling he will see to his horse that it has hay for the night and remove his equipment. He will in turn help Grondor in taking care of his pony. Afterward he will stow his gear and begin working on arrow shafts and eat sparingly of the meal.

Chareos
Waking up at the crack of dawn was always hard for Chareos. Today was no exception. A knock is heard at his door, waking him." Ugh, Ill be up in a minute....." He slowly rolls out of bed and throws on his cloths. He quickly gathers his gear and heads down to breakfast. Oh how it would feel so good to stay in bed and have breakfast brought up, but alas this wasn't to be.
He comes down the stairs and manages a large yawn, "Morning." He will eat whatever is put in front of him, not really knowing what it is because he can't fully see. He will gather his gear after he eats and head for the stables.
Upon reaching the stables he will ask where the water trough is and proceed to it and dunk his head in it. Lifting his head out of the icy water he shouts, "Ah that's cold! Sure to wake you up at this awful hour." Fixing his hair he will find his mount, get it ready and join the others.
When everyone is accounted for we set out towards the gates of the city. He doesn't pay much attention to the activity around the group. Upon reaching the gate two men are introduced Lord Validar and Corley. He has heard of some of the exploits of Validar but hasn't heard of Lord Corley. His first impressions are good as he looks over the fighters.
We reach the outskirts of town where it is a bit chillier than expected, for him anyway. He clutches his cloak around him trying to keep warm. As several patrols and one caravan pass he will nod in greeting but say nothing.
Sherwood calls for a halt and to make camp. Chareos dismounts and begins to gather some wood when he notices Sherwood walking in a circle muttering accent words. He will stop gathering firewood to watch his spell casting. "That is a handy spell, I wish I was able to do that."
He will bring his gear, firewood and mount into the magical dwelling. He will Tend to his mount then stow his gear. Upon entering the common room of the dwelling he will store the firewood near the fireplace and begin to help with dinner unless shooed away. After dinner he will help clean up then sit at the table and take out a vibrant purple prism and begin to store spells within it. Afterward rememorize the spells he put to memory in the Ioun Stone he will make for bed in the hopes of getting up early.

Conversing with Sherra about bandits
VALIDAR -
She(rra) keeps alert on the ride, especially once we leave the High Road.
"Our light cavalry squadrons are quite effective at keeping anything more than the odd isolated assault from occurring within our boundaries, especially on the western borders. On the High Road attacks are very rare indeed. However, within Elcadan it is a different story as you rather unfortunately discovered. There is talk that Elcadan actually endorses the banditry and I wouldn't put it past members of their Merchant Guilds to do such things as a way to help stamp out competition."
"I would not worry much about banditry within our borders. Once we are further into Elcadan tomorrow it may be a much different situation. After all, we are headed to one of their bases of operation. However, I would not expect much of an attack unless it were a very organized assault or ambush completed with superior numbers. Were it to be otherwise, Lord Corley and myself could likely handle an unorganized attack of at least double our own number. Not to mention the skills and combat prowess of the rest of our newly assembled band."
Validar regards the bow at the side of the black mare that Sherra rides before him. She is lightly armored and the more he notices seems to be rather well armed.
"So, Sherra, we seem to have much time to pass. How did you manage to join our group? And what skills do you possess? Other than the bow I see. Do you care to share your tale?" Validar will continue to keep alert for any possible danger while they talk.

Conquer or Die!
VALIDAR -
As dinner is winding down, Validar will speak to Sherwood regarding plans for the next day's travels.
"It may behoove us to be prepared for possible bandit activity, if not tomorrow, then certainly for the final day of our travels. It would be wise to be prepared now rather than when the time is too late. I am not worried about the normal bandit assault. Any two or three of us could certainly drive off a poorly organized bandit attack."
"The event we need to be prepared for is the unlikely possibility that we are intentionally ambushed. Do you have plans for this eventuality?"

Conquer or Die!
Ivy
Ivy:
"You are most kind, sir. We Azrellians do take pride in our ability to heal the sick and injured. Our order is a peaceful one, save against the undead that plague the world. Against such foes we are as vicious as any other fighter. Should we encounter such foes during this mission, I will insist upon being the first to engage them in battle. Lady Azrella has graced me with several special abilities to battle such creatures. I am virtually immune to many of their debilitating affects."Validar will note that Ivy is a follower of Azrella. "Your presence will be most useful, I am certain, Ivy of Azrella. The healing arts of your order are legendary."
Ivy is slightly taken about by Lord Validar's request. "Lord Validar, the only spells that I would cast upon anyone without their consent is to heal their wounds. The only time I would do so is if you were not conscious and your life was in jeopardy. It would be most irresponsible for me to allow someone to perish when I could save them. You should also pass your request onto both Grondar and Laucian, as both are also priests.Later, when there is a moment to speak to Ivy alone, Validar will comment, "While I am very pleased to have a follower of Azrella among our ranks, I must respectfully ask that you refrain from the casting of any spells upon my person without my prior permission. Unless I miss my guess, I am certain that you will have plenty of opportunities to practice your art with the others."
Ivy will gently chuckle at that remark. "I would tend to agree, Laucian. However, it seems like a more enjoyable experience on a much warmer night."Laucian will reply to Ivy's comment of a pleasant evening "What could be more pleasant than sleeping under the stars, in a beautiful forest?"
For the glory of the Blue Lady!
Sherwood
Sherwood:
"Given the forces assembled here, a logical plan of action would be for me, Corley, and yourself to directly engage the enemy, backed up by Ivy, Grondar, and Chareos. Kylie, Laucian, Lilia, and Sherra would provide support fire with their bows. Our middle ranks would also serve to protect the bowers, moving to where needed as such a conflict dictates."
"I've heard of your knack for strategy from my uncle. What sort of plan of action do you propose?"
"The spell will last a minimum of 12 hours, Validar. And please, I prefer to simply be called Sherwood. I find titles to be very cumbersome."It may be quite a bit cruder than the accommodations at the castle, but it certainly is better than sleeping on the ground. An effective and quickly erected camp, Lord Sherwood. How long will the edifice last?"
"You will be able to given time, Chareos. That's the one thing about Lady Mystra's gift. No matter how much you know about magic, there is always more to learn."Sherwood calls for a halt and to make camp. Chareos dismounts and begins to gather some wood when he notices Sherwood walking in a circle muttering accent words. He will stop gathering firewood to watch his spell casting. "That is a handy spell, I wish I was able to do that."
"I agree. The first day was always going to be the easiest of this trek. My primary plan was to simply keep my eyes open and avoid any potential ambush sites. However, a plan of action should an ambush occur is highly desirable.""It may behoove us to be prepared for possible bandit activity, if not tomorrow, then certainly for the final day of our travels. It would be wise to be prepared now rather than when the time is too late. I am not worried about the normal bandit assault.

Lilia:
The Elf Maiden will greet Laucian when he arrives in the common room. Her fellow clansman seems in good spirits this morning. Perhaps he is also eager to be gone from this human city.
When Laucian is sent to scout ahead of us as we travel through the forest, Lilia will move closer to the front, offering her own sharp eyesight to the task. Hopefully this mission will be completed in just a few more days, then Lilia can return home.

A slight smile will come to Lilia’s face when Laucian rides beside her. “As well as can be expected, clansman. It is good to be out of that city. Far too drab and closed in for my tastes. The chill in the air is unpleasant, but I will survive. Thank you for your concern. You seem to be in your element on this day.”He will move alongside Lilia and speak in his native tongue, "How are you faring this fine morning?"

Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!
Corley
Corley:
When the rest of the adventuring band arrives at the city gate, Corley will dismount and greet everyone.
If permitted, Corley will exchange similar introductions with the other ladies of our band.
When the time comes to make camp, Corley catches Laucian seemingly planting something. His curiously getting the best of him, Corley will respectfully approach.
“Forgive my curiosity, good sir, but what was that you planted?”

“The honor is mine, milady.” Corley will then gallantly kiss the back of the fair maiden’s hand. “While I sincerely hope that we will need little of your healing arts on this mission, I am most pleased by your presence.”Ivy will then introduce herself to Lord Corley. “Well met, Lord Corley! A pleasure to make your acquaintance.”

“A pleasant day to you too, good sir. May our mission meet with honor and success!”Laucian will introduce himself, "Good day, Lord Validar and Lord Corley."

We fight for King and Country!
VALIDAR -
IVY - "You are most kind, sir. I am virtually immune to many of their debilitating affects."
"I will certainly keep that fact in mind in the future, fair Ivy. Clerics are well-known to be effective against the unliving and I was aware that Azrella's followers were even stronger in those powers, but I was not aware of your immunities. We will be sure to allow you first engagement, but be certain that as long as we ride together, I will not be far behind you."
-------------------
Ivy is slightly taken about by Lord Validar's request. "Lord Validar, the only spells that I would cast upon anyone without their consent is to heal their wounds. The only time I would do so is if you were not conscious and your life was in jeopardy. It would be most irresponsible for me to allow someone to perish when I could save them. You should also pass your request onto both Grondar and Laucian, as both are also priests.
Validar regards Ivy's amazed look. He is not surprised by it, in fact he rather expected such, especially from one of Azrella's flock. "I have my own method of healing, fair Ivy, if that puts your mind at rest a bit more. The only time anyone cast healing spells upon my person was after we slayed the Green Dragon, Woodstalker. And it was not immediately at my behest. Death holds no fear for one who has already fallen in battle and been buried."
Validar will take the time to mention his dislike of spells directed on his person to Grondar and Laucian as well.

VALIDAR -
BACKTRACKING A BIT - Laucian will introduce himself, "Good day, Lord Validar and Lord Corley."
"And a good day to you as well, Laucian. By your garb the obvious statement would be to say that you are a woodsman. We will have much use for your talents I am certain, my new Elfin friend."
-----------------------
NOW BACK TO THE CAMP - "It may be quite a bit cruder than the accommodations at the castle, but it certainly is better than sleeping on the ground. An effective and quickly erected camp, Lord Sherwood. How long will the edifice last?"
"The spell will last a minimum of 12 hours, Validar. And please, I prefer to simply be called Sherwood. I find titles to be very cumbersome.
Although he doesn't much show it, Validar is probably as surprised by Sherwood's statement now, as Ivy was of his own earlier. "As you wish, Sherwood. I merely meant proper respect of your station." Lord Sherwood's title was hereditary and his bloodline could be traced to Victor the 1st's Arch-Mage. While his title was not landed, Sherwood was still a member of the nobility. Validar would never completely understand this odd request, but he would honor it, at least while they were not at court.
------------------
"I agree. The first day was always going to be the easiest of this trek. My primary plan was to simply keep my eyes open and avoid any potential ambush sites. However, a plan of action should an ambush occur is highly desirable."
"Your basic plan is sound, but perhaps a bit too basic, if you forgive my frankness. This would work well against a normal attack, but not necessarily against an ambush, especially a two-tiered or three-tiered assault. It would force each individual to make vital decisions in the course of battle, perhaps without all the relevant information available. We could be cut off from each other and weaknesses exploited."
"My first question would be what spells our clerics and mages have at their disposal. Wide area effect spells are very useful in counter-attacking an ambush, as are any defensive abilities."
"The most probable way to defeat such a counter attack as proposed would be for the bandits to first spring the initial ambush and attack. Then withdraw the initial thrust and draw the fighters forward and then attack with one or two flanking assaults to pin the front rank and hit our missile troops with their own top melee troops."
"To counter this eventuality, I would propose that Corley, Grondar and myself would handle the initial direct engagement. Meanwhile, Lilia, Laucian, and yourself would make your own flanking move, perhaps even splitting up to take advantage of each of your forest skills." Validar enacts a rough example on the table with whatever implements are at hand to show visually what he is explaining.
"Each of you is also a spellcaster of one form or another and therefore able to react in a number of ways to changing situations, whether that requires bows or magicks. That would allow Ivy, Kylie, Sherra and Chareos to act as a stationary ranged force. Ivy could cast her defensive spells, Chareos his offensive, while Kylie and Sherra would use their ranged weapons. Kylie also able to cast spells, if needed." (Before anyone wonders how Validar knows so much of everyone's abilities, he did have access to Jallarzi's information while she was at the castle.)
"This gives us flexibility to deal with situations as they may arise and should the bandits be expecting us. Laucian and Lilia should continue to ride near the front and stay on the lookout for trouble. Their Elven eyesight and foresty skills are just the thing we need. Corley, Ivy and Grondar should be next in some order. Kylie and Chareos behind them and Sherra and myself in the rear. This will spread our abilites throughout the column and not bunch our intended sub-groups overmuch. Of course, Sherwood, you would fit into that column arrangement where ever you preferred."
"Does anyone have any problems with this recommendation?"

“As well as can be expected, clansman. It is good to be out of that city. Far too drab and closed in for my tastes. The chill in the air is unpleasant, but I will survive. Thank you for your concern. You seem to be in your element on this day.”
"I share your sentiments. It is good to feel the wind in my hair and the familiar sound of the wrestling of trees. The chill in the air is a minor hindrance, for it could be far worse. In some ways it feels like I am in our forest once again, for everything about this land seems similar to it.".
As I finish my praying and take out my wineskin to water the newly planted seed Corley approaches.
“Forgive my curiosity, good sir, but what was that you planted?”
Laucian will look up at Corley, "You shall receive no forgiveness, for you have done nothing wrong my friend," he says with a smile. "I have just planted the seeds of a Yew tree. Followers of the Lady of the forest choose a species of plant to protect and to see them endure as a whole, among other duties."
When Validar comes to me concerning the use of magic on his person, Laucian is a little puzzled by this, but respectful of his wishes. "If you don't wish to be healed by magical means that is your choice and I shall honor your request. Though I am also trained in healing, if you would prefer that method."
Backing up to the gates
"Your eyes do not deceive you, for I am a woodsmen and also a Priest of Ehlonna. I look forward to getting to know my comrades in arms."
At the dwelling
When Validar begins explaining his tactics, Laucian will stop for a few moments and see what he proposes. " I have no problem with what Validar proposes. Though I do have on question that was overlooked at the inn." Looking between Sherwood and Validar, "This Lothar that we are to apprehend, Do you have a description of him so we don't unknowingly dispatch him in combat?"
Afterward he will find his bed and pray for Ehlonna's blessing and go to sleep hoping to wake early and ready his gear and mount. And anyone else that may need help.

Sherra:
Sherra seems lost in thought for a while, her normally easy smile gone from her face. There comes a point where Validar might begin to wonder if that is all she will be offering, and when she turns back to sit in the saddle properly once more, he knows it indeed is all of her tale for today.
Sherra will permit Corley his gallant introduction. She smiles at his delight in meeting the women of the adventuring band. Sherra can not recall anyone in her past ever conducting themselves like Corley has thus far.If permitted, Corley will exchange similar introductions with the other ladies of our band.
Sherra will turn once more in the saddle considering it to be overly rude to respond to Validar and not be facing him. "I have spent all of my life that I can remember on the seas. That is where the majority of my skills originate from.""So, Sherra, we seem to have much time to pass. How did you manage to join our group? And what skills do you possess? Other than the bow I see. Do you care to share your tale?" Validar will continue to keep alert for any possible danger while they talk.

Chareos
After dinner Validar and Sherwood start discussing combat tactics. Chareos will secure his prism and put it in his belt pouch and begin to follow both men's description of possible battle formations.
"As for spells at my disposal, Almost all of them are offensive minded. Though I do have a few that can be used defensively." If asked what spells he can possibly use he will recite the ones he has in memory as well as in his traveling book.
"Does anyone have any problems with this recommendation?"
" I would have to agree with Validar. His plan looks to be sound for the most part. But after all these are men who don't always stand their ground, which raises a concern in my eyes. What would you suggest we do if they use hit and run tactics?" Chareos will sit quietly and add comments as he feels compeled to.
Upon hearing Laucian's question Chareos is slightly taken back. How could he be so negligent in not asking such an important question. Listening to Validar's words of Lothar's foretold death on a sword blade somewhat touches him for in his new comrade's eyes he surely deserves death.
When meeting is completed he will approach Lord Validar, "A moment Lord Validar. Excuse my curiousity but when you spoke of Lothar's death, You seemed to have a motivation than many of the others do not possess. I can't help but wonder if you know this noble that may have suffered by Lothar's hand."

"My experience in dealing with these types of opponents would indicate that the area effect spells would be most effective: Web, Sleep, Flaming Sphere. Magic Missile is always useful in combat. Mirror Image and Shield could be effective defenses for yourself should we find ourselves in battle with large numbers," Validar offers to Chareos. "I must admit that I am not familiar with every bit of magick that you mention, but I have been trained in the use of battle magic on the field."
" I would have to agree with Validar. His plan looks to be sound for the most part. But after all these are men who don't always stand their ground, which raises a concern in my eyes. What would you suggest we do if they use hit and run tactics?"
Validar looks over at Chareos with a slight smile. He is pleased that some of the group have an understanding of combat and tactics as well as an interest in their future battles. "Actually that tactic is already addressed with these formations, Chareos. If the bandits make any contact at all, then we should have the advantage in pursuit. We have 2 elves and Sherwood who is a fine woodsman himself to hunt them down and drive them back toward the other two pursuing groupings. The bandits may not be all mounted. In this case, the intent would be to try and isolate a small portion of the group and eliminate them."
"In addition, they should hopefully find some indication of the bandits passing in our normal travels. I do not believe we are dealing with ones whose skills would allow them to attack us without our seeing them. We have those with spellcraft ability spread throughout the travelling column, in order to exact a quick counter should we need it. We are not traveling through heavy forest, so there is little worry of a completely unseen ambush. I think we should be confident in relying on our Elven companions to make certain of that, should we not?"

Validar pauses for a moment as he considers his next words. "Friend Chareos, you are quite observant. My motivation to see this mission completed quickly and satisfactorily is indeed much stronger than anyone else here. And I promise you, at some point in the not so distant future, Lothar will perish, preferably by my own sword. The noble of which you speak was none other than one of my own immediate family and a member of the ruling house of Pyris."

Kylie:
When the two warriors join the party as foretold by Sherwood, Kylie can't help comparing the one known as Validar to a strutting peacock. The ornate, flashy armor and overbearing manner don't sit well with her at all. At least he's attractive, so he's not a complete loss. Of course, his companion is also good-looking...
"Kylie Lanthorn of Elcadan," she'll say by way of introduction. Any more will have to wait until later. She allows Corley to kiss her hand in the same manner as he did the other women in the group, though she's not particularly comfortable with this level of familiarity from someone she's just meeting for the first time. As a result, her posture and manner are somewhat stiff for the remainder of the meeting.
Sherwood comes and rides beside her for a little while as they travel. His question brings a smirk to her face. "Last I heard, Uncle Sherwood, it's frowned upon pretty much everywhere. But no, I didn't find the time or opportunity to explore the opportunities Pyris had to offer."
The one called Lord Corley approaches her in the stables that evening. She fears that he will want to kiss her hand once again, but he doesn't repeat the gesture, much to her relief. Once again, Kylie can't help but appreciate his looks, though she doesn't give obvious sign of it. She continues her work as they converse. "Yes, they seem like fine horses, though I must admit to not being much of an expert. I only learned to ride a couple years ago. What little exposure I have had to such steeds comes exclusively from Jallarzi's stable." While at first glance Kylie appears human, Corley will notice hints of elven heritage in her features as they talk.
Once she is done in the stables, Kylie will assist in the preparation of the evening meal as she has some skill in that area. As they work, she'll chat with Ivy and anyone else who chooses to assist.
For the most part, the discussion of tactics thoroughly bores Kylie. She will, however, listen just enough to have a basic idea of what is expected of her. Since it seems to consist of standing and firing her bow and throwing a few spells, there don't seem to be any real surprises. Kylie makes no mention of what spells she has available.
Laucian's question regarding Lothar's appearance brings a slightly-embarrassed chuckle from Kylie. Such an obvious question, and no one thought to ask it until now. She shakes her head. We are all such neophytes. How will we ever survive?

A description for those new to the party:
Standing only 5'1" and weighing in at barely 105 pounds, Kylie is small even for a half-elfen female. At first glance, she appears human and quite young, perhaps mid-teens. Closer examination of her features reveals some indications of her elven heritage as well. She has a slight, boyish build rather than the fuller figure of a grown woman, and a pretty face with a shy, charming smile. Her hair is black and worn short - though it normally covers her pointed ears - and piercing green eyes peer out from the hood of her cloak. The cloak is obviously of excellent quality and tends to blend with the background in a subtle way that seems intended to fool the eye. Beneath the cloak, one can just make out a deep burgundy or forest green tunic over charcoal grey leggings or breeches. Soft black boots complete the outfit. A pair of metallic bracers can be spotted on each forearm, and occasional glimpses of one or more daggers situated about her body can be seen when the cloak is brushed back. When travelling, she bears a backpack, a quiver, and a short bow of fine elven manufacture.
On the Road Again...
Grondar:
Ivy's comment in the stable elicits an embarrassed smile from the dwarven priest. "Thank you, Ivy. My wish matches your own."
As they ride, Grondar appreciates the frequent advice and assistance from his two riding instructors, and thanks each of them several times over during the day.
Once inside the magical residence, Grondar is unaware of Laucian and Validar's efforts in caring for his pony. He is too busy inside the bunkhouse rubbing his nether regions in an attempt to relieve himself of the results of the day's ride. Fortunately, he has the native toughness of his people and is able to sit and join the others for dinner.
It is at this time - now that he is no longer astride that hideous beast - that Grondar finally gets the opportunity to introduce himself to their two new companions: the lords Validar and Corley. "Greetings, my lords. I am Grondar Foehammer, priest of the Mother of Safety, Berronar Truesilver. May her protective hand guard and guide you in these endeavors."
Validar takes the opportunity to tell Grondar of his preference regarding spells. Grondar pauses to consider this information. "Hmm... I can withhold healing spells if that is your wish, as long as doing so will not result in your death. The Revered Mother would never accept such a decision. However, I am also skilled in non-magical healing, so perhaps that will be sufficient in all but the direst of circumstances.
"On the other hand, I have some few spells useful in combat situations which affect everyone around me. It would not be acceptable to deny everyone else Berronar's blessing, just because you happen to be nearby."
Unfortunately, Grondar had no expertise to add to the discussion of tactics. Still, it is an important consideration and he pays close attention, asking questions as needed. The thought of being on the front line with Validar and Corley is a little surprising, but not objectionable.

Grondar's description:
Grondar jangles and clinks as the links of his shiny suit of chainmail shift and move with his squat, stout body. Heavy, mailed gloves, or gauntlets, cover his hands. A finely-crafted mace hangs from his belt, swinging back and forth in time with his rolling gait. Attached to his backpack are a stout crossbow and a quiver of bolts. Even among dwarves, Grondar would likely not be considered particularly attractive. His features are as rough and ill-used as his boots, which show every sign of some hard living and harder fighting. Still, he bears himself well and shows the confidence that can only come with experience. To those who have encountered dwarves previously, he seems a little larger than average and is well-muscled. His skin is a deep reddish-tan, with brown hair and matching eyes.

Chareos
Validar pauses for a moment as he considers his next words. "Friend Chareos, you are quite observant. My motivation to see this mission completed quickly and satisfactorily is indeed much stronger than anyone else here. And I promise you, at some point in the not so distant future, Lothar will perish, preferably by my own sword. The noble of which you speak was none other than one of my own immediate family and a member of the ruling house of Pyris."
Chareos listens intently on what Validar has to say. He can't help but to feel for this man. A member of his own family has been attacked, If it were him he would probably seek the same sort of justice.
"I am truly sorry for your family member. I hope that they are well. You need not worry for we shall apprehend this Lothar. The only thing that I may request of you, is that you keep your head about you. Once we extract what we desire to know he will be of no need to us. If his actions deem punishment then I would suggest letting him suffer in that of a jail cell with little to sustain him or a more swift punishment," placing his hand on his shoulder, "At least think on this Milord."

Bits and pieces
VALIDAR -
LAUCIAN - When Validar comes to me concerning the use of magic on his person, Laucian is a little puzzled by this, but respectful of his wishes. "If you don't wish to be healed by magical means that is your choice and I shall honor your request. Though I am also trained in healing, if you would prefer that method."
"Thank you for honoring my request, even if you may not understand it. I do not care for the direct casting of spells upon my person. However, your offer of natural healing will not go unaccepted or unappreciated by me. I thank you kindly in advance should your skills prove necessary."
"Tomorrow we will travelling deeper into Elcadan territory and there is more opportunity to encounter bandit patrols and other assorted nasties. It is comforting to know that we have both a ranger and a follower of the Lady of the Forests at our point."

GRONDAR - It is at this time - now that he is no longer astride that hideous beast - that Grondar finally gets the opportunity to introduce himself to their two new companions: the lords Validar and Corley. "Greetings, my lords. I am Grondar Foehammer, priest of the Mother of Safety, Berronar Truesilver. May her protective hand guard and guide you in these endeavors."
"Well met, Grondar Foehammer. I am pleased to have another healer amoungst our group, as well as your strong arm. I am certain we shall meet with glory, honor and battle."
"It is indeed my wish, my dwarven friend. Thank you for respecting my thinking. We must all do as we feel as right, regardless of the repercussions. To do otherwise would be to deny ourselves. As for you offer of natural healing, I would be most thankful for your skill should it prove necessary. You will find that I am most difficult to kill however, so hopefully we will not have to learn whose belief is the stronger and whose will have to be set aside," Validar says this all with a bit of a smile on his face. He has no desire to alienate the clerics of the group. In fact he is quite pleased for their presence. They will be most valuable in the adventures to come. Not having a single cleric on the Seekers last escapade proved their downfall.
"On the other hand, I have some few spells useful in combat situations which affect everyone around me. It would not be acceptable to deny everyone else Berronar's blessing, just because you happen to be nearby."
"That is an interesting quandry you have presented, Foehammer. However, I hope that you can agree that my own beliefs should be no less important than your own. Spells that affect my person directly are much less desirable than something that affects us all, but I will promise you to try and remove myself from your presence if you will promise to try to give me the moment to do so. I am not asking you to change your beliefs, only to respect mine as well."

"Thank you for your concern, friend Chareos. My father is regaining his strength and everything is back to normal at the castle. However, this was no direct assault on the Baron, not even an assassin's dagger in the night. This base afront took the form of a vile potion which attempted to not even to kill him, but to physically alter him into who knows what?"
"Had Lothar attempted to simply murder the Baron, then perhaps seeing him rot in chains would be somehow acceptable. But this, this requires but one recourse and one payment: Lothar's very life. I will not rest until that revenge is enacted, both on him and whomever this thug is working for. That I do swear."
"But do not concern yourself," Validar says as his expression softens a slight bit, "I shall keep my wits about me at all times. There are those who have accused me of being rash and acting without thinking, but I can assure you that they have confused rashness with decisiveness and overconfidence with self-confidence." A bit of anger flashes in his eyes for a brief moment, but quickly subsides. "I have always proved them wrong. I shall do nothing which jeopardizes this mission, simply to exact my revenge. It is more important that the revenge is satiated completely, rather than quickly. This full matter will not be completed in a few days or even weeks I should think. I can afford to be patient."

Conquer or Die!
Ivy
Ivy:
During Lord Validar's discussion of combat options, Ivy will add, "A sound plan, but I do not have any ranged weapons at my disposal. I save my mace for undead and do battle against mundane foes with my staff. I am trained in the use of weapons. My oath of faith to Lady Azrella does make engaging in combat difficult at times, but I manage."
Ivy is relieved to have Kylie doing most of the cooking. Kitchen skills are not her forte! Ivy will happily converse with Kylie as they work.
While Ivy is a bit surprised by this, she doesn't appear to be startled. Her expression turns to one of amusement rather than embarrassment. "You are most welcome, good sir. I too hope that my healing gifts will not be needed, but alas they are here should they be needed.""The honor is mine, milady." Corley will then gallantly kiss the back of the fair maiden's hand. "While I sincerely hope that we will need little of your healing arts on this mission, I am most pleased by your presence."
"I find that to be comforting, Lord Validar. My own particular abilities go beyond even the typical Azrellian priestess. I've also received extensive training to be a Holy Warrior of Azrella known as an Undead Hunter. This combat training has given me certain immunities against my hated foes. For instance, I have little to fear from the paralyzing touch of some undead. I am told that I can resist having my life's energy drained away, while I trust Lady Azrella with all my heart and soul, I am not eager to test that particular gift out.""I will certainly keep that fact in mind in the future, fair Ivy. Clerics are well known to be effective against the unliving and I was aware that Azrella's followers were even stronger in those powers, but I was not aware of your immunities. We will be sure to allow you first engagement, but be certain that as long as we ride together, I will not be far behind you."
"As you wish, Lord Validar. So shall it be." While not comprehending the armored man's reason, Ivy will not question them.Validar regards Ivy's amazed look.

For the glory of the Blue Lady!
Sherwood
Sherwood:
Sherwood listens as Validar presents his combat ideas. “That’s fine. We’ll go with that.”
“Jallarzi has taught you enough about magic for you to go out into the world on your own. We are curious about what you intend do with your talents. What are your future plans?”
“I understand your reasoning, Validar. However it has been my experience that the title just makes my task all the more difficult. While the nobility is generally liked in Pyris, such is not true in all domains in the kingdom. I tend to deal mostly with the common people, as you might put it. Using a title just puts another unnecessary barrier between me and them.”Although he doesn't much show it, Validar is probably as surprised by Sherwood's statement now, as Ivy was of his own earlier.
Sherwood listens as Validar presents his combat ideas. “That’s fine. We’ll go with that.”
“Sorry, forgot about that. I am told that Lothar stands about 5’7” with a heavy build. He’s got black hair, dark eyes, and a dark complexion. Typically is seen in studded leather armor.”When Validar begins explaining his tactics, Laucian will stop for a few moments and see what he proposes. " I have no problem with what Validar proposes. Though I do have on question that was overlooked at the inn." Looking between Sherwood and Validar, "This Lothar that we are to apprehend, do you have a description of him so we don't unknowingly dispatch him in combat?"
“Those spells should be suitable for what I suspect we will be dealing with. Should our opponents be of sterner stuff, I will break out some of the more high-powered spells. If it comes to that, you’ll not want to be around the enemy or be very close to me.”"My experience in dealing with these types of opponents would indicate that the area effect spells would be most effective: Web, Sleep, Flaming Sphere. Magic Missile is always useful in combat. Mirror Image and Shield could be effective defenses for yourself should we find ourselves in battle with large numbers," Validar offers to Chareos. "I must admit that I am not familiar with every bit of magic that you mention, but I have been trained in the use of battle magic on the field."
“Yes, it is frowned upon everywhere, but Pyris is particularly vigilant in such matters. I would also suggest not mentioning such things to Validar. I doubt he would look kindly on your finding. Personally, I don’t mind as much depending on who you target. Some people deserve to be robbed.”Sherwood comes and rides beside her for a little while as they travel. His question brings a smirk to her face. "Last I heard, Uncle Sherwood, it's frowned upon pretty much everywhere. But no, I didn't find the time or opportunity to explore the opportunities Pyris had to offer."
“Jallarzi has taught you enough about magic for you to go out into the world on your own. We are curious about what you intend do with your talents. What are your future plans?”

"I imagine not, Ivy of Azrella. We will be fortunate indeed if we do no have to fight such powerful undead creatures. At the same time, it can be exhilarating to defeat such evil monstrosities and know that you made a direct difference by your own hand. I trust you will be a formidable Undead Hunter in your own right, fair Ivy."
"I have my own method of healing, fair Ivy, if that puts your mind at rest a bit more. The only time anyone cast healing spells upon my person was after we slayed the Green Dragon, Woodstalker. "I understand your concern, fair Ivy. But under my proposed scenario, you would fill a more defensive role. Able to defend the others in the group, should there be a direct attack and able to use your spells as necessary. I wouldn't propose that to always be the case, but in this instance it should work well. And it would seem to fit your role as an Azrellian, I should think."

For instance, I have little to fear from the paralyzing touch of some undead. I am told that I can resist having my life's energy drained away, while I trust Lady Azrella with all my heart and soul, I am not eager to test that particular gift out."
And it was not immediately at my behest. Death holds no fear for one who has already fallen in battle and been buried."
"As you wish, Lord Validar. So shall it be." While not comprehending the armored man's reason, Ivy will not question them.
"I thank you for respecting my beliefs and desires."
----------------
Sherwood - “I understand your reasoning, Validar. However it has been my experience that the title just makes my task all the more difficult. While the nobility is generally liked in Pyris, such is not true in all domains in the kingdom. I tend to deal mostly with the common people, as you might put it. Using a title just puts another unnecessary barrier between me and them.”
"Understood, Sherwood. At least outside of court, I shall refrain from using your title, as you request."
Conquer or Die!
More Sherwood
Sherwood:
Once the battle plans are over with, Sherwood will gather Lilia, Kylie, Ivy, and Chareos together for a small talk.
"You four do not wear armor in battle. Because of that, I have a defensive spell that I can cast upon each of you for your protection. With your permission, of course. The spell is Stoneskin and what it does is make you immune to a certain amount of physical attacks upon your person. Swords will not cut your skin; arrows not pierce your flesh during the spells operation. You will still be affected by magical attacks, however. The spell will last until you've taken at least half a dozen hits, if not more."
"If you are in agreement, I will cast it upon one of you right now and do the other three in the morning. What say you?"
Before turning in, Sherwood will ask to speak to Validar in private. He overheard Validar's mini-rant about how he plans to deal with Lothar and feels the need to point out a few things to the nobleman.
"Validar, I can appreciate your desire to avenge what was done to your father. However, I feel the situation is not as cut and dry as you're making it sound. Frankly, this whole affair smells like a streel trout sitting in the sun for a week."
"The attempt on your father was incredibly clumsy. The fact that we have ANY clues to go from tells me this. As a mage, I can think of at least half a dozen ways to have harmed your father and not leave any trace to my involvement. And yet we are supposed to believe that Lothar not only orchestrated this whole affair, but also delivered the poisoned wine personally? You have a fine grasp of tactics, does this seem logical to you?"
"Two possibilities spring to mind. One is that Lothar was unaware of what the wine was intended to do. Or, and this seems most likely, someone impersonated Lothar giving us a false clue. Perhaps someone has a grudge against both your father and Lothar and is using this method to eliminate both men. This expedition to Twin Falls could simply be a fool's errand."
"My investigation has proven that Lothar is a criminal and heavily involved in banditry, so his removal is desirable. However, he may not be guilty of the crime you prescribe to him. He may be a scapegoat for the true criminal."
"How did the true culprit behind this know that your father would actually be the first to drink the tainted wine? Why not your mother or someone else at the castle? There's far too much chance involved with using the wine as the agent for the poison. In fact, it might have only been a multi-part poison with the other portion delivered in some other manner, perhaps in food. That would at least explain why only your father was affected."
"Another factor is why your father? Was it a personal grudge of some manner? He is part of the nobility, but not near the top of those in the kingdom. Besides, what is there to gain with the removal of your father? You would become the new Baron. What does the villain in this affair gain by that?"
"These are the questions I need Lothar alive to answer, if he even can. Surely you are more interested in dealing with those behind this incident than the foot soldiers just blindly following orders."

Ivy
Ivy:
"I was found concealed in a cabinet by an adventuring band who was passing through the village. There was a small piece of ivy in the basket and that became my name. They left me with the Priestess of Azrella in Elcadan and that is where I grew up."
In a lower voice, Ivy will add, "I must confess that I do have a taste for battle, for better or worse. Perhaps taking out my own life frustrations in the process. Indeed, I've been compared to a dwarven berserker in battle against undead. I do appreciate you watching my back in such conflicts, but do not stray too close. I would not have a friend be injured by my hand."
Later when Sherwood offers his protection spell. "I would gladly accept your spell, Sherwood. May the Blue Lady bless you."
Ivy is content to wait until morning to receive her Stoneskin.
"I know very well the exhilaration of defeating foes in battle, Lord Validar. Perhaps a bit too much for the tastes of my trainers." Sensing that a further explanation will be required and since Lord Validar seems trustworthy, Ivy will relate the tale of how she was raised in the orphanage after her village was wiped out by undead."I imagine not, Ivy of Azrella. We will be fortunate indeed if we do no have to fight such powerful undead creatures. At the same time, it can be exhilarating to defeat such evil monstrosities and know that you made a direct difference by your own hand. I trust you will be a formidable Undead Hunter in your own right, fair Ivy."

Lilia gets a life lesson
Lilia:
Back at the city gate:
Lilia will remain on her mount when the human feels the desire to kiss the backs of everyone's hand. What odd behavior! When he approaches Lilia, she will speak out in common, "Words of greeting will suffice, Lord Corley."
Riding along:
Later during the ride, Lilia finds Sherwood Elf-Friend riding beside her.
"How are you doing, Lilia?", he inquires speaking fluent Elvish. His skill at her native tongue surprises Lilia.
"Why am I here, Sherwood Elf-Friend? I do not belong here. Dealing with human bandits seems like such a menial task."
"That is precisely why the Clan Elder though you needed to be on this mission."
That comment takes Lilia back a bit. "What do you mean?"
"You have great potential as a sorceress, Lilia. Your grasp of magic is impressive for one so young."
"Thank you for the complement. I am 120 years old, Sherwood Elf-friend. I am not young."
"By human standards, no. But by Elven ones you have the same level of maturity as Kylie."
"That could be construed as an insult."
"If I am anything, Lilia, I am blunt. The Clan Elders feel that you need to get out of the elven forest and out into the real world. Perhaps it will shatter a few of your preconceived notions about things. You have great talent, but you are immature and unnecessarily arrogant."
Lilia is genuinely shocked to hear such things being spoken about her! "I am not! Elves are better than everyone else. Everyone knows that!"
"Thank you for just proving my point, Lilia. Elves are fine beings, but they are not clearly superior to every other race. They are just as error prone as everyone else. There are plenty of skeletons in the elven closet as there are with all races. Take the drow for instance."
Not having a response to that point, Lilia will just look away from Sherwood, noticeably dropping the Elf-Friend part of his name.
"We are still better when it comes to sorcery. You humans seem unable to control it properly."
Sherwood simply laughs at that comment. "How many famous Elven sorcerers can you name?"
Lilia looks back at Sherwood in shock. Her mind goes blank for a few moments as she tries to come up with the names of famous Elven magic users. To her horror, she can only recall a handful of names. "Thiondar Nightstar, Lareoth Runemaster, Tynessull Silverspear, Mylsibis Korianthal, and Avissar Durothil."
"Leomund, Mordenkainen, Bigby, Nystul, Drawmij, Otto, Otiluke, Rary, Tenser, Maximillian. Even some notorious mages such as Halaster, Keln, Alphaks, Zag, and Zhenghi. I can name dozens more. Humans have contributed far more to magic then the elves ever have."
Anger begins to play across Lilia's face, but she cannot think of anything to say. The insufferable human is correct! Humans seem to have added more to mage craft than the elves have. How can this be?
"At least we elven mages retain our sanity while you humans frequently go mad from possessing so much power," Lilia arrogantly counters.
"Again, your perceptions are faulty. I actually met Thiondar Nightstar. He was quite ancient and definitely mad. At least I was able to save much of his considerable library from destruction. A shard of his spirit resides in my longsword Lifeshield. That was quite the adventure. I'll have to share it with you one of these days."
There is enough truth in the humans' statement to make Lilia believe it. It is known among the elves that Sherwood did rescue a treasure trove of elven books and ancient texts. Could they have belonged to Thiondar Nightstar? Lilia is curious to know more of this tale, but too angry and ashamed to come out and ask right now.
"You have shamed me, Sherwood. I will then become the greatest elven mage on record to balance the scales back once more."
"At least you have a career goal", Sherwood adds with a chuckle. "I will only say one more thing to you, Lilia. Judge others not by their race or their gender, but what is in their heart. You may be surprised at what you find."
With that parting shot, Sherwood rides off leaving Lilia alone with her troubled thoughts.
Battle plans:
Lilia will observe Lord Validar make his grandiose plans from a distance. He does seem to have a fair grasp of tactics for a human. When asked her opinion, Lilia will respond with, "I am satisfied with this arrangement."
Later still when Sherwood offers this protection spell, Lilia will softly say in Elvish, "Thank you for offering, Sherwood. I will accept your protection magic." He just grins back at Lilia in response.

Lilia will remain on her mount when the human feels the desire to kiss the backs of everyone's hand. What odd behavior! When he approaches Lilia, she will speak out in common, "Words of greeting will suffice, Lord Corley."
Riding along:
Lilia is a bit startled by Laucian's claim! This forest anything like that of our home? I think not! The trees are far too short in size, unlike the great giant oaks of home. Trees so huge that numerous dwellings can be carved into them! Trees so vast that they form a canopy that blocks out much of the sky! The forests themselves are enchanted to never be this cold."I share your sentiments. It is good to feel the wind in my hair and the familiar sound of the wrestling of trees. The chill in the air is a minor hindrance, for it could be far worse. In some ways it feels like I am in our forest once again, for everything about this land seems similar to it."
Later during the ride, Lilia finds Sherwood Elf-Friend riding beside her.

Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!
Lord Corley makes the rounds
Corley:
Kissing of Hands:
Planting:
Battle tactics:
Corley will slap Validar on the back after he unveils is plans of battle! "A fine stratagem, my friend! My father would be most proud!"
Tending to the mounts:
"To tell the truth, Lady Kylie, I feel as if I was born in the saddle. I was taught to ride at a very young age, starting with a fine pony much like yours. I graduated to larger steeds as I grew older until gaining Charger here, my warhorse. I have extensive cavalry training and am skilled with the lance. Horses are magnificent and powerful mounts. Take care of them and they will take care of you. A special bond can form between a horse and his rider. We are boon comrades in a fashion. A team on the field of battle united in an effort to defeat the enemy."
Lord Corley will closely observe Lady Kylie, but not try to be obvious in his stares. He notes a slight trace of elvishness in her features, suggesting that perhaps she is a half-elf. However he makes no comment about it as it would be rude to simply ask ones race if one is in doubt.
"Hail Grondar Foehammer! May glory and honor be ours!""Greetings, my lords. I am Grondar Foehammer, priest of the Mother of Safety, Berronar Truesilver. May her protective hand guard and guide you in these endeavors."
Kissing of Hands:
"A pleasure, Lady Sherra. I was raised to be courteous to all ladies. Part of my cavalier training."Sherra will permit Corley his gallant introduction. She smiles at his delight in meeting the women of the adventuring band. Sherra cannot recall anyone in her past ever conducting themselves like Corley has thus far.
"An honor, Lady Kylie. May glory and honor be ours in this endeavor." Lord Corley seems oblivious of Kylie's discomfort with his greeting."Kylie Lanthorn of Elcadan," she'll say by way of introduction.
"Indeed, Lady Ivy, indeed." What a fine lass this Ivy of Azrella! Most comely and kind in demeanor. While Ivy is a bit surprised by this, she doesn't appear to be startled. Her expression turns to one of amusement rather than embarrassment. "You are most welcome, good sir. I too hope that my healing gifts will not be needed, but alas they are here should they be needed."
“As you wish, Lady Lilia. So shall it be.” Undaunted, Corley moves off leaving the elf maiden her privacy. Thoughts of how flighty elves can be does cross his mind for a moment, but the incident is quickly forgotten.Lilia will remain on her mount when the human feels the desire to kiss the backs of everyone's hand. What odd behavior! When he approaches Lilia, she will speak out in common, "Words of greeting will suffice, Lord Corley."
Planting:
"Really? How interesting! I must confess that I know little of the Lady of the Forests beyond the obvious. I was unaware that you also are seed planters. Fascinating!"Laucian will look up at Corley, "You shall receive no forgiveness, for you have done nothing wrong my friend," he says with a smile. "I have just planted the seeds of a Yew tree. Followers of the Lady of the forest choose a species of plant to protect and to see them endure as a whole, among other duties."
Battle tactics:
Corley will slap Validar on the back after he unveils is plans of battle! "A fine stratagem, my friend! My father would be most proud!"
Tending to the mounts:
"Ah, you are a student of the Lady Sallavarian, Lady Kylie? I've had the pleasure of meeting her before. A fine woman and sorceress. "The one called Lord Corley approaches her in the stables that evening.

On the Road Again
Grondar:
As Validar speaks, Grondar scratches his neatly-trimmed beard speculatively. "Hmm... You say that you are most difficult to kill. Does that extend to regrowing lost limbs and immunity to poisons and such?
"While your beliefs are indeed important, I would not agree that they override the beliefs and wellbeing of all of our companions. That said, I am willing to give you notice before I cast such a spell, though it is most likely to be in the heat of battle, which could make casually wandering away a little difficult. One thing that might ease the issue would be moving me to a different tactical group, such as a role similar to Ivy's."
As the discussions wind down, Grondar proves to be one of the first to retire, thanking Kylie and Ivy for the fine repast. As always, he conducts his evening devotion - in a quiet spot if possible. After a good night's sleep, he rises to resume his prayers and religious observances. A tasty breakfast, and he is as ready to ride as he is likely to be any time soon.
Returning to the stables, he eyes the pony dubiously and rubs his rump absently. As he looks at the beast, he realizes that it has been cared for in some manner in his absense. It seems there are yet things about this form of transport that he needs to learn. Loading his pack and other equipment aboard the pony, he leads the beast outside. Grondar will ride the horse in circles until the others are ready to go, hoping to improve his ability to direct the pony in a desired direction.

On the Road Again
Kylie:
Talking with Sherwood as they ride, the mage asks a question which she has given little thought to. "Haven't really thought about it. Just living day to day is about the best I've been able to manage.
"I'm not likely to give up my profession, if that's what you're asking. It's what I do, and I'm fairly good at it. Not to say that I'm just going to take anything I can lay my hands on. I do prefer to target those who can best afford it; I don't wish to bring further misery to those who can barely survive as is.
"I know that sometimes people with these type of skills are hired to locate and retrieve other peoples' lost or stolen items. Done it once or twice in the past, in fact. I might be able to augment my income that way, or even make a career of it. I really don't know at this point." Kylie shrugs, not knowing what else to say.
Corley's comments in the stables intrigue Kylie. "So you've met her? At first, we didn't get along so well, but we eventually worked out our differences.
"Well, you're certainly far more of an expert than I, then. Are these mounts Sherwood provided good ones, in your estimation?
"I don't know that I will ever be a sufficient rider to consider a horse a 'boon companion' or team member."
Since Ivy seems inclined to let Kylie lead in the kitchen, Kylie will do so. As she works, she chats with the priestess, mostly discussing her early life and what happened with her parents. The tale is a sad one, but may be cathartic for Kylie to talk about.
After dinner, Sherwood offers her and some of the others some magical protection. The offer brings a chuckle to her lips. "Hey, anything that will help keep me alive is okay in my book." Whether immediately or in the morning doesn't matter to her.

VALIDAR -

Indeed, I've been compared to a dwarven berserker in battle against undead. I do appreciate you watching my back in such conflicts, but do not stray too close. I would not have a friend be injured by my hand."
Validar looks at the young woman in a new light. Dwarven berserker indeed. Hardly sounds like a pacifist follower of Azrella. "I will be careful, Ivy of Azrella. You can be as certain of that as my pledge to support you in battle."
---------------------------
Lilia will observe Lord Validar make his grandiose plans from a distance. He does seem to have a fair grasp of tactics for a human. When asked her opinion, Lilia will respond, "I am satisfied with this arrangement."
"I am pleased that this plan meets with everyone's approval." Was there a hint of sarcasm in Validar's voice?
---------------------------
Before turning in, Sherwood will ask to speak to Validar in private.
"What do you mean, Sherwood? All of the information that I have was provided by yourself and Jallarzi," Validar says, somewhat confused by this new information.
"There is no reason to believe that a mage has to be involved, simply because they would be effective. Many assassins do their work directly. It is not necessarily true, but certainly a valid possibility. Do you have another previously unspoken theory?"
"I wish that you would have offered this information earlier. I do not like chasing around after straws. However, it seems like there is no sure theory and we need to apprehend this Lothar. If he was in fact directly involved, then he shall die," Validar continues.
"My investigation has proven that Lothar is a criminal and heavily involved in banditry, so his removal is desirable. However, he may not be guilty of the crime you prescribe to him. He may be a scapegoat for the true criminal."
"As I said earlier to Chareos, whoever is responsible will be dealt with fully and permanently. This Lothar may just be a means to the task, but as you said, eliminating him will only serve the greater saftey of this area. Is there anything else which you suspect about this situation that you wish to share?"
"That thought has crossed my mind a few times as well. I have wondered if someone at the castle wasn't involved in this situation."
"Another factor is why your father? Was it a personal grudge of some manner? He is part of the nobility, but not near the top of those in the kingdom. Besides, what is there to gain with the removal of your father? You would become the new Baron. What does the villain in this affair gain by that?"
"Jallarzi said that the poison was trying to change him somehow. How does that factor into your theories? Change him into what? My family has many enemies in Elcadan. It is no secret that they would love to add Pyris to their holdings. I was away at war. If my father were removed, it should have taken some time for my return. There is also the possibility that some attack could have been brought upon my person in Gateway. All of this assumes that someone in Elcadan is to blame. A personal grudge could be behind this as well. We must find some answers to our questions."
"These are the questions I need Lothar alive to answer, if he even can. Surely you are more interested in dealing with those behind this incident than the foot soldiers just blindly following orders."
"But of course. As I said my desire for revenge can afford to be patient as long as we find the true culprit and villain in this plot. I am not a rash, blood-thirsty fool. I thought you would have learned that by now."

VALIDAR -
Corley will slap Validar on the back after he unveils his plans of battle! "A fine stratagem, my friend! My father would be most proud!"
"Thank you for your enthused approval, Lord Corley. I learned what I know from some of your father's teachings, as you well know, my good friend. And this has worked in practice in the past. The two and three-pronged attacks, focusing on combined arms, is very effective against most opponents."

As Validar speaks, Grondar scratches his neatly-trimmed beard speculatively. "Hmm... You say that you are most difficult to kill. Does that extend to regrowing lost limbs and immunity to poisons and such?
"I promise you that it is not mere bravado that fuels my words, my dwarven friend. The Seekers have slain giants, demons, land sharks, hordes of orcs and a green dragon among our exploits. The word is that my friends buried me once and despite none of them having the ability to regenerate life, I was back among them within days. As for regrowing lost limbs, I haven't had the experience fortunately, but I believe it to be true. I don't however claim immunity to poisons, but I have survived the vile noxious breath of an emerald wyrm. However, I prefer not to convince my friends with tall tales but with actions," Validar says ending that train of thought, as he realizes that he is approaching bragging.
"While your beliefs are indeed important, I would not agree that they override the beliefs and well being of all of our companions. That said, I am willing to give you notice before I cast such a spell, though it is most likely to be in the heat of battle, which could make casually wandering away a little difficult. One thing that might ease the issue would be moving me to a different tactical group, such as a role similar to Ivy's."
"I am not asking you to override other's beliefs, just as I am not asking you to override my own. Perhaps if Chareos were willing, the two of you could exchange tactical groups. That would reduce our ranged combat abilities slightly however. What say you, friend Chareos?"

As Validar asks what spells the mages and clerics have at their disposal, Laucian will reply "At the moment I have three spells ready: Entangle,Bless and Sun scorch."
"Thank you for honoring my request, even if you may not understand it. I do not care for the direct casting of spells upon my person. However, your offer of natural healing will not go unaccepted or unappreciated by me. I thank you kindly in advance should your skills prove necessary."
"Tomorrow we will traveling deeper into Elcadan territory and there is more opportunity to encounter bandit patrols and other assorted nasties. It is comforting to know that we have both a ranger and a follower of the Lady of the Forests at our point."
"My people have trained me well, and with Ehlonna's guidance and blessing, I hope to keep those encounters of which you speak to a minimum. I will do my best to lead us through this area unscathed."
Laucian will seek out Sherwood, "I meant to thank you back at the inn for considering my request. When the time comes I will repay you."

Grondar:
The dwarf turns to Chareos. "It's not that I don't want to be among the front-line fighters. Rather it's a case of Validar not wanting to be affected by any spells I might cast. Unfortunately, that is difficult to promise when our tactical assignments put us so close together."

"Very well, since this seems to be the best way to resolve any issues, we can easily switch Chareos and Grondar in their roles. There is no reason to believe that we will not see further changes in the future. This plan I suggested is primarily for dealing with a particular type of threat, but it can also prove useful in general."
"I trust everyone will have a pleasant and well rested night. I expect a little more excitement before we reach Twin Forks."

Grondar:
As the question of tactics is resolved, Grondar nods. "Very well. My new responsibility will consist of providing ranged fire with my crossbow, in concert with Kylie and Sherra. Additionally, I'll work with Ivy to defend the two archers from attacks on their position, both with spells and my mace as needed. I'm sure the Revered Mother would approve of such a plan."

Corley
Corley:
“I’ve met the Lady Sallavarian at court, which I would imagine is far different than her role with you as mentor and teacher. She seems most charming and her reputation as a sorceress is beyond reproach.”Corley's comments in the stables intrigue Kylie. "So you've met her? At first, we didn't get along so well, but we eventually worked out our differences.
“The horses provided by Sherwood are sufficient for the needs of their riders. They are what is called riding horses and not warhorses like my Charger or Lord Validar’s Havok. They are smaller in stature and less muscular carrying lighter weight, but can run faster. A mount well suited to an unarmored adventurer.”"Well, you're certainly far more of an expert than I, then. Are these mounts Sherwood provided good ones, in your estimation?
Lord Corley will simply nod in agreement. Alas, much to his father’s disappointment, the art of tactical warfare was lacking in his younger son. He never could have conceived of such a plan, let alone explain to others their role in it. Secretly Corley hopes he carry out his role without mishap."Thank you for your enthused approval, Lord Corley. I learned what I know from some of your father's teachings, as you well know, my good friend. And this has worked in practice in the past. The two and three-pronged attacks, focusing on combined arms, is very effective against most opponents."

Ivy:
Ivy:
“You are most welcome, Grondar. But the credit must go to Kylie. She is the one skilled with food preparation. I only assisted as she directed.”As the discussions wind down, Grondar proves to be one of the first to retire, thanking Kylie and Ivy for the fine repast.
Ivy is a very good listener and she quietly listens to Kylie’s heartbreaking tale. “Aye, there are many such tales of heartbreak in the slums of Elcadan. You must miss your mother terribly. I do not wish to make light of your situation, but I do envy you to some extent. At least when you close your eyes and think upon your parents they appear before you. I do not have that luxury. But enough talk of such sad things. What shall we work upon next?”Since Ivy seems inclined to let Kylie lead in the kitchen, Kylie will do so. As she works, she chats with the priestess, mostly discussing her early life and what happened with her parents. The tale is a sad one, but may be cathartic for Kylie to talk about.

Sherwood
Sherwood:
Since no one seems to mind when they get the Stoneskin spell, Sherwood would cast it on Chareos, saving the women until morning.
Before turning in himself, Sherwood will complement Kylie on her meal. “Thank you for such a fine meal.”
“I am not surprised. The young tend to not look too far into the future and there are times where living day to day is the best one can do. I wouldn’t ask you to go against your nature and as long as you don’t, as you put it, bring further misery, so much the better. At any rate, keep your options open. I wouldn’t want to see anything bad happen to you.”Talking with Sherwood as they ride, the mage asks a question which she has given little thought to.
“What I told you was the facts as Jallarzi and I have been able to ascertain. What I just spoke of is just theory and conjecture. I simply want Lothar taken alive so that he may be questioned.”"What do you mean, Sherwood? All of the information that I have was provided by yourself and Jallarzi," Validar says, somewhat confused by this new information.
“All of what you say is also possible.”"There is no reason to believe that a mage has to be involved, simply because they would be effective. Many assassins do their work directly. It is not necessarily true, but certainly a valid possibility. Do you have another previously unspoken theory?"
“Unfortunately, Lothar is the only solid clue we have to track. So regardless if this all comes to nothing, tracking down Lothar is our only logical course of action.”"I wish that you would have offered this information earlier. I do not like chasing around after straws. However, it seems like there is no sure theory and we need to apprehend this Lothar. If he was in fact directly involved, then he shall die," Validar continues.
“That is a possibility we have considered. Jallarzi will continue to impersonate your father in hopes of ferreting the culprit out. Our departure to track Lothar now becomes important as it may cause the traitor in Castle Pyris to act once more.”"That thought has crossed my mind a few times as well. I have wondered if someone at the castle wasn't involved in this situation."
“We suspect that it was trying to change him somehow, what exactly it was trying to do remains unclear.”"Jallarzi said that the poison was trying to change him somehow. How does that factor into your theories? Change him into what?"
“Based on what? I just met you yesterday afternoon so you are a stranger to me just as I am a stranger to you. I have heard rumors and stories, but I do not know you personally. Far too often those who proclaim to be seeking glory and honor do so regardless of the consequences of their actions. My sole goal is to discover who attacked your father and why. I care not how it is accomplished, only that it is accomplished. Let the glory and honor go to those who cannot live without it.”"But of course. As I said my desire for revenge can afford to be patient as long as we find the true culprit and villain in this plot. I am not a rash, bloodthirsty fool. I thought you would have learned that by now."
Since no one seems to mind when they get the Stoneskin spell, Sherwood would cast it on Chareos, saving the women until morning.
“Think nothing of it, Laucian. Your participation in this quest is payment enough for me.”Laucian will seek out Sherwood; "I meant to thank you back at the inn for considering my request. When the time comes I will repay you."

"Even better, my dwarven friend," Validar will add. "I was not aware that you were skilled in the use of a crossbow. That makes you able to easily switch between front line fighter duties as well as ranged and defending tasks. So this situation works out the best for everyone involved."

Sherwood - “What I told you was the facts as Jallarzi and I have been able to ascertain. What I just spoke of is just theory and conjecture. I simply want Lothar taken alive so that he may be questioned.”

...

Validar stands quiet for a few long moments as Sherwood speaks his mind. He studies the man for a few moments before speaking. "It appears I made numerous assumptions that are proving themselves quite incorrect. Forgive my error. I shall not make that mistake again." Validar doesn't elaborate any further as to his true meaning, but his tone was not as apologetic as the words would otherwise indicate.
