New Frontiers #108

Duke Relon has arrived in Elcadan! For the last few hours he has been holding audience with the citizens of the city, learning of their troubles and problems. It is clear to those listening in that there is much work to be done in the day and weeks to come.

One such task is to discover the fate of the missing council members. Of the original seven, only two were on hand to meet the Duke upon his arrival: Lord Cranmer and Councilman Adelard. Sir Corley and several others are sent to investigate the others, starting with those who are closest.

Councilman Mortimer is the first. Sherra gains access to his locked up home. Inside, the group discovers Mortimer and his staff all dead. It looks like they all dropped dead suddenly. Mortimer was eating his meal when he died. The food is days old, cold and starting to rot. Others of his staff were right in the middle of various mundane tasks when they fell.

Fearing the worst, the group rushes to the councilman’s Bulema’s home. Once more Sherra provides the means of entry. However, this home is seemingly deserted. That is until Cereld’s magical battleaxe begins to glow! The priest warns that great evil is present!

At Sir Corley’s direction, the group breaks off into two groups with the intent of finding the source of evil. Sir Corley and Regnak go off in one direction, while Chareos, Sherra, and Cereld go in another.
Chareos wrote:Looking to Cereld axe then the priest and drawing his Frostbrand, “Can your axe direct us to it?” he asks curiously as he sees Corley and Rek moving off. Chareos will attempt stay with Cereld and find this evil.
“Yes, it should,” Cereld answers as he keeps his eyes open for trouble. “The Blessing of Heironeous will guide us to our foes!”

Sure enough, the brightness of the glow increases the closer to get to the evil! Suddenly, something that looks very much like a gargoyle leaps out of the shadows at Cereld! It is thin and reptilian, with a long prehensile tail and wings. Its scales are black in color.

Cereld raises his axe and strikes the creature! The blade bites deep, but does not slay the creature. Chareos strikes with his Frostbrand longsword, nearly slicing the creature in half! What does remain vanishes in a puff of sulfur.

“A Black Abishai!” Cereld notes in surprise. “That was no demon. It was a devil!”

It does not go unnoticed that Cereld’s axe continues to glow.

Elsewhere in the house, a similar looking creature assaults Sir Corley and Regnak. The devil tries to claw Sir Corley, but cannot penetrate his armor. Strikes from the two men banish the creature from this plane. Once that is done, the glow of the axe ceases. Bulema’s house has been cleansed of evil.

Back at the Council Hall, the Duke brings the days audiences to an end. He promises that he will listen to the citizen tomorrow. But for now he is weary and wishes to retire for the evening. He thanks everyone for their observations and opinions and will take them to heart. Jallarzi will teleport the Duke directly to her estate for the evening. There he will have supper and will be safe thanks to the mansions magical protections.

Sir Corley and those with him return to report their findings. Mortimer has been murdered and Bulema is missing. But two Black Abishai were found and banished in his home! It is puzzling that devils were found there, as they and demons do not mix in the least.
Try it and find out!

GM Notes:

You have a few hours before night falls to attend to some personal matters should you choose to do so. There has been talk of visiting the Mage Guild/Temple of Mystra, paying last respects to Mother Boelle among other things. You can also check out Pander’s home in New Town, as he is the only other missing councilman who does not have a home in the noble district.

Squire Moonshadow will inquire as to Lyonessa’s plans. He has no intention of allowing her to be unescorted in this potentially dangerous city.

So who’s going where and what are you doing there?

Now what?

Sir Corley

Post by Corley »

Sir Corley:
Chareos wrote:“Or demons.” He says seriously looking to the others. "After all the Deville's do mettle in such affairs..."
“Indeed they do, Lord Chareos,” Sir Corley will nod in agreement. “However, this is too mundane to be their doing. Demons seek to cause terror and chaos. Simply have these people drop dead without a mark on them does not seem demonic. Now if they has been ripped limb from limb and the home coated with blood, I might think otherwise.”
Regnak wrote:“Could be both,” he says looking towards the food upon the table. Making his way to it he will rest his hands a few inches above the dish, to see how warm it is. “Whomever did this did so quickly, nothing is disturbed.”
“Clearly the work of a professional,” Sir Corley notes with dismay. “Perhaps the priests will be able to learn something later from these unfortunate souls.”

Later on Sir Corley will ask that one of the priests use a Speak with Dead spell to find out what transpired here.

At the next home, Cereld’s axe begins to glow indicating that evil is a foot.
Regnak wrote:“Be mindful, we know not what we are dealing with.”
“Neither does our foe,” Sir Corley confidently answers.

The group splits up and soon after sounds of combat are heard. Suddenly, a gargoyle-like creature leaps to attack! Sir Corley’s Greatsword slices through the creature and it is banished with Regnak’s assistance.

“Not much of a threat to us,” Sir Corley notes.

Cereld announces that the home is cleansed of evil and reveals that the creatures were devils!
Cereld wrote:“A Black Abishai!” Cereld notes in surprise. “That was no demon. It was a devil!”
“It was my understanding that demons and devils do not cooperate amongst themselves. Then why were such creatures here? Could we be dealing with a threat that is not connected to the vile Deville’s? A most troubling thought.”

Returning to the Council Hall, Sir Corley reports their findings. The Duke finishes up his audiences and retires for the evening. The Lady Sallavarian teleports him to her estate, thus freeing up the other Guardians for other activities. Sir Corley will confer with Sir Acerion on matters before speaking to the group as a whole.

“With the Duke secured, we can now concentrate on other matters,” Sir Corley announces. “Should you choose to do so, you can relax or take care of any pressing tasks until night fall. At that time return to the Sallavarian Estate and we’ll begin our assault on the castle.”

“In the meantime, I will lead a group to learn the situation at Pander’s residence in New Town. There might be more devils there in need of banishing. After that, I will return to the Sallavarian Estate for supper and to plan the assault.”

“Lady Sherra, will you accompany us once more? We may need your skills to gain entry.”

Before departing, Sir Corley will enquire of the High Priests here if any of them knows if there maps to the Duke’s Castle. Having such information before hand would be extremely helpful.

Once those journeying with him to Pander’s home are ready, Sir Corley will begin the ride into New Town.

Argent:

The long, torturous day finally nears an end! The Duke excuses himself for the evening and departs with Jallarzi. Finally, we can get on to something more interesting!
Sir Corley wrote:“With the Duke secured, we can now concentrate on other matters,” Sir Corley announces.

“I’m not exactly dressed from battle, so I think I’ll pass on going devil hunting for now. I think I’ll check out the mage guild instead. I’ll then meet you later at Jallarzi’s Estate and be suitably attired.”

Stepping up to Chareos, Argent will say, “What are your plans? Going to come with me to the guild or would you rather be out hunting devils?”

“You want to tag along too, Lyonessa?”

The Duke’s day ends, as do our guard responsibilities.

“I think I will return to my temple for a time,” Ivy will say when asked. “I will meet you later this evening at the estate.”

Turning to Sir Acerion she will add, “I you wish to go on the hunt, I would understand. Perhaps stop at the temple after you are finished and I will ride out to the estate with you.”
Later on Sir Corley will ask that one of the priests use a Speak with Dead spell to find out what transpired here.
“I do have one available,” Ivy will mention. “I had one ready for this morning, but it wasn’t needed. I can stop at the house and try it before going to the temple.”

Serena:

Sir Corley explains that they plan on using the Blackhawk to bypass the castle’s walls so that the situation with the guards can be resolved.

“Seems reasonable to me,” Serena will agree. “I’ll be ready to pilot the Blackhawk on the mission. The only matter that needs to be resolved is what do you wish for me to do with the ship once you’ve disembarked?”

We have some free time to spend before the mission, so Serena will go to the Mystran Temple to relax and pray.

“Brother Regnak, will you join me or are you committed to accompanying Sir Corley?”

Crysania:

Crysania is a bit more at ease once the Duke is safely away. What Sir Corley discovers does cause her worry.

“Black Abishai you say? Those are more commonly associated as lackeys of the Herald of Hell! The temple in New Keln was guarded by such creatures! Could it be that these four allied councilmen are agents of the Herald of Hell?”
Sir Corley wrote:“In the meantime, I will lead a group to learn the situation at Pander’s residence in New Town. There might be more devils there in need of banishing. After that, I will return to the Sallavarian Estate for supper and to plan the assault.”
“I will join you, Sir Corley. If agents of the enemy of Heironeous are involved in this, then they must be found and dealt with!”
Before departing, Sir Corley will enquire of the High Priests here if any of them knows if there maps to the Duke’s Castle. Having such information before hand would be extremely helpful.
“Brother Warton, am I incorrect in recalling that the temple has maps to the Duke’s Palace in case of an emergency? If so, please retrieve them. We’ll collect them after we have dealt with the situation at Pander’s home. I’ll be along the way back to the Lady Sallavarian’s Estate.”

Once we are ready, Crysania will ride along behind Sir Corley towards Pander’s home.

Cereld:

Cereld’s axe, the Blessing of Heironeous begins to glow not long after we enter Bulema’s house. It only glows like that when a great extra-dimensional evil is present, be it demonic or diabolical.

“And it’s not alone!”

However, the other culprit is quickly found and banished.
Sir Corley wrote:“It was my understanding that demons and devils do not cooperate amongst themselves. Then why were such creatures here? Could we be dealing with a threat that is not connected to the vile Deville’s? A most troubling thought.”
“You understand correctly,” Cereld adds. “It is said that demons and devils are locked in eternal conflict, a blood war that spans the lower plans. This does not make sense.”

Later, Sir Corley reports our findings to the new Duke and his associates.
Crysania wrote:“Black Abishai you say? Those are more commonly associated as lackeys of the Herald of Hell! The temple in New Keln was guarded by such creatures! Could it be that these four allied councilmen are agents of the Herald of Hell?”
“Aye, that was my first thought, Sister Crysania,” Cereld notes. “Regardless, we must continue to search for the councilmen. I am ready to ride when you are Sir Acerion.”

Acerion

Post by Acerion »

Sir Acerion:

The day is long and though largely uneventful, Acerion does get to see some of the more mundane but still important tasks that rulers must conduct. While hardly as exciting as adventuring, the common folk have a right to be heard and seek help in their disputes. There are moments that he can spend with Ivy, and he looks forward to her questions.

Occasionally there is some small talk going on while the Duke is holding court.

“Is this what it’s like?” Ivy will ask Sir Acerion. “I mean to be a ruler over a city like the Duke is. Having to listen what problem’s its citizens have?”

"It would seem so," Acerion replies. "I'm sure an official could be posted instead of a direct audience like this, but I think it gives the people faith in their ruler for him to take the time to listen and make a ruling on such matters personally. We must remember that for a lot of these folk, their problems are large in the scope of their lives."

Acerion will listen with a grim demeanor to what Sir Corley had encountered in the estates. What he proposes is exactly what the paladin would do. These devils can not be allowed to continue to exist here.

Turning to Sir Acerion she will add, “I you wish to go on the hunt, I would understand. Perhaps stop at the temple after you are finished and I will ride out to the estate with you.”

"Yes, I must see this through," Acerion replies. "It is most troubling." After a moment he adds, "I will meet you at the temple. A ride together would be most pleasant."

“Aye, that was my first thought, Sister Crysania,” Cereld notes. “Regardless, we must continue to search for the councilmen. I am ready to ride when you are Sir Acerion.”

"I am ready if the others are ready," Acerion says. "Those abominations have existed on our plane for far too long already."

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:

Sherra wasn't entirely sure what she would find as she makes short work of the door's lock, but it was hardly the grim scene that awaits them. It is most peculiar how they seemingly died in the middle of ordinary activities. However, the scene is much more dangerous at Bulema's home.

Sherra draws her daggers and makes her way following Cereld's glowing axe. Before she can react, a creature is upon them and cut down by the other two. She stares at the remaining puff of smoke while Cereld announces the foe was a devil and not a demon like they had suspected it might have been.

They return so that Corley can make his report and then him and Acerion plan to go to Pander's home to investigate. Corley looks to include Sherra in on the task.

"Certainly," Sherra agrees and asks a question since she knows nothing of devils. "It makes me wonder though where everyone in Bulema's home went to. Were they kidnapped by those devils or had they fled before?"

Sherra doesn't need to do anything further to be ready to go to Pander's home, so she waits for the others. She will do the same thing once they do reach the residence, checking for traps before attempting to gain entry.

Post Continued:

Freed from the task of guarding Duke Relon, the Guardians and their Seeker allies prepare their next move. A large group will be riding to Pander’s home to see what lurks there, while others will be going to the Mage Guild/Temple of Mystra. Still others have personal matters to deal with.
Crysania wrote:“Brother Warton, am I incorrect in recalling that the temple has maps to the Duke’s Palace in case of an emergency? If so, please retrieve them. We’ll collect them after we have dealt with the situation at Pander’s home. I’ll be along the way back to the Lady Sallavarian’s Estate.”
“You are correct, Sister Crysania. I will have them retrieved and made ready for you upon your return. Strike down any foes you find in Pander’s home!”

The group begins to split up. Sir Corley mounts up and heads south, followed closely by Sir Acerion, Sherra, Crysania, Cereld, and the rest of the reformed Seekers.

Ivy, accompanied by Sir Acerion’s Squires, makes her way to Mortimer’s home with the intent of casting Speak with Dead so that what really happened can be revealed.

Another large group walks to the large tower in the middle of old town. It is home to both the Mage Guild and the Temple of Mystra. Serena and Argent lead the way, followed by Chareos, Regnak, Lyonessa, and Myveria. Squire Moonshadow and Phelan follow as well, guarding Lyonessa and Myveria.

The procession of guards that accompanied the Duke into town begins their journey back to the Sallavarian Estate.

Mage Guild/Temple of Mystra:

A great tower sits in the middle of Old Town. It is some fifty feet wide at the base and rises six stories high. Multiple Continual Light spells were cast at the peak, creating a sort of lighthouse. The tower is the home to all things magical in Elcadan. It houses not only the Mage Guild, but the Temple of Mystra as well.

Just inside the entrance is a reception area, complete with a receptionist. Armed dwarves in uniforms stand guard at the inner entryway. The receptionist will great each of you upon arrival.

“Welcome back, Lady Serena and Lady Argent,” the receptionist will say. Followers of Mystra are commonly known as Lords and Ladies of Mystery, so in this case Lord or Lady is not a noble designation. Seeing that Regnak and Lyonessa are Priests of Mystra, the receptionist will allow them access immediately. Only Chareos is unknown to the receptionist, but he will be allowed entry, as he is currently a guest of members of the guild and the temple.

Not being spellcasters, Squire Moonshadow and Phelan will not be allowed to go any further.

Argent will state that she’d like to join the Guild at this time, but the confused receptionist will answer, “But Lady Argent, you are already a member of the Guild. You joined a few weeks ago. Although I am surprised to see you back from the swamp so soon. I trust your adventure there went well?”

The receptionist will run down what guild membership entails. The guild is open to mages of all races and social outlooks. However, those who are undisputedly evil and would pervert membership to their own ends will be turned away. Membership costs 100 gp per year, but there are many perks.

Guild members have a discount on items purchased at the guild. The guild also carries an extensive stock of items needed to cast certain magical spells. The Guild has several research laboratories that can be rented out for weeks at a time. The Guild stocks and maintains a Magic Shop. They buy and sell magic items. Naturally, those items favored by mages are the most expensive and most rare.

The greatest advantage is the Library. This huge area contains many tomes on the nature of magic. More importantly, huge quantities of spells are in the library. Guild members can buy Spells out of the spell library. This is VERY expensive!

There is also an alchemist employed at the Guild. The last area of interest is the Wizards Familiar, an in-Guild tavern for mages only.

Applicants to the Guild will be tested. The tests serve to make sure the prospective applicant is a true mage.

Information sharing with the Guild is strongly suggested. How much your discount is proportional to how much you do for the Guild!

The ground floor holds the Wizard’s Familiar, a laid back tavern for spellcasters. Food and drink can be had here.

The second floor contains a series of guest rooms that can be rented out to spellcasters.

The third is reserved for most guild functions. The supply shop and magic items shop are located here. The Guildhall is here as well.

The forth floor holds various laboratories that can be rented for spell and magic item research.

The entire fifth floor is open and holds the Temple of Mystra. The temple is circular with a small stage in the center. At the center of the temple is an altar and a statue of Mystra herself. The statue glows with blue and white energy, Mageglow as the affect is commonly known. The glow is said to represent the faith of those in their goddess. Priests of Mystra are said to be able to invoke the same affect on their bodies for a time.

The sixth floor is a private level reserved for those who make the tower their home, such as the Guildmaster and the High Priest and other acolytes of the temple.

The great library is located in the basement.

What would you like to do at the Mage Guild/Temple of Mystra?

Ivy:

Elsewhere in town, Ivy makes her way to Mortimer’s home. Sir Acerion’s Squires accompany the priestess on her trek.

Mortimer’s home is much like it was found. The bodies have begun to rot and decompose. It is clear that they’ve been dead for many days now. Reaching Mortimer’s body, Ivy casts her spell.

When questioned, Mortimer will say, “I was murdered by Ulana, the so-called Black Widow of Elcadan, at the request of Furnow. I learned their secret and had to be silenced. They are all Priests of Mammon!”

The name is familiar to Ivy. Ulana is the sister of Furnow, the former head of the City Council and the richest man in Elcadan. Ulana’s husband died under mysterious circumstances many years ago. There were rumors of poison being involved, but nothing was ever proven.

However, just who this Mammon is eludes Ivy.

Pander’s Home:

To the south, a procession of riders head towards Pander’s Mansion. The crowd parts to allow passage, but they all seem concerned about such a large group heading towards Pander’s home.

Once there, Sherra goes to work. A poison needle trap is found on the front door lock, but it is easily circumvented. Fearing that more traps might be present, Crysania casts Find Traps.

Pander’s home, also called the Streelcove, is a magnificent sight. The outside is polished stone that reflects light. It stands three stories high.

The inside of the home is just as grand. Elegant woods are highly polished and most of the fittings are golden. The home is immaculate and elegant. It’s also mysteriously deserted, but a few other traps are found and negated.

As the group enters the basement area of the mansion, Cereld’s Axe begins to glow once more, alerting you to the presence of evil creatures nearby! Sir Acerion will sense great evil as well.

Sherra finds a secret door and a hidden chamber stands revealed! Inside the chamber are more Abishai, this time green in color. There are four of the foul creatures and the forces of good easily dispatch them. The Abishai are quickly banished in puffs of sulfur.

Looking around, you realize that this hidden chamber is a shrine of some kind. There is a golden altar that radiates evil. Standing behind the altar is a hideous golden statue. It’s some bloated, demonic form with wings. The face has pointed ears, horns, an overly large brow and a mouth filled with sharp teeth. While the statue is pure gold, the wings are comprised of small rubies. There is no question that this being is some sort of lower plane evil.

“Mammon!” Crysania gasps. “Pander, and those allied with him must be followers of Mammon!”

Seeing the confusion in the eyes of many present, she adds, “Mammon is a lesser power, but sometimes worshiped by evil men as the God of Greed and Avarice! He is a powerful devil! This place must be destroyed!”

After finishing up at the Pander’s Home, the group will return to the Salavarian Estate. Crysania will stop at Heironeous’ temple and Warton will have maps of the Duke’s Fortress ready for her. Sir Acerion stops at Azrella’s temple to retrieve Ivy.

Shortly after that, everyone is at the Sallavarian Estate enjoying dinner and making your plans on the raid to come.

Argent:

Arm and arm with Chareos, Argent and Serena lead the small group to the Mage Guild. Argent has been here a few times before, primarily as a guest of Jallarzi when she was still an apprentice. As such, she hasn’t seen all that’s in the tower. While already being a member of the Karn’s Keep Mage Guild, belonging to the older Elcadan chapter would be a boon. Thus Argent intends to apply for membership.
Argent is momentarily surprised to be addressed as Lady Argent, but shrugs it off. Perhaps the receptionist remembers her from earlier visits with Jallarzi?
Argent will state that she’d like to join the Guild at this time, but the confused receptionist will answer, “But Lady Argent, you are already a member of the Guild. You joined a few weeks ago. Although I am surprised to see you back from the swamp so soon. I trust your adventure there went well?”
“I’m already member?” Argent parrots, a bit dumbfounded. “Right! It slipped my mind is all. The swamp? It was wasn’t as exciting as suggested.”

“It has to be her,” Argent thinks to herself. “It’s the only thing that makes sense.”

“Well, anyway,” Argent continues out loud, “It seems that you are already familiar with Serena. Regnak here is also a member of the Mystran faith. Lady Lyonessa here is a Songstress of Mystra. Perhaps you’ve heard of her? My companion here is a mage of some skill, Lord Chareos. I was going to show him around a bit.”

Once past the receptionist area, Argent and Chareos go off on their own while the priests head up to their temple. Argent takes the time to go over what she remembers of the place.

“The Wizard’s Familiar is a good place to unwind, have supper and a drink. Most of the actual Guild is on the third floor. That’s where the supplies and magic items can be bought and traded. I wouldn’t concern yourself with the magic item shop. Any good mage item is probably long gone, but you might find one for a warrior. The cost is probably outrageous, however!”

“Research labs are on the fourth floor with the Temple on the fifth. Let’s stop and pay our respects.”

Once at the temple, Argent will pay her respects and recite a small prayer to Mystra she learned from Jallarzi. After that, she’ll suggest heading down to the Wizard’s Familiar for a drink before returning to Jallarzi’s Estate. It’ll give the couple the chance to be alone and chat.

Once back at the Estate, Argent changes into her adventuring attire; black riding trousers, black blouse, covered by her Cloak of Displacement. She wears her Boots of Warmth, the Tiara of Absorption and carries her Staff of Power. After eating, she’ll join the others in preparing for the assault. The invoker if confident that her role in this will be minor, as they are not looking to fatally harm the guards.

“I can cast Fly upon myself as we draw near,” Argent will say. “That’ll give me manoeuvrability. Unfortunately, I don’t have many ‘gentle’ battle spells apart from Web, so I can serve as a diversion. My cloak should protect me form missile attacks and if magic should come my way, I can absorb it.”

Right before the attack begins Argent will cast Fly and Halo of Eyes on herself. Then she’ll move away from the others and try any ranged attacks to her. If a large group of guards is found and conditions favor it, Argent will Web them.

Serena:

Serena will wish the riders well, saying a prayer to the Lady of Mysteries for their success. Then along with the Invoker Argent escorts the others to the Temple of Mystra.

“In a city of this size, it is not uncommon for a Mage Guild and Temple to be combined. After all, casting skill is what matters when it comes to being a member of the church, not if you’re a true priest or not.”
“Thank you,” Serena states graciously. She listens as Argent responds, seemingly surprised to discover that she’s already a member of the guild, but does not comment on it. Perhaps her mentor had something to do with it.

Turning to Regnak and Lyonessa, Serena will say, “Come, I will show you to the temple proper. You’ll note that the guards are all dwarves. They were chosen for this task since they are more resistant to magic than most other races.”
“Not the grandest or largest place of worship that I have seen, but it does have a charm to it. See the glow on the Statue of Mystra? Is either of you familiar with Mageglow? No? It is something we priests of Mystra can create with training and prayer. We are able to create the glow via our connection to Mystra. It has no real affect, but can serve as a light source if need be. It is also a good test to know if another priest really is true to Mystra.”

To demonstrate, Serena causes her hand to glow blue and white, mimicking the statue.

“But the Mageglow does far more than that. The statue is the focus of the faithfuls devotion. What you are seeing is our faith in Mystra being manifested. The High Priest can use this energy to create protections for the temple as a whole. The process is not all that similar to that of Spell Engine, but instead of being powered by magic, it is powered by faith. You will only see this kind of protections in larger temples where there are enough faithful present.”

To Regnak she’ll add, “I am sure that this is new to you, Brother Regnak and what you are missing by not visiting a larger temple from time to time. Please look around and enjoy yourselves. I wish to take some time and pray to our Goddess.”

Afterwards, Serena will join the others back at the Estate. For the most part she’ll lurk behind the scenes during the battle, using her spells as necessary. She’ll try not to hurt the guards.

Ivy:
Sir Acerion wrote:"It would seem so," Acerion replies. "I'm sure an official could be posted instead of a direct audience like this, but I think it gives the people faith in their ruler for him to take the time to listen and make a ruling on such matters personally. We must remember that for a lot of these folk, their problems are large in the scope of their lives."
“That makes sense and has been my experience as well. I’ve spent most of my life among the downtrodden, so the life of a noble is unfamiliar at best.”
Sir Acerion wrote:"Yes, I must see this through," Acerion replies. "It is most troubling." After a moment he adds, "I will meet you at the temple. A ride together would be most pleasant."
“I thought as much,” Ivy says with a sigh. “I will be waiting for you.”

Much to her surprise, Squire Jocasta follows Ivy to Mortimer’s dwelling.

“This really isn’t necessary…,” Ivy starts to object.

“I have my orders, Lady Ivy,” Jocasta answers. “I will not shirk my duty to protect you from any potential harm.”

“I know. I’m just not accustomed to being protected.”

Mortimer’s home is soon reached. The smell of death assaults Ivy’s senses as she draws closer. She’ll move through the house, saying a prayer for each unfortunate soul that they reach the afterlife safely. Lastly she’ll cast Speak with Dead on Mortimer.

“That is most troubling, Lady Ivy,” Squire Jocasta states.

“That it is. I’ve heard of Ulana, a wealthy socialite here in Elcadan. Her brother was the head of the City Council, so she was at the center of political and social circles. That she is a murderess is troubling! Unfortunately, I am unfamiliar with this Mammon they follow. Must not be a common god, but I doubt he is one that Azrella would approve of.”

From there, Ivy walks to her home temple. There she’ll grieve some more and try to calm the children there. This has been a trying time for all involved.

Sir Acerion returns and she’ll escort her beloved to Mother Boelle’s resting place.

“The body will be cremated in a few days, in accordance to our faith. There is a special place outside the city where this is done. A funeral procession will leave the Temple and pass through the town. Will you ride with me on this somber journey, my love?”

That night at the Sallavarian Estate a planning session is held. “I have a few useful spells, but for the most part I’ll have to act as support, ensuring that no one needlessly perishes. I pray that this whole affair can be resolved with as little loss of life as possible.”

Chareos
“Indeed they do, Lord Chareos,” Sir Corley will nod in agreement. “However, this is too mundane to be their doing. Demons seek to cause terror and chaos. Simply have these people drop dead without a mark on them does not seem demonic. Now if they has been ripped limb from limb and the home coated with blood, I might think otherwise.”
“Maybe they had a change of heart, if they had one.” He says with a smirk
“A Black Abishai!” Cereld notes in surprise. “That was no demon. It was a devil!”
Coughing slightly from the sulfur, Chareos looks to Cereld. “Why are there Devils in Elcadan?! He asks as Cereld’s axe still glows.
Seeking the source out the pair find Sir Corley and Regnak amongs the smell of sulfur. “You understand correctly,” Cereld adds. “It is said that demons and devils are locked in eternal conflict, a blood war that spans the lower plans. This does not make sense.”
“But don’t they both wish to instill terror and discord?” he asks curiously. “Surely there is no better place then here.” He adds grimly.

Argent said:

Stepping up to Chareos, Argent will say, “What are your plans? Going to come with me to the guild or would you rather be out hunting devils?”

“The others are fully capable of handling the situation without me. Besides we may find things of use within the Guild for the coming trials.”

Later on at the Mage Guild:
Argent will state that she’d like to join the Guild at this time, but the confused receptionist will answer, “But Lady Argent, you are already a member of the Guild. You joined a few weeks ago. Although I am surprised to see you back from the swamp so soon. I trust your adventure there went well?”

“I’m already member?” Argent parrots, a bit dumbfounded. “Right! It slipped my mind is all. The swamp? It was wasn’t as exciting as suggested.”
Chareos raises a curious eyebrow as he listens to this mere fact. There is something she is keeping to herself, so be it.
“There is no harm in looking.” He says in return.

After seeing the guild Chareos will go to the receptionist and ask for membership. He is curious to see how the testing will go as well as just who will be testing him.

“Improved invisibility may be of use as well, or perhaps darkness might be of help. Are there any mages held within those walls he asks curiously.”
To serve and protect those who cannot.

Lyonessa:

Stepping up to Chareos, Argent will say, “What are your plans? Going to come with me to the guild or would you rather be out hunting devils?”

“You want to tag along too, Lyonessa?”

"Sure, I'll go," Lyonessa says. "I haven't been of much use against things from other planes anyway."

Squire Moonshadow will inquire as to Lyonessa’s plans. He has no intention of allowing her to be unescorted in this potentially dangerous city.

"It looks like I'll be going to the guild and the temple," Lyonessa tells her new guardian angel. "You don't have to go if you're needed elsewhere, but it's sweet of you to be so concerned." Moonshadow does go with them, even though he can't get too far into the guild.

Not being spellcasters, Squire Moonshadow and Phelan will not be allowed to go any further.

"It'll be okay," Lyonessa reassures Moonshadow. "Nothing will happen to me here."

Turning to Regnak and Lyonessa, Serena will say, “Come, I will show you to the temple proper. You’ll note that the guards are all dwarves. They were chosen for this task since they are more resistant to magic than most other races.”

"That makes a lot of sense," Lyonessa says as she looks around, marvelling at what she sees.

Lyonessa feels a bit like a novice as Serena explains all of this. Still, an opportunity to learn shouldn't be passed up, so she pays attention. She plans to spend some time here as well after Serena leaves them. Quietly she will find a place and pray, thanking her goddess for all that she has been shown and for letting her continue to be a voice for her.

Eventually she will return to Moonshadow to be escorted back. "Sorry for being away for so long, but the temple was wonderous and I am so glad to have gone," Lyonessa says.

For the coming battle, Lyonessa will stick to her spells, hoping to charm or hypnotize any guards so as not to kill them. She will also be asking Dusk to scout out any areas before they arrive and keep an eye on things.

Cereld wrote:"You understand correctly," Cereld adds. "It is said that demons and devils are locked in eternal conflict, a blood war that spans the lower plans. This does not make sense."
Crysania wrote:"Black Abishai you say? Those are more commonly associated as lackeys of the Herald of Hell! The temple in New Keln was guarded by such creatures! Could it be that these four allied councilmen are agents of the Herald of Hell?"
Sir Corley listens as what these evil creatures are is revealed and that they are favored among the Hextorites. Still the existence of both devils and demons in Elcadan is troubling.

“At this point, anything is possible. We’ll ask one of these councilmen when we catch up to them about their allegiances.”
Sir Acerion wrote:"I am ready if the others are ready," Acerion says. "Those abominations have existed on our plane for far too long already."
“Well put, Sir Acerion. Let us ride and begin the process of violently removing these evil denizens from Elcadan!”
Lady Ivy wrote:"I do have one available," Ivy will mention. "I had one ready for this morning, but it wasn't needed. I can stop at the house and try it before going to the temple."
“That would be most appreciated, Lady Ivy. Thank you.”
Lady Serena wrote:"Seems reasonable to me," Serena will agree. "I'll be ready to pilot the Blackhawk on the mission. The only matter that needs to be resolved is what do you wish for me to do with the ship once you've disembarked?"
Sir Corley thinks for a moment before answering. “Was it not said that the Duke has a private dock? That would be the best place to set the Blackhawk down. Unless someone has a better suggestion?”
Lady Sherra wrote:"Certainly," Sherra agrees and asks a question since she knows nothing of devils. "It makes me wonder though where everyone in Bulema's home went to. Were they kidnapped by those devils or had they fled before?"
“Another mystery for us to unravel,” is Sir Corley’s comment on the subject.
Warton wrote:"You are correct, Sister Crysania. I will have them retrieved and made ready for you upon your return. Strike down any foes you find in Pander's home!"
“Thank you, Warton. That will make the task to come easier. Perhaps you and your allies could be on hand this evening as well. If the guards attention is focused on the main entryways, then it’ll make your task of coming in from the flank even easier.”

Sir Corley:

Mounting up, the group begins the ride to the south with Lady Sherra in the lead. The citizens seem concerned at such a large group riding into this area of town.

Feeling that something needs to be said, Sir Corley will say. “By the order of the new Duke of Elcadan, we seeing what has happened to Pander, since he seems to be missing for several days now.”

The councilman’s home is an impressive sight. It speaks to wealth and power, which may not be something in this Pander’s favor. Lady Sherra finds a poisonous needle in the lock of the front door, a very odd thing to find! Several more traps are discovered and disarmed as we explore the elegant dwelling.

But it is in the basement where things get interesting. Cereld of Heironeous’ axe begins to glow, signifying that something exceptionally evil is close by. Sir Acerion senses something amiss as well. Brandishing his weapon, Sir Corley prepares for whatever is to come.

A hidden chamber is discovered and green skinned reptilian like creatures are released! These are called Green Abishai. Fortunately, they are easily dealt. But what else is found in this hidden chamber is an even greater concern.

“This Mammon is unknown to me,” Sir Corley will admit. “But clearly he is evil and the presence of his followers explains the devils we’ve encountered thus far. They must have been left here to slay the unwary that came searching for these men. The only reason that comes to mind as to why they are gone is that they fled to avoid capture and prosecution. Honor, apparently, is not important to those who follow greed and avarice. The question know is where did they go and what new evils are they plotting?”

Sir Corley does not object to the devilish statue and altar being destroyed. When they return to the Heironeous Temple, we’ll inquire of Warton will be able to post guards at both the councilman’s homes just in case they return. He’ll also suggest that the homes of the other councilman be avoided for now. They also might be trapped and occupied by other terrors.

Later, Lady Ivy will report that Mortimer believed that Ulana, the sister of Furnow, poisoned him. Sir Corley will suggest that the home of this Ulana also be investigated. If she is in league with the others, then she is probably long gone too. What a nest of vipers this city is turning out to be!

Sir Corley:

Once back at the Sallavarian Estate, Sir Corley will report his findings to the Duke and those with him.

“Your Grace, it seems that Mortimer was murdered by the alliance of the other four councilmen as he learned that they were all followers of the God of Greed and Avarice. Mortimer’s spirit named Furnow’s sister Ulana as his killer via poison. We’ve found lesser devils in two of the councilman’s homes and a shrine to this foul god concealed in Pander’s Basement.”

“This evening we will retake the Duke’s Castle from the misguided city guard. Given what we’ve found thus far, I am sure that there will be surprises in the castle waiting to be discovered. We’ll try to defeat the guards with as little bloodshed as possible. Assuming that all goes well there, then we’ll explore the estates of the remaining councilmen and deal with whatever threats they left behind.”

Not long after that, Sir Corley dines and pours over the maps provided by Warton. He confides with Sir Acerion on a plan.

“It seems simple enough to me. These guards are probably much like those slavers we encountered on the Blackhawk. Probably one or two of them are under the thrall of the Devillie’s while the others are regular soldiers forced to follow orders. Given our superior force, it should be easy enough to rout or neutralize them. That will leave the guard captains and whatever other enemy forces entrenched there to deal with.”

Later as we gather to plan the assault.

“Those suggestions are fine with me,” Sir Corley will say. “Lady Lyonessa, your skills will be pivotal in this sortie as we do not wish to cause serious harm to these men. Use your magic to neutralize these men at your discretion.”

“Given our mode of travel, we have multiple entrances to launch our attack,” Sir Corley states as he points to the castle map. “Lady Argent, and those who will be using flying magic, your task will be to clear the tall tower. There’s probably at least one guard on duty there.”

“The rest of us will enter here, at the parapet right below the tall tower. It’s large enough for us to cross over from the ship to the castle without being in each other’s way. From there, we advance down through the castle, dealing with whatever threats are presented to us. It is down on the third level where we’ll gain access to the whole castle. There are only a few chambers we’ll have to backtrack to explore. Most likely we’ll be splitting up into smaller forces once we are inside. We’ll just have to see what’s waiting for us before making any further plans.”

“Any questions?”

“Lady Serena, I think we are ready to depart.”

Crysania:
Cereld wrote:"Aye, that was my first thought, Sister Crysania," Cereld notes. "Regardless, we must continue to search for the councilmen. I am ready to ride when you are Sir Acerion."
“Let’s get to the bottom of this right away,” Crysania agrees. “Not only have demons been loosed in Elcadan, but it seems Devils as well! It speaks poorly to our order to have let this go on unnoticed right in front of us. We have much to answer for, as do those who let this travesty take place.”
Warton wrote:"You are correct, Sister Crysania. I will have them retrieved and made ready for you upon your return. Strike down any foes you find in Pander's home!"
“Very good, Brother Warton. None of the enemy will survive the battle to come. This I promise you.”

Pander’s dwelling is reached. Sherra proves herself good a finding traps and opening locks. Crysania suspected that the dark haired woman had thief talents before, but since she has never seen Sherra use them for personal gain before, makes no comment on it.

“I’ll cast Find Traps,” Crysania announces. “If there is one at the front door, there might be more inside.”

More traps are found, but easily negated. Our explorations lead us to the basement where Cereld’s magical battleaxe begins to glow revealing that evil is near! Sherra finds a concealed door and an evil shrine lurks behind it! Green Abishai are unleashed, but quickly defeated by the power of Heironeous.
Crysania is bury her own axe deep into the altar and once sufficiently destroyed will pour holy water on it to finish the task. The horrific statues soon follows.
Sir Corley wrote:“This Mammon is unknown to me,” Sir Corley will admit.
“Probably scurried away like the rodents that they are,” Crysania will answer, anger thick in her voice. “Wealth and gold is all that matters to them. It is said that followers of Mammon buy their way into his afterlife and that he grants them powers in exchange for gold. They must have known that their years of milking this city dry was over with and fled to safer climes. They must be found and tried for the crimes they’ve committed upon the City of Elcadan!”

Warton has the castle maps that Crysania requested ready upon our return. Sir Corley lays out his plan for the assault on the castle.

“This shouldn’t be too tough,” Crysania agrees. “With the might and magic we have gathered here, we could engage a small army let alone a garrison of nervous and frightened guards. My only concern is what evil the Deville’s left behind. We must be prepared for anything.”

Crysania is ready to go when instructed.

Chareos wrote:Coughing slightly from the sulphur, Chareos looks to Cereld. “Why are there Devils in Elcadan?!” He asks as Cereld’s axe still glows.
“Why indeed,” Cereld agrees solemnly. “We’ll have to ask the next one we meet.”
Chareos wrote:“But don’t they both wish to install terror and discord?” he asks curiously. “Surely there is no better place then here.” He adds grimly.
“I suppose that you are correct, my friend,” Cereld nods. “It’s not so much that their goals are seemingly that different, rather how each goes about accomplishing them. Demons are born of chaos; they act randomly and seemingly without thought. Devils, while indisputable evil, have order. They act in concert with each other and have a definite plan and goal. However, these Abishai are among the least powerful of devils. More likely they are more along the lines of guards then carrying out plans of their own.”

As the group enters the basement area of the mansion, Cereld’s Axe begins to glow once more, alerting you to the presence of evil creatures nearby! Sir Acerion will sense great evil as well.
“Evil is close by!” Cereld will call out as his axe begins to glow. “Prepare yourselves!”
Looking around, you realize that this hidden chamber is a shrine of some kind. There is a golden altar that radiates evil. Standing behind the altar is a hideous golden statue. Cereld will assist in the destruction of the shrine. While Mammon is not well known to him, he has heard the name before. Greed and Avarice are very much opposed to the teachings of Heironeous.

Later, Cereld attends the planning session held by Sir Corley and Sir Acerion. The plan seems simple enough. Given that much of what we face is unknown plans will have to be altered on the fly.

“The Seekers will be ready to assist you, Sir Corley. Just give the word.”

Turning to Regnak and Lyonessa, Serena will say, “Come, I will show you to the temple proper. You’ll note that the guards are all dwarves. They were chosen for this task since they are more resistant to magic than most other races.”
“I’m surprised it would be so.” He says back, “but, then it does makes sense.”

Watching Serena manipulate the light within her hand Rek watches with astonishment,
To Regnak she’ll add, “I am sure that this is new to you, Brother Regnak and what you are missing by not visiting a larger temple from time to time. Please look around and enjoy yourselves. I wish to take some time and pray to our Goddess.”
“Aye it is, Can All followers of Mystra do such things or is something that is taught over time?” he asks curiously s he continues to admire the statue as well as the temple.

Moving about the temple Rek, finds a quiet spot and prays to Mystra.

Unsure of what is about to transpire Rek will do his best to prepare himself for the coming day.

“Glad to know that I’m more appealing that critters from the lower planes!” Argent will tease.
Lyonessa wrote:"Sure, I'll go," Lyonessa says. "I haven't been of much use against things from other planes anyway."
“I know what you mean,” Argent agrees. “They are immune to many of my favorite spells and others are only partially effective. A case where someone with a magical weapon is the best offense.”
Chareos wrote:Chareos raises a curious eyebrow as he listens to this mere fact. There is something she is keeping to herself, so be it.
Argent notes the look from Chareos, but doesn’t bring the subject up while in the receptionist area. Later in the Wizard’s Familiar, she’ll reveal her thoughts in a hushed voice.

“The only reason I can think of on how I can already be a member is if the other ‘me’ joined the guild. I guess that means she’s been in the Elcadan area while I’ve been with the Guardians. Be warned that we might run into her at some point. Although, I do wonder what ever possessed her to go on an adventure into the swamp?”
Chareos wrote:“There is no harm in looking.” He says in return.
“No, I suppose not,” Argent states. “But it is my understanding that you don’t get to look around and browse. You ask if they have a particular item and they let you know if it is there or not. Probably for security reasons, I would imagine.”
wrote:After seeing the guild Chareos will go to the receptionist and ask for membership. He is curious to see how the testing will go as well as just who will be testing him.
Argent can provide Chareos with some pointers on the process of becoming a member. “Jallarzi sits on the Guild Board and she explained the process to me. There are three people who handle the auditions. Magical topics are discussed to see if the applicant has the necessary knowledge. The last step is to cast a spell without any magic items on you.”
Chareos wrote:“Improved invisibility may be of use as well, or perhaps darkness might be of help. Are there any mages held within those walls he asks curiously.”
“The duration of Improved Invisibility is too short to be useful unless right before a battle,” Argent will disagree. “And while darkness will blind the enemy, it also blinds you as well. So not very helpful in my opinion.”
Sir Corley wrote:“Given our mode of travel, we have multiple entrances to launch our attack,” Sir Corley states as he points to the castle map. “Lady Argent, and those who will be using flying magic, your task will be to clear the tall tower. There’s probably at least one guard on duty there.”
“Sounds simple enough, Sir Corley. We’ll find out how many guards are there soon enough.”

“That sounds fine to me. It’ll be tricky at night, but I should manage all right. My only concern is if the guards try to rush the Blackhawk after it’s down.”

“There is an alternative,” Serena will continue. “I can leave it hovering in the sky, perhaps even where you disembark. That might be a better idea.”
Lyonessa wrote:"That makes a lot of sense," Lyonessa says as she looks around, marvelling at what she sees.
Rek wrote:“I’m surprised it would be so.” He says back, “but then it does makes sense.”
“Such a thing is not common in Alphatia,” Serena states matter-of-factually. “There are other orders of Mystra devoted to protecting her temples. But Cynalon is smaller with fewer resources. As I understand it’s a tradition that dates back to the building of the tower.”
Rek wrote:“Aye it is, Can All followers of Mystra do such things or is something that is taught over time?” he asks curiously s he continues to admire the statue as well as the temple.
“Any priest of Mystra can invoke the Mageglow,” Serena answers. “It’s just a matter of learning how. I can help show you.”
Sir Corley wrote:“Lady Serena, I think we are ready to depart.”
“No time like the present,” Serena answers. “May the Lady of Mysteries smile upon our endeavor.”

Mage Guild/Temple:

Lyonessa wrote:"It looks like I'll be going to the guild and the temple," Lyonessa tells her new guardian angel. "You don't have to go if you're needed elsewhere, but it's sweet of you to be so concerned." Moonshadow does go with them, even though he can't get too far into the guild.
“Very good then milady,” Squire Moonshadow answers. “I have no other duties at the present time, and this is a dangerous city. I would be negligent in my duties to allow any harm to come to you. And, admittedly, such a duty is a pleasure, milady.”
Lyonessa wrote:Once in the tower, Squire Moonshadow and Phelan will not be allowed to follow the mages and priests further into the tower.

"It'll be okay," Lyonessa reassures Moonshadow. "Nothing will happen to me here."
“I understand,” Moonshadow replies. “I will await for your return.”

Myveria will say her goodbyes to Phelan and then follow Lyonessa into the tower.

“If you ask me,” Myveria says mischievously to Lyonessa, “I’d say that he’s a keeper! So well mannered and proper. And handsome!”

The mages and priests travel about the tower. Argent and Chareos end up in the Wizard’s Familiar, while the priests and Myveria see the Temple of Mystra. Myveria stays close to Lyonessa and will also pay her respects to Mystra.

After a time, Galfrey Kaarne enters the temple. As most know, he is the High Priest of Mystra in Elcadan. He’ll greet each of the guests in turn. “Welcome to our temple fellow followers of Mystra. These are exciting times that we live in. Not only is Elcadan undergoing a much-needed rebirth, but also the Tower of Magic itself is said to soon be within our lands. Mystra does smile upon us these days.”
Lyonessa wrote:Eventually she will return to Moonshadow to be escorted back. "Sorry for being away for so long, but the temple was wondrous and I am so glad to have gone," Lyonessa says.
“Do not concern yourself, milady,” Moonshadow states. “If guard duty does one thing, it teaches you patience. I am glad that you enjoyed yourself. Darkness is beginning to fall. I am sure that Sir Corley will require our presence at the Sallavarian Estate soon. Are you ready to depart?”

Temple of Heironeous:

Elsewhere in town, the group who explored Pander’s home stops at the Temple of Heironeous. Warton provides maps the order had for the Duke’s castle.

The first floor of the castle mainly holds areas for guests and mingling. There is a dinning hall, a huge ballroom, and a large audience chamber along with smaller chambers for recreation.

The second floor is primarily holds the personal chambers of the Duke and his family, along with a few guest rooms.

The third floor holds the Duke’s private office and a few more guest chambers.

The fourth floor does not cover the entire castle; rather it’s composed of towers rising up from the lower levels. One portion rises up on the west side of the castle and this tops out at five stories. The other is on the east side and rises up six stories. The fourth through six floors are primarily guard posts, defensive positions, and observation areas.

The basement underneath the castle goes down at least two levels. The first level holds the castle kitchen, storage, and staff quarters. The office of the Captain of the Duke’s Guards, his quarters and an armory are there as well.

The second level down is primarily used as holding cells, and the family crypt.

Sir Corley wrote:“Thank you, Warton. That will make the task to come easier. Perhaps you and your allies could be on hand this evening as well. If the guards attention is focused on the main entryways, then it’ll make your task of coming in from the flank even easier.”
“We wouldn’t miss it for anything,” Warton states. “The forces of Heironeous and Helm will be ready to do their part.”
“Sound suggestion, Sir Corley,” Warton will say. “I’ll have my best men assigned to the task. You can assure the Duke that nothing will get past us.”

Back at the Sallavarian Estate, Sir Corley reports to the Duke and his court.
Sir Corley wrote:“Your Grace, it seems that Mortimer was murdered by the alliance of the other four councilmen as he learned that they were all followers of the God of Greed and Avarice. Mortimer’s spirit named Furnow’s sister Ulana as his killer via poison. We’ve found lesser devils in two of the councilman’s homes and a shrine to this foul god concealed in Pander’s Basement.”
“This is most troubling news,” the Duke notes. “It also serves to explain the rules and regulations the guilds in Elcadan had to work out. Those at the top of the guilds were making a fortune while those beneath lived in poverty. Greed and avarice is the only thing you can call it. All their unfair laws and taxes will be removed. These men must be found and captured, as well as the Ulana woman. There is much that they have to answer for.”
Sir Corley wrote:“This evening we will retake the Duke’s Castle from the misguided city guard.
“Very good,” the Duke states. “I eagerly await your report.”

Not long after that, the Guardians and the New Seekers board the Blackhawk. Under Sherra’s direction, the ship is made ready to take flight. Once that is done, Serena takes control of the Spell Engine and causes the Blackhawk to rise up into the night sky.

The trip from the Sallavarian dock to the main city is a short one. The light from the top of the Mage Tower cannot be missed. The castle itself soon comes into sight. The Blackhawk slows down and begins to move closer. Those looking can see something happening at the entry to the castle, where a group of men are approaching. These are the forces of Helm and Heironeous doing their part.

The high tower is spotted and Serena moves the Blackhawk in that direction. Preparatory spells are just starting to be cast.

Lyonessa has Dusk flying ahead to scout out the situation. Movement is spotted in the high tower, guards on watch no doubt. There appears to be two of them on duty. However, as Dusk flies closer Lyonessa gasps upon seeing that these guards are not men, nor are they human. They are drow!

“There is an alternative,” Serena will continue. “I can leave it hovering in the sky, perhaps even where you disembark. That might be a better idea.”
Sir Corley considers for a few seconds. “You have a fair point, Lady Serena. No, I do not wish for the Blackhawk to fall back into enemy hands. Your suggestion of leaving it up in the air is a sound one. As long as we can return to it easily enough.”

That evening the group begins their assault on the Duke’s Castle. The Blackhawk flies overhead and begins to move into position. Lady Lyonessa has Dusk flying ahead as a scout. Guards are spotted, which is no surprise, but what is a surprise is that they are drow!

“This changes things,” Sir Corley announces. “We do not have to be gentle with these foes! Lady Argent, Lord Chareos, remove those guards! We’ll then dock and begin our assault. The time for battle is at hand!”

Argent:

As the Blackhawk gets closer to the castle, Argent casts her preparatory spells. Fly is cast first and then Halo of Eyes. The castle gets closer and Lyonessa says that the guards are not human, but drow!

“With pleasure,” Argent purrs.

The Invoker takes flight, moving closer until she’s in visual range of her target. Then she’ll cast Magic Missile at one of the drow.

Chareos

Chareos kicks himself for not having a fly spell within his memory though least he does have his offensive spells. As the Ships draw closer he will cast a Magic Missile spell at the other guard that Argent did not target.

Regnak

“Drow?” he looks around to the others feeling strangely unequipped in the knowledge of what he has gotten into, but then the day is young. Regnak will be ready to follow the others into action.

Ivy:

Ivy remains quiet and near Sir Acerion as the ship moves towards the castle. She will not be among the first to enter, rather she’ll bring up the rear as her faith prevents her from harming these foes. She’ll save her Hold spells for larger groups and Silence for any enemy spellcasters. Otherwise, she’ll be in support mode.

However, things change as we near the castle. Lyonessa’s familiar, Dusk, reveals that the guards are actually drow!
Sir Corley wrote:“This changes things,” Sir Corley announces. “We do not have to be gentle with these foes! Lady Argent, Lord Chareos, remove those guards! We’ll then dock and begin our assault. The time for battle is at hand!”
“This doesn’t change anything for me,” Ivy notes. “I still cannot kill them, even if they are drow. I will follow offering my healing and spells for support.”

Crysania

Crysania:

Crysania eyes the map the Duke’s castle and listens to the plan of attack offered. It’s simple, but given what we are expecting to face, need not be complex. Crysania boards the Blackhawk and prepares for what is to come.

Scouts report that the guards manning the high tower of the castle are drow and not human!
Sir Corley wrote:“This changes things,” Sir Corley announces. “We do not have to be gentle with these foes! Lady Argent, Lord Chareos, remove those guards! We’ll then dock and begin our assault. The time for battle is at hand!”
“Yes, it does,” Crysania agrees. “But perhaps we should have expected as much. Everywhere we’ve been where the sisters have let their evil fester has had drow present as well. At Corunglain and then again at Wrasseldown. The only place there wasn’t drow was Ansimont and they had a different Underdark problem. We must be prepared for anything.”

Once we disembark the ship, Crysania will use her battleaxe to its full affect. Her spells will be saved for now.

“I’ll save a Fly spell just for that very purpose,” Serena answers.
“Good to see you again, Brother Kaarne”, Serena easily says in greeting. It’s so refreshing to be among the faithful here in Cynalon. Far to many in her home country of Alphatia have put their own selfish wants and desires ahead of the goddess’. But not here.

“The Lady of Mysteries does seem to favor this land. The presence of the Tower will stabilize this region and force Alphatia to acknowledge Cynalon’s presence. A great deal of good will come from this, provided we can remove the current dangers that threaten this nation.”

That evening, Serena takes control of the Blackhawk and with assistance of Sherra pilots it towards the Duke’s Castle. The guards are revealed to be drow, the dark elves that dwell in the Underdark. But this revelation doesn’t really change things. Serena will remain on the Blackhawk until everyone is away. Once she steps onto the castle’s battlements, she’ll command the Blackhawk to rise up about fifty more feet and stop. Once that is accomplished, Serena will then follow the others into the castle.

Cereld of Heironeous grips his battleaxe tightly as the presence of drow is revealed.

“This is my first time engaging these foes,” Cereld notes. “Regardless, I and the Seekers are ready!”

Should the need to split up our forces once in the castle be required, Cereld will suggest that the Seekers go off on their own.
