Elfquest #33

The orc horde has been defeated and the elves catch their breath in the aftermath of the battle. Valena heals the griffons and the cooshee’s of their wounds while Laucian tends to his own griffon.

Kylie searches the dead fire giant for valuables. She finds a small sack, small for the giant that is, tied about his waist. Once freeing it she finds wet gold coins inside mixed in with a few bloodstone gems.

Laucian examines the orc leaders and removes anything of value from them. He collects several hundred gold coins from them, a couple of potions, and some more bloodstones. Arrows can be replenished if so desired, but the rest of their gear is unremarkable. A couple of potions are liberated as well.

Mounting up, the elves ride the griffons to the nearby fort. Lilia and presumably Kylie fly there using their own magicks.

The fort is scouted from overhead first and it appears to be deserted. The main gates are wide open. You will note that trails lead away from the fort and into the mountains that surround the Sylvan Realms.

The elves land and begin to look around. The layout of the fort is similar to that of the one you visited earlier to the south. There are two main gates and both lead to an open area that splits the fort into two sides.

The northern side holds the wyvern stables and quarters for their human riders. No wyverns are found in the stables and the stables take up the majority of this area.

To the south and in the middle is fire giants’ large quarters. Scattered around the fire giants’ lair is the living areas for the orcs.

The cooshee’s catch the scent of something. They bark and then dash off in the direction of the orc quarters. Reaching a door, the elfin dogs jump up on it, trying to force their way in. There’s something behind this door!

The door is forced open, either with brute force or magic. Inside you find what appears to be a kitchen like area, a place where food is prepared. Huddled fearfully in one corner are half a dozen orc females.

GM Notes:

When closely examined, the giants’ sack will be found to contain 1250 gp, a ring, 10 bloodstone gems (typically 50 gp each), and the remains of a potion that broke when the giant fell.

The treasure from the orcs consists of 700 gp, 20 bloodstones, and two potions.

As Talen and Lia will know from personal experience that orc females have little place in orcish society. The males view them as little better than child bearers and tenders, along with other mundane domestic roles. The orcs are not armed with weapons, other than what you might find in a kitchen.

Now what?

Kylie:

Landing next to the fire giant, Kylie finds a sizable pouch strapped to the corpse's waist. Pulling it open, she finds it full of gold and gems. A small thrill trickles up her spine at this discovery and a smile spreads across her face.

"Looks like we're rich - again," she says to no one in particular.

While the others discuss her suggestion, Kylie finds her way to Dapple - or perhaps he finds his way to her - and she begins to absently scratch his ear as she listens. She is quickly growing attached to this animal and enjoys having him at her side.

Eventually they settle on a plan and head off toward the fort. She had made a promise, so she flies over alongside Talen. "You asked about my flying, and I promised to explain. This was my gift from Mother Tree. I have always wanted to be free to soar among the clouds with the birds. Now I can. Anytime I wish. What could be better than that?"

After a time, they arrive at the fort. From the air, it appears to be deserted. As they begin to explore, Kylie remembers the large sack in the other fort's fire giant's quarters and decides to explore within. If there is anything good left here, it is likely to be there.

Hearing some commotion, Kylie emerges and sees the cooshies trying to break into the orc quarters. The door is opened and they find a small group of orcish women huddled in a corner, shivering in fear. "Dapple? No." There is no need to attack these females as they present no threat.

Quickly losing interest, Kylie returns to searching the fire giant's quarters, taking Dapple with her. Perhaps his keen senses will uncover something she missed.

Lilia:

The fort looks deserted from overhead, so Lilia will gesture for the group to land. The trials leading into the mountains are noted. They are not a surprise, after all the orcs had to come from somewhere. They would need supplies and reinforcements, so there has to be a larger orc settlement somewhere in or under the mountains.

The fort seems deserted. No other wyverns are here, nor their riders. The cooshee’s catch the sent of something and are off in pursuit. Lilia trials along behind them, her bow ready for trouble. We soon find ourselves in what appears to be a kitchen where several orc women are huddled in fear.

Lilia sees the orcs and after a moment, lowers her bow. She then turns to her companions.

“This does complicate things considerably,” Lilia notes. “They are orcs, but I don’t think I could stomach killing a defenseless foe. Nor can they stay here and I’d assume keep their kind out of our homeland.”

“The choice we face is simply. We either let them flee and live, or we kill them in cold blood. I am not comfortable with either option. Suggestions?”

“Lia, Talen, I know that you had their kind in Hidden Valley. Your insight in this situation would be greatly appreciated.”

The fort is reached and all that’s found inside are some orc females.

“Obviously, there has to be some orc citadel or city where all these troops came from. Those paths we saw in the mountains probably leads to it eventually. We could let them go and then track them to this orc stronghold. The way I see it, the orcs will eventually realize that their forces were defeated and driven from the Realm. They know where we are. I feel better knowing where they are.”

Afterwards, Valena will continue to explore the fort for any other possible dangers.

Lia

Drawing her sword and pushing on the door to the building Lia finds orc females behind. For several long moments she looks at them as they do her as the others converse.

“The choice we face is simply. We either let them flee and live, or we kill them in cold blood. I am not comfortable with either option. Suggestions?”

“Lia, Talen, I know that you had their kind in Hidden Valley. Your insight in this situation would be greatly appreciated.”
Either by my magic

“If we free them they will surely be beaten or starve if they leave our lands. Killing them seems cold to me,” looking at the six huddled in the corner. “Midnight would take them in, of that I am sure. We could offer them a choice, If by some chance they accept to stay they can be put to work and earn our trust. Perhaps, those in the lost valley could come here…” she says off handishly.

Sheathing her sword and raising her hands to her side, Lia will ask in undercommon, “You need not be afraid. Whom among you speaks for you?
“The forces that left here have been defeated, The Giant and his hounds, now lay the crows feasting upon them. What do you wish us to do with you?”
The last thing you shall hear is the bladesong of my sword.

His bow taut and ready to fire the doors to a hovel like kitchen are soon pryed forth as his eyes penetrate the darkness, forms begin appearing. Soon he realizes 6 orc females are huddled in a corner.

“Killing an unarmed woman does not sit well with me. If they meant us harm they would have struck by now. Though I do agree with Valena.

Hearing Kylie’s mention of bringing these orcs across the rainbow bridge, Laucian shakes his head, “Most of our clans are not forgiving, nor will tolerate an orc with our realm."

“Laucian’s right, Kylie,” Lilia chimes in. “There is no love loss between elves and orcs. Indeed, if it was not for what we saw in Hidden Valley, I doubt that we’d even be having this conversation. There’s no way that we’re going to let orcs, any orcs, into the Sylvan Realm, let them reach the Mother Tree, and then use the Rainbow Path to reach the Elfholds. That’s just not an option.”

The Rainbow Path is not an option, nor is asking the aid of any other elf here. No one has seen Sherwood since the Mother Tree was restored. He might have departed for home for all we know.”

Lia’s attempt to speak to the orcs mystifies Lilia. As part of her growing up in Clan Grunalf and her training to fight orcs, Lilia knows their foul tongue. Whatever Lia is speaking, it isn’t orcish!

**

Lilia does speak orcish, but she wasn’t going to make that publicly known. This way she could monitor whatever conversation there was with the orcs to be sure just what was said.

Couple of minor notes and corrections here. Nightmist is Lia’s grandmother; Midnight is the Alphatian Avatar of Mystra.

Under normal circumstances, the Rainbow Bridge connects the Sylvan Realm to the Elfholds once a month. This may not have been mentioned in game before, but that’s how it works. The starting point in the Sylvan Realm is fixed at the Crystal Platform, but the end point appears randomly in the Elfholds. This made it hard for those elves that took the Rainbow Bridge to reach the Realms. They only managed to locate the bridge in time before it faded roughly once a year on average. Of course it was malfunctioning at this time too, so results may be different now.

Undercommon is a ‘common’ language of those who live in the Underdark. Orcs are not an Underdark race. Some orcs may understand Undercommon, but for the most part you’ll want to use Orcish when speaking to orcs. Given the status of orc females in among there own kind, they only speak orcish at best.

Laucian

Changed some things from above, realized I posted the wrong character kinda Lau knows little of the Hidden Valley

His bow taut and ready to fire the doors to a hovel like kitchen are soon pryed forth as his eyes penetrate the darkness, forms begin appearing. Soon he realizes 6 orc females are huddled in a corner.

“Killing an unarmed woman does not sit well with me, even if it is an Orc. Let them leave this place and never come back. If they do return, then let them perish on our blades and arrows.”

Hearing Kylie’s mention of bringing these orcs across the rainbow bridge, Laucian shakes his head, “Most of our clans are not forgiving, nor will tolerate an orc within our realm. Even considering such a notion sickens me to my soul. Why would you wish to save an orc?"

“Laucian’s right, Kylie,” Lilia chimes in. “There is no love loss between elves and orcs. Indeed, if it was not for what we saw in Hidden Valley, I doubt that we’d even be having this conversation. “Hidden Valley? My ears are playing tricks on me of that I am sure.” He looks around to the others, wondering what else they are keeping from him. “If you wish them saved so to die in the mountains or whatever hole they crawled out from, so be it.”

--Orcish, “Take whatever food and clothing you can carry. Be gone from here and dare not look back. Tell your Chieftain these are Morkroft’s lands no longer, his stain removed from the Sylvian realm, as it will be so with orckin, if they dare show their faces.”

Lilia Explians it all

Lilia:
Kylie wrote:Laucian speaks to the orcish women in a language Kylie doesn't recognise. "What did you say to them, Laucian?"
“He told them to gather what food and clothing that they could carry and leave,” Lilia explains. “Return to their home clans and warn the others that these lands are now defended.”

Lilia pauses a moment, as if to choose her words carefully.

“Kylie, you are of elfin blood, but you were primarily raised as a human. There is much that you don’t know about elves and their perpetual war with orcs. This conflict predates even the oldest of elves.”

“It is said that in the beginning, the gods sprang into existence whole. Among the first were Corellon Larethian who would become the father of the elves. Others included Moradin, the father of the little miners, Garl Glittergold of the gnomes, Yondalla, the mother of the halflings, and lastly Gruumsh, the spawn of the orcs. Each of these god would see to the creation of the lesser gods of their pantheons.”

“The powers did meet so as to divide the world into places where their children may live in peace. Corellon selected the forests, Moradin the mountains, Garl the hills, and Yondalla the fields. What was left was to be for Gruumsh, but that was not good enough for the spawn of the orcs. He wanted all the land and he would take it through violence.”

“Thus did the god war begin. The battles between Gruumsh and Corellon were legendary. The final battle raged for days with both combatants bloodied and battered. Corellon gained the advantage by slicing out one of Gruumsh’s eyes, and those he became known as Gruumsh One Eye to the orcs.”

“The final battle took place under a huge and ancient oak. High above, in the form of the moon, was Sehanine Moonbow. She wept as she watched the battle unfold and her tears fell, landing on the leaves of the ancient oak. The magic of the tears gave life and sentence to that ancient tree and she became the Great Grandmother Tree, the first of the Mother Trees.”

“Sehanine’s tears mixed with the leaves of the Great Grandmother tree and together they fell to the ground. There, they merged with the blood of Corellon and the first elves rose up fully formed. Seeing this and knowing that he was at a disadvantage, Gruumsh fled and eventually created his own warrior race called the orcs.”

“Thus all elves are born of the blood of Corellon and the tears of Sehanine combined with the essence of Great Grand Mother Tree. It is because of this union that elves are so long lived and are fondest for the forests and our reverence to the Mother Trees. We were born of conflict against the orcs and so it has continued to this day. Orcs are an enemy you cannot reason with. They hate all other races, but the elves especially for what Corellon did to Gruumsh. I fear that there will be no peace until there are no more orcs.”

“As you can see, there would be no place for orcs in the Sylvan Realm, as no elf would allow such a thing. This is probably the best solution for all.”

Lilia has no problem with the orcs taking what they can carry and leaving. Once they are gone and once the rest of the fort is searched, she’ll gather what oil she can so as to burn the fort down.

"Agreed," Nariya says. She could cut them down herself, knowing even an Orc female to not be completely defenseless. Even in a male dominant society, the women can fight if pressed or defending young. It would seem they are allowed to go to act as messengers of sorts. While not her first option it makes sense to Nariya so she says nothing further.

Instead Nariya will keep a watch until the orc women vanish from sight and then help explore the fort if there is anything left to do.

Post Continued:

The orc women grab what food and clothing that they can and rush from the fort. They soon are lost from sight as they flee north into the mountains.

The elves turn their attention back to the fort. No other surprises are found. No extra treasure is found in the fire giants’ quarters, but some letters are found written in large text on the cured leather hide of some animal.

No one here understands the language, but Kylie, Lia, and Talen can make out a few words here and there thanks to their thievery talents. The gist of what can be learned is that the fire giants have a major stronghold in the mountains to the south of the Sylvan Realm in a place called the Hellfurances.

A search of the human wyvern riders’ quarters will turn up some other information. Again, the language they use isn’t known to the elves, but some of it can be pieced together. These riders hail from a place that translates as Ravensclaw in a land called Sunderland. Ravensclaw seems to be on the other side of the mountains to the west of the Sylvan Realm. That would mean that’s part of Vassa, the land ruled by the dreaded Witch-King Zhengyi. Some minor treasure and trinkets are found among the belongings of the humans.

In the quarters of the orc leader, some letters are located. Laucian can read Orcish and thus can translate. Most of the correspondence is of the mundane variety. Troop rotations, a timetable for supplies to arrive and so on. Whatever you might think of orcs, they are an organized race. You’ll learn that the orcs dwell in a huge citadel called Xorg, and that Xorg lies north of the Sylvan Realm.

From what you can gather, most of Xorg is underground. This isn’t much of a surprise, as the Sylvan Realm is far to the north. The Mother Tree provides comfortable conditions within the Sylvan Realm, but venture too far outside the realm and normal weather conditions take over. Thus Xorg would be placed in what could be considered near artic conditions.

With the explorations complete, the elves use the supplies on hand, lamp oil, poor quality liquor, to spread the fire they start. Within ten minutes the entire fort is en gulfed in flames.

It is night by now, as the days are short this time of year.

GM Notes:

Set up camp for the night or continue on home? It would take the griffons about two hours to fly you to Golden Peak at the top of the Mother Tree.

You’ll find 180 gp among the human’s gear inside the fort.

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Lilia:

Lilia silently watches as the orc weapon grab what they can and leave. One less thing to worry about.

The exploration of the fort continues and some interesting information is gleamed. The fire giant seems to be part of a larger tribe in the mountains to the south some placed called the Hellfurances.

“These Hellfurances must be a volcanic region,” Lilia reasons. “A place stifling hot to any but a fire giant. At some point we’ll need to determine of these giants are a threat to the Sylvan Realm or not.”

A name for the orc stronghold is located. Xorg. What a strange name. It’s in the mountains to the north and most likely covered by snow and ice. If not for the weather warping ability of the Mother Tree, the Sylvan Realm would be covered in ice and snow.

Lastly, the humans here, the wyvern riders, hailed from a place called Ravensclaw in land called Sunderland. This appears to be to the west and in the land of Vassa, a place that Sherwood described to us a long time ago.

“This information does make me wonder if Vassa is somehow involved in all of this. Their troops were here, along with orcs and fire giants. Someone had to be powerful enough to forge this alliance, and the Witch-King fits the bill. Perhaps Moorkroft worked for him, before he went crazy?”

It’s late by the time the fort is fully aflame. We have the choice now to either rest here or push on.

“I for one think we should ride the griffons back to the Mother Tree. Sleeping in a real bed has its appeal right now.”
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Laucian

“To get out, and never come back.” He says looking at the half elf. “They have no place here.” He says simply stowing his bow in his quiver as Lilia explains our history.

“if this were the case, when was their last contact? Also within the orc writings there was a time table of supplies, if the next shipment is close, it should be dealt with as well.”

“I for one think we should ride the griffons back to the Mother Tree. Sleeping in a real bed has its appeal right now.”

“I would tend to agree, our bonfire will be seen for miles by friend and foe alike. If by some chance, one of the other groups failed the orcs will send out scouts to investigate.” He says looking at the others. “I would suggest flying either home or some distance then set up camp.”

"We should definitely leave here," Nariya agrees. "I wouldn't want to camp in such filth even if there was no threat."

Post Continued:

The threat of the orcs from northern most fort has been deal with and the fort burned to the ground. Their work done, the elves mount up on the griffons and begin the long ride back to Golden Peak, the griffon stable at the top of the Mother Tree.

It is nearly midnight by the time you reach Golden Peak. During the trip you could make out four more forts burning far off in the distance. That accounts for five of the eleven forts surrounding the Sylvan Realm. The forts burning are located to the east of your current position.

The area is mostly deserted as the griffons come in for a landing. A few cooshee’s are about and beds for everyone are found.

Next morning, there are more elves about as some of the other elven groups returned during the night. Kylie’s mother, Allurien Feador is among them. Reports on how the elves faired trickle in. There are now eight forts burning, leaving only the three to the south so far untouched.

It seems that many orcs did reach the Elvin forest before they could be intercepted. This is especially true of the southern forts that were the furthest away from the Mother Tree and were much closer to the forest. Those elfin bands have had to go into the forest itself to track down the orcs.

Some of the elves here depart to help in the orc hunt, while others remain at Golden Peak.

River Blossom, Valena’s unicorn companion, returns as she says that she alerted the centaurs to the danger.

As the morning progresses Lilia finds herself being at the center of attention. It seems that word of her numerous encounters with the Father of All Elves has spread and they all want to see and hear the words of one who has been so blessed.

There is some talk of what to do next. A leader for the Sylvan Realms will eventually be needed to make the important decisions, but just how to pick such a person has yet to be decided. This might only be a temporary position, as no one really ever gave serious thought on what would happen once the Mother Tree was restored.

Most assume that more and more elves will return and that some kind of leadership structure will be needed. Traditionally, each clan has a Clan Leader and this Clan Leader has a seat on the Clan Council. One of the Clan leaders is named as head of the Clan Council.

Each Elfin forest has a King or a Queen, but this is not a hereditary title. Instead, the Elfin Council selects the King or Queen. They rule for as long as they wish and they will alert the council when they wish to step down. In the Elfholds, the Elfin King primarily deals with elfin interests outside the elfin forest, not with the actually ruling inside the forest. However, in times of war the King or Queen can take over to deal with the current crisis, giving the elfin people a single leader.

By mid-morning you’ll be come aware of Sherwood being about. He used the magic amulet given to him in the Elfholds to take on elfin form to make it easier for him to mingle.

“It seems that you’ve got the situation well in hand here,” Sherwood notes. “I’ve retrieved the barge and will be starting the journey back home to Cynalon with it. It just wanted to say goodbye and good luck to all of you who are staying here, and to let those of you coming with me that we’re going to be going.”

GM Notes:

Anyone going with Sherwood?

If you want to join up in the orc hunt, feel free to do so. These orcs will have reached the forest and would not be subject to aerial attacks like the orcs to north were. The general feeling is that the adventuring bands would have rode the rocs to the southern edge of the forest and would have been chasing after the orcs who were moving to the north. Those going now would travel south from the Mother Tree in hopes of catching the orcs in-between them and the other elves to the south.

There will be a few inquiries about the status of the Order of the Golden Griffons and the Silver Maidens, mainly if Laucian and Valena are restoring these orders and looking for new recruits.

Now what?

Nariya:

Many forts burn but there is still work to be done. Nariya hears that orcs move through the forest and they must be dealt with. She will volunteer to lead a group into the forest to hunt down as many of them as she can. Before she leaves though, she spots Sherwood approaching in his elfin disguise.

"It was good to travel again with you Sherwood," Nariya says, embracing him lightly. "There is much to do here and so I will be staying. I am sure our paths will meet again."

If any of the others want to join her, Nariya will gladly have them along. Otherwise she will depart, telling those staying she will see them later and saying her goodbyes to any who choose to leave with Sherwood.

Lilia the Leader?

Post by Lilia »

Lilia:
Laucian wrote:“If this were the case, when was their last contact? Also within the orc writings there was a time table of supplies, if the next shipment is close, it should be dealt with as well.”
“That remains a mystery to be solved,” Lilia answers. “I think we can safely say that the orcs we sent back will alert the others to the change here. I doubt we’ll see any supply caravans coming from the orcs, at least for now. Once things are more settled we’ll have to regularly patrol the region to make sure.”

It is decided to fly back to the Mother Tree for the night. The day has been a long and gruelling one and Lilia is very ready for sleep. But as part of her elfin heritage, Lilia doesn’t need a lot of sleep to feel refreshed. After just a few hours of rest she’s recharged.

For the first time she’ll say her morning prayers and in the process gain priestly spells. It is a new experience, but not an unpleasant one. Afterwards she’ll study her mage spells to replace them as well.

After a small breakfast, Lilia goes out to see what has happened overnight. Along the way she runs into Lady and gets reacquainted with her cooshee companion. It seems that some of the other elves have returned during the middle of the night. Their success seems mixed. Some of the forts were much further from the Mother Tree than the one they attacked yesterday and these forts also closer to the edge of the forest as well. Thus many orcs made it into the forest with elves in pursuit.

While she will not be joining those going on the orc hunt, she’ll wish them success.

“The very nature of the forest will limit the orcs to the main roads and trails,” Lilia notes. “The underbrush is to great a barrier for any non-elf to negociate. Stick the main paths and you’ll eventually come across the enemy.”
As the morning progresses Lilia finds herself being at the center of attention. It seems that word of her numerous encounters with the Father of All Elves has spread and they all want to see and hear the words of one who has been so blessed.
Much to her surprise, Lilia seems have become a popular figure. Her encounters with the Father of All Elves seem to be known to all. Lilia is happy to speak about her experiences to those who ask. She’s unaccustomed to such public speaking, but takes to it rather well.

Later on, she’ll turn her attention to other issues. Leaders for those here will have to be selected. A task such as restoring the Sylvan Realm will need guidance. It seems reasonable to assume a leadership structure much like exists in the Elfholds, as everyone will be familiar and comfortable with it.

The first order of business would be to select a spokesman for Clan Grunalf. The only others of her clan present that Lilia knows of would be Laucian and the scout Dorotha, who was the leader of one of the other groups. Neither one strikes Lilia as the type to take charge as they would both rather be out in the field.

“If no one objects, I feel I should speak for clan,” Lilia states. “I have the feeling that both of you (Laucian and Dorotha) would rather be out in the field hunting orcs than dealing with such issues. I feel that I’m, at the moment, better qualified for the job.”

Assuming that there is no objection, Lilia will then speak to the others and see who will speak for their clans and how to proceed next in general. Obviously, the defeating the orc menace is the first order of business and securing our borders. Regular patrols, both aerial and ground based, would be needed. Then we focus on restoring relations with the other races who live in the Sylvan Realm, such as the centaurs and brownies. Reclaiming the clan holds and the elfin palace would follow. So much yet to do.

After a time, Lilia notes Sherwood among us.
Sherwood wrote:“It seems that you’ve got the situation well in hand here,” Sherwood notes. “I’ve retrieved the barge and will be starting the journey back home to Cynalon with it. It just wanted to say goodbye and good luck to all of you who are staying here, and to let those of you coming with me that we’re going to be going.”
“I will be remaining here,” Lilia will say. “There is so much yet to be done and I want to be a part of it. Thank you for everything you’ve shown me. You are always welcome in our lands, Sherwood Elf-Friend.”

While spending most of her day in conversation, Lilia will try to keep abreast of what is transpiring with the orcs. Should any get too close to the Mother Tree, she will then rush to defend her.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Talen:

Talen is up before the dawn after having returned to the Mother Tree. One part of his elfin heritage is only need a few hours of sleep to be recharged. As he studies his spells for the day, the words elfin heritage keeps going through his head. Finally Talen makes a decision, one that would honor his elfin heritage in a way similar to what Lia has done. His just won’t be as drastic.

Making his way to the Mother Tree, Talen will touch the bark and mentally make his request. A warm feeling tells Talen that his wish was granted, but there is no physical change in the lad. He looks the same as before.

“Thank you, grandmother,” he’ll mouth before walking off.
“I’ll be staying too,” Talen says. “At least for now. This is a wonderful opportunity to explore my elfin heritage further. At some point I would like to do the same with my human side, so I will return to Cynalon some day. Until then Uncle, save travels.”

Word reaches Talen’s ears that orcs have penetrated the forest and are no doubt marching towards the Mother Tree. Many elves are rushing off to join them. Gathering his gear, Talen goes to join them.
Lilia wrote:“The very nature of the forest will limit the orcs to the main roads and trails,” Lilia notes. “The underbrush is to great a barrier for any non-elf to negotiate. Stick the main paths and you’ll eventually come across the enemy.”
“You almost make it sound like it was designed that way,” Talen wryly notes. “I’ll keep it in mind.”

Talen will quickly say goodbye to his companions remaining behind and rushes to keep up with Nariya.

Valena of the Silver Maidens

Post by Valena Feador »

Valena:

After resting, Valena rises, says her prayers, and does her daily bow maintenance. In the fading darkness, Valena can see that many of the orc forts are burning but not all of them. She can’t help but wonder if some of the orcs reached the forest already.

That concern is realized and many present are departing to continue the fight. Valena will join them after she takes care of a few other things first.
“I will be staying”, Valena states. “The Realm needs defending and I have a lost order to restore. I am needed here.”
River Blossom, Valena's unicorn companion, returns as she says that she alerted the centaurs to the danger.
“That you for your service, River Blossom”, Valena states. “But there is more battles to come. We’ll be riding to engage those orcs who reached the forest.”

Some of the other elf maidens question Valena about joining the Order of the Silver Maidens.

“I don’t know much of the details myself at the moment. Once I do, I will let you know what the qualifications or tests needed are for the order. I fully do want to restore the Silver Maidens.”

After replenishing her arrows, Valena and River Blossom are off on the orc hunt.

Retaking the Realms

Post by Kylie »

Kylie:

Kylie is very quiet during the search and burning of the fort. She chooses to fly back to Mother Tree under her own power, arriving somewhat later than the others. She is disappointed to not see her mother, so she sleeps and then studies her spells while waiting for her mother's return.

Once her mother does return, Kylie will greet her somberly and ask to talk privately with her. Once alone, she begins, "Mom, I find myself wondering if I really belong here. It came about on our mission that we found ourselves with some terrified orc women. They posed no threat whatsoever, and yet some of our band wanted to slay them just for being orcs. I was informed that the orcish god fought the elven god eons ago, and as a result, elves are committed to the genocide of the orcish race. While I am certainly aware that most orcs pose some threat to other races, and have slain plenty myself, I cannot support genocide as a policy. If this really is what being an elf is about, then perhaps I have more reason than I knew to be glad of the human part of my heritage.

"One thing I learned when we visited the hidden valley and met Talen and Lia is that at least some members of any race can learn to live in peace with others. In my mind, slaying others simply for an accident of birth is wrong and I'm not comfortable with the idea that I'm surrounded here by those who feel otherwise. I'm not sure I can continue to work with those I have fought alongside for so long. I don't know where all of them stand on this issue, but at least some of them see things very differently than I. Perhaps it is time for me to go my own way.

"I just don't know..."

Later that morning, Kylie and Allurien encounter Sherwood. "Hi, Sherwood. This is my mom, Allurien Feador. Mom, this is Sherwood, whom I've spoken to you about. He's largely responsible for my becoming skilled in the mystic arts."
"Thank you, but I think I'll be staying for the time being. However, you may see me again before you know it. Good luck to you and please take care of yourself." Kylie will give Sherwood a big hug before he leaves.

“Kylie,” Allurien softly says, “the elves are not committed to genocide against the orcs, at least not any more than humans and dwarves are. There is a strong dislike between our races due to our gods, but you’ll never find the elves forming an army and going forth to lay waste to all orcs in the world. That’s just not in our nature. Yes, we will protect and defend what is ours, but otherwise elves are far to independent to organize for any great lengths of time.”

“It seems to me that you already answered your own question. If we were truly a bloodthirsty race, as you fear, then those female orcs would have been killed on the spot. They were not. There is the capacity for compassion among us. Given that this was during the heat of battle, it just shows great self restraint.”

“Corellon Larethian is the father of our race. It is true that he is also our god of war and of warriors. But that only tells part of the story. He is our god of elfin magic, of music, of arts and crafts, and of poets, poetry, and bards. Does that sound like someone dedicated to a policy of genocide?”

“To an outsider, elves can seem like a complicate race, but we’re really not. We will band and organize to fight to protect our lands and our children. We will not raise an army to lay waste to every orc in the world. Were such a thing our goal, then there would be no orcs left to trouble us today. We will raise an army and go forth to counter the efforts of an enemy army that threatens us.”

“In short, most elves react to the world around then. If left alone, then we wouldn’t even have armies or soldiers. Ask any elf and they’ll tell you that they’d rather spend a day laying in the grass, smelling fresh flowers, being with their loved ones, drinking Feywine and dancing and singing the day away.”

“If anyone has a policy of genocide, then it’s the orcs. They would lay waste to all other races, burning their cities and enslave their people. They are an evil that has to be fought. They just happen to hate elves more than any other race.”

“While it might seem that we are eager for battle right now, we’re really not. We’re defending our lands and the Mother Tree. Once this danger has passed, things will return more to normal and you’ll see the elves for what they really are. A highly individualized race with many and varied interests. A race with a deep respect for nature and all the good creatures that they share their home with. A people with skilled craftsman and writers of some of the greatest poetry in the world.”

“As for now, I imagine that there will be regular patrols to find and identify any potential threats, but we won’t organize and march on them anytime soon. Only when and if they become a real threat. As elves, we can unit and focus upon a single crisis. But as that crisis is dealt with, our own individual interests will weaken our unity. At least until we are forced to unify again for the next crisis. That is the way of the elves.”

“I am told that we are nearing the winter solstice. Soon we will celebrate Yeartide, a time of quiet meditation to mark the end of the death that autumn brings. It is a somber time, but one that brings great hope as it means spring will come soon and life will return to the forest. It seems to me that mirrors our current situation. It is a somber time for all that has been lost, but it is a time of renewal and hope as well for what has been gained. The Sylvan Realms have been restored once more and the Mother Tree lives.”
Kylie wrote:Later that morning, Kylie and Allurien encounter Sherwood. "Hi, Sherwood. This is my mom, Allurien Feador. Mom, this is Sherwood, whom I've spoken to you about. He's largely responsible for my becoming skilled in the mystic arts."
“A pleasure to meet you Sherwood,” Allurien will say. “Kylie has told me much about you. You have my thanks and my gratitude for all that you’ve done for my daughter.”

The one called Lilia seems to be working towards forming a new Clan Council for the Sylvan Realms. While Allurien’s heart really isn’t in dealing with politics right now, she supposes that it is something that is needed.

“I suppose I could accept that role for Clan Feador,” Allurien will say. “I probably have the highest ranking of any new arrivals here among my clan. Traditionally, the High Keeper of the Tree has a seat on the council as well, with his focus being on the wants and needs of the Mother Tree. The speaker of Clan Feador then concerns themselves more with the clan.”

What Lilia proposes is logical to Allurien’s mind. No doubt that a Clan Leader will have to be selected, along with a King or Queen of the forest. Allurien has no interest in either position. She imagines that her time will be filled with restoring the Clan town here in the Sylvan Realms and getting to know her adult daughter without adding more responsibilities.

Laucian

Returning from the burning orc fort, Laucian can make out some fires in the distance, though not knowing of their kin success. Once back at the stables, Laucian will make sure the griffon’s stable is suitable, once it is he will turn in for the night.

Awaking early by Onyx’s purring Laucian will pray to Ehlonna for her guidance. After a small breakfast, he heads to the gathering seeing Lilia has become the center of attention. Soon he learns of the orcs within their boundaries and the need for the council to be reborn.
“If no one objects, I feel I should speak for clan,” Lilia states. “I have the feeling that both of you (Laucian and Dorotha) would rather be out in the field hunting orcs than dealing with such issues. I feel that I’m, at the moment, better qualified for the job.”

“I never was one for politics, Lilia. Nor do I think a member of the Order of Griffon should reside on the council. The position is yours.”

Walking forward, Laucian will over his hand in friendship to Sherwood, “It is not goodbye, Sherwood Elf friend. Merely a parting of ways, we will surely meet again.” He says to the ranger mage. “You will always be welcome at my fire, please send my best to the others.”

There will be a few inquiries about the status of the Order of the Golden Griffons and the Silver Maidens, mainly if Laucian and Valena are restoring these orders and looking for new recruits.

“While I am unsure of the details, I will let you know of the requirements and or tests for the Order when I do. Reestablishing the Order of the Golden Griffon is one of my priorities.”
For a moment Laucian gathers up more arrows then rushes to catch up with the orc hunting party.

Lia

Growing frustrated of the orcs not understanding her, Lia moves off as Laucian handles it. If she is going to be staying here, perhaps learning orcish would help her greatly.

It is then decided to fly back to the Mother tree. Once there Lia quickly prays to Eilistrae then goes to sleep. Upon waking she hears of orcs running freely in their forests, an offense that cannot go unchallenged.

As Lia makes her way to join the orc hunt, Lia spots Sherwood among them, she will run up and hug him. “Your leaving?” clearly sadden. “I will stay here, at least for the present time. I will pray for your safe return.”

Lilia the Leader?

Post by Lilia »

Lilia:

As Lilia steps away from Sherwood, she remembers something that she’s been meaning to tell him concerning flying on the barge. Turning back and leaning forward, she whispers the words into his ears.

“That should make your trip home a bit more pleasant,” Lilia says with a smile.

Laucian wrote:“I never was one for politics, Lilia. Nor do I think a member of the Order of Griffon should reside on the council. The position is yours.”
“Thank you, Laucian. I hadn’t considered your allegiance with the Golden Griffons being a possible issue, but your words make a great deal of sense. Good hunting.”
Allurien wrote:“I suppose I could accept that role for Clan Feador,” Allurien will say. “I probably have the highest ranking of any new arrivals here among my clan. Traditionally, the High Keeper of the Tree has a seat on the council as well, with his focus being on the wants and needs of the Mother Tree. The speaker of Clan Feador then concerns themselves more with the clan.”
“I was not aware of the High Keepers role on the council,” Lilia admits. “But then again I didn’t think much of politics before and paid little attention to them. Plus the High Keeper would be the ninth member of the council, thus eliminating any ties. It makes sense.”

Sensing that Allurien doesn’t really want to get into this right now, Lilia will excuse herself. No doubt the sorceress wishes to spend more time with her daughter than grapple with politics.

Lilia wrote:As Lilia steps away from Sherwood, she remembers something that she’s been meaning to tell him concerning flying on the barge. Turning back and leaning forward, she whispers the words into his ears.

“That should make your trip home a bit more pleasant,” Lilia says with a smile.
“I wish you had figured that out before we spent a week flying here,” Sherwood answers after hear what Lilia deduced. “But as you said, I will now be home sooner. Best of luck here.”
Talen wrote:“I’ll be staying too,” Talen says. “At least for now. This is a wonderful opportunity to explore my elfin heritage further. At some point I would like to do the same with my human side, so I will return to Cynalon some day. Until then Uncle, save travels.”
“Until that day then, Talen,” Sherwood answers, shaking the lads hand. “You know where to find us.”
Valena wrote:“I will be staying”, Valena states. “The Realm needs defending and I have a lost order to restore. I am needed here.”
“Good luck on your mission, Valena.”
Kylie wrote:"Thank you, but I think I'll be staying for the time being. However, you may see me again before you know it. Good luck to you and please take care of yourself." Kylie will give Sherwood a big hug before he leaves.
Sherwood returns the hug to Kylie. Much like Lilia, she’s grown so much since the day they first met.

“Don’t worry about me,” Sherwood says. “I always seem to manage to get by. Here, I’ve got something for you.”

Sherwood fishes through his pockets and pulls out a collection of pages crudely bound together. It’s a series of very realistic pictures, some of which Kylie will recognize.

“These are pictures of teleport arrival locations. There’s one for Jallarzi’s Estate, another for Karn’s keep, and more. Once you’re able to cast Teleport, you’ll be able to visit anytime you wish.”
Allurien wrote:“A pleasure to meet you Sherwood,” Allurien will say. “Kylie has told me much about you. You have my thanks and my gratitude for all that you’ve done for my daughter.”
“It was our pleasure, ma’am. I’m just happy that she was able to find you again. You’ll find her to be full of surprises.”
Laucian wrote:Walking forward, Laucian will offer his hand in friendship to Sherwood, “It is not goodbye, Sherwood Elf friend. Merely a parting of ways, we will surely meet again.” He says to the ranger mage. “You will always be welcome at my fire, please send my best to the others.”
“Sounds good me,” Sherwood agrees. “Until that day, be well.”
Lia wrote:As Lia makes her way to join the orc hunt, Lia spots Sherwood among them; she will run up and hug him. “Your leaving?” clearly sadden. “I will stay here, at least for the present time. I will pray for your safe return.”
“Yes, there is much turmoil back home in Cynalon and that is where I need to be. Is there any messages you wish to pass along to Nightmist?”

Having said his goodbyes, Sherwood will board the barge. He’ll command it to rise up high into to sky like Lilia suggest and is soon gone from sight.

Good luck to you all!
I do what is necessary.

Retaking the Realms

Kylie:

Kylie listens as her mother speaks. There is much wisdom in her words, yet also does it not mesh entirely with her own experience. "Much of what you say is no doubt true, and it may be that some elves are more given to vindictiveness and rash actions than others. What did happen was not - as you thought - in the heat of battle, but long afterwards as we searched the otherwise-empty fort. Also, I do not believe that they would have survived had I not been there to speak up in their defense. In fact, I was told in no uncertain terms that they needed a reason not to slaughter these defenseless women. As far as I can tell, it was only my pushing for other solutions that led them to eventually find a reason.

"They may or may not be typical of most elves, but there is certainly much hatred lurking in the hearts of at least some of my companions. This worries me greatly, and I find myself uncertain what to do."

Kylie's curiosity grows quickly as Sherwood digs about for whatever it is that he wishes to give to her. It turns out to be some worn and wrinkled pages. Many ideas flit through her mind at the sight - spells, notes, a diary - but it turns out to be something she didn't even conceive of.

"Wow, Sherwood! I hadn't really considered that I might be able to cast a spell that powerful anytime soon, but I guess I will get there eventually. When I do, these will be incredibly helpful. Thank you so very much, uncle. I would never have gotten where I am without you, and you continue to help me along. That is incredibly generous of you and I appreciate it very much." In truth, a few of these places - such as Jallarzi's Estate - are so well known to her that she likely could get there without the help of the picture, but most are not. It is quite a boon for the future.

Kylie eyes Sherwood speculatively, not entirely certain of the intent of his last remark to her mother...

Kylie will continue to spend as much time as possible with her mother over the next few days. If a situation arises that needs her skills, then she will deal with it as it comes. Otherwise she will attempt to learn more about the other elves that have come here, the different clans, and this land known as the Sylvan Realm.
