Eternal Vigilance #85 - "A Blast from the Past"
Third Faction:
The discussion on just who this third faction is, the one that orchestrated using VIPER to draw GENOCIDE out into the open, comes to a stall. Edgar begins working on backtracking through various means to see if he can track the GENOCIDE craft to its point of origin. Edgar notes that it might take several hours, if not all night.
The day comes to an end and the heroes make their way home. The rest of the night passes uneventfully.
Next morning, the group goes about their daily business as usual. It’s a workday, so many are off to work.
Checking your PDA’s will reveal Edgar’s progress on the GENOCIDE task over the night. He spent a few hours pouring over satellite imagery and did locate the craft in question. However, none of the satellites covered the crafts entire flight, but the information helped narrow down the search area.
Around the middle of the night, the first of the Starwatch Satellites went online. One of the satellites was close to the proper position to do what Edgar needed it to do. He had to wait a few hours for the Earth’s rotation to put it into the proper position.
A series of images follows, each growing smaller in scale as Edgar focuses in on the target. The first is Earth from a great distance and it quickly grows larger until it dominates the display screen. Next the images work their way through the atmosphere and cloud cover until it displays a mountainous region.
A wisp of smoke is noted and Edgar zooms in on that. The picture clears and you can see an aerial shot of what looks like a small installation high up in the mountains. It appears that an explosion of some sort took place there. Nothing appears to be moving in the picture.
Edgar notes that this place is approximately thirty miles due east of Ensenada, a Mexican town just south of Tijuana, which is just across the border. This destination does match the flight path that Edgar was tracking earlier.

New Business:
The morning news stations are abuzz about the latest of a story that has been brewing the last few days. At first contact was lost with a Mexican Cruise Liner, the MS Corona. The ship was returning from a trip to Alaska when all contact was lost. The Coast Guard has been searching for the ship with no success. The MS Corona was due to make port Acapulco last night, but never arrived. It was last seen making port here in San Diego, but then contact was lost shortly after setting sail.
Mid-morning, the PDA’s will flare with an emergency alert from Edgar.
“Warning! I am detecting a temporal surge at Ion Park! Something from another time is forcing its way into the present!”
Ion Park is well known to all the local heroes. It was place where the famous hero Captain Ion sacrificed himself to stop the detonation of a crude nuclear device some 17 years ago. Captain Ion was a sometimes partner of Goldstar back in the days before the Vigilant was formed. The Captain could absorb and then unleash radiation and had other fantastic powers. Captain Ion absorbed the energy of the nuclear blast, thus sparing San Diego, but was vaporized in the process.
Ion Park was built on that site to memorialize Captain Ion’s courage and sacrifice. The memorial has a state of the hero and other displays of his exploits as one of the first great heroes of San Diego.
Ion Park is in the middle of the downtown area, not far from the Starr Building.
Now what?

Flux
Since no answers would be forthcoming tonight Flux saw no reason to keep everyone up. The night was declared officially over.
On his way out, Flux is intercepted by Eldritch. He had concerns regarding the behavior of Backlash in the ADT building and passed them on. After hearing them, Flux was less than happy. More atypical actions by usually reliable people.
Morning dawns perfectly in the city once again. The routine of exercise/breakfast/jog and cab-to-work is welcome after the hectic pace yesterday. A quick check on the PDA shows that Edgar has been busy. The mountain-top location is deserving of a personal visit, perhaps after work.
Mid-morning the PDA does it's silent alarm trick, alerting Dave to take it out and look at it.
*Flux to all. Assemble all members at Ion Park. Expect temporal oddities. Possible park evac/barricade may be necessary.*
Dave walks out of the office area to an exterior wall and does his shifting of clothing, size and density so that it is Flux who exits the side of the Starr Building flight ready and aimed at the park.
My little inner voice, that area of hunches and intuitive leaps, is whispering to me. And it says . . .'maybe Captain Ion wasn't vaporized 17 years ago after all' . . .
Hope that's true. Good news is always welcome around here.

Stargirl
Stargirl:
The private elevator whisks her from the clinic to the penthouse sweet at the top of the Starr Building. During the ride she wills away her costume, becoming Gloria once more. Its not that late yet, at least for a teenager on summer vacation, so Gloria makes some phone calls and makes arrangements to meet her friends at the beach tomorrow.
Gloria doesn’t over sleep too much the following day. She grabs a quick bite to eat while packing for her day at the beach. That’s when that PDA thingee starts chirping.
Letting out a loud sigh, and hoping that this won’t take too long, Gloria changes into Stargirl and flies off towards Ion Park.
“’Kay, sounds good to me,” Stargirl says as she departs.Menagerie wrote:"As far as I know it is, Stargirl," Lily replies. "I'm planning to head home soon myself as there don't appear to be any pressing emergencies right now."

“Ion Park?” Gloria says, doing a double take. She remembers the place well enough. Mom used to take her there a lot when Gloria was a little girl, but it’s been years since the last visit.Edgar wrote:“Warning! I am detecting a temporal surge at Ion Park! Gloria groans upon hearing Flux’s message. Then the thought crosses her mind: was he talking about her? All does seem to indicate that, but then again she’s not officially, at least in her mind, a member of the Vigilant. Decisions, decisions. What to do?Flux wrote:*Flux to all. A Blast from the Past
Menagerie:
It's nice to get home at a time when she can still spend a little time with the kids before they go to bed. Of course, they missed her, so Lily spends most of her time focussing on them while they're still up: first Lance, then Rose after Lance goes to bed. Once Rose is off to bed, Lily does a few chores around the house, then spends a little time relaxing with Donny. A little quiet time relaxing in his arms does her a world of good. It has been a long and stressful day, and Lily is thankful to have a family to go home to.
The next day starts typically enough with getting the kids off to school and reporting to work at the Starr building. Having her "civilian" job here has made her extra-curricular activities significantly easier.
As she flies, Lily cannot help thinking about all of the times she has taken Rose - and more recently, Lance - to Ion Park to play. She's always considered it a reasonably safe place for the kids, but she's starting to wonder if anywhere can be considered safe anymore. There last experience with temporal oddities was anything but safe.

"On my way!" Lily replies. Lily then asks her assistant to reschedule her next couple of meetings. No way of knowing how long this will take, and it doesn't make sense to leave people waiting around to see her. Then, with a thought, she shift's into the form of Flux to pass intangibly up and out through the roof of the building. Once outside, she shifts to Goldstar's form and flies off toward the park at full speed.Flux wrote:*Flux to all. Assemble all members at Ion Park. Expect temporal oddities. Ion Park:
Warned by Edgar of a surge of temporal energy at Ion Park, several of the Vigilant have gone to investigate. Flux phases through the wall of the Starr Building and flies towards the park. Menagerie does the same trick, but then assumes Goldstar’s form as she exits. Stargirl flies off from the Penthouse Suite.
Ion Park is just a few blocks away. Seventeen years ago Captain Ion absorbed the energy of a crude nuclear device planted by the villain Grandmaster in an attempt to blackmail San Diego for a millions of dollars. The device was accidentally activated and fearing that there wasn’t enough time for Goldstar to fly it off into space, Captain Ion attempted to absorb the energy and radiation. The desperate plan worked, but nothing was left of Captain Ion.
In the months that followed, Ion Park was constructed by Starr Industries to honor the Captain’s valiant sacrifice. Since that it has become a popular attraction to both out of town visitors and the locals. There are three sections to the park: a large grassland area, a playground, and a memorial area featuring a life-sized statue of Captain Ion in marble.
Flux, Menagerie in the form of Goldstar, and Stargirl converge on the area. As the heroes approach, they see a glowing area start to form in the middle of the memorial region. Many of the civilians in the area are already starting to run away with their children. As is typical, the park is a busy place on this summer day.
The glow becomes more intense as the heroes land and cautiously move closer. Suddenly, there is a surge of energy that forces each of you to take a few steps backwards and a figure comes flying out of the glow.
“… DO THIS!” The figure cries out as he goes tumbling backwards. He hits the ground hard and tumbles a few times before rolling to a stop at Menageries feet.
It is a man clad in a blue body suit the symbol for nuclear energy on his chest. The man does look like Captain Ion from the pictures that you’ve all seen!
The man sighs and opens his eyes, seeing Menagerie in the form of Goldstar above him. He smiles and rises to his feet, seemingly oblivious to the new surroundings around him.
“I told you I could do this, Goldie. There’s no way I wouldn’t get you to the altar on time!”
With that, Captain Ion kisses a bewildered Menagerie on the lips!
Now what?

Ionic Disruption
Menagerie:
Approaching the sculpture of the Captain Ion, Menagerie notes a rapidly growing glow near the statue and immediately activates her Neutron power. As she closes in and lands, she searchs her memory for and idea of what form might best deal with such a situation. Certainly Goldstar is as likely as anyone to survive, but is there something she can do to shield others?
Before she can find a answer to her question, a figure flies out of the glow and tumbles to a stop at her feet. Immediately, Menagerie realizes that this man looks just like the sculpture. Can this be Captain Ion, alive? Whether the real Captain Ion or some kind of impostor, the man rises easily to his feet.
Taking half a step back, Menagerie attempts to explain. "It is wonderful to meet you, Captain Ion, but I am not who you think I am." Menagerie shifts to her own superheroine form. "I am Menagerie - a new member of The Vigilant - and this is Flux and Stargirl," she says, gesturing to her companions. "As you might guess from her appearance, Stargirl is Goldstar's daughter."
"I know this must all seem very strange to you, Captain, but I believe there are very reasonable explanations. Perhaps it would be best if we returned to the Starr Building and discussed this there? You'll be able to talk with the real Goldstar, who can probably explain this better than any of us."

The man's words clearly imply that this is the real Captain Ion. However, the sudden kiss catches her unprepared before she can reply. It takes Menagerie a moment to process that he is seeing Goldstar - as that is the form she has taken - rather than herself.Captain Ion wrote:“I told you I could do this, Goldie. Tesla:
Mid-morning, the PDA’s will flare with an emergency alert from Edgar.
“Warning! I am detecting a temporal surge at Ion Park! Something from another time is forcing its way into the present!”
*Flux to all. Assemble all members at Ion Park. Expect temporal oddities. Possible park evac/barricade may be necessary.*
So much for what might have been a normal day, Tesla thinks to herself, having planned to go visit her sister and then seeing if the military had any new needs for her as a test pilot or consultant. Instead she drives her motorcycle to headquarters and flies to Ion Park from there. Needless to say she's a little late as some of the others have already arrived.

Well that surely isn't what I expected to find, Tesla thinks to herself. Menagerie tries reasoning with what looks like Captain Ion. Tesla will remain wary and on guard just in case this is an elaborate trick while she waits for it all to get sorted out.

Stargirl:
Stargirl if off and quickly finds that she’s not alone in the sky! Flying close by is Goldstar!
“MOM!” Stargirl shouts as she tries to catch up. “When did you get back?”
Gloria quickly comes to realize that it’s not her mother, but rather Menagerie having copied her form.
“Sorry, I just wasn’t expecting that. I bet you get mistaken for other people all the time!”
We soon land and can see some kind of funky energy building. There’s a surge and someone comes tumbling out! He lands at Menagerie’s feet and looks just like the pictures she’s seen of Captain Ion! Before Stargirl can do anything, Ion is up and thinks he’s talking to the real Goldstar!
“Wow, I guess mom was more than partners with Captain Ion!” Stargirl says in amusement as the Captain makes the same mistake she did a few minutes earlier.
Menagerie changes forms and tries to explain things.
“I’m sure the real Goldstar picked up the same alert we got and should be here soon,” Stargirl adds.

Space:
Far out in space, work on transforming the Crimson Claw’s former ship continued into the late night. Starguard and the Scarlet Sabre had done their part and gone home leaving Goldstar alone on the ship. The Hand of the Guardian had completed its seeding run and all the Starwatch Satellites were in place and slowly being activated. Before catching some sleep, Goldstar noted that Edgar was already using one of the satellites to track something on Earth.
Sometime later that morning, Goldstar was awakened by an alarm from Edgar.
“Warning! I am detecting a temporal surge at Ion Park! Something from another time is forcing its way into the present!”
“Temporal surge?” Goldstar repeated half-awake. “Ion Park?”
It was a place that Goldstar knew all to well. After what happened there to Captain Ion, it was Goldstar in her civilian ID as Gwen Starr to buy the land and built the park and memorial. More times than she could remember, Goldstar took her baby daughter to visit Ion Park.
Focusing her thoughts, a single word came to Goldstar’s lips.
“IAN!”
Flying out of bed, Goldstar made her way to the airlock. Once out in space, she accelerated to faster than light speeds and made her way to Earth.

The energy surge that brought Captain Ion to 1986 fades away. Those listen will hear Edgar note over their PDA’s that the temporal surge has faded and is now gone. The Captain finds himself on the ground at the feet what looks like Goldstar. Thinking it her, Ion kisses her much to Menagerie’s surprise!
“Wha--??”
Captain Ion looks around for the first time and realizes that this is not the place that he remembers at all and that the people before him are strangers! There’s the woman who was Goldstar but now isn’t. There’s another woman with electricity arcing about her body. A teenage girl with blonde hair that’s introduced as Goldstar’s daughter and another man whom has remained silent thus far.
“This isn’t right,” Ion mutters. “Goldstar doesn’t have a daughter. I never heard of the Vigilant! This isn’t the last place I was at!”
Captain Ion turns, and starts to run away!

The Past:
As Goldstar flew through space, her mind wandered back to that day, seeming so long ago. To the last time she saw Captain Ion…
It was the year 1969, late in the summer of love. The Grandmaster had hatched a plot to blackmail San Diego and the numerous corporations that were based there with a crude nuclear device. The plan unraveled but the device had been inadvertently activated!
“I’ll fly it out into space!” Goldstar said, stepping towards the device. “It’ll explode harmlessly there.”
“There’s no time!” Captain Ion countered as he closely examined the bomb. “It’s too unstable. Just touching it could set it off! You’d never make it time.”
“What’s the alternative? We can’t have it explode here in Downtown San Diego?”
“I can sense that it’s close to starting the chain reaction,” Ion noted as he placed his hands around the device. “If I can absorb the energy as it’s unleashed, then there will be no explosion.”
“Ian, it’s too much energy!” Goldstar stated in a horrified voice. “You’ll never be able to contain it! It’ll kill you!”
A glow came to Ion’s hands as he worked to absorb the energy of the device. A noticeable glow came about Captain Ion as he drew more and more energy of the chain reaction into himself.
“Don’t worry your pretty little head, Goldie! There’s no way I’m going to let my bride-to-be get vaporized!” Captain Ion called out in a pained voice. “I CAN--!!”
And with those last words there was a tremendous burst of energy and Captain Ion was gone. He did absorb all the radiation. San Diego was spared, but not a trace of Captain Ion remained.
It took Goldstar many years to get over what happened that day. But like many old memories it grew less painful with each passing day and no longer dominated her thoughts. But not feelings and emotions from that day were surfacing once more. Could it really be Captain Ion returning?
“I CAN--!!”

The Present:
Captain Ion managed to run only a few steps when a loud sonic boom reaches everyone’s ears. Looking up you can see the real Goldstar flying in at high velocity. She slows and lands before Captain Ion.
“Ian!” Goldstar calls out, throwing her arms open. “It’s really you!”
“Goldie?” Captain Ion questions as he slows.
The two embrace with much familiarity and share a long, lingering kiss.
“You’re the genuine Goldstar,” Ion concludes as the rest of the Vigilant approaches. “No mistaking that. What is going on here?”
“My best guess is that the energy you absorbed from Grandmaster’s device opened a rift in space-time and propelled you into the future,” Goldstar explains.
“The future?” Ion repeats, trying to wrap his brain around the concept. “How far?”
“It’s July, 1986,” Goldstar answers. “Nearly seventeen years.”
“But it’s 1969… I was just there!”
“I know it’s a shock Ian,” Goldstar says in a soothing voice, “but its true. It’s also not the last shock in store for you.”
Goldstar gestures to Stargirl and has her approach.
“Ian, this is Gloria, Gloria, Ian. She’s our daughter.”
Now what?

Flux
It is him! No doubt of it. I remember him from way back, after my two tours in 'nam. Heh, I was 24 then, just a kid.
Menagerie gets a kiss from the happy, but confused Captain Ion and has to explain the mistake. Flux lets Menagerie do that without interference, waiting for that moment when the shock sets in and prepared to react on it.
Edgar alerts everyone via PDA that the temporal surge is over and Flux relaxes a bit. No Saurians, aliens, mages, or mad gods today, just an imminent happy reunion.
And there will be one: a hero of the city returned from death is great cause for celebration.

Now we see. Either he can take it or he falters . . .“No, this is some kind of trick!” Ion says, his mind failing to grasp what just happened to him. “I don’t know who you people are, but you can’t trick me!”
Captain Ion turns, and starts to run away, managing only a few steps when a loud sonic boom reaches everyone’s ears. Looking up you can see the real Goldstar flying in at high velocity. She slows and lands before Captain Ion.
"Captain Ion, please be assured this is not a trick. You've been presumed dead for seventeen years. This site is a memorial park in your name. My operating name is Flux. I lead the Vigilant of San Diego. I'm sure you will have many questions but here is not the best place to answer them. Please come with us to our HQ. We can do a better job of reacquainting you with the situation without the public uproar staying here will cause."“Ian!” Goldstar calls out, throwing her arms open. “It’s really you!”

Stargirl
Stargirl:
Captain Ion seems freaked out by Menagerie changing back to her real form from that of Goldstar. Gloria can’t say that she blames him that can be kind of creepy! He runs away, but the real Goldstar arrives on the scene and have the reunion that Ion thought he was having with Menagerie.
As Gloria watches, she can’t help but wonder why Mom never said much about knowing Captain Ion this well. Of course, Gloria never found out that her mother was Goldstar until a few days ago!
While Stargirl is lost in thought, Mom gestures for her to come closer.
“I guess that explains why we came here so much when I was a kid,” Gloria notes.
Taking a step closer, Gloria tentatively says, “Dad? Is that really you?”

Gloria does know the name Ian. From what she was told, it was her father’s name, Ian McDonald, but he died before Gloria was born. So it is with a stunned look on her face that Gloria hears that Ian and Captain Ion are one and the same! Her father was also a superhero!Goldstar wrote:“Ian, this is Gloria, Gloria, Ian. Backlash
While driving to the set, Lash PDA goes off causing him to jerk his motorcycle through a lane of traffic causing horns to blare in his wake.
Looking at the location he realizes its more then an hr away. “Guess I have to sit this one out.” He says to himself as he continues to head to work.

Mid-morning, the PDA’s will flare with an emergency alert from Edgar.

Post Continued:
Captain Ion has returned! The legendary hero who saved San Diego from a nuclear explosion nearly 17 years ago by absorbing the energy into himself. Everyone thought Ion had been vaporized, but instead he had been propelled into the future.
So it is a shocked Captain Ion who mistakes Menagerie for Goldstar, but the real Goldstar arrives and settles Ion's nerves. But that's not the only surprise in store for the Captain. Goldstar reveals that Captain Ion is Stargirl's father!
"I think you remember that part," Goldstar teases. "You were there after all. Seriously, I didn't find out that I was pregnant until over a month after what happened here. The following spring we had a baby girl."
With great familiarity Goldstar slips her arm underneath Captain Ion's shoulder and takes flight. The heroine flies back to the Starr Building and goes to the Clinic.
Dr. Williams is off this day, but Dr. Alexis Salier is on duty. She's stunned to find Captain Ion before her, but will pronounce him completely healthy after a quick examination.
Turning to the Vigilant, Goldstar will say, "Thank you all for your help in this matter, but we've got a lot to catch up on. As you might have guessed, Ion and myself were very close. We were engaged at the time he disappeared. He's got a lot to adjust too, including have a teenage daughter. You can go back to your usual business. We'll be in touch. Thanks."
