New Frontiers #107

Road to Elcadan:

Lyonessa wrote:"What about Phelan?" Lyonessa asks her sister as they get into the carriage. "Will he also be heading to Elcadan or does he have other plans?"
“He’ll ride along to keep an eye on me,” Myveria easily answers. “Maybe we’ll hang around here for a while. It’s been great being with you again and I’m not really ready to say goodbye just yet.”
Sherra wrote:Sherra will move ahead and mingle in the crowd. She will try to get the sense of anything wrong or see if she spots an assassin or spy. She sees nothing so obvious, and is actually questioned about the new Duke. "Like you, I'm not sure just what to expect," she says with some truth. Sherra isn't sure exactly what the Duke will be doing. "I am holding out that this change will be good though."
“We’ll see,” the man mutters. “He’s still a noble and you just can’t trust them.”

A bit further out, men from High Guard approach the procession.
Validar wrote:"Hail to you, Sgt. Levine," Validar responds. "You are welcome to join our ranks. You and your men may ride behind the Pyrisian cavalry just ahead of us."
“Thank you, milord!” At the sergeant’s direction, the men move into the formation.

A bit further back, Chareos and Cereld observe the new arrivals.
Chareos wrote:"Be on Guard," Chareos says to Cereld, "Our last meeting was not one to speak of." As several tense moments unnerve him slightly.
“I am always on guard, especially with Validar around,” Cereld answers with a chuckle. “But these men would have to be fools to attack in such a brazen manner.”

The procession enters into Elcadan and at the Streelspan Bridge, the new Duke speaks to the people, seemingly gaining the support of many. From there the procession continues into Old Town and the City Council Hall.
Chareos wrote:"Ah council members, Think they would suckle from a nursing dragon if it would suite their cause." He says to Cereld with a chuckle.
“I have not spent much time in this city,” Cereld notes, “but it seems that their dislike of nobles and politicians is not without merit.”

City Council Halls:

The procession stops before the City Council Halls. It is here where the Duke will begin his work. He and his advisors, the various high priests and Lady Sallavarian, go inside. Some of the Guardians stand by in case they are needed, while others are sent out on tasks.
Validar wrote:Validar dismounts as well, when the Duke arrives at the Council Hall and turns his mount and lance over to squire Ebonov. Validar greets the existing councilmen, "Greetings, I am Validar Van Arkus, Baron of Pyris. I will be maintaining the military presence here for the Duke until it can be transitioned to a more permanent local commander."
“Very good, Baron Validar,” Lord Cranmer notes. “Bringing order to Elcadan is most welcomed. I am one of the very few nobles left in this city. The others left or just withered away. I am also the Master of the Goldsmith’s Guild.”

“Well met, Baron,” Adelard adds. “I am a simple merchant dealing with timber and preserved fish who was called upon to serve on the City Council.”
Validar wrote:Validar will have Sergeant Levine and his men go to the granaries to supervise the dispersal of the food stores. Clearly order will need to be maintained and Validar hears Regnak mention the same to Sir Corley. "Sergeant, take control of as many of the soldiers in the area as possible to control order. Keep the lines orderly and allow anyone who is clearly old or infirm to receive their portions first."
“At once, milord!” Sergeant Levine takes his men to the nearby granaries and helps maintain order. Sir Corley rides past and everything seems to be going well. The line is rather long.

After the Duke and his advisors go into the Council Hall, Validar will hand out assignments.
Validar will take in what Sherra and Regnak have to say when they join the group. He will send them back out into the town for a short while to see what they can overhear in taverns and businesses as it is almost certain that word is getting around now. He would like to know the general feeling of the people, besides what he has already seen. He also wants them to inquire as to anything about this Mortimer who was on the Council and is now missing.
Any particular area of town that Sherra and Regnak want to explore? Mortimer is yet another merchant and he is the Master of the Weaver’s Guild. His home is here in Old Town and is within sight of the City Council Hall. The other missing Councilmen are as follows:

Lord Furnow: Former head of the City Council, Master of the Merchant’s guild, Metal Merchant. Furnow is perhaps the most powerful man in Elcadan. He ruled over the City Council with an iron hand and is very wealthy. Furnow was awarded the title of Court Lord several years ago and he has an estate on the Nobles Island.

Lord Gotmun: Member of the City Council, Master of the Moneychanger’s Guild (i.e. bank). Another very powerful and wealthy man. His title is also honorary and he has an estate on the nobles’ island that was repossessed when the previous lord sunk money into unprofitable business dealings.

Pander: Member of the City Council. Merchant dealing with exotic products from far lands. Pander’s true source of wealth is the land itself. He owns much the waterfront district in New Town and that’s where his home is.

Bulema: Member of the City Council, hides and leather merchant. His home and business is in Old Town.

Validar will have Cereld and Chareos go to the inn the Seekers are staying at and have them return to the Hall. Validar wants to find out what they have learned before the make any further plans. While he is waiting for them to arrive, he will meet with several of the local soldiers and their leaders and introduce himself as well as get a feeling for the overall troop quality and readiness. As well as their current morale, with the recent changes in leadership. He will ask about the defenses of the Castle and about the Duke's Guard and their notable leaders. This will likely only be resolved through battle, but the baron hopes that can be avoided.
There are actually two different sets of city guards in Elcadan. Theoretically, the Duke’s Guard should patrol the entire town. In actuality they only police the two islands and never enter those parts of town on the mainland. The guards at the Streelspan Bridge is the outer limit of their patrol zone.

To help fill this gap, the Free Guard was created. These are men and women who volunteer to keep law and order in the Crosstown Area. They try to go south into the slums, but can only safely go so far, as there are others who keep their own order in the slums and don’t care for outside interference.

Many members of the Free Guard are adventurers who help keep the order when they are in town. Priests of Helm and Heironeous assist as well. The leader of the Free Guard is a man called Jaben. Jaben is here at the Council Hall, so he can be questioned.

The majority of the Duke’s Guard are holed up in the Duke’s Fortress and haven’t ventured out in days. The commander of the Duke’s Guard is a man called Frietaug. Frietaug is a master swordsman and in addition to his duties he runs the School of Arms where combat and weapons training is taught. Frietaug is widely feared and known to take great delight in putting down troublemakers. He and his men are the physical might of the Council.

Most of the city guards here are from the Free Guard, as after the identity of the Duchess was revealed to the public, the Duke’s Guard withdrew to their garrison at the Duke’s Castle. The morale of the Free Guard is very high. Anyone getting too close to the Duke’s Castle has had arrows and crossbow bolts fired at them. The Duke’s Guard seems to be bunkered down as if they are expecting a siege.

The Duke’s Castle is completed surrounded by high walls that are patrolled. Inside the grounds is the garrison for the Duke’s guards. The Duke’s Castle takes up most of the space and is the second highest structure in Elcadan, next to the Mage Guild’s tower. The main parts of the castle are three stories high, but towers and battlements go up even higher with the highest point six stories up.

There are three entrances to the Duke’s Fortress. One is by the High Road on the Noble’s Island. There is a direct bridge from Old Town to the Fortress Courtyard. Lastly there is a dock for vessels belonging to the Duke out on the Streel River.

Those inside the Council Hall are witness to the stream of people seeking an audience with the new Duke. Among the first is a man called Ost. Ost is the Master of the Millers Guild and by all rights should be a wealthy man. He owns much farmland where grain is grown and also owns one of the two mills here in town. But here is where the laws passed by the City Council have kept him in near poverty.

By law, all grain grown on the Duke’s land must be sold to the Duke at a fixed price. The grain s then sold back to the millers for a profit. To further ensure that this practice is upheld, it is illegal for any grain not owned by the Duke to be transported! There are taxes on each step of the process and the end result is that Ost and those like him barely make enough to survive while the City Council gets rich.

“I am not a greedy man, Your Grace,” Ost states. Ost himself is a physically imposing man who gives you the impression that he could lift a millstone on his own. “But I believe that a man should be rewarded with the fruits of his labor. If one works hard, he should succeed.”

“I agree, Master Ost,” Duke Relon states. “You and all the other farmers may grow your grain and transport it to market as you see fit and sell it for a reasonable price. All that I would ask is that some of your grain be set aside to feed my troops and family.”

“That is most fair, Your Grace,” Ost responds a bit surprised. “I gladly welcome you to Elcadan.”

These kinds of horror stories are common in Elcadan. The Guild System and the laws in place favor the wealthy. For instance another example is that only Furnow can legally sell raw silver and gold in Elcadan. He buys it from the mines at barely a fair value, sells it to the workers who refine it, and gains the taxes on the process each step of the way.

Chareos and Cereld will have not ridden far before encountering the Seekers. The inn they were staying at is located right next to the High Road and they noted the Duke’s passage. After the streets cleared up a bit, they followed into Old Town.

What new information that they can add to what’s already been covered, is that the Slums are ruled by a collection of individuals called the Slum Lords. The Slum Lords are not an organized force; rather these are strong-willed individuals who have carved out a domain in this area. Some care for those living in their areas, while others are most unpleasant individuals. There are some alliances among the Slum Lords. There is one trio of Slum Lords who make good contacts. They are Corlichus, the Master of the Tanner’s Guild, and the two women who organized the prostitutes of the Slums, Bellaria and Mortana. Their areas of the slums are the most ‘pleasant’.

Another Slum Lord of note is a former sailor named Zahara. She hasn’t been here long and has already made some enemies. Other less savory Slum Lords include Gondril, a wizard of great skill and Bahdler, the shadowy master of the thieves’ guild.

GM Notes:

I’ve updated the sheets for Lyonessa, Argent, Chareos and Sherra for the new magic items. Town Maps for Elcadan have been updated to show where locations mentioned in post are.

The Nobles Island is split up into two portions. The Duke’s Fortress which includes the barracks for all of Elcadan’s military and the castle for the ruling family themselves. The southern part of the island is split up into four estates. One belongs to Lord Cranmer and another was held by the Deville family that now sits abandoned. Lord Furnow has the third estate with Lord Gotmun holding the last. Lord Furnow’s is the largest, with Lord Cranmer’s being the smallest.

Now what?

back out and about..

Sherra:

When she gets a moment, Sherra informs Validar, "The people are generally curious but cautious. Some just see this as trading one noble for another, as if all are interchangeable. I'm confident that mood will change as His Grace shows them just how different things truly will be."

"I didn't see anyone out of place or any of us being followed," Sherra adds. "Whatever agents remain are either in hiding or planning something else I haven't uncovered yet."
Validar will take in what Sherra and Regnak have to say when they join the group. He will send them back out into the town for a short while to see what they can overhear in taverns and businesses as it is almost certain that word is getting around now. Sherra will plan on going to the waterfront district. She is more comfortable there, able to easily blend in. There's no worry about whether her mannerisms are right or that she carries herself a certain way. She'll ask around in taverns over an ale about the recent goings on, especially with Pander. She'll also talk with the vendors and workers along the waterfront. She'll drop coin if she has to in order for a few palms to be greased, but will do so very selectively. She would much rather get her information freely.

Sherra will also try to learn anything she can about any talk of slavers or pirates. It might just be the same old stories about the islands to the south, but with the flying slaver ship, there might be something more to learn. Finally she will make sure she isn't being tailed and keep an eye out for anyone who seems suspicious or out of place. There's no telling what enemies might still be lurking about.

Acerion remains stoic at his place near the Duke. He takes in everyone coming in, making note of them. As the paladin is able, he concentrates on determining if any radiate evil. Although it would be a bold move, it would be an impactful one for the enemy to strike so publicly.

“There was no opposition from what I seen though with the amount of people present finding such things would be difficult at best. It seems the people are skeptical of our presence.

Bulema of Old town would also hold interest to being sought after.
While looking at Bulema’s business he will casually look for new armor, boots and the likes. While doing so he will ask simple questions as to who made it and where the leather came from. He will talk to vendors, workers. If need to be he will sit within the taverns for a time listening and buy ale and stronger drink to those who seem worthy of such (i.e. little information give them something in return in the hopes for more).

“Is a fool’s blade any duller?” he asks in reply.
“I have not spent much time in this city,” Cereld notes, “but it seems that their dislike of nobles and politicians is not without merit.”
“If only they knew there was little truth in the lives they lived for these long years.”

Chareos listens to the report from the Seekers, “Where can these people be found?” he asks curiously. He wonders if he had heard the name of Zahara before though perhaps her talents could be needed as well as the other three.

Looking to Cereld, “This Corichus, Bellaria and Mortana sound as though they may be of use to us. Even this Zahara, even though she has enemies. The enemy of my enemy could be an ally.” Looking to the Seekers, “If it is agreeable, I would like to send word to these individuals,” thinking it better not to get the nobles involved at the present moment. “But let us return, before we get ahead of ourselves.”

Lyonessa:

“Yes, there is,” Argent will answer. “There is the Theatre of the Muse in New Town. They are known to hold plays and recitals. I’ve never been to one myself, but I am told that the wealthy frequent it. I can recall many an aspiring actor or actress visiting Jallarzi seeking sponsorship. I guess it’s some sort of status symbol among the well-to-do to sponsor a performer.”

"I will have to check it out," Lyonessa says. "Thank you." She knows she can't do it yet but she plans to add that to the places to see while they are in Elcadan.

“He’ll ride along to keep an eye on me,” Myveria easily answers. “Maybe we’ll hang around here for a while. It’s been great being with you again and I’m not really ready to say goodbye just yet.”

"I'm not ready to say goodbye yet either," Lyonessa agrees. "I just thinking that you two were doing your own thing before all of this happened. I didn't know if you were going to be wanting to get back to it."

There really isn't too much that's asked of Lyonessa right now, so she hangs around to listen to the people outside the council hall. A lot of rumor and speculation she guesses, but something important might be said. Otherwise she will continue with her recording of the group's adventures and composing. She also will want to go to the temple too, and hopes there will be time to do everything.

Conversations and plans

Baron Validar -

Gabriella -
“Such a thing would be a tremendous boon to commerce as well. The ability to quickly move goods from one location to another and even open up new trade routes with distant lands would be extremely beneficial. If these are as common as we’ve been led to believe in Alphatia, then it is no wonder that they are a powerful empire.”
"It would be a boon to everything that is enhanced by rapid movement: commerce, exploration, settlements, military. It is similar to first learning to sail ont he seas or to use horses for transportation, but multiplied immensely."

"That is good to know. We do not know what may happen and unfortunately our sphere of enemies will only grow. I must admit that I am looking forward to seeing you regaled in Zakharian finery."

Gabriella laughs at those comments. “I am sure that most ladies of the court would find my attire to be most scandalous!”
"It is not the ladies of the court's opinions that I am interested in. However, I think it more likely that you would start a new fashion trend. That is the way these things tend to go; a fine line between scandal and admiration and ultimately copying."

Validar turns a bit more serious however, a moment later. "There is one bit of information that I feel I must share with you, on a personal level. We have recovered the bodies of two of the fallen Seekers and they may be brought back to the living, should their spirits agree."

“Then that is good news, is it not?” Gabriella inquires.

"One of them was a ranger named Arafel and the two of us were close at the time. While my feelings for her were never stronger than a personal affinity, I feel that I must share this with you as she may join my re-assembled Seekers. I would rather you know now and I will be certain to make her aware of the situation as it now stands."

An impish grin comes to Gabriella’s face, one that she tries to hide but doesn’t completely succeed in.

“My dear, Validar, I never assumed that I was your first, but if you know what’s good for you, then I will be the last.”
"That is not to be concerned with, my love. I am yours for all time. But I think you are missing my point. It wasn't that there may have been another before you, but that I am not certain of Arafel's true feelings for me as we were just beginning to explore that area. If she is brought back to life, these months that have passed will not have happened for her. To her, little would have changed since the day she was killed. I did not want something unexpected to happen and you not be aware of it."

Sir Corley -
"Sherra has looked at the maps and logs, but has informed me that it will take some time to go through them. Something we have not had in great abundance of late," Validar responds. "Once we have completed the Duke's immediate needs then there is that possibility. We also have the Seekers to conduct missions we need done. However, more of these vessels would indeed be helpful."

“I understand,” Sir Corley simply answers. “With my being out of touch, I was unsure what had been done on this front.”
"Indeed. And it is easy to forget that you missed some of what transpired, as well, my friend."

"As for need of the Blackhawk specifically, if I understand it correctly, it is her flags that identify here for the most part. I will discuss this idea with Sherra at greater length when the time comes to prepare for such a mission. For now, we have not even identified an alternate vessel for the Spell Engine."

“While it is true that its flags help identify a vessel, my point is that if this ship has visited these places many times then those there know what the ship looks like. They would be less suspicious of the Blackhawk herself than another vessel bearing its standard. It might be advantageous for us to enter these ports maintaining the guise of being slavers, at least for a time.”

“I do know a little about sailing, my friend. Did you forget my old brother Beltran is the Captain of the HMS Endeavour?”
"Yes, you are correct. Although the question remains how much one pays attention to the specifics of a ship such as this rather than its type and size and identification. Unless it is one of a few or there is some specific interest in the ship. However, for an infiltration type of mission, the Blackhawk herself would indeed be the least conspicuous."

Validar answers the question first to Sir Corley’s satisfaction. “I think I’ll take a ride over to the granaries to check up on things. It’s not far, so I shouldn’t be long.”
"Very well," Validar responds. With Corley's presence, everything is certain to go smoothly.

Some small updates to keep things moving...

Thus far, no one with any significant amount of evil has come close to the duke. Perhaps just a few greedy merchants at best, but no one capable of doing him any great harm.

Sherra and Regnak go out to scout the town some more.
Regnak wrote:To Sherra, as they are departing, "Perhaps we should walk past this Mortimer's residence to see what state the estate is in. While I realize Waterfront holds it's interest as well, this Mortimer may be of importance. Would you care for me to accompany you into the Waterfront, though only to observe you and who maybe observing you?"
Mortimer's home is a pleasant two-story dwelling of stone and wood. The outside is neat and clean and no movement can be spotted through the windows. The doors and windows are locked and no one will answer the door if you knock.
Regnak wrote:While looking at Bulema's business he will casually look for new armor, boots and the likes. Bulema's home is a small two-story affair that speaks to the owner's wealth. It's not a leather shop in the sense that Regnak is expecting. He just sells the hides that are used to make such products. He maintains an office in his home, but not a traditional shop. Much like Mortimer's place, the house is locked up, no one can be seen inside and any knocks on the door go unanswered.

Pander's holdings are along the southern part of New Town. The lower docks are called Pander's Wharf, and there are even two streets named after him, Pander's Walk, and Pander's Alley. There is some activity along the docks where a couple of river barges are being unloaded. Locations #44 & 45 are Pander's primary storage warehouses. All new merchandise is stored here under heavy guard.

The good's stored here are then taken to Pander's Bazarre (#27). The Bazarre is a long one-story building with a walkway right down the middle. On either side are eight merchant stalls, sixteen in all, where Pander's goods are hawked. The merchandise is exotic, often unique, and very expensive. Armed guards dressed in fine livery maintain order. Clearly this is a place where the wealthy come to shop.

Not far from the Bazarre is Pander's Inn. Clearly Pander has made New Town his own! Pander's crowning achievement is his home, dubbed Streelcove (#54). It is a three story mansion of polished stone with marble mixed into the mortar, causing it to gleam and glisten in the light. Trees and bushes have been skillfully arranged about the mansion to provide secluded walks and pathways. The three buildings behind the mansion are also part of the estate (#72-74). One houses Pander's stable, the other his kitchen, and the last is a guest house.

As she walks along, Sherra notices a few business of interest. The Wayside Tavern (#38). Secatrin’s Bootery (#39), the Harp & Horn (#40), & Tayla’s Spice Shop (#16).

The docks are not too crowded, but finding people to talk too isn’t a problem. What most find odd is that Pander hasn’t been seen for days now. He typically walks this part of town daily. The street Pander’s Walk was named after this activity. It’s very odd for him not to be seen like this.

There’s not much in the way of information on pirates or slavers. The dockworkers wouldn’t recommend any of the taverns in New Town to Sherra. One caters to the weavers and the other to travelers. Most prefer the Waterfront Tavern in the Crosstown district. It can be a bit rough and tumble there, but not as bad as the taverns in the slums.

There is a rumor that Zahara is a pirate queen, looking to retire in Elcadan. She took over part of the slums from its previous lord, a rope maker by the name of Wooster.

Looking to Cereld, "This Corlichus, Bellaria and Mortana sound as though they may be of use to us. Even this Zahara, even though she has enemies. The enemy of my enemy could be an ally." Looking to the Seekers, "If it is agreeable, I would like to send word to these individuals," thinking it better not to get the nobles involved at the present moment. "But let us return, before we get ahead of ourselves."
After speaking to the other Seekers, Cereld responds with, “All of these people were referred to us as good contacts by Lady Sallavarian. Zahara’s fief is the northeastern corner of the slums, while the other three are the westernmost in the southern portion. Given what is transpiring today, they may not even be there right now. Sir Acerion:

Thus far, no one with any significant amount of evil has come close to the duke. Perhaps just a few greedy merchants at best, but no one capable of doing him any great harm.

The paladin detects nothing evil. The selfish and greedy thoughts in men's hearts are not the same as the true driving force of evil that is a lifestyle of so many foul denizens of this plane and others. Acerion detects nothing that can do any great harm to the Duke this day. He will nonetheless remain at his post until they are finished here.

Sherra:
To Sherra, as they are departing, "Perhaps we should walk past this Mortimer's residence to see what state the estate is in. While I realize Waterfront holds it's interest as well, this Mortimer may be of importance. Would you care for me to accompany you into the Waterfront, though only to observe you and who maybe observing you?"
"Yes we should check out Mortimer's residence first," Sherra agrees. However they don't seem to find much of anything or anyone there. "No one home, or at least not coming to the door," Sherra says after trying the conventional approach. "We can always come back later and I can try a different way to gain entry," she says the last cryptically and with a smile.

"If you want to accompany me to Waterfront that's fine," Sherra says, but it really doesn't matter either way to her. She's not expecting any trouble of the sort that she can't get out of. Still, an extra set of eyes never hurts.

It's clear Pander is very influencial in New Town, seemingly making it his own. However, he has not been seen for days and Sherra begins to suspect foul play of some sort is at work. Most everyone is friendly and the information comes freely, but there just isn't much to be learned. There isn't even a good tavern in New Town.

The only thing of any interest she learns is that a once-pirate queen called Zahara is looking to put down roots in Elcadan. Sherra runs the name through her head to see if she remembers anything. There is always a number of influencial pirates and thieves who are women, but few that she figures would be so renowed to be considered a 'queen.' Of course, that could just be a self-assigned title.

Sherra will browse Tayla's Spice Shop to see if there's anything exotic there, otherwise there isn't much else for her to discover. She will meet up with Regnak outside of the district and tell him of her limited success. She's interested in uncovering more about this Zahara, but that's not why they were out this day. She'll return to Validar with the information she does have and see what the Baron thinks their next move should be.

The name Zahara doesn’t ring any bells to Sherra, Pirate Queen or otherwise.

A sweet smell emanates from the spice shop. It is a two-story stone and wood building with brightly colored trim. Flower boxes jut from the windowsills. The shop is filled with shelves of labeled jars and crocks. From just a glance, Sherra can see numerous common spices and many that she’s never heard of before.

Tayla herself comes forth to see if Sherra needs any assistance. She’s a tall, thin, beautiful woman. Her long honey colored hair cascades down to the small of her back. Her dress is very feminine and probably impractical when it comes to running a shop. She has deep brown eyes and her voice is high pitched, reminding Sherra of a child.

“Can I help you find something, miss? My stock is the finest in this part of the world.”

Sherra regards Tayla for a moment before going back to her browsing. Although she wasn't sure just what to expect of a spice shopkeeper, Tayla's appearance is furthest from her guesses. "Not really as I'm not really sure what I'm looking for," Sherra admits. "The shop just seemed interesting as I've travelled a number of places across the lands and seas, so I just thought I'd come in off the streets and take a look around to see if anything sounded familiar. It is quite the selection you have. Where do you get your shipments from?"

“Indeed it was, though getting away from the teasing of Sharadin’s daughters was beneficial. The first step is always the hardest, as is the last. Or so I have heard.”

“Aye, there is truth in what you say my friend.” clasping his hand on Cereld’s shoulder. “Let us return to the column. I am sure Validar will wish to hear this news himself.”

Chareos will take his leave and thank The seekers for their report. Then head to meet up with the column.

While the Duke Relon holds court in the City Council Hall, some of the Guardians are out scouting the city. Sherra has made her way into New Town to learn more about the missing Pander. She’s stopped in Tayla’s Spice Shop for information,
Sherra wrote:"Wow, so he travels quite a bit too, and he does sound wonderful helping to set all this up for you," Sherra says. "Is that why everyone says he isn't around, because he's off traveling once more?" she asks innocently.
“He has been wonderful to me,” Tayla will agree. “Pander doesn’t travel much any more. He has men who do that for him. He’s usually far to busy with council business to visit me any more. It is unusual for him not to be seen for this long.”

After returning to the Council Hall and relaying this information, the scouts go out once more in keeping with the wishes of the new Duke that the missing council members be found. This time, the scouts are to enter into the homes of Mortimer and Bulema to since they are the closest to see what can be learned.

Mortimer’s home is chosen first. Sherra, Regnak, Chareos, Cereld, and any other who wishes to go along are on hand for this task. Sherra picks the lock on the front door and the group makes their way warily inside.

A gruesome discovery is quickly made! Mortimer is found slumped over his meal at the dinning room table. He’s dead, but there are no marks on his body. His food remains half-eaten.

The story is the same throughout the house. Mortimer and his servants have all been killed. None of the victims appear to have been attacked by weapons. The contents of the house are in order. The crime does not seem to have been for profit; rather Mortimer and his staff were assassinated.

Back the Council Hall, a trio of unlike people are the next to have an audience with the Duke. Leading the way is a huge bear of a man. He stands 6’5” tall and has to be near 300 pounds. His face is almost completely obscured by his wild tangle of dark brown hair, bushy beard, and shaggy eyebrows. His arms are covered in matted hair as well, and his large, meaty hands are permanently stained. He introduces himself as Corlichus, Master of the Tanners Guild, but otherwise lets his companions do the talking.

With Corlichus is a tall and lean woman of great beauty. She’s nearly as tall of Corlichus and has shoulder length blonde hair that frames her youthful face. She wears a flattering dress. She introduces herself as Bellaria.

The last of the three is another woman. She’s a bit taller than average, but still shorter than Bellaria. She’s a bit more rough and tumble in her looks. She wears a leather vest over her blouse, with leather pants and knee high boots. Her blonde hair is cut short.

She is Mortana and she’s the first to speak. “We demand that something be done about Shahammus! He’s murdering our girls and no one is doing anything about it!”

Bellaria steps forward to stop Mortana’s tirade. “Forgive my friends outburst, Your Grace,” Bellaria states diplomatically. “There has been a string of murders of young women in the Slums district. We’ve lost several good people because of this and nothing is being done to put the culprit behind bars.”

“I see,” the Duke answers slowly. “What makes you think that this Shahamus is the guilty party?”

“He has publicly threatened to murder my girls and me ‘like the pigs we are’,” Mortana blurts out. “All we want is justice!”

This Shahammus is a large man of questionable hygiene. He is the Master of the Butcher’s Guild and has been known to carry an entire side of beef over his shoulder.

After the gruesome discovery at Mortimer’s home, the group rushes to Bulema’s house. Sherra picks the lock on the front door once more and the group goes inside. Whoever, no one does seem to be at home. No one is here, not even a servant. No long after entering the house, Cereld’s Battleaxe begins to glow a silvery blue!

“Be on guard!” Cereld calls out. “There is great evil here!”

Now what?

Sir Corley

Post by Corley »

Corley:

Politics were never of any great interest to Sir Corley in the past and they are not again this day. So when able, he excuses himself to make sure that other events about the city are unfolding peaceful. First he rides to see if the grain disbursement is proceeding orderly. It is, so he returns and reports what is transpiring.

The Duke then hands out a few assignments while he meets the populace of the city. The missing councilmen need to be found and the situation with the old Duke’s Guard resolved. They are currently held up in their Duke’s Castle, a proper Cynalonian fortress. It’s high walls make a formidable defense.

“Laying siege to the fortress does concern me,” Sir Corley will admit. “If the situation is the same as with the Blackhawk, it may be that the higher ups are under control of the demoness. The rank and file could simply be following orders. I feel we need to end this situation as quickly and with as little conflict as possible.”

“It accords to me that this might be a good opportunity to make use of the Blackhawk. After darkness falls, we can use it to rise above the castle and disembark at the upper levels, thus circumventing the defensive walls entirely. Once inside we can move forward and deal with this situation. Given the amount of magic we have here, we should be able to harmlessly neutralize most of the soldiers. Then we can deal with their masters.”

But before that time comes, it is decided to investigate the homes of the closest councilmen first. Mortimer’s is first and Sherra uses her talents to gain entry. Unfortunately, Mortimer and his staff are found dead! There does not seem to be any sign of violence.

“Poison?” Sir Corley will suggest, looking to Regnak and Sherra for their input. “Or perhaps magic?”

Moving on we arrive at the home of Bulema. Once more Sherra lets us in, but this time the home is merely deserted.

“Given what we know about these councilmen, it does appear that the four who are in league with each other have fled. Before doing so they or agents of them had Mortimer, their enemy assassinated. But where are they now?”

Cereld of Heironeous’ axe begins to glow! The priest then announces that,
Cereld wrote:“Be on guard!” Cereld calls out. “There is great evil here!”
Sir Corley draws his Greatsword and seeks to find the source of the threat.

“Whatever is in here, we must not let it escape into the city!”

Argent:

Once inside the Council Hall, Argent hovers on the edges of the room and tries to stay out of the way. At first she’s content to simply look pretty for all the visitors, but even that becomes old after a time. But before long and after listening to the many complaints the new Duke hears, Argent quickly comes to a truth about herself. It’s the trappings of power that appeal to her, not the responsibilities. She wants to be treated well and placed on a pedestal, but not having to work for it!

It quickly becomes apparent that there’s not many her she has to impress. Once more she’s incorrectly dressed for the situation. She even considers going out with Chareos and the others on their various assignments, but ultimately decides against it. Looks like Argent is stuck here for the time being.

Perhaps the Duke will be taking a dinner break sometime soon?

Ivy:

For the most part Ivy stays close to Sir Acerion. The sadness of the passing of Mother Boelle weights heavily on her mind and she’s not her normal self. The sadness of the plight of the people who come to see the Duke doesn’t help any. There’s been far too much misery on this city!

Occasionally there is some small talk going on while the Duke is holding court.

“Is this what it’s like?” Ivy will ask Sir Acerion. “I mean to be a ruler over a city like the Duke is. Having to listen what problem’s its citizens have?”

Talk then turns to how to deal with the city guards who have hold themselves up in the castle.

“I agree that we need to be gentle to those who are not really our enemies. Too much blood has already been shed.”

Baron Validar -

The duke gives some assignments to the Guardians. Before they head off, there is some discusion about the attack on the Fortress and the soldiers defending it.

"They may be held in sway and they may be misled, but they also chose to follow their leaders. There are consequences to actions and choices. However, I agree that if we can avoid bloodshed, then all the better."

"Sir Corley and Sir Acerion will be put in dual charge of the actions needed, with the New Seekers at your disposal as well. Seek out what you can and hopefully we can put a quick end to the potential conflict. If not, then gather as much information as possible and return here for an assault. The Blackhawk will be made available for your use in this mission."

"For the moment, I am going to remain here. I am concerned for the safety of the Duke and I also find myself in need of learning more of the political aspect of rulership. I will be ready should my sword be needed. However, I trust that all of you can handle yourselves quite well in the meantime."

"Good luck to you all."

“We’ll find out the truth of the matter and then act accordingly,” Sir Corley notes.

Sir Corley is mildly surprised to be put in charge of the missions along with Sir Acerion. The Baron wishes to remain to observe the political process at work.

“As you command, my friend. We will attend to these matters and prepare for our assault on the castle once night falls.”

Turning to Sir Acerion, Sir Corley will say, “Since we have time until night falls, I feel that we should explore the homes of the missing councilmen. We’ll start with those here in Old Town first. Once we have ascertained the situations there, then we can make our plans for the dealing with the guards. Will you be remaining here to help guard the Duke, or shall you be accompanying us?”

Sir Corley will discretely make the rounds informing those Guardians present about our plans. He will suggest that those already here with the Duke remain at their posts for the time being. Between the Guardians in the field and the New Seekers, there should be enough people present to deal with the challenges we face. But Sir Corley would like all the Guardians to be on hand once they begin the siege of the castle. He feels that the greatest challenge will be there.
