Industrious Excursions (Episode 11)

Post by GM Fang »

Split up in various parts of Mos Espa, the team had some interesting encounters while trying to gather equipment and information. FL-AR3 received a mission from Shara on behalf of Tara Nightshade, the team's sometimes information broker. Eager to get the information on the data crystal to the rest of his companions, his departure was interrupted by an enigmatic figure. Eventually identifying herself as Syalla, a Gank warrior.

Fl-AR3 searched his data banks after the encounter and found some interesting information. Syalla had indicated that her best skill was "killings". And surprisingly, that fit the data. Ganks, also known as Gank killers, were a bloodthirsty, bipedal sentient species. Members of the species usually wore high-tech battle armor from head to foot, so to most non-Ganks their physical appearance remained unknown. Under the armor Ganks were hairy and powerful, with yellow, squarish faces and beady eyes. They sported cybernetic implants that allowed them to communicate with one another silently. Ganks were rarely seen alone, as they moved around in packs and worked together to accomplish their aims. They relished opportunities for violent mayhem and massacring others, a joy that only embellished their reputation as bloodthirsty killers.

That didn't seem to completely fit the mysterious Syalla. She was alone and seemed somewhat down-trodden. Not the bloodthirsty type. There was a story there.

Meanwhile, Killian found some unexpected information while in another cantina. It seemed that there was a bounty on someone who sounded quite a lot like Spanner. The other two mentioned bounties were very different individuals than anyone Killian had met previously. But this new revelation created a bit of a problem.

Proiah and Spanner were on the lookout for parts to repair the hyperdrive of the Vagrant, the ship they claimed as spoils from the capture of the smuggler Bandin Dobah. Finding a rather infamous repair and junk shop, Ronock's Junk and Repairs, the team began determining what other parts might be needed from the data scan that FL-AR3 and Spanner had done on the ship. Batoo, the Besalisk proprietor had started to give them information, based on his view of the data, about what parts they were likely to need and what subsequent issues might arise as new parts replaced old, failed ones.

Then a Kubaz came by the shop and started talking to the Besalisk, all the while his goggled eyes not leaving the pair. Suddenly, the Besalisk seemed nervous and upset and closed his shop down a little early, ushering the patrons out into the dusk wind.

Proiah tried to follow the Kubaz and eventually lost him. Unsure just what had happened, they resolved to come back the next day.

Doing their best to assuage the Besalisk's concerns, Proiah and Spanner managed to convince him to sell them the parts they needed. Batoo had seemed to imply that they were reputed to be seen in dangerous company and he didn't want any trouble.

Batoo indicated that as Spanner had noted that they definitely would need several TL-50 power converters. Those were usually the first to wear out of drift out of synchronization and even if they hadn't yet, they might not handle the higher power levels that the other new parts would generate. A new hypermatter condenser was a definite need given the ship readings.

Batoo suggested that with these parts all needing replaced that the Ion Exciter should be an expected replacement. It was an expensive part and even if they didn't need it this moment, it would be difficult to find. He said that he could get his hands on a good used one when the Jawa land trawler arrived that afternoon. The last thing they would need if the Ion exciter was replaced was the hyperdrive compression coils. It would be difficult to match the old ones to the new parts.

A few other suggestions included the horizontal booster, which provided energy to the ionization chamber to facilitate ignition and an alluvial damper, the part that regulated the thrust output from a hyperdrive generator, blocking the emission of ion particles by moving a servo-controlled plate. These were likely in useable condition, but if there were further problems in the hyperdrive, these would be the best places to look for repairs or complete replacement.

With the parts secured, the team found they would not be able to just stick the ion exciter on the shuttle that V'Grax offered. It was too, too heavy and too dangerous to travel on a normal transport. The team would have to find a more commercial mode of transport to get their parts back to Mos Shuuta and their ship.

Eventually, they arrived and FL-AR3 and Spanner began work on the hyperdrive, while Proiah monitored the progress from the cockpit systems output. There were a few tricky parts to the the modification and the replacement of the main damaged components, but eventually everything was cobbled into place amidst much welding pops and sparks. Proiah ran a pre-flight systems check and everything seemed to come online properly. They would only know for sure however once out of the planetary gravitational pull whether the work they put in would result in the main hyperdrive actually working again.
