New Frontiers #111

The Deep Dragon and the drow that infested Castle Elcadan have been defeated. Drow prisoners remain locked and webbed within the prison cell. While some of the group takes care of matters in the drow cave, the others move off to explore the rest of the castle.

The dragon’s body is moved away from the shaft that leads deeper into the earth. Once cleared, Serena casts Wall of Iron over the top, sealing it off. Given the tunneling capability of this particular dragon, it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine that it was the one who created these shafts down to the Underdark.

The dragon’s body remains where it is as there are plans to salvage its scales to use in the possible creation of armor and shields.

The drow use armor and weapons crafted from some black metal. Most likely this metal is the one that drow mine in the Underdark. Some say that such metal, much like those who wear it, cannot survive in the light of day. So the value of such items is limited.

The larger dragon egg is noted in the back of the drow cave. It resembles the egg that was found in the raid on the Hextor Temple in New Keln. Serena destroys it with a pair of Magic Missile spells, ending that particular threat.

Argent searches the drow cave for other forms of treasure. She finds only a handful of coins, but does come across a bag of eight gems of various shapes and sizes. A pair of scrolls is found, along with a collection of eight potions. A small collection of gold coins can be taken from each fallen drow.

The groups spread out to explore the rest of the castle for any other threats. No obvious threats are found and no other creatures either.

Sherra does note something suspicious in the crypt area. In the burial chamber directly opposite the one that leads to the drow cave, there are some signs of beings traveling this way. Nowhere near as many as towards the drow cave, but enough to leave a noticeably trail in the dirt and dust.

The trial leads up to the back wall of the crypt. Searching there will reveal the presence of a secret passage! A short hallway leads to thirty-foot square room. Large locked chests ring the walls of the chamber. There are twelve chests in all.

A second door leads into another short passageway that leads away to your right. It ends at another door, but this door has strange symbols and sigils engraved on it in silver. The strange door appears to be locked as well.

Corley:

Sir Corley watches in grim satisfaction as the dragon egg is destroyed. One less enemy to threaten Cynalon in the days and weeks to come. The passage into the depths of the earth is covered with a wall of iron. Castle Elcadan seem a little more secured.

The Lady Argent finds some treasure, but it really doesn’t interest Sir Corley right now. Instead, he learns of a discovery made by the Lady Sherra. What appears to be a hidden treasury and a strange door.

“Any thought on just what we are dealing with here? Does it present a threat?”

Afterwards, the time to end the stalemate with the guards is at hand.

“Since this is a jail,” Sir Corley says, “then there must be chains and shackles here. We need to secure our prisoners and then escort them out into the courtyard for the guards to see.”

Once that task is complete, we’ll escort the drow to the courtyard.

Argent:

A collection of potions and scrolls are found along with some gems. Not a great haul, but not terrible either. These will all be gathered up for later examination. Serena destroys the egg and seals the shaft off.

The news of a hidden treasury being found reaches Argent’s ears and she’s off to investigate. A room with large chests are found. Since they might be trapped, Argent doesn’t touch them. A strange door is found.

“Any thought on just what we are dealing with here? Does it present a threat?”

“Logically, this door is here to either keep us out or keep something else in. No way to tell which is the case without actually trying to circumvent these wards.”

Argent doesn’t involve herself directly with the moving of the drow prisoners. She’ll keep an eye on them, ready to use her magic if necessary.

Ivy:

After being reassured that Sir Acerion is unharmed, Ivy wanders about with the others. She’s drawn to Sherra’s discovery.

“This might be the castle treasury,” Ivy notes upon seeing the chests.

“Perhaps we should salvage what we can.” Looking towards Sir Corley and Sir Acerion. “It maybe wise to bring a trinket of the Dragon to the Drow. With such evidence it would demoralize them further know their ‘Lord’ or what have you perished. A few teeth should do the trick.”

Upon hearing of the Chests and the mysterious sealed door, he recalls something of talk from Argernt sometime ago. To Argent he will ask, “Were all the pillars, that duplicated another of you, ever found?”

Chareos will help move the prisoners.

“It appears that I should have heeded by own warning,” Sir Corley says with a grin. “I’ve had worse experiences than this. Thank you for your assistance.”

“You are welcome my friend. Though truth be told I do not think I will engage a Dragon again, Its hide turned my weapons aside like leaves in the wind.”

Soon the words of the others reach his ears as several chests and a mysterious door is found.

“Could be anything to another crypt, or perhaps something more. Can anyone read the glyphs?”

Sir Corley:
Regnak wrote:“You are welcome my friend. Though truth be told I do not think I will engage a Dragon again, its hide turned my weapons aside like leaves in the wind.”
“It’s been my experience, that one rarely chooses to engage a dragon,” Sir Corley says with a laugh. “One tends to be thrust into the situation.”
Lord Chareos wrote:“Perhaps we should salvage what we can.” Looking towards Sir Corley and Sir Acerion. “It maybe wise to bring a trinket of the Dragon to the Drow. With such evidence it would demoralize them further know their ‘Lord’ or what have you perished. A few teeth should do the trick.”
“You may proceed, Lord Chareos,” Sir Corley states.
Lady Argent wrote:“Logically, this door is here to either keep us out or keep something else in. No way to tell which is the case without actually trying to circumvent these wards.”
Lady Ivy wrote:“I’d say the only threat is if we accidentally unleash something meant to remain imprisoned,” Ivy adds. “There is a way to find out if there is danger here or not. I can cast an Augury and see if what lies behind this door is a danger to us or not.”
While Lady Argent and Lady Ivy state there positions, Sir Corley is deep in thought. He’s trying to remember something that he learned not that long ago. Finally the memory surfaces and realization comes to the young knights face.

“I believe I know what this is. Jacob Deville spoke of something imprisoned underneath Elcadan Castle while we were in Ansimont. Something that the sisters feared and wished locked away forever. This might be a situation where the enemy of our enemy is our friend.”

“Proceed with your Augury, Lady Ivy. Unless you tell us that we are in great danger by doing so, my recommendation is to open this door and give our enemies another threat to contend with.”

If Lady Ivy does not indicate great danger, Sir Corley will alert everyone here and have most present vacate the immediate area.

“We don’t know for sure just how many pillar formations there are,” Argent answers. “Theoretically, each pillar could lead to a new formation and each formation had six pillars in it.”
Regnak wrote:“Could be anything to another crypt, or perhaps something more. Can anyone read the glyphs?”
“Typically, one needs magic to read such things.”
Ivy wrote:“I’d say the only threat is if we accidentally unleash something meant to remain imprisoned,” Ivy adds. “There is a way to find out if there is danger here or not. I can cast an Augury and see if what lies behind this door is a danger to us or not.”
“Probably the wisest choice,” Argent agrees. “Divination spells are not ones I make great use of.”

“You’re assuming that this Jacob was speaking the truth,” Argent notes. “But, if as you say, it is something the sisters fear, it might be worth the risk. Or we could be unleashing a greater threat than what we face now.”

Argent will move back as instructed and be ready to use her magic if what’s behind the door is a threat to her.

Sir Acerion:

A discovery is found that bring up a debate amoungst the gathered heroes. Acerion listens to everyone and spots Ivy's concerned look. He thinks a moment and then responds, "Even if whatever is sealed is an enemy of the sisters, there is no way to be certain that it would not do vast harm and destruction to the area or even the region. I would suggest against opening this until we can determine for certain what lies beyond. If you can get an answer that doesn't require we open or breech the seal of this prison then do so Lady Ivy."

The trial leads up to the back wall of the crypt. Searching there will reveal the presence of a secret passage! A short hallway leads to thirty-foot square room. Large locked chests ring the walls of the chamber. There are twelve chests in all.

“This might be the castle treasury,” Ivy notes upon seeing the chests.
"It's kind of a strange layout for a treasury," Sherra says as she studies the chests. She will try to determine if any or all are trapped but will make no attempts to open them.
“Could be anything to another crypt, or perhaps something more. Can anyone read the glyphs?”
Sherra will see if she can decipher any of the glyphs. Since none of the mages seem to be able to, she isn't sure whether she will have any success. Still it's worth trying.

The others talk about the decision of whether to open the door or not. Sherra will also try to determine if it is trapped should they decide to go that route.

A strange door has been found underneath Castle Elcadan. It was in a hidden area off the main crypt. A treasure vault had to be passed through to reach the door. The door itself is covered in magical glyphs. They are not traditional writing and have no real translation.

Sherra examines the chests in the treasure area and does not find any traps on them. The floor here isn’t as dirty as the crypt, as it has been sealed tighter. However, the stones of the floor have been discolored by the passage of many feet over many years. It appears that the heaviest traffic came from the sealed door, not from the crypt.

Sherra also examines the door, but finds not mundane mechanical traps upon it. The strange writing on it could be magical traps.

Ivy casts Augury, to try and learn what would happen if the sealed door were opened. After a few moments, the following words come to her mind.

“Vengeance upon friend and foe alike!”

Crysania:

After making sure the rest of the castle is clear, Crysania rejoins the others down in the basement. It seems that a seal door was found and Sir Corley is contemplating opening it!
Sir Corley wrote:“I believe I know what this is.

Ivy casts Augury, to try and learn what would happen if the sealed door were opened. After a few moments, the following words come to her mind.

"Vengeance upon friend and foe alike!"
Choosing her words carefully, Crysania speaks up. “Sir Corley, Sir Acerion, based on what words of Azrella, I strongly recommend against attempting to open this door, at least at the present time. I mean no disrespect to Ivy or her noble patron, but an Augury is among the least potent of divination spells. It can point one in the proper direction, but as is often the case it really doesn’t fully answer the question.”

“Let us leave this door for now and let me speak to my fellow high priests of the various faiths here in Elcadan. Let us cast more powerful divinations in an attempt to learn the true nature of whatever threat does lie behind this door. Surely one more day will not tip the scales out of our favor?”

“For now, let us complete our task here and break the deadlock with the guards. Let us bring the drow prisoners forth so that all can see them. If I may offer a suggestion, allow me to do the speaking. Among my priestly powers, I have ways to bring others around to my way of thinking. Perhaps this can be complimented by Lyonessa playing an appropriate tune on her on her harp?”

“Exactly,” Ivy adds. “There’s no need to be rash here. I’ll cast the Augury right away.”

Sir Corley:

Sir Corley listens the various opinions offered and the results of Lady Ivy’s divination.

“There is wisdom to your words,” Sir Corley admits. “Perhaps I was too eager to find an easy way to destroy our enemies, but as you say, exchanging one enemy for another isn’t a real solution either.”

“We leave the door alone for now. Reseal the doors back to the crypt. Let us deliver the drow to the guards and continue on with our mission.”

Sir Corley has no issue with Crysania speaking to the guards. She’s bound to be better known here in Elcadan than he or Sir Acerion are.

Post Continued:

A strange door has been discovered underneath Castle Elcadan. Ivy performs an Augury and it is revealed that whatever is behind that door would seek vengeance upon friend and foe alike. Crysania suggests leaving the door for now and allowing the various high priests in Elcadan to cast more powerful divinations to gain more information. Sir Corley agrees and the mysterious door is left alone for now.

While that is going on, Chareos pulls out a few teeth from the Deep Dragon carcass. Salvaging scales will have to wait until later.

The group returns to where the drow prisoners are being held. Shackles are located to secure the prisoners. Chareos uses his Ring of Free Action to slip into the webbing and lock the manacles on the prisoners while still being held fast by the webbing. When the webbing fades, the prisoners are all ready for transport. The drow seem demoralized with the death of Triel and offer little resistance.

It is near midnight when the group and their drow prisoners exit the castle. The guards on the castle walls immediately notice this action and turn their attention your way.

Crysania steps forward, separating herself from the rest of you. She starts to speak in a loud and clear voice. The priestess speaks of what has really been going on and just whom the guards had been protecting. As she speaks, a holy aura of power gathers about the priestess. Her words become louder and those who hear them can no longer deny the truth. At Crysania’s suggestion, the guards throw open the main gate to allow the other followers of Heironeous to enter the courtyard.

The action enrages one man among the guards, he who is their commander. The spell woven by Crysania does not affect him. Drawing his sword, he begins to attack his own guards! Warton of Heironeous and his followers reach the guard commander first and engage him in battle. Warton freezes the man with a Hold Person, ending the threat. Much like the Blackhawk Captain, this man in under the thrall of the Sisters and cannot be reasoned with.

With that, the situation at Castle Elcadan has been resolved. The deadlock with the guards has been broken and order has been restored. The current guards are relieved of duty for now, and members of the various faiths and the Free Guard will take over their duties for now. The drow are escorted back to the dungeon.

Your mission complete, Serena summons the Blackhawk once more so that you can return to the Sallavarian Estate for the evening. Crysania remains behind, as she’s been staying at the local temple. She informs her fellow High Priests of the strange door under the castle and calls upon their aid to divine what threat it may hold. They agree and will cast their divinations in the morning.

After a short flight, the group returns to the Sallavarian Estate. Sir Acerion and Sir Corley report their exploits to Duke Relon and Baron Validar while the rest of you unwind and turn in for the evening.

Morning comes all too soon and as you rise to face the day wonder just what new threats will materialize on your second full day in Elcadan.

GM Notes:

Just a case of me moving things along as we were really getting bogged down as of late. Castle Elcadan has been secured, but it is safe? What is behind the strange door? Further explorations might be required.

The High Priests will arrive to reveal their findings later on in the morning. Now you need to decide what your next move is going to be. The information the High Priests provide in the next post might figure prominently in that decision, but for now unwind and relax. The fight is far from over with!

Crysania employed high-level NWP’s in her speech to the guards, much like she did when you first found her in Corunglain with the orcs. In this case it was Divine Voice.

Sir Corley:

Leaving the strange door behind, we turn our attention to the drow prisoners. They are secured and once the Web fades escorted into the castle’s courtyard. There Crysania uses her priestly skills to win over the guards and they open the front gates allowing our allies to enter. This doesn’t sit well with the guards’ commander and he has to be overpowered. The old guards are relieved of duty for now and the priesthoods and the Free Guard take their place for the time being. The drow are returned to their cells. With their mission accomplished, Sir Corley requests that Serena bring the Blackhawk down so that we can return to the Salavarian Estate.

During the flight, Sir Corley removes his damaged armor with the assistance of his squires. He cleans himself as best he can, as he will have report what has transpired to the Duke.

Approaching Sir Acerion, Sir Corley will say, “I can handle the report if you wish to clean yourself up from your bath of dragon’s blood. The smell is most unpleasant.”

Once at the Sallavarian Estate, Sir Corley will request an audience with the Duke. Once granted, the young knight reports the groups’ activities.

“Your Grace, our mission has met with success. We have broken the deadlock with the Duke’s Guard and they have been relieved of duty. The local priesthoods assisted by members of the Free Guard are now carrying out their tasks. The former Captain of the Guards shows signs of being under the sister’s thrall, much like the Captain of the Blackhawk was.”

“We encountered many dangers and surprises within Castle Elcadan. Using the Blackhawk, we entered the castle from one of the high towers and made our way down. To our surprise, the interior of the castle with filled with the undead menaces known as wraiths. Clearly this was a trap left behind by the sisters to destroy anyone attempting to take the castle.”

“The Lady Ivy did destroy the wraiths on her own. It seems that Mother Boelle of Azrella was the carrier of the Azrellan Shield of Life, one of the four Guardian Shields. She transferred the shield to the Lady Ivy on her deathbed. When Lady Ivy attempted to turn the undead, the Shield unleashed a burst of light that destroyed the wraiths.”

“The burst of light also revealed the presence of drow on the ground floor of the castle. The same light also blinded them and we quickly overpowered the treacherous dark elves and imprisoned them in the castle dungeon.”

“We traced the drow to the subbasement and the castle crypt. There, we found a large encampment of drow led by a woman by the name of Triel. We engaged and defeated the drow only to discover that Triel was a dragon of some species we had never seen before. Her breath could dissolve flesh, leaving behind only gear and bones. We risked a frontal assault and Sir Acerion slew the dragon in honorable combat.”

“We found a natural cave off the crypt where the drow had been encamped. A shaft in the cave lead deeper into the depths of the earth and it did resemble the others shafts we have found. It seems that this Triel could dig through solid rock as easily as one can turn dirt. It is most probably that she is the one who dug these tunnels to the surface for the drow to use that we’ve been finding. The Lady Serena did seal the shaft by placing a Wall of Iron over the top of it.”

“But that is not the end of our discoveries. A large egg was discovered in the cavern that Lady Serena and Sir Acerion identified as being the same to the one you found in the Hextor Temple in New Keln. It was an egg that held a growing Ember. The egg was quickly destroyed.”

“In another secret chamber, a magically sealed door was discovered off a hidden treasury. I believe this door hold what Jacob Deville described to use in Ansimont; the thing that the sisters feared and locked away. The Lady Ivy did cast an Augury and was told that what was behind the door would seek vengeance upon friend and foe alike. It was decided to leave this strange door alone for now. At the Lady Crysannia’s suggestion, the local high priests will be casting more powerful divinations in the morning to better learn the nature of this door and the threat it holds.”

“That brings us to the matter of how to proceed next. We seem to have banished two of the sisters, for how long we do not know. That just leaves one, the dread necromancer who makes her home in Akorros. It is of my opinion that we travel there and remove this menace. It is she who is responsible for these Ember eggs. From what Lord Sharadin said, tissue samples are needed to create these magical clones. Such samples should be in her laboratory. We destroy them, that stops their cloning efforts leaving only those eggs all ready in place.”

“While there are numerous other threats for us to contend with, at this time it is this threat that I feel we need to defeat next. What say you, Your Grace?”

Thankfully, the strange door is left behind untouched. That coupled with the guard situation being peacefully resolved makes Ivy very happy. She’s impressed at the power that Crysania commands. Perhaps someday Ivy will be that potent.

After boarding the Blackhawk, Ivy will speak with Sir Acerion.

“We should get you cleaned up, milord. Being covered in smelly dragon’s blood does not enhance your reputation.”

Ivy is tired by the time the group returns to Jallarzi’s estate. She’ll retire for the evening right away. Night morning she’ll rise and clean up. Then she’ll pray to replace spells cast last night.

Afterwards she’ll join Sir Acerion for breakfast.

“Typically, one needs magic to read such things.”

“It is good to know such things. At least the door was not disturbed by our ignorance.” He says thoughtfully.

Once they return to the estate, Rek will go to sleep and pray come morning.

“We don’t know for sure just how many pillar formations there are,” Argent answers. “Theoretically, each pillar could lead to a new formation and each formation had six pillars in it.”

“Seems we will have to wait and see.” He says with a rueful smile. “Be back in a moment. It is time to get evidence of the Drow’s Leader demise.” He says as he moves off the dragons corpse and removes two teeth. Then, rejoins the others.

Pulling the teeth from his robes, Chareos holds them out for the drow to see, “Here is what is left of your Triel. The way you came is bared; your chances of escape are but a few.” Giving the teeth to Sherra, Chareos will take the shackles and move into the cell, securing the iron firmly around their wrists. Double checking each one he steps out of the web, “They are ready.”

Chareos watches as the guards open the door and the followers of various faiths enter. Within a short time The battle and crisis is over but what lays ahead? He wonders to himself as he heads towards the Blackhawk. Once they return Chareos will spend sometime in front of the fireplace, warming his hands by the fire then retire for the night. He will eat heartily in the morning and replace his spells come morning.

Sir Acerion:

Approaching Sir Acerion, Sir Corley will say, “I can handle the report if you wish to clean yourself up from your bath of dragon’s blood. The smell is most unpleasant.”

"I would prefer to be there," Acerion replies, "but indeed I must get myself and my armor clean, and that will be a tremendous undertaking."

“We should get you cleaned up, milord. Being covered in smelly dragon’s blood does not enhance your reputation.”

"I had no idea my reputation needed enhancing," Acerion replies with a smile, "but you are not the first to comment on my current state. I will indeed endeavor to be clean before this evening is over."

Acerion will do just that as soon as he is able. He will clean himself and then begin the long task of cleaning and polishing his armor, weapons and gear. Before the night is through, he will don his holy robes and offer prayers to his god in thanks for seeing them through the day's trials and for their victories.

Afterwards she’ll join Sir Acerion for breakfast.

Acerion will remain dressed in his robes as he prepares to meet Ivy for breakfast. He is most curious to hear what Corley learned and what their next plan is.

Sherra takes the teeth from Chareos and remains close by should he encounter any resistance or surprises from the drow. Seeing that he has no problems moving through the web or dealing with them, she comments, "Nice trick."

Once we're all back and settled, Sherra will spend a little time inquiring about the crafting of armor and weapons from the dragon remains. She doesn't know if anyone is skilled enough in Elcadan to do such work, but she imagines that the remains must be harvested soon if they are to be of any use.

The rest of the evening after a light dinner she will spend outside the walls for a while, patrolling and enjoying the night air. Even though Sherra is certain that the guards are competent, an extra set of eyes, especially a rogue's, certainly couldn't hurt.

Aftermath

The trouble with the Duke's Guards has been dealt with and Castle Elcadan explored. The Guardians and their Seeker allies return to the Sallavarian Estate for the evening. While Sir Corley makes his report to Duke Relon and Baron Validar, most everyone else goes their own way.

Sherra questions the castle staff about those skilled in crafting armor and weapons in Elcadan. Everham is considered by most to be the best forger of armor and weapons in the city. Is forge is in Crosstown. Although when it comes to leather apparel, including armor, Rislena's Fine Leathers is the place to go. Her shop is also in Crosstown. However, when it comes to footwear for adventurers, Sectarin's Bootery in New Town is shop of choice. All three shops are known for their custom work, quality, and high prices.

Afterwards Sherra helps patrol the estate, but finds it to be a quiet and relaxing night. Storm clouds can be vaguely spotted on the horizon, suggesting that a storm is coming.

Sir Corley completes his report to Duke Relon on the night's activities.

"Well done, Sir Corley," Duke Relon states. "My compliments to you and your companions on the handling of this task. While I agree that destroying the lair of this vile necromancer is important, I would hold of on that task for at least a day or two. I fear that the enemy may be waiting for you and your associates to go off on a mission before launching their next attack. I am also interested in hearing what the High Priests learn before deciding a definitive course of action. Now that you have dealt with the major threats at Castle Elcadan, it will have to be explored and cleansed of any minor threats before I will move my family into it."

"Now go rest, Sir Corley. I am sure that there will be new troubles for you to contend with come the morning."

Elsewhere in the massive estate, Sir Acerion has completed the task of cleaning up himself and his armor. Before retiring, he says his prayers to Heironeous. As he does so, he drifts off into a meditative trance. Soon Acerion becomes aware that he is not alone.

"Hello, my son," Hasverion states. From what the Deva stated back in the Hextor Temple, they could communicate in this manner. "You've done well this day, but I fear that the challenges will only grow larger as the days go past."

"Cynalon is at a crossroads. It is fractured and you will soon be at war with your own countrymen. Even now the battle has already started. The Order of the Griffon has not faired any better. Those allied with your cause have been imprisoned in their own Order house. These good and honorable men need rescuing and those who conspire against you need to be show the error of your ways."

"Be strong and true, my son. While it may not see like it, this crisis will pass and order will be restored. One day you shall rule a large area by water with your family. The master has foreseen this. Prepare yourself for the trials to come."

Next day after the morning meal, the various High Priests arrive at the estate. Warton and Crysania of Heironeous, Galfrey Kaarne of Mystra, and Sturm of Helm and shown into the presence of the new Duke and Duchess of Elcadan and those also present.

"We have learned much, Your Grace," Galfrey Kaarne states. "Between our individual divinations and then by combining what we learned we have a good idea of what is imprisoned behind the door underneath Castle Elcadan."

"The individual in question is Alexander Deville, the son of Thelma Deville. The offspring of a mortal and a lower plane being is called a tiefling and that is what Alexander is. Like their infernal parents, tieflings have innate abilities beyond those of mere mortals. Given the chaotic nature of the lower planes, these abilities can vary. But unlike their infernal parents, tieflings can be slain."

"It seems that Alexander's abilities are very much a danger to all those with infernal blood. He absorbs powers and traits from other demons and tieflings, making them his own. He stole the emotions of his mother for instance, making her cold and very much like the undead she favors. We learned that he stole the ability to age from one of his siblings, forever looking this tiefling into the form of a child while being over a hundred years old."

"Our enemy knew of the danger and they had Alexander locked away for their protection. Alexander burns with vengeance and if released he would attack his own family to gain their powers and to end their lives. Alexander would continue to be come more and more powerful in the process, but in spite of all this he would remain a mortal and thus could be slain. If released, he would wage war against the Deville's and woe to any innocents who get in his way."

"The question then becomes is it worth releasing Alexander so that he can wreck havoc against the Deville family? Or would we just be trading one menace for another? The only thing in our favor is that, for a time, they would be too busy fighting each other to worry about us and that Alexander could be permanently killed."

Before anything else can be said there is a minor commotion at the chamber entrance. There, a familiar woman can be seen. It is the Lady Teris Penhaligon, although her appearance is unkempt and she seems very weary.

"Your Grace, fellow Lords, I bring dire news!" Teris pants. "The worst has come to pass! Forgive my appearance, but I have rode for days now to reach and warn you."

"Sir Alon's fears have been realized. Duke Kelvin has usurped the throne, apparently with the blessing of our former king, Victor the Seventh. Those of us who follow Victor the Eight have been declared outlaws and there is a bounty on our heads. I only narrowly escaped so that I could warn our allies of this danger. Even as we speak, the armies of the Inner Kingdom are gathering. They will come to try and 'restore order' to the Outer Kingdom. My friends, we are at war."

"Has anyone seen or heard from our true king these last few days?"

GM Notes:

And thus we finally come to what has been brewing for many years now: The Cynalonian Civil War. There have been hints and events setting this up for a long time now. Finally we're at a point where it can begin proper!

Oh, I didn't work it into the above post, but Teris has a letter from Pyris for Baron Validar from his grandmother, who is currently ruling in his place. The letter was quickly written when Lady Teris stopped in Pyris searching for you. The gist of the letter concerns a visitor who came to Pyris Castle not long after you left to see Lady Vera Ardel from Corunglain. The operative invited Lady Ardel to come to Corunglain, but she declined. The agent was most persistent until Lady Gwendolyn ordered the man to leave. Not long after that, Lady Vera vanished from her quarters. It is feared that she has been kidnapped and has been taken to Corunglain.

That should give everyone something to talk about.

Now what?

Corley:
Sir Acerion wrote:"I would prefer to be there," Acerion replies, "but indeed I must get myself and my armor clean, and that will be a tremendous undertaking."
“I will alert you if anything unexpected comes up,” Sir Corley vows. “I’ll have a similar task as I have bite marks to work out of my own armor. But those will have to wait.”
Duke Relon wrote:"Well done, Sir Corley," Duke Relon states. "My compliments to you and your companions on the handling of this task. While I agree that destroying the lair of this vile necromancer is important, I would hold of on that task for at least a day or two. I fear that the enemy may be waiting for you and your associates to go off on a mission before launching their next attack. "Now go rest, Sir Corley. I am sure that there will be new troubles for you to contend with come the morning."
“As you command, Your Grace,” Sir Corley says with a bow. “A pleasant evening to you.”

Sir Corley will retire for the evening and catch up on his sleep. Next morning, he’s up and dresses in his regular military uniform. He joins his companions for breakfast.
Sir Acerion wrote:Acerion will remain dressed in his robes as he prepares to meet Ivy for breakfast. He is most curious to hear what Corley learned and what their next plan is.
“Nothing new to report,” Sir Corley will say to his companions. “The Duke wishes us to remain here in Elcadan, at least for the next few days. He fears that the enemy will make another attack if we were to depart and that makes sense to me. For now, we remain vigilant and on guard. Perhaps the High Priests will have learned more from their divinations. They should be reporting their findings to the Duke later this morning.”

Sir Corley is in attendance when the High Priests speak to the Duke. He listens with interest when they tell the tale of Alexander Deville. It seems that what Lady Ivy learned was accurate. Sir Corley remains unsure if the man should be freed to carry out his vengeance or not. But alas, it is not his decision to make.

But before any further discussion can occur, a new guest arrives in the form of the Lady Teris Penhaligon. She brings with her the most shocking of news. It seems that Duke Kelvin of the Inner Kingdom has made a play for power and now calls himself king. He is forming an army to battle those who follow the real King of Cynalon. No one seems to know the current location of the real king.

“It seems that our priorities have changed once more,” Sir Corley will state. “Elcadan and the other outer kingdom provinces must be made ready for war. Armies must be formed and fortifications built. The king must be located and our other allies gathered together. Was not he and Lady Harlena bound for Athenos the last I heard?”

“Our lives have just become a lot more complicated.”

Next morning, Sir Corley reports that were to stand ready for whatever trouble comes up next. Later Sir Acerion attends the meeting with the Duke and High Priests of Elcadan. Ivy tags along, not really having anything else to do. What she hears astonishes her!

“This is madness! Countrymen taking up arms against countrymen? The demons must have something to do with this. I can feel it in my bones.”

Chareos

Sherra takes the teeth from Chareos and remains close by should he encounter any resistance or surprises from the drow. Seeing that he has no problems moving through the web or dealing with them, she comments, "Nice trick."

“It is a simple way to break someone’s will. If they believe in something enough it is a boon to them and an advantage to their foes, if they can find a way to use it against them.” He says simply.

Excusing himself from Argent, Chareos goes to the chambers in which the meetings are proceeding. Quietly he walks to the back and leans against a wall listening to what is said then ill tidings come..
“That is just the tip of the sword, Sir Corley.” Walking forward, “The outer kingdoms are faced with a battle not on one front but two. The humanoids will surely hear of this and seek to exploit our weakness.”
“Civil War? In all my days I would not wish this.” He says in shock though quickly subdues his feelings. “Who should go to find the King? And where to take him once he is safe?”

Sir Acerion:

“I meant no offense,” Ivy quickly apologizes. “These last few days have been trying for us all.”

"No offence was taken, my dear Ivy," Acerion replies. "My attempt at jest is as haggard as my appearence. All will be better once I am clean and well rested." With that Acerion departs for his long tasks that still await him.

"Be strong and true, my son. While it may not see like it, this crisis will pass and order will be restored. One day you shall rule a large area by water with your family. The master has foreseen this. Prepare yourself for the trials to come."

Acerion takes in all of this. It is a mixed message for certain, but not one the paladin is overly surprised about. With all that has happened, there was certainly something far more grand in the works. Of course the rest of it isn't revealed until the following day.

“This is madness! Countrymen taking up arms against countrymen? The demons must have something to do with this. I can feel it in my bones.”

"Last night during my meditations I was informed of just such an occurrance about to happen," Acerion reveals. "I have learned that the Order of the Griffon has been imprisoned in their own house. We must look to this as a situation needing remedy very shortly. We will need those valiant men with us during this time."

Acerion waits to hear what anyone else might add or propose before heading out to prepare himself for the trials yet to come and the challenges they now all must face.

Afterwards Sherra helps patrol the estate, but finds it to be a quiet and relaxing night. Storm clouds can be vaguely spotted on the horizon, suggesting that a storm is coming.
Sherra thanks the staff for their information, filing it away for tomorrow. She helps patrol but all is quiet. Noting the storm, she can't help but wonder if it's a sign of things to come. She sees Regnak out in the night air as well, but doesn't disturb the man.

Getting an early start the next day, Sherra hits all three suggested shops. She will see who, if any of them, has had experience in dealing with crafting armor and weaponry from dragon remains. If any of them seem capable, she will begin to coordinate the transfer of materials to their establishments and getting them to see what can be used. Individual orders will have to wait until she can talk to the others, but if this part of it can be done while the others have their meetings, it will make the process a bit faster.

Of course she has no idea at this point what is going on...

Jallarzi Sallavarian:

Lady Sallavarian takes in Lady Penhaligons report with grim concern.
Sir Corley wrote:“It seems that our priorities have changed once more,” Sir Corley will state. “Elcadan and the other outer kingdom provinces must be made ready for war. Armies must be formed and fortifications built. The king must be located and our other allies gathered together. Was not he and Lady Harlena bound for Athenos the last I heard?”
“You are correct, Sir Corley,” Jallarzi states. “The King was traveling to Athenos to inform Duke Linton of the change in Elcadan and that he had gained new territories. From my understanding, once he was finished there, he’d be traveling overland to Elcadan to see how we were progressing. Given everything that has happened since we left Pryis, I’d forgotten all about it. By my reckoning, the King should have arrived all ready.”

“I can attempt to scry for him with a Crystal Ball. If I can locate him, then I can teleport to that location and bring him and Dame Sharl here.”

“As Lord Chareos stated, we need a safe haven for the King. The Salavarian Estate is magically protected, but will not stand against an army. Castle Elcadan is the next logical choice as it is defensible. The Fellowship of Mages built the castle, wizards from Alphatia. They must have included magical protections into the castle, perhaps even its own Spell Engine. If we can activate these protections, then the castle will be the best defendable place in Elcadan. A closer inspection of the castle is required.”

“And as this point, I think we cannot be sure just who is or is not an ally. We may be facing enemies on multiple fronts. We need more information.”

The joy of seeing them once again is quickly disrupted though as the turn of events that has them all facing a civil war are now revealed. She had hoped for more time to relax and treat everyone to her latest ballad, but it seems that this must wait.

As a songstress, Lyonessa is certain she could help bring this war to a bloodless conclusion, but being able to get in to see the commanders and rulers under such military conditions is going to prove difficult if not impossible. Eager to get information and learn of what they must next do, Lyonessa waits as patiently as she can.
