Hammerfall #15

The dwarves have reached Rockhaven, a minor suburb of Hammerfall. They arrived to witness a clash between hobgoblins and derro, another variety of Underdark dwarf. The hobgoblins barely won and the dwarves quickly took care of them.

Scouting revealed something suspicious near by. Three trolls wearing gold collars were spotted. They just stood there, not leaving their posts. There was no way that they couldn’t have been aware of the battle transpiring close by.

The group decides that someone or thing is controlling the trolls and that they are acting as guards for something in the apartment building they are standing in front off. Other ground entrances were sealed off, leaving only the way guarded by the trolls as the only main entry. It is decided to eliminate the trolls, as they are a menace anyway and to see what they are guarding.

The dwarves move as close as they dare as they prepare to engage the trolls. The plan is to use magic and ranged attacks to take them out.

Grondar starts the festivities by dropping a Flame Strike on top of two of the three trolls. One of the trolls drops from the suddenly column of flame, while the other just barely survives. The flames are loud and bright, helping illuminate the whole area for a time.

Oran throws his namesake Firehammer and his aim is true. The troll is hurtled backwards, but gets back up after the strike.

These opening attacks are followed up by whatever ranged attacks remain among the group as they advance closer. Virae fires two arrows from her shortbow, but neither strikes one of the surviving trolls.

Daraden embeds his throwing axe in the chest of the troll Oran hit earlier and this time it stays down.

Farian fires his crossbow and drives a bolt into the leg of the remaining troll. The troll uncharacteristically turns and starts to move towards the entry to the apartment instead of attacking. Senoia rushes forward and realizing that she won’t reach the troll before it opens the door, throws her warhammer towards it. The hammer strikes the troll in the back, forcing it hard into the door. The troll them crumbles silently to the top of the steps.

The dwarves are quickly on the scene and Oran uses his Firehammer to permanently deal with the trolls. Thus far no threats or even any noise have come from behind the apartment door. Surely, the battle had to have been heard. The Flame Strike was accompanied by a loud roar that should have attracted the attention anyone close by.

When the Hammer Falls

Grondar:

With the skills of Farian and Virae to guide them, the group moves close to the trolls without being spotted. When all are ready, Grondar calls on the power of his patron to bring a roaring pillar of flame down on two of the beasts. One survives, but is clearly badly hurt. At almost the same time, Oran's hammer slams into the third, severely wounding it. Immediately, the others commence their own attacks. Arrows, bolts and thown weapons combine to finish off the creatures. Moving closer, Oran uses the mystic FireHammer to destroy what's left of the bodies.

Not wanting to remain exposed any longer than neccessary, Grondar calls out softly. "Great job! Let's fall back!" His goal is to retreat to just out of sight of the building, then prepare for the second phase of the attack. He'll leave Daraden where he can peek around the corner to watch for any activity from the building as the others get ready.
__________________________________________________________
I'm trying to keep this generic as we haven't finallized a strategy yet. Daraden was chosen for watch as he's on the ground team in either plan.

Oran:

Oran throws his Firehammer and it strikes true, but as he feared it wasn’t enough to put the vile creature down. Fortunately, the others in the group are able to finish the job. Oran dashes forward, catching his Firehammer in the process. Using the weapon, he finishes the job of removing the trolls.

Grondar orders us back, and Oran follows.

“We should just continue forward,” the warrior suggests. “If they weren’t ready to receive guests, then they will be by the time we make our move.”

Senoia:

Lacking any significant ranged attacks, Senoia just runs forward when the spells and hammers start flying. As she gets closer, she can see only one troll left and the cowardly bugger is fleeing!

“Oh no you don’t!” Senoia says as she throws one of her hammers. Her aim is true and the critter goes down in a heap. Oran finishes the job with his flaming hammer.

Grondar then calls for a retreat!

“But… But…,” Senoia sputters, “We’re here! You can’t stop a dwarven juggernaut when it gets moving! Plow forward and overwhelm whatever lies before us!”

“The trolls should be dealt with before we have to deal with them again.” He says firmly as one of the trolls was not set asunder.

Upon hearing the call for a retreat Farian, begins to follow the others back but then activates his ring. He will walk inside and have a look around.

‘I got to work on that.’ She says to herself as she moves forward.

But then a call for retreat comes… Following Grondar, Virae will await and see what happens.

"I hafta agree with dah others on this one," Daraden says. "IF there's even anyone inside dey were probably relying on the trolls tah keep anyone out. Why give 'em a chance to fortify?"

If it's still what Grondar wants to do, Daraden will grumble but be diligent in the task set forth for him. He will make sure Darkfang stays alert for lurkers or anyone moving unseen no matter what is decided.

Grondar listens to what the others are saying, his mouth hanging agape in wonderment. He can hardly believe his ears.

"Didn't we just spend time a few minutes ago discussing our strategy? Am I imagining it? We get a little blood on our weapons and you all are ready to toss our strategy and tactics aside for a mindless bullrush against a probably-fortified position?

"Growing up in Rockhome and serving as chaplain in the guard there, I was always told that dwarven military success was largely built on dwarven discipline. I've gotta say, I've seen halfling troops with more discipline."

Suddenly, Grondar realizes something is wrong. Looking about, it quickly becomes apparent what it is. "Wait. Where in Berronar's name is Farian? Does anybody have any idea where he's gone?"

If Grondar sounds flabbergasted, it's probably because I was reading the responses from everyone. Why bother to plan tactics if they're going to be thrown out the second the fighting starts?

With the guard trolls removed, the dwarves withdraw to a safe distance to finalize their attack plans. While doing so, it is realized that Farian is not among them!

Back at the battle site, Farian used his Ring of Invisibility once more to conceal himself. Then he opens the front door and goes inside.

The main hallway stretches towards the back of the apartment building. There is a door on either side of the hallway. There is a large intersection at the end of the hallway. There the hallway ends with stairs going up and two smaller hallways branching off to the left and right. These smaller hallways lead off in the general direction of the side entrances noted earlier.

The corridors are not empty! A trio of large mushroom shaped growths is also present. They range from 4-7 feet in height and have small almost tentacle-like growths coming from their main trunks. It is possible to get around these strange growths should Farian so desire.

After withdrawing and seeing the response to the attack, Oran suggests that they implement the previously discussed strategy with an odd result.
Grondar wrote:"Didn't we just spend time a few minutes ago discussing our strategy? Am I imagining it? We get a little blood on our weapons and you all are ready to toss our strategy and tactics aside for a mindless bulrush against a probably-fortified position?”
“I didn’t forget anything nor did I suggest simply attacking without any strategy, Oran calmly states. “I merely suggested that we implement what we had discussed now instead of waiting any longer and giving our adversaries more time to prepare.”
Grondar wrote:Suddenly, Grondar realizes something is wrong. Looking about, it quickly becomes apparent what it is. "Wait. Where in Berronar's name is Farian? Does anybody have any idea where he's gone?"
“I haven’t seem him,” Oran reports. “But he could be invisible.”

--

OOC: Grondar did say in his post before last that the attack plan had not been finalized. Given what transpired, Oran thought it prudent to carry out what had been discussed previously now instead of waiting longer. I guess I wasn’t clear on that point. He was not suggesting just storming the place.

After it appears that Farian is missing, Dougan adds, “It seems that our hand may be forced. As I see it, we have two choices. Wait and hope he returns or initiate our attack now. What shall it be, Lord Grondar?

"As I've been trying to say since the moment we got out of sight, we should proceed with the plan." Grondar turns to Virae. "Virae, please take your team - Oran and Dougan, here - up to the roof as we discussed earlier. I'll lead the others that haven't disappeared in through the front, which at this point leaves me with Senoia, Daraden and Darkfang. Once you see us enter, then start your own entry."

That's an exact quote from Oran in Hammerfall #14 in the italics, by the way.

Grondar called for the team to pull back to lure out other foes as discussed, and in the very next post, Oran says, "We should just continue forward". Sure, I could have just started the next phase of the plan in that same post, but I needed to see what if anything was going to happen (i.e., by the opposition) before doing so. Perhaps Oran knew what was going to happen, being an NPC, but I sure didn't. And yes, neither Virae nor Farian ever responded to whether they felt like proceeding inside on their own as proposed by Oran, so I assumed we'd go with Grondar's plan.

I'm not sure what Dougan means by, "After listening for a long time..." It has just been one round of posts, and the GM post really only addressed Farian's actions. I can only assume that since nothing has been mentioned of new opponents appearing that they haven't.

“I understand the plan as it was proposed,” Oran calmly states. “However, one must also learn to adapt ones strategy as a battle unfolds.”

“These are the facts as I see them. We are now several minutes removed from our attack on the trolls. The plan was contingent on there being more trolls inside and that our actions would lure them out. That has not happened as of yet.”

“I can think of two reasons why not. One is that they were not prepared for or expecting trouble. By implementing the plan now, we’ll either encounter the enemy outside as you suggest on an even battlefield. Or we’ll catch them still preparing inside and again, we’ll be on an even battlefield where neither side has a significant advantage.”

“The other option is that they are not coming out, regardless of just how prepared they are. Therefore, we’ll still have to go in and be at a disadvantage. Tactically speaking it is always best to strike when you may have an advantage or a least a level battlefield. The worse case is that we’ll be at a disadvantage and will not be able to change that fact.”

Oran is ready to depart when Virae is.

Oran didn’t know what was going to happen next, and his strategy is based on the information on hand without any insider knowledge. It’s been a minimum of three rounds since the initial attack, that’s three minutes and no sign of enemy activity as of yet. In his mind, if they were going to come out, they would have already.

Grondar wanted suggestions, as posted earlier. In the post right before Oran’s which started all of this, Grondar specifically stated that the plan had NOT be finalized. Oran offers his opinion, and in fact it was written as a suggestion. Grondar responds by calling him a warmonging halfling.

What Oran is guilty of is being too vague in his initial post. His comments were supposed to be taken after having moved off and were already out of sight, not while running back. He just suggesting starting the plan that had been already discussed, not a blind charge. And yes, he’s assumed it was Grondar’s plan too.

Dougan hadn’t posted in nearly a month, so he has been quiet and listening for a long time now, in terms of posting that is.

That was incredibly dangerous and foolhardy, Farian. Even invisibility cannot protect you from everything. Please don't run off like that again," Grondar finishes with a heavy sigh.

"Alright, let's get ready to head inside - as a group, this time." Grondar pauses to see whether Virae is having any success with her assignment. If she is, he'll proceed with the rest of the group to the front of the building. If not, he'll revise the plan to be just one group, then proceed. Grondar will have his crossbow at the ready when they enter the building.

Virae tries to pick up Oran and Dougan and can only barely lift them.

Farian’s description of the mushroom-like fungus inside the building will sound familiar to most dwarves. What he describes sounds very much like Shriekers and/or Violet Fungus. The former make a hellish noise when one gets too close to them, while the latter can lash out with their tentacles and are known to feed upon rotting meat.

Shriekers and Violet Fungi do resemble each other and it’s not unusual to find both in the same area.

GM Notes:

Both Oran and Dougan are heavier than Virae’s Maximum Press value. She can just barely lift them as it is. Flying with them is out of the question.

I wasn’t aware that Shriekers were listed as a Common critter in the Monster Manual. Given that, most dwarves with any underground experience would recognize them on sight, including Farian. Virae, having grown up in the Underdark would know of them too.

Movement within ten paces of the Shriekers can set them off. Likewise a light source within thirty paces will do so as well. Strangely enough, they didn’t react to Farian during his scouting trip.

Daraden Stormbeard:

Daraden doesn't comment on the discussion between Grondar and the others. Used to operating away from a group, the discussion of plans and tactics seems to take up valuable time. It is a neccessity, but since he has nothing to add on his decision, commenting further would only bog things down more.

It seems they will be going inside after some changing of the plans. Daraden gives Darkfang a few insturctions and then readies his own weapons for when they finally do enter. Not entirely sure if they will be facing Shriekers or Violet Fungi, he will wait until the front rank either dispatches them or requires help.

Grondar:

Though he hadn't really expected Virae to carry them both in one trip, it is clear that she will not be able to fly with the burden of another person in her arms. Thus, they opt to proceed in through the front door as a group.

Not far in, they encounter a group of giant mushrooms, just as Farian had said. From the looks of them, it is apparent that the group consists of some combination of Shriekers and Violet Fungi. Grondar pauses for just a moment to come up with a plan.

"Okay," he says softly, trying not to alert the fungi. "Let me cast a spell to silence these buggers, then we'll hit them with a barrage of ranged attacks. After that, we can finish them off at close range, starting at the front edge and working our way back. Ready?"

As soon as the others acknowledge his plan, Grondar casts Silence 15' Radius centered on the middle of the group of 'shrooms.
________________________________________________________
So, 1st Round: Grondar with spell, then the others with ranged attacks. (If Dougan says he has the same spell, Grondar will let Dougan cast the spell and he'll use his Crossbow of Speed in the first round instead.)
2nd Round: Move in for the kill. Fair enough?

Post Continued:

Once past the troll guards, the dwarves have discovered Shriekers and/or Violet Fungus inside the dwarven apartment building. Grondar puts forth a plan of action and the group moves to carry it out.

Dougan casts Silence 15’ Radius in the middle of the three large fungus growths, enveloping them all. Grondar fires his Crossbow of Speed and embeds a pair of bolts in one of the fungus. Daraden tosses is throwing axe into the same one and between the two attacks kills it.

Oran takes out another with his Firehammer, while Farian, Virae, and Senoia makes sure the last fungus is disposed off with bolts, arrows, and a thrown war hammer.

The attack goes off quietly and efficiently. Considering that the fungus’ tentacles didn’t move about, these were probably all Shriekers.

The dwarves move forward to the hallway junction and are enveloped by the silence. Each level of the apartment building is the same. There is the main entry where the trolls stood guard. There are two side hallways that each lead to smaller side entrances. Down one of these smaller hallways are a series of smaller, one person apartments, while larger apartments of various sizes occupy the rest of this floor. Each floor the building is the same, except for the outside entrances of course.

The dust and debris is rather thick on the floor and it’s easy to tell that the majority of tracks lead into the basement of the apartment building. A few lead up the stairs, but none are recent. The tracks belong to trolls, which comes as no surprise.

Mixed among the troll tracks are other tracks. It’s impossible to tell just what made these tracks, but they belong to someone or something that is human size meaning that something around six feet tall made these tracks.

There is no light or noise coming from the basement of the apartment building. The smell of trolls lingers in the air.

Now what?

Grondar can but shake his head; it seems this is one dwarf who won't be happy until he gets himself killed. There are none so blind as those who will not see... "We work together as a team for a reason, Farian. However, I accept that I cannot keep you from getting yourself killed if that is your wish."
Grondar wrote:“I rely on agility, speed and stealth. Not brute strength.”
What this has to do with her not speaking up during their earlier planning session totally escapes Grondar, so he lets it go.

Inside, they encounter three giant mushrooms. The creatures are eliminated quickly and quietly.

From the junction, they can see down all of the hallways on this floor, but the Silence spell prevents them from speaking. Grondar gestures for the others to join him in one of the hallways.

"Let's clear this floor, then check the basement since most of the tracks appear to go that direction. Also, I suspect that may be where the trolls are lodging, and I'd like to make sure they're all eliminated. After that, we'll check the upper floors. Okay?"

"Oran, please take Virae and Dougan to check the rooms on this hallway," Grondar says, indicating the hallway leading to the smaller rooms. "We'll take the other hall."

Oran:

Oran nods his understanding. Stealth isn’t his thing, so he’ll let Virae lead the way. Should trouble arise, Oran will be there with his hammer.

Senoia:

Senoia retrieves her warhammer after throwing it at the mighty and menacing mushroom. What a deadly threat for a for a dwarven warrior to face!

Perhaps there’ll be something more interesting in one of these side rooms…

Virae

Seeing that Oran wishes her to go first, Virae will slip her short swords into her hands and move slowly forward and check out her tunnel.

Post Continued:

The dwarves move to explore the ground level of the apartment complex. Very little has disturbed the dust and debris from the passing decades since this building had regular tenants. Most of the doors are closed, but a few stand ajar. No one and nothing seems to be in them. The apartments show signs of having been searched and ransacked in the distant past. Nothing valuable remains.

As you make your way back to the stairs, Darkfang will begin to growl lowly. From the way he’s acting, something is coming up the stairs from down below!

GM Notes:

The silence spell that covered the area by the stairs has since expired.

Now what?

When the Hammer Falls

Post by Grondar »

Grondar:

The ground floor has clearly been scavenged by others already, leaving nothing for the dwarves to find. Soon, they meet back in the main intersection of the hall.

Grondar is about to say something when Darkfang begins to growl. The wolf is clearly facing the stairs to the basement, indicating that the threat is coming from that direction. Grondar gestures for the group to gather around.

"Okay," he whispers, "as soon as whatever has alarmed Daraden's friend steps onto the floor, I want all of our warriors to charge forward and engage. The rest of us will provide ranged support. That should limit them to coming up the stairs one at a time and make them easy pickings. Ready? Go."

Readying his crossbow, Grondar prepares to assault whatever emerges from the stairs.

Dougan:

Dougan nods his understanding. He’ll move back a bit to allow the warriors passage and those with range weapons to be in position. For now Dougan will stand in support and will see how the situation unfolds before getting involved.
