New Frontiers #1 - Validar
The magic of Padraig's spell releases Validar. A moment ago he was inside the mansion of the Seekers in the eastern City of Gateway. Now he finds himself standing in the courtyard of his father's castle in the foothills to the south of the main City of Pyris. Validar has returned home.
Close by is the statue of his namesake great-grandfather Validar and his brother Valerian. The pair were mighty warriors in their day and the founders of the Barony of Pyris. It is early evening here in Pyris and there is a slight chill in the air. Validar says his goodbyes to the boy mage and Padraig teleports away once more.
Earlier this day, Validar had received a message bearing the seal of Pyris. The contents of that message were brief. It was a letter signed by Validar's mother, Lysandra. She urged her son to return home as soon as possible, but didn't give any reason as to why. Knowing that his mother would not write such a note if it were not a genuine emergency, Validar immediately announced to the Seekers that he was departing on personal business. The trip was made much easier when the mage Padraig offered to teleport Validar back home. The mage used the description of the courtyard statue to scry in on; allowing him to safely cast his spell.
The sudden appearance of the two does not go unnoticed by the castle guards. Men quickly come running with weapons drawn. However upon seeing Validar and his shield bearing the coat of arms of Pyris they slow their advance.
One of the officers comes closer, a man Validar recognizes as Kerwin comes closer.
"Is that you, milord?", he wonders aloud. "Have you returned home?"

Not much, but enough to get the ball rolling. This post is specifically for Validar and his return home. I'll be opening up a new thread later on for all the new characters and players to post in so don't panic.
Other wise, its all Validar’s!

VALIDAR -
Validar looks around and sees the familiar statues that stand in the courtyard of his father's castle. He knows that he has returned home, as his gaze travels up and over toward the main structure. It is with very mixed feelings that he has left command of the Seekers and returned home, but the calling was unavoidable.
Validar is pleased to see the guards are not shirking their duty and quickly begin to assemble at their apparent intrusion. Validar holds up his hand to signal the guards and then raises the visor on his helm.
One of the officers steps forward as the guards slow their advance, but continue to form ranks. "Is that you, milord?," the officer asks. "Have you returned home?"
"Kerwin! Indeed it is I." Validar steps forward as the man relaxes the grip on his halberd and salutes, crossing his right fist over his chest. "At ease, my friend," Validar states as he lightly taps his fist on the man's shoulder armor. "Earlier this morning, I received summons from my mother. Ah, but forgive me. My companion is a member of the adventurers I have been leading into New Keln." Validar will indicate his teammate with a quick gesture.
"Of course, milord. We will have quarters prepared for our guest." The guards look quizzically at the young lad and wonder what someone of his age is doing adventuring with the Baron's son. Meanwhile two of the men take the reins of Validar's warhorse, Havok.
"That will not be necessary," Padraig states. "Thank you for your hospitality, but I have my own accommodations." Padraig nods toward Validar.
"Thank you for the rapid transportation, mage. You have saved me a number of days in travel. Perhaps when this matter is completed we shall meet again," Validar states.
"Who knows where our paths will take us. Fare well." With that, the boy mage casts a spell and simply vanishes.
With scarcely an afterthought to the mage's departure, Validar turns back to the sergeant. "And speaking of this matter which brought me so far a distance: Kerwin, what do you know of the summons my mother sent? What matter is so important and so secretive that it not even be mentioned in writing?"

Backtracking:
Before departing the Seekers Mansion, Padraig cast a Shrink spell on Havoc, Validar's mount. The mighty warhorse is shrunk down to the size a small dog and is easily carried in Validar's arms. That task complete, the teleportation spell is cast as before.
(Pad can either Dispel the effect or let it wear off naturally which would take about an hour.)

After the mage departs, Validar turns his attention back to Officer Kerwin. "And speaking of this matter which brought me so far a distance: Kerwin, what do you know of the summons my mother sent? What matter is so important and so secretive that it not even be mentioned in writing?"
Confusion shows in Kerwin's face. "I know nothing of this, milord," Kerwin stammers out. "We were unaware of your impending return. I am as much in the dark about this as you are."
"However, perhaps it does explain things, "Kerwin will whisper almost to himself. Validar will be able to hear part of Kerwin's mumblings.
"At any rate, welcome home, milord. Your father is currently holding court. I shall have you announced immediately."
At Officer Kerwin's direction, the guards are ordered back to their posts with a runner sent to the main castle alerting them of Validar's impending arrival.

VALIDAR -
Confusion shows in Kerwin's face. "I know nothing of this, milord," Kerwin stammers out. "We were unaware of your impending return. I am as much in the dark about this as you are."
"Interesting," Validar states. "I would have thought that my arrival would meet with a semblence of preparation." Validar catches part of Kerwin speaking to himself.

"Is there something I should be aware of, friend Kerwin?", Validar asks, leaning in closer.
Kerwin is silent for a moment. "Lord Validar, I am but the Sergeant of the Guards. I am not priviledged with 'special information'."
"That may well be, Officer Kerwin," Validar says as he hands his shield to one of the remaining guards and unfastens his helm. "Still, in the future, I would do well to learn things from every avenue available. Court intrigue can be so insidious."
"I understand, milord." Stable handlers come to escort Validar's 'once again' full-size warhorse to the stables. Turning to the two remaining guards, Kerwin orders, " Escort Lord Validar to the Baron's courtroom."
"At once," the guards snap back in unison, while saluting.
Validar tucks his helm under his arm and strides purposefully toward the castle entrance. As he approaches the main building, he turns back to a watching Kerwin. "We must catch up on old times, my friend." Kerwin waves as he watches Validar and his escorts enter the main bailey.
Turning to the guard who bears his shield, Validar asks, "What is your name, soldier?"
"I am known as Dellant, Sir," the soldier answers.
"I am not a knight, Dellant. Perhaps one day."
"Forgive my error, Lord Validar. My understanding of heraldry is still a bit weak."
"You are studying heraldry?", Validar asks.
"Yes, I am the youngest son of Sir Corwin, a knight in the service of the Baron of Dmitrov."
Validar regards the young soldier. "You are a long way from home, Dellant." Both of the men understand that Validar's comment does not refer to distance but the fact that the young man has been sent by his father to train in an outland Barony. For the status seeking nobles of the inner lands of the Kingdom, this would amount to something of a penance for the lad. "However, I am sure if you continue your studies, you will continue to improve. When I am a knight, I will have need of a herald, Dellant."
"Yes, milord." Dellant readjusts Validar's shield in his hands and carries it a bit higher.
The trio proceed past more guards who salute as they pass down the main hall. Towards the end there are large double doors and more guards stationed nearby. As Validar approaches, the guards salute. Validar waits for a moment and grips the pommel of his sword with his off hand, his helm nestled under his right arm.
The doors are opened and Validar hears his name announced to the assembled group. Confidently, Validar strides forward into the courtroom.

Kerwin:
"Is there something I should be aware of, friend Kerwin?", Validar asks, leaning in closer.
Kerwin is silent for a moment. "Lord Validar, I am but the Sergeant of the Guards. I am not privileged with 'special information'."
"That may well be, Officer Kerwin," Validar says as he hands his shield to one of the remaining guards and unfastens his helm. "Still, in the future, I would do well to learn things from every avenue available. Court intrigue can be so insidious."
"I understand, milord," Kerwin will state. In a much lower voice he will add, "I have no proof of anything, Lord Validar, but I do have the nagging feeling that something is wrong. Nothing I can put into words, and please forgive my insolence, but the Baron has not been himself the last few days. Some of the other men can sense something amiss as well, but what we do not know."
The Courtroom:
The Baron's courtroom is much as Validar remembers it. The Baron and Baroness sit upon a raised platform at the far end of the hall. The Baroness has long dark blonde hair and a striking beauty. She wears emerald green robes, embroidered with golden designs. The Baron is dressed in standard Pyris military officer garb: a white uniform, dark blue cloak and Pyris coat of arms on his chest in place of the rank designation. The Baron has light brown hair, greying very slightly at the temples and a full beard.
Open court is one of the more tedious duties of the Baron. At this time the citizens of the Barony can come forth and have their complaints and small squabbles settled.
Half a dozen of the guards stand ready to protect the Baron. The Master of the Guard, the seasoned warrior Parnell is present and not bothering to conceal his boredom. Nearly twenty citizens of the Barony are present in the large chamber voicing their complaints.
However with the announcement of Validar's arrival, the crowd splits allowing him direct access to the Baron and Baroness. The citizens bow in respect as Validar passes.
Up on the small dais Baroness Lysandra rises to her feet. "Validar! You've returned!" Lysandra steps down to the main floor of the courtroom to greet her son. There is a very pleased look on her face, and one that at the same time seems to show some concern.
"Just look at you," Lysandra says upon reaching Validar. "Logan tells us that you've been causing all kinds of trouble for the enemies of the Crown at Gateway."
Behind the Baroness, the Baron rises to his feet. "I declare this session of the court to be closed. As a father, I would like to welcome my son's return home in private. Pleasant evening to all."
Validar can't help but understand what Kerwin was speaking of. The Baron does sound like and look like Validar's father, but there is something wrong. The mannerisms are a bit off as is the pattern of speech. It is a bit jarring.
The assembled crowd bows in respect to the Baron's wishes and make their way from the chamber. In a couple of minutes there are gone. At the Baron's direction all the guards return to their posts with the exception of Parnell.
"Welcome home, son," the Baron says as he approaches Validar.

"Greetings, mother," Validar states humbly, as he accepts a hug from the Baroness. "I had been leading a band of adventurers known as the Seekers."
"We've heard some of the tales coming from Gateway," Lysandra says with a smile. "I am very proud of you."

Validar remains standing near his mother, but moves to intersperse himself between her and the Baron as he regards the man warily. "Hello, father." As he watches the Baron, Validar's suspicions grow. He may have been gone for almost 9 months, but this hardly seems like the man Validar once knew. Everything about him is wrong, except for the appearance.
"It is good to be home again," the young noble states, awaiting his father's further actions. It is best not to tip his hand that he senses something amiss if the other's do not know. Validar casts a glance at Parnell and then at his mother and back to the Baron.

So, where's the Baron?
Validar is rather surprised, but manages to conceal it well, as the 'Baron' is suddenly revealed to be his cousin, the mage Jallarzi Sallivarian.
Validar looks back and forth at the other three present, wondering what has happened to his father. "Since I am sure that the three of you all bear knowledge that I am lacking, I would certainly appreciate being let in on this little 'secret'. Why was I summoned here? And what has happened to my father?"

"Since I am sure that the three of you all bear knowledge that I am lacking, I would certainly appreciate being let in on this little 'secret'. Why was I summoned here? And what has happened to my father?"
"Someone attacked your father, dear," Baroness Lysandra states, her mask of serenity coming apart. "It was touch and go for awhile, but we think he's going to pull through." The Baroness loses her composure and holds on to her son for comfort.
"The Baron is resting this way," the Master of the Guards quietly adds. "Follow me, milord."
As the group begins to step away from the courtroom and move deeper into the castle, Jallarzi does her best to explain the situation.
"Baron Relon was tricked into downing some type of magical potion that we have yet to identify," Jallarzi explains. "This potion was added to a shipment of wine that he receives every fall from Lord Cavius."
The name is familiar to Validar. Lord Cavius adventured with his father when they were much younger men. He was a Ranger, as Validar recalls. Cavius was given Rulership over the town of Rennydale further to the north and west. It lies within the Duchy of Corunglain.
After the fall of the Barony of Stone Ridge and Forts Fletcher and Lakeside, Rennydale became the next line of defense against humanoid invasions from the Broken Lands in that part of the Kingdom. These days Rennydale is not the most pleasant place to live, but they do grow excellent grapes to make very fine wines. Lord Cavius traditionally had a case delivered to his old friend every fall. The family used to look forward to the wine's arrival.
"The potion wracked your father's body and we suspect that it was trying to change him somehow. Aunt Lysandra contacted me in just time. Elspeth was able to stop the progress of the potion, but has yet to completely cure your father. He's been bedridden for the last several days now."
"We quickly realized that there were three possibilities as to who did this. Right now we really don't know why. One possibility was that Lord Cavius, or someone in his employ added the foul potion when the wine was bottled. Given how long he's been a friend of the family, that option doesn't seem likely. However, we do have someone looking into that matter."
"Another option is that the courier added the potion after the wine left Rennydale. At the moment that seems the most likely option. A man named Lothar delivered the wine to the castle. My cousin Sherwood has been looking to this Lothar and discovered that this man is not a very pleasant fellow. He's into all sort of sordid activities."
"Sherwood has put together a party of adventurers to assist you in tracking Lothar down. It seems that he holds sway over a large contingent of bandits and other foul creatures. They are gathering at the Green Forest Inn even as we speak."
"The final option was that the poison was introduced here at the castle, another unlikely scenario. Because of that I assumed the Baron's identity in the hopes that if there was a traitor in our midst that the Baron's continued presence might cause them to slip up. Only us four, Sherwood, Elspeth, your sister, and Corley are aware of what truly is going on."
Corley is yet another name familiar to Validar. The two men know each other rather well since Corley is the son of General Logan, currently commanding the Crown's forces in Gateway. The boys nearly grew up together.
Nearing the Baron's chambers, Validar can see Corley standing guard outside the master bedroom. Corley is even a little taller than the last time Validar saw him. Corley is a powerfully built man, muscular with broad shoulders. He's quite handsome too. Corley has reddish-blonde hair and green eyes. He's currently dressed in military uniform, but has a massive two-handed sword with him.
"All quiet here, milady", Corley reports to the Baroness. "You may go right in." With that, Corley opens the door and steps aside to allow passage.
He nods and says, "Validar", as the warrior steps past. "We'll speak later. See to your father."
Stepping inside the Baron's bedchamber, Validar can see his father resting in bed. The Baron, usually so full of life, is extremely pale in color. Validar's younger sister, Rachel, sits on one side of the bed holding the Baron's hand. She rushes to greet Validar upon seeing him.
"I'm so glad you're home," she says hugging her older brother.
Sitting in a chair on the other side of the bed is an attractive woman wearing the colors and holy symbol of Azrella. She has chestnut brown hair and matching eyes. She gently dabs a wet cloth on your father's forehead. This must be the Elspeth that Jallarzi mentioned earlier.
Jallarzi steps up to Elspeth and places her hand on the healer's shoulder.
"I think the worst is now over," Elspeth reports. "The Baron's condition is stable. The fever should break in a day or two. He should be out of bed by the end of the week."
Now what?
Validar looks back and forth at the other three present, wondering what has happened to his father. "Since I am sure that the three of you all bear knowledge that I am lacking, I would certainly appreciate being let in on this little 'secret'. Why was I summoned here? And what has happened to my father?"

VALIDAR -
Validar will comfort his mother and sister at the various respective times, giving them a long hug and a reassurance that not only will the Baron be well, but that Validar would ensure that the culprits would be punished.
Validar and Corley will have a chance to discuss some things soon enough.
A number of questions:
What do we know about this Lothar?
Where is he based at? How large is his contingent of his?
Could Cavius be in league with enemies of Pyris, particularly Elcadan?
Did Cavius dispatch the wine through Lothar directly or someone else?
Why did Sherwood assemble a new group, when I could contact the Seekers and have many of their number with us?
How many are being assembled here in Pyris?
How soon will this group be ready, as Validar is anxious to get started?
How long has it been since Corley and Validar have seen each other?
What does my father know about any potential court intrigues from the other Baronies?

Q’s & A’s:
What do we know about this Lothar?
Details are still sketchy at this moment. Sherwood has been out gathering information on this man. At the moment, what was mentioned above is all that Jallarzi knows.
Where is he based at? How large is his contingent of his?
That is information Jallarzi is hoping that Sherwood will be returning with.
Could Cavius be in league with enemies of Pyris, particularly Elcadan?
Always possible, but it does seem unlikely given the long friendship between Cavius and your father. Rennydale is far enough away, some 500 miles from Pyris, that Cavius trying to take over the Barony seems unlikely. But, as Jallarzi noted above, she has agents looking into that angle.
This Lothar might be in league with Elcadan, however.
Did Cavius dispatch the wine through Lothar directly or someone else?
Typically the wine is dispatched by ship to Elcadan and then by merchant caravan to Pyris. It gives the newly bottled wine time to further ferment. Exact details how Lothar got involved in all of this remain sketchy. The shipment DID pass through Elcadan along the way.
Why did Sherwood assemble a new group, when I could contact the Seekers and have many of their number with us?
When Sherwood delivered your mother's message to the Seeker's Mansion, the group was away on an adventure. The caretakers had no idea when the Seekers were going to return. So, Sherwood assembled a new group to carry out this task with the idea of him leading it. Your return was not expected, at least not this quickly. Now that you are here, they'll turn leadership of this group over to you.
Jallarzi will add that those being assembled have had past adventuring experience and are not raw recruits. Both she and Sherwood wish to take the measure of each person to see how they react in a dangerous situation and how well they take to adventuring as they may be needed again in the future.
How many are being assembled here in Pyris?
The last Jallarzi knew there were at least six members. She's honestly not sure how many Sherwood tried to recruit or if they all were available.
How soon will this group be ready, as Validar is anxious to get started?
The original plan was to start out as soon as Sherwood had located Lothar. Jallarzi expects him back at any time.
How long has it been since Corley and Validar have seen each other?
Probably a few years at least. Corley is three years younger than Validar, but was always tall for his age. He's grown up into quite the handsome young man.
What does my father know about any potential court intrigues from the other Baronies?
It's not a big secret that the Duchy of Elcadan has always wanted to include Pyris among their holdings. The Merchant Guild of Elcadan has especially wanted this to happen. Back in Elcadan they hold a virtual stranglehold over all trade. Acquiring Pyris would just further strengthen their hold.
Having failed in their attempts thus far, the Guilds have attempted to build up the Town of Wrassledown that lies about halfway in between Elcadan and Pyris. So far it's been a miserable failure. The solid reputation Pyris has among the merchant caravans has prevented Wrassledown from taking much away from Pyris.
The only other territory that really borders on Pyris is the Duchy of Graystone to the east. It holds the cities of Crossroads and Gateway among its domain. Relations with Graystone have always been good since they dislike the Rulership of Elcadan so much too. The Baron feels that Graystone would back him up should Elcadan try something.
Pyris has been good for Crossroads' business and the Duke of Graystone sees no reason to change this arrangement. With the expansion in the old Keln Lands underway, the Duchy is rapidly expanding as it is. So their attention is elsewhere.
The only other domain that borders on Pyris is one that is separated by the impenetrable mountains to the south, making them an unlikely culprit.

VALIDAR -
Not having much more that he can do until they receive word back from Sherwood and their agents, Validar will spend time catching up with family and friends. He will be sure to spend time catching up with his mother and sister and checking on his father's condition regularly, as well as speaking to Corley and Kerwin, to a lesser extent, as well as anyone else he knows personally of the staff.
He will also review the castle, the guards and all the soldiers as well as lists of anyone who is staying here, especially other nobles. He will also be sure to engage in regular combat training if only on his own.

VALIDAR -
After visiting with his mother, sister Rachel and Corley, Validar will review the castle and guards with Kerwin, making a rounds of the entire grounds.
The Barony of Pyris is centered in the foothills and rolling fields between the Dorwyn Elfholds and the Cynalonian Mountain Range to the south. The castle proper is situated on one of the higher hills in the area, just to the south of the main city. Pyris itself is surrounded by a low wall, which extends to the main castle wall. The main wall surrounding the castle is higher than the city walls by nearly twice the height. Guard towers dot the walls surrounding the castle, more frequently than the further spaced, more open and lower towers on the city walls.
Kerwin and Validar circle the castle's outer walls on horseback as they review and pass the guardtowers and their respective weaponry and guards. Validar stops at each of the towers to meet the guards on duty as well as inspect a few of the defensive siege engines. As woodworking is one of Pyris' specialties, the defenses have a large number of siege engines for the size of the castle. Pyris creates many of the kingdom's seige weapons for the Crown as well as trading them with some neighboring nobles. A siege engine from Pyris is a work of art as well as destruction.
Validar's great-grandfather had some of the defensive siege engines installed with special pivoting mechanisms that would allow the weapons to fire outward from the castle and also inward to the inner grounds. The mechanisms were not automatic in operation and require some resetting and locking for them to fire properly and of course, special training from the weapons' crews operators. Pyris was proud of its heavy weapons crews and their officers were looked on favorably.
Validar also reviewed the standing guards to the castle and tallies indicating the number of foot soldiers, heavy weapons crew members, medium cavalry and knights.
"My lord," Kerwin offers, "we could organize a series of drill manuvers for your review, if you desire."
"That sounds splendid, Kerwin. Perhaps tomorrow morning. I am curious? How many heavy cavalry do we have in the standing army and how many nobles are amoung our ranks?"
"Are you expecting a battle, milord?" Kerwin asks, hesitantly.
"It is always good to be prepared, officer Kerwin," Validar states as he stares off into the distance... towards the west... towards Elcadan.

Post Continued:
Having time to kill, Validar makes the rounds at the castle.
The Baroness appears very tired from this whole ordeal. She does agree that your father is looking better and is confident that he will recover. She's very grateful for Jallarzi and Sherwood's help, not to mention the healer Elspeth. She hopes that you'll be able to uncover who is behind this and why. For the most part she stays with your father, except when out with the disguised Jallarzi.
Your sister Rachel is a little more upbeat. She'll pester Validar about the details of his adventures. She's also quite proud about how far along her sword fighting techniques are. She's looking forward to the day that she can go out on adventures of her own.
Corley is glad to see you, as it's been a few years. In his younger days he was a regular guest at Castle Pyris while his father was off campaigning. During the time you were apart Corley has grown considerably. He's now taller, stronger, and turned into quite the handsome young man. He has some warrior training under his belt as well.
Corley was here at the Castle when the incident with the Baron occurred. He quickly offered his services in defense of the Baron and hopes to be involved in the expedition to deal with these criminals. He will eagerly agree to weapons practice, as he wants to test himself against someone as skilled as Validar.
Not a whole lot to say about Kerwin. He's a fine officer, but not adventuring material. He was also out of the loop about the current situation with the Baron.
There is one guest of note here in the Castle. Her name is Vera and she's quite the attractive woman. She's a full figured young lady whose dress only accents her curves. She has long blonde hair and sky blue eyes. She smiles widely when she meets Validar.
"You must be the Lord Validar that I've heard so much about! It must be exciting to be a Knight of the Realm!"

Meeting Lady Vera
VALIDAR -
Validar will try to help Jallarzi's impersonation of the Baron along, by acting as if nothing is amiss. Validar will make a promise to his mother that the culprits will be found and that everyone who had anything to do with this unfortunate and base attack on the Baron will be dealt with harshly and completely.
Rachel and Validar share the next day's mid-day meal and Validar relates his tales and travels with the Seekers, including the lifting of the siege of Gateway. When Rachel tells Validar about her own sword-fighting training, Validar is interested and impressed. Seems as if there will be another adventurer and perhaps a knight in the family as well.
Validar will schedule a practice session with Corley for a time after the military drills and exercises. There should be quite a bit of interest in the sessions I would think.

When Vera is introduced, Validar will politely correct her. "Milady, I am very pleased to make your acquaintance. However, I must confess that I am not a knight."
Vera is not dissuaded in the least by this revelation. "Well, I am certain that it is merely a terrible oversight on the part of the Crown," she adds with another smile.
"I would not presume to make decisions for the King, milady. I would be honored to hold such a title to be certain, but it does not define who I am."
"Indeed it does not, Lord Validar. Your reputation preceeds you."
"You are too kind, Lady Vera. I trust you are finding your extended stay with us quite pleasant?", Validar asks.
"The Barony of Pyris has been a marvelous host. Our family has not had its own land for some time now."
"Ah yes, you are of the Ardel family of Stone Ridge." The Barony of Stone Ridge fell over 40 years ago after a major incursion of humanoids from the Broken Lands. They overwhelmed Ft. Fletcher and Ft. Runnels and the Barony soon fell as well. Now Stone Ridge was a chaotic domain. "It is unfortunate what happened to your grandfather's domain."
"You know of our family's plight?" Vera asks, as she takes Validar's arm.
"I am fairly well-versed in the Kingdom's noble families' histories", Validar responds. "I understand that the mining operations that were once so prevalent there have been a big loss to the Dukes of Corunglain over the years."
"I have never seen my family's ancestral lands unfortunately. It is far too dangerous to travel there now. I try to hear what stories I can of Ardelphia, but there is never good news and the tales just bring misery to my heart," Vera says with a look of dismay etched upon her beautiful face.
"There is reason to be hopeful, Lady Vera," Validar states. "The crown has recently recovered Restenford and even the dwarven city of Ilefarn was liberated. And that by a 'mere' adventuring band. Akorros and Stone Ridge will belong to the Crown once more I am certain."
"Alas, it may not happen in my lifetime," Vera wistfully responds. "The Kingdom has more interest in the old Keln lands. None of the inner Dukes will put much effort toward helping our family reclaim our lands and our heritage."
"Indeed, some of the older Duchies feel that the outer lands are just buffers between them and the evil that borders Cynalon," Validar says derisively. "And I am very interested in the expansion into Keln territories myself, else I had not gone there, nor would I have committed myself to the upcoming war next spring. However, the matters closer to home also have my attention and my extreme interest. I would like to see a major undertaking to reclaim our western territories again."
Vera looks up hopefully at Lord Validar as he speaks with conviction. "Is this true, milord?"
"There are enemies from within and without, Lady Vera. And we must combat them all. I am committing myself to opposing those enemies. We would be as foolish as the noble houses of Penhaligon and Rifflian if we sought to cast a blind eye at our neighbors' plights. Pyris has good relations with Lord Cavius of Rennydale and I am certain that they would be pleased to see the humanoids beaten back."
"How would you manage such a huge undertaking? Corunglain and Rennydale already have court intrigue with the Duchy of Elcadan and they are trying to keep their own borders defended from further invasions to the north. On behalf of my family, I have already gone to them repeatedly for help, to no avail."
"That is not a worry to be spoken about as yet. However, may I propose an 'arrangement' between us? I vow to look into the plans to reclaim Ardelphia. And you have something which I require."

The 'arrangement'...
VALIDAR and VERA (Continued...) -
Vera lets Validar's last statement sink in for a few moments as she considers his meaning. "I would do anything to reclaim my ancestral lands," Vera finally states, looking almost desperate. "I have been trying so long, so hard, only to have it all end in vain each time I try to even get started. Forgive my insolence, milord, but can it possibly be done?"
"Indeed it can, Lady Vera," Validar says with a proud smile gracing his face. "The Kingdom was formed when Victor the 1st and his adventuring partners pushed back the hordes of humanoids rampaging across the area. Recently, as I mentioned, Ilefarn has been reclaimed by adventurers and returned to the dwarves. Even the siege of Gateway was lifted primarily due to the interference and action of the Seekers, my adventuring partners. History holds many tales of similar stories where a few strong-minded individuals changed the entire course of whole kingdoms."
Vera places her hands on Validar's chest and moves closer to the young noble. "I would do anything to reclaim Stone Ridge," she repeats in a more sultry voice. "If you can accomplish what you say, then I will do whatever you wish, milord." She beams up at the much taller man.
"I am quite pleased to hear your response, milady. Come, I have someone I'd like you to meet. In the meantime, I have need of information."
"Information, Lord Validar? I do not have much information on Stone Ridge that you do not seem to already know," Vera answers with a quizzical look on her face.
"The questions on Stone Ridge will come later," Validar states as he leads Lady Vera towards the soldiers courtyard area. "In the meantime, there are many questions about Corunglain and Elcadan that I have. Your presence will assist in gaining such information. In fact there may be answers that you already possess and not even know."
"I am very confused now, good sir. My family is gone. I am the last of my father's line to my grandfather, Lord Lethick. No one takes me seriously at court. I am truly only afforded such status by the grace of the other nobles. What can I accomplish?"
"Their lack of true respect is exactly what I am counting on, milady. If they do not take you seriously, then you are not a threat and you can learn much from tongues that would be stopped up by a perceived stronger threat."
"I am not certain that I will have much effect in court, milord," Vera says warily.
Validar stops for a moment and turns to his companion. "If you bring me what I desire, then I vow to liberate Ardelphia and all of Stone Ridge. This I swear. Now come, here is the man I want to introduce to you." The pair steps into the courtyard and towards the combat practice areas. "Lord Corley! I apologize for the lateness of my arrival. But I have someone who would be very interested to meet you."

Corley
Corley:
His latest visit to Pyris Castle had rapidly turned out to not be what he had expected. With the Baron taken ill by unknown magical means, Corley did whatever he could to help the family deal with this crisis. Alas, his skills in such things are limited. About the only thing he could do to fulfill his vow was stand guard.
In younger days, Corley Rowan had spent many a day in this castle. The youngest son of General Logan, Corley only saw his father sporadically. Usually he was away commanding forces under the direction of the King himself. That usually left Corley to travel with his mother. Among her favorite places to visit was Castle Pyris.
In their younger days, General Logan and the Baron of Pyris had adventured together. Corley particularly liked to visit as he got to play with Validar and annoy Validar's younger sister Rachel. It was a particularly cherished time in Corley's life.
It had been years since Corley had the opportunity to visit again. In that time he had grown from a boy into a man. The change was startling to those who hadn't seen Corley in a long time. Much muscle had been added to his lanky body and his boyish good looks had been refined and chiseled. Even Lady Rachel was looking at Corley in a different way, and Corley had to admit he was looking at her in a new light.
Corley had seen some minor adventuring this year, but nothing like that of his friend Validar. Corley was looking forward to sharing tales with his friend.
Many hours after passing briefly in the hallway outside of the Baron's bedchamber, Corley and Validar finally had their conversation. It was decided to engage in practice swordplay to test each other's mettle. Corley was mildly surprised to see Validar arrive with the Lady Ardel in tow.
"Lord Corley! I apologize for the lateness of my arrival. But I have someone who would be very interested to meet you."
A bright smile comes to Corley's face upon seeing the lovely Lady Vera. "I should have known that something more important would delay you, Lord Validar. No doubt you've already been thrilling the young maiden with your heroic tales and deeds of valor?"
Setting his practice sword aside, Corley steps to meet the arriving couple. "I've already had the pleasure of meeting the Lady Ardel. I must say that you are looking particularly lovely on this fine day." Gallantly, Corley gently kisses the back of the lady's hand. "'Tis a tragedy what befell her family. Aye, the restoration of Stone Ridge would give bards stories that would be retold for generations to come! Were I only more experienced in the ways of battle, I would personally take up such a quest! Or should I assume that Lord Validar has already taken up such a quest? Truly, no warrior worth his salt could refuse to assist such a lovely damsel in distress."

VALIDAR -
Validar watches as Corley makes his re-acquaintance with the Lady Vera. A knowing grin forms on his features.

Validar leans in closer and speaks. "There is already far more in the works than simply the recovery of Stone Ridge." He drops his voice even fainter. "But with so many ears about, this is not the place to discuss such matters."
Corley has a questioning look on his face and then the idea fully forms in his head. "I see your point, Validar. A discussion for another time then." He looks toward Lady Vera again with a growing smile and a happy raise of his eyebrows.
"Excuse us, Lady Vera," Validar states. "We have an appointment together, Lord Corley and I." Validar heads to a waiting rack and chooses some practice weapons.
"Please watch, milady," Corley eagerly offers to the waiting Vera. "We would be honored by your continued presence."
"I would be most pleased, my lords." Vera smiles warmly at the young noble. "Of course, I cannot possibly be asked to choose sides amoungst you."
"We would not dream of forcing such a decision upon you, milady," Validar states as he brandishes his practice sword and a shield. "Come my friend, it is time to test your mettle!", Validar rumbles. "Lady Vera will be waiting for your attentions when we have completed our sparring."

Conquer or Die!
VALIDAR / CORLEY / VERA -
Lord Corley kisses the hand of Lady Vera again quickly, just before dashing over to reclaim his practice sword and helmet. The two lords salute each other with their weapons. Validar has chosen a longsword and shield combination, which is his typical battle selection. Corley meanwhile has chosen a two-handed sword.
"I've been waiting to compare my skills against the famous Lord Validar for some time now," Corley states as the two start to circle slowly.
"Come then, my friend," Validar goads. "Let us see what you have learned during our time apart." The two exchange a few probing sword thrusts and blocks. Validar lets Corley dictate the pace of the attacks and exchanges.
"Come, Validar," Corley admonishes. "Do not go easy on me. Let me see the true skill you possess!" The two exchange more blows and each time Validar catches Corley's assaults on his own sword or with his shield turns them aside. Validar follows up with counter-attacks and some feints, but with none of them so far does he truly try to press his younger opponent.
"Very well, Corley. I was just testing your skill. Now we shall step up the level a bit, as you requested." Validar feints with a wide overhand sweep of his sword, which Corley easily blocks. Then using his shield to fend off any further attacks, Validar slides in closer and whacks Corley in the side with his weapon. The assembled soldiers clap for their Lord, as the fighters part slightly.
"That was a quick manever, Validar," Corley says as he rubs his side slightly. "Come let us continue."
"Very well." Having received the first strike against him, Corley stepped up his own assaults in an agressive manner. Corley's strikes came in repeatedly at various levels from Validar's sword side. In rapid succession Validar blocked each of the heavy swings, but it was getting harder with each strike since Corley had the leverage. Corley yelled and grunted with each of the powerful blows he swung. Seeing that it was going to be impossible to simply block each strike, Validar changed his tactics quickly and reached across his body with his shield. Pivoting his hips, he stepped into the next strike, aimed at his body and blocked it with his shield. Continuing around, he used his momentum to spin and aim a strong blow at Corley's helmet.
Corley saw the move develop and with wide eyes barely ducked his head aside as Validar's swing carried over his head. He could feel the windrush of the blow as it passed barely without making contact. The two stepped apart again.
"That was impressive," Corley said as he breathed heavily.
"But you avoided it. Impressive in its own right." Validar saluted again and slashed his blade in front of him as they began to circle again. "But I remain unmarked," he goaded again.
"Let's see how long you can remain that way, milord!" With a yell, Corley jumped to the attack again. Three wild and powerful swings aimed at Validar's helmet, but all were blocked. A fourth strike came in partially overhead and this was the moment Validar was waiting for. He blocked the swing on his sword and as his blade was now inside his opponent's weapon, a quick roll of the wrist and Validar's sword struck Corley along the side of the head.
"You are making a fool of me, my friend!", Corley protests as he readjusts his helmet.
"Not at all, I am simply taking advantage of your overly aggressive attacks. Against most foes, you would fare quite well by overwhelming them. However, I feel you are somehow holding back," Validar explains. "Come, press me like your life depends on it!" Moving in closer, Validar swings a wild swing before Corley is completely ready. The younger noble backs away barely and raises his own sword in defense.
"Aye! I see your point. Very well, have it your way!" Corley rushes forward and unleashes a powerful series of blows. His attacks are coordinated and he fends off some of Validar's counter-attacks as well. The two exchange some powerful blows for some moments as the combat escalates. The crowd around them moves closer and grows as the battle continues. Suddenly Corley brings down his sword in a powerful overhead smash. Validar sees the clumsy attack and moves to block it on his shield.
With a terrible cracking sound, everyone is amazed to see Corley's sword splinter through Validar's shield and also shatter itself. The two stop in mid-combat to survey the scene. Validar looks at the shattered remains of the shield, still barely strapped to his forearm. Corley looks on a bit sheepishly for a moment, holding his now much shorter weapon. "I apologize, milord. I should not have been using these magical gauntlets in our combat," Corley offers.
"Nonsense," Validar says, dismissing the thought easily. "Better to practice as we would in actual combat."
Attendants come running in to check on the combatants. "Are you injured, Lord Validar?!", they state in a jumble of concerned voices.
"I am fine," Validar says with a smile. "But I fear this shield has given its life to protect mine," he jokes. "Surely, you do not realize the strength you wield. Next time I shall be more careful to not taunt you so much." The attendants spend a few moments extricating Validar from the jumbled mess attached to his arm and he hands his sword to one of the men. "Come, Corley, let us retire for some refreshment."

Lady Vera Ardel
Lady Vera Ardel:
Lady Vera watches the mock combat between the two young lords with great interest. For the first time in a very long time a measure of hope is felt inside of her. Lady Vera has to admit that she is very impressed by this Lord Validar. He seems to be living up to the grand stories about him, a rare thing these days where bards tend to exaggerate, making heroes appear so much larger than life.
For so long Lady Vera felt all alone in the world. She had the misfortune of being born into a family of landed nobles who had lost their lands under the onslaught of humanoids from the Broken Lands. Many of her ancestors had died during those dark days. A few did survive. Some tried to gain support and reclaim their lands. Most perished vainly in the attempt.
Still others simply relocated, content to simply abandon their ancestral lands. Such was the case with Lady Vera's parents. They permanently moved to the family's estate in Alexandria, the capital of the Kingdom. That was where Vera was born and raised.
Lady Vera grew up amongst the other nobility of the Inner Kingdom. Most were nice to her. That she blossomed into a most desirable young woman didn't hurt either. However, Vera felt that the other nobles looked down on her family behind their backs.
As she grew up her father and mother told her many stories of Stone Ridge. They had both grown up there and knew of the holding's former glory. Stone Ridge was nestled in a valley between two mountain ranges. The mines were the primary source of income for the town. They extracted ore from the ground. Much of it was used to forge weapons in defense of the town. The rest of it was shipped to the rest of the kingdom in exchange for other goods.
Fort Fletcher eventually fell to the humanoid hordes, and in turn the City of Ardelphia followed. The fort was the first line of protection for the city. With it gone, Ardelphia was more exposed.
The stories made Vera's desire to see her homeland for herself grow stronger. Somehow she would see her family's name and honor restored. Just how she didn't know.
Her parents died young leaving Lady Vera all alone. She sold the family estate to one of the other noble families to raise capital. Gathering her courage Lady Vera set out to reclaim her families lost land. This was a task that would consume the next several years of Vera's life.
Her first destination was the City of Corunglain, the capital city of the Duchy of the same name. In better times the Barony of Stone Ridge was part of the Duchy of Corunglain.
The Duke and Duchess of Corunglain were most charming hosts. Duke Vardon was more concerned in keeping his own city protected from the humanoid hordes. Being on a main path out of the Broken Lands made Corunglain a key defensive position for the entire Kingdom. Should Corunglain fall, hordes of humanoids could sweep into the Kingdom almost unchecked. Lady Vera could understand his concern.
Duke Vardon agreed that reclaiming Stone Ridge was an important goal, just one currently beyond his ability to accomplish. Reclaiming Fort Runnels was his immediate goal, as it was the fort nearest to Corunglain in enemy hands. Ardelphia was even further away.
Duchess Natalie was a charming hostess. But she seemed more interested in having Lady Vera marry one of her four sons than helping recover her lost lands. The Corun boys were fine, handsome lads, but none gave Lady Vera the confidence that they could reclaim Stone Ridge.
Lord Cavius of Rennydale wasn't much help either. To tell the truth, he made Vera uncomfortable. He was an older single man. With no other ladies to keep her company, Lady Vera's visit was a short one.
Next on Vera's list was the Duke of Elcadan, Maurice. Duke Maurice refused to even meet with Lady Vera. Duchess Marta had a brief visit, but her arrogance and snobbish ways just put Vera off. Lady Vera's stay in Elcadan was very short.
Eventually, Vera made her way to the Barony of Pyris. She had heard good things about Baron Relon and his family. Thus far Vera had been made to feel very welcome. Baroness Lysandra was an excellent hostess. Her daughter, Lady Rachel, was a bit too aggressive for Vera's tastes. Seems she had the dream of following in her older brother's footsteps and becoming a Knight of the Realm. An unusual path to walk for a lady, but not completely unheard of.
As Vera watched the mock combat between the two young lords, she noticed the Lady Rachel watching as well. Rachel was also looking on with great interest. Lady Vera had noticed the young woman watching Lord Corley before. Not surprising since Lady Vera had done the same herself. The youngest son of the renowned General Logan was a fine specimen of a man. Tall, handsome, muscular with broad shoulders; a worthy choice for a husband.
But it was this Lord Validar that really attracted Vera’s interest. Somehow he seemed so confident, so larger than life, that statements that might seem impossible from the lips of others seemed possible when spoken from his. Others had taken up the quest to reclaim Stone Ridge in the past. Those few who did return to Lady Vera’s side proclaimed the task impossible. Compared to those, Lord Validar seemed like the proverbial knight in shining armor.
“Magnificent aren’t they?”, Lady Rachel stated.
“Indeed, Lady Rachel. Most impressive young men.”
The fight suddenly comes to an end when Lord Corley splinters his practice sword upon Lord Validar’s shield, the shield shattering in the process. Attendants rush in to see if there are any injuries. Lady Rachel moves to join them; Vera follows at a much slower pace.
“A fine display of swordsmanship,” Lady Rachel compliments. “Give me a few more years and I’ll be ready to take you boys on.” With a mischievous grin, Rachel adds, “And beat you.”
“Confidence was never lacking within Castle Pyris,” Lord Corley suggests with an equally playful grin. “I look forward to our duels to come, Lady Rachel. I think they should prove most interesting.”
“Don’t worry, Corley. I’ll go easy on you.” Lady Rachel’s comments bring a chuckle from those present. “Why don’t you boys go freshen up and we’ll join for lunch?”
“Will you be joining us, Lady Vera?” Lord Validar quickly asks.
“It would be my honor, milord. I shall join you shortly.”
After saying her goodbyes, Lady Vera returns to her chambers to prepare for the repast to come.
Corley
Corley:
The area seems to noticeably brighten once Lady Vera enters. Young Lord Corley finds it hard not to stare at the lovely lady. The story of her family’s plight cannot help but play upon his heartstrings. For someone of such noble upbringing to be reduced to begging for help strikes a strong chord inside the young noble.
Aye, if only he was more skilled in battle, and perhaps with a unit of crack warriors, then the reclamation of Stone Ridge could begin! What sort of military campaign would his father have taken to accomplish this goal? Lord Corley was not sure.
But there was more than the tragedy of Lady Vera’s family that stirred fires within Lord Corley. The young man desired to be with Lady Vera. To care for her, to be near to her. Alas it seemed that the fair maiden had eyes for Lord Validar. The way she smiled at him with hope dancing in her eyes.
Given his reputation and accomplishments, Corley knew it was a fair choice to make. Validar had earned his reputation in battle. Corley had yet to do so.
As the mock combat came to an end, Corley could see that Lady Rachel had joined Lady Vera in watching. How little Rachel had grown. From a little girl into a delightful young woman. Not as curvaceous and full of body as Lady Vera, but a feast for the eyes all the same.
“A fine display of swordsmanship,” Lady Rachel compliments as she draws nearer. “Give me a few more years and I’ll be ready to take you boys on.” With a mischievous grin, Rachel adds, “And beat you.”

“On the contrary, milady,” Corley adds. “The honor shall be ours.”
Corley watches Lady Vera depart with Lady Rachel. Once they are gone from sight, he’ll go and freshen up, looking forward to the lunch to come with the delightful ladies.

We fight for King and Country!
Behind the scenes...
Lord Validar -
Validar had enjoyed the duel with Corley. It had been some time since he had raised his sword in a non-lethal situation. The combats with the Seekers had all been to the death.
Validar's mind quickly turned back to more important matters however, as he walked the halls of Castle Pyris. His first stop after refreshing himself from the fighting was to the Baron's scribe, Lars Belbin. Belbin's father had been the scribe for Validar's great-grandfather and Lars had learned the family business, taking over while Validar's grandfather ruled the Barony. The Belbin's were well-known and well-respected by the ruling family of Pyris and well compensated for their duties.
Validar stepped into the main library and was quickly met by Lars' youngest daughter, Lara. Upon recognizing the young noble, she quickly curtsied. "How may I assist you, milord?" Validar had spent much of us formative years studying in this library. Lara had grown up here too, splitting time between here and in the kitchen where Lars' wife assisted for a time. They had known each other quite well at a younger age. In fact, Lara was the first girl Validar had ever kissed.
"I require some messages to be scribed, Lara."
"Validar? Is that you?" An old man steps out of the next room, walking unsteadily and looking about. "My eyesight is not what it once was. Where are you, my boy?"
Validar strode over to the man and cupped him lightly on the shoulder. "It is good to see you again, Lars. I trust you are well."
"Lara, here, she's learning the art of scribing. And none too soon, my old fingers can barely hold a quill these days. Seven other daughters and not a one of them interested in books and knowledge."
"I am certain that your family's legacy is in good hands," Validar says, casting a glance at Lara. She blushes slightly and turns her head.
"But you didn't come here only to listen to an old man's troubles," Lars says as he leads them all to a table to sit.
"Nonsense," Validar corrects him. "I learned to read thanks to your teachings. I don't know how I would have learned Alphatian without your assistance. I think I can find a few moments to listen to your fascinating stories once more."
"You are already forming your own tales of glory and heroics. You don't need any of my silly old tales." Lars starts to cough, but eventually manages to clear his throat. "The Belbins have served the Barony of Pyris well for many, many years. How may we assist you, Lord Validar?"
"I have need of some official communications."
"Lara, go and get your pouch," Lars directs.
Soon Validar has his collection of scrolls, all bearing the seal of Pyris. The first is a message to the Lord Cavius of Rennydale. It is thanking Cavius for the fine present of wine and the remarkable quality it bears this season. This should help keep anyone who reads it either wondering what went wrong or completely clueless that there was a problem.
The next message is directed to the Duke of Corunglain and inquires into the recovery of Fort Runnels: how soon the Duke has plans to try and reclaim it and how many troops are available in the campaign. It also briefly mentions Validar's personal wish to see the borders of the Kingdom strengthened and the offer of assistance in taking back the fort.
Finally, he has a message directed back to his friends, the Seekers, based in Gateway. Many of the Seekers are busy this late fall, some with the exploration of the teleport grid they found, some with the new birth of Zynara and Blod's baby, Ross. However, he still extends a request for assistance to any Seekers not already engaged otherwise. Any available can meet up with him at Castle Pyris. Validar does not expect to receive much response to this message. Still he knows they can be counted on, most of them anyway.
After ensuring the delivery of the messages, Validar catches up with his mother once more. She is bedside of his father and Validar takes her away for a bit to talk and walk.
"Thank you for helping me to take my mind off this terrible, terrible situation, my son." Lysandra smiles warmly at her son.
"Think nothing of it. However, I do have a request from you, Baroness."
"Ah, you always call me that when you are getting serious, Validar. What is on your mind?"
"Forgive me, mother. But you are the Baroness afterall." Lysandra just smiles, knowing that her son learned the rules of nobility far too well. "I would like to have the services of one of your Ladies. But it must be someone you trust implicitly."
"Lady Angelina would be a fine choice. She is one of my strictest confidants. What do you require her to do?"
"Ah, yes, Sir Belfor's youngest daughter. Very good. I want her to attend to Lady Ardel's needs while she is here."
"Why do I have the feeling that this is not just about noble pleasantries?"
"You are correct, Baroness. I want to watch her, to listen to her, who she talks to and about what and to learn if she is who she says she is. Angelina should be perfect to endear herself to milady Vera's good graces."
Baroness Lysandra smiles approvingly at her son's plans. He will make a fine Baron himself one day.
