New Frontier - Spell Lists Thread

Post by fanchergw »

These are the spells currently memorized:

Kylie
First Level: Friends, Shield, Sleep, Spider Climb
Second Level: Blur, Knock, Web

Grondar
First Level: Bless, Cure Light Wounds, Detect Magic, Protection from Evil
Second Level: Augury, Hold Person, Speak with Animals, Wyvern Watch
Third Level: Cure Disease, Dispel Magic

You'll note that for Grondar I only selected spells that are in the Player's Handbook. I noticed that there were a bunch of spells on his sheet that weren't in the PH, but somewhere on this site I seem to recall reading that all initial spells are from the PH. Thus, I assumed that he didn't have those others. If those others are indeed available to him, could you tell me where they come from?

Thanks,

Gordon

The selecting spells only from the PHB only applied to mages when selecting their starting spellbooks. Other priest spells on Grondar's list would have come from other books such as the Tome of Magic & Player's Option: Spells & Magic. I believe you told me earlier that you had a copy of the later book. In the back is a break down of Priest spheres for all three books, including where the spells came from.

So Priests have those 3 tomes to draw spells from. Check with me first if you want to use a spell from some other source. Those type of spells I will deal with on a case by case basis. The primary requirement is that I have a copy of the spell myself. Then we'll go from there.

Memorized Spells

Post by fanchergw »

Didn't realize the limitation only applied to Wizards. It seems I also have a an RTF copy of Tome of Magic, so I guess I'm good to go. It's nice to know that I only have to worry about those three sources.

I printed out and read through the appropriate spells from ToM and PO:S&M (gotta love that abbreviation  ). Let's make the following changes to Grondar's list:

1st Level: replace Detect Magic with Orison.
2nd Level: replace Hold Person and Speak With Animals with Cure Moderate Wounds and Restore Strength
3rd Level: replace Dispel Magic with Repair Injury.

When not anticipating combat, Grondar focusses heavily on healing. It's amazing how often farmers gash themselves and townsfolk fall off ladders...

I would say something like 99% of all priest spells in the game would come from those sources. There are a few others out there, including a few deity specific spells. (While I DO have the 4 volume wizard spell compendium, I do NOT have the priest books.)

Also an Mage who buys access to a Priest Sphere or any Priest who buys a mage school would be limited to just those spells in the PHB. Otherwise those things can get really out of hand.

There's another rule reguarding clerics that you need to consider. All Prietss can burn an existing spell prayed for and convert it into a Cure Spell of equal or lesser levels. (That would cover the Cure Light Wounds, Cure Moderate Wounds, Cure Serious Wounds, and Cure Critical Wounds spells.) So memorizing those particular spells are not necessary.

While clerics lost some of the bonus spells they used to get under the old system, this ability more than makes up for it.

Evil priests can do the same, but gain Cause Wounds spells. Neutral priest can do both.

Ah, yet another twist in this fine tapestry...

Okay, round three!
1st Level: Bless, Orison, Protection from Evil, Sanctuary
2nd Level: Aid, Hold Person, Restore Strength, Wyvern Watch
3rd Level: Cure Disease, Repair Injury

Whew! Hope the third time's the charm...

PS Glad you like the idea of splitting this stuff out from the In-Character thread, Musky!

Also Could you explain to me how the Ioun stone I have works. Im not totally sure how it stores the spells and if I can double spells up with in it. I looked in the DM book for it and somewhat didnt understand it how it was worded. cause it says you can store spells in it but not which ones or doubles or anything among those lines.

So Kylie can choose up to 4 1st level spells and 2 2nd from Lilia's spell book.
Can I get an explanation of how this works? Does the 4 & 2 apply to both Lilia's and Chareos' spellbooks together, or can she select 4 & 2 from each separately, or some other number from Chareos'? Any spells not chosen now, can they be learned later? How are the numbers 4 & 2 determined?

What Lilia is proposing is an even swap of spells. She would like to learn 4 of Kylie's 1st level spells and 2 2nd level spells. In exchange, Lilia will allow Kylie to take 4 1st level spells & 2 2nd level spells from her spell books.

Kylie and Charoes can choose to do the same between themselves or opt for some other way of exchanging spells. For instance, Chareos posted that he wished to learn 2 1st level spells form Kylie and 2 2nd level spells. Under the proposed format, Kylie could then take 2 1st & 2 2nd level spells from Chareos book. (So Kylie could potentially gain 6 1st and 4 2nd level spells.)

Does that explain things better?

Some parties, such as the Seekers and the Company of the Sword, have an open spell book policy meaning the mages freely exchanged spells. Since this group is very new, a more limited policy seemed better at the outset. Perhaps down the road they may switch to a more open policy. Just have to see what happens.

Yup, that helps a lot. It just wasn't clear to me that that was what was being proposed. I assumed the spell limits came from the rules somewhere. Sorry for being a bit slow.

From Lilia's book, Kylie would like to learn: Affect Normal Fires, Change Self, Comprehend Languages, Magic Missile, Alter Self and Pyrotechnics.

From Chareos' book, she will attempt to master: Charm Person, Light, Mirror Image and Scare.

Spell Swap

Post by GM Mad »

Here are the results of the great spell swap:

Chareos:

1st Level: Adds Armor, Change Self, Comprehend Languages, Mount, Feather Fall, and Spider Climb

2nd Level: Adds Blur, Deeppockets Alter Self, Continual Light, & Pyrotechnics.

(Chareos got all the spells he requested.)

Kylie:

1st Level: Adds Affect Normal Fires, Comprehend Languages, Magic Missile, Charm Person, & Light

2nd Level: Adds Pyrotechnics, Mirror Image

Kylie blew her rolls for Alter Self, Change Self, and Scare. What this means is that these particular versions of those spells are uncomprehendable to Kylie. She may still try to learn other versions of these spells in other spell books.

(How many pages in a spell book a spell takes up is variable, suggesting that there are different variations of the same spell. Just because you can't learn one version of the spell doesn't mean you can't understand every version of the spell. A version that covers more pages may be clearer then one with fewer pages. Just try again when you come across another version in a different spell book.)

Lilia:

1st Level: Adds Charm Person, Color Spray, Light, Read Magic, Feather Fall, Friends, Identify, & Spider Climb

2nd Level: Adds Flaming Sphere, Melf's Acid Arrow, Scare, Blur, & Deeppockets.

Lilia blew her roll for Strength.

Updated character sheet including the new spells are being mailed.

Could Kylie then attempt to comprehend Continual Light from Lilia's book and Strength from Chareos'? Or does the "swap" only apply to attempts to learn spells? If she can make the further attempts and fails at Strength, then she would try Flaming Sphere.

Seems only fair that she should be able to try to learn other spells to make up for the ones she missed. I'll run those through the program and see what the results are. :D

Now that Kylie has all these new spells to choose from, in the morning she'll replace the Web she used with a Pyrotechnics. She'll also swap out her Spider Climb for a Charm Person. This should leave her with the following spells in memory:

First Level: Burning Hands, Charm Person, Shield, Sleep
Second Level: Blur, Pyrotechnics, Web

Grondar's spell list will not change.

A Question about Spells

Post by fanchergw »

Mad,

Admittedly, I'm not very familiar with the rules, but I'm confused about the noise associated with spellcasting. The sound made by Kylie casting Burning Hands on the boat was compared with that made by crushing the boat's timbers with a boulder. However, we've been assured that the casting of Ivy's Wyvern Watch spell would not alert anyone nearby.

How does one go about estimating how noisy a particular spell is going to be? This is particularly important for Kylie as stealth is one of her main abilities, and she should be aware of what spells will void that.

Grondar's Spells

Post by fanchergw »

For the assault in Twin Forks, Grondar will make a couple of changes to his spell list. The will replace Slow Poison with a second Hold Person. He will also swap in Dictate in place of Efficacious Monster Ward.

Also, Kylie will drop Burning Hands and add a second Charm Person.

BTW, thanks for the noise explanation!

I think the comparison to the boulder was to not waste a spell, not to the sound. Although, Burning Hands creates fire which has noise associated with it. While the Wyvern Watch is silent in effect. The casting may be quieter on a non-invocation spell too, but that is just speculation.

Okay, here goes...

All spells have as many as three components to them: Vocal, Somantic (Gestures), and Material. Many times a spellcaster doesn't bother to attempt to conceal his action so it's not an issue. As Ivy noted in her post, just because a spell as a vocal component doesn't mean that one has to shout to cast the spell. The only requirement I have is that the words have to be loud enough to be heard with in five feet of the caster and that they speak clearly. (So, don't try to cast spells with food in your mouth!)

Player's Option: Spells & Magic intruduces a Subtlety system to determine how obvious a spell is. It takes into account how long it takes to cast the spell, what type of components are involved and situation particulars.

Here's how subtle Burning Hands would be. Base Subtlety is 0. It has a casting time of 1 which doesn't increase the subtlety of the spell. (Starting with casting times of 4 and greater, the number goes up.)

It has V & S components which each add 1 to the Subtlety, so we're at a rating of 2. The spell does not call for any dramatic or blatantly obvious actions, so no penalties there.

The situational factors are as follows. The lighting is poor, so we gain a bonus of -2 to Subtlety, and that takes us back to 0. No other factors apply, so the base Subtlety for Burning Hands cast at night is 0. Anyone in the immediate area has to make an INT check, modified by the Subtletly to notice the spellcasting.

Conversely, Wyvern Watch is not quite as subtle. It has a longer casting time and a M component. Under the same circumstances as above, it would have a Subtlety of 1, meaning anyone who can see the priest would notice the spell being cast with a INT check at +1.

Bottom Line: How subtle a spell is depends on it's Casting Time, the shorter the better, how many components are involved and if any dramatic actions are required. This is offset by how bright and noisy the area the spell is cast in.

Does that help?

I should also note that the above only covers the casting of a spell. How noticable a spell is once cast depends on the spell. Some are blatantly obvious, others are not. Burning Hands would be extremly noticable for instance.

Spell Books

Post by fanchergw »

After perusing Arkane's first and second level spell books, here are the spells Kylie will definitely attempt to learn from them. (I realize this may take some time. Feel free to let me know when they are actually available to her.)

1st: Alarm, Audible Glamor, Cantrip, Color Spray, Detect Magic, Detect Phase, Detect Secret Doors & Portals, Fist of Stone, Gaze Reflection, Hold Portal, Jump, Lasting Breath, Mending, Phantasmal Force, Read Magic, Shocking Grasp

2nd: Alter Self, Cat's Grace Continual Light, Darkness 15' Radius, Detect Invisibility, Fool's Gold, Invisibility, Misdirection, Rope Trick, Stinking Cloud

After searching my PHB, the Tome of Magic and Spell & Magic, I can't find the following spells. Thus, I have no way of know if they are of a type that Kylie can learn. If they are, then she would attempt to learn them as well.

Chromatic Orb, Copy, Larloch's Minor Drain
Agannazar's Scorcher, Silence 15' Radius (as a Wizard Spell), Vocalize

Also, you show Wizard Lock in the 1st level list. According to my PHB, Wizard Lock is a 2nd level spell. However, there is a 1st level spell called Wizard Mark. I'm unsure which one you really mean. Either way, Kylie would attempt to learn it.

Wizard Mark is correct. Wizard Lock was a typo. Also I discovered that the wizard version of Silence 15' Radius was a Bard's only spell, so I replaced it with Shatter.

Instead of listing which spells Lilia and Kylie learned, here is the much shorter list of which ones they DID NOT Learn. Once I have all their updated character info, I will mail then an updated sheet with all the new spell additions on it.

Lilia's blown 3rd level spells: Tongues

Kylie's blown 1st level spells: Copy, Detect Phase, Detect Secret Doors and Portals.

Kylei's blown 2nd level spells: Invisibility, Misdirection, Rope Trick.

BTW: Kylie already knew Continual Light and Larloch's Minor Drain was in a barred school.

New Spells

Post by fanchergw »

Sounds good. Oops, you're right about Continual Light. I apparently overlooked it when I was doing this last night. It was late and I was very tired.

Where do I go to look up Chromatic Orb, Agannazar's Scorcher and Vocalize? Could you perhaps send me copy of these if I can't locate them in my files?

BTW, can Kylie attempt to learn the spells she blew at a later date?

The program yelled at me when I tried to have her learn Continual Light once more. That's how I found out about it!

I emailed you a file with those spell descriptions in it. Let me know if it doesn't turn up.

Yes, Kylie can attempt to learn other versions of spells she failed to learn. For instance, Kylie blew her Alter Self roll when she tried to learn it from Lilia's spellbook, but understood Arkane's version.

Sherwood's Spells

Post by GM Mad »

The following are the spells provided by Sherwood in the small book. All of these spells were created in this world, so you won't find them in any published books. Here they are along with a quick explanation of what they do.

1st level:

Picture - A piece of parchment and a pencil are the material components of this spell. When cast, the pencil becomes animated and begins to draw what the caster was concentrating upon. The picture takes five minutes to complete and does not make adjustments for movement within the picture. Mages typically make use of this spell to secure arrival points for Teleportation Spells. Using a Picture along with Teleport gives the caster a "Studied Carefully" rating for the spell. (Sherwood did this when he teleported back to Castle Pyris with Validar.)

Wizard Sympathy - This is one of the Signature spells created by Renee Sculley. By casting this spell, the Wizard places his personal spell signature on an object, typically a ring. The bearer of the ring will be considered to be the same as the spell caster should he come in contact with a spell the caster cast. For instance, a mage casts Wizard Sympathy on a ring which he gives to his trusted companion. That companion can now pass through any Wizard Locked door in the Wizards tower as if he was that wizard. Wizard Sympathy lasts 1 day per level of the caster and can be made Permanent.

2nd Level:

Copy Signature - The material component of this spell is an object, clothing, or belonging of the mage the caster wishes to mimic. Upon casting the spell, the caster's spell signature is changed to that of the wizard the caster is trying to imitate. If successful, spells cast by the other wizard will regard the caster of the Copy Signature as one and the same. There is no visible change to the caster; IE, he does not take on the appearance of the other wizard, only mimics his spell signature.

Dancing Blade - This spell duplicates the effect of a Sword of Dancing. When cast, the caster's blade, and only the caster's blade, will move before the caster of its own accord. The sword acts independently to the caster and responds to basic commands such as guard or attack. The sword will dance for 1 round per level of caster. The sword itself does not gain any additional bonuses beyond what the blade already possesses. (So a normal sword remains a normal sword and a sword +2 is still a sword +2.) The sword attacks with the skill of the caster. The sword will fall to the ground when the spell expires. The sword will also return to the casters hand upon command, but will end the spell. Touching the sword while dancing will end the spell as well.

Detect Signature - This spell is used to identify and analyze the spell signature of other mages. The spell only reveals the unique signature of another mage but does not provide any information as to who that mage is.

3rd Level:

Iron Spikes - This spell is a variant of Magic Missile and functions as per that spell with the exception of casting time which is 3 segments. (The spell creates 1 missile at 1st level, 2 at 3rd level, and so on up until 5 missiles at 9th level.) The primary difference between Iron Spikes and Magic Missile is that instead of creating bolts of magical energy, bolts of iron are created and then accelerated towards their intended target. (The magic if the spell is in the creation and acceleration of the Iron Spikes, not the Spikes themselves. Thus magic resistance is not a factor against Iron Spikes.)

Improved Picture - This is the same as the first level Picture spell with the exception that the picture is instantaneously created, much like a camera taking a photograph.

That is all.
