Eternal Vigilance #80 - "Project: Starwatch"

Roll Call: Virtually Everyone

The get together at the Starr’s apartment was a success and everyone makes their way home. The following morning comes way to early for most along with the dread of having to go to work! At least there is a feeling of dread for those who actually have jobs. The day passes slowly for those at work.

That evening, the heroes make there to the Sea Base. Goldstar and Stargirl are already there, as Stargirl was under going more training in the combat simulator.

Surprisingly, there is two newcomers present as well: the Scarlet Sabre and Starguard! Scarlet met most of the team during that crisis with the Red Claw and his Supervillain contest. Powershift was captured as part of that affair and many of the Vigilant took part in the final raid on his lair.

The Vigilant are familiar with the Starguard. It is a galactic peace keeping force that was founded by the original Goldstar. The Goldstar that you know, Gwen from the party, was the one who founded the Vigilant. As of late she’s been off world becoming more familiar with Starguard operations. One day she’ll take over as head of that organization. This particular Starguard wears armor with a star field pattern on it. He’s human and here to protect the Earth from alien influence. The Starguards are normal beings that have been given training and cybernetic upgrades.

Once everyone is present, Goldstar will begin speak. “Welcome friends. I am pleased that you could join us. I’ve returned among you, at least for now, but Flux will remain the team leader. I’ve got several projects to work on and from time to time I will need your help. With the recent crises behind us, it’s time to take a more proactive stance in protecting not only San Diego but the world.”

“To this end, I present Project: Starwatch. Now Edgar.”

In response, the base AI creates a holographic projection in the middle of the conference room. The hologram changes as Goldstar lays out the project.

“Satellites in Earth orbit have brought the world closer together. You can watch video feed from the other side of the planet in real time. Observation satellites can read newspapers from orbit. Project: Starwatch has a similar idea, but on a much grander scale. We’re going to be placing observation satellites to cover not only Earth, but the entire solar system as well!”

“As we speak, the Hand of the Guardian is placing the satellites in a pattern around the solar system, about one light year out. The satellites are in orbit above and below the plane of the elliptic. Once in place, the satellites will automatically cloak. They will remain undetectable to human technology for at least two hundred years.”

“Effectively, the satellite will create a network that will allow instantaneous real-time scanning of most anything within the Solar System. They a will alert us should any alien ship travel into the solar system. They will also scan for signs of any aliens or alien technology located within the solar system. Should such a thing be detected, we’ll have to investigate.”

“These satellites do not possess offensive weaponry of any kind. They are simply an ‘eye in the sky’ to keep watch over us. Once in place, the satellites will be networked to a ship inside the solar system. Edgar will monitor Starwatch from that location and relay any findings to the Sea Base.”

“Now we come to the mysterious part and where I need the assistance of some of you. Other Agents of Tesseract will be providing us with the ship to serve as the focal point for the Starwatch project. I don’t know what this ship is or where it will be coming from, but it will appear in a few hours on the other side of the sun.”

“Our task will be to take the Star-V and rendezvous with it. I’ve asked Scarlet and Starguard to accompany us, as Scarlet has the computer know how that this mission needs. Tesla will be needed to pilot the Star-V and her electronics skills will be a needed as well. I’ve also asked Menagerie to accompany me, as she can mimic my powers and we’ll be operating in the vacuum of space. Stargirl will accompany us as well, as well as anyone else who wishes to go along.”

“Our mission is to retrieve this ship, make it ready to use, and then move it into position to link up with the Starwatch satellites. I don’t expect any trouble, but one never knows. The rest of you can carry on with you regular duties while we’re engaged in this project.”

“Got anything to add, Flux?”
Try it and find out!

GM Notes:

Feel free to expand upon your workday and environment, those of you who have a job.

The Star-V is the Vigilant space ship, but none of you knew that you had one! Other team vehicles include the Sea-V and the Sky-V, a submarine and jet.

So who’s going with Goldstar? Who’s staying behind and what are you doing? If you didn’t attend the meeting, what were you doing in the meantime?

Gargoyle was updated in the previous post.

Now what?
Try it and find out!

“And how long of a window do we have to respond before they come here?” he asks curiously.

“I think I’ll stay on the ground where, I was intended to stay.” He says with a smirk, “I can see the stars fine from earth, no need for me to get closer.

Stargirl:
Lily wrote:"Why hello, Gloria. Wonderful to see you again." Lily notes that Gloria makes her way semi-directly over to the young man named Cyrus. Young romance, or just age identification, she wonders to herself. He greets her with a hug and a kiss, answering Lily's silent question pretty clearly.
“Oh, hi, Lily!” Gloria answers en route to see Cyrus. “Excuse me, my guest has just arrived.”

The party comes to an end and Gloria is thankful she doesn’t have to clean up!

Next morning she’s up late and shares breakfast with mom. The two chat for a time and Gloria’s really glad to have her mom home again.

It’s time to go to the Sea Base once more for some power practice. This time we swing by to pick up Cyrus first. Transforming into Stargirl, Gloria flies after Goldstar across San Diego. Landing an out of the way place, Gloria changes back and walks to Cyrus’ house. She greets his parents and asks if Cyrus is ready to go. He is and the two walk off once more.

Once out of sight, Gloria will change back to Stargirl.

“Ready to fly?” She’ll ask with a grin. “I’ll carry you.”

With the shout of ‘Neutron Star’, Stargirl will amp up her strength enough to carry Frostbite to the Sea Base. Being so close to his cold body doesn’t bother Gloria either.

Once there, Mom shows Cyrus around and we end up practicing in the trainer for a few hours. At the big meeting later on, Stargirl just stays off to the side with Frostbite. She has no idea what’s going on and being here with this many heroes just makes her nervous!

Mom makes her pitch and announces that I’ll be joining her in going into space.

“Sure, I guess,” Stargirl will answer. It should be a big deal, as Gloria already knows that she can survive in space on her own.
Frostbite wrote:“Besides, You might need me.” He says as he looks at Stargirl.
“Hey, I’ll take the company! This sounds like it’ll be pretty boring, but you never know.”

Famous last words! We'll probably be locked in a life or death struggle in just a few hours!
Time to rise and shine!

Menagerie:
Goldstar wrote:“I know the feeling,” Gwen wistfully answers. “I’ve often wondered what life would have been like if I had a son.”
"Busy. Believe me, it's a whole different experience from raising a girl. Not better or worse, just different."
Goldstar wrote:“Where we’re going, you wont find any courtrooms!” Gwen jokes.
"Gee, how disappointing..." Lily replies with a laugh. Still, she's intrigued, as it's hard to imagine anywhere in the world that doesn't have courts of some kind.
Whitney wrote:“Thank you,” Whitney answers. “I’m not exactly sure what my duties are going to be just yet, so we may or may not be working together in the future. Mainly what I did in past for Vigilant Inc was run background checks on perspective employees. Gwen’s generous offer came at a time when I needed a change of scenery in my life. So here I am!”
"Well, let me just say, 'Welcome.' I'm sure we'll find plenty of interesting work for you. If you need anything, please let me know; my office is in room 308. I hope you enjoy the party, Whitney."

Lily notes Eric's arrival, so swings by to say hello.
Sea Guard wrote:“Sorry I’m late. I was trying to get ‘Shift to come too, but he’s still worried about that Eldrich guy and wouldn’t leave him alone at the Sea Base. What did I miss?”
"It's good that you could make it, Eric. Gwen introduced a few new faces, and the barbeque is delicious. I think if you hurry, there's still a little left," she says with a humorous smile.

With kids needing to be put to bed, Lily and her family leave around 8pm. A quick round of good-byes, and lot of collecting of gear and they are off for home. Fortunately, on Sunday evening the traffic is light and they make good time. The kids are bathed and in bed by 9:30, which is still pretty late for Lance, but the busy weekend helps them fall asleep quickly.

The next morning, following a quick breakfast, Lily drops Rose off at her art camp while Donny takes Lance to his aunt's house for the day. One of the advantages of having family nearby is that they can sometimes be very helpful in regards to taking care of the kids.

Once at the office, Lily spends most of the morning reviewing some Vigilant, Inc. patents submissions. While most of their highest tech never leaves the building - or the Sea Base - some of the lesser inventions with wide usage potential and little chance of misuse do get patented. This brings in a steady stream of income to help finance the organization and the associated superteam.

The afternoon is mostly given over to inspecting contracts and various other legal documents necessary to the running of Vigilant Inc. This is really the meat of the legal profession, and is diametrically opposed to the glamourous stuff one sees on TV and in movies. Tedious and boring though it may be, no company can function effectively without this work getting done.

Not surprisingly, Lily is quite happy to leave it behind at the end of the day and fly out to the Sea Base in the form of Quasar, leader of the Protectors. Curiosity regarding Gwen's big secret has been plaguing Lily's mind all day, causing her to be a bit less productive than she might otherwise have been. Once within a mile or two of the base, Lily dives into the water and transforms into a dolphin. Changing direction at that point, she swims the rest of the way to the base and enters through one of the sea gates.

Drying off and reverting to her Menagerie form, Lily joins the others in the main conference room. She pauses to chat with Scarlet Sabre and Starguard while they wait for Goldstar to begin her presentation.

And what a presentation it is!

Even with the years that she has been a member of the Vigilant, Lily is sometimes still amazed by some of the things they get involved in. This is one of those times.

Starships and a space observation network covering the entire solar system. Wow. Having read about the development of something called the Hubble Space Telescope, Lily suspects this makes that look like a child's toy in comparison. Lily doesn't know all that much about technology, but this is flat out amazing.

Lily nods when Gwen mentions her. She hadn't really known what the mission entailed when Gwen brought it up earlier, but she's looking forward to it now that she has some idea of its scope. "In case other power sets are needed, I also have Quasar of the Protectors and Firewing in my repertoire. Speaking of which, what kind of activities do you anticipate us performing outside the ship?"

While Lily isn't technical enough to ask, I presume they have some kind of hyper-light communications available for the satellite network?

Blackout:
“I thought it would be a good idea for all of us to get together and unwind. While I may not have lived through all the things you and the others did, I can sympathize. You were, at least in another reality, part of the team, so you’re welcome here anytime.”
"Thank you for that," Dylan says. "It's tough wrapping my head around that whole alternate reality thing considering I'm not entirely sure if all of it was real or just an extremely well-fabricated dream I had after eating too many nachos before bed," he says the last with a smile.
Later on, Gwen will chat with Dylan some more. “I have to admit that I know very little about you and some of the others. Do you have a day job? What sort of plans do you have as far as your professional activities go?”
"Well as you might imagine, most normal occupations can't be done by the blind," Dylan says easily. "I get enough income to survive thanks mostly to my permanent disability. Since I don't want for much I don't really complain about being poorer than most."

"As far as what you might consider my 'professional activities' I just look to keep the streets safe," Dylan adds. "I'm sure that means we'll continue to cross paths, but having extra help to call on or help unravel a mystery will definitely be a boon."

Eventually it's time to go, but Blackout isn't ready to return home quite yet. He suggests a walk along the beach to Lavender and looks forward to spending the time with her as if they were the only two in the world.

The next day will see Blackout training, honing his martial arts and skills with his throwing rod. If Lavender is interested, he will begin to show her the basics of self-defense. After getting some lunch, Blackout knows it's time to patrol and will once more invite Lavender along. Together they begin to decide on some strategic teleportation spots as he shows her more of the city. Being able to respond to a crisis instantly rather than swinging across town will be immensely helpful.

Tesla:

The interesting conversations that were starting up seem to really go nowhere and soon it's time to leave. Tesla takes her leave and heads home the long way, getting more rubber-to-road time in before calling it a night. Her mind wanders to just what the task is that will be needed of her, so she goes to bed with a mixture of impatience and curiousity.

Upon her arrival, Tesla sees familiar faces and a few new ones. With Starguard here, Tesla's mind really begins to wonder just what is in store for all of them. Soon enough everything is revealed.

"I'm definitely looking forward to this," Tesla says eagerly. A chance to get her hands piloting a spacecraft! Who knows how long she would have had to stay in the military before they would move her to NASA, if she even ever would have had the chance. Many of the best pilots in the world never get picked and that could have easily been her fate. There are some benefits to having her life drastically and permanently changed after all! Needless to say, she is more than ready to go.

"I'm sure it is," Gwen will agree. "The only real difference is that I thought Gloria wouldn't gain her powers for a few more years until she was older and more mature. I was twenty before I gained mine. I don't want to think about having them at sixteen! I had enough problems when I was that young!”
Dylan wrote:"Thank you for that," Dylan says. "It's tough wrapping my head around that whole alternate reality thing considering I'm not entirely sure if all of it was real or just an extremely well-fabricated dream I had after eating too many nachos before bed," he says the last with a smile.
"That's probably the best way to deal with it. Fortunately, I haven't lived through any of that, at least to my knowledge. Current reality can be difficult enough to grasp at times!"
Dylan wrote:"Well as you might imagine, most normal occupations can't be done by the blind," Dylan says easily.

Gwen will nod her understanding. "If you do need anything, just contact me through your comlink, Dylan. I can set you up in an apartment or provide you with a bit more financial security. If you ever need medical attention, just see Dr. Williams down in the clinic. She's an expert when it comes to meta-human medicine. And you're right, what you do is important and perhaps we will cross paths from time to time."

Next day, Goldstar is off to the Sea Base with Stargirl and Frostbite. She runs the pair through the combat trainer to help them hone their skills. It's mostly for Gloria's benefit as she's still new to her powers.

During a break she'll talk to Powershift and try to get him to relax around Eldrich.

That evening, Goldstar lays out the Starwatch Project. It's an important step in protecting Earth and the entire solar system. Numerous species of aliens are on Earth right now. Too many pieces of potentially dangerous alien technology are loose on Earth. These need to be rounded up before disaster strikes.

It is the goal of the Starguard to allow a world to develop at its own pace, without outside interference. The Starguard works to protect such worlds to prevent alien races from plundering a less technologically advance planet of their resources or giving them too advanced technology.
Backlash wrote:"And how long of a window do we have to respond before they come here?" he asks curiously.
"From detection and processing the data to Edgar alerting us, I should be a matter of seconds. These satellites relay information essentially in real time, in spite the vast distances between them."

"The satellites are designed to work in tandem. For instance, let's say we want them to scan downtown San Diego. The more of the satellites we train on the target, the faster the will be able to scan. The R&D boys assure me that at least three of the satellites will be able to scan any one point in the solar system at any time. More, most of the time."
Backlash wrote:"I think I'll stay on the ground where, I was intended to stay." He says with a smirk, "I can see the stars fine from earth, no need for me to get closer.
"We always need people ground side, Backlash. It's a big world here, and it’s becoming even vaster when you include the solar system too."

Needless to say, she is more than ready to go.
"I though you would be," Goldstar says with a smile.

"And that reminds me. I have some new gadgets to hand out to you all."

From a bag, Goldstar produces a handful of identical devices. They superficially look like large cell phones.

“These PDA’s are a compliment to your Comlinks. Edgar can transfer large blocks of data into them. Say you need a map, just ask Edgar and he’ll send on to your unit.”

Picking one of the PDA’s up specifically, Goldstar hands it to Tesla. “This one is already programmed with the control scheme for the Star-V. As I understand it they are pretty similar to what you’ve flown before. But you can take a look at them before we take flight. Oh, and the PDA’s are resistant to your particular powers too. They’re tough and durable.”

While Lily isn't technical enough to ask, I presume they have some kind of hyper-light communications available for the satellite network?
Yes, data is transferred instantaneous, much like the real world satellite analogy at the start of Goldstar's presentation. She won’t go into the tech involved: it just works.

Lavender:
Eventually it's time to go, but Blackout isn't ready to return home quite yet. He suggests a walk along the beach to Lavender and looks forward to spending the time with her as if they were the only two in the world.
The party finally comes to an end. Ri guesses that it wasn’t that terrible. Most of the people were nice to her, so that was a bonus.

But Dylan isn’t ready to go home and we go to the beach instead. Ri lets Dylan set the pace of their time together. He’s so full of surprises that she doesn’t want to make any assumptions. It’s sort of a pleasant experience as most men were only interested in one thing from Ri.
The next day will see Blackout training, honing his martial arts and skills with his throwing rod. If Lavender is interested, he will begin to show her the basics of self-defense. After getting some lunch, Blackout knows its time to patrol and will once more invite Lavender along. Together they begin to decide on some strategic teleportation spots as he shows her more of the city. Being able to respond to a crisis instantly rather than swinging across town will be immensely helpful.
Ri will dress appropriately for the training drills.

“You know, most guys have something else in mind with me when they say they want to work out,” she’ll tease.

Ri is pretty much clueless when it comes to self-defense. Her idea of self-defense is to teleport away or teleport whatever is annoying her away. Dylan is clearly faster and stronger than Ri.

Later she’ll dress in her costume and let her hair down for some even activities on the town. She’ll follow Blackout and work on memorizing good places to shift in and out of.

Eldrich Arcane

So. I am here. This is my home now. There are no others like me here. No
centers of magical study. From now on I must make do with what I have.

Eldrich has been given a room within the Starr building, an introduction to
the staff, and little else. Yet it is vastly more than he had the day before.
His brief attempt at rapprochement with the other magic-powered member of
this 'team' was rebuffed and now he has been left to his own devices.

So. If this is all there is then I must work with it. I will speak with the
Voice of the building. There are things I will need to have and to do.

Eldrich knows what he must have but describing it to the Voice named Edgar is
a time consuming process as Eldrich does not know the names of things
anymore.

"Hello Edgar. I am in need of some Materials for Manipulation of matter. Some
may be quite rare. Or expensive. Or both. I will try to describe the
characteristics of each item. Perhaps you can tell me what the name will be
and how hard it will be to acquire."

*Yes sir. I am well informed in the matter of elements and can display them
for you if you wish.*

A periodic table of the elements appears before Eldrich and the tedious work
of identifying the needed components begins . . .

After several hours and a few false starts, the items Eldrich needs are at
hand. Eldrich is surprised both at what was and was not rare. The Blood-Metal
called iron was plentiful. So too the rare granules called salt. The carbon
crystal was harder but in fact could be gotten under the name 'industrial
diamond'. The metal wire called 'silver' was exactly that color and was
ridiculously over-priced. Next to those things the copper bowl and glass lid
were easy to obtain apparently right from the kitchen!

Now with Material in hand the real work of Manipulation could begin.
Eldrich takes off his Amulet of Warding and lays it in the copper bowl.
Next the salt is poured in a connected ring around the outside of the bowl.
This would serve to insulate the Amulet from outside effects while the
changes were being made.

Truly, this would be impossible under the conditions back home. Too much
magic and too little insulation. One error would end my life. But here, it is
only a fraction of the risk and a fraction of the difficulty. Still,
concentration is key. Make no errors Eldrich. It is unlikely you will be
gifted a second time with an Amulet of Warding by your Father.

A moment more Eldrich contemplates the Amulet, remembering the day in his
youth when he received it from his father's own hand. Then he begins the
Manipulation, taking up the steel needle threaded with a short silver wire
and re crafting the Rune upon it., careful not to touch it with his bare
flesh. The hours pass. Finally it is finished. Eldrich lays down the
needle, considerably worn away and now minus the silver thread and exhales
deeply. Done. Eldrich removes the Amulet from the copper bowl and re-fastens
it in place once more.

Invoking the protection with a thought Eldrich is now provided with a covering
of resistive arcane energy for as long as his power can sustain it. No fear
of depletion now.

Eldrich next contemplates what spells he can recall from his memory. Few
indeed come to mind. This would require more meditation. Too his Eldritch Eye
needed attention. It was only partially open and not well focused. No Mage
should walk about so blind! And the Inner Wall was completely gone. That too
would have to be restored but only time and effort could do that. So. much
yet to do.

Listening to Goldstar and Starguard describe the capabilities of their satellite network, Lily is amazed by the technology. She's not really up on technology, but this seems nearly akin to magic to her! Then again, superhuman abilities - including her own - seem almost magical as well; and some are!
Goldstar wrote:"I really can't be sure yet. Other than that we're going to be rendezvousing with a ship of some kind, I'm in the dark as much as the rest of you. Lily nods as she listens. It sounds like they are going to need to be very flexible on this mission. Fortunately, Lily's powers are all about flexibility...

Lily accepts her PDA quietly, pausing to look it over for a few moments. "Will we be receiving any training in the use of these PDA's?" She's not familiar with this model, and Donny's hand-held computer seems kind of complicated.

The cookout went well. Everyone did the meet-and-greet. The kids had fun. The
universe listened for once and nothing came up to spoil the day. Dave even
managed to relax a bit, mingle around and talk sports here and there. The new
hire is the same woman Dave met in his apartment building, the same one that
Brother Basilisk had collected and turned to stone. Some welcome to the city
how-do-you-do!

Sam's restrained himself admirably and withheld all references to particle
physics, BBQ recipes and the proper way to set VCR's. Dave makes a note to
tell him so later.

Yes, all in all a good evening.

And then it was Monday. . .

Dave's routine never varies in the morning. Wake up, get up, quick coffee,
exercise, change for work, eat breakfast, and taxi.

Greet the security at the door, head for cubicle , grab the stack of work and
sort through it, prioritizing and setting it all out in order. Today was
routine. More time intensive than anything else. Background checks for a
client involving new hires. Most of which could be done over the phone. Some
face to face time would still be required, interviews with friends and former
co workers, garnering impressions and such. Legwork. Unless something odd
came out of it (i.e. out of control gambling habits, drug use, criminal
records not already disclosed, or the excessive eating of corn dogs) all the
hires would pass muster. The addition of Whitney Parks to the staff made that part go faster and truth be told a bit smoother. People talk more readily to a pretty face. Next on the to do list was some quality hand to hand
training with the in-house security people. Maintenance for the body, both
theirs and his. Drills, in essence. Still routine. Last work for the day:
papers, papers, and more papers to be filled out, filled up and filed away.

Note to self: carpool with Miss Parks? Ask and see.

The day ends finally. They always do. Nothing turned up in the preliminary
checks but that work would still take time to wind up. Tomorrow and the day
after would see the finish to it. All routine and mundane.

And thanks be for that! Too much excitement adds to the gray hairs on my
head. Healthy happy normalness. What would we do without it?

When it's time to report for Goldstar's secret meeting Dave uses a method similar to his entry into his home after a hard day of heroing. Miniaturization , flight and a few passages underground to throw off pursuit , then into the Seabase docking bay.

Flux listens to the presentation quietly. The news of a jet and submarine were no surprise to him. He remembered them from 'before'. The space ship, well that was news! Advanced PDA's are handed out. Flux looks a bit dubiously at his. He's never used one of any kind before. Commercial models had began appearing in the public sector claiming all sorts of new features in recent years. Flux preferred a notepad for his work.

Sam would be amused right about now. Or envious. Or both.

"I am curious Goldstar. Why is there no info on the ship being delivered? Does anyone know it's status? And yes I'm in."

Not knowing the condition of a ship being dropped of for our use. That sounds odd to me. Can't sit back and be left wondering about that.

“There’s a built in tutorial,” Goldstar answers. “Its touch screen controlled. Just follow the prompts and push the right buttons. We’ve made them as simple as possible.”

“My guess is that Tesseract doesn’t like revealing any more information than she needs to. Or she’s confident that we can deal with whatever is going to happen.”

“My own guess is that this ship is from another point in time that Tesseract wants out of circulation. There’s nothing at the coordinates right now, but based on what I was told there will be in about an hour. It’s possible that we’ll be cleaning up someone else’s mess. Wouldn’t be the first time.”

“If there’s no more questions, let’s get a move on. I want to be at the rendezvous point before whatever it is arrives.”

Flux at work:

During the morning, Flux meets up with Whitney Parks yet again. She’s been assigned to his department. Her training as Private Investigator makes her ideal with handling the ‘leg work’ involved with this job. So it appears that you two will be working together some of the time.

Roll Call: Flux, Frostbite, Goldstar, Menagerie, Stargirl, Tesla, with the Scarlet Sabre and Starguard.

The meeting called by Goldstar breaks up and those going with the solar-powered heroine make their way deeper into the Sea Base to the hanger bays. Those who have been here before will recall that one bay holds the Sea-V, the team submarine. Another holds the Sky-V, the team jet. The Sea-V typically departs the base through the sea doors, while the Sky-V is raised up to the surface. There it vertically takes off and then flies off to its destination.

However, a third hanger is now present, one that no one has been in before! The door is secured and requires a security check before entry is allowed. Goldstar provides the necessary code and bio-scan to open the door.

The first thing you see inside is the Star-V itself! The ship is superficially similar to the Sky-V in shape, but a little larger. As you enter, stairs leading into the belly of the Star-V are extended. At the same time, the hanger door shuts behind you.

But before boarding, Goldstar directs you to a series of lockers along one wall. Some of the lockers have name plates on them and these correspond to each member of the Vigilant. There are extra lockers present that do not have nameplates on them.

“Inside the lockers are the spacesuits I mentioned earlier,” Goldstar states. “Suit up and we’ll get going.”

The spacesuits are constructed of a very light fabric and are comfortable to the touch. There is a large belt with the suits and it looks somehow familiar to both Flux and Tesla, but they cannot place why. There is a bubble helmet at the top, allowing a full 360-degree view. There is a control pad on the back of the left wrist. The suits fit easily over your costumes.

“The controls are simple to operate,” Goldstar explains. “The control pad is used to turn the suit on and off. It can also act as a homing device, providing you directions back to the Star-V. There is an atmosphere on the Star-V, so the suits don’t have to be activated just yet.”

Everyone but Goldstar, Stargirl, Starguard, and Menagerie will suit up and board the Star-V. The inside is very similar to the Sky-V. Up front is the pilot and co-pilot’s chair. Other stations are behind the pilot’s area hugging the walls of the ship leaving a middle walkway. Tesla takes the pilot’s chair, while Goldstar slips into the co-pilots station.

“Buckle up everyone. Once we’ve gone through the pre-flight checks, we’ll be taking off.”

Tesla finds the controls similar enough to the Sky-V that she has little trouble in operating them. The pre-flight checks are done. Goldstar activates the landing platform and the Star—V begins to rise up on an elevated platform. The ceiling overhead opens up and a shaft now leads up to the surface. The platform rises up from the shaft and the Star-V is now about twenty feet above the ocean’s surface.

Vertical thrusters lift the Star-V off the platform where it hovers. The main engines are powered up and the Star-V begins to accelerate forward. The craft begins to rise up and thunders out of the atmosphere. Once in space, the Tesla prepares to activate the Stardrive. Coordinates are locked into the computer and the course is set. The Star-V’s Stardrive kicks in and the ship jumps to light speed. It’s gone in the blink of an eye.

Roll Call: Blackout and Lavender

Back in downtown San Diego, Blackout is out on his regular patrol with Lavender. The evening has been quiet thus far. A mugger was thwarted when he tried to run off with a lady’s purse. Lavender reached out and teleported the mugger back to where he stared and found Blackout suddenly in front of him. It took only a second to deal with the criminal and return what he tried to steal.

Later on in the evening, as night is beginning to fall, Lavender spotted something in the night sky. She thought it was a shooting star at first, but this one seemed to be moving under it’s own power. As it came closer, Lavender realized that it was a flying woman who was surrounded by flames!

She’s an attractive blond haired woman wearing a one-piece blue swimsuit like costume with flame accents in white and orange. She wears matching knee-high boots, elbow length gloves, and a facial mask.

Blackout picks up the approaching woman and prepares himself in case of an attack. Instead, the woman slows and hovers some twenty feet overhead.

“Hello there!”, the hovering woman calls out. “I take it that you’re one of the local heroes here in town? Perhaps you can help me? I’m new in these parts and trying to find some friends of mine. Oh, by the way, I’m Phoenix. You are?”

Roll Call: Backlash, Sea Guard, and Powershift

The trio of heroes watches the Star-V fly off and out of sight on the monitor. Not long after that, Edgar chimes in with a report.

“Pardon the intrusion, but an alarm has sounded at the ADT Building in the Golden Hills district. I though you might like to investigate.”

ADT is familiar to most living in San Diego. It stands for Advance Design Technology a high tech corporation with numerous plants and branches across the globe. ADT does some government work, as do many of the high tech companies with offices in San Diego.

The mention of trouble at ADT gives Backlash a momentary case of déjà vu.

"We better check it out," Powershift suggests.

Out in space, the Star-V seemingly appears out of nowhere. The coordinates where the ship is set to appear are close by. From this position, the sun is huge, filling nearly a quarter of the sky.

“My friends, we have arrived,” Goldstar reports. “We’re actually closer to the sun than Mercury is, about thirty-five million miles out. Radiation readings are intense, but the Star-V and your spacesuits will protect you for the duration of this mission. I’d advise against any long-term exposure. Now we wait.”

GM Notes:

I’m not sure of the location of Eldrich, as he didn’t appear to attend the meeting at the Sea Base.

While the game is set in 1986, I’ve always taken it that the current level of technology is slightly ahead of that in the present real world. So things like cell phones, PDA’s, Ipods, and what not are commonplace.

Now what?

Eldrich Arcane

The work progresses slowly but steadily. The Inner Wall is far from secure, more like an Inner Fence, but the foundation for improvement was laid down and solid. The Eldritch Eye was now open and focused properly. That there was little magic to actually see did not detract from the fact of it's clarity. Many hours had passed and it was now night in the realm. The days seemed faster here then Eldrich was used to, so Eldrich continued with his work not really affected yet by fatigue.

For the next part Eldrich sank deep into a contemplative state to seek out memories buried deeply away from him. Closing his eyes and slipping away to the unconscious parts of the mind seeking magical knowledge and training to help him recover spells lost. Eldrich can see only pieces and fragments of memories, a few seconds here and there disconnected from each other like whirling motes. Moments and events, no faces or names.

That would be the Curse at work. Blocking me from my past. I will overcome this, at a later time. For now, let us delve for the magic lost.

Eldrich turns his awareness away from the personal and toward the impersonal seeking the pure knowing only, without any connections to events or people. In due time and much patience the mystic knowledge begins to form as symbols to be arranged as needed.

Yes, yes. There we have it. Basic, weak but it is there. The Sunglare. The Giant's Slap. The Great Step. The Arcane Bolt. The Nullification. Odd. It feels as though I have done these before, and recently. The Ghost's Hammer. Hmm. Sunder. The Enclosure. The Silent Persuasion. And . . . that is all I can recall. There is nothing more here. The rest is unclear.

Though Eldrich maintains his efforts to recall more, nothing comes of the attempt. Eldrich knows that much time has passed while he has been in this state. Too much longer would be risky and seemingly of no avail. Eldrich looks one last time upon his personal memories, pausing over the bits then releases his concentration and opens his eyes to the world around him. Some thirty or more hours had passed since Eldrich first entered the room to begin his work.

I am hungry. Thirsty too. Sustenance and news and working for my keep are now the order of the day. If I can avoid the man with the demon-gem perhaps the day will go well.

"Edgar. I am thankful for your assistance in providing me with those Materials. I am now prepared to work to earn my keep."

"That is good sir. An alarm has sounded at the ADT building. Would you please join the others as they will be investigating."

The Voice takes me at my word. Immediate work for me! Sustenance will be simple and news brief. Well, no matter.

"Tell the others I am on my way to them. I will collect something to eat on the way. Bread and cheese perhaps? Anything will suffice."

Blackout:

It's a quiet evening, or at least it starts that way. Together he and Lavender easily take care of a mugger, but it's the first taste for her to be working together with him. "That worked well," Blackout tells Lavender after returning the woman's purse.

A little later Blackout picks out someone flying overhead who seems to notice them and turn in their direction.
Blackout picks up the approaching woman and prepares himself in case of an attack. Instead, the woman slows and hovers some twenty feet overhead.

"That we are, Phoenix," Blackout replies, still a bit wary. "I'm Blackout and this is Lavender. I'll help if I can, who are these friends of yours? Local heroes too? Were you supposed to meet up somewhere?"

"Ahh, that sounds good. I will attempt to familiarize myself with the device while we fly out to the rendevous point."

Once they leave the meeting, Goldstar leads them to a new hanger bay that Lily doesn't recall ever being here before! "I could swear I've never seen a hanger bay here before... did it just magically appear?"

The ship itself is pretty impressive, though it bears some resemblance to the Sky-V. While the others suit up and Goldstar reviews the suit controls for them, Lily takes a quick look around. While certainly functional, the ship's interior shows a sense of style, as well.
Goldstar wrote:“Buckle up everyone. Once we’ve gone through the pre-flight checks, we’ll be taking off.”
Quickly picking a seat off to one side, Lily straps in and prepares for takeoff. Once she's ready, she pulls out the computer device Goldstar handed out and begins to work her way through the tutorial.
Goldstar wrote:“My friends, we have arrived,” Goldstar reports. “We’re actually closer to the sun than Mercury is, about thirty-five million miles out. Lily looks up as Goldstar speaks, realizing that it has been only a few moments since they left Earth! Realizing that she's exposed, and not wanting to be mistaken for one of the others, she shifts her form into that of Quasar. Since they seem to have time to waste for now, Menagerie goes back to the tutorial program.
I'm not better than you. I am you.

While he waits he will double check and see if his powers are working correctly.

Waving the other heroes goodbye, Backlash soon hears the Edgar chime in then explain the situation at hand. “ADT… Why does that sound so familiar.. Isn’t that where the large robot came from that tried to trample the city? Or am I losing it? “ he says scratching his head. “No rest for the weary.” he says as he shrugs at Powershift. “Its not like we were expecting a vacation or something.” he adds dryly.

Tesla:

“Inside the lockers are the spacesuits I mentioned earlier,” Goldstar states. “Suit up and we’ll get going.”

The spacesuits are constructed of a very light fabric and are comfortable to the touch. There is a large belt with the suits and it looks somehow familiar to both Flux and Tesla, but they cannot place why. There is a bubble helmet at the top, allowing a full 360-degree view. There is a control pad on the back of the left wrist. The suits fit easily over your costumes.

As Tesla suits up she can't help the feeling of just how familiar the spacesuit is. She thinks about it for a second but then finishes getting ready, pushing the deja vu to the back of her mind for now.

Buckle up everyone.

Tesla runs through the pre-flight checks and quickly starts identifying controls. It's laid out similarly enough to the Sky-V that she instantly feels comfortable controlling the craft. Soon enough they are rising up and Tesla hits full throttle and they thunder out of the atmosphere.

Tesla shuts down everything in the craft they don't need while they sit and wait; things like communications, life support, sensors and manuevering remain on of course. Then she settles back and does just what Goldstar said they must do; wait.

Mom’s meeting drags on a bit while longer and then we’re off to the space ship hanger. Gloria takes a look around, as she really doesn’t have anything else to do. She accepts the gizmo from her mom, but doesn’t really look at it. Gloria pockets the gizmo and she’s thankful that there are at least pockets in outfit!

Once on board the ship, Stargirl will take a seat near the back next to Frosty, as she has no idea how to operate any of these controls. Frosty seems awful nervous about this!

“Chill out,” Gloria says. “You’ll be fine. You think mom would let anything happen to you?”

After a quick flight, we’ve arrived and have to wait some more.

“I knew I should have brought my Ipod with me! Say, I wonder does this PDA hold MP3’s?”

“It’s been here all along,” Goldstar will answer. “But maybe not here in the places that you’ve been. There’s been no use for the Star-V before, so it’s been kept under wraps.”

The flight goes smoothly. The Star-V leaves the atmosphere and makes the short jump to the far side of the sun. The Star-V is primarily designed for flying around the solar system, not between stars. Both Goldstar and Stargirl can fly much faster under their own power than the Star-V.
'Frostbite wrote:“Radiation? What’s next? Intense heat that melt me into a puddle.” he says as he double-checks his suit.
“The sun puts out a tremendous amount of heat and radiation,” Goldstar explains. “It’s essentially a giant nuclear fusion reactor hanging in space. Any physical matter would be vaporized instantly on the surface of the sun. But the space suit will protect you for this mission. Not to worry.”

Goldstar helps shut down the non-essential systems before turning back to the others.

“Once the ship appears, we’ll move closer to give it a look over from the outside. Then we’ll dock, if possible, and move over to it. Edgar will scan the ship in the meantime. Once that is complete, we’ll be given repair instructs on our PDA’s. Our first move will be to secure and explore the ship in case of any left over nasty surprises. Until then, we wait.”
