Hammerfall #12
Hammerfall #12
Hammerfall #12
In the aftermath of the earthquake, the dwarves and their new companion Virae are attempting to climb back up the shaft to the main floor of the duergar fortress. Several options are suggested, but it is decided that Virae fly up the shaft and see if the crane that raised and lowered supplies to this level is still functional. The group does possess some climbing rope, but it doesn’t have enough to stretch all the way to the top of the shaft, a distance of over 500’.
Virae changes her form into a duergar, albeit one with wings. She leaps into the air and begins to fly up the shaft. Once at the top, Virae can see that the trap door that concealed the shaft from above has broken as well. However, some sixty feet overhead the outline of a second trap door can be plainly seen in the ceiling.
There is much confusion at the top of the shaft. There are many wounded duergar and others that were outright killed. None of them bother Virae; they are all too concerned with their own safety to present a challenge. Most of them are fleeing the area.
Stairs are located that lead up to the crane room. The crane room is deserted. The vast crane fills up most of the chamber. It is constructed of thick timbers reinforced with heavy iron bands. There is a series of gears that work the crane. Based on the size of the gears, as many as four beings can raise and lower the crane. A large drum holds a wire and at the end of the wire is the ore bucket.
Virae takes in the device for a few minutes, trying to ascertain how it functions. One large lever locks the gears mechanism in place. Pull that lever and the ore bucket will drop. However, it is difficult to move the lever and then physically operate the main gear at the same time. Virae is force to adopt her human form to carry out the task. With one hand on the gear she kicks the lever with her foot. The drum is then free and Virae can walk the gear in a large circle. This in turn causes the ore bucket to lower down the shaft.
The ore bucket forces its way through the trap door and begins the long descent down the shaft. It reaches the bottom some five minutes later.
Those at the bottom can see the bucket coming down long before it touches bottom. The bucket isn’t that large. One person could fit inside it comfortably; two can fit provided they sit on the edge of the bucket.
Going back up is slow as the mechanism was designed to have multiple beings operate it. Once the first dwarves are up the shaft, the process goes much faster. By the end of the hour, everyone is up the shaft!
By that time the dwarves depart the crane room, the grand hall below is now deserted. The duergar present have long since fled. The duergar fortress is eerily quiet. The journey back to Mountain Lake is easily made. While there is damage from the earth tremor, there were no serious obstacles to overcome.

GM Notes
GM Notes:
You can return to Mountain Lake or search the ground level of the fortress should you so desire. There’s been no sign of Rat thus far.
The town of Mountain Lake itself took only minor damage from the earthquake. Nothing that can’t be repaired.
Now what?

Oran
Oran:
The winged woman comes through with her task and the ore bucket arrives!
“So who is to go first?” Oran wonders. “You’re going to need muscle to work this thing and I’m guessing that I’m the strongest here so I should take the first trip, with your approval of course Lord Grondar.”
Once Oran is up at the crane, he’ll help raise and lower the bucket until everyone is out. With that task completed, it’s time to make our way back to the surface. However, Oran pauses for a moment.
“Lord Grondar, it might behoove us to at least check out the rest of the fortress before leaving. Just in case those Underdark runts left any surprises behind that would trouble the good folk of Mountain Lake after we’re gone. It shouldn’t take long.”

Senoia
Senoia:
Much to Senoia’s surprise, the mouthy winged woman comes through! Who would have believed it!
The ore bucket isn’t large. Only one of us can fit inside at a time, two provided they sit on the edge.
“Uhm, if’n it’s all the same to rest of you, I’d rather go up alone.”
Senoia will curl up inside the ore bucket and keep her eyes closed during the long trip back up the shaft.
“I hate bein’ at the end of a rope!” She complains.
Once that ordeal is over with, Senoia will help raise the others up. She’s all ready to return to Mountain Lake for some food and a few dozen ales when Oran makes an interesting suggestion.

“Aye!” Senoia enthusiastically agrees. “Let us make sure that this fire is out before moving on to Hammerfall! That makes sense to me.”

I bring you the joy of battle!
Dougan
Dougan:
“Thank Moradin!” Dougan praises once safely out of the shaft.
As the group makes its way back to Mountain Lake, Oran suggests exploring the rest of the fortress first and Senoia agrees. Such a think makes sense, but Dougan will choose to go back to Mountain Lake should the group split up.
At some point, he’ll approach Grondar. “Lord Grondar, it saddens me to report that Brother Clavis took his own life. When the tremors hit, the chamber floor split and lava began to flow in. I thought was behind me on the way to the exit, but instead he leaped into the lava. I fear that he could not bear the knowledge of what he had done while under the thrall of the Iron Orb.”
“But before this, he said that the Iron Orb spoke to him and commanded him to do the things he had done. I think the Orb has an intelligence of it’s own and this intelligence comes from the form of an eye tyrant, or a beholder as they are more commonly known. The powers the orb unleashed against both you and poor Opal seem to support this theory.”
Once back in Mountain Lake, a weary Dougan will clean up before settling in for a fine meal. Later he’ll pray to Moradin for the safe passage of all those good dwarves killed today and that Brother Clavis found the peace he so desperately sought.

Daraden:
"Looks like we be riding up together," Daraden tells Darkfang as they wait for the bucket to return after taking Oran up. He notes that Senoia wishes to ride up by herself, but says nothing. Although it may take a bit longer, it is safer to just take one of them at a time. However, the hunter doesn't want to let his wolf companion ride up alone in case something distracts the wolf and causes him to do something foolish.

"I agree," Daraden joins in. "No sense in leaving anything behind that could hurt or harm anyone else." He'll have Darkfang remain alert as they explore. He doesn't anticipate trouble but something might be scared or desperate enough to bother them.

When the Hammer Falls
Grondar:
The waiting at the bottom of the pit takes a while, but eventually they see the bucket descending, causing Grondar to smile; at least the shapechanging female - is she really a female? - didn't let them down this time.
"Senoia, you can go next. The rest of us will follow."
In not too long a time, they all reach the top of the shaft. The subject turns to what to do next.
"A beholder, eh? You bear disturbing tidings, but the knowledge may yet help us in the long run. Thank you."
Once they have determined who, if any, are returning to Mountain Lake, Grondar leads the rest toward the gates of the fortress. Of course, Farian will be in charge of detecting any obstacles along the way.
Grondar looks at the woman for a moment a frown creasing his already-craggy features. "And what manner of woman be you?" He cannot help wondering if they have taken a viper into their midst. Her shapeshifting talent seems rather unnatural, and makes it hard to know who she really is...Virae wrote:“I doubt it. There is nothing magical about them.” She says easily as she gets ready to take to the air, but most strangely Oran brushes them off. So be it. Within moments Virae watches her eyes wide as they clear the lava flow.
"We found her in the room with the Iron Golem and Orb. She claimed to have come there quite by accident."Senoia wrote:“She has a sharp tongue, that one does,” Senoia notes. “I don’t trust her or anyone who uses magic like that. Who is she and where did she come from?”
"Well, that - at least - is good news," Grondar replies. "Thank you."Oran wrote:“The lava claimed the Iron Warrior,” Oran reports. “It’ll trouble us no more.”

Virae
Flying up to the bucket proves easy enough as she lands and looks about for Duegar. Making her wings disappear Virae, notices the Duegar have been rocked by the earthquake as well, many of which who care only for themselves to pay her any mind. Soon finding the Controls for the buckets she tries managing in her duegar form but to no avail. ‘Dunno how they do it, but then must be nice to know when its flooding.’ she says as she reverts back to her human form and kicks the controls loose and begins lowering the bucket with the controls.
Making sure there is a dwarf inside she raises them up one at a time. About half way through she can’t help but notice the wieght of the dwarf. “You need to lay off the ale…” She says to herself as she raises the bucket and does so again and again.
“I might be able to help your way finder, Farian is it? Find traps within the fortress.” she says evenly looking at the others. Talia and I made a adequate team especially when it came to magical traps.”
Virae will help in anyway she can when going into the fortress.
“A woman taller then yourself.” she says with a smirk as she looks down at Grondar. “One with abilities and traits that can be a boon or a curse depending on others views. Otherwise I am merely a woman trying to do right from her past wrongs.” she says as she rests her hands on the hilts on her weapons.Grondar looks at the woman for a moment a frown creasing his already-craggy features. Farian
“There aint no other way out here, except up!” he says finally as he gives up in frustration.
He watches at the winged woman fly up and lower the bucket. “Well, Ill be a bearded gnome.” he says, “Think we should keep her around more often. Wonder how she does that?” he asks no one in particular.
Getting in the bucket Farian relaxes smoking his pipe as he’s raised up as he reaches the mouth of the bucket, “What be taking ya so long, my beard be going gray.” he says as he takes a last puff n his pipe and puts it away. Moving off he will check out the immediate area and make sure it is safe then return and be ready to look for traps.

The dwarves have safely reached the top of the shaft. Looking down below you can see the lava rises some of the way up the debris pile at the bottom, but it eventually stops climbing high and begins to recede. As more dwarves reached the top of the shaft there were more hands to operate the crane and the travel time became faster and faster. The crane was designed to be operated by as many as five dwarves.
The group now has the choice or retracing their steps through the mines or exploring this level of the duergar fortress. Many fear that the duergar might continue to harass the folk of Mountain Lake, so most of the group decides to explore further. Mayor Arlos and Lieutenant Lotha lead the way back to Mountain Lake, while the rest of the group goes back into the fortress.
Huge double doors fifty foot high like most you’ve encountered thus far lead deeper into the fortress. The chambers beyond are all similar in this regard. They have the bodies of slain duergar on the floor, along with debris generated by the Earthquake. The ceiling has given away in place due to the stress. The floor is solid, so there is little fear of it giving way under your feet.
The first chamber you come to is filled with sleeping mats. So many mats that only a narrow path leads across the room. The next chamber is much the same, filled with sleeping area for over 100 duergar.
Next comes a room that must have been used as a crude stable. The bodies of several huge spiders are found! These creatures are known as Steeders, a type of mount used by duergar. Based on the evidence on hand there must be have been more of them, but they fled during the earthquake. The ones still here are quite dead.
A series of heavily damaged chambers come next. Most of these were already in poor shape before the earthquake and now are much worse. The first of these rooms was another used as quarters, although this one only has about twenty mats with personal affects nearby.
The next chamber seems to have been used as a training area. Racks of poor quality weapons line the walls.
An area used for food storage is next. Large barrels line the walls of the chamber. Most have their lids off and inside are what appear to be pieces of dried mushrooms and other fungi. Several of the barrels hold the duergar equivalent of ale. An adjacent chamber is a fungi farm, with numerous types growing here. Most of you will not that these are edible and while the taste is questionable, they are good for you.
The last two chambers of the fortress appear to have been quarters for more important individuals. The first room has only two sleeping mats along with their gear. The second chamber is actually furnished! It has a wooden bed, a mattress, a small table and chair, and altar made of black, finely polished volcanic stone. A locked chest sits at the foot of the bed.
The last area of interest lies at the back of these chambers and off the main connecting hallway. There is a vast fifty-foot high passage that leads deeper into the earth. Trackers can tell that all the footprints seem to lead away down this passage. Those skilled in stonework will note that this passage had collapsed in the distant past and had been cleared away. New debris fills the passage and the walls and ceiling do not seem all that sturdy. Best guess would seem to indicate that this passage leads deeper into the earth and towards where the duergar came from.
The fortress seems to be currently devoid of duergar, at least ones still alive. You can safely retrace your steps back through the mines and reach Mountain Lake.

Oran:
Oran will then climb into the bucket and await the trip up the shaft. Once at the top, Oran will take over operating the drum that raises and lowers the bucket. With his enhanced strength, the task is much easier. Senoia has a much quicker trip.
However the fortress is now empty. The duergar who survived the earthquake have fled, seemingly deeper into the earth through a large passage in the back of the fortress.
“The stone here is unstable,” Oran notes. “Ready to collapse again.”
Taking his Firehammer in hand, Oran will suggest, “I say that we bring this all down again to protect the folks of Mountain Lake. You all will want to move back. Hard to say just how much of this will collapse with my persuader.”
If Lord Grondar agrees, Oran will move back as far as he safely can and then throw his Firehammer at the weakened ceiling and walls in hopes of causing them to collapse.
Once back in Mountain Lake, Oran will eat and drink heartily. Afterwards, he’ll retire to his room to clean his armor while enjoying his pipe.
“I’ve a belt given to me by Drakkimor,” Oran explains. “He said it makes me as strong as a frost giant, so that is why I assumed I was the strongest here.”Grondar wrote:"I'm not sure whether your strength exceeds mine, Oran, but you're welcome to go first. Farian, please go with him and have a look around for anything unexpected.”

No enemies are found, just what they left behind. Bedding, some poor quality weapons, and other gear.
“Hmph! These weapons were not forged by any real dwarf!”
Back in town Senoia will have her fill of food and ale. If we’re going to spend the night here, she’ll step up to Daraden.
“It was a full day we had. You’d be interested in making it a full night as well?”
“Can we put her back?” Senoia wonders aloud.Grondar wrote:"We found her in the room with the Iron Golem and Orb. She claimed to have come there quite by accident."
“Fine with me,” Senoia bitingly answers. It’s clear that she’s not looking forward to the long trip up the high shaft.Grondar wrote:"I'm not sure whether your strength exceeds mine, Oran, but you're welcome to go first. Farian, please go with him and have a look around for anything unexpected.
"Senoia, you can go next. The rest of us will follow."
“I’m not missing this for anything!” Senoia announces her usual enthusiasm returning.Grondar wrote:"It seems we are all in agreement. Yes, we should explore the duergar fortress before we leave. However, some of you may feel a need to return quickly to Mountain Lake to check on matters there. If so, either Mayor Arlos or Brother Dougan should lead that group, though I think at least two - and preferably three - should go together due to the dangers present between here and there. One person alone is too great a risk."

“Hmph! These weapons were not forged by any real dwarf!”
“Now perhaps we can find some rewards for our efforts!” Senoia says excitedly while rubbing her hands together. “What’s inside the chest?”The last two chambers of the fortress appear to have been quarters for more important individuals. The first room has only two sleeping mats along with their gear. The second chamber is actually furnished! It has a wooden bed, a mattress, a small table and chair, and altar made of black, finely polished volcanic stone. A locked chest sits at the foot of the bed.

Dougan
Dougan:
The rest of the fortress seems to have been abandoned. A passage leading deeper into the earth is found and it’s unstable.
“Sealing this up once more does seem prudent,” Dougan will agree.
Upon returning to Mountain Lake, Dougan will retire to his chamber to remove his armor and clean up. He’ll say several prayers for the fallen before joining the others in the common room for food and ale. He is curious as to what Lord Grondar intends to do next.
“I think I will accompany you, Lord Grondar. I would be shirking my duty to the Soul Forger if I allowed the possible of harm coming to his children by not going.”Grondar wrote:"It seems we are all in agreement. “I will seek the same from Moradin,” Dougan agrees. “Yes, the knowledge might help us in future encounters. Having knowledge of one’s enemy is always helpful.”Grondar wrote:"That is a most grievous loss, Brother Dougan. I shall ask the Revered Mother to look after his spirit.
"A beholder, eh? You bear disturbing tidings, but the knowledge may yet help us in the long run. Thank you."

Farian
Looking about as he comes up the bucket Farian can’t help but say, “Not the most comfortable way to travel,” he says as he steps on sold ground again, “But it beats a lava bath.” Moving off Farian will then inspect the immediate area and await the others.
Once back at the Mountain Lake Farian will pull out his pipe and eat heartily of the food. Looking to Grondar, “How will be proceeding from here?” he says letting out a large ring of smoke.

Oran will then climb into the bucket and await the trip up the shaft. Once at the top, Oran will take over operating the drum that raises and lowers the bucket. With his enhanced strength, the task is much easier. Senoia has a much quicker trip
“Thanks Oran, Can’t say how much of that I could take.” She says evenly as she looks at the dwarf. ‘Want me to give you a hand or watch your back?” she asks.
“Hmph! These weapons were not forged by any real dwarf!”
“How can you tell the difference, Senoia?” Virae asks curiously. “I can tell Duegar from elf, but how can one tell dwarven made from dwarven made.” She says hoping not to offend the dwarf.
“Now perhaps we can find some rewards for our efforts!” Senoia says excitedly while rubbing her hands together. “What’s inside the chest?”
“I wouldn’t be touching that just yet, Duegar have a habit of trapping chests inside as well as outside. A poison dart would not be a good way to end this day.”
Virae will check the chest for any traps that maybe about.

Oran:
“I can handle it, lass,” Oran answers easily. “Keep an eye on things while I bring Senoia up.”

Senoia:
“It’s a subtle thing,” Senoia answers. “Many in Clan Redrock are weaponsmiths and you can’t help but pick up some of the craft. Who ever made this didn’t temper the metal enough. It seems sturdy enough at first glance, but will become weak and brittle the more it is used in battle. Then it’ll break on you, probably when you need it the most.”
“True dwarven quality comes through patience and craftsmanship. It might take longer, but you’ll have a weapon that’ll last a lifetime.”

Daraden Stormbeard
Daraden:
Exploring the fortress turns out to be quite dull. "Figures, room after room of nothing but trash," Daraden grumbles. He was hoping for something, maybe a few gold or silver coins, a trinket, anything worth while. When they get to the private chambers, things look a little more hopeful especially upon spying the locked chest. Daraden is content to let those with skill work on the chest while he and Darkfang guard.
Back in town Senoia will have her fill of food and ale. If we’re going to spend the night here, she’ll step up to Daraden.
“It was a full day we had. You’d be interested in making it a full night as well?”
Enjoying the food and ale, Daraden finds himself approached by Senoia a bit later on. Gazing at her, tankard in hand while his other runs through his beard, he listens to her question. Smiling, he replies, "Aye, now only a fool would pass up such as you've asked!"

When the Hammer Falls
Grondar:
The group spends a significant amount of time searching the duergar fortress, only to find it empty. As far as they can tell, all of the duergar were either killed or fled. Cowards. They do find what appears to be an altar, within the best room of the fortress. Of course, most of the group's attention is drawn to the chest at the foot of the bed.
While the others deal with the chest, Grondar goes to inspect the altar. He attempts to determine if it contains any deific energy. If so, he will attempt to destroy it with TruthGiver, as the duergar dieties are not friendly with the dwarven gods.
Eventually, they find a passage that runs deeper into the earth. Tracks seem to indicate that many of the duergar fled this way, but now it is blocked by rubble.
Once all is finished here, they return to Mountain Lake. Grondar will seek out Mayor Arlos and fill him in on their experiences since the groups parted ways. Afterward, he'll minister to any in need of healing or spiritual guidance. Only when that is done will he join the others for food and drink.
"Frost giant, ya say?! Well, that beats my enchanted gauntlets, which are supposed to make me about as strong as an ogre."Oran wrote:“I’ve a belt given to me by Drakkimor,” Oran explains. “He said it makes me as strong as a frost giant, so that is why I assumed I was the strongest here.”
"Hmph!" Grondar snorts. Whatever she may be - and he's not entirely sure he trusts this strange woman - she has a sense of humor.Virae wrote:“A woman taller then yourself.” she says with a smirk as she looks down at Grondar. “One with abilities and traits that can be a boon or a curse depending on others views. Otherwise I am merely a woman trying to do right from her past wrongs.” she says as she rests her hands on the hilts on her weapons.
Grondar is puzzled by the woman's temperament, but makes no comment on it. After all, women are creatures of mystery among every race - or so he's heard.Senoia wrote:“Fine with me,” Senoia bitingly answers. It’s clear that she’s not looking forward to the long trip up the high shaft.
"No doubt you will be, friend Farian," Grondar replies with a smirk. "And yes, I do think we'll keep her around." Of course, that just might be because he had been told more than once that the best kind of enemy was one that was within reach of your mace...Farian wrote:He watches at the winged woman fly up and lower the bucket. “Well, Ill be a bearded gnome.” he says, “Think we should keep her around more often. Wonder how she does that?” he asks no one in particular.
"Good to have you, brother Dougan. Your company and counsel are always welcome."Dougan wrote:“I think I will accompany you, Lord Grondar. I would be shirking my duty to the Soul Forger if I allowed the possible of harm coming to his children by not going.”

Noting the chest, Grondar looks over toward Farian. "I believe this is your area of expertise, Farian." Since Virae appears to also be inspecting the chest with a professional eye, Grondar says to her, "If you have the skills, Virae, feel free to assist Farian in this matter."Virae wrote:“I wouldn’t be touching that just yet, Duegar have a habit of trapping chests inside as well as outside. "Just what I was thinking, Oran. The harder we make it for them to return, the better. Have at!" Grondar will back away, herding the others before him to allow Oran room to work.Oran wrote:Taking his Firehammer in hand, Oran will suggest, “I say that we bring this all down again to protect the folks of Mountain Lake. You all will want to move back. Hard to say just how much of this will collapse with my persuader.”

"An excellent question, my friend," Grondar replies. Rising, he addresses the assembled group. "First off, I think we should get a good night's sleep here in Mountain Lake. We deserve that much, at the very least. Come morning, I intend to head out in search of Aria. I will not abandon her to the will of that Orb, or beholder, or whatever it is. I trust you will accompany me?" He knows that some of his new friends have responsibilities here in Mountain Lake, so he will not be surprised if they choose to stay behind.Farian wrote:Once back at the Mountain Lake Farian will pull out his pipe and eat heartily of the food. Post Continued:
The dwarves investigate the rest of the Duergar Fortress. Clearly, the fortress took a great deal of damage in the distant past. Many of the chambers were still being cleared out and made ready for use even before the earthquake hit. They are in even worse shape since the recent tremors. It would take many months for the fortress to be made useable once more.
While exploring, the dwarves find a few chambers of interest. Those who take the time to rummage through the gear and belongings of fallen duergar will find a few coins on each Underdark Dwarf. Things get really interesting when you come to the chamber that holds only two bedrolls. These belonged to the bodyguards of the high priest himself and they had coins among them. Hidden amongst their belongings are 1,337 gold coins and 214 silver coins.
The next chamber is that of the former High Priest of Deep Duerra. A chest locked chest is found at the foot of his bed. Virae examines the chest and determines that there is a poisoned needle in the lock. She tries to remove the needle, but is not successful.
At Grondar’s request, Farian also examines the chest. He too spots the poisoned needle, but also notices a small sigil on the chest itself! The chest is Fire Trapped! Farian goes to work. First he removes the poisoned needle and then negates the Fire Trap. The chest easily and harmlessly opens.
The chest is filled with sacks of coins! There are three sacks of gold coins and five sacks of silver coins. Each sack most like has several thousand coins in it!
Amongst the coin bags are two bags of gems. The larger bag holds thirty-two pieces of Jet. The other bag has ten fire opals.
The altar is indeed dedicated to Deep Duerra and Grondar smashes it with TruthGiver.
Continuing on, the group locates a large passage leading deeper into the earth. Most likely it leads to the realm where the Duergar came from. It shows signs of having collapsed in the past and the recent Earthquake has further weakened it. The walls and ceiling do not seem stable.
Oran suggests using his Firehammer to bring it down and Grondar agrees. After moving safely back, Oran flings his Firehammer into the walls and ceiling of the passage. Upon the fourth hit, the stone gives way and it collapses! Once the dust settles the passage is sealed off once more.

That business complete, the group returns to Mountain Lake. There is some visible damage from the earthquake, but nothing that can’t be repaired. There are some injuries; so priestly healing will be welcomed. Grondar, Dougan, and Ziana Lavaflow hold prayer services and they are well attended. Jenna Firehand assists both Grondar and Ziana. Services for Salem and Opal are held.
Food and drink are available and consumed. What to do next becomes the subject of the moment. Grondar intends to continue the search for Aria in the morning.
Ziana Lavaflow intends to remain in Mountain Lake as the new local priestess. For now, Jenna Firehand will assist Ziana in the task of restoring the temple and serving the town.
Ziana will say to Grondar, “I realize that you have other duties, but when you are able I would like your assistance in consecrating the temple to the Revered Mother. I can do it alone, but the gifts are stronger the more priests who are involved. At some point in the future the same thing will need to be done once a suitable altar is in place.”
Likewise, Mayor Arlos and Lieutenant Lotha will be remaining in Mountain Lake. There is much rebuilding to do between the duergar occupation and the earthquake.
“You are all welcomed in Mountain Lake and feel free to use it as a base of operations”, Mayor Arlos will say. “We hope that you meet with success in your quest to rescue the Lady Aria and reclaim Hammerfall. Fine place it was, I remember its halls like it was only yesterday.”
“But there are things that do concern me. I was the mayor here when Hammerfall was abandoned. It all started with an earthquake all those many years ago. Then they become more frequent as the days and weeks passed, until there was a great quake and volcano rose up in the mountains. It was because of these earthquakes that Hammerfall was originally abandoned. There was a rumor that some force was causing these quakes and many a good dwarf was sent to find and stop it, including some friends of mine. None return and Hammerfall was abandoned. I hope that this earthquake was just a one time event and not a repeat of what transpired all those years ago.”
The tale of the earthquakes and how they ended with the rising of a volcano can’t help remind each of the dwarves of a childhood story they were all told. A legend to frighten small misbehaving children. The legend of a monster known as a Draknor was responsible for such an event taking place. Whether there actually is such a creature or it’s just a story made up to quiet children is unknown.
“Much has changed due to those earthquakes. Passages and mine tunnels were buried and chasms opened up where none had been before. The landscape has changed dramatically.”
Mayor Arlos will describe several routes that lead away from Mountain Lake. One way was used by the dwarves to reach Mountain Lake by connecting to the mine tunnels near Fort Fletcher. A second tunnel connects to a deeper set of passages and it was used by the drow to reach Mountain Lake. The dwarves explore some of these earlier and found signs of drow passage.
There is an overland route that connects to the way between Fort Fletcher and Hammerfall itself. However, that way is buried in snow from the winter. It won’t be until late spring that the road will be passable again, four or five months from now.
“There is another tunnel that used to lead from Mountain Lake to Rockhaven. I did explore it a few decades back, but the damage made progress difficult for a lone traveler. Perhaps you might be able to find your way through? Its about a mile up the overland road to the cave entrance.”
“Rockhaven, in its prime, was the central living area for those in this part of the mines. It was also an underground fortress that secured the main passage back to Hammerfall. It’s about ten miles to Hammerfall itself from Rockhaven.”

GM Notes
GM Notes:
Mayor Arlos is over 300 years old and was around back when Hammerfall was abandoned. The earthquakes and volcano triggered the initial evacuation. The foul creatures that moved into the abandoned city just made it even harder to reclaim.
The high priests chest holds 13,787 gold pieces, and 21,900 silver coins. Pieces of Jet are typically 100 gp gems, while Fire Opals are typically 1000 gps.
Aria was given a map to this area, but it’s based on pre-earthquake conditions, so it may not exactly match up with current reality. It’s in the possession of Baluk Ironforge who functioned as Aria’s assistant and directed the work efforts. He’s back in the Fort Fletcher area. The closest you had explored towards Hammerfall was roughly some fifteen miles away in the passages near the fort.
Basic supplies can be had in Mountain Lake.
Now what?

Snorting, “Go on, lass; Let us just see what ya make of it.” He says as he looks down at the chest watching the woman work.
Slowly opening the chest he smiles slightly as he feels the weight of the bags within. Fishing in he takes a few coins in his hand, turning them over in his hand then biting it.
“Not bad for a Duegar… Wonder who they be stealing the veins from?” he wonders out loud,
"Noting the chest, Grondar looks over toward Farian. "I believe this is your area of expertise, Farian." Since Virae appears to also be inspecting the chest with a professional eye, Grondar says to her, "If you have the skills, Virae, feel free to assist Farian in this matter.

“Suit yourself.” She works at the chest spotting a poisoned needle but sadly her fingers aren’t up to the task, “Think moving that crank hurt my hands.” She says visibly frustrated, I can’t seem to disarm it.”
“Let me having a look lass.” He says as he takes out his tools and begins work; Quickly finding the poison trap another thing catches his eyes. A small sigil twinkles beneath his eyes. “Did ya happen to see this? It’s a good thing ya didn’t bash it, Senoia, your beard would be a wee bit singed.” He softly chuckles as he sets to work at both and quickly disarms them. The next chamber is that of the former High Priest of Deep Duerra. “And, I just be getting my feet warm.” He says putting his feet up by the fire. I just be hoping we can get that accursed thing away from her grasp.""An excellent question, my friend," Grondar replies. Rising, he addresses the assembled group. "First off, I think we should get a good night's sleep here in Mountain Lake. We deserve that much, at the very least. Come morning, I intend to head out in search of Aria. I will not abandon her to the will of that Orb, or beholder, or whatever it is. I trust you will accompany me?" He knows that some of his new friends have responsibilities here in Mountain Lake, so he will not be surprised if they choose to stay behind.
Re: Hammerfall #12
Virae
Looking at the coins that Farian take out of the sacks, Virae lets out a low whistle, “Been busy Haven’t they.”
Once back at Mountain Lake, Virae will rest up and renew her spells.
Drawing her shortswords, Virae will do just that.“I can handle it, lass,” Oran answers easily. “Keep an eye on things while I bring Senoia up.”
“Not a pleasant thought; fighting with just the pummel and hilt of a sword.” She adds as she accepts the dwarf’s point“It’s a subtle thing,” Senoia answers.
“And if it exploded in flames, enveloping you in its fiery embrace?” she adds looking at the dwarven warrior. “Brute force isn’t always the answer; just as your metalworking takes patience so does that of unknown chests and containers.”“I had no intention of touching it, me self,” Senoia retorts. “I figured one of you light fingered types would do that. Otherwise, I’ll just bash it in with me hammer!”
“Age before beauty.” She adds to Farian upon hearing Grondar’s words.Noting the chest, Grondar looks over toward Farian. "I believe this is your area of expertise, Farian." Since Virae appears to also be inspecting the chest with a professional eye, Grondar says to her, "If you have the skills, Virae, feel free to assist Farian in this matter."
“Suit yourself.” She works at the chest spotting a poisoned needle but sadly her fingers aren’t up to the task, “Think moving that crank hurt my hands.” She says visibly frustrated, I can’t seem to disarm it.”Snorting “Go ahead, lass. Let us just see what ya make of it.” He says as he looks down at the chest watching the woman work.
“No.” She says kicking herself but putting up to learning experience.
“Did ya happen to see this? It’s a good thing ya didn’t bash it, Senoia, your beard would be a wee bit singed.” He softly chuckles as he sets to work at both and quickly disarms them.
Looking at the coins that Farian take out of the sacks, Virae lets out a low whistle, “Been busy Haven’t they.”
Once back at Mountain Lake, Virae will rest up and renew her spells.

When the Hammer Falls
Grondar:
Grondar senses the taint of Deep Duerra on the altar. With a fierce grimace, he begins smashing it with Truthgiver until it is thoroughly destroyed. "There. Much better," he grumbles to himself.
Turning around, he finds that Virae and Farian have succeeded in opening the chest. It appears to contain a king's ransom in coins and gems. Even the stalwart priest's eyebrows are raised by the wealth on display. "That should be sufficient to buy plenty of ale for all of us, I'd say!"
Oran's Firehammer makes short work of the underground passage down which the last of the duergar fled. Grondar nods and claps Oran on the shoulder in appreciation.
Returning to Mountain Lake, Grondar finds that many of the residents are injured, so Berronar's powers are invoked repeatedly to aid all who need it. Once that is done, services are held for their deceased companions. Salem and Opal will both be missed.
Grondar listens carefully as Mayor Arlos relates what he knows of Rockhaven and the routes to Hammerfall. It seems they have a long way yet to travel. "Thank you, Mayor, for sharing your knowledge with us. From what you have said, I believe the route through Rockhaven is our best option for reaching Aria before anything more terrible befalls her. We will begin the trip to Rockhaven in the morning.
Before going to bed, Grondar will propose the following allocations of the treasure. Eight people saw the entire mission through: Farian, Daraden, Grondar, Senoia, Dougan, Oran, Arlos and Lotha. Each of them should receive 1 Fire Opal and 4 pieces of Jet; the remaining 2 pieces of Jet should be donated to the families of Salem and Opal. Additionally, each of the eight plus Virae should receive 1000 gps; all remaining gold and silver should be donated to the town of Mountain Lake and the new temple.
Grondar will get a good night's sleep and replenish his spells in the morning.

Does the map cover the Rockhaven and the area toward Hammerfall, or just the area around Fort Fletcher and Mountain Lake? In other words, is it worth going back to retrieve it from Baluk?

Grondar nods to the priestess. "I would be happy to help consecrate the temple. There should be time to do that in the morning before we leave. I would also be happy to assist in any way I can with planning and consecrating the new altar - though I'm afraid my participation will have to wait until after we have rescued Lady Aria."Ziana wrote:Ziana will say to Grondar, “I realize that you have other duties, but when you are able I would like your assistance in consecrating the temple to the Revered Mother. I can do it alone, but the gifts are stronger the more priests who are involved. At some point in the future the same thing will need to be done once a suitable altar is in place.”

GM Notes
GM Notes:
Here are some notes on priestly things so that we’re all on the same page. What Ziana would like Grondar to do is help her cast Sanctify on the new Berronar Temple. It just takes 10 minutes and creates an atmosphere beneficial to those of that faith, so this task merely requires praying for the spell and then casting it.
Consecrating a new altar is a whole different animal. The altar itself needs to be forged out of silver ore. At least the surface itself has to be silver, as it can rest on stone. Once that is completed, the High Priest of the temple must fast and pray for an entire day to consecrate the altar. The task can be shared with others of the same faith. At the end of the day, and assuming everything has gone well up to this point, certain spells are cast upon the altar to complete the task, a Focus spell being the most important one.
An altar is a symbol of a priest’s devotion and the focus of their congregation. The altar also becomes the focus of the congregation’s devotional energy. If there are enough faithful followers, this energy will become available to the priest to make use of. They can use this energy to set up permanent effects within the temple. Effects such as Protection from Evil and other such protection spells.
Having a consecrated altar also allows the priest to create magic items of their faith. Such items as enchanted armor, weapons, and miscellaneous magic items, along with certain kinds of potions. The process creates a connection between the priest and the altar. Only the priest to whom the altar is consecrated can make use of its properties.
The map is a copy of the official mine registry back in Rockhome. It covers the entire area around Hammerfall and shows much of the area. Of course it also is now 70 years out of date, given all the landscape changes that have taken place. It does show where things are and the tunnels that connect them. You can probably reach Hammerfall easily enough without out. Just follow the main tunnels as you come across them. I’d say it’s handy to have, but not critical.Does the map cover the Rockhaven and the area toward Hammerfall, or just the area around Fort Fletcher and Mountain Lake? Try it and find out!
Oran
Oran:
Oran throws his hammer a few times and finally the passage collapses. Satisfied with his work, Oran joins the others as they return to Mountain Lake.
Later on, Oran will accept the treasure that Grondar hands out. He’ll hang on the fire opal for now, and a handful of the coins. The rest he’ll turn over to the Priestess Ziana.
“Here priestess, these will do you more good them they will me.”
Next morning, Oran is up and ready to go. His armor has been cleaned and he’ll seek out supplies for the trip to come, as they have no idea just how long they’ll be away. He’ll take plenty of food and drink for the trip to come.
“Drakkimor always did make sure we had the best equipment for our adventures.”Grondar wrote:"Frost giant, ya say?! Well, that beats my enchanted gauntlets, which are supposed to make me about as strong as an ogre."
“With pleasure.”Grondar wrote:"Just what I was thinking, Oran. The harder we make it for them to return, the better. Have at!" Grondar will back away, herding the others before him to allow Oran room to work.

“Aye, you can count on my hammer,” Oran will call out.Grondar wrote:"An excellent question, my friend," Grondar replies. Rising, he addresses the assembled group. Dougan
Dougan:
Dougan will graciously accept the rewards from their hard fought battles. “My thanks. I will see that this is properly used to carry on the works of the All-Father.”
“I too have no intention of abandoning the Lady Aria,” Dougan will state. “It would be wise to send a message back to those at Fort Fletcher to let them know what is going on. Do not forget, in addition to our pushing towards Hammerfall, we were clearing the tunnels of any danger to the miners. They will need to keep supplying Fort Fletcher with coal.”Grondar wrote:"An excellent question, my friend," Grondar replies. Rising, he addresses the assembled group. Senoia
Senoia:
While Senoia would never admit it, she’s very much afraid of heights and thus hates dangling on the end of ropes.
The excruciating wait pays off handsomely in the end!
“Now there’s a sight to gladden the heart of any dwarf!”
Senoia resists the urge to run her hands through the coins. At least for right now, but she will dance a little jig.
In spite of the hard drinking and keeping friendly company, Senoia is ready to go come the morning. It looks like there is another long hike ahead of them.
Grondar is puzzled by the woman's temperament, but makes no comment on it. After all, women are creatures of mystery among every race - or so he's heard.

“No, not a pleasant fate in the heat of the fray,” Senoia agrees.Virae wrote:“Not a pleasant thought; fighting with just the pummel and hilt of a sword.” She adds as she accepts the dwarf’s point.
“Point taken,” Senoia will concede and in the process gaining some respect for the newcomer. “There’s a reason why I’m not back home making weapons and out doing this.”Virae wrote:“And if it exploded in flames, enveloping you in its fiery embrace?” she adds looking at the dwarven warrior. “Brute force isn’t always the answer; just as your metalworking takes patience so does that of unknown chests and containers.”

"Aye, now we see about drinking the town dry!" Daraden says after receiving his windfall. It is sad that not all of them returned, and he plans to toast to their honor and bravery that night.
“I would not call you a fool!” Senoia says with a laugh. Settling in, and being aware of not upsetting Darkfang, Senoia will share a few ore ales with Daraden and then see where the evening takes them.
"Aye, well ye don't know me well enough lass!" Daraden replies with a laugh. He slides over and slaps the seat next to him hard, guessing she'll join. He'll partake in some drinking games with Senoia while Darkfang couldn't seem more bored. The wolf mostly lays there with his head on his front paws and his ears flat, completely uninterested. Daraden will later relate some of his and Darkfang's exploits leading up to their current situation. The one about the half-orge and the missing tree limb seems to make Darkfang chuckle, if a wolf can be thought to be able to.
If the opportunity arises for Daraden and Senoia to partake in a little of the 'rough and tumble' he certainly won't mind, but won't push the matter. "Me ma said it never wise to argue with a woman stronger than you," he'll say if Senoia refuses and let the matter drop.
Regardless of what occurs, Daraden wakes up ready for the next day although his hair and beard certainly seem to have weathered the worst of it. While he tries to tame its wildness, Daraden listens to what the plans are.

When the Hammer Falls
Grondar:
Later, Grondar approaches Mayor Arlos. "I have a favor to ask of you, Mayor. Could you get word to Baluk Ironforge back in the mines near Fort Fletcher of what has transpired and let him know that we are pushing on toward Hammerfall? Also, could you send someone in the morning to guide us to the cave entrance leading to Rockhaven?"
In the morning, Grondar rises early and conducts a short service. Afterwards, he helps Ziana Sanctify the new temple. Once that is gone, he will gather the rest of the group and head out toward Rockhaven.

Like Oran, he donates most of the gold to Ziana and the new temple.
