Hammerfall #13


Morning comes to Mountain Lake and the dwarves are ready to continue onward with their mission to reach Hammerfall and free Aria from the dominating influence of the Iron Orb. Food, drink, and other provisions are obtained from the citizens of Mountain Lake.

Before departing, Grondar assists Ziana in casting a Sanctify spell on the Temple. The spell creates a beneficial area for those of the Berronar faith. The spell is not permanent, but will make the new temple feel more like home to Ziana. Once a new altar is consecrated, the Sanctify will be come permanent and those faithful will gain its bonuses.

“Here priestess, these will do you more good them they will me.”

Like Oran, he donates most of the gold to Ziana and the new temple. "Perhaps you can use this, Sister, to bargain with our good Mayor for the silver you need to build the altar."

“Thank you for your kind donations,” Ziana will graciously say. “Indeed, this will all be put towards furthering Berronar’s good works. May Berronar smile upon your mission. If there is anything that I can do to help, please let me know.”

Jenna also wishes Grondar well and thanks him for starting her on the path of serving Lady Truesilver.


The matter of alerting the dwarves back at Fort Fletcher comes up. There is already a small group of the recovery force here in Mountain Lake. Aria had them follow the main group the next morning while you dealt with the frost giants. Jenna and Ziana were part of that group. So any one of them can be sent back to Fort Fletcher to update Baluk. They can all go back right now, if Grondar so desires. There is work still to be done in Mountain Lake, but it isn’t anything critical.

The time comes fro the group to move on and you find that Mayor Arlos himself will act as your guide.

“I know the secret ways to get past the gate that bars the entrance,” the mayor explains. “This entry point had a dual purpose. It was used to move goods into and from Mountain Lake. A fresh air shaft is there as well.”

The day is overcast and a light snow is falling. The entrance to the cave is about a mile from Mountain Lake itself, further up in the mountains. Given the snow fall and that the path isn’t clear, it takes the group about an hour just to make the journey.

Finally you reach the cave opening. The dwarves can immediately tell that the cave has been worked on. The tunnel was straightened and the floor leveled. The passage is a comfortable 20’ wide and nearly fifteen feet high. Mule pulled wagons were used to make the trip between Mountain Lake and Rockhaven.

Some sixty feet into the cave you reach the gate Mayor Arlos spoke of previously. As the Mayor went down the cavern, he lighted torches secured in iron holders mounted to the cavern walls. The gate itself is constructed of very thick wood, reinforced with iron bands. Hinges as large as your arm secure the doors to the side of the opening. There is a large pull ring on each door, but the gates are solidly locked.

“Here’s an example of fine dwarven engineering,” Mayor Arlos will say with noticeable pride in his voice. “The gate is secured with iron bars that drop down from above the frame. Nothing has ever broken through them and nothing probably ever will. But there is a way to release the bars, for those who know the secret.”

The mayor moves to the right hand side of the doorway. Mounted on the way there is another torch holder. But he does not light this torch. Instead, the Mayor removes the torch, letting it drop to the cavern floor. He grasps the holder, pulls it out slightly while turning it clockwise. Once completely upside down the holder pops loose from the wall. A thick chain is pulled out from the back of the holder. Grasping the chain, the Mayor pulls on it, dragging more of it into the cavern. Once enough has been played out, the Mayor secures the chain to a holding point on the wall that’s almost unnoticeable.

“There! Pull on the gate now!”

Those who do pull on the gate will find that it opens very easily. The gate is finely counter-balanced and works with minimal effort. The air released from the door is stale. It’s clear that no one has come this way in a long time.

Behind the gate, the path continues onward and slightly downward. There are a few side chambers near the gate, where guards used to be stationed in the past. These are all dust covered and show no signs of recent uses. About fifty feet in there is a second gate, this one securing the way to Rockhaven. Both gates have obvious ways to open them from the inside. The method used by the Mayor to open the first gate will open the second one from the outside.

The second gate is opened and the other side of this gate has taken some damage in the past, as if beings unknown attempted to force their way past it but were not successful. The tunnel begins to lead deeper into the earth at this point and also curves away to your left. Dwarves carved this tunnel, like much of the cave leading to it in the distant past.

“This is as far as I will accompany you,” the Mayor states. “This tunnel will spiral downward for a time before straightening out. Then it will go straight for several miles before spiraling down once more. It will end inside the gates of Rockhaven. Back when this passage was in regular use there were no side passages off of it. Now I cannot say what awaits you. There are some chasms to cross, but I doubt that these will be of any great hindrance to you. I will seal the gates again after you have passed. Good fortune to you all!”

GM Notes:

The tunnel is typically 20’ wide and 12’ high with a noticeable downward grade to it. It’ll spiral downward, around the fresh airshaft, before leveling out. There are more torches and torch holders on the walls. They are staggered so that there is a torch holder every 30’ along the sides of the tunnel. Going to light the torches as you go or just rely on your innate infravision?

What’s your marching order going to be? Any special precautions going to be in place?

Now what?

[Senoia]

Senoia:

"Aye, well ye don't know me well enough lass!" Daraden replies with a laugh. He slides over and slaps the seat next to him hard, guessing she'll join. He'll partake in some drinking games with Senoia while Darkfang couldn't seem more bored. The wolf mostly lays there with his head on his front paws and his ears flat, completely uninterested. Daraden will later relate some of his and Darkfang's exploits leading up to their current situation. The one about the half-ogre and the missing tree limb seems to make Darkfang chuckle, if a wolf can be thought to be able to.

“Then I’ll just have to get to know you better!” Senoia responds as she takes a seat. She’ll enjoy the various drinking games and the tales told.

If the opportunity arises for Daraden and Senoia to partake in a little of the 'rough and tumble' he certainly won't mind, but won't push the matter. "Me ma said it never wise to argue with a woman stronger than you," he'll say if Senoia refuses and let the matter drop.

That is what Senoia had in mind to begin with. Before leaving the table, she’ll undo her pigtails, letting her blonde hair flow naturally. Taking Daraden by the hand, they’ll retire to a private room for the evening.

Later, Senoia sigh, “Except for what happened to Lady Aria, this pretty much a perfect day. Good fighting, good drinking, a goodly pile of gold, and a good man to be with. Helps relieve the day’s tension. Been too long since I was last with a man.”

The sleeping arrangements prove to be interesting, as Darkfang tries to find a place on the bed. “Look furball, there’s only so much room here!”


Next morning, Senoia will rise and wash up before dressing. She’ll spend time placing her hair into their regular pigtails before slipping into her armor. Once that is done, she’ll go downstairs for a hearty breakfast and will be ready to begin the days activities.

Grondar decides to head directly to Rockhaven. After taking care of some business in town, it’s out in the cold. The overland journey to the cave entrance is a long and tedious one.

“Give me a foe to fight any day!” Senoia complains as she steps into the cave, shaking the snow off of her.

Mayor Arlos leads the way and shows how to open the sealed gates that lead to Rockhaven. He is understandably proud of the dwarven engineering.

“Of course it’s impressive! We’re dwarves. We don’t dabble in magic like humans and elves do! We build things with our hands, things that will last for generations!”

Since it looks like they’ll have another long walk ahead of them, Senoia slides her warhammers into her belt for now. She’ll follow the group down the tunnel.

[Grondar]

Grondar:

“Thank you for your kind donations,” Ziana will graciously say. “Indeed, this will all be put towards furthering Berronar’s good works. May Berronar smile upon your mission. If there is anything that I can do to help, please let me know.”

"Thank you, Ziana, I know the temple is in good hands." Grondar scratches his beard for a moment. "There is one thing you could do, if you're willing. Could you please continue Jenna's training in my absense? Also, come to think of it, could you lead the mission to return and tell Baluk Ironforge of our progress here and intention to push on toward Hammerfall and Aria? I know he would welcome having his workers back, and then you and Jenna could return her to continue your work on this temple." Since Mountain Lake has it's own population to deal with the work here, Grondar figures that the recovery team is needed more in the mines.

Jenna also wishes Grondar well and thanks him for starting her on the path of serving Lady Truesilver.

"Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to begin your training, Jenna," Grondar says, feeling a bit self-conscious around this attractive young woman. "I have asked Ziana to lead the mission back to Fort Fletcher. I have also asked her to continue your training. Could you go with her, and then the two of you could return to care for the temple? I look forward to seeing your progress once we return."

The mayor himself leads them to the entrance to Rockhaven and beyond. The trip to the cave is not long, though it is a bit further before they reach the dwarven gates. The construction is subtle, yet strong, but Arlos knows the secret way to pass the gates. A little ways further, they reach the second gate, which is similarly constucted and bypassed. Strangely, this one shows some damage on the inside; whatever tried to bypass it must not have been very smart, as they could not figure out how to open it from the inside.

"Thank you, Mayor," Grondar replies gravely. "I pray that we return soon, with Aria in good health. I know Mountain Lake has much work to do in order to recover fully, but with your leadership, I know the town is in good hands." Of course, Senoia grumbles and grouses a bit, but Grondar is coming to understand that this is just her way.

Soon, the gates are closed and it is time to continue on. Grondar will ask Farian to lead the way. Daraden and Darkfang can follow behind, to take advantage of the wolf's keen senses. Next will come Oran, followed by Grondar. Senoia will be in charge of guarding the rear of the group and lighting the torches as they pass.

“You might be looking to have those Chasms breached by dwarven bridges. There is no telling how long those spikes will hold that rope in place, It will eventually fray and snap.” Looking at those who will be going. “I would not wish to be on the short end of that rope…”

Next will come Oran, followed by Grondar. Senoia will be in charge of guarding the rear of the group and lighting the torches as they pass.

“Would a Wayfinder be anywhere else?” He adds as he walks gruffly past the priest grumbling slightly. “What about her?” he asks looking to the non dwarf of the party.

[Virae]

Virae

Rising early in the morn, Virae sets her mind to studying new spells then gathering her gear she heads down stairs for a bit to eat, having her full of the food she takes out her shortswords and painstakingly sharpens them with her whetstone.

She follows the dwarves through the snowy storms, her form covered in white powder she is finally able to shake free of the snows cold embrace, “I tire of this weather, I much prefer the heat.” As she dusts the snow from her shoulders and pushes back her cowl.

“Of course it’s impressive! We’re dwarves. We don’t dabble in magic like humans and elves do! We build things with our hands, things that will last for generations!”

Silently she eyes the dwarven fighter, she can’t help but wonder do she detest magic so much because she fears it? Or merely she does not understand it. “And if one among you could dabble in magic?” she asks the pigtailed warrior. As she studies the Wall, “It makes for a fine tomb, or prison.” She softly comments as she smells the stale air within.

“What about her?” Farian says.

“Kharyna used me as a scout during the time I was with her.” She adds to the Wayfinder, “I could help you in your task, if you wish it.”

[Senoia]

Senoia:

Silently she eyes the dwarven fighter, she can’t help but wonder do she detest magic so much because she fears it? Or merely she does not understand it. “And if one among you could dabble in magic?” she asks the pigtailed warrior.

Senoia regards the stranger amongst them; the only non-dwarf here. “Dwarves and magic not from the gods don’t mix,” Senoia retorts. “Oh, there are the usual legends of such dwarves who can harness the power of magic, but they are just myths. Because of that, we’ve become master craftsmen. What we build will stand for the lifetime of any elf!”

Soon, the gates are closed and it is time to continue on. Grondar will ask Farian to lead the way. Daraden and Darkfang can follow behind, to take advantage of the wolf's keen senses. Next will come Oran, followed by Grondar. Senoia will be in charge of guarding the rear of the group and lighting the torches as they pass.

Senoia is surprised to learn that she’s to bring up the rear and light torches as they go along. She’s not pleased with the menial task, but decides not to make a big deal of it. Besides, should any action come up, she’ll be eager to get right into the thick of things! Carrying a lighted torch with her, Senoia will light the ones on the wall as she passes.

[Oran]

Oran:

“Thank you for your kind donations,” Ziana will graciously say. “Indeed, this will all be put towards furthering Berronar’s good works. May Berronar smile upon your mission. If there is anything that I can do to help, please let me know.”

“You are most welcome, Priestess,” Oran answers. “The blessing of our gods is all that we can hope for.”

Oran is his usual stoic self as the journey progresses. His dwarven plate armor is shiny and clean from his previous nights efforts. How unlike the young Senoia whose armor gives one the impression that she slept in it. Kids these days.

The journey passes quiet enough. Trudging through deep snow is not pleasant and the cold is felt. But once in the cave the warmth of the earth can be felt once more. The gates are strong and secure, but a secret way to open them is revealed by the Mayor. The way to Rockhaven is then revealed. Oran takes his position in the marching order, keeping a wary eye on what is going on in front of him, ready to use his Firehammer at a moment’s notice.

[Dougan]

Dougan:

Dougan rises early in the morning. He celebrated much like the others, but in moderation. He goes through his morning prayers and regains spells spent the previous day. Dougan eats and prepares for the days activities. Soon the group is marching towards the cavern that will lead us to Hammerfall. Mayor Arlos shows us the gates to Hammerfall.

“A fine example of dwarven construction,” Dougan notes. “The All-Father must be proud.”

Overhearing the conversation between Senoia and Virae, Dougan adds, “Construction and engineering are the gifts given to the dwarven race by the All-Father himself. Craftsmanship and pride in ones work are the hallmarks of the dwarves. There is a beauty to such things to a dwarf’s eye that non-dwarves cannot understand. It is our ‘art’.”

Dougan’s name isn’t called out, as the marching order is set so he’ll take a position in the back between Grondar and Senoia.

[Grondar]

Grondar:

“Would a Wayfinder be anywhere else?” He adds as he walks gruffly past the priest grumbling slightly. “What about her?” he asks looking to the non dwarf of the party.

"Ah, yes, Virae," Grondar mutters, realizing that he's still not entirely sure of her status within the group - or of his own. "That's a good option, Virae. Or, you could take the rear with Senoia and watch for attacks from other directions. Both jobs are important."

Dougan’s name isn’t called out, as the marching order is set so he’ll take a position in the back between Grondar and Senoia.

Noticing his fellow priest taking a position behind him, Grondar again notes that he forgot another party member. Worse still, he's uncomfortable telling a fellow priest what to do. Clearly, he needs to improve in many areas if he's going to be responsible for this team. Fortunately, the position Dougan chose for himself is a good one.

She will take the rear position, looking rather bored as she watches for trouble from behind.

“Of course, Lord Grondar,” Ziana answers. “In fact, we were pressed into making this journey on a moment’s notice. Much of my belongings are back at Fort Fletcher, so I was going to have to make the trip at some point. I will report what has transpired to Baluk.”

"Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to begin your training, Jenna," Grondar says, feeling a bit self-conscious around this attractive young woman. "I have asked Ziana to lead the mission back to Fort Fletcher. I have also asked her to continue your training. Could you go with her, and then the two of you could return to care for the temple? “No, thank you,” Jenna gratefully responds. “You’ve shown me much of the ways of Berronar Truesilver. You’ve started me a journey of a lifetime. Ziana will guide me further along. Just wait to see how far I’ve come when we next meet!”

Road to Rockhaven:

Following Mayor Arlos, the expedition is lead to a cave a mile away from Mountain Lake. Inside the cave is a mined passageway that leads to Rockhaven, a ‘suburban’ area of Hammerfall. The sealed gates are passed through and closed again behind you.

Farian leads the way, followed by Daraden and Darkfang. Oran and Grondar come next followed by Dougan with Virae and Senoia bringing up the rear.

The trek is an uneventful one. As the group moves along obstacles from past earthquakes are encountered, including chasms that Mayor Arlos noted. Getting across these is mostly just time consuming. Virae can just fly across the gap and secure a rope on the other side, or Oran can leap the chasm if it’s not too wide. Half a dozen of these small chasms are crossed. The ceiling’s given way in a few places, forcing the group to climb over the debris piles.

In spite of these obstacles, good time is made. It is after lunch when the tunnel begins to spiral downwards again on it’s descent to Rockhaven. As you get closer, Darkfang becomes more and more on edge. He’s picking up familiar and unfriendly scents. Due to this, the group proceeds cautiously.

At last the tunnel straightens out once more. There were gates much like the one you passed through at the bottom of the passage, but these have seem better days. One has been shattered with weapons sometime in the past. Only part of it remains on its hinges and hunks of wooden debris litter the cavern floor. The other door was simply pushed open and remains that way.

Rockhaven sits in a large natural cavern that was modified by the dwarf’s ages ago. The ceiling peaks at over 60’ feet overhead. The sides and far end of the cavern are too far away to see in the darkness. Only an occasionally torch fire can be seen in the town. But it is the noises that tell you that you are not alone here. The sound of metal impacting upon metal is heard off in the distance. A major battle is taking place, but it is still far from your location.

Immediately before you is a main street and leads into the heart of Rockhaven. Large buildings line either side of the street, suggesting that this block is a warehouse district, which makes sense since the road to Rockhaven is right here. There are no beings in the immediate area.

GM Notes:

You’ve reached Rockhaven!

In many dwarven towns and cities, a uniform block pattern is used. Rockhaven is one such place. Each block is an area that measures 300’ square and is designed for 1 particular task. The block before you is a dedicated warehouse block. It holds four large warehouses, two on each side of the street. The layout of these blocks is repeated over and over, so each warehouse block is laid out the same as any other warehouse block.

There are blocks for living quarters, parks, smith workshops, plazas, forums, and estates. All dwarves know that some cities are laid out in blocks, but not all dwarves have been to or lived in such a place. I’ll leave that up to you how familiar your character is with this set up. Since the pattern does not change, those familiar to such a layout will know their way around a particular block.

Now what?

Virae

Rockhaven sits in a large natural cavern that was modified by the dwarf’s ages ago. The ceiling peaks at over 60’ feet overhead. The sides and far end of the cavern are too far away to see in the darkness. Only an occasionally torch fire can be seen in the town. But it is the noises that tell you that you are not alone here. The sound of metal impacting upon metal is heard off in the distance. A major battle is taking place, but it is still far from your location.

Seeing Rockhaven for the first time Virae can’t help but marvel at the scene, being strangely reminded of her previous home though with little to no craftsmanship involved. Hearing the distant crash of metal Virae can’t help but wonder who or just what is fighting over this town.

Unfamiliar with her surroundings, Virae will wait and see what the others wish to do.

Farian

Making his way through the carved stone, Farian takes his time leading the others through their tainted land. Several chasms are reached and he removes his rope to in his hand and either calls on Oran or Virae to come foreword.

Soon enough the passage dips deeper into to the earth as clash of steel ring far off in the distant as a grid system town is soon found. “It’s been a while since I seen construction such as this.” Eventually moving closer to the large buildings, Farian says, “Looks to be the shipping and warehouse section of town.” Wondering if it follows the same set up as other Dwarven towns, “I think it might be wise to seek out the crafts and forges, It may give us an idea whom is making all that racket up ahead.

[Daraden Stormbeard]

Daraden:

Later, Senoia sigh, “Except for what happened to Lady Aria, this pretty much a perfect day. Good fighting, good drinking, a goodly pile of gold, and a good man to be with. Helps relieve the day’s tension. Been too long since I was last with a man.”

"Aye," Daraden agrees easily. "A strong woman sure can make a day worth living," he adds with a wide grin. He finds it hard to believe her claim of not being with a man in so long but knows better than to comment on it.

"We not be needing all your fur up in here!" Daraden protests and throws Darkfang a heavy blanket, cloak or something for him to use as a bed.

The next day arrives and Daraden takes his place in the marching order. Having been above ground for so much of his life, he enjoys when he can return to the earth and marvel at the craftsmanship of his brothers. The way goes without incident although Darkfang catches a wiff of something that doesn't agree with the wolf. Still nothing presents itself, but Daraden can't help but wonder if they aren't being spied upon.

"I don't know enough about 'em to be certain either way," Daraden says, scratching his beard, "but whatever lies ahead sure ain't to be dull!" He'll be ready to move out and investigate the clamor.

[Oran]

Oran:

The group moves deeper into the earth and towards Rockhaven. Oran leas across the smaller chasms that they come across thanks to his magical ring. There, he’ll drive a piton into the rock wall to support the rope. Soon Rockhaven is reached and it’s not deserted.

“Aye, I know some of this type of construction,” Oran states eyeing the structures. Each block has roads going down it’s middle, so you won’t get lost. If these are warehouses, then I’d wager the forges are close by.”

Oran has his hammer at the ready should trouble break out.

[Senoia]

Senoia:

"Aye," Daraden agrees easily. "A strong woman sure can make a day worth living," he adds with a wide grin. He finds it hard to believe her claim of not being with a man in so long but knows better than to comment on it.

“I like the way you think,” Senoia laughs.

Next day the group is moving deeper into the earth and after circumventing some natural obstacles they reach Rockhaven. It’s a block town as some dwarven towns are.

“Sorry,” Senoia will add, “I’ve never been to one of these before.”

The sounds of combat gets the battlemaiden all excited. She’ll draw her warhammers and be prepared to attack at a moment’s notice.

“Whomever it is, I say we go and kick both of them out of here!”

[Dougan]

Dougan:

“It’s been a while since I seen construction such as this.” Eventually moving closer to the large buildings, Farian says, “Looks to be the shipping and warehouse section of town.” Wondering if it follows the same set up as other Dwarven towns, “I think it might be wise to seek out the crafts and forges, It may give us an idea whom is making all that racket up ahead.

“It’s a little piece of home”, Dougan notes. “I lived in Dengar while I was being trained as a priest and they have construction such as this.”

Dengar is the capital of Rockhome, the home nation of the dwarves.

“There, the city was divided up into districts. Typically warehouses were close to manufacturing centers. Assuming that the case is the same here, then lower income apartments will be in this area too, while the well to do would be further away.”

The sounds of battle are heard and some of the group is eager to engage them.

“I’d advise caution,” Dougan states. “We do not know the nature or the number of the enemy. One might be potential ally, or both could be our enemies. In the latter case it might be wiser to remain hidden and then deal with the victor instead of being caught between two enemy forces.”

[Grondar]

Grondar:

“Of course, Lord Grondar,” Ziana answers. “In fact, we were pressed into making this journey on a moment’s notice. Much of my belongings are back at Fort Fletcher, so I was going to have to make the trip at some point. I will report what has transpired to Baluk.”

"Thank you. I know I can count on you to provide Baluk with any assistance he may need - even if he is too proud to request it."

“No, thank you,” Jenna gratefully responds. “You’ve shown me much of the ways of Berronar Truesilver. You’ve started me a journey of a lifetime. Ziana will guide me further along. Just wait to see how far I’ve come when we next meet!”

"It has been my pleasure to start you on the path of serving our patron and our people. I have no doubt that you will exceed even the great confidence I have in you."

Like the dwarves of old, the group marches tirelessly on, deeper into the caverns and halls that mark the way to Rockhaven. As they draw close to the subterran town, Darkfang gives them warning to go cautiously so their progress slows somewhat. Eventually they reach the gates of the town, which have been badly damaged and can no longer be barred effectively.

As they begin to move into the town, it quickly becomes apparent that this town is designed on a typical dwarven block pattern. Having lived in Rockhome when he was younger, Grondar recognises the pattern instantly and feels more at home than he has in a long time.

The sounds of battle can be heard off in the distance. What to do quickly becomes the topic of conversation and many ideas are put forward.

"While I agree that it is important to secure the forges, I believe we need to deal with the obvious danger, first. I agree with Dougan that some caution is necessary, though it may be necessary to rescue potential allies, as well.

"Farian and Virae, I would like you two to flank around to the right side of the fighting and approach from that side. Find a good viewpoint and try to ascertain the leaders of the various factions. Should we engage, I will be relying on you to neutralize the leader until the rest of us can join you. However, do not reveal yourselves or attack until you see us engage.

"The rest of us will make a direct approach to the outskirts of the battle. Once there, we will attempt to determine the sides and whom - if any - we should assist. Only when we understand who the engaged forces are can we make a decision regarding when and how to involve ourselves.

"Any questions?"

Once any questions are answered, Grondar will send Farian and Virae off on their flanking maneuver, then lead the rest directly toward the battle. Then main group will move as a battle block, with the warriors in front (Oran to the center, with Daraden and Senoia on either side) and the priests behind.

Post Continued:

Rockhaven has been reached, but the small dwarven town is not deserted! The sounds of battle fill the air far off in the distance. It is decided to investigate what is going on here before making any decisions.

To that end, Grondar has Farian and Virae split off to circle around to the right. The rest of the group will move straight ahead towards the battle. Farian and Virae move off and blend into the shadows.

Both groups pass through the warehouse block. The cavern is narrower here and there are no other blocks to the right or left of this one. However, it the cavern grows much wider in the next block.

The block directly in front of the warehouse block is another warehouse block. But there are blocks to either side and both of these are forge blocks. No activity is noticed in either forge at this time.

The warehouse block gives way to a main street. This block has buildings for stores and shops along the sides with the middle mostly open. This is to allow for high traffic, or the area can be used for more vendors to set up shop.

On either side of the main street is a tenement block. These are low-income apartments. Small and tightly packed together. Each block is three stories high.

Finally the dwarves reach the site of the battle. The main street block gives way to a large open plaza. There is a raised area in the center where sometimes statues are placed or a fountain.

As the explorers draw closer you begin to see just who is fighting. There are only a few lit torches here and there, so illumination is spotty at beast.

One fraction of the battle is large creatures that wear a tattered blue surcoat over their black leather armor. There is a crude drawing on their chest that might be a creature of some kind. This creature is slashed out with swath of red paint. Once close enough you can realize that these creatures are hobgoblins!

Virae instantly recognizes the other force as she’s seen them before. They are dwarven in stature, but have skin the color of an ice-covered lake. Their hair is a sickly pale yellow to tan in color and their eyes lack pupils. They are derro, another type of Underdark Dwarf.

The two sides are locked in a heated battle. Both sides number close to 100 members.

The hobgoblins are more organized in their attacks. Swords and spears are their weapons of choice.

The derro fight with a multitude of weapons and their tactics seem confusing at first. But it’s clear that their goal is to wound and then separate an enemy from their weapons. Then they swarm that enemy, crippling them and rendering them unable to fight. They prefer to wound and hurt than to simply kill.

The derro weapons range from light crossbows, to clubs and spears. A special weapon of theirs is the hook-fauchard, a pole arm with a stabbing point and a hook on it. Typically, the weapon is thrust into the enemy and then they are hooked on the pull back pulling the victim off balance.

As you watch, it’s clear just who the leaders in the battle are as they have an easier time in taking out the enemy. There are about half a dozen such skilled fighters on each side whose skill is superior to regular soldiers.

GM Notes:

Most dwarves hate Derro, much like Duergar, and the feelings are mutual.

Virae can fly overhead during her scouting and even take a position on the building tops.

Now what?

[Grondar]

Grondar:

Once Virae and Farian disappear into the shadows, Grondar and the others move forward toward the sounds of combat. They pass through the warehouse block into another warehouse block as the cavern widens. Looking to either side down the gridded streets, Grondar notes that the forge blocks appear deserted.

Good, he thinks. One less thing to worry about. Even though he's a priest without particular skill in the crafts, still the forge is a part of who he is.

Continuing on, they pass through a main commercial block. Numerous shops and businesses can be seen around the fringes, with an open market area in the middle - now deserted.

Reaching the edge of the market, they look out over a large plaza. In the distance, the combatants can be seen, fighting in the plaza. Grondar calls a halt and peers out towards the warring sides, attempting to determine the opponents. It takes some time and moving about for a good angle, but eventually the two participants in the battle are determined to be hobgoblins and derro! Pfah! Filth, both of them.

"I don't know about the rest of you, but I think we should let them wipe each other out. If any are left, we can finish the job. Dougan, I'd like you and Oran to stay here. Daraden, Senoia and I will loop around to the left. That will allow us to hit the survivors from three sides. Wait until you see us move forward to attack."

If there are no questions, Grondar, Daraden and Senoia will begin to work their way around to the left flank, Daraden and Darkfang in the lead. They'll stay just off the plaza so as not to alert the combatants to their presence. If at any time, one side is eliminated from the battle, Grondar will cast a quick Prayer on his group, then send them charging into battle with himself just steps behind.

[Oran]

Oran:

Oran is on guard as the group moves deeper into Rockhaven. The town appears deserted for the most part, except for the battle going on up ahead. The forges are unattended.

“This might just be a battle site,” Oran will remark. “The forges are not in use and there’s no one around. No women, no children, although they could be in hiding.”

Upon reaching the center of town the source of the conflict is discovered. It is a struggle between hobgoblins and derro! Oran’s never seen a derro before, but he knows hobgoblins.

“Don’t underestimate hobgoblins,” Oran says, “thinking that they are much the same as goblins. They are taller then men and are very organized when it comes to military conflicts. These hobgoblins are all from the same tribe and they’ll have a battle standard somewhere around here.”

"I don't know about the rest of you, but I think we should let them wipe each other out. If any are left, we can finish the job. Dougan, I'd like you and Oran to stay here. Daraden, Senoia and I will loop around to the left. That will allow us to hit the survivors from three sides. Wait until you see us move forward to attack."

“Sound strategy to me,” Oran states. He’ll eye the conflict looking for the more powerful warriors of the bunch. Those will be his targets when we attack. Oran will throw his Firehammer until some one closes for hand to hand combat.

[Senoia]

Senoia:

Senoia eagerly eyes the conflict before here.

“Now this is more like it! This is my kind of scrap! That’s’ a derro? Creepy looking suckers!”

Senoia is all ready to charge into the fray when she’s held back.

"I don't know about the rest of you, but I think we should let them wipe each other out. If any are left, we can finish the job. Dougan, I'd like you and Oran to stay here. Daraden, Senoia and I will loop around to the left. That will allow us to hit the survivors from three sides. Wait until you see us move forward to attack."

“It’s against my principles, but I guess if that’s the way you want to play it.”

Once in their new position, Senoia will be more than ready to charge when the command is given. Until then she’ll watch the battle unfold, identifying the most dangerous of the enemy.

[Dougan]

Dougan:

Dougan makes his way through Rockhaven, admiring the dwarven engineering skill. The forges are quiet, but the current battle might have something to do with that. But there is no light coming from them and dwarves would never let their forges go cold without good reason.

“This might just be a battle site,” Oran will remark. “The forges are not in use and there’s no one around. No women, no children, although they could be in hiding.”

“Aye,” Dougan agrees, “that thought crossed my mind as well. Perhaps there is just an occupation force here?”

Continuing on we come across a battle between derro and hobgoblins. Oran offers his opinion on hobgoblins and it mostly matches what Dougan has heard before.

“Now this is more like it! This is my kind of scrap! That’s’ a derro? Creepy looking suckers!”

“Yes, those are derro. They are unlike any dwarf that we know. It is said that their eyesight is very poor and that they function more by hearing then by seeing. Light or darkness makes no difference to either side in this battle.”

"I don't know about the rest of you, but I think we should let them wipe each other out. If any are left, we can finish the job. Dougan, I'd like you and Oran to stay here. Daraden, Senoia and I will loop around to the left. That will allow us to hit the survivors from three sides. Wait until you see us move forward to attack."

Dougan nods in agreement with this particular strategy.

“We should try to take a prisoner or two,” Dougan suggests. “Someone we can question to find out just what is going on here. Moradin's blessing on us all!”

Dougan stays near Oran, off to the side and behind him. He won’t get in the warriors way in this battle.

Farian

“Mmmm, Two versus a leader whom is probably surrounded by body guards of some stature not to mention, by the sounds of it an army between them and us. And I thought this was going to be dull….”

“Sometimes I wonder if I should have learned working the forges like me pappy.” He says gruffly as he activates his ring and disappears from sight.

Taking in the view of the battle, Farian can’t help but grumble to himself, “Take care of the leaders, he says. I’m counting on you he says. Only an army of 300 versus us, That one granite for brains he does….” Shaking his invisible head.

Farian will watch and learn how the two groups fight, seeing if there are any opening in their fighting style.

[Virae]

Virae

“And if they see us first?” she says evenly. “We may have to make a run for it.” Looking down at Farian. “He is right, two thieves cut of from their party wouldn’t last long. There is a possibility you will not have our eyes or weapons to aid you…”

Unfolding her feather wings Virae takes to the air keeping close to the buildings, (finding the tallest most secured one) Virae sets down and scans the site of the battle, at first dust and mass bodies are seen but then it becomes more into focus. With just a few moments time her eyes widen seeing Derro, whom she had has encounter before. Though the other group is much more unfamiliar to her.

Virae has no choice but to watch and wait for the others to act…

If they do come out of their holes, Virae will wait till they are about half way to their destination and fly out over head, She will cast a sleep spell to the centre of the enemy group, then draw her short swords.

[Daraden Stormbeard]

Daraden:

"Rabble really!" Daraden says, spitting for emphasis. He's handled a few hobgoblins but this bunch looks organized. A good leader will do that though. He soon learns the other group is derro and finds he doesn't have quite enough spit for all these bottom feeders.

"I don't know about the rest of you, but I think we should let them wipe each other out. If any are left, we can finish the job. Dougan, I'd like you and Oran to stay here. Daraden, Senoia and I will loop around to the left. That will allow us to hit the survivors from three sides. Wait until you see us move forward to attack."

"Aye, nothing better for the lot of 'em," Daraden agrees. Grondar wants to circle around though, so he instructs Darkfang and heads out, leading the trio. He'll be watchful for no stragglers or rouge-types jump them on their way to finding a good seat to watch the action from.

Post Continued:

Rockhaven has been reached, but the dwarves and their mysterious winged ally discover that it is a battle zone as a force of derro is engaging hobgoblins. The main battle is taking place in the town’s plaza, but some of it spills out into the adjacent blocks. The Dwarves have split into three groups to encircle the battle zone.

Farian and Virae are one group and they are circling in from the east side. Farian is invisible thanks to his ring, while Virae flew overhead taking perch on the top of an apartment building. Oran and Dougan remain where they are, as far as the main group is concerned, while Grondar, Daraden, and Senoia circle off to the western flank. Once they are in position, the dwarves wait for the battle to be decided.

The battle rages fiercely with both sides seeking to eliminate the other. The derro strategy seemingly unorganized strategy works for a time, but their numbers begin to go down. The derro prefer to leave their enemies alive, but crippled so that they can toy with them later. The hobgoblins simply slay the derro outright. In time the battlefield becomes littered with dead derro and dead and dying hobgoblins.

After fifteen more minutes of fighting, it becomes clear that the derro will be defeated. The few survivors huddle together for protection and then finally make a break for it. They dash to the west, towards the concealed positions of Grondar’s group!

Some of the hobgoblins are chasing them, while others hold their positions on the battlefield.

I figured I’d give you guys a chance to formalize your strategies a bit further than you could before. Here’s the layout for a Plaza Block.

There’s about 10 derro remaining and about 20 hobgoblin’s, although there are many wounded and crippled hobgoblins lying on the ground. Around 15 of the hobgoblins will pursue the derro towards Grondar’s position, while the others remain behind.

I’ll upload all the layouts for the city blocks to the map section of the private area for everyone’s reference ASAP.

VIrae will hold action till she sees how the other group reacts.

If it appears Grondar will attack the group, Virae will focus on the remaining group fo hobgoblins, if they go to their allies she will pelt them with arrows from the roof top.

Seeing the only that 5 Hobgoblins remain, Farian will creep closer to them(move silently) if it becomes apparent which Hobgoblin is the leader ( other referring to him or idolizing him) farian will wait til the other groups are engaged and their attention is drawn that way, and bury his war hammer in the leader’s back.

[Daraden Stormbeard]

Daraden:

Grondar:

“Who said secure… Weapons give you an idea who you are dealing with.” He says evenly looking at the dwarven priest. “Potential Allies? In a city that has been lost for a generation or two? You would be hard pressed to find such a feat.”

"I agree that it is unlikely, it is also true that we have found allies in unlikely places," Grondar says with a meaningful glance at Virae.

Grondar waits patiently as Farian grumbles and Virae complains. "Just do the best that you can, my friends. I know from experience that you are both clever and resourceful. If things get dicey, return and rejoin us here."

"That's good information to have, Oran. Thanks," Grondar replies. "Let's keep an eye out for that standard," he says to everyone.

“It’s against my principles, but I guess if that’s the way you want to play it.”

"Thank you, Senoia. I'd rather not risk our lives unneccessarily. Still, I'm sure you'll get a chance to slake your battle-lust soon enough."

“We should try to take a prisoner or two,” Dougan suggests. “Someone we can question to find out just what is going on here. Moradin's blessing on us all!”

"A good idea, Dougan. Sounds like a good use for Hold Person."

Moving into position on the west side of the plaza, Grondar and his group hold their position as the battle rages. The fighting is fierce for several minutes, but it soon becomes apparent that the hobgoblins have the edge due to their superior discipline. Suddenly, the derro break off and flea toward Grondar's position. Seeing this, Grondar asks his companions, "Okay, everyone ready? We'll step out and block their way just before they reach us. Standard 'V' formation: Daraden, you and Darkfang on the right; Senoia, you take the left. I'll stay back a couple steps in the center. "

Grondar cast Prayer over the small group, then peeks around the corner. "Now!" he says when the derro are too close to turn away. "Cut them down." Grondar takes his place behind and between the others, crossbow raised and firing.

[Oran]

Oran:

Oran watches stoically as the battle unfolds. He suspects that the hobgoblins will be the victors as they are more disciplined in their strategies. So Oran pays more attention to the hobgoblins trying to identify their most powerful warriors.

Finally the battle ends and the remaining derro flee. Some of the hobgoblins give chase, but a small group stays behind.

“Those must be the leaders,” Oran whispers to Dougan. “Typically only low boots are sent after a retreating enemy. Let’s even up the odds a little bit.”

Oran will throw his hammer into the pack of hobgob leaders, hopefully taking one of them out. Once his hammer returns, he’ll rush towards the larger group of hobgoblins yelling a battle cry, hoping to lure then away from the derro and Grondar’s group.

[Senoia]

Senoia:

"Thank you, Senoia. I'd rather not risk our lives unnecessarily. Still, I'm sure you'll get a chance to slake your battle-lust soon enough."

“Battle lust?” Senoia repeats. “Nay, Grondar, it is the joy of battle that I seek.”

"So what ye say?" Daraden whispers to Grondar through clenched teeth. "We take 'em or let 'em run past?" Daraden will prepare for either answer, either to remain quiet and keep Darkfang under control or prepare to let loose his wolf companion as well as his own axes.

“Take’em down!” Senoia will say. “If we let anyone get away, there is the chance they will return with a larger force! No survivors, if you ask me.”

"Okay, everyone ready? We'll step out and block their way just before they reach us. Standard 'V' formation: Daraden, you and Darkfang on the right; Senoia, you take the left. I'll stay back a couple steps in the center. "

“Oh, I be ready all right! Ready to bash heads!”

Grondar casts Prayer over the small group, then peeks around the corner. "Now!" he says when the derro are too close to turn away. "Cut them down." Grondar takes his place behind and between the others, crossbow raised and firing.

Senoia will close the distance between herself and the closest derro. She’ll give the degenerate Underdark creatures a warm welcome with her hammers!

[Dougan]

Dougan:

"A good idea, Dougan. Sounds like a good use for Hold Person."

Dougan nods his head in agreement. “Aye, if only I had the foresight to pray for one this day.”

"Those must be the leaders," Oran whispers to Dougan. "Typically only low boots are sent after a retreating enemy. Let's even up the odds a little bit."

Dougan is unsure at just what he is getting at, but says nothing. Once seeing that he plans to intercept the hobgoblins that are in pursuit, he’ll ready his warhammer and shield and join Oran’s charge.
