New Frontiers #106

The Guardians have arrived at the Sallavarian Estate just north of Elcadan. This not their first visit here, as the group stayed here on their way to Rennydale many weeks ago. While the main house is expansive, with this many guests doubling up in rooms will be required. There are plenty of servants to handle any tasks that come up and food is plentiful. Edwina, Jallarzi’s pseudodragon familiar, will be her usual pest.

The weakness that plagued Lyonessa passes quickly and she’s her normal self once more. Squire Moonshadow will check up on her after he arrives with the other riders.

“Are you well, milady?” He asks, concern in his voice. “I heard what transpired on the Blackhawk. It took great courage to stand before such a fearsome foe like you did.”

The bodies of Dalliance and Arafel are examined and found to be free from any enchantments or any kind of alterations. They are stored in the basement of the estate for now.

Baron Validar speaks to Duke Relon concerning the former captain of the Blackhawk.
Validar wrote:"I believe that there is nothing that we can learn from the slaver captain and that he should be punished for his crimes against the Duchy and against the others who he has enslaved. I do not recommend that he is rehabilittable due to the affects of the Devilles. We must be rid of him permanently. The risk otherwise is too great." Unless the Duke disagrees strongly, Validar will have the Captain slain for his crimes and the body burned to prevent his return and future use by the enemy.
“If we have no method to remove whatever foul enchantments were placed upon him, then yes, by all means have him removed. To do otherwise would just ensure a long and painful march to death. Proceed in this matter, as you see fit.”

The Captain is slain and his body, along with the remains of what was believed to be TiCat and Claudius, are burned to prevent retrieval.

Later that evening, Serena gives a crash course in using a Spell Engine to any mage who attends. Only those who can cast Mage spells, including Bards, can make use of a Spell Engine. The sole exception is Priests of Mystra. Since Mystrans are the followers of the Goddess of Magic, they can also make use of any magic item that otherwise could only be used by Mages. That is how Serena, a non-mage, can make use of the engine.

The process itself is quite simple. The mage touches the engine for a few minutes in order to bond with it. Once bonded, the Engineer can use and control the Spell Engine. The Engineer is made aware of the abilities of the engine, how they are currently being used and what the Engine can do. Once bonded, the Engineer can mentally make adjustments to the engine as they see fit. The Engineer can also cast spells on the engine, giving it more power to operate on. The task of operating the engine takes only minimal concentration, so the mage is free to go and do other things.

Right after landing, Ivy says her goodbyes to the group. She retrieves a horse from the stable and starts to ride into Elcadan along with Elspeth. Baron Validar has several guards accompany the priestesses on their ride.

Elcadan is reached without incident and the two ride along the High Road across town to the Old Town District. The gates to Old Town are closed by the time they reach them, but the guards were expecting them, so they are allowed entrance. The temple is reached and Elspeth and Ivy are shown to Mother Boelle’s sparse room. The mood in the temple is understandably somber.

It is clear to the priestess that Mother Boelle is on her deathbed. Her face, usually so full of life, looks pale and lifeless. Her eyes are closed and she seems to be at peace. Once aware of Ivy and Elspeth, Mother Boelle’s eyes slowly open. She gestures for Ivy to come closer.

“Ivy, my child,” she says weakly. “I tried to last as long as I could, but Mother Azrella calls to me now. I cannot stay any longer. The burden I have borne for these many years will now be yours to carry. Come closer, child.”

Ivy does as directed. Leaning down, she hugs Mother Boelle for the last time. When the two touch, an unseen force rises up out of Boelle and slams hard into Ivy! The unseen force stuns Ivy and it dazes her for a moment, forcing her to take several steps back.

When she regains her senses, Elspeth is beside Mother Boelle. With tears running down her face, Elspeth passes her hand over Mother Boelle’s eyes. Boelle has passed on to the next world.

Turning to Ivy, Elspeth asks, “Are you all right, Ivy? What happened?”

Morning comes to the Sallavarian Estate. The night passed quietly and without incident. After breakfast, several tasks are carried out.

Lady Sallavarian goes to the Blackhawk and restores Sir Corley and his mount to flesh and blood. The young Knight wasn’t aware that he was stone for nearly a day. From his perspective, he was just moving closer to the enemy and is now on the Blackhawk.

Crysania contacts the spirits of Dalliance and Arafel. Both wish to be restored to life, as they were taken far too soon.

Near mid-morning, the procession is getting ready to depart. A contingent of Priests arrives from the city to join the march. Many armored priests of Heironeous and Helm bolster the Pyrisian Cavalry that survived the trip.

Ivy and Elspeth arrive as well, with the news that Mother Boelle has passed on. Her body will be at rest at the temple for the next two days, so that those who wish to pay their respects may do so. At the end of the second day, she will be cremated as per the Azrellan faith.

As the most senior priestess at the temple, at least for now, Elspeth is now in charge. She can be referred to as Mother Elspeth.

The original carriage used to travel from Pyris was severally damaged during the last attack. The acid burned many holes in it, and the blood of the demoness covered the inside. Lady Sallavarian provides another carriage to be used. It will hold Argent, Lyonessa, and her sister Myveria for the ride into Elcadan.

Once the preparations are complete, the ride into Elcadan will begin.

GM Notes

Post by GM Mad »

GM Notes:

I’ll need to know about any special defenses in place for the last few miles of the ride to Elcadan. The trip will take about 45 minutes to reach the outskirts of the city. I’ll also need to know where everyone is in the procession.

Lady Sallavarian has a large collection of dresses if Lyonessa and Myveria need to borrow one. Myveria will definitely need to borrow one, as she isn’t carrying anything that fancy with her.

The captured magic items are identified. The captain wore Leather Armor +2 and Boots of Feather Falling. His sword is a Scimitar of the Golden Gulf. It functions as a +2 weapon and provides the user an effective 18 CHR when it comes to commanding ships.

The mage had a Wand of Conjuration, Anklets of Sure Footing, and a Flash of Vapor. The wearer of the Anklets is unaffected by the movement of a ship on the sea, even in the most fierce storm. They retain their balance and spell casting is not hindered. When the flask is opened, a thick fog issues forth that will surround the ship obscuring it from sight.

Those who bond with the Spell Engine will learn the following about it. This Engine is a Mark 3 version. This means two things. The first is that only spells of first or second or third level can be cast upon it to power up the engine. Secondly, it determines how much spell energy the Engine can hold and how much energy it can use per hour. A Mark 3 engine can hold up to 10,500 pts of energy and expend 105 pts per hour. A first level spell will restore 100 pts, a second level spell 400 pts and third 900 pts. Magic Items can also be fed to the engine.

This particular engine can do three different things. The first generates a globe around the ship that allows it to lift and protects those on the ship from the outside elements. The larger the globe needed to cover the ship, the more energy it takes. A base minimum of 60 pts is required to do this for the Blackhawk. The globe also protects the ships from the stress of moving at higher than normal speeds.

The second ability is to generate the magical wind that propels the ship forward. Flight costs 5 pts for each 1 pt of Move from the engine’s reserve per hour. The Move statistic tells you how many 24 mile hexes something can cover in a 24 hour period. With 45 pts to spend, the Blackhawk has a maximum Move of 9. So a Move of 9 means you will go 9 hexes in a day, or cover 216 miles. It also converts directly into Miles Per Hour.

So, for base flight the Blackhawk has 105 pts to spend. 60 of these pts are spent on Life Support, leaving 45 pts for Flight. That means the Blackhawk can have a top Move of 9.

The last ability is Faster Than Light travel, FTL for short. This ability can only be used outside the atmosphere. The base cost is 1 pt of FTL travel per 10 pts from the engine reserve. 1 FTL is traveling at the speed of light, thus in 1 years time the ship will have moved 1 light year. Each additional 10 pts spent on FTL doubles the value and halves the time it takes to reach your destination. With FTL 2, the ship would travel 1 light year in 6 months.

With a Spell Engine this small, FTL travel is nearly worthless to a ship like the Blackhawk. To provide Full Life Support to the ship, that function takes 80 pts on the Blackhawk. (The extra points are needed to cover those things not included in the minimum cost. Mainly gravity and a regenerating atmosphere.) That leaves 25 pts to FTL, or just 2.5 FTL. That means it would take 144 days to travel 1 light year. It would take over 600 days to reach the closest star, so traveling to other Solar Systems is out of the question. Traveling to other planets in the solar system is doable.

The fastest way to travel to any distant location on Arret is to rise up out of the atmosphere, go to FTL for a few seconds to reach your destination, and then lower back down to land. By this method, distant locations can be reached in a matter of hours as opposed to days by just flying there directly.

There is a more in-depth write up in Elfquest #6 about spell engines that you can refer to as well.

Now what?

Sir Acerion:

Validar will have 500gp given to each of the Guardians and their associates (should they not decline it) and 100gp given to each of the New Seekers when they meet up.

"I thank you for this," Acerion says. "and while I have no use for the coin at this time, I shall take it to Heironeous' temple as I am certain it can be put to better use than where the funds would have gone otherwise."

Warton will approach Sir Acerion. “I realize that your current duty takes precedence, but I would like you to visit the temple when you are able. The stories of your exploits are a great inspiration to our acolytes. To hear them from your own lips would just further inspire the men.”

"I shall seek to visit the temple as soon as I am able," Acerion replies. "It will be good to see everyone there as well as to pay respects. If my tales inspire or prepare any of our fellow acolytes for the challenging times before us, it would be my honor to pass on all that has transpired."

"I also have a donation to make while I am there," Acerion adds. "It is my sincere hope it will be of aid whether it be used in outfitting one of our brothers or to bolster the temple's stores or defenses."

Validar will speak with the Duke on the remaining time back to Jallarzi's estate. He will also have Sir Acerion take a break from his guarding of the Duke and allow him some rest, with the other paladin available now.

"So you're saying I need a break?" Acerion asks light-heartedly. "I do appreciate it, but I will not wander far nonetheless."

After saying her goodbyes to Sir Acerion, Ivy will retrieve a horse from the stable and ride into Elcadan with Elspeth.

"Be safe, my love," Acerion says with a soft kiss on Ivy's lips. "I shall count every second you are gone."

Later Crysania will stay at the Salavarian Estate to help guard the Duke. She will see if any of the other followers of Heironeous present wish to join her for evening devotions.

"I will certainly join you Crysania," Acerion responds when she inquires. "I require only to change into more appropriate attire and shall be along in short order." Acerion will go to change into his robes and join her since he finds himself with some time away from guarding the Duke.

Lady Sallavarian goes to the Blackhawk and restores Sir Corley and his mount to flesh and blood. The young Knight wasn’t aware that he was stone for nearly a day. From his perspective, he was just moving closer to the enemy and is now on the Blackhawk.

"Good to have you back with us," Acerion says, clasping Corley's wrist and patting him firmly on the shoulder. His next words are in a lighter tone, "I must say it was a fine statue you make, but next time let us have one commisioned for you instead."

Ivy and Elspeth arrive as well, with the news that Mother Boelle has passed on. Her body will be at rest at the temple for the next two days, so that those who wish to pay their respects may do so. At the end of the second day, she will be cremated as per the Azrellan faith.

Acerion will wait for Ivy, letting her come to him when she is ready. No doubt she will be in a somber mood and he will be supportive and attentive.

"If it would not be inappropriate," Acerion will say when he senses Ivy is okay, "I would like to pay respects to Mother Boelle. It is obvious she was so important in your life and it would be an honor to have such a chance to look up her visage."

I’ll need to know about any special defenses in place for the last few miles of the ride to Elcadan. The trip will take about 45 minutes to reach the outskirts of the city. I’ll also need to know where everyone is in the procession.

Acerion will be in position near the Duke unless something different is asked of him. He will have his squire close and will be prepared with shield and lance, although the paladin hopes this last leg of the journey can be a peaceful one.

While not a mage, Sherra sees if she can crash the party. She's interested in learning what she can about the Spell Engines. It will be useful information to have should she ever get a ship and Engine of her own as well as how to handle any enemies who might be similarly outfitted.

After the class, Sherra will spent some time walking the outer walls or courtyard of the estate. She enjoys the night and thinks about all the things that have been going on recently. Her thoughts eventually drift to Yusef and can't help but wonder if she will ever see him again.

Sherra will gladly take the offered gold and several of the magical items hold interest for her as well. She will wait patiently though, as Validar may or may not want to consider distributing anything at the moment with everything going on.

Sherra figures she will be at the rear of the procession to help guard. She will be back away from everyone a little ways, acting like a traveller who is merely entering Elcadan at the same time as all the rest of them. She won't be too far away though to be easily seperated or unable to help should trouble arise (that is unless Validar has different plans for her).

Validar wrote:"I imagine that all of us have a desire for such a grounding, except perhaps for those who follow the teachings of Celestian. And certainly if you continue to amass wealth a jewels, you will certainly need someplace to store them all. I would be pleased if you would consider a residence within Pyris, or at the least within the Streel Duchy proper. I am certain that the land grant will be easy to procure," he says with a smile.
“My first thought was having a home here in Elcadan itself. I’m a big city girl at heart; so living out in the country doesn’t really appeal to me. Although since I can cast Teleport, location isn’t as big an issue. I suspect it’ll be a matter of finding something that appeals to me.”

Argent attends Serena’s course on the Spell Engine and has a good grasp of just what it can do. The Invoker can’t wait to get her hands on her own engine!

Argent is surprised to see Sherra there as well, but makes no issue of it. As a sailor, the engine must be of great interest to her.

It is later the next morning before Argent appears. She’s dressed in a fine royal blue dress with all silver trim. Her jewelry collection is on full display including her tiara. Knowing that town isn’t all that far away, Argent will cast Fly on herself right before entering the carriage. Her Tiara of Absorption is close by and will be switched with her bejeweled tiara if trouble arrises.

“This should be very exciting,” Argent will say to Lyonessa and Myveria. “Riding into town with all this nobility is sure to make a splash!”
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Ivy will graciously accept the coins with the intent of donating it to her home temple when she arrives.
Acerion wrote:"Be safe, my love," Acerion says with a soft kiss on Ivy's lips. "I shall count every second you are gone."
Ivy manages to weakly smile. “It always seems that something is forcing us apart. I will return when able, but be assured that you will be in my thoughts constantly.”

Ivy’s heart sinks when she sees that the gates to Old Town are already closed. But much to her surprise, they open as we approach them. The guards were made aware of the situation and they allow her and Elspeth to pass without any trouble. The two quickly ride to the temple, go inside and rush to Mother Boelle’s quarters.
It is clear to the priestess that Mother Boelle is on her deathbed. Her face, usually so full of life, looks pale and lifeless. Her eyes are closed and she seems to be at peace. Once aware of Ivy and Elspeth, Mother Boelle's eyes slowly open. She gestures for Ivy to come closer.

Turning to Ivy, Elspeth asks, "Are you all right, Ivy? What happened?"
“I—“, Ivy stammers. “I don’t know. It felt like something struck me, but what I haven’t a clue.”

While concerned, Ivy doesn’t focus on the strange occurrence. There is much to do here in the temple tonight. At the present, Elspeth is the senior priestess, so she’ll become the head of the temple. Another may be assigned in the future, but that’s a worry for another day. It’s a long night and the many children here are filled with sorrow.

Later next morning, Ivy and Elspeth ride back to Jallarzi’s estate. They ride along with followers of Helm and Heironeous on their way to join the ride back into town with the duke. Ivy is dressed in clean Azrellan robes for the occasion. Once back, Ivy briefly reports what has transpired. While getting ready to ride back into town she’ll speak with Sir Acerion and is eager for the comfort of his arms.
Acerion wrote:"If it would not be inappropriate," Acerion will say when he senses Ivy is okay, "I would like to pay respects to Mother Boelle. It is obvious she was so important in your life and it would be an honor to have such a chance to look up her visage."
“Of course you may,” Ivy easily answers. “She was the closest thing I ever had to a mother, so her passing leaves a huge void in my life. It will be difficult for all who knew here to continue on, but we’ll find a way. There were so many sad children last night.”

Ivy will ride beside Sir Acerion on the way into town. However, it’s very clear that her thoughts are many miles away from what is going on around her.

Serena isn’t that surprised to see Sherra arrive for the lessons with the Spell Engine. It’s clear that she’s interested in ships and the methods of moving them. After finishing up her lessons, Serena will speak to Sherra in private.

“I understand your curiosity, Sherra,” Serena will say. “The act of controlling a Spell Engine does not hinge on the mage’s power or skill. Rather that they can simply cast mage spells. My point is that if you wish to know how to control a Spell Engine, you’ll need to learn only the most rudimentary mage skills. I am not a mage myself, so I cannot say how long such training would take. I just thought that I’d make that option known to you.”

“Understood,” Crysania answers. “I need to freshen up myself.”

Crysania will speak to Lady Sallavarian about a place where they can hold their devotions. Then she’ll see to acquiring the proper food and drink.

Cereld joins us for an evening of partaking in strengthening food and the singing of hymns.
Crysania contacts the spirits of Dalliance and Arafel. Both wish to be restored to life, as they were taken far too soon.
Next morning, Crysania casts Speak with Dead and contacts the spirits of the fallen women. Both wish to be restored.

“I shall bring you back as soon as possible,” Crysania vows.

After the spell ends, Crysania will turn to both Validar and Cereld. “I will honor my word to restore them as soon as I am able. You see the spell that will restore them is incredibly draining to the caster. In short I would be bedridden for the next day upon casting it. Thus, I am force to wait until I can take that time off. With the Duke arriving today, I cannot in good conscience put myself out of commission while danger lurks about us.”

When the time comes to ride into Elcadan, Crysania will be in her usual chain mail armor and wearing her priestess robes.

Corley:

In one moment Sir Corley is advancing on the enemy forces, the next he finds himself on his steed on the deck of a ship!

“What goes on here?” He wonders in confusion.

At first Sir Corley thinks this just an elaborate jest, but he soon accepts that he had been stone for nearly a day!

“Most peculiar. I had no sense of the passing of time. It was like a blinked and was somewhere else.”
Sir Corley wrote:"Good to have you back with us," Acerion says, clasping Corley's wrist and patting him firmly on the shoulder. His next words are in a lighter tone, "I must say it was a fine statue you make, but next time let us have one commissioned for you instead."
“Indeed, although I don’t think I’d even wish to pose for such a thing for a long time to come!”

Sir Corley will indulge himself in a fine morning meal as he is brought up to date on what has transpired in his absence.

“It seems that our mission nears its end. We must be wary for yet another attack upon the Duke.”

Sir Corley will ride along the procession as directed with his squires.

Validar wrote:"Indeed there is a story. There is always a story with the lives we lead. They are not tame and they are not boring, but I would not have it any other way."

"As for the ship, it is of ill repute and of ill maintenance. We will have to move the mechanism that allows it to fly to a more desirable vessel."
“I see,” the Lady Gabriella answers. “Still, it must be a wonderful way to travel. No sitting in uncomfortable seats and getting sores. You could even sleep a trip away!”
Validar wrote:"Indeed I do. However, now we must be even more careful. Our defiance to the Devilles may soon result in their attempts to slay us and our loved ones rather than seek to cause pain, misery and suffering. We managed to banish one of the hags, but I believe I may have initiated a particularly strong enmity in this one due to our most recent encounter." Validar will be certain NOT to mention the fact that they perceived him to be dead after that fight.
“I will be more careful in the future, beloved. This I promise you.”
Validar wrote:"I see," Validar responds. "Very well, but I do agree as to the headpiece as well. I hope it will not be considered in bad form to carry the Warblade at my side during these festivities."
“Given the situation, I am sure my brother would understand. I should be a unique experience.”

Next morning, Lady Gabriella will see the riders off. Once they are gone from sight, she’ll return to the mansion to wait.

"Okay," is all Lyonessa says. Thankfully she does not need to seek Crysania out for any further concerns because she starts feeling better.

"Yes I believe I am okay now," Lyonessa says. "It was a little scary for a while, as that demon had some sort of draining gaze, but I seem to be fully recovered."

Later that evening, Serena gives a crash course in using a Spell Engine to any mage who attends. Only those who can cast Mage spells, including Bards, can make use of a Spell Engine. Lyonessa will attend, listening as Serena explains how that Engine works. It doesn't seem too difficult and it might be good knowledge to have.

Lady Sallavarian has a large collection of dresses if Lyonessa and Myveria need to borrow one. Myveria will definitely need to borrow one, as she isn’t carrying anything that fancy with her.

Lyonessa feels a little awkward looking through dresses that don't belong to her, but in order to fit the part she will need to be dressed appropriately. She finds something that suits her well enough and marvels at the dress her sister picked out.

"Someday we shall live like this," Lyonessa says, daydreaming and smiling as the two of them try on the dresses, "but not until I've seen all there is to see out in the world."

“What goes on here?” He wonders in confusion.

At first Sir Corley thinks this just an elaborate jest, but he soon accepts that he had been stone for nearly a day!

"Oh, Sir Corley, it is good to see you well and back with us!" Lyonessa exclaims upon seeing him returned to normal again.

“This should be very exciting,” Argent will say to Lyonessa and Myveria. “Riding into town with all this nobility is sure to make a splash!”

"Oh, I agree!" Lyonessa says as she climbs into the carriage. She will keep Dusk with her for now unless things look peculiar and she needs to send him out to scout.

Preparations for our arrival...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar of Pyris -

Duke Relon:
“If we have no method to remove whatever foul enchantments were placed upon him, then yes, by all means have him removed. To do otherwise would just ensure a long and painful march to death. Proceed in this matter, as you see fit.”

The Captain is slain and his body, along with the remains of what was believed to be TiCat and Claudius, are burned to prevent retrieval.

"I trust Jallarzi's counsel regarding arcane matters. While not my prefereable choice, I appreciate your aquiescing."

Validar watches the burning of the bodies and wonders if these even were the bodies of the Seekers. They never know the fate of TigerCat after his glorious and honorable sacrifice. Perhaps the young warrior lives on out there somewhere. As for Claudius, Validar did not even know that he was dead. Certainly they could never be considered friends."

Validar takes some time to check in with the mages to see how the Spell Engine instructions went and to get a brief explanation for his own information.

Ivy says her own goodbyes for now as she goes into town to be with the dying leader of her sect. The guards who accompanied her and Elspeth to Elcadan report back that they arrived with no difficulties.

"Indeed almost any use would be better than were these slavers had intented."

"Your steadfastness is greatly appreciated, my friend. You are a valuable ally in these troubled times."

"I imagine that all of us have a desire for such a grounding, except perhaps for those who follow the teachings of Celestian.

"I see," Validar says. "I imagine that first and foremost, you must decide just what it is that you want and what fits not only your needs, but your desires as well. If I may be of assistance when that time comes, let me know."

"Indeed there is a story.

"The rapid movement available by such a vessel is remarkable and with the unencumbrace of being relegated to rivers, lakes or seas, it offers tremendous versatility. I would hope that we can establish several of these flying vessels for our use. And the comfort is even more so than a normal ship as there is not the effect of the waves. It is much smoother and much more relaxing. It also allows one to accomplish other tasks should the be necessary."

“I will be more careful in the future, beloved. This I promise you.”

"That is all I ask, Beloved."

"I see," Validar responds. "Very well, but I do agree as to the headpiece as well. I hope it will not be considered in bad form to carry the Warblade at my side during these festivities."

“Given the situation, I am sure my brother would understand. I should be a unique experience.”

"That is good to know. We do not know what may happen and unfortunately our sphere of enemies will only grow. I must admit that I am looking forward to seeing you regaled in Zakharian finery."

Validar turns a bit more serious however, a moment later. "There is one bit of information that I feel I must share with you, on a personal level. We have recovered the bodies of two of the fallen Seekers and they may be brought back to the living, should their spirits agree."

"One of them was a ranger named Arafel and the two of us were close at the time. While my feelings for her were never stronger than a personal affinity, I feel that I must share this with you as she may join my re-assembled Seekers. I would rather you know now and I will be certain to make her aware of the situation as it now stands."

Eventually the night comes to an end and Validar will escort lady Gabriella to her quarters. He gives her one last kiss goodnight and then retires himself for a well-deserved rest.

In the morning there is much to do. Validar rises early to inspect the troops and see that everything is prepared as expected. Sir Corley is un-stoned and Validar will welcome his friend back among them.

He also is informed at some point that both Dalliance and Arafel wish to be brought back to the living. Validar will ask what the entails, how long it takes, when the tasks can be completed and whether that will take place at Jallarzi's Estate or at one of the temples in Elcadan.

"I thank you for your attention to this matter. They were both dear friends of ours and the rest of the Seekers and they were indeed taken from us too soon." Validar cannot help but catch the gleam of joy in Cereld's eye. "You are correct that we may need you to protect the Duke. We need everyone, as there is no way of knowing what other vile atatcks the enemy will attempt."

With the larger group, Validar is more at ease about a final attack, but is not overconfident. He fully expects another attack against them. He will have Sir Acerion as well as the other paladin available around the Duke for protection. Sir Acerion will ride alongside as before and Kell will be just behind the Duke and not as obvious. Should they attempt to circumvent Acerion's protection somehow, the Duke will still be protected.

Ivy and Elspeth arrive just before they depart and Validar offers his condolensces to them on the loss of their sect's leader and congratulations on the new title for Elspeth.

Validar will ask if anyone has interest in the magic items they located.

Sherra and Regnak will be asked to scout ahead of the procession to see if anything is unexpected. He imagines that there wil eb a procession of people lined up to see the new Duke and he would like Sherra particularly to mingle within this crowd to see if there is anything foreboding. Regnak's duties will be more for the march in and the area just outside of the city gates.

We should have as many Protection from Evil spells cast as possible on people in the group, perhaps having them cast in succession as we leave as I am not sure of the duration. Those fighters with a Protection on them will be les susceptible to the enemy. Any other defenses that the mages or priests can cast would be helpful, but not sure just what people like Crysania and Jallarzi and Serena can do.

There will be advance riders, then part of the main group of Guardians, with the Duke. The priests and their troops will be clustered towards the center around the carriage and then the remainder of the Guardians to the rear.

Next morning, Lady Gabriella will see the riders off. Once they are gone from sight, she’ll return to the mansion to wait.

Validar will give his lady a long kiss before he mounts Havok. He waves once more before they are out of sight and then the seriousness of the last ride into Elcadan begins.

Chareos

“It was just a thought, my dear,” he says as Argent reminds him of the Spell engine meeting. “Merely a quiet evening where we can enjoy one's company.”

Afterward at the meeting Chareos listens to the explanation of the Spell Engines uses and maintenance. “How long do these spells hold their sway once cast upon it?” He asks curiously. “It seems much like an Ioun stone, where you cast the spell for later retention. It is extremely interesting, I wonder how they are made,” he asks curiously aloud.

Already outside and tending to his horse, Chareos looks up to see Argent looking very elegant in one of her dresses. Approaching her, Chareos offers his hand and says, “You look heavenly.” He adds easily as he looks her over, “You could make the coldest of hearts melt by gazing upon you.”

Chareos will escort Argent to the carriage, offering his hand in helping her in as well.

Soon after he will mount up and take his place to the rear of the carriage alongside Cereld.
To serve and protect those who cannot.

Regnak

Rek will attend the meeting explaining the Spell engine.

“Can this spell engine also use magic items that are not desirable?” he asks curiously wondering if spells fuel it why not those of an item.

As Regnak begins to get ready he is informed of his duties. “It will be done as you say,” he says while chewing on a piece of black root.

Regnak will be ready to mount up with all his gear fairly quickly, As he rides forward he will keep his eyes and ears alert for trouble.

Lyonessa wrote:"Yes I believe I am okay now," Lyonessa says. "It was a little scary for a while, as that demon had some sort of draining gaze, but I seem to be fully recovered."
"I am pleased to see that you escaped unscathed, milady. The day would not be as bright without your presence," Squire Moonshadow states. "Please, excuse me. There is much to prepare for, come the morning. Perhaps we'll be able to talk more tomorrow. Pleasant evening, miladies."
Lyonessa feels a little awkward looking through dresses that don't belong to her, but in order to fit the part she will need to be dressed appropriately. She finds something that suits her well enough and marvels at the dress her sister picked out.
Jallarzi's tailor and some servant girls are on hand to assist in the task finding suitable attire. The only real difference that stands out in the dresses is that the Lady Sallavarian is some 4 inches taller than the sisters. Once that is taken into account, the dresses will fit nicely.
Lyonessa wrote:"Someday we shall live like this," Lyonessa says, daydreaming and smiling as the two of them try on the dresses, "but not until I've seen all there is to see out in the world."
"Someday," Myveria says with a smile. "You're a noble now, so you can live like this if you desire. Just don't forget about your family now that you are rubbing shoulders with important people!"

Ride into Town:

Late the next morning, the procession for the ride into town is assembled. Sherra and Regnak ride ahead of the main group to scout ahead. Sherra moves even further ahead once you get closer to town. Some people are gathered along the side of the road, as if waiting for someone to arrive. One will question Sherra what she knows about this talk of a new Duke arriving today.

Further back, the procession moves along in an orderly fashion. A group of riders in armor is approaching from the south and west. They bear the standard of High Guard. After a few tense moments you realize that the leader of these riders is Sergeant Levine, the guard commander you met back in Wrasseldown. The sergeant will ride up to Baron Validar and Sir Corley.

“Well met, good sirs. My men and I humbly ask for the honor of joining you for the new Duke’s arrival in Elcadan. I’ve heard rumors that all is not well with the Duke’s Guard and thought that we might be able to assist you in this matter.”

If allowed, Sergeant Levine and his men will merge into the procession.

The rest of the trip from the Sallavarian Estate passes quickly and without incident. The outskirts of town come into sight and there are some people lining the street as you approach. The crowd grows larger the nearer you get, as more people come rushing forth to see what is going on.

The High Road bisects Elcadan separating it into northern and southern halves. There are seven distinct districts to the large city. The first three are on the mainland, while the others are on small islands out in the Streel. North of the High Road is Crosstown the place where most new arrivals in Elcadan are accustomed too. The south is the slums, divided into northern and southern slums. The farther south you go, the worse it gets, so those areas that border the High Road don't look too bad.

On the first island, the High Road divides Old Town from New Town. As the name suggests, Old Town is the oldest part of Elcadan. The most prominent feature is the combination Mage Guild/Temple of Mystra. It's a large tower that stands six stories tall. The peak is covered with multiple Continual Light spells so that it functions like a lighthouse. New Town is the next oldest part of the town.

The last districts lie on the Nobles Island. Two bridges from the first island are the only way to reach this island. One bridge continues the High Road on Noble Island and serves to bisect the two districts. The second bridge goes directly to the Duke's Fortress which is the home of the city guard. To the south of the High Road are the noble estates for the wealthy and powerful in Elcadan.

The people are plainly dressed for the most part. They are just regular citizens that have been victimized by the corrupt government for many years. A few have concerned looks on their faces, but most seem happy. All are unsure what is going to happen.

The procession rides into town with the eyes of the population upon you. Just as the group reaches the Streelspan Bridge, the new Duke calls the procession to a halt. He dismounts and moves forward, with Sir Acerion and Kell following close behind. There is a sign on the bridge indicating that as per the order of the Duke, all who pass over the bridge must pay a toll. Two guards stand there and they are visibly nervous.

A hush falls over the crowd as Duke Relon draws his sword and with a quick slashing motion slices the sign in half. He then sheaths his sword and takes several steps up the bridge. The dumbfounded guards do not attempt to bar his progress. The new Duke then turns to address the crowd.

“As I am sure many of you have heard, the former Duke and Duchess of Elcadan were slain and replaced by demons many years ago. Only recently was this subterfuge discovered and our new king has taken steps to restore order to Elcadan. To that end, I, Relon Vanarkus, have been named the new ruler of these lands.”

“But I will not be the new Duke of Elcadan. No, that name now bears a stigma that I do not wish to bear. It is time for all of us, be it those who live here in the city or those who live out in the countryside to unite under one banner. We are all Cynalonians and we all live on the Streel Plain. To that end, this domain shall be renamed the Duchy of the Streel!”

Light applause rises up from the people. Taking his sword out once more, Duke Relon points it towards the sign he just destroyed.

“That sign was a symbol of the past which has no place under my rule. There will be no tolls to cross the bridges here in Elcadan. Your leaders will not hide themselves away from the people that they rule. Those unfair laws and practices that you’ve slaved under for many years will be removed. Law and order will return to Elcadan!”

That statement brings more applause from those assembled here.

“I hereby declare that the current City Council is to be abolished! Their unfair laws and regulations will be repealed. A new council will be chosen, but make no mistake that their function will be to serve only as advisors to me. I will not let others rule in my place like those who came before me did. I will not be lax in my ruling of this domain, but I promise you that I will be fair and just.”

“The new City Council will be nine in number. I have several candidates in mind, but I wish to have a good cross-section of people who live here in Elcadan. To this end, four seats on the City Council will be filled by regular citizens of your choosing. Your voice will be heard when it comes to matters of running this city.”

“It is my understanding that open court has not be held here for longer than most can remember. Open Court will be held three times a week until we can bring the problems plaguing this city under control.”

“I am told that many of you go hungry during these lean winter months. I am also told that the granaries are bulging with surplus supplies in case of an emergency. It seems to me that if people are hungry, then that is an emergency. To that end, my next decree is that the first granary be opened for public dispersion. No one needs go hungry when there is plenty to be had.”

The crowd breaks into wild applause. Some people can be seen running off to gather anything that they can carry grain in. Even the local guards are applauding.

“This is just the beginning. You are all witnessing the rebirth of Elcadan to its rightful place as the jewel of the west!”

After the next round of applause, the Duke finishes, “If you good people will excuse me, there is much to do. I have to visit the old City Council and decide what their fate shall be.”

As the crowd goes wild, the Duke will return to his horse and the procession moves on once more with many of the people following.

The procession crosses the Streelspan and onto the first island. The gates to Old Town stand open and the procession rides in. A crowd has gathered here as well to see what is going on. The way is made to the City Council Hall, where the Duke dismounts once more.

As he walks up the stairs, men from inside come to greet him. Leading the way is a man finely dressed with long dark brown hair and matching eyes. Following him is an older man with whiting black hair dressed in drab colors.

“An honor and a pleasure to meet you, Your Grace,” the first man says with a bow. “I am Lord Cranmer, one of the few remaining of the City Council.”

“This is my fellow councilman, Adelard.” The man following Lord Cranmer bows as well.

“What do you mean one of the few remaining, Lord Cranmer?” the Duke asks.

“The others haven’t been seen in days now, Your Grace,” Lord Cranmer answers. “Not in the council chambers, not at their guilds or even at their homes. It’s as if they up and left. Most mysterious.”

“Good riddance, if you ask me,” Adelard adds gruffly. “Four of them were as thick as thieves, always getting their way with rulings and decrees. But that Mortimer is missing too is unusual. He hated the others as much as we do.”

“I see,” the Duke states. “Come then. We have much to discuss.”

The group will then enter into the council auditorium where public meetings are held to discuss city matters. Duke Relon will pause to exchange whispers with Baron Validar.

“There is much to do,” the Duke states. “We need to resolve the crisis with the Duke’s Guard and need to know what happened to the missing councilmen. This is going to be a long day.”

Already a line is forming outside the Council Chambers for the chance to speak to the new Duke.

I’m going to stop here and let you guys figure out what you’re going to do next.

Those fighters with a Protection on them will be les susceptible to the enemy. Any other defenses that the mages or priests can cast would be helpful, but not sure just what people like Crysania and Jallarzi and Serena can do.
The mage version of Protection of Evil has a very short duration, only 2 rounds/level. The Priest version is better, with the duration being 1 turn/level.

Also, NF #16 has a good description of what you see first riding into town.

Now what?

Serena:
Sherra wrote:"That opens up possibilities then," Sherra says with a smile. "I can already cast mage spells off of a scroll. I wonder how much more I might need to learn."
“I am really not sure,” Serena answers apologetically. “My own training took a different path than the one that you seek. I do know that students at the University of Sundsvall spent many years learning magecraft.”
Validar will ask if anyone has interest in the magic items they located.
Serena has no real interest in the magic items. Her role in the victory was minor at best, so the items should go to those more deserving.
Chareos wrote:Afterward at the meeting Chareos listens to the explanation of the Spell Engines uses and maintenance. "How long do these spells hold there sway once cast upon it?" He asks curiously. "It seems much like an Ioun stone, where you cast the spell for later retention. It is extremely interesting, I wonder how they are made." he asks curiously aloud.
“No, a Spell Engine is not like an Ioun Stone,” Serena explains. “Once the spell is cast unto it, it is lost and cannot be retrieved. Its energy resides inside the furnace waiting to be used. The energy does not fade over time, although the brighter the flame inside the furnace, the more energy inside it. This one is about half full right now. A Spell Engine is like any other magic item. Its form is created and then enchantments laid upon it. In my homeland, there are Master Enchanters whose magical creations are considered works of art."
ReK wrote:Rek will attend the meeting explaining the Spell engine.

"Can this spell engine also use magic items that are not desirable?" he asks curiously wondering if spells fuel it why not those of an item.
“You are correct, Brother Rek,” Serena answers with a smile. “The Engine will consume those magic items placed into it as an alternative source of fuel. The only limit is those items that you can actually fit inside the furnace. Much like the magic in a spell, the enchantment is drained from the item, destroying it in the process.”

Serena watches the arrival into Elcadan without much emotion. The city pales to those in her native Alphatia, but that does not mean its people are any lesser. Serena will just follow along for now, keeping her eyes open for any potential trouble.

Validar wrote:"I see," Validar says. "I imagine that first and foremost, you must decide just what it is that you want and what fits not only your needs, but your desires as well. If I may be of assistance when that time comes, let me know."
“I will do that,” Argent answers, a bit surprised that the Baron is being so helpful in a matter such as this. However, Argent doesn’t dwell on the subject any further and moves on to her next task.

When talk of magic items comes up, Argent will express a mild interest in the Anklets.
Chareos wrote:Already outside and tending to his horse, Chareos looks up to see Argent looking very elegant in one of her dresses. Argent will thank Chareos for his assistance and give him a kiss on the cheek.
Lyonessa wrote:"Oh, I agree!" Lyonessa says as she climbs into the carriage. She will keep Dusk with her for now unless things look peculiar and she needs to send him out to scout.
Argent will chat with Lyonessa and her sister as they ride along. Town is soon reached and we ride in. Argent has been to Elcadan many times before, mostly back when she was training with Jallarzi. But now to be riding back into town finely dressed, in a noble carriage and even having a noble title is far beyond anything she ever dreamed.

Elcadan may not look like much on the surface, but it does have much to offer. There are some very fine craftsmen here. You just have to know where to look for them.

The new Duke makes his speech and we’re off riding again. Next we go into Old Town and it seems that the Duke is going to be here for a while.

“Perhaps this isn’t going to be as exciting as I first thought,” Argent mutters while stifling a yawn.

Sir Corley:
Lyonessa wrote:"Oh, Sir Corley, it is good to see you well and back with us!" Lyonessa exclaims upon seeing him returned to normal again.
“I never realized I was away, milady, but I appreciate your concern nonetheless. It is good to know that I was missed.”

As he eats, Sir Corley is brought up to date on what he missed.

“Capturing this flying ship has given us an opportunity to backtrack on some of the Deville activities. It seems to me that we’ll need to use the Blackhawk itself to investigate some of the places these slavers visited. Any other ship would cause suspicion to those at these places. We might come across other such vessels in the service of the Devilles. Did anyone go through the logs and maps yet?”

Assisted by his Squires, Sir Corley is ready for the ride into Elcadan. At his position near the front rank he can see what lies ahead of them. While prepared for trouble, none comes our way. The city is reached and the people seem pleased with their arrival. Once at the City Council building, Sir Corley will stay mounted and on guard while Validar converses with his father.

Sherra:
Validar will ask if anyone has interest in the magic items they located.
Sherra will show interest in the scimitar.
Sherra will move ahead and mingle in the crowd. She will try to get the sense of anything wrong or see if she spots an assassin or spy. She sees nothing so obvious, and is actually questioned about the new Duke. "Like you, I'm not sure just what to expect," she says with some truth. Sherra isn't sure exactly what the Duke will be doing. "I am holding out that this change will be good though."

As the Duke makes his way through Elcadan, it's easy for Sherra to move along, keeping her eyes out. The crowd grows and she changes her positioning as often as she can. Still, she doesn't see anything too out of the ordinary. The Duke's speech raises cheers from the crowd and it brings a smile to Sherra's own lips. She can understand what most of these people must now be feeling with a new hope for a better future in front of them. She will remain in the crowd for a while, looking to see if there are any sour faces and making a note of any who seem suspicious.

Sir Acerion:

Acerion has no interest in any of the magical items recovered, especially since his role was non-existant against the flying ship.

As to be expected, there is a large crowd gathering for the arrival of the Duke. Acerion gives some last minute instructions to his sqiure and smiles at Ivy before he has to focus completely on his task at hand.

The procession rides into town with the eyes of the population upon you. Just as the group reaches the Streelspan Bridge, the new Duke calls the procession to a halt. There is a sign on the bridge indicating that as per the order of the Duke, all who pass over the bridge must pay a toll. Two guards stand there and they are visibly nervous.

Acerion keeps his weapons stowed, but has his shield at the ready. As he keeps a watchful eye, he listens to the Duke's speech. The reception is good and shows Acerion just how much these people have indeed suffered. It will be a long road before all of evil's work will be undone here, but it begins today.

“Be on Guard,” Chareos says to Cereld, “Our last meeting was not one to speak of.” As several tense moments unnerve him slightly.

Having seen the city before and not very pleased with his previous visit, Chareos merely watches the crowd. As the new Duke speaks of change, he watches in admiration as the people approve of his plans, after all the way to people’s heart is through their bellies.

“Ah council members, Think they would suckle from a nursing dragon if it would suite their cause.” He says to Cereld with a chuckle.

Chareos will drop off his mount and head for the carriage

Chareos will wait till its okay to open the door then do so, helping the ladies down from the carriage., opening the door, “Do hope your ride was a pleasant one, My Ladies’.”

Regnak

Having to little of a hand in the battle Regnak decides to pass on the items.

Riding into the town, Regnak looks about for signs of trouble as he draws closer to the town he looks back to the procession to see how they are fairing. He looks into the eyes of many of those gathered, seeing many emotions running rampant within there faces.

He can’t help but feel for them, an in a sense long for it for his homeland of Akorros. “Remember this day, my friends.” He says thoughtfully, “They do not come easy nor often.”

Seeing the people run for the granaries raises his concern, Approaching Sir Corley and the Sergeant of the High Guard, “Will the people not trample one another?” he says casting his gaze at the running populace, “Should men be sent to the granaries to help maintain order?” he asks curiously.

Regnak will wait on horseback walking his mount back and forth where able, looking for signs of trouble.

Baron Validar of Pyris -
"I see," Validar says. "I imagine that first and foremost, you must decide just what it is that you want and what fits not only your needs, but your desires as well. If I may be of assistance when that time comes, let me know."

“I will do that,” Argent answers, a bit surprised that the Baron is being so helpful in a matter such as this. However, Argent doesn’t dwell on the subject any further and moves on to her next task.
Validar catches the slight surprise in Argent's face. He then adds, "Afterall, that is what friends are for."

"Sherra has looked at the maps and logs, but has informed me that it will take some time to go through them. Something we have not had in great abundance of late," Validar responds. "Once we have completed the Duke's immediate needs then there is that possibility. We also have the Seekers to conduct missions we need done. However, more of these vessels would indeed be helpful."

"As for need of the Blackhawk specifically, if I understand it correctly, it is her flags that identify here for the most part. I will discuss this idea with Sherra at greater length when the time comes to prepare for such a mission. For now, we have not even identified an alternate vessel for the Spell Engine."

Magic items dispersement:
Anklets - Argent
Scimitar - Sherra
Chareos - Boots
Te rest of the items will given to the Seekers for Araduin and Dar Thaltus to distribute as they see fit.

More to come...

Baron Validar -

(We will not have used any of the Protection spells since they have such a short duration and effectively wasted on the journey.)

The procession into Elcadan does not begin until late morning. It gives the baron plenty of time to make sure everything is as it should be. He inspects the troops before they leave as well as the carriage and prepares his own mount for the 'parade'.

Validar checks with Sherra and Regnak one last time before they leave and everything is in place.

Finally the trumpets are sounded and the troops begin their march. Validar is off to the side for the initial part of the procession and salutes the cavalry commander as he passes. Then with a final wave to the Lady Gabriella, Validar moves in step in front the Duke and alongside Sir Corley.

Lady Rachel catches Validar's attention and he turns to see what she is pointing at: armored troops arriving from the south and west and bearing the flag of the Elcadan High Guard. Validar calls a halt to the procession, but soon it is revealed that the men are under Sergeant Levine, whom they met in Wrasseldown.
“Well met, good sirs. My men and I humbly ask for the honor of joining you for the new Duke’s arrival in Elcadan. I’ve heard rumors that all is not well with the Duke’s Guard and thought that we might be able to assist you in this matter.”
"Hail to you, Sgt. Levine," Validar responds. "You are welcome to join our ranks. You and your men may ride behind the Pyrisian cavalry just ahead of us."

Soon, we reach Elcadan and Validar will wave occasionally to the people lining the roads. There is a sense of wonder in the crowd and while generally in a good mood, they are not very raucous. At the Streelspan Bridge, Validar remembers the last time he was here. He does not remember any time in Elcadan very fondly. Hopefully that will change in the coming future.

Duke Relon addresses the people and Validar moves to a position to protect the Duke should something happen, still astride Havok. His lance remains pointed at the sky, its pinion blowing in the soft breeze.

The Duke manages to get the crowd fired up with his speech and clearly the soldiers are also behind him. So far things have gone smoothly, Validar notes to himself. He does not begin to let his guard down however.

Validar will have Sergeant Levine and his men go to the granaries to supervise the dispursal of the food stores. Clearly order will need to be maintained and Validar hears Regnak mention the same to Sir Corley. "Sergeant, take control of as many of the soldiers in the area as possible to control order. Keep the lines orderly and allow anyone who is clearly old or infirm to receive their portions first."

Validar dismounts as well, when the Duke arrives at the Council Hall and turns his mount and lance over to squire Ebonov. Validar greets the existing councilmen, "Greetings, I am Validar Van Arkus, Baron of Pyris. I will be maintaining the military presence here for the Duke until it can be transitioned to a more permanent local commander."

"I fear you are correct, father. We are in Elcadan and she is yours, but there is much to accomplish before she is under your control," Validar whispers in return.

Validar will take in what Sherra and Regnak have to say when they join the group. He will send them back out into the town for a short while to see what they can overhear in taverns and businesses as it is almost certain that word is getting around now. He would like to know the general feeling of the people, besides what he has already seen. He also wants them to inquire as to anything about this Mortimer who was on the Council and is now missing.

Validar will have Cereld and Chareos go to the inn the Seekers are staying at and have them return to the Hall. Validar wants to find out what they have learned before the make any further plans. While he is waiting for them to arrive, he will meet with several of the local soldiers and their leaders and introduce himself as well as get a feeling for the overall troop quality and readiness. As well as their current morale, with the recent changes in leadership. He will ask about the defenses of the Castle and about the Duke's Guard and their notable leaders. This will likely only be resolved through battle, but the baron hopes that can be avoided.

Those not directly involved in the immediate protection of the Duke can mingle about the area or listen in on the Council meeting as they see fit, but Validar asks that anyone without a specific task not wander too far and for no one to go singly for now, as they may be engaging in a battle this afternoon.

Lyonessa:

"What about Phelan?" Lyonessa asks her sister as they get into the carriage. "Will he also be heading to Elcadan or does he have other plans?"

"I bet it's very exciting for these people though," Lyonessa says smiling, taking a peek out the window at all the townsfolk gathering. "From what it sounds like, it's the first good news in a while."

Noting that Argent might be bored, she'll ask, "So is there anything like a theatre here in Elcadan? Or an open air ampitheatre? I bet it would do the people some good to have an evening out." Lyonessa begins to think of the ballads or songs she could play, but remembers they might still be in danger. She puts those thoughts away for later.

Those not directly involved in the immediate protection of the Duke can mingle about the area or listen in on the Council meeting as they see fit, but Validar asks that anyone without a specific task not wander too far and for no one to go singly for now, as they may be engaging in a battle this afternoon.

Lyonessa has no real plans but understands the need for everyone to stay close. She will continue to talk to her sister or find a spot to work on a sonnet or two.

Gabriella:
Validar wrote:"The rapid movement available by such a vessel is remarkable and with the unencumbrace of being relegated to rivers, lakes or seas, it offers tremendous versatility. I would hope that we can establish several of these flying vessels for our use. And the comfort is even more so than a normal ship as there is not the effect of the waves. It is much smoother and much more relaxing. It also allows one to accomplish other tasks should the be necessary."
“Such a thing would be a tremendous boon to commerce as well. The ability to quickly move goods from one location to another and even open up new trade routes with distant lands would be extremely beneficial. If these are as common as we’ve been led to believe in Alphatia, then it is no wonder that they are a powerful empire.”
Validar wrote:"That is good to know. We do not know what may happen and unfortunately our sphere of enemies will only grow. I must admit that I am looking forward to seeing you regaled in Zakharian finery."
Gabriella laughs at those comments. “I am sure that most ladies of the court would find my attire to be most scandalous!”
Validar wrote:Validar turns a bit more serious however, a moment later. "There is one bit of information that I feel I must share with you, on a personal level. We have recovered the bodies of two of the fallen Seekers and they may be brought back to the living, should their spirits agree."
“Then that is good news, is it not?” Gabriella inquires.
Validar wrote:"One of them was a ranger named Arafel and the two of us were close at the time. While my feelings for her were never stronger than a personal affinity, I feel that I must share this with you as she may join my re-assembled Seekers. I would rather you know now and I will be certain to make her aware of the situation as it now stands."
An impish grin comes to Gabriella’s face, one that she tries to hide but doesn’t completely succeed in.

“My dear, Validar, I never assumed that I was your first, but if you know what’s good for you, then I will be the last.”

“Yes, of course,” Argent responds, even more surprised than she was before. But it is nice to be wanted for her obvious magical skills and good to be known in important crowds.
Chareos wrote:“Perhaps.” He says evenly, “It may depend on how our new Duke is greeted.”
“That is true. The evening may be quiet or we may not sleep for a long time.”
Lyonessa wrote:"I bet it's very exciting for these people though," Lyonessa says smiling, taking a peek out the window at all the townsfolk gathering. "From what it sounds like, it's the first good news in a while."
“I’m sure that it is very good news for these people,” Argent will agree. “I’ve made enough trips into town while I was Jallarzi’s apprentice to know what went on here. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy for them, but a little excitement wouldn’t hurt either.”
Lyonessa wrote:Noting that Argent might be bored, she'll ask, "So is there anything like a theatre here in Elcadan? Or an open-air amphitheatre? She puts those thoughts away for later.
“Yes, there is,” Argent will answer. “There is the Theatre of the Muse in New Town. They are known to hold plays and recitals. I’ve never been to one myself, but I am told that the wealthy frequent it. I can recall many an aspiring actor or actress visiting Jallarzi seeking sponsorship. I guess it’s some sort of status symbol among the well-to-do to sponsor a performer.”
Chareos wrote:Chareos will wait till its okay to open the door then do so, helping the ladies down from the carriage, opening the door, “Do hope your ride was a pleasant one, My Ladies’.”
“It beats being on horseback,” Argent will answer wryly.

Once out of the carriage, Argent will stretch for a moment and will take a position out of the way but where she can still see the Duke and his advisors.

“I understand,” Sir Corley simply answers. “With my being out of touch, I was unsure what had been done on this front.”

“While it is true that its flags help identify a vessel, my point is that if this ship has visited these places many times then those there know what the ship looks like. They would be less suspicious of the Blackhawk herself than another vessel bearing its standard. It might be advantageous for us to enter these ports maintaining the guise of being slavers, at least for a time.”

“I do know a little about sailing, my friend. Did you forget my old brother Beltran is the Captain of the HMS Endeavour?”
Regnak wrote:Seeing the people run for the granaries raises his concern, Approaching Sir Corley and the Sergeant of the High Guard, “Will the people not trample one another?” he says casting his gaze at the running populace, “Should men be sent to the granaries to help maintain order?” he asks curiously.

Validar answers the question first to Sir Corley’s satisfaction. “I think I’ll take a ride over to the granaries to check up on things. It’s not far, so I shouldn’t be long.”
