New Kingdoms #3

Post by GM Fenrir »

For most of you this has been a long day of traveling and new experiences. Visiting the village of Dormare in the most northeastern part of the Kingdom of Maletar during spring festival is an exciting time. The seemingly endless market, the tournaments, songs, performances and the grand Inn of the Smiling Dryad, all nestled on the edge of the Deep Wood. It should be a great time for all to have. Unfortunately it seems that potential tragedy cares not for what “should be” and all of you find yourselves banded together in common interest to investigate the mysterious non-arrival of a prominent farming family: the Makkees.

From what you have gathered from different sources; the constable, the innkeeper, other farming families and, for some, previous experience, is that the Makkees are the second largest cattle farmers in the entire northeastern region. Their farm lies a full day’s march off the west road where farm land meets the forest. They have a family of three boys and a girl ranging in age from about 14 to 3 being the youngest boy. Both mother and father of these children, as well as the mother’s lame brother, also reside there and work the farm. It is understood that they have nearly six score cattle, a few other assorted livestock, including chickens and game hens, and some small crop farming spread over nearly six acres of land. Three barns, a storage shed, a stable, the main house and two smaller houses all reside on this land. You figure if you leave before dawn and ride straight through, you should reach the farm by midday.

Awakened on your own or by the inn’s staff, everyone makes their way downstairs. The noise of the customers last night could be heard even on the third floor of the inn but did little to keep anyone awake. This morning it is much more somber. The main dining hall is lit by a handful of candles in colored glass cages, giving a warm, but not extremely penetrating, glow to the lowest level. Two serving wenches are still cleaning tables from the previous night’s crowd but they themselves are refreshed and lively. Neither was seen the previous night, so they must be for the morning rush. The innkeeper though is present and one wonders if he slept at all. His jovial mood this morning almost insists that he found some sleep at some point.

“A glorious morning to you!” he will say as each of you make your way down. “I have prepared a meal for all of you that hopefully is to your liking.” With a wave of his hand, he personally leads you to a semi-private dining area as he is seemingly free from having to tend bar at this hour.

The meal laid out before you is lavish and includes fresh boiled eggs, strips of bacon, several types of breads, fresh fruits, potatoes cut and seasoned, porridge set in large serving bowls, two whole roasted hens and thinly sliced beef drenched in its own juices. Jars of jams and honeys and sticks of butter are strategically placed upon the table. Pitchers of water, fruit juice and mead also sit waiting to be consumed.

“Please, let me know if there is anything else you fine souls need and I shall have the kitchen staff on it directly,” he says as a serving wench offers you a seat. She is a young girl of maybe 12 years with long brown hair and slight freckling upon her cheeks. She is apparently not tasked to cleaning with the others and instead looks dedicated to this table.

“For the road I have a basket of fresh baked breads filled with honey and glazed on top,” the innkeeper adds. “Oh they are divine trust me. I have eaten far more than my share over the years!” he adds with great mirth.

The innkeeper will refuse all offers of coin, instead insisting, “Nonsense. With the wealth you freely passed last night you are due this and more. It is the least I can provide to ensure you have a good start on whatever today may bring. May the gods be merciful to the Makkees.”

The innkeeper will then leave you to your eating, discussions and planning and go about preparing for the first day of the festival. Even now others are coming down from their rooms and seeking their own food or drink to start the day. The serving wench will remain at the edges of the dining area, eager to help in whatever you need but disciplined enough to remain out of immediate earshot.

GM Note: Some things to consider discussing is riding order, whether to take a break or ride straight through, scout the farm upon arrival or ride straight in, and so forth.

Erizhetiana of Lotan -

Erizhetiana will make her appearance down at the breakfast table a little later than most. Currently she is dressed in a long-sleeved silk garment of dark blue which wrapped about her torso. It was richly adorned in silver embroidery. Lighter blue pantaloons extended to just past her knees and were gathered there with a white ribbon. The same embroidery as on her top was along the side of her pants from the waist down. The same white fringed shawl that she had yesterday was worn over her shoulders, but left open, offering some extra warmth from the morning chill.

She was made up well, although not as extravagantly as yesterday: blued lids, kohl-lined eyes, slightly rouged cheeks and pink tint upon her lips. Her dark curly hair was not contained by the hair combs as it had been the day before and was left to its own whims. She seemed to be wearing the same amount of jewelry as she did the day before, indicating she either slept in it or took the time to remove and replace it as part of her morning preparations.

“A glorious morning to you!” he will say as each of you make your way down. “I have prepared a meal for all of you that hopefully is to your liking.” With a wave of his hand, he personally leads you to a semi-private dining area as he is seemingly free from having to tend bar at this hour.

“And to you, Master Torvin,” she will respond, as she pads her way downstairs, amidst the chimes of her anklets. She stops him for a moment to ask a question before being led to the dining area. “I am curious about a matter of security,” she will say just above a whisper. “Are there means to secure valuables while we are away?”

She will greet those who are there, when she arrives. “I still must complete my preparations, however, and do not wish to hold up the group any longer than necessary,” she explains. She starts taking some of the various foods provided and then just decides to take a sampling of each along with a mug of the fruit juices. “So, while I risk rudeness at not partaking with the rest of you, I will return to my room to complete my readiness.” She smiles widely, clearly not unwilling to join the group. She then proceeds with her breakfast back to her room. She will eat of the sumptuous meal while she dons her armor, collects her weaponry and leaves the room ready for her return. All the while, she will continue her prayers to Ishtar that she had begun after wakening.

When she returns to the group again, she is decked out in an ornate suit of studded leather armor. It consists mostly of hardened leather pieces which have been form-fitted to her body. Clearly the armor was made to exacting proportions for her. The studs were smaller than might be seen on other armor and were done in contrasting colors of silver and brass to create a fine intricate pattern which carried over all parts of the armor. Looking closely one could see that the design was that of intertwined leaved vines and flowers. In addition, parts of the armor were dyed or tinted along the edgings to have a darker blue hue along the upper edges and a pinker hue along bottom edges.

A dark blue silk scarf wound around her armoured torso and over her shoulder, leaving only the breastplate and shoulder armor showing. The armor was worn over the clothing she had been seen in earlier and the color could be seen through the gaps in the armor, which covered her upper and lower arms at strategic points. A heavy belt was worn about her waist and short black gloves were tucked in at one side. On the other a heavy wicked-looking flanged mace was secured to her side. This was the first indication that this girl might have any martial skill at all.

A sort of leather plaited skirt, with decorative and protective studs hung from her waist. It was also in the dyed colors, but were alternating panels of the colors to create a pleasing pattern. More fitted leather plates were secured to her thighs with blackened leather straps and her shin pieces extended from high enough to protect her knees down to her ankles and connected to a sort of sandal that also had a protective plate over part of the top of her feet. The soles were thick and ribbed for good footing over uneven ground.

Some of her jewels could still be seen where they peeked out from the edges of armor or between leather plates. Her hair was as uncontained as it was before and gave her an unexpected wild look with her ornate armor. In one hand was some sort of combination helm/facemask and in the other was a long staff with a bright blue glass balls in either side, several crystal insets and flanged like her mace at the upper end. The helm when worn would protect the bridge of her nose and forehead, as well as the sides of her face with metal reinforced plates. The whole thing then strapped behind her head, with metallic disks hanging from the edges of the straps along the side of her head. This managed to also keep her hair out of her face when fighting, but it was of its ‘own mind’ on the top and back. (Imagine a sort of banshee mask which covered most of her face and left her hair free elsewhere.)

To finalize everything a dark fur hooded cloak was slung over one shoulder and held securely there, able to be easily wrapped about the whole body as needed. Her steed would be retrieved from the stables when the rest of the group was ready to depart.

She greets everyone again when she appears. While riding she will keep the staff in the saddle support and her headpiece is strapped just in front of her for easy access, when the time should come. “Well, then,” she will offer, “if everyone is here, we should start making time.”

Erizhetiana of Lotan -

Unless specifically assigned a riding order, Erizhi will ride toward the center of the group, allowing the fighters to cover the front and back of their small column. If the road and trails allow it, she will preferably ride alongside someone to help assuage the boredom of such a long ride, with conversation. But she will use some of the time to meditate further over certain issues that have been on her mind of late.

Stephanie:
Butternut wrote:"Nice to meetcha," Butternut says, extending her tiny hand for a shake. "That's not far from here, as I recall..."
“About a two days ride,” Stephanie replies shaking the small woman's hand. “I'm not from the village itself as it sits in the forest, but rather my family farm on the outskirts.”

Morning comes soon enough and Steph has no trouble waking. Glancing over, Stephanie is mildly surprised to see that Aesa slept in the nude, but does not make an issue of it. Instead she'll just not look that way while getting dressed. Since it is pretty warm already, Steph changes her mind about wearing her piece meal armor right now. Can always stop right before our destination and change into it. Instead the armor is packed away and she wears soft riding boots, brown trousers, and a green blouse. Her hair is pulled back into a pony tail to keep her eyes clear.

Her sword belt is locked on with her blade hanging in its sheath. The blade is silently slid out of his sheath and she eyes it for a few moments. In her mind she goes back to when she first wielded this blade while defending herself from an attacking wolf. That was years ago and now the sword was more than a friend, it was an extension of herself. The blade is replaced in its sheath once more. Gathering up her gear, Steph departs the room.

The appetizing aroma of food assaults her senses as she nears the ground floor. Much to her surprise, a huge feast has been laid out by the Innkeeper. Her mouth waters slightly and she notices her hunger for the first time.
Innkeeper wrote:“A glorious morning to you!” he will say as each of you make your way down. “I have prepared a meal for all of you that hopefully is to your liking.” With a wave of his hand, he personally leads you to a semi-private dining area as he is seemingly free from having to tend bar at this hour.
“A pleasant morning to you as well, Innkeeper,” Stephanie says. “It smells like home when my grandmother would cook for the whole family. I can't wait to dig in!”

Making her way to the private dining area, Stephanie sees the meal that had been laid out before them. Setting her gear down near where she plans to sit, Steph grabs a plate and beings to pile on the food. She takes a couple of eggs, some bacon, and bread, a helping of the potatoes, a leg from one of the hens and several slices of roast beef. Sitting down again, she begins to devour the meal with her usual gusto. Fruit juice is taken to wash it all down.
Innkeeper wrote:“Please, let me know if there is anything else you fine souls need and I shall have the kitchen staff on it directly,” he says as a serving wench offers you a seat. She is a young girl of maybe 12 years with long brown hair and slight freckling upon her cheeks. She is apparently not tasked to cleaning with the others and instead looks dedicated to this table.
Steph notices the small girl that seems to be waiting on them this morning. She smiles at the small girl as she reminds her so much of her cousin Alicia. She'll make a point to leave a few coins as a tip for the lass.

The priestess enters the dining area and once more seems inappropriately dressed for what lies ahead. It can't help but make the swordswoman wonder if she's ever done anything like this before. Battle tends to destroy such fine garments, unless her wealth is so great that replacing them isn't a consideration. She takes some food and then excuses herself once more. Stephanie just nods as her mother raised her to not talk with her mouth full of food.

She returns some time later, wearing extravagant leather armor that must have been custom made. Stephanie cant help but shake her head. While it certainly is an improvement, she wonders if there has ever been blood spilled on it before. Such stains don’t come clean easily and the armor itself doesn’t seem to have seen battle before.
Erizhetiana wrote:She greets everyone again when she appears. While riding she will keep the staff in the saddle support and her headpiece is strapped just in front of her for easy access, when the time should come. “Well, then,” she will offer, “if everyone is here, we should start making time.”
“Agreed,” Stephanie says. “I'll get my mount and be back in a few minutes.”

Picking up her gear once more, Stephanie makes her way to the stable she left Thunder in last night. Satisfied that he was well treated and fed, Steph packs he down with her gear and then vaults into the saddle and rides back to the others.

“Let us ride!”

Steph will probably be near the front of the group as they ride along.

Sir Rovach

Sir Rovach awakens the next morning refreshed after his night's sleep, yet puzzled by the dream he had. Who was represented in this dream, he wonders? Dreams fade with time, so should he let this one pass as all the others he's had? Maybe it would be worth getting Lady Erizhetiana's opinion on the matter, as a servant of a god of his pantheon.

After arising, Sir Rovach does his morning prayers to Anu and begins putting on his plate mail armor. He has his cloak hanging off his left shoulder. He replaces his weapons on his body; first he attached the dagger to his right thigh & the dagger to his belt on the left side. He finishes by placing his sword on his back.

Exiting his room, he procedes downstairs to a semi-private dining area where the rest of the party has gathered for breakfast. Taking just some bread & cheese, with a small mug of juice, Sir Rovach greets the companions. "A good morning to all of you. I hope your night was pleasent?"

Seeing the Lady Erizhetiana, all dressed up in her jewels & finery, he approaches her and says "My Lady, perhaps if we have a chance for a break today I may speak to you. Since you are a follower of Ishtar, and one who's opinion I value, I would like to hear your view on a dream I had last night if I may."

Finishing up his small morning meal, Sir Rovach leaves the dining area & exits the inn. He goes to the stables and retrieves his horse he left there. He walks his horse, a mid-size warhorse with chain barding, to the front of the inn. While waiting for the others to finish & come outside, Sir Rovach draws his two-handed sword and begins sharping it in order to pass the time.

When the others come out and they are ready to go, Sir Rovach will make a couple of suggestions to the companions. Since he is highly armored, he would like to ride in front with the Lady Stephanie as the party travels. He also recommends that the Lady Butternut follow closely behind himself & the Lady Stephanie; Butternut probally knows the land better than any of them (least likely to get lost) and would have the best chance to notice if anything is out of place as they travel (unusual sounds, strange behaviors from the local wildlife, etc). He would also like to ride at a somewhat brisk pace to arrive at the Makkees farm by mid-day at the latest; lives could be in danger and every minute could count in saving the Makkees!

Sitting in his saddle, he hears the Lady Stephanie shout "Let us ride!". His heart is lifted to hear such determination! This Lady would make an excellent Knight. His spirit lifted, he says "For the Makkees!" and rides forward to see what fate awaits them all today.
"You are
what you do
when it counts."

Aesa:

Aesa wakes up easily enough in the pre-dawn light. She hears what must be Stephanie moving about and glances over her shoulder. It would appear as though she is purposely not staring since Aesa is unclothed. She smiles to herself as she turns back and begins to get dressed so as not to continue her companion's discomfort, putting on each piece of her leather armor and ensuring its fit. Hopefully it won't be needed today either but it is best to be prepared. She gathers her things and is soon to follow Stephanie out.
“A glorious morning to you!” he will say as each of you make your way down. “I have prepared a meal for all of you that hopefully is to your liking.” With a wave of his hand, he personally leads you to a semi-private dining area as he is seemingly free from having to tend bar at this hour.
"That sounds quite pefect," Aesa replies and follows the innkeeper to where the meal awaits. Her mouth begins to water as she smells, then sees, all of the food laid out. Stephanie doesn't pause before digging in, but apparently the noble woman is above dining with the rest of us. Aesa takes a good portion from one of the hens, a sampling of the potatoes, some fruit and slices of bread upon which she lays thick some of the jams. She also pours some mead and sits at the table while the others join us.
Exiting his room, he procedes downstairs to a semi-private dining area where the rest of the party has gathered for breakfast. Taking just some bread & cheese, with a small mug of juice, Sir Rovach greets the companions "A good morning to all of you. I hope your night was pleasent?"
"A bit warm, but otherwise quite," Aesa replies, "and yours?"

Once the meal is finished and everyone prepares to go, Aesa will fetch her riding horse. She will pay to keep her draft horse stabled for at least two days. No matter what happens at the farm they will have to return here and the draft would only slow them down. Enough food and drink, even with the sweet breads the innkeeper has offered, will be taken along with her normal compliment of weapons and travelling gear. She will have no need for the winter gear so leaves that and the extra provisions with her other horse.

"I will offer to take the rear of our troupe," Aesa comments to Sir Rovach as he begins to assign riding spots for some of us. "I know forests. Not these mind you, but enough of them to help out nonetheless."
That which must be done will be done.

Since you are a follower of Ishtar, and one who's opinion I value, I would like to hear your view on a dream I had last night if I may."

Erizhi listens to what Rovach has to say as he approaches her first thing in the morning. She pauses, with a slight look of surprise on her face, as he mentions a dream just this past night. She considers her words for a moment before speaking. "I would indeed be very interested to hear the details of this... dream. And perhaps if it is a portent of today's events or regards the mission we are on in some way, it might behove us to take the time to discuss it before we depart. And even if it does not, then the long ride will give time to meditate upon the possible message and symbolism of the dream."

"I must return to my room to prepare my armor, but will endeavor to be quick so that perhaps we can discuss this as we collect our steeds?" she adds with a smile.

Taking her breakfast, she hurries back to her room, so as not to cause the group any delay. The dark-haired amazon just nods in response, but the fair-haired one gave her a funny look. Maybe that was some sort of courteous response for those northern barbarians? Alas, she had not the time to find out.

Passing the young serving girl at the table, she stops for a moment and the approaches the lass. She will say quietly, but not particularly in a whisper, "Please have the remaining foods that are not eaten packed up for our group to take with us for the ride. There are some extra silver coins in it for you, if you comply quickly, for we shall be in a hurry to leave once the meal is complete." Since the innkeeper was unwilling to accept payment for the meal, best to compensate the serving girl. Especially since she likely would have gotten the remaining food for her family, and the group would be taking it with them on the long ride.

Sir Rovach

The following conversation takes place out front of the inn while the party gathers (I'm sorry everyone for bouncing back like this; I'm still getting used to this form of RPing online instead of face-to-face! - "Sir Rovach")
"I thank you for your time, Lady Erizhetiana." replies Sir Rovach. "This means a great deal to me. I think I have some understanding of the dream, but could really use another perspective from someone who understands our ways."

Sir Rovach pauses, kind of unsure about where to start, then just begins describing the dream as best he can. "I believe I was on a beach back home during a great storm. All around me I was assaulted by the rain & thunder of a storm of such strength as to be unknown by our people. A strong wind also was around me too. Standing there, facing the storm, I was secure in my faith and ready to challenge all that was brought before me. As the lightning from the storm, which was the only lumination by which I could see, struck me it was like I was protected by an invisible shield. No harm came to me. I swear, if I could I would have drawn my sword and attacked the storm itself! Yet while I was protected, and the storm could not harm me, it was like I was being driven into the ground by it's force. Like some damn peg into a board!" Sir Rovach feels fustrated at this point, as his face surly must show as well. "Being unable to fight back....unable to strike that which assaulted me....is a feeling I do not enjoy. That, and knowing that my enemy was overhead, passing over me as a black shape just out of my vision, was torture to my sense of honor and my ability as a servant of Anu. But it wasn't the worst to come."

Taking a breath, the next words come from Sir Rovach much slower than the previous description of his dream. There also seems to be a mixture of sadness & disgust in his voice. "As the lightning struck, and I was able to see the land, all around me I saw my...our...countrymen milling around without purpose. Lost. Maybe even faithless. I called out to them, knowing if we could join together we would be an unstoppable force that could destroy this evil enemy." Looking into the distance, he whispers "But they would do nothing to stop that which struck all around them...."

Looking back at you, straight into your eyes, Sir Rovach continues. "But there was hope. As I struggled against being driven into the ground like some kind of tent stake, a group approached. In this group were the following creatures: a painted lion, a bear, a hound, a magpie and a badger. They did not say a word, but moved to pull me free. To stand with me against the evil where our own people...would not."

His description of the dream over, Sir Rovach turns away and stares off into the distance. "I believe the storm is the evil we face in the future, my Lady. But I also believe that the wind was the breeze of Anu himself, looking in our direction. For He is always with us. Who, or what this evil is, I have no idea. But I will face it bravely when it comes." A sharp edge enters his voice "And then let it beware."

"Now, why would I dream of animals coming to my rescue? I have no knowledge in forest lore. Yet I believe these animals represented those I travel with. Yes, even you." He turns back at you and smiles. "Perhaps you are the "Painted Lion", my Lady?" The smile fades and he continues "But then who is the bear? The hound? Or the magpie or badger? And why these creatures to represent our companions?"

Sir Rovach sighs, straightens up and composes himself. "I thank you for listening to me, Lady Erizhetiana. Please don't let thoughts of this dream distract you from the importance of our mission. That has a higher priority than some insubstantial dream. But if you find yourself with just a few minutes to contemplate what I have just told you, I would desire to hear your thoughts on the matter."

Erizhetiana of Lotan -

That is one advantage of MB games is that you can go back and fill things in. Each post is not necessarily chronologoical!

Erizhi will head for the stables once her armor is in place and everything ready to go. There she collects her horse and packs and then assembles in the front of the inn. She will give the young serving girl who collected up the food (assuming she does do so), 11 silver coins for her efforts. Eleven being a lucky number in Immaterian superstition.

Sir Rovach approaches, apparently interested in discussing his dream. In truth, Erizhi is anxious to hear the details herself.

"I thank you for your time, Lady Erizhetiana." replies Sir Rovach. "This means a great deal to me. I think I have some understanding of the dream, but could really use another perspective from someone who understands our ways."

"As I said, it may prove useful and if nothing else, it will allow some thought on the road to the Makees farm."

Rovach starts to tell about his dream with vivid details. Clearly he was affected by it deeply, based on his emotional explanation. She considers his words, but does not interrupt as he continues with the story. As it reaches its conclusion, Rovach seem lost in contemplation.

Erizhi considers her words as she runs the story back through her head again. "Surely the storm is representative of conflict in its most simple form. The evil enemy which is the source of this conflict however seems to have only a clue of lightning and a dark manifestation and the presence of night or darkness. Marduk and Ramman are both dieties of the storm. But I cannot see either of them in conflict with Anu. Anshar is the patron of darkness and night. This all still seems very unclear to me."

"As for the circumstance of our people, that appears to be more clear. There is the thought that the old ways of our people do not work and we need to have change, but change is slow to come. Or this 'lost' situation could be the result of that change, the loss of important connections that are required. Perhaps it is not clear as I first thought," she adds, her brow furrowing with deep thought.

"Now the 5 animals in your vision seem very clear. The painted lion is most likely myself, as you suggest. The sacred animal of Ishtar is indeed the lion and well," she thrusts her arms wide and looks down at herself, "that would be one way to describe me," she finishes with a laugh. "Hmmm... The bear and the hound are likely our amazon companions. The hound could be Stephanie, a domesticated and loyal animal willing to fight for its companions, while Aesa, that northern barbarian could be the bear. I would doubt they are vice versa. The magpie is a dark bird, much like Kaelyn. " And a thief she thinks to herself. Does that mean that he is one as well? "That would leave the badger as our miniature Butternut and judging by her anger in the Inn last night, it is an appropriate avatar." She stops and thinks for a moment. "So is it just circumstance, or does your vision indicate that this collection has been assembled for a reason. Perhaps the gods had a hand in our meeting?" She wrinkles her nose at that thought, not sure if it would be possible. They all seem so 'normal'. No heroes of legend in such a group. Well, not yet anyway, she let herself muse...

"Much to think about, indeed. Much to contemplate. I do not think that it will keep my thoughts away from our mission. In truth, until we reach the Makees farm, there is not much to think about as so much about them is unknown, unless we encounter trouble en route. A 'painted' lion, indeed," she says with a faraway look in her eyes. After a long pause, she will lean in and whisper, "Oddly, I had my own vision last night, just before waking. It was not so involved as yours, but it was back in Lotan and it did involve a lion. A giant lion." She leans back out and says nothing more about it.

"I hope that some further insight will come to me while I meditate on your vision, Sir Rovach." Unless he has more to add, Erizhi will be ready to head out with the others all assembling here at the Inn. The first rays of light were just beginning to creep into the darkened sky, beginning to chase away the night and start a new day.

Butternut:
"About a two days ride,” Stephanie replies shaking the small woman's hand. “I'm not from the village itself as it sits in the forest, but rather my family farm on the outskirts.”
"That sounds about right; I think we visited there once when I was a child. Our clanhome was in roughly the same direction, but not so far." Butternut pauses in an attempt to master her emotions. "You may have heard of the goblin raid seven years ago that wiped out the Foxburr clan..."

Wakened early by one of the inn's staff, Butternut is disgruntled by the lack of porridge. When she asks about it, she is assured that the food will be available 'soon'. Grumbling to herself, the halfling washes up at the bowl found in the corner, then puts her armor back on over the undergarments she slept in. Coming downstairs earlier than she had anticipated, due to the lack of porridge, Butternut is surprised to find that Master Torvin is already up. Before she can ask him about her porridge, he speaks up and addresses the group.

"Master Torvin! You're up early after such a late night," Butternut says as she surveys the room full of food. "Thank you! This looks delicious!" Not one to pass up such an opportunity, Butternut quickly takes a seat and dives into the food. For one so small, she eats an incredible amount; Butternut has some of everything, and seconds of most of it. If anyone could bear to watch her despite her abysmal table manners, they might be inclined to think that she had consumed her own weight in food! She hardly even notices the fancy foreigner who shows up just long enough to grab some food and then disappear again.
Exiting his room, he procedes downstairs to a semi-private dining area where the rest of the party has gathered for breakfast. Taking just some bread & cheese, with a small mug of juice, Sir Rovach greets the companions. "A good morning to all of you. I hope your night was pleasent?"
"'Morning," Butternut replies, licking the honey and jam from her fingers. "I slept fine. And you?"

As the meal wraps up, Butternut slips a silver coin under her plate for the serving girl or whomever does the cleaning up. She also collects the basket of breads that the innkeeper mentioned on her way out; she's certain she has room for it in her saddlebags. "Thanks, Master Torvin, for your generous hospitality," she says as she heads out to fetch her pony and gear.

They meet up out front with their various mounts; everyone appears to be ready to begin their ride out to the Makkee's farm.
Butternut snorts. "With all the noise made by you humans - and especially your heavy armor - my skills would be wasted riding behind you. As a hunter and scout, if you want me to be able to put my training to full use, I should ride well out in front of the rest of you.

"And when we get near the farm, it would be wise to let me scout the area before any of the rest of you go charging in."

Kaelyn
After memorizing his spells for the coming day, he undresses, his armor carelessly thrown about his room as a pig would throw mud. Kaelyn falls asleep though the noise is a little much for him in the beginning.
Hearing a rapping upon his door, his fingers curl underneath his pillow upon the hilt of his dagger. Slowly looking toward the door. “I am well thank you!” he calls back. As he slowly rises and rubs the sleep from his eyes. “It is morning already?” I’ll be out in a moment.”
A muffled apology through the door soon meets his ear as he gathers up his armor and dresses in it, strapping his short swords to his hips and daggers to his chest and arms.
“A glorious morning to you!” he will say as each of you make your way down. “I have prepared a meal for all of you that hopefully is to your liking.” With a wave of his hand, he personally leads you to a semi-private dining area as he is seemingly free from having to tend bar at this hour.
“And good morning to you as well. You seem to be in a chipper mood this morning,” he said evenly as he rubbed his left eye. Following the innkeeper, Kaelyn sees the breakfast lay out and he can’t help but wonder if so fine a meal might be their last.
Exiting his room, he procedes downstairs to a semi-private dining area where the rest of the party has gathered for breakfast. Taking just some bread & cheese, with a small mug of juice, Sir Rovach greets the companions. "A good morning to all of you. I hope your night was pleasant?"
Through sleepy blue eyes, he said. “Good morning to you as well. Alas, the night was far less long enough.” He addressed everyone in turn,”I hope all slept well?" as he sat down and made himself a plate of roast beef, bacon, bread and a few jams.
“For the road I have a basket of fresh baked breads filled with honey and glazed on top,” the innkeeper adds. “Oh they are divine trust me. I have eaten far more than my share over the years!” he adds with great mirth.
“Something tells me they will not last that long, if they are as good as you say.” He says with a half smirk his eyes alight with mirth.
Soon enough breakfast is over and he takes his gear with him. As he awaits the others, he tests his shortbow string, sharpens his blades. Butternut snorts. "With all the noise made by you humans - and especially your heavy armor - my skills would be wasted riding behind you. As a hunter and scout, if you want me to be able to put my training to full use, I should ride well out in front of the rest of you.

"And when we get near the farm, it would be wise to let me scout the area before any of the rest of you go charging in.
Soon the others speak of their riding order, which he does not object to, “I will ride toward the center of our column, though if Ms. Butternut wishes to have help scouting the farm I can do so. I have some skills in getting into places unnoticed, when the need arises.”

Sir Rovach listens to the words of Lady Butternut & Mister Kaelyn. He knows he's not the leader of any of these people, but a companion of there's in common cause. And there is great wisdom in their words.

Sir Rovach responds to Lady Butternut after hearing what she & Mister Kaelyn have to say. "There is wisdom in what you say, my Lady. I was concerned for your safety if you would happen to run into trouble. Nay, pray take no offense! It is obvious you have skill with a blade but as a companion, it is a worry I have all the same & would not like to see harm come to you. And we were too far to come to your aid."

Sir Rovach motions to Kaelyn and speaks to both of them. "Both of you have skills in scouting and moving silently if you want." Interesting skills to have, wonders Sir Rovach. "Perhaps the two of you could work together. Besides having extra eyes out front, that way if trouble comes that you cannot avoid you could watch each others back until the rest of us could come to aid. What say you two?"

Erizhetiana -
“And to you, Master Torvin,” she will respond, as she pads her way downstairs, amidst the chimes of her anklets. She stops him for a moment to ask a question before being led to the dining area. “I am curious about a matter of security,” she will say just above a whisper. “Are there means to secure valuables while we are away?”
“Not much passes for security in this part of the kingdom,” the innkeeper replies. “Depending on what you might be looking to store I can lock it up in my heavy chest. However if it’s very much, you would have better luck at the constable’s. If you keep your room locked it should be quite safe for most things,” he will add.
She looks at the task, not as daunting as it might first seem as most of the others consume healthy portions of food. She will turn back to you and say, “I shall pack it as best can. M’lady.”

You can venture a guess that the foods dripping with juices and the sort will not pack well or, at best, be much drier and less flavorful when eaten later.

Butternut -
As the meal wraps up, Butternut slips a silver coin under her plate for the serving girl or whomever does the cleaning up. She also collects the basket of breads that the innkeeper mentioned on her way out; she's certain she has room for it in her saddlebags. "Thanks, Master Torvin, for your generous hospitality," she says as she heads out to fetch her pony and gear.
“You are most welcome my friend,” the innkeeper replies with a warm smile.

The serving girl is very grateful for all of the coins given her, directly or otherwise. She will offer a sweet smile of thanks to any that she knows the giver to be. She will work diligently to clear plates and refill mugs as needed and handle any special requests.

Preparations are made and after a wonderful surprise meal is consumed, all of you collect your horses and whatever gear you choose to take. Most plan to be returning to the village directly after investigating the Makkee farm, hopefully with good news.

As the group mounts up, you are all aware of a number of eyes watching you even in the dim light of the early morning. Scores of merchants and farmers are opening stalls and militia patrol the roads, yet most seem to stop what they are doing to witness this spectacle. Stephanie feels quite certain many of the eyes are ones she knows even if she doesn’t stare into the crowd to confirm.

All of you head out taking the west road. Butternut leads with Sir Rovach and Stephanie close behind for the moment. Erizhetiana and Kaelyn ride in the middle while Aesa brings up the rear. After leaving the village proper, the group spreads out a bit more with Kaelyn riding point with Butternut at times should he so desire.

The morning is quiet and you pass no travelers in either direction. It would seem all that were to arrive for the start of the spring festival have done so already. As the sun continues to climb into the sky and warm the mildly-cool spring air it is hard not to be taken in by the peacefulness of the land. Even the clouds overhead are fluffy and lazy this morning. The forest is thinned in most parts not only for the road but the surrounding fields and farms. Birds can be heard although they fall silent as the horses thunder past. Occasionally a mooing cow or clucking hen make themselves known but otherwise it is just the sound of horseshoes on packed dirt for distraction.

The road winds north at times but almost remains constantly headed west. Butternut wonders if any of the old ox trails she had found years past still exist and takes a gamble on a few. Most are long overgrown but she can see the trail clearly enough and is pleased with herself having trimmed long minutes off of the lengthy ride. On occasion though, the group must dismount and walk their horses as underbrush and rogue trees make passing the trails nigh-impossible while riding. Still it is a pleasant diversion and does not cost any ghastly amount of time.

On one such trail Butternut sees a farm that has long fallen to decay. Everything is overgrown and even the buildings can not stand up to the encroaching land wishing to retake what was once its own. Thoughts of concern creep into Butternut’s head unbidden but this isn’t recent work. Stephanie can confirm upon seeing it that this was once the Ozmoore farm but years past Mr. Ozmoore took ill and didn’t survive and his widow was unable to keep up with the heavy dual burden of farming and grieving. Instead it is believed she moved to Talltael and took up as a seamstress as was her skill before marrying her husband and moving out here. The land could still be wrested back under control and the farm turned profitable, but no one seems to have interest or means to purchase the land all of these years.

After taking a short break near midday, Stephanie is certain that the Makkee farm is no more than two miles distant. It seems that soon the questions revolving around the Makkees are to be answered.

However if it’s very much, you would have better luck at the constable’s. If you keep your room locked it should be quite safe for most things,” he will add.

Erizhi considers for a moment and then decides that the Inn seems as safe a place as any at this point. She will take the opportunity to store the monetary valuables with the innkeeper in his heavy chest and the rest of her items locked in her room.

"Very well," Erizhetiana says simply.

Later everything is packed up and Erizhi will hand the girl her 11 silver galleons. The girl smiles back sweetly and sincerely and Erizhi is pleased that her faith in the girl well-placed.

The gathering crowd outside the inn begins to take notice of them as the group assembles for their imminent departure. The attention doesn't bother the priestess, but she does take some time to scan the crowd for anyone who might appear other than normal or be taking a more than inquisitive interest in their acyions.

Erizhi will settle in to the center of the group as they ride. Eventually she finds herself with only Aesa behind her. She pays enough attention to stay close enough to the riders in front of her, but her thoughts are taken up by the dream images that she was presented with. If any of her companions wishes to talk she will be happy to maintain a conversation as long as able, but does not initiate any at this point.

Finally, after a short break, the dark-haired amazon indicates that they are very close to the farm. Erizhi will smile at this, as she is not thrilled with riding much longer and could use a diversion for her mind and attention.

Butternut:
Soon the others speak of their riding order, which he does not object to, “I will ride toward the center of our column, though if Ms. Butternut wishes to have help scouting the farm I can do so. I have some skills in getting into places unnoticed, when the need arises.”

Butternut raises an eyebrow at Kaelyn's comment, but doesn't say anything. Sir Rovach's fretting about her well-being makes him sound soft and weak; perhaps that's why he wears so much heavy armor. Hopefully, he'll be able to handle himself in a real battle; otherwise, he'll just be a liability.

"I think Kaelyn has the right idea: riding nearer the back of the group where he can keep an eye on the road behind us, then joining me in scouting once we reach the farm."

It's not long before they are on the road. Butternut hadn't spotted any threats on her way into town yesterday, and isn't surprised that they find none today. She spots the occasional wild animal, but none that show an aggressiveness toward the group of riders. About mid-morning, she pulls a couple of the honey-breads from her saddlebags and eats them as she rides. Delicious! Master Torvin always was an excellent baker.

Now and again, Butternut is able to shave a few precious minutes off their route by taking some old trails that she recalls. While not every one of them works out, overall they do seem to gain a little time. In one instance, they come upon an abandoned farmstead. At first, Butternut is alarmed and wonders if this is related in some way to the missing Makkees. However, a careful scan of the area seems to corroborate Stephanie's claim that this happened some years ago. Still, the land appears to be capable of being returned to productive use once again with some effort.

A short break around mid-day is quite welcome, and Butternut is more than happy to share a bite or three (or seventeen) of whatever food remains from this morning. Not long afterward, Stephanie notifies them that they are approaching the farm.

"I recommend that we stop here, and Kaelyn and I proceed to scout the farm. He and I should approach to just within the near edge of woods bordering the fields, then split and circle the grounds. Kaelyn, do you prefer to circle north or south? We can meet on the far side."

Aesa:

Aesa doesnt pay much mind to the common folk watching our group prepare to depart. With Stephanie's and Sir Rovach's shouted words, she is only surprised more haven't flocked to see what is going on.

The morning ride is quite enjoyable although the pace is brisk. The lack of others on the road doesn't draw any suspicion for her as she is used to travelling large tracts of northern land without seeing a single soul. She detects no one following them and nothing out of the ordinary with the wildlife as it typically tends to stay well clear of humanoid traipsing anyway.

The only excitement to be had is the coming upon an abandoned farm, but it is long since succumbed to the wilderness. There seems no evidence of foul play and so the group travels on. Nearing midday a stop is called and Stephanie explains over our meal that we are quite close now to the Makkee farm. Discussion next begins over how to best scout the farm.
"I recommend that we stop here, and Kaelyn and I proceed to scout the farm. He and I should approach to just within the near edge of woods bordering the fields, then split and circle the grounds. Kaelyn, do you prefer to circle north or south? We can meet on the far side."
"Since I do not know the skills either of you posses in scouting wilderness areas I can not say whether both of you are the best choices," Aesa remarks, "although your trail blazing abilities seem quite capable, Butternut. I am adept at doing such tasks as well should we have a desire or need for a third as my skill with a blade is the lesser of what I am proficient in."
That which must be done will be done.

"I think Kaelyn has the right idea: riding nearer the back of the group where he can keep an eye on the road behind us, then joining me in scouting once we reach the farm."
“I would have to agree.” He says evenly.

The ride out of town is fairly uneventful. No riders can be seen coming or going, making kaelyn begin to look at the landscape about him and humming lightly to himself. Soon a abandoned farm comes into view. After Stephanie’s assessment of the farm it had been vacant for sometime, but for the most part it did not look like the wilderness has fully reclaimed the farm

At the mid day break, Kaelyn dismounts his horse, tethering it to a nearby tree as he stretched, oh how his hide quarters ached! The soft rumbling of his belly soon make him reach into his saddle bag and take out a honey cake, he eats it solely savoring the sweet nectared cake.

Sveral minutes later we learn that the farm is but 2 miles ahead, and Butternut says :

"I recommend that we stop here, and Kaelyn and I proceed to scout the farm. He and I should approach to just within the near edge of woods bordering the fields, then split and circle the grounds. Kaelyn, do you prefer to circle north or south? We can meet on the far side."

“I must admit,” Hearing Aesa’s comments, “ I am far more adept when in cities or towns. When I spoke of scouting, I thought you meant scouting the farm buildings as well. If Aesa feels she would be better suited for the task, by all means." he said with a wave of his hand.

If the others still want him to scout the outskirts of the farm he will do so, but will remain with those waiting if Aesa, wishes to scout the perimeter.

Butternut pauses to consider the words of both Aesa and Kaelyn. She's not entirely sure of the skill sets of either, but is starting to get some idea. "Actually, having a spotter wouldn't be a bad idea. How about you stay at the edge of the farm and watch for unusual activity, Kaelyn, while Aesa and I scout the perimeter? Aesa, can you take the north verge while I take the south?"

If the others agree, Butternut will leave Springheel tied to a tree and lead Aesa and Kaelyn to the edge of the farm, making sure to stay in the cover of the trees.

His confession confirms Aesa's suspicions that he wasn't as at ease in the wilderness as her and Butternut. She couldn't be completely sure until he revealed it however.

"That sounds perfectly fine," Aesa replies. She will dismount and, once we are ready to head out, she will cast Invisibility to Animals upon herself so as to not scare or attract any of the farm livestock. "See you there," she says to Butternut with a smile and begins to move out, her broad-bladed sword still sheathed but in her hand. After a few paces, she pauses and concentrates. When she is done, the big lumbering pale golden bear that is Aesa will make her way to the farm and scout the area designated. She will keep off the road and try to use any lightly forested areas that remain to her advantage.

The trio of scouts discuss plans over a light meal and then they depart. The other three not scouting remain where they are about two miles out from the Makkee farm. Butternut leads the way with Kaelyn and Aesa right behind her after Aesa casts a spell that will make herself unseen to normal animals. Soon however, Aesa uses her druidic ability to shape change into a northern golden bear! It isn’t long before the bear trots off into the light woods to the north of the road and is soon gone from sight.

Butternut and Kaelyn continue on until the rise in the road is seen. Here Butternut dips off the road herself and starts to circle down to scout out the southern portion of the farm. Kaelyn finds a good spot across the road where the rise gives a good vantage point to see the buildings about 100 yards north of him in a slight depression.

Aesa comes out of the light woods in the northeastern part of the farm and begins her scouting. Both she and Butternut will notice that all of the farm’s livestock is seemingly roaming about but not a single animal is within 50 yards of where the main buildings are. Aesa notes most are in the grazing fields that stretch out far to the north away from the main compound. Aesa will note some damage to the stables’ surrounding fencing as well as the cattle corral. If she had to guess it would seem as though the animals were spooked enough to break free of their confines.

Butternut observes a grimmer sight as she circles around the south to the southwest of the farm. She spots three bodies. One is outside of the main house, one is near the first guest house and the third is about twenty yards from the storage shed. There are no crows or scavengers about however, but from the stillness of the bodies it appears that whatever happened here was likely well finished hours ago. She is unable to discern much from this distance but all three appear to be adults of human size and the one near the main house is most likely female.

The doors to the main house and every other building except the third barn are wide open. Until Butternut gets closer she can not tell about any tracks or footprints, but the packed mud and earth looks well traveled between all the buildings so it may be difficult to determine much.

Halfling and bear meet up on the far side of the farm just past the newly-planted crops without incident or challenge. Kaelyn can make out where they are meeting up near some light woods there and so far no one has approached on the road from either direction.

Kaelyn

Placing his quiver of arrows over his shoulder and grabbing his shortbow, kaelyn looks to the other scouts to make sure they are ready.

Making off with the others before him, Kaelyn follows quickly behind. Knocking an arrow to his shortbow, he hears the steps behind him multiple causing him to look back only to not see Aesa but a huge golden bear!

His eyes go wide, and he raises his bow up and begins to pull back as he stumbles backward and falls on his butt, the arrow going flying as he bottom out. For several moments he watches the bear gingerly walk away, looking back at butternut, he can’t help but keep a shocked look from his face, “Did you see that?” he asks the Halfling.

Coming to a rise in the road, Kaelyn watches out for the others as they make their way around the farm, glancing to his left and right. He notices no traffic at all on the road, Slowly his eyes scan the tree line looking for any sign of trouble, yet none has come as of yet. Within several minutes the others meet up on the opposite side of the farm.

Kaelyn will remain vigilant on his look out position. If he does see anyone coming he will step back into the shade of the landscape and hide. {and retreive his arrow if possible}

Stephanie:
Butternut wrote:"That sounds about right; I think we visited there once when I was a child. Our clanhome was in roughly the same direction, but not so far." Butternut pauses in an attempt to master her emotions. "You may have heard of the goblin raid seven years ago that wiped out the Foxburr clan..."
“I might have,” Stephanie admits. “But I can't say that I remember what you speak of. But I would have only been a child of 10 at that time, so it might have been something the my parents heard of but didn’t share with their children.

Fortunately the talk of the strange dream the paladin had occurred while Stephanie was away retrieving her mount. After all, the notion of considering her to be a loyal and domesticated hound might lead to the speaker taking a punch in the face....

Much to the swordswoman’s surprise, the city streets are already teeming with folk. Merchants opening up for the days festival, guards on patrols and and festival visitors. They all seem to be watching as we being our journey. Many of the faces in the crowd are familiar; people that Steph has taken care of problems they've had with her usual use of brute force. Being the source of so much scrutiny is a bit unnerving and Steph is thankful to be quickly out of town.

“I could have saved my self all kinds of travel time,” Stephanie notes rhetorically. “I just rode in this way yesterday, even passing the road that leads to the Makkee farm.”

Butternut leads us down some side trails that seems to save travel time so it is a good thing. We pass close to the old Ozmoore farm and that reminds Stephanie of what happened there yeas pass.

“I'm surprised that none of the other farmers didn’t purchase the land after it was abandoned. The Shepard family talked about taking it over, but must not have.”

The ride comes to a stop and lunch is had. After eating, Stephanie dons her piecemeal armor since they are close to the Makkee farm now while the scouts are out doing their thing.

As the scouts prepare to depart, she catches a glimpse of Aesa stepping away and somehow changing forms into that a golden bear! Stephanie’s mouth drops open in shock and awe from the sight!

“That explains a great many things,” the swordswoman says to no one in particular.

Once in her armor, Steph has her sword and shield at the ready and waits for the scouts to return.

Sir Rovach
As the group mounts up, you are all aware of a number of eyes watching you even in the dim light of the early morning. Scores of merchants and farmers are opening stalls and militia patrol the roads, yet most seem to stop what they are doing to witness this spectacle. Stephanie feels quite certain many of the eyes are ones she knows even if she doesn’t stare into the crowd to confirm.
As Sir Rovach rides out of town with the other companions, he is somewhat surprised by the townsfolk who are out watching them. He is used to being sent off with some kind of spectacle, such as when the knights were sent out to deal with marauding goblins or raiders. But that so many seemed to know of their leaving. "Word travels fast in small villages." Sir Rovach says quietly to himself. He'll make a note to remember that in the future. Then again too, he thinks as he looks at his other companions, a group such as ours does sort of stand out from the normal farmers & merchants that are here conducting business.

As they ride to the Makkee farm, Sir Rovach keeps his eyes scanning the horizon not only to the front but the sides as well. Many times when the road looks clear, Sir Atohmos would tell him, a column will get flanked from the sides by an enemy. He gives his thanks to Anu for the skills of Butternut in leading them by the quickest route to the Makkee's. His sense of honor tells him he wants to charge forward, riding as fast as he can to come to the assistance of the Makkee's, yet his mind tells him that could just get him killed faster if the area is infested with hostile forces. So he will be patient, watching the area as they travel and periodically thinking about his dream.
The ride comes to a stop and lunch is had. After eating, Stephanie dons her piecemeal armor since they are close to the Makkee farm now while the scouts are out doing their thing.
Soon however, Aesa uses her druidic ability to shape change into a northern golden bear!
Sir Rovach finishes up his lunch & secures his horse. Drawing his two-handed sword, Sir Rovach kneels and says a quiet prayer to Anu. When finished, he stands & places his helm over his head, holding his sword at the ready while the scouts depart. While doing so, he sees Lady Aesa change into a golden bear! Not prepared for this type of magic from his companion, he is a first surprised. Then the realization dawns on him: he now knows who is the bear of his dream. Lady Erizhetiana is obviously the painted lion & of them all Butternut seems to have the personality of the badger. But between Mister Kaelyn & Lady Stephanie: who is the hound and who is the magpie? And what characteristics of these creatures do they mirror?

Walking over the Stephanie, Sir Rovach says "While we wait for our companions return, we may want to watch the area around us so we are not caught unaware. I will watch the area over here," Sir Rovach motions with his hand the direction the scouts departed in & to the left, "if you would like to watch in that direction." Sir Rovach motions with his hand once again, this time in the direction the scouts departed & to the right. "What do you think, my Lady?"

“Okay,” Stephanie says with a shrug. “Sounds fine to me.”

Grabbing her shield, Stephanie moves off in the direction to see if anyone or thing is about.

Butternut:
“I might have,” Stephanie admits. “But I can't say that I remember what you speak of. But I would have only been a child of 10 at that time, so it might have been something the my parents heard of but didn’t share with their children.
"Oh!" Butternut is surprised that Stephanie is so young. Will she ever get used to the short lifespans of these people?
“I'm surprised that none of the other farmers didn’t purchase the land after it was abandoned. The Shepard family talked about taking it over, but must not have.”
"Apparently not," Butternut says, gazing about the abandoned farm. "I don't think I know the Shepards. Name doesn't sound familiar, anyway."

===
When Aesa bids her farewell, Butternut turns and begins to glide away through the underbrush. Her senses are focussed in an arc ahead of her, and thus doesn't note Aesa change of form some ways behind her. Though she moves at a fair pace, Butternut makes little noise and seems almost to melt into the foliage as she disappears from sight.
The ranger is just fading from view when he hears Kaelyn call out behind her. "See what?" she growls softly as she turns to look back at him, unhappy about being interrupted. Aesa seems to have passed out of sight already, impressing Butternut with her woodslore.

As she scouts the farm, Butternut takes notice of the animals, who all seem to be avoiding the area around the buildings. This reads as a warning sign to her, as animals are very sensitive to danger. Worse yet, Butternut spots a body near what she guesses must be a guest house or quarters for the farm hands. Later, she spots another near the main house, and another in the vicinity of what appears to be a storage shed. All of the bodies are too far away to get a good look at. The lack of scavengers again indicates the possibility of danger nearby.

Reaching the woods on the west side of the farm, Butternut waits for Aesa to join her. A few minutes later, a bear comes shambling in her direction! Struggling to remain calm, Butternut backs slowly away while using her training to try to read the beast's intentions. It doesn't appear aggressive, which is a relief, though Butternut doesn't recall seeing this species before. Still, could this bear have been what killed those people?! She carefully moves in the direction of a tree trunk in case she needs to try to climb out of the bear's reach. "Nice bear... Good bear... Butternut wouldn't be tasty..." she says soothingly, attempting to act in a placating manner.

Aesa:

Aesa the bear makes her way through the light woods easily enough, seeing glimpses of what must be the farm as she gets closer. There isn't another farm anywhere close so this must be the one she surmises. Coming out of the woods she sees that no animals are about. Probably didn't need that spell, she thinks to her bear self. Still there was no way of knowing.

As she crosses the northern part of the farm she sees the damage done to the stables and corral. Looks to be made from the inside, she thinks, the animals wanted out badly. She doesn't see much of anything else but a large number of cattle and some other animals in what must be grazing fields. Her nose though does pick up the stench of death and that doesn't bode well. Aesa starts looking for a place to meet Butternut and sees some trees not too far from where she suggested. In fact it would seem the halfling is nearly there already.

What is she doing? Aesa thinks. Then it dawns on her that she must not have noticed the change. Not much of a woodswoman if she didn't know a bear was behind her for 100 paces, she grumbles. She was hoping not to give up her bear form quite so soon but this obviously doesn't look promising. She will sit down on her big rump and tilt her head to one side looking at Butternut. Aesa will point her nose towards the farm and then back pointedly at the halfling. She won't make any threatening moves unless attacked.
That which must be done will be done.

Erizhetiana of Lotan -

After the mid-day meal, the group plans their scouting of the Makee farm. We are close to our destination and that makes Erizhi pleased.

The three with the skills of stealth make their way toward the farm and Rovach has the dark amazon Stephanie and himself watch for trouble. Apparently unneeded in the moment, Erizhi will find a comfortable place to sit and wait for the scouting to complete. Her expectations are that unfortunately after such a long time, there will be little to see except for the final results of what may have happened here.

Erizhi is impressed when Aesa, the northern barbarian, suddenly changes form into that of a golden bear. There is a new level of respect for her, if she is able to manage such magicks. But there is an unexpected commotion. Kaelyn apparently did not see her transform and was quite surprised to see a large bear moving behind him.

Erizhi cannot contain herself. She bursts into a fit of giggles, trying very hard to keep quiet and as muffled as possible. After a few moments, she manages to recompose herself and walks over to Rovach. "Well, it seems that I was correct in my assessment of Aesa, as well, regarding your dream," she says. (If you missed it, she commented on the dream several posts ago.) "Even more correct that I would have first imagined!" she adds with a slight chuckle, the smile on her face from earlier not having faded.

"I understand that the prudent thing to do is to scout the area and to proceed with caution in such a situation as this, but I also feel that it has been at least 2 days since the happenings here occurred and perhaps even another. I fear that we will not be on any sort of rescue mission, but rather possibly one of vengeance," she says more somberly. She keeps her mace secured, and stand with her hands on her hips. Waiting..... and trying to be patient.

The bear plops itself down and gives Butternut a questioning look. It takes a moment for the halfling to battle down her consternation, but it occurs to her that she's never seen an animal act in quite this way. Admittedly, she's not familiar with this species, but there was something strangely... human in the gesture.

Before Butternut can figure out what that means, the bear turns its head in the direction of the farm, then looks at her. Butternut's eyes grow big with surprise; it's almost as though the bear were trying to communicate with her. Galen had told her that many animals were smarter than most people thought, but this is beyond what she had expected. Then again, she's seen a dog behave in a similar fashion, so why not a bear. "Okay, bear, are you trying to tell me something? Maybe something about those bodies back there?"

As Erizhi waits, she thinks about her musings on the road here. Moving back close to Rovach, she speaks. "I have had some time to contemplate on the trip here. While Marduk could be one to oppose Anu, such an opposition would be likely more honorable than that which your dream seemed to suggest. Ramman on the other hand could be a possibility. His followers also operate at night and an alliance between Ramman and Anshar could prove to be rather diabolical." She pauses in her musings to see what Rovach thinks on this idea.

"Indeed" responds Sir Rovach to Lady Erizhetiana. "The image of "the bear" does seem quite appropriate for Lady Aesa."

Continuing this line of thought, Sir Rovach say "So, it appears that you are the "painted lion" my Lady. And Butternut seems to have the personality of "the badger". That leaves Mister Kaelyn & Lady Stephanie. Whom do you think is "the hound" and "the magpie"? If I was to think on the particular animals themselves, a hound can be loyal. A tracker to prey. A guard and a hunter if needed." Sir Rovach smilies "Of course, this is based on my experience in their use in warfare, not in animal handling. We don't have much association with magpie's in the knightly order, so my knowledge of their behaviors is much more lacking."

"I fear you may be right, my Lady". Sir Rovach looks somber at this thought. "My heart hopes to find survivors. Indeed I pray it is so. But my mind sees your logic and agrees with you. Yet I will hold out hope yet. But I am ready for the other option if needed. Murder typically is punishable by death in most civilized lands, which this appears to be. And we are here with the blessing of the local constable as his agents, he who oversees the law hereabouts. I am prepared for such a duty. But are the others, do you think?"

Alright this isn't getting us anywhere, Aesa thinks as attempts to figure out any other alternatives. Something Butternut says tells her there is no more time for these games..

Where there was once a bear there is now Aesa sitting before Butternut, her broad bladed sword still sheathed and in her hand just like before she transformed. Standing up she says, "I was trying to find out what you had discovered while scouting. Apparently that there are bodies has changed this mission altogether. We may already be too late," she adds grimly.

"We need to return quickly and inform the others, or at least one of us does," Aesa continues. "Given my assessment, the animals broke free of their pens and fled to the grazing fields there," she indicates with a wave of her hand to the north. "That none have returned means something may still be afoot on the farm, or it could just be the stench of death keeping them away."

"My decision is one or two of us return to the others with all haste while eyes are kept on the farm," Aesa suggests. "I can't see Kaelyn, so he seems to have found a good hiding place and may be the best choice for at least one to stay."
That which must be done will be done.

Erizhetiana wrinkles her nose for a second, hearing Rovach's question. Did he not remember the conversation they had out front of the inn this morning before they left? She pauses as she considers her words. "Well, I still feel just as strongly as I stated this morning," she begins. "The lion is the sacred animal of Ishtar and the bear now is clearly revealed to be Aesa. I do agree that your assessment of the badger is also correct. I believe the hound to be our dark-haired amazon, Stephanie, and that leaves the magpie, the dark bird, clearly as Kaelyn. I think that is an easy choice as well, opportunistic and a bit sneaky."

"It is difficult to say without direct experience. I believe any of us six are capabale of killing when necessary, however. Meteing out justice in battle is a bit different than against a captured prisoner. That is where we will see the strength of our companions' convictions."

As for me, my dream was far less direct, but just as ominous. I was looking at Lotan from a high hill above the city. It was a marvelous sight, as the last rays of sunlight swept over the city. A beautiful sunset. Then suddenly there was a lion, a giant lion. It met my gaze and I don't know how to explain the feeling that it gave me. But it was not pleasant. Not directed at me, but at Lotan and the Shining Coast. And not anger, but sadness or sorrow or something that i could not tell exactly. It was then that the sunset took on a more ominous tone, as though a sign of the sun setting on our empire? I am a bit unsettled about the thought, even now,...."

"Mmmm, perhaps not so ominous as our first impressions might lead us to believe." Sir Rovach pauses then continues "Let's think on these dreams a different way. Perhaps we might have gotten them wrong. All things come to an end, my Lady. Nothing last forever. Even Immater must eventually fade away into history, much like the ancient Akorians. But, sometimes what comes from that ending can be better than what came before it. Perhaps the storm from my dream doesn't solely represent a great evil, but a overall change that is coming to our people. Perhaps what you see is the sadness of Ishtar, when she looks down upon what our people & nation has become, compaired to it's nobility of old. Perhaps, my Lady, from this change we have the opportunity to help our Gods & people build a better Immater, ensuring the strengths we have while correcting the areas we may have fallen short. Looking over at Lady Stephanie, Sir Rovach asks "Please refresh my memory, but do you have a guess as to what would make our noble swordswoman the "hound" of my dream? Her loyalty? Or perhaps she will be the one to lead us to our goal? Or maybe some other reason? Perhaps she has abilities like Lady Aesa does."

While waiting for an answer from Lady Erizhetiana, Sir Rovach will continue to watch his area for approaching trouble or the return of their scouts from the farm, helmet worn & sword at the ready.

Erizhi listens to Rovach tell his thoughts. She makes a face and he cannot tell if it is dissappointment in the train of thought or dismay at the process that was being described. "Hmmph....," she offers and says nothing further.

"So, you think Mister Kaelyn is the opportunistic and sneaky type? Perhaps. Yet his heart contained no evil in it, my Lady. So if all the above is true, I wonder what kind of companion of ours he will turn out to be? For now, I will judge him on his actions I see, and not upon my dream as of yet."

"Sneaky and evil can be mutually exclusive," Erizhi says with a hint of a smile tugging at her lips. "Did you not see him in the inn last night? He had the look of one who was trying to avoid 'something'. Everyone else here is far too direct to be the magpie. Clearly it is Kaelyn."

Looking over at Lady Stephanie, Sir Rovach asks "Please refresh my memory, but do you have a guess as to what would make our noble swordswoman the "hound" of my dream? Her loyalty? "Are you suggesting that Stephanie can turn into a dog," she says with a chuckle. "Stephanie is the local, loyal companion who helps all the rest of the people. She is friendly to her people and a dangerous defender, at the same time. She appears to be the most simple of the group. Unadorned, unassuming. Sounds like a hound to me..."

Erizhi will wait a bit longer and then attach her mask and uncouple the mace from her belt.

Standing up she says, "I was trying to find out what you had discovered while scouting. Apparently that there are bodies has changed this mission altogether. The strangely-behaving bear suddenly transforms itself into the form of Aesa! Butternut jumps backwards a pace in alarm. "A--Aesa?" she queries, shock clearly written on her face. Before she can bring order to her thoughts, Aesa continues.

"Hang on there, Aesa," Butternut replies. "One of the bodies is not far away and not too close to one of the buildings," she says, pointing in the direction of the body lying about 20 yards from the storage shed. "Taking a few moments to investigate it on our way back could give us valuable information to share with the others. Frankly, otherwise, we don't really have much to tell them."

"That it looks like all of the Makkees are dead, or hovering on death's door hoping to be saved, isn't much to tell the others?" Aesa asks incredulously. "In theory we could just finish investigating the whole farm ourselves since we're right here and then tell the others all about it on the ride back to Dormare. I guess what we each think the term scouting means is obviously very different, but now is not the time for such discussions."

"If you believe you can get to the body unseen by any adversaries watching it to spring a trap then by all means do so," Aesa consents. "I will follow and offer healing, magical or otherwise, should the soul still reside in that body. Unless you can render such aid yourself."

Biting back an angry reply, Butternut rubs the bridge of her nose between her forefinger and thumb. "Okay, fine. How about you run back to fetch the others, while I examine the body and try to get some idea of what killed them. At least then, maybe we can be more prepared for whatever the danger is and thus possibly have a better chance of rescuing any others that still survive. Kaelyn can keep an eye on me, and if I'm dead when you return, at least he'll be able to tell you what killed me. Okay?"

"I believe you misunderstood me," Aesa replies. "I meant healing to the body you were going to examine. However if you feel that whomever it may be is already dead then I will head back for the others." As she starts to make her way back towards where the others wait, she turns and adds, "Don't think because we currently have differing opinions that I have any desire to see you dead. If you do run into trouble it would be my hope that Kaelyn helps instead of merely watching."

Aesa will make her way back to the others as hastily as travelling through unfamiliar territory allows. Once she arrives she will let the others know what has transpired and urge them to action, making sure to get Butternut and Kaelyn's mounts as well.
That which must be done will be done.

"I understood you fine, but it has been a day or more and there is little hope for those lying out here. You yourself mentioned the stench of death noted by... your other form. Our best hope is that some among the children yet survive." Butternut doesn't bother to reply to Aesa's emotional mewling; death no longer holds any terror for the halfling.

Once the pale woman has left, Butternut begins to slink toward the body she had indicated. She hopes to be able to at least identify the cause of death: teeth, claws, blade, bludgeon or something else.
