New Frontiers #2 - Adventurers
The fine meal at the Green Forest Inn is winding down. The serving wenches are taking the dishes away when the door to the Inn opens once more. In strides a man in dark green and brown clothing. He stands just under six feet in height with a full brown beard and matching colored eyes. Many of you have met the man before, as he is Sherwood, the man who gathered you all for this quest. Sherwood does not have the stereotypical appearance of a wizard; rather he looks more like a woodsman.
Sherwood pauses to exchange pleasantries with the Innkeeper before stepping up to your table. In the background, the Innkeeper assists his daughters with the dishes and shoos them out of the common chamber, leaving the room empty except for the adventurers.
"Well met everyone," Sherwood states. "I'm glad you could all make it. I'll get right down to business. I've gathered you all to help me deal with a problem that's been plaguing the area. A man named Lothar seems to be the driving force behind or a high man in the organization of bandits and outlaws that plague the caravans of the High Road. It is also believed that Lothar has made an attempt to kill one of the nobility here in Pyris."
"Our task is to track down and capture Lothar alive so that he can be questioned. He has a sizeable force of bandits under his command, so it will not be easy. Plus I have the suspicion that banditry is just one of many crimes that can be contributed to Lothar."
"Get plenty of rest tonight, for we ride at first light. It's a three day journey to where our paths will cross with Lothar's, so be prepared to ride hard. There are several extra horses in the stable for those of you without a mount of your own."
"A Lord Validar and Lord Corley will be joining us in this mission. Anyone have any questions?"

Sherra:
Listening to what Sherwood says about this Lothar, she can not help but wonder if her earlier encounter just before arriving here is related. Once it becomes obvious Sherwood is finished, she will speak up.
"I am wondering if the two individuals I had... pleasantries... with are from the same organization." She will go on to describe each man in brief but specific details, and then add, "I would have questioned them on it, but they seemed to have both begun suffering from extreme blood loss."
She shrugs slightly and lets a sly smirk play across one corner of her mouth.

Twenty Questions or So...
Grondar:
Listening to Sherwood describe the nature of their mission, Grondar doesn't like the sound of it. If what the mage says is true, this Lothar is definitely a man to be wary of. The killing of anyone is reprehensible, but attempts on royalty have a way of becoming very sticky business indeed.
And then there are the bandits. Rough, violent and desperate men, usually. It seems they will have their hands full.
Grondar waits on the answer to Sherra's question before putting forth his own. "Ahh, yes, master Sherwood, I have a bit of a question. The actual riding of those great beasts is not a skill common among my people. Due to our stature and, um, bodily configuration, it is not something that is very comfortable or practical for us. Thus, like most dwarves, I never actually learned to ride. Have you a wagon or carriage in which I might ride along? Otherwise, it seems I will have to continue on foot, which may slow the group down a bit."

Sherwood
Sherwood:
Sherwood will sit down for some of the fine roasted chicken before returning to his own private room for the evening. There is much to do in the next several days. Many questions that need answers.
“It is entirely possible that they were part of Lothar’s organization. They seem to be behind much of the banditry in this area, including forays into the Elf Holds. The rank and file is pretty much kept in the dark about what is going on anyway, so those men probably didn’t have much information to offer. This is why it is so important to take Lothar alive. The others may be dealt with as you see fit. Most are criminals under the King’s Law already.”Sherra wrote:"I am wondering if the two individuals I had... pleasantries... with are from the same organization." She will go on to describe each man in brief but specific details, and then add, "I would have questioned them on it, but they seemed to have both begun suffering from extreme blood loss."
“I’ve secured a pony for your use, Grondar. While not as big as a grown horse, she is more to your size. Much of our journey is along trails and across open land. A wagon would just slow us down to a crawl. If that is not satisfactory, we have to come to some other arrangement. Riding of a horse is not that difficult. Time is of the essence in this particular instance.”Grondar wrote:"Ahh, yes, master Sherwood, I have a bit of a question. Ivy
Ivy:
Ivy listens intently to Sherwood’s tale. “These bandits that plague the honest caravan folks are a nasty bunch. It would be beneficial to stop their criminal activity, as gently as possible of course.”
As a Priestess of the Goddess of Life, Ivy is forbidden to intentionally take a life. Countering these bandits will be a stern test of Ivy’s own personal code. A fine line that she has walked for most of her service to Azrella.
“Aye, let us retire for the evening as the next few days will be a test for us all. May the Blue Lady protect you while you slumber and make all of your dreams pleasant.”
Later on in her room, Ivy will kneel down beside her bed and say her evening prayer to Azrella. She’ll also pray that she’ll be able to live up to the Blue Lady’s teachings and not intentionally take a life.

Grondar
Grondar:
A grimace can almost be seen beneath Grondar's neatly-trimmed beard. "A pony? Hrm... I guess if someone can show me the basics, I'll manage as best I can...."
After consuming a modest meal and washing it down with a single cup of wine, Grondar collects his things from near the door and approaches the innkeeper. "Berronar's blessing upon you and your lovely family, good sir. Might you be willing to show me to a room for the night?"
Soon, Grondar is ensconsed in one of the inn's fine rooms, a Wyvern Watch cast to avoid late-night interruptions. The inn is certainly more luxurious than anywhere he's stayed in quite awhile. After completing his evening prayers, Grondar settles in for what will hopefully be a peaceful night's rest. Of course, he will rise early enough for his morning devotions, allowing him to renew the miraculous powers that Berronar has gifted him with.

Kylie:
Sherwood describes the task he hopes the group can accomplish and Kylie listens with a dubious expression. Sounds like a royal pain, and unlikely to be as much fun as rifling some wealthy merchant's house. Why'd Jallarzi have to get me into this mess, anyway?..
"Yeah, I got questions. Do we get to keep anything we ah... liberate from these bandits?
"And who are these 'Lords' you mentioned? Some arrogant, boorish fops looking for a little excitement the brothels can't provide, I suppose?"

Laucian
After listening to what Sherwood has to say, Laucian remains quiet for a short time taking it all in. Many questions form in his mind concerning this mission
Laucian will ask the following questions:
"Are we to be compensated for our time?"
"What type of Terrian is his base of Operation in?"
"Seeing how we are going to be a little bit outnumbered, how do you propose we go about this?"
"You acquired horses for the others; What of provisions and other supplies?"
"Grondor, if You wish I can show you the basics of riding."
After the meeting Laucian will go and see about getting either arrows or supplies to make them, {Preferably supplies to make them.} Afterward he will stow these supplies, he will pray to Ehlonna for her blessings and go to sleep, Dagger under pillow.

preparing for dawn...
Sherra:
She will listen to Sherwood's response and then shake her head. "Won't be very organized if they keep everyone in the dark. Their loss ultimately."
She'll turn to Grondar and lay a light hand on his broad shoulder. "Riding is easy, I'll be happy to help out as well. Just think, we might be getting you on a boat next."
She'll be ready to pull her hand away quick if Grondar isn't one to be playful.
As everyone begins to head upstairs, she will make her way to her room after grabbing a piece of fruit from the remains of the exquisite dinner. She will bar the door and window(s) after investigating the room completely. Then she will shed her armor and flop onto the bed to enjoy the comfort that will be missed by the upcoming days on the road.

Questions and Answers
Grondar:
Grondar looks from Laucian to Sherra. "Bless you both. I'll be happy to receive any instruction you can provide."
"A boat, eh?" he says, meeting Sherra's gaze. "I once was taken aboard a raft down an underground river," he continues, shaking his head and clearly reliving an unpleasant memory. "Anything has got to be better than that!"

Chareos
As Sherwood is telling us of the mission, Chareos Listens intently upon his words. At the mention that there was an attempt on local nobleperson's life Chareos is concerned not only of this mission but what else may arise due to this sticky situation. When Sherwood finishes his tale of events and our objective, Chareos sits and waits momentarily glancing at the faces of his companions, trying to read their expressions. He can't help but wonder if everyone here is up to the task at hand.
"I have a few questions." Chareos will reply after listening to a few questions from the others.
"Who will be leading us in this endeavor?"
"When you say you have suspicions of other crimes this Lothar may have commited, Of which crimes do you speak?"
"These Lords of which you speak, Who are they and what skills do they possess?"
Chareos will wait and think about asking his last question, but his curiousity gets the better of him. Choosing his words carfeully,"This Lord Validar and Lord Corley that will be joining us, Would they be related or acquaintances of the noble that was to be killed?"
"I apologize for my curiousity but it is a logical question." he will add if Sherwood looks at him oddly.

GM Notes:
GM Note:
A quick note here as far as Grondar riding a mount. One is able to ride a horse without having the Land Based Riding proficiency. Having the proficiency allows one to do certain tricks with their mount, such as jumping obstacles, being able to jump into the saddle etc. So not having the prof is not a great hindrance when it comes to regular riding.

Sherwood:
Grondar:
"You'll do fine, Grondar. At best all you'll have to do is hang on."
Kylie:
"Any treasure found that cannot be clearly determined to belong to someone else will be split evenly among the group. I personally will not be taking any shares of monies found, but may take an interesting magic item should one be uncovered."
Laucian:
(Sherwood is primarily speaking of merchant cargo when it comes to property that can be determined to belong to someone else.)
Chareos:
Grondar:

"You would be very mistaken, Kylie. Lord Validar is a seasoned adventurer. His adventuring party was instrumental in preventing the Hextorite invasion of Gateway just a few months back. Lord Corley is not as experienced, but seems to be a good man.""And who are these 'Lords' you mentioned? Some arrogant, boorish fops looking for a little excitement the brothels can't provide, I suppose?"
Laucian:
"Compensation will take the form of treasure earned from the bandits, with the exception of property that can be determined to belong to others. Additionally, the stopping of these bandits is to the benefit of all in this area, humans and elves included.""Are we to be compensated for our time?"
(Sherwood is primarily speaking of merchant cargo when it comes to property that can be determined to belong to someone else.)
"Much of our journey will be through light forest and across grasslands. Your and Sherra's scouting skills will be very beneficial.""What type of terrain is his base of Operation in?"
"We are not without our own skills and resources, Laucian. Most bandits ply their trade through numbers and intimidation and do not expect much resistance. Many of such men are unaccustomed to their victims fighting back. Bloody their nose and they will think twice about engaging us. Just how we will deal with the bandits will depend on the situation as we come upon it.""Seeing how we are going to be a little bit outnumbered, how do you propose we go about this?"
"The Innkeeper will provide food and drink for each of us for one week. Likewise, there will be enough feed for each horse to last a week. What other supplies do you require?""You acquired horses for the others, what of provisions and other supplies?"
Chareos:
“For the most part, I shall be leading the party. But I suspect that Lord Validar will frequently offer his opinions.”"Who will be leading us in this endeavor?"
“As I stated, they are merely suspicions and not things I can definitively prove. I do suspect that Lothar might be involved in a much greater conspiracy than just simple bandit activity and attacks on the nobility. I would rather keep my thoughts on that matter to myself until I have more proof.”"When you say you have suspicions of other crimes this Lothar may have committed. Of which crimes do you speak?"
“Lord Validar is close to achieving Knighthood, so he is, as the bards tend to wax, the proverbial knight in shining armor. He is a warrior in heavy armor and the son of the Baron of Pyris. Lord Corley is younger and not as experienced. He is the youngest son of a Cynalonian general.”"These Lords of which you speak, who are they and what skills do they possess?"
“Let’s just say that they have a vested interest in this affair and leave it at that. Should either of them wish to explain further, that will be their prerogative.”Chareos will wait and think about asking is last question, but his curiosity gets the better of him. Choosing his words carefully, "This Lord Validar and Lord Corley that will be joining us, would they be related or acquaintances of the noble that was to be killed?"

The elf maiden is relieved when Sherwood finally arrives. At least she can find out just why she’s been summoned here and how long it will be before she will be able to return to her homeland. She listens closely as Sherwood explains their mission and the various questions the others ask of him. However the one question going through her mind goes unasked.
Speaking in Elvish, Lilia will ask, “I have a question, Sherwood Elf-Friend. Why did you choose us for this mission? Surely you must know many experienced adventurers far better suited for this task? What do we have to offer that others do not?”

Sherwood:
Sherwood considers Lilia’s query for a moment. Speaking in common so everyone can understand, Sherwood will respond, “That is a fair question, Lilia. For those who cannot speak Elven, Lilia asked why I chose all of you for this mission instead of other experienced adventurers.”
“It is true that I do know many other adventurers, most of which are currently engaged in other endeavors. Each of you has great potential to be fine adventurers. You’ve all been involved in adventures of a much smaller scale. The time has come to take your careers to the next level.”
“My goal is to make this world a safer, better place for all who live in it. To create a nicer world for all of our children. I trust none of you object to that?”
“I am using this adventure to gauge how well each of you will handle this adventure. Should we be successful, then there may be other missions I will call upon you for in the future. This part of the world needs as many adventurers as it can get to battle the evils that plague us. So in a certain sense, this mission is your audition. It may lead to bigger or better things. Or it may not, should you choose so.”

Laucian listens intently on the questions being asked as well as Sherwood's answers. When he shows general concern for humans as well as elves living in the Elfholds, Laucian can't help but respect this and begins to see why Sherwood has the respect and friendship of his clan.

"I do not require any supplies but as a unit we have several archers. I think it would be wise if we acquired supplies to fashion arrows and bolts, as the need arises."

Upon hearing his questions answered, Chareos is relieved that Sherwood will be leading them though he isn't sure of this Lord Validar's skills at leading. He can only hope that he isn't rash.
When the Meeting ends he will seek out his room. After checking out his room he will stow his gear and begin to memorize spells for tomorrow's ride.

The Elf Maiden frowns a little bit at Sherwood’s explanation, but seeing that everyone else seems satisfied makes no comment.
“Very well, then,” Lilia will say haltingly in common. “Then I shall be ready to depart in the morning.”
With that, Lilia will retire to her drab chambers for the evening. She’ll sleep lightly for a few hours before rising. Then she’ll study her spellbook and prepare for the long, arduous journey to come. She’ll double check her gear and have her bow ready to use on the ride in case of attack.

A smile crosses her face at Sherwood's assurances regarding their allowance to retain whatever they can loot from the bandits. Of course, Sherwood is likely to snag any decent magic items, but Kylie figures that was to be expected anyway.
Sherwood's assessment of the nobles they will be meeting in the morning sounds far too rosy by half to Kylie. They may be warriors, but are most likely to be arrogant and demanding like most nobles. Yech. "We'll see..." is all she says in reply.
Kylie had already known that this was basically an audition, so Sherwood's response to Lilia doesn't surprise her. The rest of the discussion gets a bit maudlin and sappy for her taste, though the promise of extra arrows brings a smile to her face. However, there seems little left to be said, so she heads up to her room for final preparations before bed. With such an early departure the next morning, it appears that there is little time for fun this night.
