Eternal Vigilance #83 - "Agents of Genocide”

Roll Call: Blackout, Lavender, & Powershift

On the roof of the ADT Building, Blackout and Lavender have just arrived. However, the festivities have gotten started without them! A GENOCIDE transport had sat down and operatives disembarked. Leading the way were a unit of Pawns, followed by the Black Queen and her bishop, the Purifier.

All of the villain’s attention is focused on Powershift. The Vigilant powerhouse is flying towards the GENOCIDE forces. The pawns open fire, but most just miss the fast moving target. The Black Queen aims her huge gun and fires! The blast hits Powershift, sending him careening of course.

Blackout throws his rod at the Black Queen and it’s line wraps about her upper body pinning her arms to her side. She still maintains hold on her oversized gun. The Black Queen struggles to break the line, but it continues to hold her fast.

“You’ll pay for this indignation!” The Black Queen curses.

Lavender reaches out and teleports the Purifier. All of the sudden, he reappears where Powershift had been! The Purifier appears right in the Pawns line of fire and he takes a few hits before ducking to safety.

While that is going on, Blackout picks up a noise in the background that wasn’t there before. The noise coming from the GENOCIDE transport has changed. It’s taking off, leaving the Black Queen and her operatives behind!

Roll Call: Backlash & Eldrich

Down inside the ADT Building, Backlash and Eldrich have met up with Chimera and her female Furies. The situation is tense at first, but seems to have calmed down.
Backlash wrote:“It was a Viper airship, all are dead, but something or someone got out alive.”
“VIPER?” Chimera repeats. “Here? How peculiar.”
Backlash wrote:“It is the greater of the evils at the moment.” He says back evenly, “The rest of The Vigilant, should be here shortly.” He says knowing how full of a lie it is, but then would they take it at face value?

“If we come across the Viper agent on the way, we will have to take him or her out quickly and then move on to the Genocide Lab. Is that agreeable?
“It is agreeable,” Chimera answers. “Let us keep moving. Dr. Photon, if you would lead the way?”

Led by Dr. Photon, the group makes its way to the basement of the ADT Building. Electra has the idea of following the power distribution system to see if it leads to something concealed down here. A lone conduit is spotted and it leads towards the boiler room.

Suddenly, a section of wall silently slides open. Standing there is what at first glance appears to be a man in silver armor with purple and yellow trim. What appears to be a machine gun is part of the right forearm of the armor.

What does attract your attention is the man's face-- the right half is all mechanical and the left side human with dark brown skin. His right eye appears to be a telescopic lens. You quickly conclude that the man isn't wearing armor; instead he's a cyborg of some kind!

“Scanning,” the cyborg says in a half-human half-mechanical voice. “Multiple mutant targets detected. Entering extermination mode.”

The cyborg flicks his left arm and a segmented blade snaps out. Brandishing the weapon, the cyborg advances on the Vigilant and the Furies.

“I’d say we found the secret base!” Chimera states. “Time to tear this place apart! Furies attack!”

Roll Call: Frostbite, Goldstar, Stargirl, Menagerie, Flux, Tesla, Starguard, and the Scarlet Sabre

Out in space the rest of the Vigilant are grappling with the Crimson Claw! Somehow he’s been drawn back to his ship and he brought the gateway Borealis had become with him!

Battle ensued. The Children of Azog began to flood the chamber, but the heroes destroyed them as fast as they arrived. Edgar then took over this task by using the weaponry within the ship itself. A stalemate has been achieved. The Children are destroyed as fast as they appear.

Menagerie in the form of Quasar unleashed his light burst attack, but inadvertently blinded almost everyone in the area. However, the Crimson Claw is proving to be a far more dangerous threat. He’s shrugged off attacks to him and hurt Flux in his retaliation.

At Golstar’s suggestion those who are blinded and can fly slowly rise up higher in the chamber to avoid the Claw’s attacks. Tesla and Frostbit amp up their defenses too.

Scarlet reaches the claw first and slashes at him with her Sabre. However his alien skin simply causes the attack to bounce harmlessly off. The Claw goes to strike Scarlet, when Menagerie/Quasar hits him with an energy blast. The attack draws the Claw away from Scarlet and she tumbles to safety.

“You cannot hurt me, mortal parasite!” The Claw rages. “My kind has always been your superior!”

“Oh shut up!” Starguard retorts. Energy leaps from the gauntlets of his armor and it surrounds the Claw. “This will keep you under control.”

“You should have done that sooner, luv,” Scarlet teases as she goes to assist Flux. “Would have saved us all a lot of trouble.”

With ridiculous ease, the Claw flexes and shreds the energy holding him.

“Nothing can control me! Least of all a pathetic human!”

“If at first you don’t succeed…” Starguard mutters as he re-entangles the Claw.

The energy is shredded a second time, but the act buys the others time. The vision of Frostbite, Flux, Goldstar, and Stargirl returns!

“The odds just got better,” Scarlet says. “We’ll beat the claw yet!”

Hearing the words fly around him Frosty’s vision finally returns as the dots before his eyes disappear. Seeing the others dealing with the Crimson Claw, Frosty will attempt to entangle the alien in ice.

Not waiting for the others backlash will go to engage the Cyborg, hoping his healing factor keeps him from harms reach of that blade.

Menagerie:

Menagerie's light blast manages to distract the Claw from its attack on Scarlet Sabre, but nothing more. This alien is incredibly tough!
Crimson Claw wrote:“You cannot hurt me, mortal parasite!” The Claw rages. “My kind has always been your superior!”
"We managed to put you down once; we'll do it again." Menagerie glances around at the others. "Does anyone remember how they beat this monster last time?"

Just as Menagerie is about to unleash the light blast again, she notes that the others appear to be regaining their sight. "Goldstar! Tag-team, okay?" she calls, slapping her hands together in front of her and changing her form to that of her ancient team leader, then immediately shifting to full neutron mode.

Menagerie flies into position, preparing a full-speed move-through on the Claw, hopefully timed to hit at the same time as Goldstar. Hopefully they can crush this bug between them.

“You’ll pay for this indignation!” The Black Queen curses.
"Certainly, but not right this moment," Blackout replies calmly, knowing full well his adversary is not completely harmless despite the bonds.
While that is going on, Blackout picks up a noise in the background that wasn’t there before. The noise coming from the GENOCIDE transport has changed. It’s taking off, leaving the Black Queen and her operatives behind!
"Looks like you have someone smart in your crew after all," Blackout comments, refering to the pilot who is seemingly leaving while the opportunity presents itself. Confident that Lavender can handle herself, Blackout will move up to disarm the Black Queen before she can break free.

Goldstar:

The light fades from Goldstar’s eyes and she can see once more. It seems that Flux has been hurt, but isn’t down. The Claw remains the primary threat. Goldstar considers just how to fight him when Menagerie has an idea.

Unless someone moves to attack her, Lavender will relocate one of the armed men so that he is shooting back at the others.

Roll Call: Blackout, Lavender, & Powershift

On the roof the ADT building, the struggle between the heroes and the Agents of GENOCIDE continue. Blackout has wrapped up the Black Queen in his throwing line. The cyborg tries to escape, but hasn’t as of yet. In the background, the GENOCIDE transport takes off and flies away. The Black Queen seems genuinely surprised by this.

“That’s not possible!” she hisses. “There’s no one on board!”

Before the Black Queen can say anything else, Powershift surges back on to the seen. Mystical energy is crackling about his body, giving it a disturbingly reddish glow. Powershift slams hard into the Black Queen and she goes flying backwards.

All of the sudden, the slack in Blackout’s throwing line is drawn taunt and he’s hurtled forward along with the Black Queen. Reacting quickly, Blackout let’s go of his line, tumbles in midair, and lands on the balls of his feet.

Looking back towards his foe, Blackout just catches the sight of the Black Queen going over the edge of the building, while Powershift flies off seemingly unconcerned.

Roll Call: Backlash and Frostbite

Down in the basement of the ADT Building, Backlash, Eldrich, and the Furies have come across yet another cyborg. This one is more advanced than the Black Queen and has far more obvious mechanical parts.

Backlash rushes forward to engage the enemy, but members of the Furies are faster.

“Eat hot photons!” Dr. Photon cries out as her energy gauntlets are fired.

The energy blast strikes the cyborg square in the chest and actually passes through it! The cyborg titters for a moment and then falls over on the floor, spilling a mixture of blood and mechanical fluids.

“Hey, I wanted a piece of that action!” Hardbody complains to Dr. Photon.

“An impressive display,” Chimera purrs. “But I wouldn’t worry just yet, Hardbody. I think you are about to get your wish.”

As if on cue, more figures shamble into sight from behind the first cyborg. There are five more cyborgs four are men and the last is a woman. All are similarly armed and ready to engage in battle.

“As I was saying,” Chimera continues, “let us take down these GENOCIDE thugs!”

Roll Call: Frostbite, Goldstar, Stargirl, Menagerie, Flux, Tesla, Starguard, and the Scarlet Sabre

Out in space, inside the orbit of Mercury, the rest of the Vigilant are locked in combat with the Crimson Claw! The blinding light that Menagerie inadvertently unleashed begins to fade for most present. Only Tesla remains affected and she’s brought up her electrical force field for protection.

The Claw shreds Starguard’s latest attempt to bind him when Frostbite slides up and completely coats the Claw with ice.

“Thanks,” Starguard states, “but I doubt that’ll hold him for long.”

Menagerie, in the form of Quasar, decides to change her tactics.
Menagerie wrote:Just as Menagerie is about to unleash the light blast again, she notes that the others appear to be regaining their sight. "Goldstar! Goldstar wrote:“Its worth a shot,” Goldstar calls out. She’ll fly off and circle back around to gain momentum. As she flies along, Goldstar shifts into Neutron Star mode, altering her density to its full potential.
“Scatter!” Starguard tells Frostbite and Scarlet upon seeing what the two are attempting to do.

The two Goldstar’s circle the Arena, gaining speed and density as they fly along. They streak towards the ice covered Crimson Claw, but already that ice is being to show signs of cracking.

The twin Goldstar’s collide into the Crimson Claw, destroying the icy sheath covering him! Surprisingly, none of the participants in this spectacular collision go flying off. Instead the two Goldstar’s feel like they just slammed into a brick wall and groggily crumble to the floor.

Incredibly, the Claw remains standing, having shrugged off a pair of attacks that would have been fatal to most individuals!

“Ignorant humans,” the Claw mutters. Reaching down the Claw grabs one of the Goldstar’s by the head and then slams her down hard to the deck of the ship creating a large impression. “Is that the best you can do?”

“Ah, crud!” The Scarlet Sabre uttered in disbelief. “Maybe we should blow the hatch and suck this thing out into space?”

Showdown in Space

Flux

Now that hurt. I haven't had a hit like that since the Monster cut my shins up. You can't see straight, the team is blinded too, suck it up and think!

Flux phases out of solidity to wait out the blindness. If the Claw wants another swipe let him take it on empty air.

The sounds of the battle are not encouraging. While the demons can't get a foothold inside the base, the flow is not stopping. By the sounds of it the Claw is not much bothered by any of the attacks so far.

Separating the Claw from Borealis didn't work. Maybe separating Borealis from the Eye of Azog is the way to go . .

When his sight returns Flux sees the attack by Goldstar and Menagerie fail most disastrously.

Not good. That was better than any hit I could have given and he didn't even look annoyed by it. Time to revise plans.

*Edgar patch me in to everyone please.*

*Flux to all. I'm going to make a grab for the Claw. At full size and strength I might be able to hold on to him. That leaves you all free to blast away on him and buys time to work up another plan. Stargirl, get your Mother and Menagerie out of the line of fire. If this does not work, consider ways to throw the Claw back through the Borealis Gate and close it up after him.*

Flux is already giant-sized but insubstantial. He moves quickly toward the Claw, reacquiring full density and applies the choke hold. If nothing else it might at least shut him up!

Eldrich Arcane

Eldrich follows Backlash and the women on their trek through the building seeking a 'Genocide lab'.
These women concern me. The one radiates magic. The others considerable anger. Against men for some reason. 'Furies'. Odd choice of name. I must ask what it means here at some point.

Eldrich's musings are cut short by the appearance of the thing a being partly of flesh and partly a construct and hostile in the extreme!

Backlash begins a move to engage but the Furies react faster-and more violently!
“Eat hot photons!” Dr. Photon cries out as her energy gauntlets are fired.

The energy blast strikes the cyborg square in the chest and actually passes through it! The cyborg totters for a moment and then falls over on the floor, spilling a mixture of blood and mechanical fluids.
While the Furies bicker over their failure to share in the violence five more living machines come forth seeking to inflict death.
“As I was saying,” Chimera continues, “let us take down these GENOCIDE thugs!”

Eldrich will target the furthest ( female ) cyborg with an Arcane Bolt, expecting that the Furies might prefer not to kill a woman . . .

Stargirl:

Suddenly, there are two Goldstar’s and Stargirl can’t be sure which is which. She realizes that one has to be Menagerie, but they are identical. The two fly around and then do a kamikaze dive on the Crimson Claw! And they just bounce off!

“MOM!” Stargirl cries out upon seeing her seemingly take the worse of the collision.

Big and ugly then grabs one of the two Goldstar’s and slams her into the deck of the floor. Stargirl starts to move forward. She had to do something, but is unsure of what.

“Right, I’m on it!”

Amping up her strength, Stargirl flies in low and will grab both Goldstar’s and carry them off.

Menagerie:

Goldstar agrees to the tactic, and the two of them take off. They each loop around and fly in from opposite directions, bearing down on the Crimson Claw at full speed. The alien doesn't appear to see them coming - or doesn't care - allowing them both to slam into him simultaneously!

For Menagerie, it's like hitting a brick wall at 200 miles per hour. The impact shatters her awareness; Menagerie slumps to the ground, maintaining only the slimmest grasp on consciousness.

The next thing Lily is aware of is a feeling of being scooped up and moved at a rapid pace. "Hu-nh? Wha-?" she murmurs groggily, shaking her head in an attempt to clear the spiderwebs that seem to fuddle her thinking.

"Lavender," he calls out a moment later, "let's change dancing partners. Can you redirect queenie there to not go splat on the pavement?" As he says this, he hurls his throwing rod at the Purifier to get his attention.

Roll Call: Blackout and Lavender

The struggle with the Agents of Genocide on the roof of the ADT Building continues. Powershift surged back onto the scene and barreled into the Black Queen, sending her flying off of the roof! Blackout was dragged along in the process, but just released his throwing line to prevent him from going over the side of the building.

Seeming unconcerned by this, Powershift flew away.
Blackout wrote:"Lavender," he calls out a moment later, "let's change dancing partners. Can you redirect queenie there to not go splat on the pavement?" As he says this, he hurls his throwing rod at the Purifier to get his attention.
“I’ll do what I can!” Lavender shouts out as she rushes towards the edge of the building. “I just have to see my target!”

Without looking at the Purifier’s direction, Blackout hurtles his reserve rod towards the unsuspecting villain. It catches the rogue in the side of the head and the Purifier goes down in a daze.

Behind the Purifier, the regular troops are turning and starting to take aim on Blackout!

Lavender reaches the edge of the building and peers down the side. She lets out a startled gasp and then says; “I don’t think we have to worry about her going splat any time soon!”

As the Black Queen started to fall, her right arm, the cyborg one, reached out back towards the building. It stretched out away from her body and grabbed the edge of the building! Using that handhold, the cyborg arm is now retracting, bringing the Black Queen back towards the roof!

Roll Call: Backlash and Eldrich

Underneath the ADT Building, the two heroes have joined with the all female Furies in quest of a hidden GENOCIDE Laboratory. The entrance to the secret lab has been found and a group of half-human, half-machine cyborgs are there to greet them! These cyborgs are to be the Knights of GENOCIDE. Dr. Photon blows one away with her energy gauntlets, but there are more cyborgs present!

Eldrich throws an Arcane Bolt at the lone female cyborg. The bolt hits and the female is sent backwards about ten feet.

“Typical abusive male!” Chimera cries out in shock from Eldrich’s actions. Chimera concentrates and unleashes a mental bolt towards the lead cyborg. It strikes the machine man, but doesn’t affect him greatly. “These things are shielded against mental powers!”

“Then let me light him up!” Electra calls out. Electricity generates about her body and then is unleashed into the same cyborg Chimera mind blasted. The electricity makes his body go rigid and start to smoke. The cyborg comes to a complete stop.

Hardbody and Backlash move together, covering the short distance between them and the enemy. The muscular black woman winds up and unloads on the mind blasted and electrically fried cyborg! He’s sent rocketing backwards, taking several other cyborgs with him. They all go down in a pile and the lead cyborg is down for the count.

Backlash rushes the cyborg next to the one that Furies attacked. He punches this one, but the cyborg takes it pretty well. He’s not stunned, nor does he go flying backwards!

“Told ya I was stronger, shrimp!” Hardbody taunts.

From the back of the group, Blaise Morgan fires a magical bolt of energy. It strikes the cyborg Backlash hit, but also doesn’t do much damage. Eldrich can sense that Blaise’s magical bolt wasn’t as powerful as his.

The cyborg raises his right arm, the one with the weapon mounted directly to it and fires! Rapid-fire bolts of energy are fired point blank into Backlash! The first one stings considerably and forces Backlash back a few steps.

However, with the second and subsequent blasts, something remarkable happens! They bounce off Backlash and streak back towards the cyborg striking him! The cyborg goes down from his own attacks.

In the background, the last three cyborgs regain their footing and begin to advance once more.

Ominously, there is movement from the cyborg that Dr. Photon first blasted. It begins to move and twitch and slowly rises back up to its feet. It’s clear that something is controlling the cyborg, as its head is slumped over and its human eye is closed! Ghoulishly it rises up to battle again!

Roll Call: Frostbite, Goldstar, Stargirl, Menagerie, Flux, Tesla, Starguard, and the Scarlet Sabre

In the arena level of the Claw’s ship, the rest of the Vigilant struggle with the Crimson Claw himself. Edgar is using the ships automated defenses to keep the Children of Azog at bay. Menagerie in the form of Goldstar and the real Goldstar just dived bombed the Claw with disastrous results. They nearly knocked themselves out!

The Claw grabs one of the Goldstar’s and slams her hard to the deck. In the background, the form of the other Goldstar shifts to reveal Menagerie.

Flux, having recovered from his earlier attack, phases back into reality. He’s giant-sized and his density at maximum. The decking groans in protest under his size and weight. Reaching out Flux grabs the Claw, locking his huge hands about him in a chokehold.

While that is going on, Stargirl flies in and carries Menagerie and Stargirl away to safety. Frostbite tries to target the claw, but is unsure and holds his fire. The spots playing before Tesla’s eyes begin to fade away. Starguard and the Scarlet Sabre stand ready to assist, but just how eludes them. The Claw seems so much more powerful then they can deal with.

“You humans are persistent,” the Claw coolly notes as Flux holds him fast. Much to Flux’s surprise, the chokehold doesn’t really seem to be choking the Claw at all! “I may not be a match for your physical might, but you will find the Crimson Claw has other powers at his command!”

The Crimson Claws eyes flash with power and Flux’s mind feels as if it’s on fire! Flux reels, having no defense against this form of attack and releases the Claw in the process.

The Claw looks around at the remaining heroes. Stargirl hovers over the deck with Menagerie in one hand, Goldstar in the other. The two are regaining their wits. Frostbite is close by ready to act and Tesla can now clearly see. Starguard and the Scarlet Sabre are prepared to defend themselves.

“I am your superior,” the Claw taunts. “The will of Azog will be carried out! Your world shall be over run!”

GM Notes:

Yeah, the Claw has the defense vs. a choke hold too. That takes us up to Phase 8. Flux is STUNNED, but everyone else can now act. Menagerie is in her true form.

Hero Status:

Flux: 6 of 40 STUN, STUNNED
Goldstar: 16 of 60 STUN
Menagerie: 6 of 42 STUN

Now what?

Blackout:
Without looking at the Purifier’s direction, Blackout hurtles his reserve rod towards the unsuspecting villain. It catches the rogue in the side of the head and the Purifier goes down in a daze.

Behind the Purifier, the regular troops are turning and starting to take aim on Blackout!

Lavender reaches the edge of the building and peers down the side. She lets out a startled gasp and then says; “I don’t think we have to worry about her going splat any time soon!”
Seemingly without looking, Blackout catches his throwing rod on it's return path. He becomes aware that the regular agents are now viewing him as a threat.

"Alright I'll deal with her in a second," Blackout says as he turns towards the troops. He drops his globe of darkness around himself and leaps into the middle of them, planning to go hand to hand in his element.

Goldstar

Goldstar:

Gathering her wits, Goldstar starts to become aware of her environment once more.

“Talk about beating your head against the wall,” she mutters.

“I’m okay, Gloria,” Goldstar tells her daughter. “You can let go now. I was just dazed for a moment.”

Looking back at the Claw, Goldstar is starting to realize that the Claw is immensely powerful. Probably too powerful to try and overpower. No, brainpower will carry the day, not brute force.

There has to be a reason why Tesseract chose this exact place to confront, and assumedly, defeat the Claw once and for all. But what?

“Talk about staring you straight in the face!” Goldstar cries out in realization. It’s the only thing that makes sense as to why this particular place was picked. There is something here even more powerful than the Claw.

Tapping her Comlink, Goldstar will say, “I’ve got an idea. Brute force isn’t going to win the day. Everyone get your space suits on and keep your distance from that monster.”

“Edgar, on my command, shut off life support including gravity and vent the atmosphere. Menagerie, assume my form once more as I may need help. You too, Gloria. The plan is simple. We grab the Claw and take him outside the ship. I’m going to throw him into the sun! Let’s see how he stands up to the heat and radiation from a star!”

Stargirl

Stargirl:

Flying in Gloria grabs the two Goldstar’s but one shifts back to Menagerie along the way. Guess she can’t stay as someone else indefinitely.

The monster seems to take out Flux once more and Gloria has no idea on how handle such a monstrosity. If her mom isn’t powerful enough, the Gloria certainly isn’t.

“Mom! You’re okay!” A moment later Stargirl lets go of both her mom and Menagerie. “I was worried.”

“Okay,” is about all that Gloria can think to say. She certainly doesn’t have any better ideas and will go along with her Mom’s plan.

To Infinity, And Beyond!

Menagerie:
Crimson Claw wrote:“I am your superior,” the Claw taunts. “The will of Azog will be carried out! Your world shall be over run!”
The grating voice of the alien rasps sharply against the pounding in Lily's head. Instinctively rubbing her temples, she starts to regain her focus, though virtually every square inch of her body still hurts. She can hear Goldy talking, and tries to focus on that.
“...in the face!” Goldstar cries out in realization. It’s the only thing that makes sense as to why this particular place was picked. There is something here even more powerful than the Claw.

As Goldstar talks, Menagerie feels Stargirl's grip on her loosening and instinctively shifts to a flying form - this time back to Quasar. However, at Goldy's request, she takes that form instead. "Okay, I'll do what I can, though I'm still pretty woozy." Since it sounds like muscle is needed, Menagerie activates Goldy's neutron star power. She waits for the venting, then will follow Goldstar's lead and try to help as best she can.

Backlash
“Told ya I was stronger Shrimp!” Hard Body taunts.
“For the time being you are.” He says with a smirk, “Besides, Im still better looking.” He taunts back.

“Ugh! As a stinging tingly sensation throbs in his chest he stumbles back as a second attack come flying at him. Though oddly it doesn’t penetrate, merely bounces off his skin hitting the cyborg with its own attack!!! Looking down he pokes his uniform, “I dunno how that happened but I’ll take it!!”

Baklash will do a move through full density on the next cyborg.
Take your best shot!

Frostbite

(assuming he is allowed a shot at the Claw before the others considering he held action if not dis regard this one action…

Moving far away Frosty will Activaate his suit. Frosty will attempt to Entangle the Crimson Claws head in ice, At the very least giving the others time to act and maybe suffocate the claw in the process.
